The cost of living crisis is prompting many to cut down on luxuries such as streaming services and takeaway coffee. 

But after two years of Covid lockdowns, many of those who can afford it are still planning to spend money on a holiday. 

With the average week-long holiday set to cost UK holidaymakers around £1,000 per person, holidaymakers will be looking to get the best deals possible for their upcoming trips.

Ultimate Travel Club, a new subscription-based travel firm, says it offers members access to holidays for trade prices, with as much as 60% discount available

Some may be tempted by a new subscription service called Ultimate Travel Club , which, for a £99 annual fee, claims to offer them 'trade prices' on their holidays. 

But how does it work and is it too good to be true? 

The start-up travel company says it offers discounts of around 40 per cent on a range of holidays, flights and additional travel items. 

The exclusive discounts are reportedly offered at trade prices, which would mean customers wouldn't pay the commission or overhead costs charged by traditional travel firms.

The subscription costs £99 for 12 months, although it is currently offering a free trial. 

'As a start-up we don’t have the legacy costs and overheads associated with more established travel companies,' Brett Norton, the boss of Ultimate Travel Club said. 

'This means we can operate with a very different business model, which can provide incredible value to customers.'

Subscriptions to travel services are becoming more popular, from the discount flight subscription Jack's Flight Club, to luxury travel accommodation pass, Inspirato.

UTC offers an unlimited free trial to help customers compare ensuring you always get the bests value holiday for the cheapest price

A look at the UTC website shows it covers both ends of the market, with a range of affordable and luxury holidays at marked-down prices.

But are the prices really better than those you could get elsewhere?  

I took a look at some of the more popular holiday destinations and peak travel times to compare prices on a range of package holidays.

I looked at booking an all inclusive, seven-night stay at the Iberostar Rose Hall Beach in Jamaica, comparing UTC's to those offered by Expedia and Booking.com.

At the end of September, flying from London Heathrow, you could get an all inclusive stay for two for a total of £1,342 per person via UTC. 

On Expedia, the same hotel, flights and dates would set you back £1,437 each, or £1,451 on Booking.com - meaning you could be save up to £200 on your overall trip. 

This would more than cover the £99 yearly subscription in just one holiday.

But for shorter stays, holidaymakers may need to jet off more than once to get your money's worth. 

Closer to home, I looked at a 3-night city break for two, travelling from Luton to the 3-star Hotel Sant Agusti in Barcelona at the end of July.

The trip is available for £787 for the hotel and two flights through Expedia, with a small saving of £15 overall if you booked through UTC. 

But, the same trip is more expensive through UTC than Booking.com, which is currently going for £738.

In this instance, you would be better off to book through Booking.com. 

However, it is worth noting that UTC is currently offering to cover the difference if you find your trip advertised cheaper through another provider. 

As well as flights and hotels, UTC says subscribers can save up to 25 per cent on dining out at thousands of UK restaurants, 30 per cent on cinema tickets, plus 50 per cent on days out in the UK. 

The membership is currently only able to be paid in one lump sum, though UTC has said it is looking to introduce monthly memberships in the near future. 

You also get around 2 per cent 'cashback' on your bookings, which can be saved up and to get further discounts in the future.

Cheap deals? UTC says it is the cheapest place to book a holiday online. Although we found one holiday for less on Booking.com, UTC says it will refund the difference

According to UTC's  website, traditional travel businesses make their money by adding as much as 40 per cent commission to the rates they get from suppliers.

By charging customers an upfront yearly fee instead, Ultimate Travel Club says it is able to offer better rates than its competitors. 

Though as our quick check confirmed, this might not always be the case so it is still worth shopping around. 

Norton added: 'The cost of living increases are bound to have an effect on many people’s budgets, and sadly I think it’s a reality that this year some people are going to have to sacrifice their annual holiday.

'More than ever, people are looking for value, so I can’t think of a better time to offer consumers a product that will help them save significantly on their travel. 

'We have many examples of members saving £800 or more on a single trip.'

These Private Travel Clubs Are Exclusive — and Affordable

If unrivaled access and seamless planning sound like your style, perhaps it’s time to sign up for a private travel group.

