Spring comes from early March to late May. Following a cold winter, the weather in Sapa gets warmer and more pleasant. While trekking in the mountains with ideal temperatures – neither too hot nor too cold, you also can take in breathtaking natural beauty, enjoy the blue sky and have a great opportunity to take many beautiful pictures.

In addition to beautiful weather and lush green landscapes, this is also the peach blossom season. You can see many white and pink flowers in bloom all across the road, the field, and the garden when visiting Sapa during this time.

Summer in Sapa – From June to August

June, July, and August are summer months and can be extremely hot. Also, it can rain heavily almost every day. An hour-long downpour is so intense that it swiftly converts roads and walkways into muddy trails. Heat and rain make trekking in Sapa not very pleasant.

That being said, the summer months bring with them an abundance of greenery, including rice fields. Large volumes of water cascading down the mountains make Sapa’s waterfalls particularly stunning during and right after the rainy season. Thus, you may still take in the breathtaking surroundings when traveling in the summer.

Even though the summer is not the best time to visit Sapa, there are some days when the town grows busier, especially on weekends. Many Vietnamese choose to travel to Sapa during the summer period as their children are off from school.

Fall in Sapa – From September to November

September brings with it a decreasing amount of rain, making trekking and traveling easier and more enjoyable. The summer heat eventually passes, even if it is still rather warm during the day.

The months of September and October also coincide with the harvest season. At this time of year, Sapa’s rice fields are at their most picturesque. The view is simply magnificent, with golden rice fields winding across the mountains like golden ribbons. This makes fall the best time to visit Sapa.

The ideal trekking weather returns around the end of October and November as the days become milder and the nights become colder. In addition, the road is easier and safer for a motorbike tour.

Winter in Sapa – From December to February

Winter begins in November and lasts until the end of February as the days get progressively colder.

While January and December are the coldest months of the year, November is still a lovely time of year to visit Sapa. It could even snow during this time of year, and the temperature could drop below freezing. This is not the ideal time of year to trek Sapa because of the cold weather and deserted rice fields. If you plan to go trekking, remember to bring suitable clothing. You also should keep in mind that not all homestays in Sapa, especially the more basic ones, have good heating systems, so it can get very cold.

In the event that it doesn’t snow, there’s still a potential of rain, which might make the trekking path muddy and challenging to navigate. There’s another difference: winter brings thick fog, which is why the mountains are blanketed in clouds. It can create some stunning landscapes, but may obstruct your view of the distinctive surroundings. The weather slowly clears up and the temperature rises somewhat starting in February.

Why Sapa is Worth Visiting – Best Things to Do in Sapa

To give you the super short answer, yes – Sapa is 100% worth visiting and was actually my favorite part of my 1-month trip to Vietnam (and yes I did the Ha Giang Loop!) Sapa still topped the charts, though motorbiking in northern Vietnam was truly fantastic.

Nature lovers and outdoor enthusiasts will find Sapa is worth visiting because there are loads of interesting activities to do.

Here are some of the top things to do in Sapa, and what makes this beautiful region a must-do on your Vietnam itinerary.

1. Go Trekking

Going on an overnight trek and staying in a homestay a traditional village is one of the main reasons why travelers go out of their way to visit Sapa. And let me tell you, it is truly amazing!

Expert hikers and adventure travelers can take trekking and planning homestays into their own hands – which is very easy to do upon arrival to Sapa town. You’ll have loads of options. This is best option for anyone staying around 3 days.

Planners or anyone short on time (like me) should book a tour in advance. Since I only had 2 days in Sapa, I booked this tour here and would highly recommend it.

2. Ride the Cable Car to Fansipan

On a clear day, see spectacular views from one of the highest mountains in Southeast Asia – Fansipan Mountain.

This activity is quite pricey, roundtrip cable car tickets are around 800,000 VND (34 USD) so check the weather before booking, otherwise the view may not be worth the cost.

