Double Decker Living Root Bridge (65 km from Shillong)

You must have seen its pictures on the internet; this bridge has that kind of fame. This 3 km long living root bridge stands at a height of 2400 feet. People take a trek into the rainforest of Cherrapunji that normally takes 7 hours to reach the spot where this famed bridge is situated.

8. Mawlynnong Village

10 Places to Visit in Meghalaya for Nature Lovers

Meghalaya, in northeast India , used to be part of Assam . Known as the Abode of the Clouds, it's famous for being the wettest place on earth. This makes it a popular monsoon travel destination for those who love the rain. The majority of the state's population is made up of tribal people -- Khasis (the largest group), Garos, and Pnars -- who predominantly earn their living from cultivation. The state is divided into three main hills -- Khasi Hills (Central range), Garo Hills (Western range) and Jaintia Hills (Eastern range). Most tourist places are located in the Khasi Hills. Here's the pick of attractions.

Living Root Bridges

Possibly Meghalaya's most famous attraction , deep in the dense tropical forest and shrouded in cloud and rain for much of the year, are some astonishing man-made natural wonders known as living root bridges. Inventive members of the Khasi tribe have trained them to grow from the roots of ancient rubber trees, native to the northeast region. There are two places that you can see the bridges: near Cherrapunji and Mawlynnong.

In addition to having an easily accessible living root bridge nearby, scenic Mawlynnong village was named the "Cleanest Village in Asia" by a travel magazine. Also dubbed "God's Own Garden", the village is an outstanding example of community-based ecotourism. The locals have constructed a remarkable Sky View platform from bamboo atop the highest tree in the forest, nearly 80 feet up. It offers a bird's eye view of the village and panoramic view across to Bangladesh (the border is just a few kilometers away). Mawlynnong is a three hour drive south of Shillong in the East Khasi Hills. It's possible to stay there in a basic village guesthouse or house on stilts.

Dawki–Shnongpdeng

About an hour east of Mawlynnong, in the West Jaintia Hills, the border town of Dawki is worth visiting for its pristine emerald Umngot River. The absence of security makes it hard to believe that the International Radcliffe Line border between India and Bangladesh is situated there (and yes, locals from both sides do cross and intermingle). It's possible to go on a mesmerizing boat ride along the river, which is said to be one of the cleanest on earth. If driving from Mawlynnong to Dawki, do stop at magnificent Bophill Falls along the way. Shnongpdeng village, a short distance further on from Dawki, is the best place to stay.

In Meghalaya, there are waterfalls and there's Krang Suri. This small but stunning waterfall is tucked away near Jowai, about an hour northeast of Dawki and about three hours southeast of Shillong in the West Jaintia Hills. Be prepared to hike for around 20 minutes down a trail of steps to reach it. Entry tickets cost 50 rupees. It's possible to go swimming although you'll be told to wear a life-jacket. Changing rooms and toilets are provided.

Mawphlang Sacred Forest

Approximately 45 minutes southwest of Shillong in the East Khasi Hills, Mawphlang is home to a sacred plant grove of the Khasi tribe. It's full of medicinal plants. Tribe members also perform animal sacrifices and burn the bodies of their dead inside it. There's a Khasi Heritage Village next to the sacred forest, with different styles of mock tribal huts. If you're feeling energetic and want to spend a day out in nature, try the picturesque David Scott trail from Mawphlang to Lad Mawphlang. It's part of an old horse trail dating back to the British era.

Laitlum Canyon

Combine a day trip to Mawphlang Sacred Forest with Laitlum Canyon, where you'll feel like you've reached the end of the world. It's only an hour or so south of Shillong, and an hour and a half east of Mawphlang, in the East Khasi Hills. If you can tear yourself away from gazing across the open expanse of the gorge, it's possible to descend down a steep stairway to the village of Rasong. The 350 or so inhabitants of this remote village rely on a rustic cable pulley to transport food and other essential goods up and down the valley.

Meghalaya is the best destination for caving in India. There are more than 1,000 caves in the state, including the recently discovered longest sandstone cave in the world (Krem Puri in the Mawsynram region of the East Khasi Hills). The most frequently visited cave is Mawsmai, near Cherrapunji (two hours from Shillong). It's maintained as a show cave for tourists and is lit up all the way through. The Garden of Caves, near Laitmawsiang village on the way to Cherrapunji, is spectacular and has waterfalls. Arwah Cave can also be explored in the area and is known for its prehistoric fossils. Other caves are more challenging to visit and are suited to caving expeditions with appropriate caving equipment. These include Siju (a bat cave), Mawmluh (with a pool inside), Mawjymbuin (notable for its stalagmites) and Krem Dam (a long sandstone cave) near Mawsynram, and Liat Prah (the longest natural cave in India). Meghalaya Tourism has a list of caves in the state. The Meghalaya Adventurers' Association conducts week-long caving expeditions from Shillong.

