American Airlines canceled over 1,500 flights over the Halloween weekend, blaming weather woes and staffing issues.

On Sunday, the airline had canceled 793 total flights as of 1:30 p.m., or 29 percent of all of its planned flights that day, accounting for nearly one-third of all of the country’s cancelations, according to data from aviation tracking website  FlightAware . Another 31 flights, or 1 percent, were delayed.

American canceled an additional 543 flights, or 20 percent of its total planned flights, on Saturday. Another 407 flights, or 15 percent of its flights, were delayed, according to data.

In a note to staff on Saturday, American COO David Seymour blamed the delays on poor weather conditions around the Dallas-Fort Worth International Airport, the airline’s base of operations, that had displaced staff around the country, according to CNBC .

“With additional weather throughout the system, our staffing begins to run tight as crew members end up out of their regular flight sequences,” Seymour said.

American Airlines expects to get back roughly 1,800 flight attendants following leave in preparation for the holiday season.

“To make sure we are taking care of our customers and providing scheduling certainty for our crews, we have adjusted our operation for the last few days this month by proactively canceling some flights,” American said.

After massive staff cuts during the COVID-19 pandemic, American announced that 1,800 flight attendants will be returning from leave on Nov. 1 in preparation for the holiday travel season, with more expected to return on Dec. 1, according to CNBC.

American Airlines has canceled over 1,000 of its flights during Halloween weekend due to issues relating to weather and staffing shortages.

American airlines cancels hundreds of halloween weekend flights, the airline cites high winds at dallas-fort worth hub, says some flights were "proactively canceled" because of covid-19 staffing issues..

American Airlines canceled more than 1,600 weekend flights, but a top executive said in a letter to employees that tight staffing will ease with the return of hundreds of workers from various leaves and a plan to hire 600 new flight attendants.

ACROSS AMERICA — American Airlines canceled hundreds more flights Sunday at the end of a three-day Halloween weekend riddled by about 1,800 cancellations. The airline said normal flights will resume for the most part Monday, although there will be “some residual impact from the weekend.”

By Sunday afternoon, American had already canceled more than 100 Monday flights, according to the FlightAware tracking service. The more than 900 flights canceled Sunday represented one-third of the airline's schedule for the day. American Airlines scrapped nearly 900 flights over the previous two days, according to FlightAware.

The airlines problems began Thursday with weather problems at Dallas Love International Airport, its largest hub serving the Dallas-Fort Worth area, and staffing shortages that have plagued airlines industry-wide.

About two-thirds of Sunday's cancellations were due to a lack of flight attendants in the right places, with almost all the remaining cancellations due to a shortage of pilots, according to internal figures seen by The Associated Press.

In a letter Saturday to employees, Chief Operating Officer David Seymour said high winds a DFW cut a large number of arrivals, according to a report by The Washington Post.

“This week saw two days of severe winds in DFW, with gusts of up to 50 mph on Thursday, creating crosswind limitations that sharply reduced arrival capacity by more than half,” Seymour wrote. “This weather drove a large number of cancellations at DFW, as we could only use two runways instead of the usual five that handle our operation.”

Staffing remains tight because of the COVID-19 pandemic, and some crew members “end up out of their regular flight sequences,” he wrote. “To make sure we are taking care of our customers and providing scheduling certainty for our crews, we have adjusted our operation for the last few days this month by proactively canceling some flights.”

Seymour reassured employees that the situation should begin to ease. Nearly 1,800 flight attendants who have been on various leaves are returning to work beginning this week. More crew members will return to work starting Dec. 1, and American Airlines plans to add another 600 flight attendants by month’s end.

Airlines are preparing for what is typically a busy holiday travel season, but also a rush of air traffic beginning Nov. 8 when the COVID-19 travel ban expires and U.S. borders once again open to vaccinated travelers from other countries.

Delta Air Lines Chief Executive Ed Bastian said lifting international travel restrictions will be “a bit sloppy at first” and travelers should brace for long lines at airports, Reuters reported.

"We're going to have a good surge of demand but in order to keep that surge up we're going to need to make it easier and easier for people to figure out what the documentation requirements are,” Bastian said at a U.S. travel event last week.

U.S. Travel Chief Executive Roger Dow told Reuters there may be “a few hiccups” if U.S. border officials aren’t fully prepared for what he expects to be a surge in international travel.

Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas said at the travel event that he is confident “we’re going to be equipped to handle what we hope to be a real surge in holiday traffic.”

Earlier this month, Southwest Airlines cancelled hundreds of flights, citing bad weather and air traffic control issues. The airline and its pilots union denied reports of a sickout to protest mandatory COVID-19 vaccinations, The Associated Press reported.

Both American Airlines and Southwest are federal contractors and subject to the Biden administration’s executive order requiring federal employees to get COVID-19 vaccinations by Dec. 8.

Both airlines and the White House have said they don’t expect the order to cause a mass exodus of employees that would hamper airlines’ ability to meet the demands of increased holiday and international travel, according to Reuters.

American cancels over 1,500 flights during Halloween weekend

PS LAX Salon American Airlines

American Airlines has canceled over 1,500 flights this weekend and an additional 1,200 flights have been delayed according to the latest data from FlightAware . The airline has also canceled some over 660 flights so far today, Sunday, Oct. 31.

The cancellations have taken place at airports across the country, with a particularly high concentration of flight disruptions in Dallas-Fort Worth (DFW) and airports along the east coast. Winds were, in fact, blamed in a statement from American Airlines COO David Seymour to its team members obtained by TPG.

According to FlightAware, the airline canceled 342 flights on Friday, Oct. 29 and 738 were delayed. On Saturday, Oct. 30, 543 flights were canceled and 431 flights were delayed. For Monday (Nov.1) so far, American Airlines has canceled 37 flights.

"This week saw two days of severe winds in DFW, with gusts of up to 50 mph on Thursday, creating crosswind limitations that sharply reduced arrival capacity by more than half. This weather drove a large number of cancellations at DFW, as we could only use two runways instead of the usual five that handle our operation," said Seymour in the statement.

The weather delays and resulting disruption of staffing schedules caused the airline to proactively cancel some flights, said Seymour. He added that there was nonetheless "good news."

"Specifically, for flight attendants, we have nearly 1,800 returning from leave starting Nov 1— and the remainder coming back by Dec. 1— and will have 600+ new hire flight attendants on property by end of December. Additionally, hiring for our airports is well underway and we anticipate 4,000 new team members joining us across the system in the fourth quarter. The hiring of pilots and within Tech Ops continues to take place, and we already began ramping up hiring in Reservations so more team members will be in place for the holiday season."

One flyer in Miami (MIA) contacted TPG to say he couldn't get a flight out to Los Angeles until Sunday.

"Although I [have] elite [status] and could use the lounge, they still stranded me in Miami with no hotel, food or compensation," the traveler said in an email. "You should have seen the lines for the common traveler. You can imagine how they treated them if they totally left me hanging and I am Executive Platinum [with American Airlines]."

Southwest has also struggled this weekend. So far today, 185 flights have been canceled and 148 flights have been delayed. On Saturday, 87 flights were canceled and 743 flights were delayed, per FlightAware data.

Airlines have been dealing with cancellations caused by a myriad of factors. In early October, Southwest canceled more than 1,800 flights during one weekend. If you do happen to find yourself in the unfortunate position of having your flight canceled, make sure to consult this list of steps to take so that you don't get stuck.

American Airlines has canceled more than 800 flights between Friday and Saturday, according to FlightAware.

Several cancellations were reported coast to coast from Charlotte, North Carolina to Los Angeles.

The company blamed the numerous cancellations on severe weather out of Dallas, Texas and staffing shortages.

"To make sure we are taking care of our customers and providing scheduling certainty for our crews, we have adjusted our operation for the last few days this month by proactively canceling some flights," Chief Operating Officer David Seymour said in a statement to FOX Television Stations Saturday. "We are taking this measure to minimize any inconvenience as much as possible."

American Airlines flight attendant attacked by passenger: New details

An American Airlines flight headed to Orange County, California, was forced to divert to Denver, Colorado, after a passenger allegedly attacked one of the flight attendants. The passenger, who reportedly punched the flight attendant in the nose, was arrested when the plane landed in Denver.

"Most of the customers impacted by these changes are being rebooked the same day, and we apologize for having to make these changes," the statement continued.

The company said it expects to ramp up staffing within the coming months, with nearly 1,800 flight attendants returning from leave on Nov. 1. It also hopes to hire more than 600 additional flight attendants by the end of December.

