nakhon Pathom features an ancient religious structure called Phra Pathom Chedi, the first religious Landmark that signified the introduction of Buddhism into Thailand . Nakhon Pathom was once a place of royal and religious significance-but time and the changing geographic landscape altered the province, shifting its appearance as the sea retreated more than 50 kilometers from Thailand's central plains.

Despite the changes, this is still an attractive destination for visitors because the location is convenient (about 50 kilometers from Bangkok), and it houses one of the greatest Buddhist monuments in the region.

Since Nakhon Pathom is a short drive from the Thai capital, the area's main sightseeing attractions can be taken in during a quick day trip. Or you can allow a few days for a visit and enjoy everything the area has to offer.

Known as the "holiest and first among chedis," Phra Pathom Chedi is the single most important attraction in this ancient enclave. At 118 meters, (127 meters including the terraces), it is the tallest Buddhist monument in the world, standing higher even than the famous Shwedagon Pagoda in Yangon, Burma.

The legend of the chedi is a tragic one: It's said that an astrologer told the ancient King Phya Kong that one day his son would kill him. The king sent his son to live in the forest, where a woman found him and raised him. As a young man, the son, called Phya Pan, entered the service of the King of Ratchaburi, who was a vassal of the king of the neighboring kingdom Nakhon Chaisi.

Phya Pan's great wisdom and prudence brought him to the attention of the king, who adopted him. Phya Pan persuaded him to wage war against his feudal lord and, during the ensuing battle, killed his own father. After the victory, he followed local custom by marrying the queen, his mother, but then learned the story of his origins. The dagoba (tomb) he built as an act of atonement was the predecessor of the Phra Pathom Chedi and is today concealed within the larger structure.

The great chedi stands on a circular terrace in the middle of a square park, surrounded by a latticework wall, with the main entrance on the north side. The bot, one of the buildings on the terrace, holds a Buddha made of clear quartzite and overlaid with lacquer and gold leaf. This Dvaravati-style figure shows the Buddha seated in the European pose, "the Buddha of the future."

The four wiharns consist of an open lobby and an inner room. A bronze statue of a standing Buddha in the Sukhothai style, known as Phra Ruang Rojanarit, stands in the lobby of the northern wiharn and is a highly revered piece. An inscription on the wall of the wiharn says that the ashes of King Mongkut are interred in the plinth.

The old temple museum, containing Mon stucco and stone sculptures, is in the wiharn near the East entrance. The main building of the museum dates back to 1979 and is by the South steps. Here, you'll see stone tablets from Nakhon Pathom's earliest days, as well as coins, statues of Buddha, and everyday objects from Thailand's ancient past.

There are also a number of stone and terra-cotta sculptures and a bas-relief of the Buddha preaching to his first disciples, as well as items showcasing Nakhon Pathom's history and development through the decades.

Every year pilgrims from all over Thailand flock to Nakhon Pathom's Grand Temple festival in November. The chedi itself is lit up with fairy lights while classical dance drama, shadow plays, and other entertainments take place on the terraces.

During the festival, the great square at the chedi's foot is turned into an amusement park, buzzing with activities and plenty of stalls serving hot food. Don't miss out on the chance to try Khao Lam, a traditional local dessert of sweet sticky rice served on bamboo. There's also a sprawling market here during the festival, where you can buy anything from Buddhist amulets to second-hand clothes, trinkets, and souvenirs.

In 1910, before he became king, Rama VI built the Sanam Chan Palace in the northwest of the town. The massive complex has some interesting buildings in a mixture of Thai and European styles. There are a number of ornate halls that were used as theaters and meeting rooms, as well as the Phiman Pathom Hall, where Rama VI is said to have seen a miraculous vision of Phra Pathom Chedi.

In the audience chamber, a small shrine contains a statue of the Hindu god Ganesha, with the head of an elephant and a human body with many arms. The curious statue of a dog in front of the Chali Mongkol Asana, as the building is called, is probably meant to be Ya Le-the favorite dog of King Rama IV.

These buildings now house provincial government offices but still provide an interesting look into the ancient society that once existed in this unique part of Thailand.

While the true origins of this temple are unknown, archeologists believe it dates back to the late 18th century. Today, monks practice here the art of giving sak yant tattoos , a traditional art form in which they use a long stick to tattoo a blessing onto the back.

Tourists can visit and get a tattoo, though the monk chooses which to use. These are meant to protect the bearer from evil, and bring them strength and luck.

Wat Bang Phra is the site of the annual Sak Yant Festival, when over 10,000 people flock to Nakhon Pathom to practice and honor this ancient tattoo art form. Many become "possessed" during the festival, acting out the behaviors of animal gods or behaving erratically as they claim to be moved by spirits.

Wat Phra Ngam is known as the "temple of magnificent Buddha images," a site where a number of significant historical artifacts were excavated. Finds included sandstone Buddha images, the Sema Dhama Chakra (a Buddhist Wheel of Virtue that marked the boundaries of the temple and sacred areas), statues of crouching deer, and both bronze and earthen Buddha images.

The temple was built during the reign of King Rama V, in the late 1800s. Many of the relics and artifacts excavated here are on display at the National Museum in Bangkok.

East and West meet here, where guests can enjoy the many Italian-style gardens in a uniquely Thai setting and relax after visiting some of the ancient sites of Nakhon Pathom.

This massive green space of 55 acres is home to beautiful floral displays, as well as a handicraft market, a mini floating market, and an outdoor food court offering Thai specialties and snacks. Things to do here include attending cultural shows and ceremonies, such as traditional Thai folk dancing and muay Thai displays. Elephant shows and rides are also offered here-something to keep in mind if you don't approve of elephants in captivity.

If you want to spend the night here and explore in the early morning, before the heat of the day rolls around, there's also a riverside hotel with its own restaurant on site.

This massive collection of vintage cars and motorcycles belongs to a Thai businessman who in 2007 decided to set up his own museum. More than 500 vehicles now occupy a large hangar in Nakhon Pathom in an eclectic exhibit that features many unusual and even quirky examples of everyday transportation.

There are only a few signs here and not much logical order-chronological or otherwise-to the parking of the vehicles. Instead, the collection is here to be admired, explored, and, often enough, obsessed over.

The museum has a significant number of three-wheel cars that look very similar to modern-day tuk-tuks (Thai motorcycle taxis) but were created by well-known brands such as Lambretta and Daihatsu.

Old American "muscle" cars do have their own dedicated section-and the collection includes beautiful elongated Checkers, 1950s sports cars, and even NYC yellow taxis. There's also a DeLorean (the famous "Back to the Future" car) and buses, a micro BMW Isetta and other cars with no side doors (instead, the entire front of the car opens up to allow access), tractors, and single-person helicopters here.

Located in front of the Lam Phaya temple, this floating market is less commercial than the ones you'll find in Bangkok. Rather than being an artificial set up to attract tourists, this is an authentic local market where people come to sell hand-made products, fruits, and even clothes. Many boat sellers also offer homemade food, including traditional dishes such as chicken Biryani and Thai vermicelli.