Andria Gutierrez is a marketing executive in Lake Tahoe, California, who loves to travel — but doesn't love the time suck of researching vacations. "When I was younger, I planned all my own trips," she says. "But now that I own a business, I just don't have the spare hours anymore."

That's why she recently joined Allcall , which offers personalized itineraries and exclusive deals to members. She's already taken three Allcall trips, including a multi-state ski trip and a vacation in Baja California, Mexico. "The team is incredibly helpful and responsive," Gutierrez says. "They make the planning process so efficient."

While some established outfits like Exclusive Resorts and Wheels Up have catered to the ultra-wealthy for years, a number of new clubs are opening their doors. One reason is, of course, a new obsession with safety.

"Health has become the paramount concern of our members," says Melissa Biggs Bradley, founder of Indagare , which plans and books trips for its members. "We have a ton of information on COVID protocols, and the team takes care of understanding those, even as they change all the time."

There are other factors at play. "I'd traveled independently for decades," says Suzy Kellems Dominik, an artist from New York City. But hearing about an opportunity to visit Modena, Italy, with acclaimed chef Massimo Bottura of Osteria Francescana was enough to convince her to join Prior , a company that started in 2019.

"What's so interesting is that they have this access," Kellems Dominik says. "It's intellectual and emotional travel — the imagination is just endless — and they curated a group of very interesting people who were all like-minded around food."

That ability to open doors is also drawing travelers who don't normally think of themselves as joiners. Around half of all millennials are now considering signing up for some form of travel club, according to one industry survey, outpacing the interest from Gen Xers and baby boomers. Even Exclusive Resorts, which charges an extra hefty fee per day for trips on top of the cost of membership, has seen a surge of interest from young families. In 2020, the company notched its best December in nine years, despite the pandemic.

So which of these clubs is right for you? It all depends on what you're looking for — and how much you're ready to invest.

For Upscale Private Stays

Exclusive Resorts has a portfolio of over 400 vacation homes, plus members-only cruises and expeditions. Inspirato has the keys to villas in over 180 locations; members can also jump aboard cruises arranged by the company. A more affordable choice is Koala , which allows travelers to book one-off stays in timeshares all over the globe.

For a Like-Minded Community

El Camino began as a small-group-trip operator focused on helping women to travel to new places, but has since unveiled El Camino Travel Clubhouse, a platform that allows members to participate in virtual events and chats about upcoming trips. Manifest , which debuted in August 2020, has chapters in cities across the United States. "We create a social aspect, with people getting to know each other outside of just traveling together," founder Jeff Potter says.

For Feel-good Trips

The upstart wellness website and app MyLifeWell went live in 2020 with virtual fitness classes and a selection of workout gear. Now it connects subscribers with travel advisors who specialize in booking wellness retreats at Canyon Ranch properties, among others.

For the Commitment-phobic

The high cost of clubs has historically been a barrier to signing up. But in the spring of 2020, Prior lowered its price tag in an effort to draw together a more diverse group of adventurers. "I don't want a club in the sense of shutting people out," founder David Prior says. Travel + Leisure Co. launched its own affordable subscription club, promising preferential rates and insider experiences around the world.

The Travellers Club was founded in 1819 by a cohort led by Lord Castlereagh and in 1832 moved to its present purpose-built clubhouse designed by Charles Barry. The Club's founding ethos was to establish a meeting place for like-minded gentlemen who had travelled abroad, and where they could also entertain foreign visitors and diplomats posted to London.

Members of the Diplomatic Service, the Home Civil Service and the Armed Forces have traditionally formed the backbone of the Travellers Club and we continue to have many among our members.

Travel Club

The Club has appointed Scenic Car Tours , as its partner and official tour operator, to offer members an annual programme of tours and events both in the UK and abroad.

UK Tour to Scotland for 2024.

Saturday 7 th September – Friday 13 th September 2024.

Having not provided the option of a UK tour in 2023, we return with our 2024 Ride back to Scotland.

Visiting the West Scottish coast line, but to a Venue we have not stayed in before.

There will be a Mid Journey Stopover at Dryfebridge Hotel, Dryfebridge, Lockerbie DG11 2SF on the way to our main base, and then a return stopover, as we make our way home, 6 days later.

