Welcome to Trek Sierra Nevada
Trek Sierra Nevada is a comprehensive guide to hiking in the Sierra Nevada mountains in the south of Spain. It also covers walking in the surrounding area, where the scenery is often as dramatic as in the Sierra Nevada itself. You can use the site to find detailed, accurate route descriptions for some of the best self-guided walks in southern Spain, as well as lots of useful information about where to stay, when to come and how to get around. You can also book guided walks and introductory mountaineering courses through the website.
Self-guided hikes
Search for suitable hikes by length, season or location or using our interactive map. Whether you just want to go for a two-hour stroll, or are after some really challenging hiking, you’ll find it here.
Guided hikes
We work with José Luis, a fully qualified mountain guide who lives in Granada and grew up in the local area. He offers guided walks and introductory mountaineering courses .
Granada audio tours
Soak up Granada’s rich 1,000-year history and culture with an audio tour . Follow one of our favourite routes through Granada’s historical centre, the Albaicín, Sacromonte or Realejo. Ben will guide you around the city, telling you about the sights you pass on the way.
More activities
If you would like to combine your hiking holiday with some history and culture, rest and relaxation, nightlife or adventure sports, the area around the Sierra Nevada has it all. You can visit the magical Alhambra palace and city of Granada , go canyoning , try a via ferrata , sample the local food and drink , explore the quaint white villages of the Alpujarras or just head for the beach.
Guided or self-guided?
All of our self-guided walks are designed to be done without a guide, which allows you to go at your own pace and enjoy the peace of the spectacular mountain scenery.
On the other hand, if you go with a guide you’ll learn much more about the local architecture, geology, fauna and flora, as well as the people who live here, than you would on your own. And if you want to climb the highest peaks like Mulhacén or Veleta in winter, the only safe way to do it is with a guide.

Hiking Spain’s Sierra Nevada with a Guide
by Melanie McManus | Sep 24, 2019 | Blog , Hiking , Spain | 1 comment
On a recent trip to southern Spain, I was determined to fit in a hike. A quick Google search showed the impressive Sierra Nevada mountains were right near my destination of Granada. Perfect. My research also led me to a company named Spanish Highs, which offers guided expeditions here. One is the Tres Picos Challenge , where you climb the three highest peaks in the Sierra Nevada in three days.
Disclosure: This post contains affiliate links (among regular links) to products I own and like, or which I think you might like. This means that, at no extra cost to you, I will earn a commission if you click through and make a purchase.
One of those peaks is Mt. Mulhacén, the tallest mountain in the Iberian peninsula (Spain and Portugal). Spain’s highest peak is Mt. Teide in the Canary Islands, a Spanish archipelago. I was fortunate to have hiked up Mt. Teide in 2012. The opportunity to now hike up the highest mountain in the Iberian Peninsula was irresistible. I signed on with my husband, Ed.
Hiking the Sierra Nevada
Generally, I like to do things on my own. Why should I pay for a guided hike when I know I can figure out the details myself? I also speak a little Spanish, so I wasn’t concerned about a language barrier. However, I was short on planning time , so I opted for the guided hike. This turned out to be a great choice.
Kiersten, co-owner of Spanish Highs, picked us up in Lanjarón, a town outside of Granada, along with Leo, our guide. Normally, the Sierra Nevada have sunny, beautiful weather in September, when Ed and I headed out. But weather is unpredictable these days. The forecast for our three-day adventure called for storms every day.
First lesson learned: Guided hikes are especially worthwhile if the weather turns sour, because your guide will know exactly how the weather behaves in this spot. You, most likely, will not. Plus, in this case, the Spanish Highs staff was constantly in contact with Leo to give him up-to-date weather intel.
Mission accomplished! We got to the top just as the good weather ended. We took the requisite photos, then scurried after Leo. It rained and hailed a little during the next few hours, but we made it to Refugio Poqueira (hostel) just fine. Along the way, Leo pointed out various native plants and animals, plus showed us a lookout post built during the Spanish Civil War (1936-1939).
Mt. Veleta, by the way, is the third-highest peak in mainland Spain.
The second day of the Tres Picos Challenge is ascending to the top of Mt. Mulhacén, the tallest mountain in the Iberian peninsula at 11,424 feet, or 3,482 meters. Again, the forecast called for storms much of the day, with a small window of sunshine in the morning.
Leo, Ed and I hit the trail by 7:30 a.m., along with others staying at the Refugio Poquiera. The hike was quite steep for the last 200 meters, but we did it! Unfortunately, a thick bank of clouds enveloped Mulhacén’s peak when we arrived. No views of Africa or the Mediterranean Sea for us. Oh well, that didn’t diminish our accomplishment one bit.
Once again, Leo gave us wonderful information about the flora and fauna of the area. On the hike back to the refugio, he led us to one of the bunkers used in the Spanish Civil War, now available for hikers to use. We went inside to check it out – too cool!
Day 3: Alcazaba
This was our most difficult challenge. Storms were predicted to roll in during the early afternoon, but the hike up to the top of Alcazaba – and then back down and over to our extraction point – was a long one. Could we do it safely?
Leo was getting frequent updates from the staff at Spanish Highs regarding the latest weather forecasts. By now, he knew our hiking pace and ability. He determined that, with another early start, we could bag Alcazaba’s peak and get back down to a safe zone before the weather turned.
We hit the trail early and enjoyed beautiful weather and exceptional scenery, including lots of ibexes, or Spanish mountain goats. The trail went steeply up and down several times before the final climb to Alcazaba. Leo estimated it hit a 30-35 percent incline in parts – yikes! So it was hard work, but well worth the effort.
Wild Hiking
Of the three peaks, Alcazaba is the least-visited, so it’s the wildest and most exciting, at least to us. Luckily, we finally had sunshine at the top of this peak. So we enjoyed incredible views before scurrying down, just as the sun became obscured by thick, dark clouds.
There were many miles of hiking to get done before reaching a parking area, where Kiersten would be waiting to take us back to Lanjarón. It poured for about an hour, which was unpleasant. But once the rain stopped, the wind and low humidity quickly dried our clothes.
Just as we reached Kiersten and hopped in the car, the heavens opened once again.
Thoughts on Guided Hikes
What’s the takeaway from this? First of all, head to Spain’s Sierra Nevada! You won’t regret it. But also consider taking a guided hike, if you haven’t already.
If we had opted to do this hike on our own, we could have done it, sure. But we probably would have gotten caught in much worse weather, since we wouldn’t have known what was coming and when. We would never have learned about the Spanish ibex or things like the Estrellas de las Nievas, or the Stars of the Snow, a pretty plant only found in the Sierra Nevada. We wouldn’t have recognized the Spanish Civil War lookout posts and bunkers.
Perhaps more important, we would have missed out on wonderful cultural exchanges. For when you hike with someone from another country and culture for several days, you can have many valuable and enjoyable conversations.
I’m sold on guided hikes, especially in foreign countries. But always make sure to do your research and pick a reputable company, such as Spanish Highs.
For more information, check out this guidebook on hiking the Sierra Nevada. This book gives a great history of the Spanish Civil War.

