U.s. news survey finds cruisers ready to return to the seas.

Both longtime and potential first-time cruisers are booked at a higher rate than pre-pandemic.

Survey: Cruisers Ready to Return to Seas

Travelers are ready to relax and get cruising. A recent U.S. News survey finds that many people expect to be on a cruise in the next year, and the Caribbean is one of the most sought-after cruising regions.

Over the past two years, the coronavirus pandemic has created a challenging travel atmosphere, especially for the cruise industry. Now, as more cruise ships start to sail again, travelers looking for a vacation at sea are given hope and encouragement that a sense of normalcy is returning.

Originally curious about everyday travelers' views on cruise vacations – then further interested in the effects of the coronavirus pandemic on their attitudes toward cruising – U.S. News ran a survey on the travel.usnews.com website from early 2020 through mid-2021 to learn more. We received more than 6,500 responses across four months of data collection in January 2020 (before the COVID-19 pandemic began), August 2020 (mid-COVID-19 pandemic) and June and August 2021 (deep into the COVID-19 pandemic, amid the rise of the Delta variant), from two types of travelers: those who have been on a cruise before, and those who haven't, but might consider a cruise for their next vacation.

Here are some of the noteworthy stats from survey respondents:

  • Optimism runs high: In August 2020, 37% of likely cruisers planned to set sail in the next 12 months. In August 2021, that stat reached 49% – even higher than prior to the pandemic.
  • What's more, a higher percentage of travelers in August 2021 were booked for a future cruise than in January 2020. Roughly 28% of total respondents had a cruise booked in August 2021, compared to about 23% of respondents booked for a cruise in January 2020.
  • Among travelers who have never cruised, about 30% say they're likely to take a future cruise. This has not changed meaningfully through the course of the pandemic. Among travelers who have cruised before, just over 50% say they're likely to take another cruise. This is a modest decline compared to pre-pandemic responses.
  • The percent of people who said they will "never take a cruise" increased throughout the pandemic, but that number recently dropped in August 2021 among those who have not yet been on a cruise. Just 13.5% of those respondents in August 2021 said they would "never take a cruise." Meanwhile, the percentage of people who have cruised before and said they would never take another cruise increased, but only slightly – from 2% in January 2020 to 4.2% in August 2021.
  • Only 12% of respondents said the coronavirus pandemic has turned them off from cruising for good. This percentage is about the same among both past cruisers and those who've never sailed.
  • More than 80% of past cruisers say COVID-19 vaccine requirements are either important or very important, while just 9% are against vaccine policies. Past cruisers care more about vaccine requirements than those who've never cruised, but overall, the majority of both types of respondents (those who have cruised and those who have not) consider vaccine requirements important or very important.
  • People who haven't cruised before are most interested in Caribbean (24.8%) and Alaska (13.4%) sailings, though 21.7% are unsure where they'd like to go. People who have cruised before are two times more likely to select a Europe or Mediterranean itinerary, but they are also highly interested in Caribbean and Alaska sailings, with 26.1% indicating they'd like to cruise to the Caribbean and 12.8% saying Alaska appeals to them.
  • Having the opportunity to see numerous destinations on one vacation is the dominant reason travelers want to cruise. Value for the money, dining options, kids clubs, wearable technology and social atmospheres are some of the other top amenities today's cruisers are seeking.

This data from everyday travelers, some of whom are seasoned cruisers and others who have never been on a cruise, is encouraging. It seems that while the pandemic has certainly wreaked havoc across various areas of the travel industry, it has not dissuaded many people from considering a cruise for their next vacation. This is great news for the cruise industry.

Cruise line stops visits to popular Caribbean resort amid U.S. travel advisory

A major cruise line has suspended ships from going to the Caribbean nation of Haiti because of an increase of violence and unrest in the area.

Royal Caribbean has suspended calls at Labadee “due to the evolving situation in Haiti,” the company said in a prepared statement as reported by Cruiseindustrynews.com.

“We continue to monitor and assess the situation with our Global Security & Intelligence Team,” Royal Caribbean continued. Neither passengers nor crew have faced violence or threats, the company said.

This comes after the State Department urged people to not visit and implemented a Travel Advisory earlier this month. The U.S. Embassy in Port-au-Prince told American tourists to “not travel to Haiti” in a press release issued March 10 .

“The current security situation in Haiti is unpredictable and dangerous,” the statement continued. “We are aware that there are few or no commercial options to depart Haiti safely at this time. As they become available, we urge U.S. citizens to take advantage of them.”