The tour will start out from Roy Pidcock BMW in Long Eaton, or from your own location, and then travel up to Lockerbie for all of us to meet, at our first stop.

An evening meal will be included on our arrival and then prior to departure, a healthy Scottish breakfast to send us off.

We will have a full day to travel the 170 miles to our Base Hotel and be enjoying our 5 nights stay

at THE HOLLY TREE HOTEL, KENTALLEN PIER, ARGYLL, PA38 4BY.

At our Base Hotel, we shall have Breakfast and Evening Meals each day, included in the price, at a super hotel with imposing looks and a great Loch View!

Ben Nevis shouldn’t be too far away either!

The Gainsborough Bath Spa, Bath

St Brides Spa Hotel, Pembrokeshire

Set on a cliff overlooking Saundersfoot on the Pembrokeshire coast, the views "are pure relaxation before you've even put on a spa bathrobe", said The Times . And the best place to appreciate them is the outdoor hydrotherapy pool, accompanied by a "soundtrack of crashing waves and squawking seagulls". Indoors, massages and facials feature seaweed, "one of the most potent (if sometimes a little pungent) skin softeners around". Here, you can "drift off in the thermal suite", said The Independent , or "wallow in the harbour-facing infinity pool on even the foulest of days".

Seaham Hall, Co Durham

An award-winning five-star spa hotel, Seaham Hall is "principally a lovely spa with some accommodation attached", said The Times , and combines the "best of contemporary hospitality and heritage", according to Luxury Lifestyle Magazine . Follow the tunnel from the hotel to the Serenity Spa, a "destination in its own right", which includes a 20-metre pool, steam room, sauna and hydrotherapy thermal experiences. Beyond the "many saunas and gleaming teak-floored massage rooms" is the Zen Garden, with "relaxation beds and a bubbling infinity pool". 

SenSpa at Careys Manor Hotel, Hampshire

Its rural location in the heart of the New Forest means SenSpa at Careys Manor "goes beyond a typical pamper break", said Red , by "allowing you to reconnect with nature". The award-winning Thai-inspired spa will "refresh your senses" with a hydrotherapy suite including a hydrotherapy pool, herbal sauna and crystal steam room. Don't miss the experience showers, which "emulate thunderstorms", and health showers, which "target jets of hot and cold water on the muscles", said The Telegraph . The Thai masseuses are remedial therapists who can "highlight musculoskeletal problems as well as provide deep relaxation".

Ned's Club Spa, London

Beneath London's smartest and coolest members' club lies this spa, open to non-members, with a "list of serious treatments", said Condé Nast Traveller , such as osteopathy, lymphatic massage, LED light therapy and cryotherapy facials. Or if you "just want to be sent comatose", try the Akwaterra massage, using heated sandstone pods to "glide up and down the body", reaching "deep into the muscles". And do leave time for "dedicated luxuriating by the dark, brooding" pool on one of the "impossibly chic" loungers. Among the "reliably effective" massages here, said the London Evening Standard , the CBD massage stands out as "exceptional at working out knots and pain points".

Gleneagles, Perth and Kinross

When this "grey-stone pile" opened a century ago, it was "hailed as the 'eighth wonder of the world'", said The Times , "and it continues to dazzle to this day". It's a "sublime haven of sybaritic delights", which offers "every conceivable face and body treatment", said The Telegraph , with professional practitioners and therapists delivering complementary and alternative therapies. Saunas, steam rooms, hydrotherapy vitality pool and "superb relaxation" areas all contribute to the sense of "sheer blissed-out, all-over wellbeing".

Four Seasons Hotel London at Park Lane

This rooftop spa is "a picture of bold and classy design", said The Telegraph , merging "Art Deco elegance with idiosyncratic charm". Leave time for the "pre-treatment pampering", particularly the bubbling vitality pool and underwater seating, and the "wood-clad relaxation room". And "no spa in London can rival the views", overlooking the trees in Hyde Park, with "particularly magnificent vistas" from the sauna, so "if your therapist asks how you'd like the curtains the correct answer is 'open'", said Time Out . After your treatment, head to a "dimly lit relaxation pod", for a "steaming cup of tea and some nibbles", put on a pair of headphones and "let the calming effects of your treatment really sink in".