The Most Epic Hiking Trails in Spain's Sierra Nevada
Southern Spain’s Sierra Nevada natural park is a trekker’s paradise, offering trails of varying lengths and difficulty amid humbling mountain scenery. Read on for our pick of the park’s most epic hiking tracks, including a monster route that takes in mainland Spain’s two highest peaks.
Did you know – Culture Trip now does bookable, small-group trips? Pick from authentic, immersive Epic Trips , compact and action-packed Mini Trips and sparkling, expansive Sailing Trips .
Hoya de la Mora-Veleta
The 3,396-metre Mount Veleta is mainland Spain’s third-highest mountain (and the Sierra Nevada’s second), its distinctive sloping peak visible from many spots in Granada city centre. An enjoyable and relatively undemanding route to its summit starts from Hoya de la Mora , a parking and refreshment area located at 2,500 metres (a 45-minute drive from Granada). From Hoya, it’s a couple of hours’ walk to the top of Veleta, from where you can take in some spectacular views as you refuel for the return trek.
Hoya de la Mora can also be used as a starting point from which to trek to the summit of Mount Mulhacén, mainland Spain’s highest peak at 3,478 metres. Conquering this beast is doable without any actual climbing, but the approach on the western flank can be demanding, especially in the snow. The views that surround you and the huge feeling of achievement, when you reach the summit (crowned by a ruined little mountain hut), make it all worthwhile, though. Allow up to seven hours for the return hike.