The floating market also includes a small museum set in a teak building. Here, visitors can see agriculture tools, pottery, and everyday life items that have shaped the life of the locals through the decades.

It's hard to describe Woodland Muangmai, an art village meets fantasy land where several legends and stories known as "Tales of the Wood" are told through hand-sculpted wood. The carvings here are actually all unrelated and come from a private collection encompassing carvings that go as far back as 200 years-but they have been arranged and divided into zones that together tell a story.

Visitors can enter the Abyss Room, the Buddha Room, the Dragon Cave room, and more-spaces where special effects, lights, and sound will guide them and explain the hundreds of carvings around.

One of those places you have to see to believe, Woodland Muangmai offers a wonderful insight into Southeast Asian wooden craftsmanship, and it's a very unique destination when you want to see something different.

At the top of the unique places to visit in the region is this stunning temple, dedicated to the worship of the God of Darkness, Phra Rahu. Thai legends describe Phra Rahu as a moody monster who regularly eats his brothers: the sun and the moon. As a result, he causes eclipses and often brings about disasters and financial harm. Visitors come here to bring offerings in the form of black coffee, black sticky rice, or black beans in the hopes of obtaining courage, wealth, and success, or erasing bad luck from their lives.

Wat Sisrathong is Thailand's most famous temple dedicated to Phra Rahu. A stunning gold and black statue of the god sits under a sala as you enter the temple grounds. Additional ornate buildings hold Buddha statues, including a golden Buddha head found on the grounds when excavating to build the temple.

Nakhon Pathom makes for a great day trip from Bangkok, so many visitors who travel here don't need to stay overnight. If you want to truly explore, take some photos, and perhaps visit more than just the main spots, booking a room for the night is a great idea.

Nakhon Pathom (นครปฐม, also Nakorn Pathom ) is a city and province in the Bangkok Metropolitan Area , around 56 km from Bangkok . It is home to the "world's tallest stupa".

The town's main attraction is Phra Pathom Chedi , a 127 m stupa, which marks the approximate location of the region's first exposure to Buddhism and Indian civilisations.

Nakhon Pathom used to be by the sea but the shifting coastline now places it about 50 km inland. Archaeological findings date back to the 4th century and the first mention of a stupa was in the year 675 CE.

While Nakhon Pathom was a prosperous city during the pre-Angkorian Dvaravati period; it was the Angkorian Empire that left a greater mark in the 11th century. However, shifting landscape and the altering of the river course caused drought that led to the abandonment of Nakhon Pathom in favour of the new riverside settlement of Nakhon Chaisi .

The ruins of the Angkorian stupa inspired King Rama IV to build the current giant, which was completed in 1870. He also commanded that the Chedi Bucha canal be dug to facilitate transport.

During the reign of King Rama V, the construction of railways led to more changes. The population of Thana Subdistrict, Nakhon Chaisi District, was relocated to Nakhon Pathom.

Government buses (lines 83 and 997) leave from Bangkok's Southern Bus Terminal . The trip costs 40 baht in first class and takes about an hour in good traffic. Buses leave every 10 minutes from 04:10 until 21:30.

There are 2nd class buses to Kanchanaburi every 15–30 minutes.

In addition there is a non-stop minibus service between Bangkok and the Big C Superstore in Nakhon Pathom. You can also ask to be dropped off directly in front of Phra Pathom Chedi. In Nakhon Pathom, Big C is on the main road through Nakhon Pathom, and has plenty of four-wheel and two-wheel taxis to take you to your final destination. Cost is 60 baht each way.

By train [ edit ]

Nakhon Pathom is an important rail junction. It is where the line to Kanchanaburi / Nam Tok diverges from the main north-south line. Therefore long distance trains that connect Bangkok's Hualamphong station to the south stop there, as do the trains from Bangkok's Thonburi station to Kanchanaburi and the bridge over the River Kwai. Connections to and from Thonburi are quicker than those to Hualamphong. Tickets are not sold in advance at Nakhon Pathom Station, and can only be purchased on the day you take the train.

From Bangkok, driving on the old route of Petchkasem Rd (Hwy 4) passing Aom Noi, Aom Yai, Sam Phran to Nakhon Pathom or driving on a new route from Bangkok, passing Buddhamonthon, Nakhon Chaisi to Nakhon Pathom. The new route is Rte 338 and originates on Pinklao Road. The elevated part from Pin Klao Bridge to Buddhamonthon 2 Rd is toll-free and cuts down travel time considerably.