American Airlines raises $2M for Red Cross COVID‑19 relief

Donations will help the Red Cross maintain a sufficient blood supply for patients and equip volunteers and staff with food, shelter and relief supplies.

The company added that it expects to hire 4,000 airport personnel by the end of the year.

The moves is the latest indication that leisure travel in the U.S. is recovering more quickly from the pandemic than airlines expected.

"Increasing customer demand and new routes starting later this year mean we need more flight attendants to operate the airline," Brady Byrnes, the airline’s vice president of flight service, told flight attendants in a memo over the summer.

Last year, American offered long-term leaves of absence to flight attendants and other employees to cut costs while it struggled with a steep drop in travel caused by the coronavirus outbreak. Other airlines did the same thing. Now they need people.

When the pandemic hit, the number of people flying in the U.S. plunged below 100,000 on some days, a level not seen in decades. This year, it has climbed from less than 700,000 a day in early February to 2 million a day in July.

American Airlines, Alaska Airlines and JetBlue are joining United Airlines in requiring employees to be vaccinated against COVID-19, as the Biden administration steps up pressure on major U.S. carriers to require the shots.

American Airlines CEO Doug Parker told employees that the airline is still working on details, but "it is clear that team members who choose to remain unvaccinated will not be able to work at American Airlines."

The pilot union at American recently estimated that 4,200 — or 30% — of the airline’s pilots are not vaccinated.

Airlines are large employers that fall under Biden’s sweeping order that companies with more than 100 workers require employees to be vaccinated or undergo weekly testing for the virus.

Employees can seek waivers from the vaccines on medical or religious grounds.

A group reportedly totaling hundreds of people including current and former American Airlines employees protested outside the company's Fort Worth, Texas, headquarters last week, over the carrier's decision to mandate that all employees get vaccinated for COVID-19 or lose their jobs.

A crowd of hundreds also gathered outside American's Fort Worth headquarters earlier this month on Oct. 7, after the company announced its workers would face being fired if they were not fully vaccinated by Nov. 24.

American Airlines canceled another 436 flights on Monday following its Halloween weekend chaos

  • American Airlines kicked off the week by canceling 436 flights as of midday Monday.
  • Since Friday, American has canceled over 2,000 flights and delayed about 1,500.
  • American Airlines said the cancellations happened because of staff shortages and bad weather.

Insider Today

American Airlines kicked off its Monday morning by canceling 250 flights by 4:30 a.m. Central Time, an American spokesperson told Insider.

Since then, another 186 have been canceled, bringing the airline's total cancellations to 436, according to American. FlightAware pegs the cancellations at 15% of its total operations, but American told Insider it is only about 8%.

Monday's cancellations came after the carrier faced a Halloween weekend full of chaos due to bad weather and staff shortages.

Related stories

American Airlines has canceled over 2,000 flights since Friday, including 343 flights on Friday, 548 flights on Saturday, 1,060 flights on Sunday, and 436 on Monday, bringing the total number to 2,387. American told Insider that Sunday's mass cancellations accounted for about 21% of the airline's operation, though FlightAware reported 36%. The cancellations impacted over 136,000 customers, according to a company document viewed by CNBC .

There were also nearly 900 delayed flights between Friday and Sunday, with another 541 delayed as of 3:30 p.m. Central Time Monday, according to FlightAware.

"We expect considerable improvement beginning today with some residual impact from the weekend," the American Airlines spokesperson told Insider on Monday morning.

American's chief operating officer blamed strong winds at its massive Dallas Fort-Worth hub for a large portion of weekend cancellations, saying that because of the weather, only two runways were available for use as opposed to the usual five.

The issues at Dallas Fort-Worth subsequently left employees in the wrong locations, unable to catch the correct flights.

Despite the trouble, COO David Seymour on Saturday told employees in a letter seen by Insider that most fliers were being rebooked the same day.

In order to avoid a similar situation as holiday travel ramps up, 1,800 flight attendants are set to return from leave on November 1, with an additional group headed back to work on December 1. The company has been requiring cabin crews to work extra shifts despite contract rules, according to a memo sent to members of American's flight attendant union, the Association of Professional Flight Attendants.

"The fact that there is inadequate staffing to cover the operation as it is currently structured is not the fault of flight attendants," union leadership said in the letter.