Hoya de la Mora-Veleta-Mulhacén
Feeling ambitious? Arguably the most epic hike in the Sierra Nevada starts from Hoya de la Mora and takes in mainland Spain’s two highest mountains, Veleta and Mulhacén, in one go. You tackle Veleta first, taking a short break on its summit, before a brief descent to the path that takes you to Mulhacén. The scenery through which you trek is staggering, with the park’s rocky, barren terrain stretching away to infinity in every direction. Allow 10 hours for this monster hike.
Capileira-Mulhacén
Another popular track to the top of Mulhacén starts at the Hoya del Portillo parking and picnic area, located a 20-minute drive from the beautiful village of Capileira in the Alpujarra region. From there, you hike up through a fragrant pine forest before emerging onto the vast plains at the mountain’s base. This is where the snow-topped giant awaiting your arrival first becomes visible – a view so amazing that it spurs you onto the summit. Allow seven hours for the return trek.
Capileira-Alcazaba
Although not as high as Mulhacén and Veleta, the 3,371-metre Alcazaba is one of the most isolated mountains in the Sierra Nevada , requiring at least a 20-kilometre trek to reach its desolate summit. The most spectacular route starts from the Alto del Chorrillo parking area, located a 45-minute drive above Capileira. From here, allow eight hours for the return walk, or split your trek in two by sleeping at the excellent Refugio Poquiera . The final ascent is steep and the track is barely visible at points, so good navigation skills are essential.
Vereda de la Estrella
The Vereda de Estrella – named after the Estrella copper mine which it was built to access – is one of the most famous tracks in the Sierra Nevada . Beginning at Barranco de San Juan , a parking area outside the lovely village of Güéjar Sierra, 24 kilometres east of Granada, it snakes through a deep valley from which you can enjoy some breathtaking views of Veleta, Mulhacén and Alcazava, ranged formidably side-by-side like colossal sentries. The return hike takes about six hours.
Dilar-Trevenque
Situated just outside the small town of Dilar, a 20-minute drive from Granada , is the Sierra Nevada ’s Cumbres Verdes region. Here you can trek to the 2,079-metre summit of Trevenque, a four-hour return route that starts and finishes at a wonderful country restaurant called La Fuente del Hervidero . Trevenque might not be as tall as Alcazaba, Veleta or Mulhacén, but its final ascent is steep and rocky, with a track that’s practically invisible at times. It’s a challenge that will only make your post-trek pint at Hervidero taste even sweeter.

Tucked away in the south of Spain, in the center of Andalucía, lies another world. A world of soaring, snow clad peaks, sleepy white villages and deep valleys, far removed from the crowded beaches of the Costa del Sol. Relatively few foreign visitors to the region venture into the Sierra Nevada, especially in winter when snow normally lies over the mountains from December until May. It's a very special place.
This is our backyard!

Spain's Hidden Secret!
It is a very special place and there is tremendous scope here for those who prefer their mountains wild and dramatic! On clear days it is possible to view the coasts of North Africa some 200km away across the Mediterranean sea. It is a relatively small range of mountains (90km long by 35km wide) sat in the Granada province of Andalucía, Spain. The area provides great opportunities for all, from the high and wild mountains in winter, to the more gentle spanish walking found in the hills of the Alpujarras.
Where is Spain's Sierra Nevada located?
The Sierra Nevada is located near Granada in Southern Spain. It is not only one of Europe’s most southerly mountain ranges, but also contains the highest peaks in western Europe outside of the Alps. What it lacks in size it makes up for in altitude with over 25 peaks above 3000m. These include the highest point in western Europe outside the Alps, Mulhacén at 3482m.
Total flexibility
We provide customized trips to meet your specific timeline and preferences. The Sierra Nevada offers convenient accessibility, making it an ideal destination for impromptu getaways, weekend retreats, or brief respites. Its proximity to major airports and efficient motorway networks further enhance its appeal. With a wide range of offerings, there is guaranteed to be something that piques the interest of every individual.
Experience you can trust!

"Big shout out to Richard from the logistical team I used down here, Spanish Highs. The Sierra Nevada, how beautiful is that, it has a stark beauty to it. A lot of the guides that I work alongside in Europe have talked about the Sierra Nevada, looks really wild and remote, and it is. Good weather this time of year, generally, it's just had it's first dusting of snow and it ticked all the boxes, relatively easy to get to, covid friendly, and I will certainly be coming back, for sure. It's a really interesting, none aggressive, in terms of the hills are quite rolling but there's some fantastic ridge lines, scrambling with abseils and easy grade climbing, great food, great coffee and great climate. Yeah definitely be going back, it's a beautiful place. Thanks guys for everything. You guys have been magical on organising this trip."

Great Adventure
Brillant and well organised time spent with Spanish Highs climbing Mulhacen mountain and walking Ruta Medieval, Taha del Pitres. Filipe and Sean guided us up the mountain , and made us feel at ease, then Richard guided us through lovely Spanish villages and to beautiful waterfall's. We also got taken to a lovely restaurant after one of hikes for a beer and pizza. Would highly recommend.

