Best Coffee Shops & Tasting Tours in Puerto Vallarta / Banderas Bay

Puerto Vallarta, known for its stunning beaches and vibrant culture, also offers a thriving coffee scene that shouldn’t be missed by coffee enthusiasts. From cozy cafes with picturesque ocean views to immersive coffee plantation tours up in the mountains, there’s something to satisfy every coffee lover’s cravings. Below are the best places to have coffee and indulge in unforgettable coffee-tasting tours in Puerto Vallarta.

El Cafecito de Puerto

Coffee tasting experiences, café de olla, best coffee shops & roasters in puerto vallarta, beach please coffee store.

Experience the vibrant flavors of Mexico at the Beach Please Coffee Store in Bucerias. They proudly source 100% Mexican coffee from Nayarit, Jalisco, Veracruz, Oaxaca, and Chiapas, offering bags of freshly roasted beans. Choose whole bean bags for maximum freshness or have your coffee ground on the spot. Their lineup includes award-winning local roasters and coffee growers from all over Mexico. All the coffee beans have been shade-grown at an altitude between 800-1400 meters and include Bourbon and Caturra varieties.

Try their freshly brewed “coffee of the day” is a daily rotation featuring medium and dark roasts. Don’t miss out on Haley’s signature Coconut Coffee Frappe , a refreshing tropical twist on your caffeine fix inspired by Vietnam’s cà phê dừa. They also have traditional ‘cafe de olla,’ prepared with aromatic cinnamon, zesty orange peel, cloves, and piloncillo (unrefined cane sugar). You won’t find an espresso machine , but that doesn’t compromise the quality of their brews. Instead, they embrace manual methods like the Percolator for their daily coffee specials and Aeropress and French Press. Another crowd favorite are their flavored Cold Brews with cold foam.

If you are looking for a place to work, they have 100mbps internet, comfortable tables with plugs, and discounted coffee refills! Discover a world of coffee excellence with your local caffeine dealer, the Beach Please Coffee Store.

Proyecto Darwin

Proyecto Darwin Cafe is an oasis tucked away in the farmlands just 10 minutes northeast of Bucerias. The picturesque surroundings, diverse breakfast menu, and exceptional hand-roasted coffee all contribute to a truly memorable experience. If you find yourself in the Bucerias area, I highly recommend taking the time to discover this charming cafe.

Proyecto Darwin’s menu is a delightful surprise with a wide array of delicious dishes to choose from. The chilaquiles are a flavorful classic, while the omelettes are made to perfection. The choripan is my favorite, and the breakfast sandwich crafted from a cinnamon roll is a must-try. And if you’re craving something light and fresh, the avocado toast is a great option as well.

Although the food menu is great, the real star of the show at Proyecto Darwin is the coffee, and it’s clear that Daniel, the owner, is truly passionate about his craft. Daniel personally roasts three distinct coffee blends, ensuring that each cup is a work of art. The first blend, a medium roast crafted from Nayarit and Chiapas beans, offers a balanced and smooth flavor profile. The second blend combines medium and dark roast beans from Nayarit, Chiapas, and Veracruz, providing a more complex and robust taste. Finally, the dark roast blend, also from Nayarit and Chiapas, delivers a bold and rich experience. Coffee aficionados will be delighted by the diverse range of flavors, and the care put into each cup is evident with every sip.

Vallarta Coffee Roasters

Located in the heart of Puerto Vallarta’s Old Town, Vallarta Coffee Roasters is a hidden gem for coffee aficionados. Step into this quaint cafe and be greeted by the captivating aroma of freshly roasted coffee beans. Their skilled baristas are passionate about their craft and serve a variety of specialty coffees sourced from local Mexican coffee farms. Sit back, relax, and enjoy your cup of joe while taking in the charming ambiance of this cozy coffee spot.

For those seeking an oceanfront coffee experience, El Cafecito de Puerto is the perfect choice. Situated along Puerto Vallarta’s scenic Malecon boardwalk, this coffee shop offers breathtaking views of the Pacific Ocean. Indulge in their carefully crafted espresso-based drinks while watching the waves crash against the shore. With its prime location and delicious coffee, El Cafecito de Puerto provides an unforgettable setting for your morning or afternoon pick-me-up.

Coffee Culture in Puerto Vallarta

While some of the coffee beans used are sourced from nearby regions in Nayarit and Jalisco, the majority come from the picturesque states of Veracruz and Oaxaca. The coffee community in Puerto Vallarta proudly upholds its commitment to serving 100% Mexican coffee, showcasing the country’s rich coffee heritage.

Coffee Producers

Veracruz , with its long history of coffee culture dating back to the late 1800s, holds a special place in Mexico’s coffee landscape. The diverse climates and elevations in Veracruz contribute to the cultivation of distinct Arabica coffee beans, with this region being the birthplace of the renowned coffee liqueur, Kahlua. On the other hand, Oaxaca coffee hails from the southern slopes of the majestic Sierra Madre de Oaxaca mountain range. Prized for its delicate body and dry, acidic snap, Oaxacan coffee is grown at higher altitudes, rivaling the complexity of coffee sourced from Guatemala.

