CBD-infused drink by TRIP

Come 2023, CBD is no longer a term coined with a bad rep in the UK. But the storyline wasn’t quite how it is today a mere 4 years ago in 2019, when TRIP , UK’s best selling CBD brand, launched.

The brand has come a long way since then. According to the recently published NielsenIQ Soft Drinks Total Market Value Sales report in February 2023, TRIP has grown 522% over the last 12 months, making it the fastest growing soft drinks brand in the UK, with a market share of over 88% in CBD drinks and over 50 million impressions on TikTok and Instagram in January 2023 alone.

With backgrounds in law and finance respectively, the cofounders — and married couple — Olivia Ferdi and Daniel Khoury, ditched their city jobs to establish the result-driven, mould-breaking business after Khoury discovered the healing power of CBD following his speedy recovery from a surgery for sports injury.

Noticing the void in the market for quality CBD products that promotes wellness by reducing stress, with a brand image that’s joy-inspiring and clean, Gen Z/millennial-facing and customer-friendly, Ferdi and Khoury were quick to their journey knowing there was a huge community of consumers who all yearned for the benefits of the particular derivative of cannabis. Eight months after the couple pooled their savings, TRIP was officially born.

Cofounders of TRIP

Since then, TRIP has introduced millions of people to their first CBD experience and today represents a new, functional consumer category that did not exist previously. “I believe a huge part of our success is down to our personal experience that led to this journey,” says Ferdi, who admits that she “certainly had no plans to leave law for entrepreneurship” — not least to run a business with her husband — but the passion they felt after their personal experiences “was all encompassing.”

Ahead of the market, Ferdi and Khoury’s ballsy move in diving into an industry filled with the unknown was led by strong instinct, thanks to the cofounders’ personal journey and their newness to the sphere of FMCG (Fast-Moving Consumer Goods) — “that naivety allowed us to be led by passion and the mission — sometimes, above all logic!” Shares Ferdi, who also considers what quickly followed in 2020 — namely the global pandemic and its subsequent impact on the macroeconomics and people’s perception on health and mental wellness — created “a perfect storm” where TRIP’s exponential growth was fuelled and nurtured.

The largest study of the most recent data in the UK shows that in 2019, 16-to-25-year-olds were the most likely to be teetotal, with 26% not drinking, compared to the least likely generation (55-to-74-year-olds). With 1 in 2 Gen Zers having tried a CBD drink, the demand for TRIP, and the category it’s in, will only continue to surge.

A self-proclaimed “huge believer in connectivity and trusting the process,” Ferdi recalls the many serendipitous moments during TRIP’s growth. “One of the most unexpected was...that the Queen was selling TRIP in her Windsor Estate! The headline ( Daily Mail ) referred to people bulk buying TRIP, we couldn’t believe it. We had no idea we were even stocked there until journalists from publications all over the globe were ringing us for comment one Saturday morning.” Talk about unexpected publicity.

“There are so many wonderful stories filled with unexpected people and moments that have meaningfully shaped what the brand is today.” Ferdi adds.

TRIP CBD oil, and TRIP CBD infused drinks

Describing the brand’s core value, both Ferdi and Khoury agrees that “TRIP believes in helping create moments of calm in the everyday chaos.” Having both worked stressful jobs in the past and suffered from anxiety like many of the general working public, the cofounders are quick to acknowledge the importance of making space and time for yourself, and that “there is no true good health without good mental health.”

Dedicating resources to launch campaigns on mental health awareness even during the business’ early growth stage during the pandemic, TRIP continues to support its community by encouraging conversations and eliminating the negative connotation linked to the once-stigmatized topic. “It’s super important to me as a brand owner now. With a team of 40 bright young people I’m really keen to ensure they feel supported while thriving in a fast-paced environment.”

Known for creating “Canned Calm”, TRIP also partnered with the meditation app Calm to provide free memberships to customers . “This is exciting for us — understanding that an accessible £2 TRIP drink can be a first step, a conversation starter for someone to consider their wellbeing and then potentially incorporate other tools into their daily routine.”

Olivia Ferdi and Daniel Khoury, cofounders of TRIP

Ferdi and Khoury lead in a generation of young entrepreneurs with a whole new mindset evolved long past the traditional Wall Street model. They are highly educated (TRIP’s cofounders are both graduates of Cambridge University), assured of their choices, have a clear goal in mind that’s change, rather than profit, driven, and ultimately value kindness and social responsibility equally as, or even above many traditional indicators of what a successful business should be. Working as business partners, the couple say they are now “together pretty much 24/7” and it’s only made possible as “TRIP...feels more like a fun exciting passion project.”

“As such career-focused people we not only understand each other’s priorities and drive, but also have huge admiration for each other, while still feeling like university sweethearts.”