Many mysterious monoliths can be found spread across Meghalaya's Khasi and Jaintia Hills, erected by the regions' tribes as a symbol of remembrance. However, the largest collection is located in the vicinity of Nartiang village in the Jaintia Hills, about two hours east of Shillong. This village used to be the summer capital of the Jaintia rulers and is a lesser-known tourist destination perfect for escaping the crowds. Some of the many monoliths there are up to 10 meters tall!

Mawryngkhang Bamboo Trek

Thrill seekers will love the new Mawryngkhang Trek, which opened in 2017. It starts out from Wahkhen village, about two hours south of Shillong in the East Khasi Hills, and will take you to the top of massive Mawryngkhang -- the legendary "King of Stones". The trail extends over a series of connected bamboo bridges built by locals and terrifyingly hugs the side of a huge sheer rock-face in part. Below is a deep gorge and river. Although the trek is quite easy and can be completed in two or three hours, definitely skip it if you're scared of heights! There aren't any accommodations in the area, so you'll have to return to Shillong or Cherrapunji the same day.

If you're a nature lover who really wants to get off the beaten track, then head to the densely forested Garo Hills in the western part of Meghalaya. This vast area is home to the Nokrek Biosphere Reserve, Siju Wildlife Sanctuary, and Balpakhram National Park. It's pristine and full of biodiversity, including hundreds of species of butterflies. Tura, the second largest town in the state after Shillong, has a helpful tourist office that can organize guides and trips.

In Shillong: Don't Miss Iewduh Bara Bazar

Regarded as one of the largest traditional-style markets in northeast India, this hectic and congested market in the heart of Shillong is where local Khasi women come to sell their fresh produce and livestock. You'll get some tasty local street food there too. The market is a fascinating place to walk through, especially if you're into street photography. It's open daily from 8 a.m. until 5 p.m. except on Sundays. (Go early in the morning if you want to avoid the crowds, otherwise brace yourself!)

Are you looking for the best tourist places in Meghalaya for an off the beaten path adventure?

Known as the abode of the clouds , Meghalaya consistently records some of the highest rainfall in the world. Along with the rains comes lush green landscape, plenty of waterfalls, large caves, and other natural wonders to explore.

19 Best Meghalaya Tourist Places & Landmarks

My partner is from this northeastern state and has taken me to many of these highlights so I can personally vouch for the magnificence of Meghalaya. My personal favorite thing to do was taking a rowboat ride in the clear waters of Shnongpdeng (even with the rough rocky drive down from Shillong).

Please note that some of these places are new to tourism so it’s important to be mindful and take all trash with you for proper disposal. Keep these beautiful places clean and green for locals and future visitors.

1. Shnongpdeng & the Umngot River

The Umngot River is off the beaten path but well worth the journey to see it. The village of Shnongpdeng is the best place to experience the river from. Dawki is the original place that made this river famous, but it’s more crowded so I highly recommend driving just a bit further to the peaceful village of Shnongpdeng.

The river is known for being crystal clear so you can each see through to the rocky bottom. There is a bridge you can cross to view it from above. You can also take a kayak out on your own or you can go in a rowboat that a guide rows and navigates. I did both to enjoy the river to its fullest after the long journey there.

Kayaking is nice to go at your own pace and sit out in the river to enjoy the views and get pictures, but you can’t go as far up the river on your own. The guides in the rowboats can take you further up stream to some cool rapids. The round trip is just under an hour and you can fit up to four people in the boat.

The clearness of the water depends on the weather so make sure to plan your visit outside of the rainy season. November to March are the months you are most likely to get a clear view of the river bottom .

The road from Shillong is 90 kilometers but it is unpaved in some parts and other parts are falling apart. As is unfortunately not uncommon in Meghalaya, it is in desperate need of roadwork and maintenance so plan for a slow drive as it takes time to navigate around the potholes. 

2. Double Decker Living Root Bridge 

The living root bridges are one of the most famous places to visit in Meghalaya . These bridges are hundreds of years old and made by the Khasi people by finessing tree roots into the structure of a bridge. To get to them, you’ll need to hike down to the village of Nongriat .

