Is good BUT often not updated…..

Today there was a major crash on the Hume Highway, four people died, northbound traffic will be totally blocked for hours but no mention of any accident in the app…only shows road works. To be of any value it needs to reflect the reality of what’s happening.

Developer Response ,

Thank you for your valuable feedback. We acknowledge the importance of real-time updates and apologize for any oversight. We are actively addressing this issue to ensure our app reflects live events accurately. We would be grateful if you could provide us with more details by emailing [email protected]

Pretty useless

Once I deleted this up from my phone because of the bugs and the unreliable information, but after a year I thought I’ll give it another chance. I am using it on the latest Iphone and it is still as bad as it was... I can get used to the hard to navigate pages and the unexpected jumps when viewing maps, I can also manage the very frequent crashes, but the traffic information is really unreliable.. some things get updated and some don’t.. not very useful when planning a few hundred kms trip. I am back using google maps.
Hi kentuckyroad Thank you for writing in, would you mind please contacting us on [email protected] to discuss further the issues you have raised. Thank you Live Traffic NSW

Notifications every 5 minutes

I downloaded the app this morning and set the route I’m planning to take to regional NSW next week, said Yes to notifications (which I very rarely do, but figured it’s important given the current flooding across much of NSW & VIC). My route has 4 flood related incidents marked so it’s good to see that - although the tiny blue dot for water isn’t easy to see & didn’t initially register as a priority, someone unfamiliar with the area might think it’s to indicate a small township. I received my first alert shortly after: “Trip Update - There are 3 new incidents on your saved trip” Since then I’ve been getting the same alert EVERY 5 MINUTES. Nothing has changed at all, I keep going in & checking then re-checking & closing alerts & then more of the exact same come in. I got another alert whilst writing this 🙄 Not ideal, because now I’m going to have to turn the alerts & notifications off.

Holiday and journey planning

Plan for your journey over holiday periods and long weekends using these resources, tips and tools.

Tools to plan your journey

Motorists are advised to plan their trip or consider using public transport during the Easter long weekend, the upcoming autumn school holidays and the ANZAC Day public holiday, with high traffic volumes expected across the state.

There is a suite of planning tools available to make it easier to plan your trip, avoid the busiest times on our roads, and reduce your overall journey time.

Our pinch point journey planning tool will help you avoid the busiest times on our roads by using historical data to show delay times observed at known pinch points around the state, during the same period in previous years.

It should be noted it is very difficult to precisely predict traffic delays. As such, the journey planning tool should act as a guide only to help you plan your journey.

Holiday Pinch Points Journey Planner

Live Traffic NSW is the go-to app for commuters and holiday travellers seeking information about potential delays they might face on their trip.

The app and website provide real-time information about incidents and disruptions on the network., The Live Traffic app also gives customers the ability to receive notifications to their phone, alerting them about incidents and disruptions on their chosen route and time period.

Before leaving on your holiday journey, we strongly recommend setting up your trip to receive real time updates on road conditions and possible delays.

Customers can also choose to ‘follow’ individual incidents to receive notifications when the incident is updated or has ended.

By receiving notifications, road users can ‘set and forget’ and won’t have the hassle of constantly checking the app or site and means they can make the best decisions for their trip at the earliest opportunity. Learn more about the features by visiting the Live Traffic NSW .

Driver reviver sites operate across NSW during peak holiday periods, such as school holidays and long weekends. Drivers are reminded the importance of taking regular breaks along your route to stop, rest and refresh yourself.

Use the Driver Reviver map to locate sites to stop along your route.

For non-peak periods use the rest area stops map to locate a safe place to pull over along your route.

What to expect these holidays

While Easter does not fall within the NSW school holidays this year, we still anticipate large traffic volumes and delays at known pinch points in Sydney and regional areas.

While difficult to predict, significant delays may occur at these locations, increasing the risk of incidents relating to driver frustration, fatigue and hazards caused by traffic queuing in high-speed zones.

Transport for NSW will have traffic management initiatives in place at the major known pinch points, but travellers should still be prepared to experience delays.

Sydney Royal Easter Show

The Easter Show runs from Friday 22 March to Tuesday 2 April at Sydney Olympic Park. Traffic congestion is expected on surrounding roads including the M4 Motorway, Homebush Bay Drive and Centenary Drive.

To avoid congestion, consider using public transport instead. Extra trains and major event buses will run daily – simply present your Easter Show ticket for free travel within Greater Sydney. Plan your trip at transportnsw.info . If you’re driving, it’s essential you pre-book parking online. Allow extra travel time and consider visiting on a weekday to avoid crowds.