Speaking of the next steps for TRIP, following the brand’s recent high profile partnerships in the US and France, Ferdi and Khoury are quick to respond. “We’ve created a category here in the UK, with TRIP sold in over 15,000 stores with 88% of the market share of CBD drinks, yet it feels like we’re just getting started! Unfortunately people nationwide feel stress every day, and each day can look a little different — at TRIP we hope to continue to innovate and create the perfect CBD product to help you manage your stress — deliciously, conveniently — wherever you may need it. Each experience of stress is equally valid, and we’ll continue to create authentically functional products to meet those needs as our community’s needs evolve.”

TRIP’s CBD oil and drinks are now available at www.drink-trip.com , via Deliveroo app in the UK, and in Soho Houses around the world in addition to other retailers and supermarkets.

Olivia Ferdi trip Founder (1)

How Olivia Ferdi took CBD drinks brand Trip on its long journey

By Niamh Leonard-Bedwell 2022-10-20T15:43:00+01:00

The Trip co-founder began taking CBD to ‘take the edge off’. Three years later, her company has 88% of the market and investors want a slice

Olivia Ferdi’s recollection of her anxiety-inducing commute will strike a chord with most Londoners.

“People are jostling and getting very aggressive,” she remembers. “You’re literally queuing to get on the Tube with people huffing and puffing… You get to your desk and your shoulders are hunched, your whole body’s tense”.

So unpleasant was the experience that Ferdi, then working as a lawyer, started taking CBD to “take the edge off”. Today, she’s at the helm of a booming business that holds 88% share of the UK CBD drinks market.

Founded in 2019, Trip quickly drew attention with its pastel-branded CBD oils and drinks. They are now listed in 11,000 stores, including Sainsbury’s, Holland & Barrett , Boots , Ocado , Selfridges and Harrods, as well as hospitality chains such as The Ivy, Brewdog , Leon and Benugo.

In August, the business secured a £10m investment to fuel further growth, having already seen sales rise 500% year on year in the first half of 2022. The company’s aim is to make Trip – and the concept of a CBD drink – truly mainstream.

As Ferdi’s commute illustrates, the motivation behind founding Trip was highly personal. The same is true for her husband and co-founder Daniel Khoury. In 2018, he suffered a football injury and underwent knee surgery just weeks before their wedding. On the advice of his brother, who had heard of athletes using CBD for recovery, Khoury started using it topically and taking it as a supplement.

By the time of their big day, Khoury’s health had improved remarkably. Having been reliant on crutches post-op, he was “dancing all weekend long” and “carrying me on his shoulders”, says Ferdi. “It was bonkers.”

Name: Olivia Ferdi

Employment history: After graduating from Cambridge University, I worked as a lawyer at Allen & Overy and then moved to unicorn-tech company Farfetch. In my last year at Farfetch I discovered CBD was the perfect solution to the daily stress and burnout I felt as a lawyer. Alongside my husband, we decided to leave our careers to launch Trip and help millions of people find calm through CBD.

Career highlight: Seeing Trip on shelf for the first time – a real pinch-me moment!

Best piece of advice received: Life begins when you step out of your comfort zone.

Business idol: Michael Acton Smith, founder of meditation app Calm.

Blown away by Khoury’s miraculous recovery, “we dove into researching CBD,” says Ferdi. “We’d never heard of it, and didn’t have any experience with it.”

She wasn’t alone in her inexperience. At the time, there was also little public knowledge of the ingredient, which is derived from the cannabis plant but non-psychoactive. Ferdi soon realised most products on the market were intimidating for newbies. “Back in 2018, so much of it was in quite a tricky format… a dark brown bottle covered in big green leaves was not something I could pull out at my desk.”

By contrast, Trip’s pastel hues were far more accessible – and served to attract shoppers. “You can’t make health claims about CBD, so it was through the pastel aesthetic that we were able to communicate to people…and bring them into our brand’s world.”

Plus, in contrast to the herbal tinctures that dominated the market at the time, Trip’s drinks offered a single-serve option, which “was something we thought could be really exciting”.

Luckily for Ferdi, retailers agreed. Within a month of Trip’s launch, it had secured a Planet Organic listing and entered talks with Selfridges. It was the vote of confidence Ferdi needed to put her legal career on hold. By this point, Khoury had already left his job in finance.

“We put all our savings into it,” says Ferdi. “We just felt so passionately about how many benefits we’d felt from our own experience with CBD and how much this could be helpful for so many people.”

They soon expanded Trip’s range with a line of CBD oils. Then the pandemic hit, and demand rocketed. Ferdi says DTC sales rose 420% month on month in April 2020. A month later, Trip struck a partnership with Deliveroo to deliver to locked-down shoppers.

A Sainsbury’s listing followed in October. Trip was the first CBD brand to join Sainsbury’s Future Brands incubator programme, and according to Ferdi, the retailer is an “incredible partner”.

The pandemic – and resulting conversations around mental health – fuelled demand for a proposition such as Trip, Ferdi explains. Suddenly people were talking “about their wellbeing in the workplace, or in their family WhatsApp groups”, she says. Drinking Trip can now serve as a “conversation starter” for mental health, she adds.