Hiking Sierra Nevada Mountains: Spain Trekking Tour with Sierra y Sol
I found Sierra y Sol online and got excited about the countless tours I found listed on their site. I picked the one that looked most interesting to me, the Dehesa del Camarate and emailed to ask about setting up a hike. But the suggestion I got from the owner, Teresa, was even better! She suggested that we visit 3 very different regions in the Sierra Nevada mountains in one day, doing some hiking at each one. It sounded like the perfect way to get to know the area quickly!
Check out my breakdown of our full day hiking Sierra Nevada mountains with Sierra y Sol tours , plus a video of the day below.
Preparation: Hiking Sierra Nevada Mountains
Teresa with Sierra y Sol tours made sure that our day of hiking Sierra Nevada mountains went smoothly from start to finish. Before our tour, she sent us an email with instructions on what to wear, and what food to bring. This was super helpful so we knew how to be prepared for the different climates and make sure we had enough water and food supplies for the day. I’ve been on some tours where I had to go out of my way to ask these questions, so it was great to have a proactive tour operator that wanted to make sure we’d be comfortable and prepared.
Besides that, Sierra y Sol provides hiking sticks to their tour members. I found this so helpful since I would never be able to travel with the large and cumbersome sticks. But they were very useful at certain portions of the hike, especially the loose gravel sections of the first portion of our hiking Sierra Nevada mountains.
Our day began meeting at a central point at 8am to get on the road. The meeting point was easy to get to and centrally located.
Teresa had suggested that we bring 2 liters of water each. My friend and I planned to buy our water on the way to meet Sierra y Sol the morning of our tour. However we didn’t realize that Spain wakes up quite late, so on our walk at 7:30am, literally nothing was open. Luckily, once we met Teresa, she suggested we stop at a gas station on the way out of town. It was the only thing open, so we were very happy to be able to stock up on our much needed water!
Haza Larguilla: Hiking Sierra Nevada Mountains
We then continued on to our first stop on our tour hiking Sierra Nevada mountains - Haza Larguilla. Each place we visited was incredibly different from the next.
Haza Larguilla is a dry, mostly scrubby mountain range. The path is gravely, and there are two nice peaks you can climb to that are a little bit challenging, but don’t take much time to reach.
The sun was just starting to rise, so we had lots of views of pretty misty mountains and early morning light filtering through the peaks.
We began with a lesson in the geography and history of the Sierra Nevada mountain range. Teresa had a great topographical map, that made it easier to understand the elevation and how the range was formed.
Teresa taught us that millions of years ago, the range were just some small islands in the ocean. Over time the plates below shifted and the earth rose up out of the sea, becoming the Andalusian region of Spain.
We learned so much about the unique topography of the Granada region For instance, the highest point is 3478 meters or 11,411 feet. And this range is extremely close to the coast. So the elevation goes from sea level all the way up to 11,411 feet within only 75 kilometers. This makes for extremely varied climates all within a close range of each other.
As we began our hike, Teresa would point out rock formations that she had explained to us earlier, or any other interesting thing like a plant that was native to the region.
We continued up, winding up some switchbacks until we reached the first peak. There was a great view of the range and valley below. We continued down and back up to the second peak which had another amazing view. And we had the peaks totally to ourselves at that hour (remember 10am is still early for Spaniards!) 🙂
Carcavas del Marchal: Hiking Sierra Nevada Mountains
Our next stop was the amazing canyon and rock formations at Carcavas del Marchal. This was my favorite part of the day - this national park is incredibly unique and beautiful. The dramatic rock formations almost looked like something out of the American southwest.
We were surrounded by orange and yellow flat plateaus followed by a dramatic cliff into a wide and flat basin. The rock formations of the cliffs were textured and so interesting to look at.
Teresa again gave us an explanation of how this topography was formed. Millions of years ago, the strait of Gibraltar was not a straight, but a land mass connecting Africa to Europe. Instead there was a sea that connected the Atlantic Ocean to the Mediterranean that passed through this valley. Over millions of years the land masses changed, but this deep valley remained, and the water that passed through it created the erosion that made the unique rock formations and caves. Many locals now live in cave houses in the mountain. The home will have a normal front facade, but the rest of the home will actually be in the cave.
We walked around the top of the plateau, marveling at the dramatic cliffs and rocks. I loved the deep orange and yellow colors of the earth here. I would have loved to stay longer, or do some hiking down into the basin.
Dehesa del Camarate: Hiking Sierra Nevada Mountains
Our last stop was the Dehesa del Camarate - a completely different type of landscape, but still in the same mountain range. This time we’d be hiking Sierra Nevada mountains in a forested and lush area that reminded me a bit of the American Northeast.
First, we needed to refuel with some lunch! We sat in a nice wooded area and pulled out the food we brought along. Teresa and her husband shared some fresh tomatoes and quince paste with manchego cheese.
After finishing up our lunch, we were ready to continue on! We started our hike on the main trail and passed some other families out enjoying the day.
The changing of fall colors here makes hiking Sierra Nevada mountains popular this time of year. Since we were hiking in October, we saw lots of trees changing to yellow, orange, red, and pink as we hiked.
The path was well maintained and wide. We hiked up and up switchbacks passing cows on our way. This area was traditionally used by farmers to move their cattle or livestock across for grazing or to find food. This is still allowed in the Sierra Nevada mountain national park since it was a traditional use of the land.
The full Dehesa del Camarate hike takes a full day. But since we were visiting 3 different regions of the Sierra Nevada mountains in one day, we would only have time for a portion of the hike. So we hiked up to a mountain pass, getting a good view of valley below.
By this time, we were pretty tired! So we were ready to head back down.
Final Thoughts on Hiking Sierra Nevada Mountains with Sierra y Sol
I loved hiking Sierra Nevada mountains with Sierra y Sol. I learned so so much about the history, culture, and geology of this region of Spain. Over the next few days, I would see or hear something in Granada, and would remember something Teresa taught us during our tour. It helped to connect a lot of dots, giving me a better understanding of this part of Spain and a better appreciation for everything else I learned after.
Teresa is an extremely passionate tour guide. It’s obvious she has a deep love for Andalusia and wants to continue to learn and impart this knowledge on others. Her enthusiasm is infectious and makes the tour that much more fun. We loved learning about Granada, the Sierra Nevada mountains, and Andalusia through her eyes.
The tour itself was so interesting. I’ve never visited 3 such different regions in one day, let alone hiked, explored and learned about them. It was so cool to see how diverse hiking Sierra Nevada mountains can be.
Sierra y Sol’s tours are completely customizable. Teresa seems to know everything about the region and wants to make the best tour possible for anyone who books with her. If you’re interested in getting to know a wide variety of regions and landscapes, the 3 region tour is an excellent way to do that. Or if you have other interests, physical limitations, or anything else - just tell Teresa and she’ll recommend a perfect tour for you.
I’d highly recommend booking a trekking tour with Sierra y Sol if you’re interested in hiking Sierra Nevada mountains. They’re experts on the area, passionate and friendly, and you’ll have a great day enjoying the gorgeous scenery of the Sierra Nevada mountains!