Tryna Village is the closest place you can drive to Nongriat and the starting point for the hike. You can pay a small parking fee to park in one of the small lots or along the road in Tryna. Or you can have a cab driver from Cherapunjee drop you off there. Just be aware that you’ll need to pre-arrange for that driver to come back at the end of the day to get you. Tryna is a small village with no public transport options.

The single decker living root bridge is about an hour hike down. From there you can continue onto the double decker living root bridge , which is another couple hours by foot. Be aware that being physically fit is necessary for this journey. Getting to the double decker root bridge is the easy part of the hike. For each stair you take down, remember you’ll need to walk back up it! 

As you approach the entrance to the hike there are locals offering walking sticks to rent. Have some rupees with you as you’ll definitely want to get a walking stick to assist you on the way back up.

Where to Stay Nearby

3. Rainbow Falls

If you are an advanced hiker, you can continue another hour past the Double Decker Living Root Bridge to Rainbow Falls . It’s important to start your hike early in the day to get to the falls before noon if you want the best chances of seeing a rainbow here.

If you want to see the falls in addition to the living root bridges and you don’t have amazing endurance, you can consider staying in the village of Nongriat for one night to break the hike down and back up into two days. There are some basic homestays in the village for the more adventurous. 

4. Mawlynnong

Mawlynnong is credited as the cleanest village in Asia . It has become a very popular destination in Meghalaya amongst tourists due to this honor and you’ll have to pay a fee to enter and walk around. There is a living root bridge and a balancing rock to see on your way through the village.

A visit to Laitlum Canyon provides dramatic views of a gorgeous green canyon. I recommend spending a couple hours here. You can walk along the rim for a while and then set up a picnic on a blanket to eat in the fields and enjoy the views. It’s near Shillong so can easily be visited on your stay there.

8. Mawphlang Sacred Forest

A short drive from Shillong, the Sacred Forest is located in the village of Mawphlang in the East Khasi Hills .

You can pay a small fee to have a guide walk you a short way into the forest and explain what the forest means to the local Khasi community (one of the three main tribes that make up Meghalaya’s rich cultural heritage). It won’t take more than an hour and is an easy walk, making this fun for all ages.

Jowai , located in the West Jaintia Hills (66 kms from Shillong) is the headquarters of the Jainta Hills district . It is a more “off the beaten path” destination that is up and coming for travelers in Meghalaya.

It’s a multi-day trip to visit this park and you’ll need to hire a driver with a 4×4 vehicle from Tura (170 kms from the park) to arrange it.

11. Wari Chora

Wari Chora is a small village in the Garo Hills , which are home to the nature-loving Garo tribe. It’s more than 360 kms from Shillong and can take more than 9 hours to drive there. Although gaining in popularity, this is a more remote destination in Meghalaya so plan accordingly.

The highlight of this special place is being able to kayak through a narrow canyon . You will need a guide to do this as it requires one hour of off road driving just to get to the start of a trail where it will take another hour to hike down to the river bed to start your kayaking journey.

This hidden gem is new to tourists so local homestays and campsites are the best places to stay nearby. If traveling from Shillong, it requires an overnight trip due the time it takes to get there. The nearest major town is Baghmara and the other closest village is Dabalgre, where you can find some accommodation options.

12. Krang Suri Falls

This waterfall is just 30 km from Jowai and 90 km from Shillong. It’s only a 15 minute walk from where you park to reach the falls. Unlike a lot of other waterfalls in Meghalaya you can actually swim here (though you’ll be required to rent a life vest). You also have the option to rent a rowboat. 

You can work in a stop here on your way to Shnongpdeng from Shillong to help break up the drive.

📍 Loomkyntoor Resort – this resort offers a good location for exploring Jowai and the nearby tourist places. There aren’t a lot of options in the area so you can’t be too picky. It’s less than 30 mins drive to Krang Suri Falls.

13. Tyrshi Falls

This step-tiered waterfall can be seen amongst other sights in the area. It’s just a quick drive off the main Jowai-Shillong Road and a short walk to the falls. It’s only 8 kms from Jowai and is a popular spot amongst locals.

For the more adventurous tourist, the David Scott Trail is a 16 km hiking trail that was once part of a 100km British-era trade route from Assam to Bangladesh. You can trek the full 100 kms in 4-5 days or take the 16 km trail from Mawphlang to Lad Mawphlang in about 5 hours.

15. Krem Liat Prah

The word ‘krem’ in the local Khasi language translates to cave. Krem Liat Prah is the longest natural cave in India , so long that experts are still mapping it! For now, there’s 34 kms mapped. Needless to say, a guide is required for tourists to explore this cave.