This word of mouth has been key to Trip’s success. On social media, fans of the brand have posted positive reviews, which has been “a hugely impactful part of our growth”, says Ferdi.

Meal deals and coffee shops

Looking forward, Ferdi plans to use the brand’s £10m funding to go even more mainstream. Trip is looking to boost its distribution into “all the places you may ever need it”, including your “morning coffee shop, grab-and-go outlet and where you get your meal deal”.

It’s also looking to expand internationally. To do so, it’s planning to build a dedicated team in France, “where we’ve been building some exciting momentum in retail” (a recent LinkedIn post showed Ferdi excitedly announcing a Carrefour listing).

There, the team will sidestep the logistical challenges involved in running the business from the UK, and also adapt to the French market, where “the vocabulary around health is different and the vocabulary around stress is different”.

Here in the UK, Ferdi is equally enthused. She is encouraged by the regulation of the CBD market by the Food Standards Agency, which has published an online directory of CBD products that have taken the first step towards approval.

Despite some teething errors with the original list, it was an important move for the category, says Ferdi. “I’m biased as a lawyer as I love the law and regulation. But the regulation is designed to support food safety and the best quality products for us … it does none of us any good if someone has a bad experience.”

And she isn’t afraid of the competition that comes with CBD’s growing legitimacy. “We are passionate about making sure consumers can find the best quality products on shelf. If we can’t support that, we can’t keep doing the work we’re doing to make Trip accessible and to destigmatise it and bring it mainstream.”

Co-Founder of TRIP, the UK’s fastest growing soft drinks brand, explains how the brand is on a mission to destigmatise the conversation around mental health using CBD wellness.

TRIP

TRIP was launched by Olivia Ferdi and Daniel Khoury after a personal experience with CBD, and first hit supermarket shelves in 2019

Founded by wife-and-husband duo Olivia Ferdi and Daniel Khoury after a personal experience with CBD, TRIP first hit supermarket shelves in 2019.

Having never heard of CBD previously, Daniel was recovering from a football accident that required knee surgery, just weeks before their wedding. He tried CBD oil after being told that he wouldn’t be able to walk down the aisle and was amazed to see his pain and inflammation reduced. Within seven weeks he made a miraculous recovery in time for their wedding and was dancing, crutches-free all weekend long!

Blown away, the pair dove into research about CBD and learnt that CBD had recovery benefits but was in fact most frequently used for daily stress and wellbeing. Working as a lawyer, Olivia struggled with burnout and anxiety and looking for a solution, she began using CBD everyday. It was transformational for everyday stress – but back in 2018 there were very few products available. The only products out there had confusing product information, unappealing formats or flavours and packaging that she didn’t feel comfortable having on her desk at work.

Facing these challenges, they knew that they could help so many more people benefit from the stress-relieving benefits experienced; and create something high quality and relevant for today’s consumers.  So moved by their experience, Daniel and Olivia pooled their savings and left their careers in finance and law, to dedicate their time in creating the TRIP range.

TRIP

Founders of TRIP, Olivia Ferdi and Daniel Khoury, first started working on TRIP on 2018 before its launch in 2019.

Since then, Olivia and Daniel have introduced millions of people to their first CBD experience and today represents a new, functional consumer category that did not exist previously, supporting everyday health, well-being and stress relief. TRIP is the UK’s number one CBD brand according to Nielsen and the fastest growing soft-drinks brand in the UK, owning 88 percent of the CBD drinks market in the UK (Nielsen).

Getting a CBD beverage to market in the UK

Olivia and Daniel put their personal savings together to launch TRIP and left their corporate careers. Passionate about creating something to bring millions of people the mental stress relief they had experienced, TRIP was launched in 2019.

TRIP’s brand vision is central to its viral success, its aesthetic and calming visuals are recognisable across advertising to every touch point on the product. Co-Founder Olivia designed the can herself and knew that a playful memorable name, together with the product packaging would be instrumental in the mission to destigmatise the conversation around mental health using CBD wellness.

Convincing nationwide retailers of CBD’s health benefits and the significant community already supporting TRIP online, TRIP was on shelves where no CBD product had previously existed. Stockists currently include Sainsburys, Boots, Ocado, Waitrose, Asda, as well as premium partners such as Selfridges and Soho House. In fact, the beverage is now sold as a daily item in meal deals across the UK in Leon, Benugo and Sainsburys.

Causing a calming frenzy

The entire TRIP team takes great pride in the TRIP community, a group of millions of people who have enjoyed a TRIP product and shared their personal stress or anxiety journey. Whether dealing with cramps, to poor sleep, to pain or social anxiety, millions of people have found ways to support their wellbeing and find immense relief.

FDA says new regulatory pathway is needed for CBD products

TRIP advocates to destigmatise CBD and conversations around mental health, with co-founder Olivia believing that there is no true health without good mental health.

A significant milestone in 2023 has been the announcement of the TRIP partnership with Calm, an app for mindfulness and meditation. Partnering with a world leading brand for mental health signals the brand work TRIP has been doing in this space, especially delivering what we call “canned calm”.