I love your hiking series! So many amazing places that only hiking could bring us closer to the amazing natural landscape!
First of all, Teresa looks super fit! I would not want to mess with her! I haven’t thought about hiring a hiking guide while traveling in Europe, but what an awesome idea. I trust my hubby with all his GPS contraptions, but it would be nice to get all the anecdotal information from someone who knows the trails, that is a bonus!

What a fun day! It sounds like a dream to cover that much geography in one day. I bet it was so interesting to have the opportunity to also learn so much about the area!
Looks like a challenge, but I imagine it was so worth it! The geology is stunning, and I love those fall colors. It’s the best feeling to conquer a mountain!

Sierra Nevada Challenge
Sierra nevada: 3 peaks challenge.
The integral crossing of the three thousand in Sierra Nevada , is a route that runs through the Sierra Nevada from North to South passing through the entire three thousand rope.
The three thousand rope is a line drawn for about 70 km from Cerro Pelao (3.182meters) to Caballo (3.013meters), passing and crowning the most significant peaks such as Mulhacen (3.482m), Alcazaba (3.366m), Veleta (3.398m) and many more during the route. Up to 15 peaks of more than three thousand meters can be climbed in 3 days.
It is a very interesting route in terms of nature, landscape and adventure; and of medium-high difficulty, we will walk during 11-hour every days.
Although you are almost always three thousand meters high, slopes of 700m to 1200m are overcome every day.

After a brisk walk -and crawl- the group will end up at an opening that contains numerous waterfalls . Here, guests can explore different waterfalls and even bathe under them.
3. Hanging Bridge & Getting Back
After all the waterfalls are explored, the group will start its return journey. On their way back to the transportation, they will have to cross a long, hanging bridge, walk by the rocky terrains, and climb short distances when necessary .