• Nakhon Pathom Palace (พระราชวังนครปฐม): At the command of King Rama IV, the palace was built near the Phra Pathom Chedi, similar in concept to those palaces in the Ayutthaya period whereby the king commanded that a palace be built on the perimeter of the temple housing the Phra Buddhabat (Buddha's footprint).
• Neun Wat Phra Ngam (เนินวัดพระงาม): Prince Damrong Rachanuphab explained that the origin of the name Wat Phra Ngam (temple of magnificent Buddha images) was due to the beauty of the discovered earthen Buddha images, the temple was given its name. All of the discovered artifacts date back to the Dvaravati period, which are the same age as those found around Phra Pathom Chedi. On weekends, there is a large market selling food, clothes etc. on the street outside the temple.
• Phrabat Somdej Phra Monkut Klao Chaoyuhua Museum (Sanam Chan Palace) (พิพิธภัณฑ์พระบาทสมเด็จพระมงกุฏเกล้าเจ้าอยู่หัว): The palace was constructed at the command of King Rama VI in 1907 when he was crown prince. Sanam Chan Palace covers a vast area with a big court in the middle, surrounded by ring roads, with water canals on the outer perimeter. The beautiful halls in the middle of the Palace include:
• Phiman Pathom Hall (พระที่นั่งพิมานปฐม): It is the first hall to be built in the Sanam Chan Palace. It is of European architecture, a 2-storey building in which King Rama VI resided before his ascension to the throne. As for the Phiman Pathom Hall, it now houses a part of the Nakhon Pathom City Hall. Apirom Reudi Hall (พระที่นั่งอภิรมย์ฤดี) is a two-storey hall to the south of Phiman Pathom hall. It houses the offices of the Nakhon Pathom City Hall.
• Vatchari Romya Hall (พระที่นั่งวัชรีรมยา): This is a two-storey hall. It was built in Thai-style: multi-layered roof with colourful tiles on the turret; with a swan-like finial on the roof ridge, representing the head of garuda and small finials jutting out of the two corners of the gable.
• Samakki Mukmat Hall (พระที่นั่งสามัคคีมุขมาตย์): This is a Thai-style hall. It was a meeting hall for King Rama VI and also where he held court. The hall was also used as a khone theatre ( khone is a Thai play performed by dancers wearing masks). It is used as a meeting hall of Nakhon Pathom Province.
• Phra Tamnak Chali Monkol-asna (พระตำหนักชาลีมงคลอาสน์): The two-storey building is of European architecture, plastered in caramel-yellow, with roof tile in red. It was used as a temporary residence of King Rama VI.
• Phra Tamnak Mari Ratchrat Banlang (พระตำหนักมารีราชรัตบัลลังก์): This is a two-storey wooden building painted in red. The building is opposite Phra Tamnak Chali Monkol-asna and is connected via a walk way.
• Phra Tamnak Tabkaeo (พระตำหนักทับแก้ว): This is a small building that used to be a temporary residence during winter. After a renovation it is a residence of the Palad Changwat of Nakhon Pathom. Around 450 rai (180 acres) of land to the rear of the building is now the campus of Silpakorn University.
• Phra Tamnak Tabkwan (พระตำหนักทับขวัญ): This is a teak building with a palm leaf roof. At the command of King Rama VI, the teak building was constructed to preserve traditional Thai architecture. It is also used for merit making and sometimes classic Thai performances would also be held at this building.
• Thevalai Kanaesuan or Phra Pikkanesh Shrine (เทวาลัยคเณศวร์ หรือ ศาลพระพิฆเณศวร์): It was built to house the image of Phra Pikkanaesuan (or Ganesh), the Indian god of arts. The shrine is in a large field, in front of the Sanam Chan Palace.
• Ya-Lei Monument (อนุเสาวรีย์ย่าเหล): The dog, Ya-Lei, was very close to the heart of King Rama VI. The king was very fond of Ya-Lei, so much so that Ya-Lei was envied, and was later shot by an envious person. King Rama VI was much saddened when Ya-Le died and commanded that a copper statue of Ya-Lei be cast and placed on a pedestal in front of Phra Tamnak Chali Monkol-asna .
• Neun Dhamma Sala (เนินธรรมศาลา): The physical appearance is that of a hill with a tunnel opening that is believed to connect Wat Phra Mayn to Wat Dhamma Sala. From hearsay, there are various valuable treasures like ancient pottery but which may not be taken out because there is a treasure guardian spirit watching over.
• Wat Phra Mayn (วัดพระเมรุ): It is an abandoned temple that nowadays resembles a large hill. Also discovered here are other artefacts which include bronze Buddha images as well as arms, thighs, and hands from a laterite Buddha image, Yaksa Deva (Thai mythical giant gods), Lotus Lion Deva, and stucco relief from the stupa ruins.
• Phra Padhone Chedi (วัดพระประโทณเจดีย์): As Wat Phra Padhone Chedi is in the middle of the ancient city of Nakhon Chaisi thus several artefacts were discovered during excavations. Some of the discovered items include Buddha images, heads of Buddha images and Buddha images in terra cotta, as well as a bronze figure of a garuda gripping naga under its claws, which is the official symbol of King Rama VI.
• Neun Phra or Neun Yai Hom (เนินพระหรือเนินยายหอม): This area was once an ancient temple and that the hill must have been a large chedi that was in the temple compound dating back to the Dvaravati period, or earlier, roughly about 1,000 years ago.
• Buddhamonthon (พุทธมณฑล): A huge upright Buddha image, in walking attitude, measuring about 15.8 metres marks the centre of the area. King Bhumibhol Adulyadej granted the name Phra Sri Sakkaya Thosapol Yan Phratan Buddhamonthon Sutas to the Buddha image. Important Buddhist ceremonies and festivities are held here, such as the Visaka Bucha Day, Makabucha Day, Asanhabucha Day, and Loy Krathong Festival among others
• Open Study Centre or College in the Palace (ศูนย์การศึกษานอกโรงเรียน หรือ วิทยาลัยในวัง): The centre mobilises an ancient school of Thai arts called Chang Sib Mu or 'the ten master crafts', the Thai arts that stem from local wisdom and expertise that Thais managed to retain from their forefathers.
• Misiem Yip Intsoi Arts Garden (สวนศิลปะมีเซียมยิบอินซอย): The garden houses masterpieces created by Madam Misiem Yip Intsoi for educational purposes.
• Don Whai Market (ตลาดดอนหวาย): Behind the Don Whai temple is a market that still retains an appearance of a market dating back to the King Rama VI period.
• Rose Garden (สวนสามพราน): There are a multitude of beautiful floral displays of great variety. A Thai-style houses; parts of the area are hotel, lodges, and golf course. It also features an attractive Thai cultural show that commences daily in the afternoon.
• Thai Human Imagery Museum (พิพิธภัณฑ์หุ่นขี้ผึ้ง): The museum displays lifelike wax/fibreglass sculptures in vivid detail. These breath-taking real-looking human figures of various characteristics and also replicas of important people are displayed in many sections such as the Great Buddhist Monks, former Kings of the Chakri Dynasty, and One Side of Thai Life: Thai Chess, Thai Family, and Abolishing of Slavery, among others.
• Wat Klang Bang Kaew (วัดกลางบางแก้ว): The temple houses a chapel, a vihara, and a Buddha image, all of which are very old and assumed, archaeologically, to have been built in the Ayutthaya period. There is a Phra Phuttha Vithinayok museum, exhibiting historical remains, artefacts, as well as utensils of the late monks: Luang Poo Boon (Phra Phuttha Vithinayok Boon Kanthachoti) and Luang Poo Perm (Phra Phuttha Vithinayok Perm Punyavasano).
• Thai Farmers' Lifestyle Museum (พิพิธภัณฑ์วิถีชาวนาไทย): The house cum museum displays equipment, utensils, and tools, used in rice farming. Also in the compound is a handicraft training centre that trains townspeople to make various products from water hyacinths ( pak tob chawa ).
• Fish Sanctuary (อุทยานปลา): The place is a natural fish sanctuary, which is the habitat of various species of fish typical to the Tha Cheen River.
• Wat Lampaya Floating Market (ตลาดน้ำวัดลำพญา): The floating market was initiated by the Lampaya Subdistrict Cultural Council and Lampaya temple. It is a centre of trade for fruits and vegetables as well as agricultural produce.
• Thai Soang village (หมู่บ้านไทยโซ่ง): The village is home to Thai Soang or Thai Soang Dum (Thai Soang usually wear black dresses) or Lao Soang, who migrated from Ban Nong Prong, Khao Yoi District, Petchaburi, who have a distinct culture and tradition of their own.
• Herbal Grove, Wat Plug Mai Lai (สวนป่าสมุนไพร วัดปลักไม้ลาย): An entrance to the temple can be seen on the left. More than 500 kinds of herbs abound in the grove which covers an area of 92 rai (36.8 acres) and in a tranquil ambiance.
• Kasetsart University, Kamphaeng Saen Campus (Botanical Garden) : In the university compound, there are a number of projects to educate farmers and the general public that include scaled-down projects such as an agricultural technology project, an irrigation system initiated along with the Royal project, an Entomological Park where various species of butterflies are housed, a pilot vegetable plantation plot, and Suan Saen Palm (garden of a hundred thousand palms), which collects various kinds of ornamental palms.
• Kamphaeng Saen (เมืองเก่ากำแพงแสน): this is an ancient town that is worth visiting. It is used as a Boy Scout's camp. The interesting attractions of Kamphaeng Saen include unchanged ditches and earth dikes surrounding the ditches.