16. Krem Mawmluh Cave

17. Nartiang Monoliths

Getting Around Meghalaya

Shillong is a good base for travels around Meghalaya but to get to some of the best spots you’ll need to stay overnight in smaller towns and villages. You can take tourist taxis and sometimes public buses from Shillong to get to tourist destinations outside of town.

It is believed that once upon a time, Thlen, a massive demonic python, was terrorising the locality with its power and greed. 20. Rainbow Falls

Nestled amidst lush green hills, the trek to this waterfall is rocky and a little steep. You will, however, feel immense satisfaction when you reach the spot and take a dip in the gorgeous pool at the bottom, surrounded by big boulders. Make sure you carry dry food and water with you and try and stay for at least a night in the Nongriat Village, so that the trek doesn’t tire you out.

21. Khoh Ramhah

A mammoth and distinctly conical rock, Khoh Ramhah can arrest your attention instantly. As far as legends go, it is believed that the rock is essentially a fossilised basket owned by an evil spirit. Nonetheless, Khoh Ramhah is a famous viewpoint and looks magical when it’s misty or cloudy. On a clear day though, you might be able to catch a glimpse of Bangladesh from here. A stream flowing through the rock becomes a lively waterfall, which you can spot from the Sohra Shella Road. A 5-Day Guide To Witnessing The Best Of Meghalaya's Beauty

Separating the Assam valley from the neighbouring state of Bangladesh, Meghalaya —also known as the abode of clouds—is worth visiting for several reasons. This beautiful mountain state with its pine vegetation and snow clad peaks is home to some of the most fascinating waterfalls, mysterious caves, unusual flora and fauna, and a unique tribal culture. It also boasts of having two of the wettest places on earth within its territorial boundaries—Cherrapunji and Mawsynram.

A visit to Meghalaya is unlike anywhere else in India because it gives you a multitude of experiences within a very short span of time. So, if you're planning to head to the beautiful hill state anytime soon, here's a well-planned itinerary to kick your plans into action.

Land at Guwahati and head to Shillong

Although there's an airport at Shillong, it is not as well connected as the one in Guwahati. To avoid uncomfortable schedules and layovers, it’s easier to fly to Guwahati and then drive to Shillong, which is about 132 km (4 hours) from there. Book a morning flight so you can start exploring Shillong on the first day itself.

Once you reach the Meghalayan capital of Shillong, take a couple of hours to rest and freshen up and then head to the Polo Grounds. Spend an afternoon there witnessing teer, a daily archery contest. Follow this up with a walk around the Bara Bazar, Shillong's main market, in the evening.

Explore Shillong and nearby areas

Spend the morning exploring the Williamson Sangma State Museum, if you're a history buff, or head to Ward Lake, one of the most popular tourist spots in the city, if you want a piece of natural beauty. Shillong also has a number of lovely churches that provide an insight into the architecture in the state.

Mawphlang Sacred Grove

In the afternoon, head to Mawphlang to see the state's revered groves. The beautiful forest area is perfect for spending an afternoon and you can interact with the locals for a wholesome experience. The tribals here believe that the Mawphlang forest is inhabited by divine beings who protect it.

If you plan a trip around November, make sure you also visit Smit , located at an hour's distance from Shillong, which hosts the annual five-day Ka Pomblang Nongkrem festival. The celebration is vibrant and full of colour and is a way of the Khasi people to thank goddess Ka Blei Synshar for the harvest.

Visit the monoliths of Nartiang

Nartiang is a three-hour drive east of Shillong. Leave the city after a good breakfast in the morning and carry snacks with you for the journey. It is a picturesque drive to say the least.

Nartiang houses the remains of the summer palace of the Jantia Kings. There's also a famous Durga temple, but besides these two attractions, the village is known for being home to one of the biggest monolith collections of the country, dating back to the 16th and 18th centuries.

Head back to your hotel in Shillong in the evening and prepare for Cherrapunji the next day.

Cherrapunjee

Head to cherrapunji.

Located about 1.5 to 2 hours west of Shillong, Cherrapunji—better known as Sohra—is one of the wettest places on earth. One of the major attractions here are the living roots bridges. A slightly tough trek leads you to these bridges, which are naturally made from roots of trees braided together. They are set to grow across the river, thus making life easier for locals. There are a number of these root bridges that travellers can trek to and each of them looks like something out of a fantasy novel.