Spain – Alpujarra Hiking Tour of Andalusia
- 7 Nights / 8 Days
- Difficulty: Fit 3 out of 5
- Self-Guided Hiking
Spain Hiking Tour in Andalusia Self-Guided: The Alpujarra is a region of mountain villages to the south of the Sierra Nevada Mountains, which are nestled in between sheltered valleys and gorges, running down towards the Mediterranean Sea. Its terraced farmlands have a year-round supply of water from melting snow above, giving the area the appearance of a high-altitude oasis. Its strategic location close to the Mediterranean beside the high-elevation mountains, which are declared a National Park and Nature Reserve, plus the charming, tiny white villages periodically dotting the hillsides, makes this region the perfect place for walking and hiking. Here we invite you to enjoy a week of intermediate-level hiking, staying in peaceful family-run hotels in three different villages. Culturally, the area is fascinating because its fifty or so villages were the last strongholds of the Spanish Muslims. These unique villages have held on to their past. You can still see traditional architecture similar to that used by the Berber tribes of North Africa: terraced clusters of square houses with flat clay and slate roofs, like those found in the Rif and Atlas Mountains of Morocco.
Expert Tip: Consider this trip for spring or late fall!

How to get to Rio Molinos Bayarcal
The trailhead of Rio Molinos goes from the highest village in Almeria, Bayarcal (1258 masl). It’s not easy to get to the village by bus and the few buses that go take forever, so I highly recommend that you go by car.
It takes about 1 hr 20 min to drive from Almeria to Bayarcal, an hour from Guadix, and one and a half hours from Granada.
It’s easy to park at the bottom of the village, just as you enter if you come from Almeria and the coast. To the left, on the road, you’ll see a few parking spots with a view.
From there, you just walk straight up through the village and you’ll see the hike well signposted on your left-hand side within minutes.
From Bayarcal, it’s only 25 minutes to get to Hoya de La Ragua to the trailhead of Almeria’s highest mountain, El Chullo (2613 masl), which is a beautiful 4-hour hike.
When is the best time to hike Rio Molinos
Rio Molinos can be hiked all year round, even with dogs, as there are no pine trees, thus no processionary caterpillars to worry about. If you take your dog hiking, you should read this post .
Even in summer, it’s a comfortable hike, as you can walk in the water in large parts of the trail and even go for a swim. Make sure you check out my tips for hiking in the heat before you go.
Spring is lush and green, with a wide variety of flowers and the water runs vividly from all the melted snow in the higher Sierra Nevada.
In winter, there is less water and most of the trees are bare, but that doesn’t make it a bad hike. It’s still a peaceful and stunning trail that won’t disappoint.
What to bring
Before you go hiking it’s important to prepare properly so you leave no trace. You can read more about the 7 principles here .
It’s worth noting that in the spring and early summer when water levels are high, there’s a big chance you’ll get your feet wet (and you might even want to!) Make sure you wear shoes that can get wet and that you can walk in the water with.
Water hiking shoes or regular sneakers that can get wet will do on this hike, though there is a short, near-vertical incline where you’ll need good grip, so make sure you don’t wear your oldest, worn shoes.
Other than this, check the weather forecast for Bayárcal in El Tiempo before you go, especially in winter. Due to the altitude, temperatures can differ a lot from the coast.
Read my complete list of hiking gear here and the best backpacks for day hikes here .
Here are the main things to bring for hiking Rio Molinos Bayarcal:
- water bottle
- shoes for change (unless you don’t mind driving in wet shoes)
- swimwear in summer
- towel in summer
- sunscreen in summer

Where to stay when hiking Rio Molinos
There are no hotels in Bayárcal itself, so the closest place to stay is Laroles, which is less than a 15-minute drive away. Alternatively, stay in Almeria or Roquetas de Mar on the coast, and you’ll have about 1 hour and 20 minutes to drive there.
Where to stay in Laroles
Camping Alpujarras
Right outside the village, you can camp in your own tent or rent a fully equipped bungalow at camping Alpujarras. The camping has a wonderful pool area and a restaurant.
Country house Cortijo Brazal La Ventaja
These two-bedroom apartments are stunningly situated in a green area with breathtaking views. With a barbecue and outdoor pool, you’re set for a wonderful vacation.
Where to stay in Roquetas de Mar
Roquetas de Mar is a popular beach town right outside the city of Almeria, perfect for a few days of relaxing and close to hiking opportunities.
Destinos de Sol La Minería Roquetas de Mar
This apartment hotel is a great base for any activity. With only a few minutes walk to the beach and to bars and restaurants and private parking. It also allows pets for an extra cost of 10 Euros a night.
Where to stay in Almeria
Almeria is a terribly underrated city in Andalucia, but it definitely deserves a few days, so why not stay there when hiking in Sierra Nevada?
Aire Hotel & Ancient Baths
For a little luxury, stay at this wonderful hotel, right by the Alcazaba of Almeria. Some rooms have a terrace or balcony and there is a rooftop pool with astounding views.