Sydney Airport

The Easter long weekend and autumn school holidays are popular times for visiting family and friends. Allow extra time to get to the airport during these periods. We recommend arriving two hours before your flight for domestic travel – even if you have checked in online and/or only have carry-on baggage. Arrive at least three hours before your flight for international travel.

To avoid delays, consider catching the train to the airport. The T8 Airport & South Line services run frequently to and from Sydney Domestic and Sydney International Airports, with services every day between 5am and midnight. Plan your trip at transportnsw.info. If you’re driving, check livetraffic.com for the latest traffic updates before you leave home.

Sydney pinch point map

The known Regional NSW pinch points are M1 Princes Motorway at Wahroonga , Hexham , Coffs Harbour , Tugun , Great Western Highway and the Princes Highway .

Great Western Highway

The Great Western Highway through the Blue Mountains can experience significant congestion during long weekends, school holidays and other special events. As during previous busy travel periods, Transport for NSW will work to help manage this congestion to minimise your travel delays and keep everyone safe on their journey through the mountains.

Learn more about how we manage congestion through the Blue Mountains .

Princes Highway

The Princes Highway from Nowra to Ulladulla can experience significant delays in peak periods. Visit the Princes Highway holiday congestion page to learn more about key Princes Highway pinch points and how to plan your journey to the beautiful NSW South Coast.

Easter traffic chaos as holiday-makers return home, authorities urge people to take care on roads

Thousands have taken to the skies and roads as holiday-makers return from their Easter long weekend trips. Authorities are urging people to take care and expect delays.

William Tyson

Don't miss out on the headlines from NSW. Followed categories will be added to My News.

Thousands of people have taken to the skies and roads as holiday-makers return from their Easter long weekend trips.

Drivers are being urged to stay safe and drive to the conditions with double demerits in force and highway patrols promised to be scattered along major highways.

There are warnings for motorists with traffic expected to be heavy on the M1 Pacific, The Great Western Highway and The Hume Highway.

“Return traffic will start building from the 1 April Easter Monday public holiday as people head back home to return to work and school on Tuesday.” Transport for NSW Acting Chief Customer Officer Roger Weeks said.

“Traffic pinch points are expected on the Pacific Highway at Wahroonga, Coffs Harbour, Hexham and Tugun in the north, Blackheath on the Great Western Highway, Pheasants Nest on the Hume Highway and at Nowra, Jervis Bay, Milton and Ulladulla on the Princes Highway down south.”

As of 1pm on Monday, traffic congestion is easing on the Princess Highway in Milton and Nowra but now building between Waterfall and Engadine.

The hunter region southbound traffic along the Pacific Highway is busy now towards Hexham Bridge and its also building at the Great Western Highway near Blackheath.

Traffic is building in Nowra in the state's south. Picture: Live Traffic NSW

Conditions on the M1 near Mount Kuring-gai coming towards Sydney and Somersby to Mt White is also starting to build as motorists return home.

Congestion has cleared on the Castlereagh Highway near Melrose Rd just south of Mudgee after a car crash.

Holiday-makers leaving the NSW south coast will be hit with significant traffic delays. Picture: Live Traffic NSW

The highway was closed in both directions and motorists were being advised to use diversions and allow for extra time.

“If you are travelling from Sydney to Mudgee use the Diversion at Ilford using the Bylong Valley Road,” Live Traffic NSW said.

“If you are travelling from Mudgee to Sydney use the diversion from Rocky Watehole Road through to Rylstone.”

The driver was treated by paramedics for non-life-threatening injuries.

And for those taking the skies, roughly 130,000 people are expected to pass through Sydney Airport as interstate travellers begin their rush home.

With light winds and clear skies weather related delays should be minimal.

“Heavy traffic is also expected around Sydney Airport with delays expected at Southern Cross Drive and O’Riordan Street.,” Mr Weeks said.

It comes after a horror Easter weekend on Australia’s roads, claiming the lives of at least 17 people and sparking urgent warnings from the nation’s police.

In the most recent fatality in NSW, a man died after his ATV rolled in the Lake Macquarie area.

Paramedics were called to a fire trail on Crown Land in Cooranbong just before 7pm on Sunday following reports a two-seater ATV had crashed.

The passenger - a 35-year-old man - was treated by NSW Ambulance paramedics; however, he died at the scene.

The driver a - 30-year-old man – was taken to John Hunter Hospital in a critical condition.

It came hours after a 69-year-old driver died in a fatal collision just after 2.15pm on Sunday, after the man’s car collided with a tree on Edwardstown Rd, South Gundagai in the Riverina region.

Torrential rain expected for east coast triggers weather warnings, flood watch for Sydney and NSW and Queensland rivers

A weather map showing heavy rain forecast over eastern Australia.