When it comes to local coffee in the Puerto Vallarta area, the spotlight shines on San Sebastián del Oeste . This quaint town, originally founded as a mining center in the 1600s, played a significant role in the origins of Puerto Vallarta. Acting as the supplier of salt for the smelting process in San Sebastián’s mines, Puerto Vallarta’s history is intricately intertwined with this charming town. Though the mines may now be closed, San Sebastián continues to thrive as a time capsule, with buildings that date back to the 1600-1800s. The higher altitude of the area offers the perfect conditions for cultivating exceptional coffee beans. Savoring coffee originating from San Sebastián while in Puerto Vallarta pays homage to the harmonious blend of history, culture, and abundant flora and fauna that this region embodies.

If you’re looking to experience traditional Mexican coffee, a visit to Café de Olla is a must. This charming cafe is known for its signature drink, also called Café de Olla, which is brewed with cinnamon and piloncillo (unrefined cane sugar). Sip on this delightful beverage and savor the unique flavors that have been enjoyed in Mexico for generations. The café also offers a range of delicious pastries and breakfast items to complement your coffee experience.

Yes, of course! Puerto Vallarta has a vibrant coffee culture with numerous cafes and coffee shops where you can enjoy a variety of delicious coffee drinks. Whether you’re a fan of traditional Mexican coffee (like cafe de olla) or you prefer classic coffee options like Americanos and lattes, you’ll find plenty of choices to satisfy your coffee cravings in Puerto Vallarta. Additionally, many cafes in the city take pride in serving locally sourced and freshly roasted Mexican coffee, making the coffee-drinking experience even more enjoyable for visitors and locals alike.

An Americano coffee usually costs between $35-60 pesos, depending on the cafe.

There are several coffee plantations near Puerto Vallarta, primarily located in the states of Jalisco and Nayarit. These areas benefit from the ideal climate and fertile volcanic soils that contribute to the growth of high-quality coffee beans. Many coffee enthusiasts and tourists visiting Puerto Vallarta choose to explore these nearby regions to witness coffee production firsthand and experience the authentic coffee culture of the area. Some of the most prominent areas for coffee production and plantations include San Sebastián del Oeste, Mascota, or Compostela.

Your guide to Puerto Vallarta

December through March is high season in Puerto Vallarta. Temperatures will be manageable (though still high), whale-watching season will be in full swing and the beach will buzz with families seeking winter sun. If you're not keen on crowds and don't mind missing the whales, consider visiting in shoulder season, between April and June. You'll have more space on the beach and will dodge the scorching temperatures of the height of summer.

Things get cool out on the water, especially in the evening, so pack some sweaters and light layers for boat trips. And make sure you can check all these items off your list too:

  • Binoculars: Very handy if you're spotting whales or other wildlife.
  • Sunscreen: Coat yourself in the stuff all year round, and make it high factor and biodegradable. The sun is strong here and it pays to be protected in every season.
  • Sandals: Don't risk that horrible sand-in-shoes feeling. Liberate your feet with lightweight, open-toed sandals. Or go extra laid-back with flip-flops.

Puerto Vallarta has a good range of transportation, so there's no need to rent a car here unless you want to. The bus network has a frequent service with great coverage, and ticket prices are low. For something more novel, try a water taxi. And of course there are traditional taxis, which publish their rates on the cars so you can be sure you won't get charged too much. Bike paths are plentiful too, so why not explore on two wheels?

No trip to Mexico would be complete without sampling the country’s famous spirits. You’ve got a few options for Puerto Vallarta tequila tours, where you’ll also get to try mezcal and racilla.

Not sure what the difference is between the three? No worries; at the end of this post, you can read more about this. But the best way to learn is in person on one of these Tequila tours in Puerto Vallarta.

Best Tequila Tour in Puerto Vallarta

Don’t have time to read this? This 5-star rated tour is the best option for tequila tasting in Puerto Vallarta.

Table of Contents

Top Tequila Tours in Puerto Vallarta

While choosing your own adventure is possible (check our post about the best bars in Puerto Vallarta ), it’s more fun with a group and a knowledgeable local guide.

We’ve done plenty of, let’s call it “research,” and these are the best options for Puerto Vallarta tequila tours.

Tequila tours in Puerto Vallarta

1. Connoisseur Tequila Tasting

tequila tour in puerto vallarta

Life is better with options, and you’ve got three of them on this tour . You can choose between the introduction, connoisseur, or mezcal option. My personal recommendation is the latter, as it’s fun to try both of the agave spirits.

What a cool experience. The tasting room is in an up-and-coming neighborhood, Versailles, tucked among a bunch of great restaurants, but the true highlight here is the tequila and the instruction about it. Tequila has a fascinating story, more akin to wine than many spirits and it was absolutely worth learning about (and enjoying)! – Review by Justin ( read more reviews )

This tour takes place in Versalles , which is one of the top neighborhoods in PV.

It’s a foodie haven as well, so you might as well grab a bite to eat while you’re there. Some of my favorite spots include Lamara for ceviche, Budaixi for dumplings and noodles, and El Tío Toño for birria.