Hiking Rio Molinos Bayarcal
Once you follow the signs to Rio Molinos Trail from the main street in Bayarcal, you’ll first walk down a winding paved walkway, under a bridge, and keep going until you get to the path.
The trail is well-marked and it’s hard to get lost. After passing an open part with fig trees and awesome views of the village above you, the forest closes up a bit more and you get to the river. At first, the trail crosses the river, you can see an old water mill, and you follow a short, steep incline.
Following, is the best part of the hike through the thick, green forest, following the river, crossing it here and there, and if you look for them, you might just find some of the hidden water holes where you can go for a dip.
If you look closely, you’ll also see different poems painted onto the rocks along the trail. They’re all in Spanish, and I really love them!
After leaving the river, you start climbing up the side of the ravine to mesmerizing views on the final walk back to the village. Just follow the main street down again to reach the car.
There is also a stunning old church in Bayarcal that you’ll walk past on the way down which is worth a visit if you have the time.

Reflections on hiking Rio Molinos Almeria
Hiking Rio Molinos is one of the best walking experiences in Andalucia . It’s a short walk yet it’s beautiful from start to end. In the warmer months when the water levels are high it’s great for cooling down and enjoying the vivid river and glittering water holes.
During late autumn, the fall colors give this walk a picturesque touch. In the winter months, it’s great to walk your dog without worrying about pine processionary caterpillars.
It’s truly a hike that changes with the seasons and every season has its charm.

2 thoughts on “ Hiking Rio Molinos: How to hike Almeria’s lush river walk ”
Did this hike today, it’s very beautiful. A couple of flags though: 1. Just below the fig tree section, someone is releasing really horrible smelling water down the marked path! It’s avoidable (follow the paved road down the curve and it’ll join up again soon) but was almost enough to put me off continuing, in case it turned out a lot of the hike was like this. It wasn’t and I’m very glad I carried on! 2. Near the end of the river section, near the deep swimming hole, the (green and white) markings go in two separate directions: over the river and halfway up the other side of the valley before eventually telling you to turn around (??), and the *correct* direction of continuing back and forth along the river a little further before going up the Bayarcal side of the valley. So if you cross the river and realise you’re going uphill and back towards the village but on the wrong side, go back to the river and you should see the correct route. No idea why the markings are like this! But it really is a beautiful hike, the river and trees are gorgeous and it’s an interesting walk with the occasional fun steep bit.
Thank you for the heads up! I haven’t experienced that smelling section so I really hope it was just something temporary! Because that can’t be good for either nature or hikers enjoying the trail.