• Sight-seeing by boats : there are tours of canals, visiting fruit orchards and orchid farms, this includes:
• Klong (canal) Mahasawat (ล่องเรือเที่ยวคลองมหาสวัสดิ์): A boat ride to see the fruit farmers at work on two sides of the canal, touring orchards of pomelo, guava, sweet coconut, and orchid farms.
• Tha Cheen River (ล่องเรือแม่น้ำท่าจีน): is the place to witness natural ambience along the river and conjoining canals.
• Fruit orchards along Nakhon Chaisi River (Tha Cheen River) (ล่องเรือเที่ยว ชมสวนผลไม้ แม่น้ำนครชัยศรี (แม่น้ำท่าจีน)): The fruit orchards are in Tambon Bangchang, Tambon Klong Chinda, and Chinda Market, all of which are renowned for grapes, mangos, sweet coconuts, and rose apples, as well as floral gardens and other ornamental plant gardens. Plants and agricultural products can be bought directly from farmers. There are cruise services available at Samphran District Office (terminal of Bangkok-Samphran line bus), via Chinda canal and Bangchang canal, passing rose apple orchards, coconut orchards, and orchid farms.
• Pomelo orchards in Nakhon Chaisi (ชมสวนส้มโอนครชัยศรี): Touring of pomelo orchards can be done in Nakhon Chaisi
• Suan Thai Tawee pomelo orchard (ชมสวนส้มโอสวนไทยทวี): This orchard is in Samphran District.
• Banchong Orchid Farm (ชมสวนกล้วยไม้ บรรจง ออร์คิดฟาร์ม): The orchid farm is in Samphran.
• Olan Lake Water Ski (โอฬาร เลค วอร์เตอร์ สกี): On Buddhamonthon IV Road, Klong Yong-Bang Pasi Subdistrict. It is the centre of various water sports including five-pole cable ski and regular water skiing.

• Nakhon Pathom Food and Fruits Fair ( งานเทศกาลอาหาร และผลไม้นครปฐม ). Annually held during the Chinese New Year, around January–February, within the grounds of Phra Pathom Chedi to promote agricultural products and industrial products of the province. It aims to also promote the fruits that are grown in Nakhon Pathom such as pomelo, sweet coconuts, guavas, and bananas. It also features Chinese buffet arrangement contests and fruit contests. • Songkran Festival ( ประเพณีสงกรานต์ ). Held annually from 13–17 April around Phra Pathom Chedi. During the festival, there are many activities such as the of Songkran procession floats, Chinese Dragon and Lion Dances, Bathing of the revered Phra Ruang Rodjanarit, sand Chedi building, Thai opera, and local entertainment. • Buffet for Elephant and Elephant Queen Pageant ( งานเลี้ยงบุฟเฟ่ต์ช้าง และประกวดราชินีช้าง ). Held annually on National Labour day (May 1) at the Samphran Elephant Ground & Zoo to show gratitude to elephants living in the grounds. The Elephant Queen Pageant is held to find a rather plump lady who could interpret and display the elephant’s gentle character. ( updated Aug 2019 )
• Wat Rai Khing Festival ( งานนมัสการปิดทองหลวงพ่อวัดไร่ขิง ). Held annually from the 13th day of the waxing moon to the 4th day of the waning moon in the fifth month of the lunar calendar. There are many goods sold, from various government units and also from farmers. The fair also features fruit contests and there are many kinds of entertainment at night. ( updated Aug 2019 )
• Phra Pathom Chedi Festival ( ประเพณีนมัสการองค์พระปฐมเจดีย์ ). The fair takes place annually from the 12th day of the waxing moon to the 4th day of the waning moon in the 12th month of the lunar calendar. It is held on the grounds of Phra Pathom Chedi. At night, various entertainments are provided. ( updated Aug 2019 )
• Loy Krathong Festival ( งานประเพณีลอยกระทง ). It is held annually on the 15th day of the waxing moon in the 12th month of the lunar calendar (November). The festival is held at Sanam Chan Palace, and features beauty pageants, Krathong contests, hanging lantern contests, and local entertainment, among others. ( updated Aug 2019 )

• Sweet pomelo (ส้มโอหวาน): A major product of Nakhon Chai Si District.
• Fragrant coconut juice (มะพร้าวน้ำหอม)
• Khao lam (ข้าวหลาม): sticky rice mixed with coconut milk and grilled in a bamboo cane.

Eat [ edit ]

• Night Market ( west side of the pagoda ). 18:00 to 23:00 . Many hawker stalls offering a variety of cheap food.  
• Flying Ice Cream . Ice cream excellent Khao Lam (ข้าวหลาม) (sticky rice and coconut milk cooked in bamboo). The sweet pomelo (ส้มโอหวาน) and fragrant coconut juice (มะพร้าวน้ำหอม) are also notable.  
• Ratchaphreuk ( (although there's no English signage) ), Thanon Ratchadamnoen ( on the left a few minutes' walk towards Sanam Chan from the Chedi ). Recognisable by its plastic table and chairs in a comfortable beer garden. Occasional karaoke. The food is good traditional Thai, but you will be tested on your knowledge of Thai cuisine as there is no English menu.  
• Any Order ( Raan A-haan Taam Sung ), Rajdamnern Rd ( toward Sanamchan Palace from the Chedi, at the far corner of the first block on the right, opposite side of 7-Eleven, if you face towards Sanamchan ). Open daily until midnight or 01:00 . Clean and cheap with English menu.  
• Yuer Mai , Rajdamnern Rd ( around 5 mins on the left hand side, opposite side of Catholic Church ). Nice and simple Thai dishes, air conditioning.

An easy day-trip from Bangkok, Nakhon Pathom won't leave you feeling the need to stay the night. But if you want a slow trip, there are plenty of provincial style hotels: designed for Thais, and straight out of the 1970s. At the Nakhon Inn, for example, they haven't changed their brochure since the early 1980s, and the photos of the rooms still match exactly to the rooms, but they are comfortable and prices are very reasonable.