The same day, visit the Khasi settlement in Mawlynnong, which is considered to be the cleanest village in Asia. If you don't have an accommodation in Cherrapunji, you can get one in Mawlynnong as well. From here you can head to the village of Nongriat. Finally, catch your breath at Nongriat, which houses a double-decker living roots bridge. The whole trek and the round trip from Cherrapunji takes about 9 hours.

Cherrapunji to Guwahati

Book an evening flight back from Guwahati so you can spend the day driving back to the city. Start from Cherrapunji in the morning. It takes a little over 4 hours from here to the airport in Guwahati. Make sure you stop for a while at the Umiam lake, the biggest artificial reservoir in the state. Try your hand at fishing here and make sure to pack a picnic for enjoying while you spend time at the shore.

Where is Meghalaya?

Meghalaya is located in the northeastern part of India. Meghalaya was carved out of the state of Assam and shares its borders with Assam and Bangladesh in the west and south.

Meghalaya Trip – Is it safe to visit Meghalaya?

Meghalaya is perhaps one of the safest states that we have visited. The people are friendly and will always be ready to help you.

Meghalaya is also one of the safest places for women to travel. Being a matrilineal society, crimes against women are not much seen here. I have travelled solo in Meghalaya in remote places like Tura without any fear. Meghalaya is one of the states where I feel quite at home during solo travel as well.

How to Reach Meghalaya?

Just like the other northeast states, Guwahati forms the entry point of Meghalaya as well. Shillong is the most important and the capital city of Meghalaya. Your Meghalaya trip will probably start from Shillong itself.

Shillong has a domestic airport that is connected by flights from Kolkata, Guwahati and New Delhi. However, the best way to enter Meghalaya would be to arrive at Guwahati and then move on to Shillong.

The nearest railway head is Guwahati. You will get shared jeeps and cabs just outside the Guwahati Railway Station at Paltan Bazar. You will also get shared jeeps and cabs from Khanapara in Guwahati.  Buses are also available from the ASTC Bus Stand outside the railway station. Regular buses are also available from ISBT, Beltola in Guwahati.

Helicopter services are also available from Guwahati to Shillong. But we recommend you to take the road. Shillong is only 100 km from Guwahati and the roads are pretty good and scenic as it follows an uphill drive through lush greenery.

Local Transport in Meghalaya

Your first stop in Meghalaya trip will perhaps be Shillong. From Shillong, you have to visit different places.

Moving around Shillong

Buses and Yellow Taxis are available for travelling to various destinations in the city. Tourist Taxis are available in Shillong for local sightseeing as well as for long-distance tours.

The Main Taxi Stand is at the Police Bazar Stand. From here you will get shared yellow taxis to different destinations in the city. City buses are also available for going around in Shillong.

The Meghalaya Tourism Office is located at Police Bazar itself. You can book city tours and various other sightseeing tours from there. They conduct tours to Cherrapunjee, Mawlynnong, Dawki and other places as well. You can also hire cars for going around from the Tourism Office.

Moving around towns in Meghalaya

You can hire cars for travelling to various destinations in Meghalaya from the Police Bazar Taxi Stand.

If you want to travel by shared vehicles, the Sumos are available from Bara Bazar Sumo Stand near Ïewduh. Shared Sumos to other destinations like Dawki, Kongthong, Nongstoin are also available from there.

For offbeat places, the number of shared jeeps is quite less. So if you want to travel around Meghalaya by shared vehicles, keep some time in hand and get to know about the vehicle timings beforehand.

Bike Renting at Shillong

You can explore Meghalaya on a bike just like we did and enjoy the adventure on the road. The main roads are quite good in Meghalaya and riding is quite enjoyable. Shillong has a number of bike rentals from where you can get scooters and motorbikes for hire.

The rental agencies usually take a deposit amount depending on your ride and you also have to submit one of your Identity proof in original there. They will return the ID once you return the bike. They also provide one helmet with the bike. You can also ask for another helmet at a nominal extra cost.

The rate for scooty or scooter is INR 600-800 per day (without petrol)

For Bikes, it is INR 1000-1200 per day, and for Royal Enfield, the rental is usually INR 1500-1800 per day.

What is the Best time to visit Meghalaya?

Meghalaya has a tropical climate. The best time to visit is the winter months from October to March. But if you want to see the waterfalls in their full glory, visit at the end of the rainy season or just after it, i.e between August to the beginning of October.

Meghalaya is one such place in India that is beautiful in all the seasons. While our favourite time to visit is during the monsoon, the other seasons are equally enchanting. When you want to go for a Meghalaya trip actually depends on what you want to do.