It’s like travelling back 700 years: healthy pleasures in rural Andalucía
A group of seven Moorish villages in southern Spain are the perfect place to recharge – offering mountain air, sparkling springs and any excuse for a party
O n our first morning in Atalbéitar, I walk into the kitchen to make coffee and wonder if I’m feeling the effects of the previous night’s festivities. Then I remember it’s not me; it’s the kitchen floor, which is on a gentle slope. I have to be careful carrying the coffee back to bed as the steps are at different heights, and the doorways are small enough to bump your head on. As I lie there, beneath a ceiling constructed of woven chestnut branches and stone slabs, I survey my surroundings, and come to the pleasing conclusion that there’s not a single right angle in sight.
We are staying in a Moorish house in this Andalucían village, and I may as well have travelled back the 700 years to when it was first built. I’ve been visiting Spain for years, as my husband leads wilderness tours here and we’ve travelled from one end to the other, seeking out hidden corners and mountain trails. But arriving in Atalbéitar at night, negotiating its tangle of passageways, ducking under ancient covered walkways while spring water rushes past our feet, we both agree, we’ve never been anywhere quite like this. The village gives the impression of having grown out of the land, rather than been imposed upon it. Its streets are too narrow for cars, the village cats roam freely, and the only sound is the occasional bleating of goats across the slopes. As I look out over the valley on this crisp winter’s morning, the sun is blazing in a solid blue sky and early almond blossom adds splashes of pastel pink to the rocky hills. Everything is still and silent.
Atalbéitar is part of La Tahá, a group of seven villages in the Alpajurras region of Andalucía. It’s a tiny speck on the map of Spain, on a southern slope of the Sierra Nevada overlooking the deep gorge of the Trevelez River. Settled by the Nasrid dynasty of Granada, the people who built its Alhambra, the whitewashed villages of Pitres, Atalbéitar, Capilerilla, Mecina, Mecinilla, Fondales and Ferreirola have retained their Moorish feel thanks to their unique architecture and remote location. Access into the valley is by a winding mountain road that passes through Pitres, the main town, but all the other villages are reached by spurs off this road, so there is no passing trade.
In Atalbéitar, this is no cause for concern. There is no trade to be had. It has a population of 31, and no shop or restaurant, although there is an improvised social club/bar, run by village stalwart Jesus, who opens up his home on the main square when the mood takes him. That’s not to say there isn’t a lively social scene. La Tahá boasts a busy calendar of festivals, many of them relating to Easter and various Saint’s days, but some are specific to the region, such as an autumn chestnut festival called Mauraca, and the summer Santa Cruz fiesta, which includes a traditional “burial of the fox”, with a fancy dress parade culminating in a bonfire cremation of a mock fox stuffed with fireworks.
Our arrival, in mid-January, coincides with the first festival of the year, Chisco de San Antón, when each of the La Tahá villages celebrates with a bonfire in the central plaza and a feast of barbecued pork and local sweet wine. The definitive reason for the festivities seems to have been lost in the mists of time – it’s all about the party. The most striking aspect for us – arriving fresh from cash-strapped England with its bankrupt councils – is that all the meat and bread and booze is provided by the local authority.
Soon, the flames are rising high, a jam-band of local musicians has set up by the fire and the scent of roasting meat fills the air. The crowd is small and friendly, a mix of ages and nationalities, which according to our hosts, Scottish-Spanish couple, Tom and Carmen, is typical of La Tahá. The area is a quiet success story that contradicts rural Spain’s usual lament of empty villages and dying populations. Over the years, the seven villages have attracted an international crowd of artists, musicians and writers. The nearest major town, Orgiva, is famous for its longstanding hippy commune and bohemian reputation, and La Tahá, 45 minutes’ drive away, with its rambling old houses and fertile land, is a perfect location to seek out la buena vida .
We’re invited into the jam session, and a truly outre mix of banjo, harmonica, guitar, drums and penny whistle are soon bashing out a 12-bar blues with improvised Romanian lyrics. We use a jar of lentils from our rental property as a percussion instrument. The meat and wine seem limitless but in true British form, we peak early and leave the locals to their late-night carousing.
In the morning, steadying my sea legs on the kitchen floor, I remind myself of our holiday intentions: two weeks of healthy living after the excesses of the festive season, starting with a heart-pumping walk each day. The villages of La Tahá are connected by a network of trails, and over the course of our stay we vow to visit each village on foot. Our first trek takes us along the river gorge to Pitres: it’s a dramatic, rugged hike punctuated by gasps of both amazement and a shameful lack of fitness.
The slopes of the Trevelez valley are insanely steep, winding through enchanted forests of pine and oak, with orchards of orange and lemon trees in the villages, and wild figs and pomegranates at every turn. The valley’s geology is striated with mica and the landscape shimmers silver in the sunlight. Walking this lush, verdant land, we find it hard to believe that much of Spain is in the midst of a crippling drought. Streams pour down the mountainside and natural springs bubble from the rock. In the depth of the forest we come to the most famous spring, Fuente la Gaseosa, where a high concentrate of iron carbonates in the rock has created a natural supply of agua con gas , fizzing straight out of the ground.
We start our walks with the most challenging uphill climbs but eventually make it down to the bottom of the valley, drawn to the roar of the Trevelez long before we can see it. Our efforts are rewarded with a final scramble through the undergrowth to an icy dip in a natural pool beneath a Roman bridge.
The clean light, abundant water and fresh mountain air do wonders for everything that ails you. It’s hard to believe, in our ultra-connected western European lives, that such magical, unchanged places can still be found. The villages themselves are beautiful in their simplicity, with just a couple of humble, old-school hotels, and cafes serving good coffee and not much else. There’s a weekly market in Pitres, and vans selling bread and fish do the rounds of the villages.
La Tahá provides a truly natural detox, with a refreshing lack of wellbeing waffle. There are no expensive retreats, or burned-out execs turned wellness gurus exhorting you to live your best life. Just a horde of territorial cats, an old man in his pyjamas grunting “Buenas” from his balcony every morning, and all the bounty of mother earth – everything you need for the good life.