• Mitsampant Hotel , 2/11 Rachadamnern Rd ( above the Mitsampant electric appliance store, right next to the chedi on the west side across from a Shell gas station ), ☏ +66 34 252010 . More or less clean, light and airy, with owners who speak English. Rooms from 200 baht a night, 300 baht for three people. A handout of local map in English is available for free for all tourists. €4.90 .  
• Mitpaisal Hotel , 120/30 Prayapan Rd , ☏ +66 34 242422 . Six-storey hotel near the air-con bus station to Bangkok and the fruit market, less than half a kilometre to the north of the chedi. Better than the Mitsampant and Nakhon Inn, but the price is still affordable. The room and bath are very clean. A handout of the local map in English is available for free with very helpful insight of area of attractions including transport to other popular provinces.  
• Nakhon Inn , 55 Rajivithi Rd , ☏ +66 34 251152 . Large hotel in a small cul-de-sac off the road which the Bangkok buses travel. Very close to the chedi, and a 15 min walk to Sanam Chan. An Internet cafe is located in a shop outside. Opt for a room which overlooks the chedi, as the rooms on the other side sits directly above a school otherwise you'll be woken by the screaming chorus of children. Rooms have clean baths and beds, and a fridge. Has a restaurant and lift. The reception staff have limited English. From 300 baht a night.  
• The Royal Gems Golf Resort , ☏ +66 2 4298066 . One of the best courses in South East Asia. The estate consists of 250 plots with houses, condos and a hotel. Also a business centre and banquet hall. From 2,000 baht .  
• Whale Hotel , Rajivithi Rd. Has an attached restaurant and nightclub. It is the best situated hotel to visit Silpakorn University and Sanam Chan Palace grounds, although it is a bit far from the chedi. The most expensive hotel in town.

Go next [ edit ]

• Damnoen Saduak — the best-known floating market in Thailand. From Nakhon Pathom, taking bus No 78. from the Bus Stop in front of Police Station (Kwaa-Pra Road). It would take about 1 hour to get there. Buses come every 30 mins. The first bus comes approximately 06:30. The best time to catch the bus is around 07:30-08:00, otherwise the tour buses from Bangkok will get there first and it will be too touristy. The market really starts around 08:00 and closes around 11:30.
• Kanchanaburi — site of the Bridge over the River Kwai and the start of the Death Railway. Buses from Nakhon Pathom to Kanchanaburi pickup at the roadside bus stop on Phet Kasem Road opposite Big C Supermarket, located in the south of the city. Phet Kasem Road is more like a highway, and there is a barrier dividing traffic with no crosswalk, so make sure your taxi drops you at the bus stop and not Big C Supermarket. Bus tickets to Kanchanaburi cost 80 baht, which you can purchase at the bus stop from the ticket teller. There are two trains per day from Nakhon Pathom to Kanchanaburi; one departs in the morning and one at 3:30 pm. (August 2023)

There’s an old legend that says the Gulf of Thailand once extended further north, and the city of Nakhon Pathom was a bustling harbour on the Gulf.

While there’s some doubt about the legend, there’s no doubt the city has been a centre of Buddhist learning for well over a thousand years. Nakhon Pathom’s pride and joy, the Phra Pathom Chedi, bares testament to this.

The city revolves around the Chedi—said to be the tallest Buddhist temple anywhere in the world. The chedi’s extensive outer grounds are a popular place for the locals to eat, chat and lay about and while Nakhon Pathom is not so much a place travellers come of itself, (most visitors are package tourists making a side-trip form the nearby Damnoen Saduak Floating Market) there is a trickle of travellers who do make it here.

The Phra Pathom Chedi Fair, running for ten days at the end of November, is the biggest party Nakhon Pathom puts on. Hundreds of food and amusement stalls set up within the Chedi’s outer gates and revellers and pilgrims come in their thousands to shop, play and pay homage to the monument.

Visitors can walk pretty much anywhere about town, and there are tuk tuks and samlors available for those who need them. It’s difficult to get lost when walking around as wherever you are you always have the towering Chedi to use as a point-of-reference.

Orientation There is a municipal office on the east side of the Chedi that is supposed to offer tourist information, but you’re better off asking at one of the hotels.

Nakhon Pathom

Nakhon Pathom  is one of the oldest cities in Thailand, located in  Central Thailand , just 50 km west of  Bangkok . Nakhon Pathom is famous for its giant  Phra Pathom Chedi  which is one of the tallest of the world.

Phra Pathom Chedi

The most famous landmark of Nakhon Pathom that dominates the town center is Phra Pathom Chedi , is the biggest chedi in Thailand and one of the tallest stupas in the world. The chedi is located in the premises of the royal Wat Phra Pathom Chedi temple. 

The new 120.5 meters high bell-shaped chedi was built to cover the old chedi. There’s a Buddha’s relic enshrined inside of it. The main Buddha image of the temple is standing Buddha called Phra Ruang Rodjanarith.

Sanam Chandra Palace

Another famous attraction of Nakhon Pathom is  Sanam Chandra Palace . The palace complex is located about 2 kilometres west of Phra Pathom Chedi. Sanam Chandra Palace covers an area of about 355 acres. There’s a big court in the middle of the palace complex that is surrounded by roads and water canals. There are a number of beautiful buildings located in Sanam Chan Palace complex.

Talad Bon - Talad Lang

Fresh markets of Nakhon Pathom locally known as Talad Bon – Talad Lang are located on two opposite sides of front road to the north of Phra Pathom Chedi. These markets are the old fresh markets that are serving Nakhon Pathom’s community for 120 years. You can find many local delicacies at this market.

The names of the markets Talad Bon – Talad Lang were derived from spacious market that can be separated into 2 markets by Soi Klang (Middle road). The right side of the road has been called “Talad Bon” or Up the Road Market, while the left side is called “Talad Lang” or Down the Road Market.

You can reach Nakhon Pathom by train or  by bus . 

Train to Nakhon Pathom

Taking southern line train from  Hua Lamphong Railway Station to Nakhon Pathom can be the easies t and cheapest option for reaching Nakhon Pathom from Bangkok . There are several daily trains going from Thonburi Railway Station to Nakhon Pathom too.

You can just make a half-day stopover here and then continue your journey to Kanchanaburi ,  Hua Hin  or further down south to Surat Thani and other destinations in  Southern Thailand .

Depending on the type of train, the trip from Bangkok to Nakhon Pathom takes around 1 to 1,5 hour. If you'll choose 3rd class seats on ordinary train, your trip from  Hua Lamphong Railway Station  to Nakhon Pathom will cost you as low as 14 baht per person.

Buses to Nakhon Pathom

Buses to Nakhon Pathom leave Bangkok Southern (Sai Tai Mai) Bus Terminal every 10 to 15 minutes. It takes take about one hour to get there depending on traffic. 

There are also minivans from Bangkok to Nakhon Pathom leaving from  Mochit Van Terminal .

Nakhon Pathom lies about 56 kilometers west of Bangkok. It sits on the broad flat plain of the Chaophraya Basin. According to legend, the area was once a coastal region when it was first settled around 1,600 years ago, but sedimentation has since moved the coastline almost 50 kilometers away.

The two main sights of interest in the city are the Phra Pathom Chedi and Sanam Chan Palace, both of which are within easy walking distance. With only the two main sights, this is a relatively easy day trip, but with limited transportation options it can still be a long day. This day trip isn't for everyone. While the Pathom Chedi is impressive in size, it doesn't look ancient. The palace is interesting for its "foreigness" and has only a few Thai touches, albeit quite exquisite ones.