American also plans to hire 600 more employees by the end of 2021, including pilots and airport crew, Seymour said in the letter.

American Airlines cancels over 1,500 flights over Halloween weekend due to ‘bad weather conditions’, staff shortages

Ana Gonzalez , Digital Content Producer

Houston-area travelers flying American Airlines this weekend may encounter a bump in their travel plans.

The Dallas-based airline cancelled more than 1,500 flights throughout Halloween weekend, including 600 flights cancelled as of Sunday morning, which is about 9% of their flight schedule.

Flight schedules at Bush Intercontinental Airport have seen cancellations in both arrivals and departures. Meanwhile, at Hobby Airport, flights continue to remain on schedule.

According to CNN , the airline said in a statement they are dealing with weather issues and staffing shortages that started last week. Their largest hub, located in Dallas-Fort Worth International Airport, dealt with reduced arrival capacity and had to use two runways instead of five.

Airlines are hoping to bounce back as the coronavirus pandemic slowed down travel, especially during the holiday season.

American Airlines told KPRC 2 in a statement that over 1,800 flight attendants will return to their duties by Dec. 1 and hiring efforts have increased this quarter.

American Airlines had cancelled 670 flights by 9am on Sunday, nearly a quarter of all its daily flights, according to the flight-tracking website Flight Aware.

That brought the total number of flights cancelled by American Airlines over the Halloween Weekend to over 1500.

The airline blamed bad weather and ongoing staff shortages are to blame.

In a statement provided on Saturday, it said two days of high winds at its main hub at Dallas-Fort Worth Airport had severely reduced its flight capacity, and left staff and planes out of sequence.

Thousands of angry passengers took to social media to vent their frustrations at the airline.

Many reported they had been unable to reach conferences or family gatherings over the Halloween weekend.

One passenger said they had three flights cancelled in two days. Another said it took four hours to reach the airline’s “rude” customer service staff after having two flights cancelled.

The cancellations had wrought “chaos” at Charlotte Douglas Airport in North Carolina, one person wrote.

“You’ve got brides and grooms and kids and people trying to make cruises and prepaid vacations all stranded with no reasons given,” the frustrated traveller wrote.

In a statement to staff on Saturday shared with The Independent, American Airlines Chief Operating Officer David Seymour said two days of “severe winds” at Dallas-Fort Worth earlier in the week had halved the number of flights that were able to land there.

“This weather drove a large number of cancellations at (Dallas-Fort Worth), as we could only use two runways instead of the usual five that handle our operation.”

Airline crew had been stranded “out of sequence”, and they had proactively cancelled flights in response.

Mr Seymour said staffing shortages were expected to ease when 1800 return from leave on 1 November.

American Airlines cancels hundreds of flights during Halloween weekend

american airlines halloween travel

By Ramishah Maruf and Pete Muntean, CNN Business

American Airlines canceled hundreds of flights during the weekend, citing bad weather and staffing shortages, the company announced in a statement.

Two days of severe winds in Dallas-Fort Worth, its largest hub, sharply reduced its arrival capacity, the company said. Flights were also affected at its Charlotte, North Carolina, hub.

“With additional weather throughout the system, our staffing begins to run tight as crew members end up out of their regular flight sequences,” American said in a statement to CNN.

As of Saturday night, FlightAware , an aviation tracking program, showed 499 flights, or 18% of the airline’s operations, were canceled. Another nearly 300 flights, or 11% of its operations, were delayed.

American also preemptively canceled 284 flights for Sunday.

On Friday, FlightAware showed 738, or almost a quarter, of American’s operations were delayed, and it had 342 flight cancellations.

American reported 4,967 flights had been scheduled on Saturday.

“To make sure we are taking care of our customers and providing scheduling certainty for our crews, we have adjusted our operation for the last few days this month by proactively canceling some flights,” American said.

Thousands of passengers are traveling during the Halloween weekend right now, many of them tweeting their grievances to the company.

In comparison, Southwest, which has fewer flights per day, has canceled 86 flights and delayed 473.

As air travel plunged in early 2020, airlines offered buyouts and early retirement packages to employees in order to cut costs. As they try to hire, or rehire, workers, service disruptions have become more frequent.

American expects more in-flight teams will return during the holiday season. The airline said 1,800 flight attendants will return Monday and the rest will be back by December 1. The airline said it is also increasing hiring in the fourth quarter.