Consuming CBD “all day every day”

TRIP beverages can be consumed all day every day. Our Cold Brew Coffee is great for a caffeine kick to start the day or pre workout, whereas our lightly sparkling drinks can be consumed to reset when the afternoon slump hits. TRIP is sociable and can be enjoyed anytime, solo and as an alcohol alternative.

TRIP

TRIP drinks are sold in a variety of flavours in stores across the UK. The company also sells CBD oil.

Getting great sleep is essential for good days. We have unique botanical blends of stronger CBD in our CBD drops, using chamomile to help destress. Taking a few drops of CBD first thing in the morning to keep stress at bay, then also in your wind down before bedtime – can really help calm racing thoughts and help you drift into sleep. It doesn’t make you sleepy or drowsy, but CBD helps you feel less stressed and more relaxed – which can really help with deeper sleep.

A drink for all times of day

For the tens of millions of people that we’ve introduced to CBD, it’s incredible to hear how different people use it. In the last couple of years we’ve seen a step change in our Gen Z community, who we think choose TRIP as the way to unwind instead of alcohol. In fact, among Gen Z (the most likely age group to be teetotal) one in two have now tried a CBD drink, according to KAM Media .

Millions already find calm through the functionality of CBD drinks and this has been clear on social media, where TRIP has gone viral, with over 50 million impressions on TikTok and Instagram last month alone. On TikTok “#anxiety” has 26 billion views, meaning it makes sense to us that our social community is driving TRIP growth by sharing their personal experiences of how our drinks can reduced their stress and anxiety.

At the same time, the UK is more stressed than ever before and TRIP’s unique blend of CBD and natural adaptogens has the potential to aid stress, reduce anxiety, improve sleep & support the immune system and our natural adaptogens (ginseng, L-theanine & chamomile) help aid digestion & immunity. TRIP’s mission is the share calm in the everyday chaos, and destigmatise conversations around mental wellbeing globally.

From the first sip, our community reported feeling instantly more relaxed, with 93 percent of people stating that TRIP helps them manage their stress & anxiety. This led TRIP to become a mental wellbeing resource helping people through products that cater to daily stress.

Tripping into the future

As a company we believe that TRIP is here to help consumers create calm in those everyday moments of chaos. In the future we want to be available for consumers whenever they made need us in whatever format they want to reach whether that in the back of an Uber, in an office building or in local supermarkets.

About the author

Olivia Ferdi is the Co-Founder of TRIP. She began using CBD to manage the everyday stresses of her career as a lawyer. After loving the results but hating the bitter tastes and inconvenient formats, Olivia decided she wanted to create something better – eventually leaving careers in law and finance to create TRIP.

Tiny Little Changes

Trip Drinks Review: Is This Botanical Beverage Worth It?

Trip Drinks

Right now, I suspect I am an advertiser’s dream when it comes to soft drinks – especially anything with interesting added ingredients and health benefits. I no longer drink alcohol , so am always in the market for interesting new “grown up drinks” – which is why I’ve already reviewed so many for this site.

As is often the case, I discovered Trip’s range of “CBD Infused” drinks via a targeted ad on Facebook. I was intrigued enough to put in an order, and in this Trip Drinks review, I let you know my views on the whole range.

I’m always excited to try out new drinks, but I only tend to order them more than once if they really impress – especially as so many new products are coming out at the moment.

To find out whether Trip Drinks got a second order from me, you’ll have to read on.

NOTE: I’ve now also written a Trip CBD Oil review .

What Are Trip Drinks?

Trip Drinks is a range of healthy soft drinks infused with CBD, and a range of natural botanicals including lemon balm and ginseng. Although it’s a relatively new range, it has gathered considerable momentum already, with positive praise from the likes of Forbes, Vogue and The Guardian.

Sold as a product that can help you to “find your calm amidst the every day chaos,” the drinks are among many products currently hitting the market that incorporate natural, herbal ingredients that have various health and anti-anxiety benefits.

Trip CBD infused peach and ginger drink

What is In Trip Drinks?

Trip drinks have a base of water and natural fruit juice concentrates. They’re naturally sweetened with steviol, an ingredient many health-conscious people (myself included) prefer to chemicals like aspartame and sucralose.

The interesting part is the added botanical ingredients, and the inclusion of a small dose of CBD (cannabidiol) – a non-psychoactive ingredient derived from the cannabis plant.

CBD is all the rage these days, with many fans (again, myself included), who report benefits such as a greater sense of calm, reduced anxiety, and less pain and inflammation.

Here’s a quick run-down of all the botanicals included in Trip drinks, along with their perceived benefits. I must emphasise that these are benefits they are widely thought to have. I’m not making any medical claims here – this is a personal blog, not a scientific paper.

CBD : This increasingly popular ingredient is a massive deal these days. It’s often used as a natural remedy for anxiety, for lots of pain-related conditions such as arthritis and neuropathy, and to relieve nausea. It does NOT get you “high,” in case you’re wondering! To find out more about it, check out this guide from Harvard University .