A do-not-travel alert for Haiti was issued in July 2023 for what the State Department described as “kidnapping, crime, civil unrest and poor health care infrastructure.”

The Travel Advisory for Haiti is now at Level Four, which discourages any travel to the country.

American travelers in Haiti are advised to avoid crowds, avoid being outside after dark, prepare to shelter in place, keep a low profile and be aware of their surroundings, the U.S. Embassy said.

Several Royal Caribbean ships were set to visit Labadee over the next several days. Instead, those stops will be replaced by a day at sea as well as extra time at a previously scheduled stop in Falmouth, Jamaica.

Other ships will visit Nassau, the Bahamas or Perfect Day at CocoCay, another company-owned location.

More than 33,000 people have fled Haiti’s capital in a span of nearly two weeks as gangs continue to pillage homes and attack state institutions , according to a new report by the U.N.’s International Organization for Migration (IOM).

The majority of those displaced have traveled to Haiti’s southern region, which is generally peaceful compared with Port-au-Prince, which has an estimated population of 3 million, and remains largely paralyzed by gang violence . The airport in Port-au-Prince has also been closed because of the violence.

Scores of people have been killed and some 17,000 people overall have been left homeless since the gang attacks began on Feb. 29, with gunmen targeting police stations and the main international airport that remains closed.

They also stormed Haiti’s two biggest prisons and released more than 4,000 inmates.

More than 90% of those fleeing did so by bus, forced to go through the community of Martissant, which connects Port-au-Prince with Haiti’s southern region, and is controlled by warring gangs that have killed dozens of civilians in the area.

IOM noted that Haiti’s southern region is already home to another 116,000 people who fled gang violence in previous months, and that rural provinces do not have the infrastructure or resources “to cope with these massive displacement flows coming from the capital.”

The majority of new arrivals have settled in cities like Les Cayes, Jérémie and Léogâne, with more than half of Haitians interviewed saying they chose to relocate to the south because they’re originally from there. Nearly all said they planned to stay with family.

More than 70% of people who fled Port-au-Prince between March 8-20 said gang violence had already left them homeless and that they had been living with relatives or in crowded, makeshift shelters. More people are expected to leave the capital in upcoming days and weeks as gang violence continues unabated.

Disney Cruise Line reveals new 'Heroes and Villains' themed cruise ship coming in 2025

us news cruises

Disney Cruise Line will add another new ship in 2025.

The line will take delivery of the Disney Destiny next year, the brand announced Wednesday.

The vessel will have a “Heroes and Villains” design theme, with the cruise line and Walt Disney Imagineering teams drawing inspiration from “the dynamic duality of every great Disney story, where opposing forces of light and dark drive characters to rise to their purpose,” according to a news release .

Onboard experiences will feature characters from stories such as “Hercules, “The Lion King,” and “One Hundred and One Dalmatians,” though the line has not yet shared additional specifics about the amenities or the ship's maiden voyage. An illustration on the bow will show Minnie Mouse "striking a valiant pose in a heroic ensemble, her cape waving majestically in the sea breeze as she boldly leads guests toward their vacation destinies,” the line added.

“The Disney Destiny will celebrate our most legendary Disney stories and characters, bringing them to life in new and exciting ways exclusively for Disney Cruise Line guests,” Sharon Siskie, the line’s senior vice president and general manager, said in the release. “As we continue to expand our fleet, the Disney Destiny will further strengthen our position as a leader in family cruising as we offer even more ways for families to experience Disney magic and world-class service at sea.”

Are cruise drink packages worth it?: Not necessarily

The vessel will be a sister ship to the Disney Wish and the upcoming Disney Treasure, the latter of which will set sail in December. The cruise line will also add another ship, the Disney Adventure , in 2025, which will homeport in Singapore and mark the brand’s first to sail in Southeast Asia.

German Business Sentiment Rises in March, Ifo Says

Reuters

By Maria Martinez

BERLIN (Reuters) -German business morale improved in March and beat expectations, a survey showed on Friday, though probably not enough to prevent Europe's biggest economy from slipping into another recession.

The Ifo institute said its business climate index stood at 87.8 compared with a reading of 86.0 forecast by analysts in a Reuters poll.

"The German economy glimpses light on the horizon," said Ifo president Clemens Fuest.

Companies' expectations turned much less pessimistic in March and assessments of the current business situation also improved, the survey showed.