As travel ramps up after all but shutting down during the early days of the Covid-19 pandemic, other airlines also have had difficulty returning to normal operations. Southwest had an operational meltdown during one weekend in October, canceling more than 2,000 weekend flights.

The company blamed the move on air traffic control problems and limited staffing in Florida as well as bad weather, saying getting its operations back to normal was “more difficult and prolonged” because of schedule and staffing reductions it instituted during the pandemic.

Halloween: how do airlines and airports celebrate the occasion.

Some airlines are having monster sales for Halloween.

Following two years of restrictions due to the COVID-19 pandemic, airports and airlines plan to use Halloween 2022 as an excuse to celebrate air travel. With conflicting opinions as to how Halloween came about, there is no doubt that Irish and Scottish immigrants brought their All Hallows Eve traditions with them to North America in the 19th Century.Focused around autumn and All Saints' Day on November 1, Halloween is a celebration of all things scary. Never one to miss an opportunity to promote themselves each year, airlines try and think of a novel way to gain public awareness by offering cheap tickets and themed foods and drinks.

Scary low fares

For Halloween 2022, Iceland's low-cost airline Play offers " scary low prices from Boston to Europe." The Reykjavik-based airline offers flights from Boston to Berlin, Copenhagen, Dublin, Iceland, Liverpool, London, and Paris for $129 one-way if booked as part of a round-trip ticket. The flights must be purchased up to and including Monday, October 31, and are good for travel until March 31, 2023.

Southwest Airlines

Never one to miss out on a bit of fun, American budget airline Southwest offered a "monster sale" on flights to select destinations in the United States. Until last Friday, you could have purchased a one-way ticket for $49. They even joked that you did not need to wear a costume to get the enticing sale price.

American Airlines

Suppose you are an aviation enthusiast and want to express your love of flying with an aviation-themed pumpkin. American Airlines says it is "creeping it real" with aviation-themed pumpkin stencils. Check out the free stencil downloads at aa.com/halloween.

Spirit Airlines

If there were ever an airline with the perfect name for Halloween, it would have to be American low-cost carrier Spirit . Sadly the deal expired on October 30, but if you were lucky enough, you could have snagged a one-way fare for $39.

Delta Air Lines

For Halloween 2022, Atlanta-based Delta Air Lines is adding 13 spooky movies and Tv shows to its inflight entertainment. The movies Delta has added are the following:

  • "The Conjuring: The Devil Made Me Do It"
  • "Ghostbusters"
  • "Shutter Island"
  • "Silence of the Lambs"
  • Lovecraft Country
  • "Beetlejuice"
  • "Halloweentown"
  • "The Sixth Sense"
  • American Horror Story
  • "The Exorcist"
  • Are you Afraid of the Dark?

For children, there is a selection of Halloween-themed cartoons and the hit movie Monsters Inc.

Alaska Airlines

Always one to find an excuse for a promotion, Alaska Airlines has turned its back on Halloween this year. Instead, the Northwest airline wants to celebrate Seattle's NHL franchise, the Seattle Kraken. Any passenger wearing a Kraken hockey jersey will be offered free priority season throughout the hockey season.

Expect to see airports decorated for Halloween

Airline employees and airport staff love Halloween, so don't be surprised if you see people wearing costumes. However, because of safety and security, there is only so much airports can do to celebrate occasions like Halloween.

Have a Halloween cocktail before your flight

Ticket counters may have the odd skeleton or two hanging around, but if you want to get into the spirit of Halloween before your flight, head to an airport bar. Not only will it be decorated with cobwebs, ghouls, and ghosts, but you will also find discounted Halloween drinks. Besides Halloween-inspired beers, they will have cocktails like the zombie, witches brew, vampire kiss, and the pumpkin martini.

How did you celebrate Halloween this year? Did it involve air travel? Leave a comment below and let us know!

American Airlines Cancels Hundreds of Flights Over Halloween Weekend

american airlines halloween travel

American Airlines was forced to cancel over 1,300 flights over the course of Halloween weekend, citing severe storms and staffing issues.

The world’s largest airline had cancelled 537 flights – representing 20% of its total schedule – as of 9:30 p.m. EDT on Saturday according to FlightAware, a service that tracks such information.  It had already cancelled 342 flights on Friday and has preemptively cancelled 447 on Sunday and 18 on Monday.