Lemon Balm: Lemon balm is from the mint family, and people have long believed it to promote relaxation and to aid in many ailments. These include headaches, nausea and menstrual cramps. This Healthline article discusses several studies into those claims.

Lemon Balm Plant

Ginseng: This is a supplement that has been used for centuries, and is particularly popular in China and Korea. It is thought to help with everything from cognitive function to blood sugar levels. That said, there is limited medical evidence for these long-believed claims.

L-Theanine : L-Theanine is an amino acid that naturally occurs in tea. It’s said to be good for memory and clarity, and many people believe it’s a good compliment to caffeine. I am one of those people, as it seems to “take the edge” off the jittery buzz. (L Theanine is also found in Three Spirit’s Non Alcoholic Spirits range – reviewed here – where I have particularly noticed that positive effect).

Chamomile: Most of us are familiar with chamomile tea. It’s a hugely popular ingredient to promote sleep and relaxation.

Turmeric: The only Trip drink that includes turmeric is the peach and ginger variety. As well as giving the drink a striking orange colour, turmeric is seen (particularly in India) as a medicinal herb, used for everything from hayfever to depression and itching. As with the ginseng, there isn’t yet much in the way of peer-reviewed evidence to support these beliefs.

Trip Drinks Review: Flavour By Flavour

In a moment, we’ll move on to the “effects” of Trip drinks, and discuss whether you notice any tangible benefits. But first, let’s look at something that’s arguably more important – what they taste like.

Trip Lemon Basil Drink

This particular drink provides exactly what it says on the can. It’s probably the most “herbal” of the three in terms of both aroma and flavour. It tastes of lemon, and it tastes of basil – so I guess we can say “mission accomplished!”

The flavour is in perfect balance, and it’s an agreeable herbal taste, not a nasty Jägermeister-like herbal taste!

I’m not convinced it would appeal to everybody, but I enjoy it very much.

VERDICT: 8/10

Trip Elderflower Mint

Until I tried Trip drinks, I had no idea that I would enjoy a drink that tastes – frankly – like Wrigley’s Spearmint chewing gum. It really does!

That may sound a bit odd, but it’s genuinely not a bad thing. I have to confess that I can’t taste much in the way of elderflower, but the overall flavour is really good. This is probably my favourite of the three.

VERDICT: 9/10

Trip Peach Ginger

The Peach Ginger is the one that includes turmeric, and as you can see from the photo near the top of this review, it gives the drink a very bright orange colour.

Flavour-wise it’s a strong ginger, but not an overly spicy ginger. It’s very refreshing, although the ginger overpowers the peach a little. It’s a mouth-filling taste, with a fresh aroma. I don’t know if it’s possible for something to “smell healthy,” but it kind of does.

Trip Drinks

I’m going to have to disappoint the hedonists reading this by saying that if you’re expecting Trip drinks to blast you into the stratosphere, you’re going to be sorely disappointed!

Despite the “Trip” name, these are very much a wellbeing product, and any “effects” will be subtle at best. Let’s be realistic, folks, they sell these in Sainsbury’s!

However, I like to test products throughly, and with an open mind. With that ethos, I drank several of these before creating my Trip Drinks review. I did so at times when I could have a good chance to really focus in on whether I “noticed anything,” such as when I was about to sit down for a period of uninterrupted work.

I first want to talk about the CBD. Something I’ve not revealed until now is that I am a regular (daily) user of CBD. I find it enormously helpful for my anxiety and general state of mind. I am strongly considering setting up a separate site to discuss it, and to review the products I use.

With that in mind, I do (for fear of sounding conceited) know a LOT about CBD. And one thing I know is that the dose of CBD needed to feel positive effects can vary wildly from person to person. I also know that – for most – the 15mg “dose” in a can of Trip is a pretty small one.

This is compounded by the bioavailability of CBD when you eat or drink it. That sounds awfully technical, but it essentially relates to how much of the substance is actually absorbed by the body. Some estimates are that it is as low as 4%.

This is why I vape my CBD, as it’s a much more “bioavailable” method of taking it. And I use much bigger doses than 15mg! That’s very much another story, but my point is that the 15mg dose in Trip (and, indeed, in almost every CBD drink on the market) is probably too low to really do much for many people.

This by no means implies that there’s anything disingenuous about the product or its marketing. All I’m saying is not to expect miracles, nor to assume CBD does nothing for you if this is the first and only such product you try.

The Other Botanical Ingredients

The other herbal ingredients in Trip are a blend intended to promote stress relief, relaxation and better digestion. I’ve tried most of them before – alone or in other products – at various times.

I have to say I was intrigued by the presence of chamomile. It’s something usually seen as a bedtime supplement, so I was concerned Trip would make me sleepy. Thankfully it didn’t.

I’ve generally been having a can of Trip mid afternoon. This is when I’d often reach for a second can of Diet Coke – a decision I frequently regret afterwards because it leaves me feeling washed-out and jittery.