April to June (Summer)

The weather is agreeable during this time and the temperature remains cool. Summer is definitely a peak season for a Meghalaya trip. This is a good time to go outdoors and explore. This is also a good time to do caving. However, the waterfalls will have less water. The Seven Sister Waterfalls in Cherrapunjee can be hardly seen during this time. It looks like small strips of water cascading down the mountain cliff, during the summer.

July to September (Monsoon)

Monsoon arrives in Meghalaya in June itself. However, from July it is peak monsoon. Since Meghalaya is one of the wettest places on earth, it receives a lot of rainfall. Monsoon in Meghalaya is simply beautiful. Everything looks lush and green and the waterfalls get a life of their own. The clouds and fod renders a mystique and charm to the place.

Cherrapunjee and Mawsynram are particularly beautiful during this time. However, you will probably not get the clear water at Umngot River at Dawki during this time. Caving is also not recommended during this time.

In short, if you love to travel during the rain, we would definitely recommend you for a Meghalaya trip. However, be prepared for bouts of showers every now and then. Also, do carry your rain wear during this time.

October to November (Autumn)

This is one of the best seasons to visit Meghalaya. The rains have stopped, but the after effects of rain are still there with greenery everywhere and lively waterfalls. The weather is sunny and cool, perfect for outdoor activities and treks.

December to February (Winter)

The weather remains comfortably cold; however, the days are a bit warm. The mornings are usually foggy. Winters are also a good time to explore and do all the outdoor activities like trekking and caving. This is also a good time to visit Dawki. You will see the crystal clear waters of the river for which Dawki is so famous for.

Places to visit in your Meghalaya Trip

1) shillong.

Shillong, the capital of the state is a busy, trendy and energetic city with a vibrant population. There is a lot of British influence in the architecture of Shillong. With the beautiful hills around and the number of lakes, Shillong is referred to as the ‘Scotland of East’ . Police Bazar is the busiest point in Shillong with a busy marketplace. Most of the major hotels in Shillong are found around Police Bazar. You can use cozycozy to find a cheap accommodation for your trip to Meghalaya. Shillong has some fine cafes that also offer music. Shillong is the place of music lovers.

Attractions in Shillong:  Plenty of places to visit here – Ward’s Lake, Lady Hydari Park, Shillong Peak, Elephant Falls, Shillong Golf Course, Smit, Laitlum Canyons, Bishop & Beadon falls and Umiam Lake.

2) Cherrapunji

Cherrapunji or Cherrapunjee , also known as Sohra is located around 60 km from Shillong. You can visit Cherrapunji from Shillong and come back in a day. There are tours conducted by the Meghalaya Tourism for Cherrapunji. But we recommend a night stay at the place. Shared cabs to Cherrapunjee are available from Bada Bazar in Shillong. The Yellow Sumos take you to different places in  Meghalaya.

Cherrapunjee was said to be the wettest place on earth before Mawsynram took over. Naturally, the place is amazing during the monsoons.

Attractions in Cherrapunji: The Nohkalikai Waterfalls is the fourth highest waterfall in the world and makes for a grand sight. The Seven Sister Falls, Wei Sawdong Falls and Dainthlein Falls are also worth visiting. The Mawsmai and Arwah caves are other places that you should visit. Amazing stalactites and stalagmite formations are found in these caves.

From Cherrapunji, you can visit Mawsynram, the wettest place on the earth and the Khasi monoliths.

3) Nongriat Trek

The fascinating experience of Cherrapunjee is the visit to the Double Decker Root Bridge in Nongriat village. The route from Tyrna is the easier one to reach Nongriat, but you have to descend as many as 3500 steps to reach the village. Once you are at Nongriat, the trouble will seem nothing compared to the views and hospitality you will receive there. It is advisable to stay for a night at Nongriat if you wish to do the Double Decker Living Root Bridge Trek .

4) Mawlynnong

Mawlynnong is declared to be the cleanest village in Asia . The place is around 80 km from Shillong and a trip to Mawlynnong and Dawki can be done in a day keeping your base at Shillong. Like Cherrapunjee, Meghalaya Tourism conducts tours to Mawlynnong as well. Mawlynnong has a number of homestays as well where you can stay for the night.

The village is extremely clean and well-maintained, having bamboo dustbins at places. With greenery all around and colourful flowers and orchids blooming, Mawlynnong simply looks amazing.