Nakhon Pathom Travel Logistics

The easiest way to get to Nakohn Pathom is by train. Trains leave from both the main Hua Lamphong station as well as the Thonburi Station. Unless you're staying on the river, the Hua Lamphong station is easier to get to. All trains on the Southern Line from Hua Lamphong stop in Nakhon Pathom. The best option is the Number 261 train leaving Hua Lamphong at 9:20 am for Hua Hin. There are only two or three trains a day from Thonburi, which have Kanchanaburi as their final destination. The fare to/from Nakhon Pathom is around 14 Baht (0.36 USD). The one drawback to trains is that the options for returning to Bangkok are somewhat limited. The Number 262 train to Hua Lamphong departs Nakhon Pathom at 5:00 pm. There's a slightly earlier train to Thonburi. Check Seat 61 or the State Railway of Thailand sites for current schedule.

Buses are another option. There are frequent buses between Bangkok and Nakhon Pathom, but most of them leave from the Southern Bus Terminal or other parts of the Thonburi area, far away from most of the major hotels and trains. A bus might be a reasonable option for getting back to Bangkok if you are in a hurry to return.

Nakhon Pathom Walking Route

If you arrive by train, you should catch sight of the giant Phra Pathom Chedi as soon as you step outside the train station. Walk down the brick paved road, crossing the canal, until you reach the big Buddhist monument. There's a ticket booth near the base of the stairs that lead up to the open air north chapel holding a highly revered standing Buddha image. I suggest turning left to make your way around the base of the stupa.

At the next access stairway you come to, on the east side of the platform, there's a small museum on the middle platform. After you visit the museum and see the rest of the chedi , exit the compound via the west gate. Walking down the road leading away from the gate (Ratchadamnoen Road), you will come to a traffic circle with a fountain in the middle spinning a big marble ball. At the traffic circle, veer left and take the road that follows the canal, keeping the water on your right (see map). The entry gate to Sanam Chang Palace is a short way down the road.

A visit to the palace will probably take you two to three hours. When finished you can retrace the route back to the train station. If time permits, you may wish to have a look into the fresh markets between the Phra Pathom Chedi and the canal.

Nakhon Pathom is a typical central Thai city, with Phra Pathom Chedi as a visible link to its claim as the country's oldest settlement. The town's name, which derives from the Pali 'Nagara Pathama' meaning 'First City' in Sanskrit, appears to lend some legitimacy to this boast. 1. Phra Pathom Chedi

Known as the "holiest and first among chedis," Phra Pathom Chedi is the single most important attraction in this ancient enclave. At 118 meters, (127 meters including the terraces), it is the tallest Buddhist monument in the world, standing higher even than the famous Shwedagon Pagoda in Yangon, Burma.

The legend of the chedi is a tragic one: It's said that an astrologer told the ancient King Phya Kong that one day his son would kill him. The king sent his son to live in the forest, where a woman found him and raised him. As a young man, the son, called Phya Pan, entered the service of the King of Ratchaburi, who was a vassal of the king of the neighboring kingdom Nakhon Chaisi.

Phya Pan's great wisdom and prudence brought him to the attention of the king, who adopted him. Phya Pan persuaded him to wage war against his feudal lord and, during the ensuing battle, killed his own father. After the victory, he followed local custom by marrying the queen, his mother, but then learned the story of his origins. The dagoba (tomb) he built as an act of atonement was the predecessor of the Phra Pathom Chedi and is today concealed within the larger structure. The great chedi stands on a circular terrace in the middle of a square park, surrounded by a latticework wall, with the main entrance on the north side. The bot, one of the buildings on the terrace, holds a Buddha made of clear quartzite and overlaid with lacquer and gold leaf. This Dvaravati-style figure shows the Buddha seated in the European pose, "the Buddha of the future."

The four wiharns consist of an open lobby and an inner room. A bronze statue of a standing Buddha in the Sukhothai style, known as Phra Ruang Rojanarit, stands in the lobby of the northern wiharn and is a highly revered piece. An inscription on the wall of the wiharn says that the ashes of King Mongkut are interred in the plinth.

2. Phra Pathom Chedi - Museum

The old temple museum, containing Mon stucco and stone sculptures, is in the wiharn near the East entrance. The main building of the museum dates back to 1979 and is by the South steps. Here, you'll see stone tablets from Nakhon Pathom's earliest days, as well as coins, statues of Buddha, and everyday objects from Thailand's ancient past. There are also a number of stone and terra-cotta sculptures and a bas-relief of the Buddha preaching to his first disciples, as well as items showcasing Nakhon Pathom's history and development through the decades.

3. Phra Pathom Chedi Festival

Every year pilgrims from all over Thailand flock to Nakhon Pathom's Grand Temple festival in November. The chedi itself is lit up with fairy lights while classical dance drama, shadow plays, and other entertainments take place on the terraces. The great square at its foot is turned into an amusement park.

4. Sanam Chan Palace

In 1910, before he became king, Rama VI built the Sanam Chan Palace in the northwest of the town. The massive complex has some interesting buildings in a mixture of Thai and European styles. There are a number of ornate halls that were used as theaters and meeting rooms, as well as the Phiman Pathom Hall, where Rama VI is said to have seen a miraculous vision of Phra Pathom Chedi.

In the audience chamber, a small shrine contains a statue of the Hindu god Ganesha, with the head of an elephant and a human body with many arms. The curious statue of a dog in front of the Chali Mongkol Asana, as the building is called, is probably meant to be Ya Le—the favorite dog of King Rama IV.

These buildings now house provincial government offices but still provide an interesting look into the ancient society that once existed in this unique part of Thailand.

5. Wat Bang Phra

While the true origins of this temple are unknown, archeologists believe it dates back to the late 18th century. Today, monks practice here the art of giving sak yant tattoos, a traditional art form in which they use a long stick to tattoo a blessing onto the back.

Tourists can visit and get a tattoo, though the monk chooses which to use. These are meant to protect the bearer from evil, and bring them strength and luck.

Wat Bang Phra is the site of the annual Sak Yant Festival, when over 10,000 people flock to Nakhon Pathom to practice and honor this ancient tattoo art form. Many become "possessed" during the festival, acting out the behaviors of animal gods or behaving erratically as they claim to be moved by spirits.

6. Wat Phra Ngam

Wat Phra Ngam is known as the "temple of magnificent Buddha images," a site where a number of significant historical artifacts were excavated. Finds included sandstone Buddha images, the Sema Dhama Chakra (a Buddhist Wheel of Virtue that marked the boundaries of the temple and sacred areas), statues of crouching deer, and both bronze and earthen Buddha images.

The temple was built during the reign of King Rama V, in the late 1800s. Many of the relics and artifacts excavated here are on display at the National Museum in Bangkok.