Drinking Trip Lemon Basil at my Computer

Drinking Trip doesn’t suddenly make me feel “different.” It’s not like when I vape CBD, which can provide a really notable sense of calm, and a slowdown of racing thoughts. However, I do tend to feel focussed and quite “zen” after drinking Trip. It may be placebo, to an extent, but millions of people believe in these ingredients, and have done for hundreds of years.

My digestion has also been very good since I’ve been drinking these regularly. However, I should say that digestion doesn’t really give me much trouble anyway, since I quit drinking alcohol!

All in all, I have a “what’s not to like?” perception of these drinks. They taste good, they seem healthy, and they are clearly a better choice than more Diet Coke while I’m sitting at my desk.

I couldn’t swear that my focus and level of calm would be any different without them – but that goes for every supplement and health product out there!

Ingredients, Calories and Nutrition

Whenever I do a drinks review, I like to have a good look at the ingredients and nutritional information.

There’s nothing in Trip Drinks that seriously worries me. There’s water (it doesn’t specify spring water), fruit juices from concentrates, the CBD and botanicals, and steviol glycosides as the sweetener. One addition that many of the drinks I review do without is erythritol, a flavour enhancer – just so you know!

The drinks are 20 calories per can , so not much to concern you there. They are also vegan, and have no added sugar.

One thing that’s a bit of a shame is that other than the CBD, Trip don’t tell us the quantities of the ginseng, L-Theanine etc. That’s quite common in products like this, and presumably they don’t want to give away the trade secrets. However, it does leave you wondering how “meaningful” a quantity of those ingredients you’re consuming.

Presentation

I only include a presentation section in these reviews when there’s something positive to say. While the presentation didn’t blow me away as much as when I did my review of Jukes Coridalities , the drinks do come in a nice box with a leaflet, when you buy a small mixed case. This is shown in the earlier photos.

Ethics and Eco Credentials

Trip Drinks come with 100% recyclable packaging, and everything is made in the UK.

I always find it interesting to see what these “craft” brands do to contribute to wider society. While I didn’t see anything on the website about charity initiatives or donations, the company does offer some discounts – for healthcare workers, key workers, and 18-25s.

This is a great initiative, and it follows the lead of lots of US-based CBD businesses, which are generally a little more evolved than those here in the UK.

Trip discounts

As we near the end of this Trip Drinks review, we come to the all important question of price.

As with many things, the price goes down for larger orders. If you buy a case of 24 cans, this costs £39, which works out to £1.63 per can. If you buy a pack of six (which is also available as a mix with all three flavours), this costs £14 – or £2.33 per can.

I think the pricing is well pitched – it’s not cheap, but it’s not luck-pushingly expensive either. And plenty of artisan drink makers DO push their luck on price.

Trip Drinks Coupon Codes

Use can use the following code to make savings on drinks and other products from the Trip website:

Use code AFFTRIP15 here to save 15% on spends over £50

As I said at the start of my review, the way I truly judge a product is whether I buy it again after my initial order.

Well, I’m pleased to say I’m now on my second box of Trip Drinks, and I think they’re going to end up in my permanent rotation.

As somebody who doesn’t drink alcohol, it’s nice to have some alternatives in my armoury. I’m thankful to live in a time when there are SO many options, with more coming to the marketplace all the time.

Don’t expect some earth-shattering effect from the CBD and other ingredients. If you notice anything it will be subtle, not profound. However, they do seem to make me feel rather “zen.” They also have great flavour. They are pleasantly “different,” without being too weird to be enjoyable!

Recommended.

Where To Buy Trip Drinks

Trip drinks are available across the UK, and I’ve even seen them in my local Sainsbury’s – but the easiest place to get them is on the company’s website. Pleasingly, UK shipping is free, and the company also ships internationally.

15 thoughts on “Trip Drinks Review: Is This Botanical Beverage Worth It?”

This was a great review thank you. As someone who is looking to go alcohol free it’s lovely to see drinks on offer that can replace alcohol without having to order a lemonade!

Hi Lucy, You’ll find plenty of other alcohol-free alternatives on the site too 🙂

Best wishes,

Is anyone able to tell me how much turmeric is in one drink please?

I don’t know off hand Lisa, I’m afraid, but I will look on the can next time I have some in the house!

Thank you for your detailed review. It is really helpful to have such detailed insight. I do have an issue with their discount policy. I find the notion that only certain workers are “key” distasteful. Why are not factory workers processing food, or bus drivers, or indeed anyone providing a service key and thus entitled to a discount. The fact that they offer NHS workers and healthcare workers a 50% discount tells me the drinks are way over priced for everyone. Again thanks for your review on the content of the these drinks.

I am a recovering alcoholic.. are these safe for me, as obviously concerned about the CPD .. thank you as don’t think these are mind altering, plus it could be a good promotion 😉thank you

Hi Pat – I’m reluctant to give you a firm answer on that. I’ve been sober for over two years, and drink these as well as alcohol free beers and all kinds of similar things. But I know that some alcoholics find NA beers triggering – so no two people are the same. I don’t honestly THINK Trip would cause you a problem, and it certainly doesn’t make me feel “altered” – but everybody’s different. 🙂

Hi Ben, excellent article, thank you.