A major rain event is engulfing most of eastern Australia for   the next 48 hours, prompting the Bureau of Meteorology (BOM) to issue flood watches from southern Queensland to the NSW South Coast.

Greater Sydney could be soaked by up to 200 millimetres from late Thursday to early Saturday, potentially leading to major flooding along the Hawkesbury-Nepean River, while Brisbane and Canberra also face the prospect of heavy rain.

The sudden shift after recent warm and dry weather is due to polar air moving north meeting a humid tropical airstream off the Tasman and Coral seas, a pattern seen numerous times during 2022 — Sydney's wettest year on record.

Rainband forming over southern Queensland to track south

The clash of tropical and polar air had already led to a thickening cloudband on Thursday over southern Queensland and northern NSW.

Falls of 100mm are possible south of a line from about Blackall to Roma to Brisbane , including the NSW Northern Rivers and far northern slopes and ranges.

The rainband will then broaden across NSW on Friday as an inland trough of low pressure deepens, however a second trough will also form along the coastline, leading to torrential falls in the east from southern Queensland to the Victorian border.

Later on Friday, a low-pressure system could even form around Sydney that would further intensify rainfall overnight, including peak three hourly totals in excess of 50mm from Greater Sydney to the southern coast and ranges.

"The heaviest rain and strongest winds are likely to be tied to wherever that low may develop but there is still an element of uncertainty," Miriam Bradbury from the BOM said.

The rainband will then contract to south-east NSW on Saturday, although pockets of heavy rain from thunderstorms are still possible this weekend right along the eastern seaboard up to Cape York Peninsula

Modelling currently indicates an average of 50mm to 200mm from Brisbane to the Victoria border and north into the Queensland's Central West, however, the nuances of such a complex system will result in localised heavier totals.

A frequent result of a moist onshore flow over Australia's east is enhanced uplift due to the close proximity of the Great Dividing Range to the coast – it would therefore be no surprise to see pockets closer to or even exceeding 300mm.

Widespread flood risk including Sydney and the Hawkesbury

While this event may not technically meet East Coast Low (ECL) thresholds due to the possible absence of a closed circulation near the coast, the set-up is essentially identical with humid maritime air clashing with an inland cold pool to lower the surface pressure.

The similarity to an ECL this week ensures the impacts will be nearly as severe, although the rain should be mobile enough to prevent record or near record flooding, as opposed to an ECL's slow movement capable of producing several days of torrential rain.

The main concern from this system is flooding, as the amount of rain predicted should easily be enough to generate rapid river rises, especially in areas where totals exceed around 100mm.

"Rainfall of this magnitude can quickly lead to flash flooding, cutting off our roads, making them impassable and blocking our drainage systems, we may also see riverine flooding developing through Friday," Ms Bradbury said.

The BOM has issued an initial minor flood warning for the Wilson's River at Lismore in northern NSW.

Heavy rain and thunderstorms in the catchment could see minor flooding in the town from Thursday evening.

A flooded river carrying sticks, plants and debris.

A number of hinterland communities near Lismore also became isolated on Thursday as heavy rains swelled creeks and flooded causeways.

Flooding has closed the Newell highway 30 kilometres south of Boggabilla in the state's far north.

The Highway is a major freight link between southern Queensland and Victoria through central NSW.

Emergency services have responded and are monitoring conditions.

Nashua, in Byron Shire, copped 219mm of rain in the 24 hours to 9am on Thursday morning.

A flood watch has also been issued for many rivers from the Condamine-Balonne to the Gwydir, including the risk of major flooding along the Hawkesbury-Nepean where a near full Warragamba Dam will be unable to hold back flows.

For Western Sydney, a major flood would follow three previous major floods through 2021 to 2022, culminating in the highest river levels in more than 40 years.

Another flood continues the recent shift to a rain dominate period after a three-decade hiatus in floods through Western Sydney from 1990 to 2021.

Flooding is also possible from Friday along creeks and rivers through Metropolitan Sydney, including the Parramatta River.

Strong winds and big surf to pound coast

The lowering pressure during the coming days will additionally strengthen winds and increase seas and swells.

Even with the absence of an ECL, which can bring gusts well above 100kmh, strong winds could eventuate with damaging gusts to around 90kmh, most likely late  on Friday and early Saturday along the southern and central NSW coast.

Forecast for large winds and strong winds.

While winds are unlikely to reach typical gale force ECL speeds, power outages are still possible as heavy rain softens the soil and heightens the risk of trees coming down in gusty winds.

The strong winds will also whip up huge waves — combined seas and swells should rise to 4 metres south from the Hunter, generating maximum waves closer to around 8m.