7. Rose Garden Thai Village

East and West meet here, where guests can enjoy the many Italian-style gardens in a uniquely Thai setting and relax after visiting some of the ancient sites of Nakhon Pathom.

This massive green space of 55 acres is home to beautiful floral displays, as well as a handicraft market, a mini floating market, and an outdoor food court offering Thai specialties and snacks. There are also cultural shows and ceremonies, including traditional Thai folk dancing and muay Thai displays. Elephant shows and rides are also offered here—something to keep in mind if you don't approve of elephants in captivity.

If you want to spend the night here and explore in the early morning, before the heat of the day rolls around, there's also a riverside hotel with its own restaurant on site.

8. Jesada Technik Museum

This massive collection of vintage cars and motorcycles belongs to a Thai businessman who in 2007 decided to set up his own museum. More than 500 vehicles now occupy a large hangar in Nakhon Pathom in an eclectic exhibit that features many unusual and even quirky examples of everyday transportation.

There are only a few signs here and not much logical order—chronological or otherwise—to the parking of the vehicles. Instead, the collection is here to be admired, explored, and, often enough, obsessed over.

The museum has a significant number of three-wheel cars that look very similar to modern-day tuk-tuks (Thai motorcycle taxis) but were created by well-known brands such as Lambretta and Daihatsu.

Old American "muscle" cars do have their own dedicated section—and the collection includes beautiful elongated Checkers, 1950s sports cars, and even NYC yellow taxis. There's also a DeLorean (the famous "Back to the Future" car) and buses, a micro BMW Isetta and other cars with no side doors (instead, the entire front of the car opens up to allow access), tractors, and single-person helicopters here.

9. Wat Lam Phaya Floating Market

Located in front of the Lam Phaya temple, this floating market is less commercial than the ones you'll find in Bangkok. Rather than being an artificial set up to attract tourists, this is an authentic local market where people come to sell hand-made products, fruits, and even clothes. Many boat sellers also offer homemade food, including traditional dishes such as chicken Biryani and Thai vermicelli.

The floating market also includes a small museum set in a teak building. Here, visitors can see agriculture tools, pottery, and everyday life items that have shaped the life of the locals.

10. Woodland Muangmai

It's hard to describe Woodland Muangmai, an art village meets fantasy land where several legends and stories known as "Tales of the Wood" are told through hand-sculpted wood. The carvings here are actually all unrelated and come from a private collection encompassing carvings that go as far back as 200 years—but they have been arranged and divided into zones that together tell a story.

Visitors can enter the Abyss Room, the Buddha Room, the Dragon Cave room, and more—spaces where special effects, lights, and sound will guide them and explain the hundreds of carvings around.

One of those places you have to see to believe, Woodland Muangmai offers a wonderful insight into Southeast Asian wooden craftsmanship, and it's a very unique destination when you want to see something different.

Nakhon Pathom makes for a great day trip from Bangkok, so many visitors who travel here don't need to stay overnight. If you want to truly explore, take some photos, and perhaps visit more than just the main spots, booking a room for the night is a great idea.

Luxury Hotels

You won't find any luxury resorts in Nakhon Pathom, but this traditional area still has some nice options in the form of four-star hotels with great amenities. The Mida Grande Hotel Dhavaravati Nakhon Pathom tops the list, with a great location that puts you near all major tourist attractions in modern rooms with air-conditioning, a spa, and a fantastic pool.

Mid-Range Hotels

Nakhon Pathom has plenty of options in this category – many of them with lots of amenities you would normally only expect from higher-end accommodations. The Busaya Resort , for example, has free bikes that guests can borrow to tour the countryside, rooms with their own seating areas, a private garden, and a playground. The Hidden Holiday House inn , on the other hand, offers traditional Thai accommodations with a beautiful location on the river and simple but elegant rooms with bathtubs. Guided bike tours to the floating market are available.

Budget Hotels

Xen Hotel Nakhon Pathom is a favorite choice for travelers on a budget, as it sits right in the heart of town and within walking distance of everything you might need during your visit. Rooms are spacious and modern and come equipped with AC; there's also a restaurant on-site.

Opening hours: 18:00 to 23:00. 

Many hawker stalls offering a variety of cheap food. 

Flying Ice Cream

Ice cream excellent Khao Lam (ข้าวหลาม) (sticky rice and coconut milk cooked in bamboo). The sweet pomelo (ส้มโอหวาน) and fragrant coconut juice (มะพร้าวน้ำหอม) are also notable.

Open daily until midnight or 01:00. Clean and cheap with English menu. 

Nice and simple Thai dishes, air conditioning

BKS public buses (lines 83 and 997) leave from Bangkok's Southern Bus Terminal. The trip costs 40 baht in first class and takes about an hour in good traffic. Buses go every 10 minutes from 4:10AM until 9:30PM. Update: As of August 2015 line 83 takes another route and starts from a bus stop just west of Bang Wa BTS Station (fare 45 baht). The route is even more prone for traffic jams due to MRT construction ongoing. No change for line 997.

There are also 2nd class buses to Kanchanaburi every 15-30 minutes.

In addition there is a non-stop minibus service between Bangkok's Victory Monument and the centre of the city where all the buses stop, about 100 metres from the railway station. The Victory Monument is far more convenient than the Southern Bus Terminal, and is on the skytrain light rail system. Just get off the BTS station from Exit No. 2 and make a U-turn immediately. The minibus station is at a car way next to Century Movie Plaza. It takes 65 Baht from Bangkok to Nakhon Pathom with minibus route 997. Also the minibus route 81 toward Kanchanaburi stops in front of Silpakorn University as well.

The State Railway of Thailand operates daily trains to Nakhon Pathom. Trains from Bangkok's Thonburi Train Station to Kanchanaburi/Nam Tok stop at Nakhon Pathom along the way.

From Bangkok, driving on the old route of Petchakasem Road (Highway No.4) passing Aom Noi, Aom Yai, Sam Phran to Nakhon Pathom or driving on a new route from Bangkok, passing Buddhamonthon, Nakhon Chaisi to Nakhon Pathom. The new route is Highway No. 338 and originates on Pinklao Road. The elevated part from Pin Klao Bridge to Buddhamonthon 2 Road is toll free and cuts down travel time considerably.

This city is fairly large. You can walk around the centre, the markets, and to the Chedi easily enough. There is transport in the shape of motorcycle taxis, where you ask the fare first. Also about three tuktuks were noticed, and two of these were at the Chedi.

In a new move to attract travelers during peak season, Thailand is doing away with the requirement of needing vaccination certificates or Covid-19 negative results in the case of unvaccinated passengers. Additionally, those infected with Covid-19, but have mild symptoms don’t need to isolate from next month. The same applies to those who test positive but display no symptoms.

Public Health Minister Anutin Charnvirakul announced these changes on Thursday after the National Communicable Diseases Committee (NCDC) had a meeting on Wednesday.