I’m interested in starting with CBD and your mention of a vaping solution intrigued me… Please can you let me know any recommendations you have in this area?

Hi Andy – If you’re in the UK, I’d suggest having a look at products from HighKind and Orange County CBD.

Thanks for this review. I’ll probably give these Trip drinks a trial based on what you’ve written. Thanks also for your other reviews. Reading them has eaten up a big chunk of my afternoon! I’ve been on the wagon since February and tried a few options: red wine (both went down well – down the sink that is); no alc gin (Gordon’s is OK but it’s just a herby drink really. I shove lots of ice, some fresh mint and tonic in there and pretend it’s a mojito). Beer is the most successful. I notice you didn’t mention (though you’ve probably sampled) Adnam’s Ghost Ship 0.5 (full flavoured with a slight citrus finish) and my favourite so far, Erdinger Alkoholfrei 0.5 (very much like a pilsner so softer on the palate). Thanks again for your encouraging, informative and well-written pieces.

Hi Jeff – thanks for reading and glad you’ve enjoyed my articles!

Yes, I’m familiar with the Ghost Ship and like it a lot, especially on the rare occasions when I find it on draft 🙂 The Erdinger is good too. Brookly Special Effects is one I’m particularly enjoying right now, along with Clear Head, from Bristol Brewery, which also donates money to mental health charities.

All the best, Ben

Ps. For non alcoholic gin, my wife and I have both been impressed with Tanqueray.

My husband is really struggling with anxiety at the moment and I was hoping these drinks might be the answer for him. However, you said about the dose not really being enough for most people. Vape isn’t something he would consider, are there any other alternatives that could be more successful?

I think anxiety is a huge problem for many people at the moment, especially those of us living through these grim times in the UK.

You could maybe start him off with Trip’s CBD oil , which will give a much stronger effect, and he will be able to experiment with the dosage. Here’s my affiliate link 🙂

It’s worth trying to use the code AFFTRIPCASH – which should give you 15% off spends over £35.

I’ve found CBD hugely helpful for anxiety – if nothing else it can help with sleep. However, it’s not a miracle cure. I’ve had some bad anxiety myself recently that CBD hasn’t been enough to fix – but I think it’s largely situational and being surrounded by such doom and gloom. It’s certainly worth a try!

All the best to you both.

Can you drink trip if you’re on warfarin

Hi Richard,

You would need to check that with your doctor. I cannot provide medical advice and I’m almost certain any CBD company would say the same.

Trip’s CBD products back on shelves in UK retailer following FSA guideline update scare

Health-food retailer Holland & Barrett was the only store to remove Trip's products following the FSA update.

Products from UK-based CBD brand Trip have been restocked in health-food retailer Holland & Barrett following their removal last week due to updated Food Standards Agency (FSA) guidelines.

The UK’s FSA reduced its recommended daily consumption limit of CBD from 70mg to 10mg. It said high consumption of CBD over a lifetime could heighten the risk of liver damage, somnolence (excessive tiredness) and thyroid issues.

This sparked concern with some retailers and Holland & Barrett reacted by temporarily removing Trip’s products from shelves.

A spokesperson for Holland & Barrett said: “as a responsible retailer we always act with our customers’ best interests at heart, which is why we temporarily removed some products from sale while our science, legal and independent advisors assessed the new guidance from the FSA.

“In line with the FSA’s direction, we have now developed advisory guidance, training for colleagues, online advice and information at shelf edge, meaning that customers can access the information they need when choosing which strength is right for them.”

Trip confirmed to Just Drinks that Holland & Barrett was the only store to remove its listings temporarily, which totalled 31 products.

A spokesperson for Trip said: “Not all CBD is created equal. The FSA updated recommended daily guideline of 10mg CBD dosage is based on a study of three lower grade ingredient samples, which does not include Trip’s CBD.”

They added: “This message is echoed by Trip’s retailer partners, who have been overwhelmingly supportive, retailers are clear that Trip is in full compliance with the regulation.”

The UK-based CBD brand was established in 2018 by Olivia Ferdi and her husband Dan Khoury after he suffered a knee accident that required surgery. The duo discovered CBD during his recovery process.

A privately held company, Trip does not provide publicly available sales and profit figures but claims to hold an 88% share of the CBD drinks market in Europe. Its products are stocked in 25,000 outlets in Europe, including Sainsbury’s, Boots and Harrods in the UK.

London-based membership organisation The Association For The Cannabinoid Industry (ACI) said the FSA’s guidance would not have any immediate impact on the UK’s list of licensed CBD products.

In a statement following the FSA update, the ACI said: “We urge retailers to take this as guidance, which it is. Nothing will change immediately in terms of products included on the FSA’s public list.”