2. Vallarta Botanical Garden and Tequila Tasting

Puerto Vallarta Botanical Garden

This highly-rated tour takes you to the lovely Vallarta Botanical Garden first. It recently won the American Public Gardens Association’s 2022 Garden of Excellence Award, and deservedly so. This is one of our favorite places to visit in PV, and it should definitely be on your itinerary.

After touring the garden, you’ll get to head to Rancho Los Veranos to learn all about the process of making tequila as you sample the famous spirit. It’s also possible to order lunch here, but just be aware that it is not included in the tour. Either way, I’d advise eating a big breakfast before going on this tour.

We had a wonderful experience on this tour! The tour guide was authentic and professional. The history shared was so informative and full of pride. The Garden was magical and mystical. The tequila tasting was so fun and the prices for the bottles to buy were half the price of some of the local liquor stores down town!! My husband and I are tequila enthusiasts so we really appreciated the quality of the tequila!! Highly recommended!! – Kenneth ( see more reviews here) .

3. Noble Corazon

Puerto Vallarta tequila tasting

Of all the Puerto Vallarta tastings out there, this has to be my fave. And it’s not just because my picture is all over their website. We were not just hamming it up for the camera when we were there – it really was an awesome experience.

You can book their classic tequila tasting at Casa Agavera Vallarta in the 5 de Diciembre neighborhood. Their experts will teach you about the distilling process as you sip on their excellent tequila, mezcal, and racilla.

It’s also possible to book a private tour at your place. If you have an Airbnb with a group, this should definitely be added to your PV itinerary.

4. City Tour with Tequila and Coffee Tasting

Tacos & tequila

This tour checks a lot of the boxes for top things to do in Puerto Vallarta. You’ll get to stroll the famous Malecon, see the iconic Church of Our Lady of Guadalupe, visit a Tequila distillery, and check out a local coffee factory.

There’s also an option to add lunch for this tour. It seems like the food is more expensive if you order it while on the tour, so you may want to add it in advance.

The tour was really fun. Went with my wife and we really enjoyed ourselves. Especially at the tequila tasting. The guide was really nice, knowledgeable and really helped in making sure the entire group had a good time. Doesn’t matter what age you are, because by the end of the tequila tasting you’ll be having a good time. I highly recommend that people book this activity when coming to Puerto Vallarta. – GetYourGuide (read more reviews here).

Tours that visit Tequila (the town)

Most of these tours happen in and around PV, but it’s also possible to travel to the town of Tequila itself. That’s right – there’s an actual town called Tequila! It’s in the state of Jalisco, and it’s the birthplace of the famous spirit.

5. Toriles and Tequila Day Trip

agave fields of tequila

Make sure you rest up before this Tequila tour , as it’s a big one. This 12-hour excursion takes you to Aztec ruins in the town of Toriles as well as the birthplace of tequila itself.

Walk through the agave fields and visit a distillery as you learn all about the process of making tequila. The tour also includes a hearty breakfast, so you’ll be nice and full before the tequila tasting.

It’s a long drive, but the town of Tequila was all I expected. Wish we could have stayed longer, but soaked in all we could. Thank you Thomas! – Thomas ( read more reviews here)

Tequila is about a four-hour drive from Puerto Vallarta, so it does make for a long day if you’re doing it round-trip. If you want to visit Tequila and have the time, I recommend planning a weekend trip to Guadalajara and visiting Tequila from there, as it’s much closer.

Different Types of Mexican Liquor

Tequila and mezcal both come from the agave plant. The difference is that tequila can only be made from blue agave , while mezcal can be made from many types of agave.

Basically, tequila is a type of mezcal, just like bourbon is a type of whiskey. While they are both made from agave, they taste quite different. Many describe mezcal as having a smokey taste. Since it can be made from many agave types, the taste can vary quite a bit.

There are different types of tequila and mezcal based on how long they are aged. For tequila, these are blanco (0-2 months), reposado (2-12 months), and añejo (1-3 years).

Meanwhile, for mezcal, you have joven (0-2 months), reposado (2-12 months), and añejo (at least one year).

Mezcal in Puerto Vallarta

They all have different colors and tastes, so you may want to try them all to find out which type you prefer. That’s where these awesome Puerto Vallarta tequila tours come in handy!

But how about that other Mexican spirit? You might have never heard of racilla, but it’s an important part of the local culture here in Puerto Vallarta. That’s because it is only made right here in the state of Jalisco.

Racilla is also made from the agave plant, but the process differs. This results in a unique taste that’s nothing like tequila or mezcal. It’s still somewhat of an underground phenomenon, and it’s possible to buy bootleg racilla from unmarked plastic bottles.

If you’re not into that, never fear – you can sample it on some of these tequila tours.

That does it for this rundown of the best Puerto Vallarta tequila tours.

Whatever option you choose, remember to pace yourself. Do you know that saying “one tequila, two tequila, three tequila, floor?” It exists for a reason. Be sure to stay hydrated and don’t drink on an empty stomach.

We learned that lesson the hard way and always order some food when we imbibe in tequila, so learn from our past mistakes and eat some tacos!