Attractions in Mawlynnong: There is another single decker Living root bridge in Riwai village. There is a balancing rock that you can visit. 5) Mawphlang

Around 45 km from Shillong, the Mawphlang Sacred Groves is situated in the East Khasi Hills. Once you reach the place, you can see rolling green plains, dense forests amidst the backdrop of blue skies. You can get a shared sumo to Mawphlang as well. There are accommodation options at Mawphlang in case you want to stay there for the night. A sacred grove is a small forest area considered sacred by the Khasi tribe. The sacred grove usually has a number of medicinal plants and herbs and exotic plant species.

Mawphlang is also the starting point of the David Scott Trail .

All the beautiful pictures of reflections of country boats on crystal clear water that you have seen are probably taken at the Umngot River in Dawki. Situated on the border of Bangladesh, Dawki is the last town on the Indian side before the Bangladesh border. You can reach Dawki by a shared Sumo from Bada Bazar in Shillong.

You can stay at Dawki or move forward to Shnongpdeng, another beautiful hamlet on the banks of Umngot River. There are a number of homestays at Shnongpdeng and camping options are also available at both Dawki and Shnongpdeng .

Attractions at Dawki & Shnongpdeng : A number of water activities like country boat ride, scuba diving, cliff jumping and fishing.

Offbeat places to visit in Meghalaya Trip

1) Mawlyngot

2) Mawlyngbna

Mawlyngbna is a place for adventure seekers. The Travellers Nest is the only place of accommodation here. Situated amidst the forests, the Travellers nest has only two cottages. Camping can also be arranged here. You can go trekking, visit the waterfalls and go kayaking in the lake.

3) Kongthong

Kongthong is a very interesting place in Meghalaya. Situated between two famous ridges, getting to Kongthong is an adventure in itself. The unique culture of Kongthong’s inhabitants is they do not call out to each other using their names, they instead sing out names that are given to every individual of the village at childhood. Kongthong is also known as the Whistling Village of Meghalaya.

Umden is situated in the Ri-Bhoi district and is known for its eri silk production. Here you can witness all the steps in sericulture starting from rearing of silkworms to spinning and reeling of silk to yarn production and dyeing and finally to weaving. The village itself is really beautiful nestled in a serene valley.

5) Nongkhnum Island

The road to Nongkhnum Island is long, but the view that you get here compensates all your trouble. It is the largest river island in Meghalaya and is situated near Nongstoin. The island with clear waters of the river is a serene place with hardly any soul. You can also go camping on the river island.

6) Tura, Garo Hills

Tura is the second most important city in Meghalaya after Shillong. Located in the Garo hills, Tura offers great eco-tourism options and the wildlife sanctuaries in this area have interesting wildlife. Siju Caves, one of the longest cave systems in India, also lies close to Tura.

Overnight Buses to Tura are available from Shillong Polo Ground. Sumos are also available in the morning. Tura is also accessible from Guwahati. Hotels and homestays are available in Tura.

Attractions in Tura: The entire Garo Hills are full of many interesting places. The Tura peak, Nokrek National Park, Rongbang Dar Waterfall are few of the places near Tura worth visiting. Other interesting places include the majestic Balpakram National Park and gorge, Pelga Falls, Siju Caves and Naphak Lake.

Know the People of Meghalaya

Places become livelier because of its people. Meghalaya is no exception. The place is the home to three tribes – Khasi, Jaintia and the Garos. The Khasis occupy the Khasi hills of central Meghalaya, the Garos occupy the western Garo Hills while the Jaintias occupy the Jaintia hills of eastern part of the state.

At present most of the tribes have embraced Christianity, but they have not forgotten their age-old customs. A common trait of the three tribes in Meghalaya is that they predominantly follow a matrilineal system where lineage and inheritance are passed through women of a family. The state has a liking to music and that can be seen in numerous rock bands.

All the three tribes are quite close to nature. They have preserved their ancient forests and groves. Their harmony with nature can be seen in the numerous root bridges that are found across the state.

The people are also quite fond of music and dance and that can be reflected in their festivals. The Khasi and Jaintia tribes praise nature, land, waterfalls, hills and rivers in their songs. The Garo folk songs are mostly based on agriculture, marriage, daily life and special events.

What to Eat in your Meghalaya Trip?

If you are a foodie, then you will definitely love Meghalaya.  Jadoh is the staple food in the Khasi region and is easily available. Various preparations of pork, fish and chicken are also available here.  If you want some great Khasi cuisine in Shillong, I would recommend you to head to Trattoria. This is a small eatery in Police Bazar and serves delectable Jadoh and other Khasi dishes. Food is relatively cheap in Meghalaya.

You can also check out the cafes in Shillong. They serve great coffee and food items.