CBD is a chemical compound found in the cannabis plant that has little or no psychoactive properties of tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), the cannabis compound that causes a “high” when consumed.

FSA CEO Emily Miles said at the time: “We understand that this change to our advice will have implications for products currently on the market that contain more than 10mg of CBD per serving. We will be working closely with industry to minimise the risk that consumers are not exposed to potentially harmful levels of CBD.”

LA CROSSE, Wis. — Convenience-store retailer Kwik Trip Inc. has debuted  cannabidiol (CBD)  products in select stores throughout Minnesota and Wisconsin, a spokesperson for the company told  CSP Daily News . The products include CBD-infused vape pens, topical rubs, tinctures and oral pouches.

The vape pens, topical rubs and tinctures are manufactured by Select CBD, Portland, Ore., a CBD oil producer, and the oral pouches are the flagship product of Cannadips, a division of Moorpark, Calif.-based tobacco provider Kretek International.

Consumers can find more information on Kwik Trip’s new CBD webpage , which addresses the difference between CBD and hemp, the legality of CBD, the difference between CBD and tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), the difference between full-spectrum and isolate CBD, and more.

C-store retailer Sheetz , drugstore chains  CVS  and  Walgreens , and grocery store Kroger  have also debuted CBD products.

Although CBD—the nonpsychoactive component of cannabis—has enjoyed rapid market growth due to its alleged medicinal qualities, there are still plenty of  questions  regarding its  safety and legality , causing concern and hesitation among retailers to get involved. To address these issues, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration has created a  working group  to spearhead the questions surrounding cannabis and CBD in food and beverages, the administration said during its  first public hearing  on the topic on May 31.

Kwik Trip is a family-owned convenience-store chain operating more than 600 locations in Wisconsin and Minnesota (under the Kwik Trip banner) and Iowa (under the Kwik Star banner).  The chain ranks No. 13  in  CSP’s  list of the largest c-store chains in the United States.

Is Publix closed on Easter? Where to shop this Sunday

trip cbd retailers

If you're planning to go grocery shopping or pick out a new outfit on the morning of Easter Sunday , you might be out of luck.

Those who put off their holiday shopping until the last minute might need to go a tad bit earlier in case their favorite retailers are closed this upcoming Sunday .

Below are things to know about Easter Sunday and a list of what stores are open and closed in Florida.

When is Easter 2024?

Easter Sunday in 2024  for churches on the Western calendar is on March 31.

For non-Orthodox Christians, Easter can  never occur before March 22 or later than April 25 , according to the  Astronomical Applications Department.

What is Easter? How is the date of Easter determined?

Easter marks the celebration of Jesus Christ's resurrection, serving as the culmination of Holy Week, which comprises several days, each carrying significance. These days include Palm Sunday, Holy Thursday, Good Friday and Easter Sunday.

As for the timing of the holiday, it varies from year to year. Easter falls on the first Sunday after the Paschal full moon, which is the first full moon occurring on or after March 21.

Why is Easter on a different date? We look to the moon for answers

In the year 325, the Council of Nicaea ordered a confusing situation of varying dates in different places by decreeing Easter should be celebrated on the first Sunday after the first full moon on or after the spring equinox. If that full moon falls on a Sunday, then Easter is the following Sunday.

The council's decree eventually became the standard.

Is Easter a federal holiday in the United States?

There are  12 federal holidays in the United States  in 2024. Easter, which is on a Sunday, is not a holiday on the list and is not typically observed as a holiday on a work day.

Is Publix open on Easter? What are Publix Easter hours?

Here's what stores are typically closed on Easter Sunday in Florida:

Unfortunately, you'll have to cancel your weekly Sunday trip to Publix on March 31. Along with Publix, here's what will be closed on Easter Sunday this year:

  • The Container Store
  • Hobby Lobby  (closed Sundays)
  • Joann Stores
  • Tractor Supply & Co

What stores are open Easter Sunday 2024 in Florida?

But if you did forget that crucial ingredient for your Easter Brunch or you just want some much-needed retail therapy after being with family all day, there's still several stores open. Here's where to go:

  • Academy Sports + Outdoors
  • Barnes & Noble
  • Bass Pro Shops
  • Bed Bath & Beyond
  • Bj's Wholesale Club
  • Dollar General
  • Dollar Tree
  • Family Dollar
  • Trader Joe's
  • Walmart  and Walmart Neighborhood Market
  • Whole Foods

Each full dropper of Trip's strong variety contains approximately 66mg of CBD. CBD dosage is an incredibly personal thing. 13. Trip Drinks Review: Is This Botanical Beverage Worth It?

If you buy a case of 24 cans, this costs £39, which works out to £1.63 per can. If you buy a pack of six (which is also available as a mix with all three flavours), this costs £14 - or £2.33 per can. I think the pricing is well pitched - it's not cheap, but it's not luck-pushingly expensive either.

  14. How to Take CBD Oil

    1. Under your tongue. CBD oil is most commonly used sublingually in a tincture — a concoction you use directly via a dropper or spray.