3. Visit Sapa Town

Sapa Town may seem like a stark difference from its serene outskirts. The town is a major tourist hub, but it’s nice to walk around and visit some shops and see the evening festivities in the main square.

4. Visit the Waterfalls

While there are many waterfalls in Sapa and the surrounding area, Silver Waterfall and Love Waterfall are the two most popular. You can arrange transport or rent a motorbike to get to the falls.

5. Cat Cat Village

If you’ve already done a Sapa trek, you can skip Cat Cat if you’ve had your dose of a Sapa authentic village experience. Cat Cat is a great option if you are staying in Sapa Town and aren’t trekking as it’s only a 15-minute walk and will give you a small taste of what the Sapa villages are like.

Cat Cat is very touristy, so take it with a grain of salt and prepare to be surrounded by locals selling their goods!

6. Visit the Sapa Museum (closed often, check before)

If you’re especially interested in the history and traditions of Sapa tribes, visit the Sapa Museum. Although this museum tends to operate on its own terms, so consider calling before going.

7. Try Hot Pot

Salmon Hot Pot is one of the most known meals to have in Sapa. Try some out at Viet Deli or Moment Romantic Restaurant Sapa.

Weather in Sapa.. It can be an issue.

Your trip to Sapa, and how much you’ll enjoy it, may, unfortunately, be completely dependent on the weather.

This isn’t exactly helpful information, because when I was in Hanoi and looking at the weather in Sapa, it said it would rain every day – and it barely rained at all. I would have been so upset if I didn’t plan my trip to Sapa based on this incredibly inaccurate weather forecast.

Much like anything in Vietnam, it’s a gamble. But let me help you narrow down your options.

Northern Vietnam’s rainy season is from mid-May to mid-September. If you’re traveling to Vietnam during this time, I would consider not booking a Sapa trek. If it’s pouring down rain the entire trek, you’re simply just not going to enjoy it.

The best time to visit Sapa is March-May and September-November.

Alternatively, you could book a trip to Sapa town, assess the weather situation, and book a trek for the next day. That’s the great thing about Vietnam is you can (almost) travel the entire country booking things only a day or two in advance.

Sapa town is full of nice restaurants, hotels, shopping, and local events. Worst case scenario you get there and won’t get to trek but will get to see the lovely town.

Personally, I took an overnight sleeper bus and it was very nice. Pay close attention as the trains to Sapa take longer and I’ve heard are not as nice as the buses!

While the buses can range dramatically, I got one that was so awesome – just look at it!

Many travelers also book a complete guided tour from Hanoi with all transportation included (this is what I did!)

What to Pack for Sapa Trekking

Some of the trekking tours aren’t totally clear about what you actually need for trekking in Sapa. Lots of people were either not prepared or over-prepared on my trek.

1. Bug Spray

Hands down the number one thing you will need is bug spray! You will be trekking deep in the rice fields and forests, those mosquitos will eat you alive!

2. Good tennis shoes/ trekking shoes

My asics tennis shoes barely got me by on this trek, and I wasn’t alone! As touristy as Sapa treks can be, they are actually quite tough. I was slipping and sliding left and right. I was kicking myself for not bringing a better pair of hiking shoes.

3. Small Backpack

Do NOT bring your suitcase or big backpacking bag on your Sapa trek. You’ll need to leave most of your luggage behind at your accommodation and just bring a small backpack filled with your essentials for your Sapa trek.

4. Sunscreen

If you’re trekking in sunny weather, you’ll want to pack sunscreen to protect your skin.

Everything on Sapa treks is cash only, so be sure to bring cash – especially small bills for water and snacks. Most restaurants and accommodations in Sapa Town accept cards, but once you leave the town you are in cash-only territory.

6. Rain Jacket & Protection

As I’ve mentioned – rain in SaPa can be tricky! You’ll want to bring a rain jacket & a trash bag or plastic protection to put over your bag.

7. Baby Wipes

The trek can be pretty muddy or you might be one of the (many) unlucky ones who slide in Buffalo poop! Having a pack of baby wipes will keep you fresh throughout your hike.