"The strong gain in the Ifo business climate gives us hope," said Joerg Kraemer, chief economist at Commerzbank.

He said the dampening effect of massive increases in interest rates and energy prices is beginning to fade.

"However, an end to the recession in the summer half-year should not be confused with a genuine upturn," Kraemer warned.

Germany is broadly expected to enter another technical recession in the first quarter of this year, after its economy shrank by 0.3% in the final quarter of last year.

Germany's economic downturn eased slightly in March as business activity in the country’s service sector came close to stabilising, the HCOB German Flash Composite Purchasing Managers' Index(PMI), compiled by S&P Global, showed on Thursday.

"We think the pick-up in March is the beginning of a more sustained rise in both surveys," said Claus Vistesen, chief eurozone economist at Pantheon Macroeconomics, in reference to the PMI and the Ifo survey.

ING's global head of macro Carsten Brzeski cautioned: "Before popping the corks, let's not forget that today's reading is still far lower than levels seen last summer."

Germany's gross domestic product (GDP) shrank by 0.3% in 2023, making it the world's worst performing major economy.

The government expects the economy to grow 0.2% this year as weak global demand, geopolitical uncertainty and persistently high inflation dent hopes for a swift rebound.

"Even if sentiment indicators have improved somewhat, any recovery of the German economy looks set to be weak this year," Brzeski said.

Coming Soon: 2024 Best Senior Living Ratings

U.S. News will share embargoed results with senior living organizations later this month.

Coming Soon: Best Senior Living Ratings

On April 16, U.S. News will publish the 2024 edition of Best Senior Living . These ratings, which will cover more than 3,500 senior living communities across the country, are designed to help seniors and their families choose the best living arrangement for their unique needs. Best Senior Living is a free, web-based decision-support tool created to help consumers who are seeking a senior living community for themselves or a family member. Other such U.S. News consumer tools include Best Nursing Homes and Best Hospitals .

In the coming weeks, U.S. News will share the forthcoming ratings by email with leaders of participating senior living organizations. This information will be confidential and should not be announced to staff, residents, or the public until the ratings are published on the U.S. News website the morning of Tuesday, April 16. The current, 2023 Best Senior Living ratings will remain available on https://health.usnews.com/best-senior-living until the updated ratings are published.

The ratings were determined by extensively surveying residents and family members of senior living communities that agreed to be evaluated. Using data from nearly 400,000 consumer experience surveys, U.S. News evaluated each participating community and determined which met the criteria for Best Independent Living, Best Assisted Living and/or Best Memory Care. Continuing care retirement communities and life plan communities were also considered for recognition among the Best Continuing Care Retirement Communities. Under an agreement with U.S. News, Activated Insights, a customer and employee analytics platform, worked with most participating communities to conduct the surveys and then provided results to U.S. News for statistical analysis. In order to provide flexibility to communities, U.S. News also worked with additional survey vendors, Sensight Surveys, ServiceTrac, and Holleran Consulting, to administer a comparable survey to other communities.

For most communities, U.S. News combined data from the two most recent customer surveys in order to maximize the number of consumer voices factored into the ratings; only communities that participated for the first time this year or had few survey respondents last year were evaluated exclusively on the most recent survey. Additional communities are profiled on the U.S. News website but are not rated because they didn’t participate in the latest survey.

The draft of this year's detailed methodology report contains more information on how the 2024 U.S. News Best Senior Living ratings were determined.

To learn more about the Best Senior Living methodology and online experience, tune in for the complimentary live webinar that will be hosted by U.S. News on May 9, 2024.

Organizational leaders who have questions or constructive feedback, or who seek more information about Best Senior Living, including how to participate in next year’s survey, are welcome to contact the U.S. News team at [email protected] .

Trump-Backed Bernie Moreno Wins the Republican Senate Primary in Ohio

Mr. Moreno, who has never held elected office, will try to unseat Senator Sherrod Brown, the last remaining Democrat to hold statewide office.

us news cruises

By Jonathan Weisman

  • March 19, 2024

Bernie Moreno, a wealthy former car dealer and political newcomer, rode the endorsement of former President Donald J. Trump to victory on Tuesday in a hotly contested primary to determine which Ohio Republican would take on incumbent Senator Sherrod Brown, the last Democrat to hold elective statewide office in the increasingly Republican state.