For the rest of the tourist destinations, there are small restaurants and eateries all along where you will get good food. Do not expect fancy restaurants in these places other than Shillong. In the smaller places and villages, you will probably stay at homestays and your food will be arranged by your homestay.

Vegetarian fares are also available in Meghalaya. Please note that Meghalaya, like the other northeastern states, are predominantly non-vegetarian. So in most of the places, you will get a variety of non-veg items. Vegetarian items will be present, but you might not get a variety there.

Rice is an important part of their diet. They make a preparation of sticky rice and have it for breakfast. Lunch and dinner also comprises of rice.

Thanks for nice blog on Meghalaya. Is it possible to cover Meghalaya by Scooter/bike, rented from SHillong for entire trip of 5 days. Are roads comfortable in driving around ? or shared cabs/tour package is best option?

Hello! Thanks for writing to us. Yes, you can cover Meghalaya on rented scooty or bike. The r oads are pretty good between Shillong and Cherrapunjee. There might be some bad patches, but it is not difficult to ride and drive around Meghalaya.

Just 1 question though: do you suggest we book a cab for the entirety of the trip from Shillong itself? Or, do we book different cabs at different points? For example, 1 cab for shillong sight seeing and dropping to cherrapunji, 1 cab for cherrapunji Sight seeing and to transfer to Mawlynnong and then a separate sight seeing cab there?

What would the cost and comfort implications be? We have a 1 year old of a friend travelling with us, so want clarify.

Hello Darshan, Thanks for reading our blog. I think it will be good to book a cab for your entire trip. The cost will come up almost same if you are on move every day. In that way, you do not have to think of the next transport option. Just a suggestion, try to book cabs from Meghalaya, and not from Assam. Have a wonderful trip!

I loved the way you have written this guide .. it is a big, big help… but I need a little more help from you guys.. I am a travelling solo to Meghalaya soon and I want to visit it like locals do. Amazing and very informative article. After watching your wonderful vlogs ; i planned a trip to Meghalaya for 10 days in the month of may (end) and june (1st week). Can you tell if it rains heavily in may end, and trek to krem chympe is possible ?

Thank you Supriya! If you want to camp at Nongkhnum Island, you have to arrange it beforehand. The island is totally barren and you need to arrange everything before if you want to stay there for the night.

We would definitely be on board to see the water falls. They are always so nice to see and leave us in awe. It is incredible that so many of these cities are ranked among the highest in average rainfall. I don’t know if I could live somewhere that rained that much. The whole area does look beautiful though.

There’s a whole world out there in the east of India which remains unexplored by me and it is such a pity! I can’t believe I have been around the country, from the North to the West to the South but never made it to Meghalaya. I have, of course, heard a lot about Shillong and Cherrapunji but Mawlynnong also looks like a great place to go, especially the living root bridge! Also, the river in Dawki looks so beautiful, I’d love to take a boat ride across it.

Yes, the food is amazing there and really cheap! We had a great time there and Meghalaya is not that expensive. It is definitely a budget friendly place.

Ministry seeks support to identify top tourist destinations

NEW DELHI: The Union Ministry of Tourism has written to other ministries and departments to participate in its ‘Dekho Apna Desh People’s Choice Tourist Destination Poll’. The initiative was launched by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on March 7.

One of the objectives of the campaign is to obtain public feedback on the best tourist attractions across different categories—spiritual, cultural & heritage, nature & wildlife, and adventure activities for developing them into world-class tourist destinations, said an official. Besides the four main categories, the ‘other’ category is where one can vote for their personal favourites and help uncover hidden tourism gems in the form of unexplored tourism attractions and destinations such as vibrant border villages, wellness tourism, and wedding tourism etc.

The choices will enable the ministry to identify attractions and destinations for development on a mission mode, contributing to India’s journey towards Viksit Bharat, they added.

Participants can input their favourite tourist attractions into five defined categories that align with their preferences on MyGov.in, a platform introduced to build a partnership between citizens and the government. It’s mandatory for participants to select at least one tourist attraction they have already visited from any of the five categories and choose at least one attraction that they wish to visit in the future.

The campaign will close on April 30.

“The launch, awareness campaign/ promotional activities are expected ...to increase citizen’s participation/ Jan Bhagidari through multiple channels. The Ministry of Tourism is keen to collaborate with all other ministries and the state/ union territory (UT) government to maximise the participation of citizens in this campaign,” read the letter sent to the secretaries of the ministries and department.

The embassies and high commissions abroad have also been promoting the campaign.