An additional 389 flights were delayed on Saturday, after the airline had experienced 737 delays on Friday.

High winds and severe weather at two major hubs – Dallas/Fort Worth International and Charlotte-Douglas International airports – resulted in many of the cancellations.  The weather had an effect on staffing as well.

“With additional weather throughout the system, our staffing begins to run tight as crew members end up out of their regular flight sequences,” American’s chief operating officer, David Seymour said in a memorandum sent to airline employees viewed by FBT. “To make sure we are taking care of our customers and providing scheduling certainty for our crews, we have adjusted our operation for the last few days this month by proactively canceling some flights.”

“Most of the customers impacted by these changes are being rebooked the same day,” he added.

8 Incidents in 2 Weeks: What’s Going on With United’s Planes?

While no one was injured, most of the mishaps required emergency landings or diversions. One safety expert said the incidents were not the result of “systemic problems.”

Two blue-and-white commercial airplanes with the word “United” painted on their sides sit on the tarmac at an airport.

By Christine Chung

An engine fire sparked by plastic packaging wrap , a tire lost shortly after takeoff and a plane veering off the runway : These are among the eight incidents that have occurred over the past two weeks on flights operated by United Airlines. While no injuries — or worse — have been reported, the mishaps have generated headlines and stoked rising anxiety about aviation safety among federal officials and passengers alike.

All of the incidents happened on flights that took off from or were headed to airports in the United States, and five involved airplanes made by Boeing, a manufacturer already under intense scrutiny. In January, a door plug blew out of an Alaska Airlines Boeing 737 Max 9 jetliner in mid-flight, forcing the plane to make an emergency landing.

United, one of the world’s largest airlines, flies aircraft manufactured mainly by Boeing and Airbus. In an email United began sending to customers on Monday, the company’s chief executive, Scott Kirby, wrote that while the recent incidents were unrelated, they were “reminders of the importance of safety.”

“I want you to know that these incidents have our attention and have sharpened our focus,” he continued, adding that every case was being reviewed by the airline and would influence its safety training and procedures.

Here’s what travelers should know about the latest in airplane woes.

What exactly happened on or to the planes?

Most of the incidents reported in the last two weeks required emergency landings or diversions.

March 4: A Boeing 737-900 departing from George Bush Intercontinental Airport in Houston returned to the airport to make an emergency landing after one of the plane engines ingested and burned plastic wrap .

March 7: A Boeing 777 leaving San Francisco for Osaka, Japan, made an emergency landing at Los Angeles International Airport after the aircraft lost a tire .

March 8: A Boeing 737 Max 8 veered off the runway upon landing at George Bush Airport in Houston and tilted onto the grass .

Later that day, a flight leaving San Francisco for Mexico City was diverted to Los Angeles after the Airbus A320 experienced issues with its hydraulic system.

March 9: An Airbus A320 heading to Salt Lake City turned back to Chicago O’Hare International Airport after it reported maintenance issues .

March 11: A Boeing 777, flying from Sydney, Australia , to San Francisco, turned back after takeoff because the plane had a hydraulic leak.

March 14: An Airbus A320 that departed from Dallas Fort Worth International Airport had a hydraulic leak shortly before it landed in its scheduled destination, San Francisco.

Later that day, a Boeing 737-800 that took off from San Francisco landed at Rogue Valley International Medford Airport in Oregon missing an external panel .

Are the recent issues typical, or cause for concern?

The mishaps were not the result of “systemic problems,” said Robert Sumwalt, a former chairman of the National Transportation Safety Board who now heads a new aviation safety center at Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University.

“Some of these issues are things that happen occasionally, but often don’t get reported in media,” Mr. Sumwalt said, though he emphasized that none were acceptable.

Kyra Dempsey, who writes about aviation accidents in a blog called Admiral Cloudberg, said that United’s recent issues were being “falsely conflated with Boeing’s troubles.”

“While it’s bad luck that United had so many incidents in such a short period, in general such incidents happen frequently around the world and they aren’t on the rise overall,” Ms. Dempsey said.

How has United responded?

Mr. Kirby’s 270-word message to United customers, including to members of the airline’s frequent flier program, started to be sent on Monday morning, said Josh Freed, a spokesman for United.