8. Swimsuit

Throughout your hike, you may find a few rivers to take a dip in, so you’ll want to pack your swimsuit,

9. Basic Essentials

However long your hike is, you’ll want to pack just the very basics you’ll need for your trek and your overnight homestays.

Sapa town stands at the head of a deep valley of magnificent rice terraces that are still farmed today as they have been for centuries. Backdrops don’t get much more spectacular. Enticing ribbons of road lead the eye down to the valley floor, white-water rivers rush among rice fields, and lush green mountains stretch into the distance as far as the eye can see. The highest peak in the region, Mount Fansipan, crowns the ragged ridge line high above town.

Top things to do in Sapa

Summit Mount Fansipan

A 6-kilometre cable car journey will whisk you 3,143m to the summit of Mount Fansipan in just 15 minutes. Wander the pagoda complex before climbing the last few steps to the summit. The views from the ‘Roof of Indochina’ are unmatched.

Visit an ethnic minority market

Every Sunday the Bac Ha market bursts into life, as hundreds of traders from the Dzao, Han, Xa Fang, Tay and Thai tribes descend on the market, decked out in traditional garb. Expect a riot of colour and excited haggling.

Go trekking in the hills

Sapa offers some of Vietnam's best trekking, and some villages such as Cat Cat and Ta Phin can be seen without a guide. Book an overnight trek to wander through rice terraces, bathe in waterfalls and experience ethnic culture firsthand.

Mountain biking is a great way to get out and explore lesser-visited corners of Sapa. The annual Vietnam Mountain Marathon attracts some 4000 competitors who run buffalo-beaten trails ranging from 10 to 100 kilometres.

The best time to visit Sapa is in September and October when the rice terraces are at their most splendid; or in April and May when the weather is ideal and skies are clear. For those who don’t mind hot weather, June to August is a fine time to visit. Expect chilly weather from November to March.

Sapa Transport

Overnight trains are the most popular way to reach Sapa via the neighbouring province capital, Lao Cai. Upon arrival, transfer vans finish the journey up the mountains. Alternatively, regular buses and shuttle vans run from Hanoi with a journey time of five to six hours, stopping in the centre of town. As a former hill station, Sapa has plenty of steep roads and pathways. Many visitors get around by foot, or by taxi. Adventure-seekers can rent mountain bikes to explore the trails along the valley.

During these periods, the weather is relatively stable, with sunny days and cool nights. The early part of this timeframe is spring, characterized by comfortable weather, dry conditions, and plenty of sunlight. April in Sapa showcases beautiful weather with more sunlight, low humidity, and reasonable rainfall. Since the weather can sometimes change dramatically during the day, travelers are rewarded with an extraordinary chance to witness all four seasons throughout the day.

Hot and scorching weather, typical summer elements seen in other parts of Vietnam, are entirely absent in Sapa during the extended summer from June to August. Sapa highlights a consistently cool summer with daily temperatures ranging from 20 to 25°C, and nighttime temperatures hovering around 15°C. However, this is also the rainy season in Sapa, so travelers may not enjoy the most favorable conditions for strolling around this lovely town. The highest rainfall of 480 mm is recorded in July. The weather in Sapa

Sapa has a temperate climate, so it is cold all year, with the average temperature fluctuating around 15ºC.

The weather in Sapa in summer is not nearly as hot. The daytime temperature usually fluctuates from 20ºC to 25°C, and at night temperature is around 13ºC to 15°C.

Sapa is very cold in the winter, with the temperature dropping to 0°C, so it will offer an opportunity to watch snow if you travel to Sapa in the winter.

The rainy season usually starts from May to October, accounting for nearly 80% of the annual rainfall. You will be more likely to encounter showers in these months of the year.

These are the coldest winter months of the year. The temperature is usually below 10 degrees C. If the whole North comes into a cold spell, then Sapa usually maintains at a temperature of 2 – 5 degrees C.