Mr. Moreno beat State Senator Matt Dolan, whose family is a majority owner of the Cleveland Guardians baseball team, and Frank LaRose, Ohio’s secretary of state, once again proving the power of Mr. Trump’s backing among Republican primary voters. Rarely has a contest so clearly divided the old-line Republican establishment from the new Trump wing of the party, and again, the former president’s movement prevailed.

“We’re the party of the future,” declared Mr. Moreno, who would be one of the Senate’s richest members, and its only South American-born member, if elected in November. “We’re the party that’s going to rebuild the middle class in this country.”

Mr. Brown answered, “The choice ahead of Ohio is clear: Bernie Moreno has spent his career and campaign putting himself first and would do the same if elected. Elections come down to whose side you’re on, and I’ll always work for Ohio.”

It was, for Mr. Trump, another triumph. For Mr. Dolan, it was a second loss to a Trump-backed political neophyte. In 2022, the author and investor J.D. Vance beat him in the primary race for retiring Senator Rob Portman’s seat and went on to win the general election that fall.

In stumping for Mr. Dolan, Mike DeWine, Ohio’s Republican governor, tried to make the case that Mr. Dolan was the best candidate to take on Mr. Brown, whose blue-collar appeal and well-established political persona could be tough to beat, even in a state where Mr. Trump won the last two presidential elections by more than eight percentage points each time.

But in the Trump era, electability has rarely beaten fealty when the former president has gotten involved. Mr. Moreno flooded Ohio airwaves with advertisements attacking Mr. Dolan for what he called an insufficient level of support for Mr. Trump’s border policies. Mr. Trump rallied voters for Mr. Moreno over the weekend outside Dayton, making headlines for saying some migrants were “not people” and, amid a discussion of the auto industry, predicting “a blood bath” if he lost in November.

Mr. Moreno will enter the general election depleted of cash and bruised by an extremely negative primary campaign that ended with a super PAC backing Mr. Dolan airing allegations from an Associated Press report that he had once advertised on an adult website for male dates. Mr. Moreno’s campaign said the adult website profile was created in 2008 by an intern as a prank.

Of the $9.7 million that Mr. Moreno has raised for his run, less than $2.4 million remained at the end of February, according to campaign finance reports.

A Democratic super PAC aired advertisements in the closing days of the primary to elevate Mr. Moreno, clearly indicating that he was the candidate the party wanted to take on in November.

That same organization, the Senate Majority PAC, immediately castigated the candidate it had elevated, saying in a statement that Mr. Moreno “won’t be able to hide from the fact that he is a shady car salesman.” The Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee attacked him immediately as well, recycling videos of attacks from Mr. Dolan and Mr. LaRose that tarred the newly minted nominee as an untrustworthy, corrupt extremist.

The Senate Republicans’ political arm framed the race differently. “Bernie is a political outsider running against a liberal career politician who has been running for office for 50 years,” said Senator Steve Daines of Montana, who chairs the National Republican Senatorial Committee.

Mr. Brown enters the general election primed, rested and ready. He has raked in money not only from unions that are steadfastly loyal to him but also from corporations that have business before the Senate Banking Committee, which he chairs. His campaign has raised at least $26.7 million this election cycle, and has more than $13.5 million cash on hand.

But Mr. Moreno will be running in a state that has become increasingly hostile to Democrats — and that President Biden is unlikely to contest seriously as he campaigns for another term.

Mr. Brown, who was first elected to the Senate in 2006, evinced little concern over his third re-election bid. The Democrat has made his reputation as a pro-worker politician who has stood against free-trade agreements and stood for unions in a state where the working class has drifted to the G.O.P. since Barack Obama won it twice.

“We will spend this campaign contrasting my position on taking on Wall Street, my position on taking on the drug companies, my position on trade with theirs,” he told reporters on Monday in Dayton, Ohio.

Ohioans did vote last November to enshrine abortion rights in the state’s Constitution and to legalize marijuana, votes that Mr. Brown says show a political complexity that defies clear partisan division.

With control of the Senate within Republicans’ reach, Ohio and Montana — the only states where Mr. Trump won in 2020 and a Democrat is standing for re-election — promise to gain huge national attention. Democrats hold 51 Senate seats, but one of those, in deep-red West Virginia, is virtually gone with the retirement of the conservative Democrat Joe Manchin III.

The Senate Leadership Fund, a super PAC aligned with the Senate Republican leadership, and an allied group, American Crossroads, have already reserved nearly $83 million worth of advertising time this fall in Ohio.