Instead of isolating those who have contracted the disease would be required to wear a mask, socially distance themselves from others and wash their hands frequently for the first five days. They also need to stay away from those who are immunocompromised and vulnerable.

Dr. Sophon Iamsirithaworn, deputy director-general of the Department of Disease Control, informed that since the present Covid-19 mutation doesn’t cause serious symptoms in most people, disease control measures can be relaxed.

National Security Council secretary-general Supoj Malaniyom added that the new measures are being put in place to help improve the economic conditions of the country.

“The primary aim will be to ensure the economy is back on track so people could earn their livelihoods once more,” he said.

Rich history and home of the oldest Buddhist structure of Thailand

Nakhon Pathom is a province in Central Thailand , some fifty kilometers North West of Bangkok. The province's capital city, also called Nakhon Pathom, is one of the oldest cities of Thailand. The city's name in ancient Pali language means “first city”.

Dvaravati era

The city flourished during the Dvaravati era, that existed between the 6 th and 13 th century. During this time, Nakhon Pathom was located on the sea and through ships from foreign nations it was culturally influenced by a number of countries including India.

When the local river changed its flow local population moved further East to the town of Nakhon Chai Si and Nakhon Pathom town was left deserted. Only after the Phra Pathom chedi was restored by King Mongkut (Rama IV), the city became inhabited once again.

Fruit orchards

Agriculture still plays an important role in this province. It is especially known for its many fruit orchards, of which pomelo is the most famous.

The province’s main attraction and a very highly revered place for Buddhists is the Phra Pathom chedi , a massive 120 meters high chedi dating back some 2300 years. It is the largest Buddhist chedi in the world and probably the oldest Buddhist structure in the country. The Phra Pathom Chedi National Museum displays artifacts from the Dvaravati era dug out in the area, such as Buddha images, stuccos and stone carvings.

Sanam Chandra Palace

Just two kilometers from the chedi is the very elegant Sanam Chandra Palace . The Palace covering an area of more than 350 acres was built at the beginning of the 20 th century by King Rama VI shows a mix of Thai and European architectural styles. The main building looks like an English or French castle, while a number of other buildings are built in typical Thai style.

Phutthamonthon Buddhist park

Phutthamonthon is a large park in the Eastern part of Nakhon Pathom province. The park was created in 1957 (Buddhist year 2500) to celebrate the birth of the Buddha 2500 years before.

The centre piece of the park is a huge bronze walking Buddha image, that measures almost 16 meters high. Around the image are four sites dedicated to four key events in the life of the Buddha, namely birth, first sermon, reaching enlightenment and passing into final Nirvana.

In the viharn you will find a huge number of marble stones (1418) inscribed with Buddhist scriptures. The walls of the viharn are decorated with beautiful detailed mural paintings. Although the murals are new, they were made based on the old Thai style murals found in many of the old temples around Thailand.

Boat trip on the khlongs

Several sight seeing trips on the khlongs (canals) of Nakhon Pathom can be made, where you can see and visit orchid farms and fruit orchards. Trips can be made at several locations including along the Nakhon Chai Si river and along Khlong Maha Sawat.

Thai Human Imagery Museum

To learn something about Thai culture and history, visit the Thai Human Imagery Museum in the town of Nakhon Chai Si. The museum displays life size wax sculptures of people who played an important role in Thai history. Among others there are sections for Great Buddhist monks and all the former Kings of the currently ruling Chakri dynasty Rama I through Rama VIII. Other sections deal with aspects of Thai culture and traditions.

Getting to Nakhon Pathom

Due to its proximity to the capital, Nakhon Pathom is easily and quickly reached.

Private taxi The easiest and most comfortable way is to take a private taxi from Bangkok. Make sure the driver uses the meter.

Train The Southern Line operated by the State Railway of Thailand has a stop at Nakhon Pathom town. It takes around one and a half hour from Bangkok’s Hua Lamphong station to get there.

Bus Air conditioned buses leaving from Bangkok’s Southern bus terminal take around an hour to get to Nakhon Pathom town. The bus terminal is located on Borommaratchachonnani Road in Bangkok Noi, West of the Chao Phraya river. Easier to get to from central Bangkok is the Victory Monument, from where you can take a van to Nakhon Pathom.

Central Pattana Plc (CPN), an SET-listed retail and real estate developer, has invested 8.2 billion baht in Central Nakhon Pathom, the first mixed-use project in the city.

Nattakit Tangpoonsinthana, chief marketing officer at CPN, said Nakhon Pathom has strong economic potential.

The city's gross provincial product stands at 366 billion baht, and it has been increasing every year. It is ranked third in the central region and seventh nationwide, according to 2023 data from the Trade Policy and Strategy Office.

The infrastructure in Nakhon Pathom is also improving.

Salaya in Nakhon Pathom is scheduled to be a stop on the second phase of the SRT Light Red Line, a suburban railway system serving the greater Bangkok Metropolitan region.

Moreover, the government has initiated a Bang Yai-Nakhon Pathom-Kanchanaburi motorway (M81), with the aim of connecting Bangkok with the western region.

M81 is under construction and expected to be fully open by 2025.

This will make the city an economic gateway to the west, supporting the purchasing power of its residents and expanding into new catchment areas in Ratchaburi and Kanchanaburi.

"The Bangkok Metropolitan region is growing and Nakhon Pathom is one of the gateways to the western and southern parts of Thailand. The project can attract locals living in the vicinity as well as tourists who are heading to Cha-am or Hua Hin," Mr Nattakit said.

Mr Nattakit said that more than 1 million residents in the catchment area -- including nearby Kanchanaburi and Ratchaburi -- would drive the opening of Central Nakhon Pathom.

Moreover, Nakhon Pathom is home to several leading universities including Silpakorn University (Sanam Chandra Palace Campus), Kasetsart University (Kamphaeng Saen Campus), and Mahidol University, which "serves as a hub for the new generation".

"Nakhon Pathom is also a city of cultural tourism, featuring famous tourist attractions such as Phra Pathom Chedi, the largest pagoda in Thailand," Mr Nattakit said.

Mr Nattakit said CPN is announcing the opening of its 42nd shopping centre, Central Nakhon Pathom, with an investment worth 8.2 billion baht.

The project covers over 100 rai of land with a gross building area of 133,000 square metres.

It features a shopping centre, hotel, Escent condominiums, an urban park, and a single-detached house project called Baan Nirati.

Mr Nattakit noted that the new Central Nakhon Pathom would not affect the performance of Central Salaya, which is also located in the same province, due to different customer segments.

Even though Thailand's household debt-to-GDP ratio stood at 90.9% in the third quarter of 2023, which weakened the purchasing power of consumers, according to the National Economic and Social Development Council, CPN is confident it will not affect foot traffic at the new shopping centre as the local economy has high potential.

"I think the purchasing power of the customers from the middle- to upper-income segment still show positive signs," Mr Nattakit said.

The company aims to attract 25,000-30,000 visitors daily and expects the whole project to be completed within the next five years.