Starting in May, United pilots will have an extra day of in-person training, a change that was already planned before the incidents, Mr. Kirby wrote. The airline will also use a “centralized training curriculum for our new hire maintenance technicians” and will dedicate additional resources to the carrier’s supply chain.

What government agencies oversee these issues, and how are they responding?

The Federal Aviation Administration regulates the country’s aviation system and investigates safety incidents on U.S. airlines, while the N.T.S.B. investigates the causes of accidents, collisions and crashes involving planes flown by U.S. carriers, in addition to other accidents involving commercial and mass transit operators. Both agencies have discretion on what they investigate, Mr. Sumwalt said.

Currently, the N.T.S.B. is investigating the incident that occurred on March 8 in Houston, when the plane veered off the runway, an agency spokesperson said. The N.T.S.B. is also looking into a Feb. 10 Los Angeles-to-Newark flight , operated by United, that experienced severe turbulence, leading to injuries among more than a dozen passengers. (The Boeing 777 landed normally, but the flight was met by medical personnel.)

Safety experts said some issues don’t necessarily rise to the level of an investigation by either agency.

For example, partial loss of some of an airplane’s multiple hydraulics systems is common, said Michael McCormick, an assistant professor at Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University and a former F.A.A. control tower operator. The F.A.A. may or may not get involved for this kind of issue, unless there’s a pattern, Mr. Sumwalt said.

The January episode involving the blown door plug aboard the Alaska Airlines jet is under investigation by the N.T.S.B. and the Justice Department.

Boeing: A Company in Turmoil

Boeing is weathering a particularly difficult period: two fatal crashes, a loose panel that blew out during a flight, quality concerns and production slowdowns..

Recent Incidents : A Boeing 737-800 plane that took off on March 15 from San Francisco landed in Oregon missing an external panel . Earlier in the week, a Boeing 787 Dreamliner plane suddenly plunged on a flight to New Zealand , injuring passengers.

Alaska Airlines Flight 1282: After a section of a plane headed for Ontario, Calif., blew out  10 minutes after it took off , there was increased scrutiny  on the plane’s manufacturer: Boeing . The Justice Department has since launched a criminal investigation .

Quality Control Issues: An audit that was initiated by the Federal Aviation Administration after the Alaska Airlines incident found dozens of problems  throughout Boeing’s manufacturing process and one of its key suppliers.

Whistleblower’s Death: John Barnett, a former quality manager for the company, was found dead in Charleston  in March with what appeared to be a self-inflicted gunshot wound. He was set to testify in a lawsuit in which he accused Boeing of retaliation for his complaints about quality and safety.

At Fault: A report released in February by the Federal Aviation Administration said that Boeing’s safety culture remains flawed , despite improvements made after two fatal crashes  in 2018 and 2019.

Solving an Enduring Crisis: The Federal Aviation Administration has asked Boeing to produce an action plan  to address quality control issues. We asked experts how Boeing should try and fix its longstanding problems .

ASTA's Latest Efforts to Fight Back Against American Airlines' NDC Rollout

T he American Society of Travel Advisors (ASTA) continues to push back against American Airlines' controversial New Distribution Capability (NDC) rollout .

On Monday, the Alexandria, Virginia-based organization launched a weeklong ad campaign in POLITICO magazine in hopes of influencing lawmakers in Washington, D.C.

Beginning May 1, American will stop awarding AAdvantage miles and loyalty accrual points through agencies unless they are deemed "preferred," a status achieved by having a 2024 incentive agreement with the airline or by booking through American NDC channels and reaching progressive sales thresholds of 30 percent by April 21, 50 percent by October 31 and 70 percent by April 30, 2025.

"This latest development doubles down on American Airlines' clear agenda since last year to force the travel agency industry to adopt immature technology, monopolize distribution channels, and squeeze channel partners and customers for cost-cutting and profit," ASTA stated.

Additionally, ASTA is offering a toolkit for travel advisors to reach out to their congressional representatives. The organization is also encouraging members to send their clients to SaveMyMiles.com to take action.

"Tell them to stop AA from disenfranchising customers who book through travel agencies by telling Congress—don’t let American Airlines eliminate consumer choice," says ASTA.

More than $95.3 billion in airline tickets were sold by travel advisors and online agencies last year, accounting for about 40 percent of all airline tickets.
