Hundreds of cyclists took on the popular Tour De Moor bike ride on Dartmoor this weekend - raising around £100,000 for St Luke's Hospice in Plymouth.

Around 1,100 cyclists took on the three routes ranging from 52km, 30km and 11km.

One man who took part this weekend was 70-year-old Mike who three years ago was told he'd never walk again.

Defying his prognosis, Mike is now up and walking and took part in the event riding a trike.

"It's brilliant," he said. "You can't beat a trike and you can't beat the Tour De Moor, the atmosphere from the start when you arrive to when you leave is really good."

It costs around £10million pounds a year to fund St Luke's Hospice - with only 23% of its funding coming from the NHS.

St Luke's says money raised from this weekend's cycle ride will help care for more than 100 families at home - many who live in rural Dartmoor and rely on the hospice's at-home nurse visits.

Only 7% of hospice care takes place in a traditional hospice building, the majority of hospice care is now delivered in people’s homes.

This year is the 40th anniversary of St Luke's and this week marks the start of National Hospice Care Week.

Tour de Moor cyclists

A local charity marking its 40th anniversary this year is inviting people to get on their bikes for an exciting challenge in aid of compassionate care and support that positively impacts families affected by terminal illness.

The popular Tour de Moor biking challenge raising much-needed funds for St Luke’s Hospice Plymouth returns to the rugged wilderness of Dartmoor on Sunday, October 9.

The event offers cyclists an adrenalin-packed adventure: the hill-filled, 52km mixed terrain route of mud, sweat and gears. Cycling at its fiercest for those aged 12 and above!

Alternatively, participants of 9 years or older can take it down a gear and saddle up for 30km of tough riding over hills and through woods, and there’s also the ‘mini moor’, a gentle 11km ride along the tarmac paths of Drake’s Trail that’s suitable for all the family.

Not only does Tour de Moor cater for all cycling abilities, it also raises vital funds for the specialist care St Luke’s provides for patients and ensures they can make precious memories with loved ones in their final months, weeks and days. Sponsored by Print Copy Scan, a local supplier of printers and copiers, funds raised will help the hospice continue providing essential bereavement support for patients’ family and friends.

Having welcomed its first patients to Syrena House in Plymstock in 1982, today the hospice cares for patients in their own homes, at University Hospitals Plymouth NHS Trust and at Turnchapel. Its critical service runs 365 days a year, covering Plymouth, South West Devon and East Cornwall.

Penny Hannah, Head of Fundraising at St Luke’s, said: ‘Over the four decades since St Luke’s began, it has been our privilege to have made a difference to many hundreds of local families. So, if someone special to you was looked after by our team, taking on the challenge of Tour de Moor is a fantastic way to pay tribute to them.

‘With three classic routes to choose from, it’s ideal for families as well as more experienced cyclists who really want to push themselves.

‘Every hill climb will be worth the extra effort because the sponsorship money Tour de Moor raises is needed more than ever to help St Luke’s meet the rising demand on our service.’

The Tour de Moor challenge departs from 8.30am at Harrowbeer Airfield, near Yelverton, and finishes there.

Sign up for the challenge at www.stlukes-hospice.org.uk/tourdemoor or by calling 01752 492626. Registration costs £35 for the 52km or 30km route, and £15 for the 11km route.

Tour de Moor 2023 ‘We ride as one for hospice care’

when is tour de moor 2022

The boldest charity cycling challenge in the South West is back for 2023. St Luke’s Hospice Plymouth is inviting bike enthusiasts to get into gear and sign up for the perennially popular Tour de Moor to support compassionate end of life care in the local community.

Whizzing into action on Sunday October 8, the event promises a thrilling two-wheel experience on beautiful, rugged Dartmoor for cyclists of all ages and abilities. This year’s theme for the Tour De Moor is ‘We ride as one for hospice care’ and there’s an exciting option for every rider, whether they are a seasoned competitive cyclist looking for the ultimate adrenaline charge or one who would prefer the buzz of a shorter scenic spin the whole family can join in.

Sponsored by Print Copy Scan, the challenge offers three distinct routes – a fierce hill-filled 52km for aged 12 and up, a brand new intermediate 33km based on Dartmoor National Park’s Granite and Gears Cycle Trail for ages nine and over, and a gentler 11km along the tarmac Drake’s Trail. There’s also a new challenge for school groups.

Registration fees – £35 for the 52km and 33km, and £15 for the 11km – cover the running costs of the event. It’s entrants’ sponsorship and donations that really make the difference for St Luke’s, supporting the critical service it runs 365 days a year, covering Plymouth, South West Devon and East Cornwall.

Penny Hannah, head of Fundraising at St Luke’s, said:

“The Tour de Moor challenge offers a terrific combination of fitness, fun and phenomenal surroundings, and we’re so excited to be ringing the changes this year with a brand new 33km route, as well as an opportunity for school teams to get involved.

“It’s a really inclusive event that adults and children can join in, choosing the route which suits them, all riding together with the same great aim in mind – helping St Luke’s provide the very best support at home, in hospital and in our specialist unit, for local people with terminal illnesses and their families.

“We’re incredibly grateful to our Sponsor Print Copy Scan and everyone who takes part. Whether you are cycling in memory of a loved one who was looked after by our teams, or you’re there to push for your personal best performance, it’s your sponsorship and generous donations that make an enormous difference.”

Director of Print Copy Scan, Karl Welburn, said:

“So many families rely on the superb care and support provided free of charge by St Luke’s at the toughest time of their lives. As a community we must never take what the charity provides for granted.

“we’re proud to sponsor tour de moor again, knowing that all the money raised by those taking part goes directly to bespoke care for terminally ill people living in the local area. ”  .

BLOG: The charity cycling challenge, Tour de Moor, returns for 2021

Tour de Moor logo over the top of a event participant

After putting on the brakes last year because of the pandemic, the region’s boldest charity cycling challenge is back for 2021, raising vital funds to support hospice care across Plymouth and surrounding areas.

The Tour de Moor biking challenge in aid of St Luke’s Hospice Plymouth returns to the rugged wilderness of Dartmoor on Sunday 10 October . Sponsored by Print Copy Scan , a local supplier of printers and copiers, the popular event offers cyclists an adrenalin-packed adventure: the hill-filled, 52km mixed terrain route of mud, sweat and gears. Cycling at its fiercest for those aged 12 and above!

Not only does Tour de Moor provide for every level of cycling ability, the money it raises means our highly skilled team can be there for more families affected by terminal illness, providing not just expert medical care but emotional, practical and spiritual support that makes an important difference to them at such a vulnerable time.

when is tour de moor 2022

Since it began in 2010, the annual event has raised just under £800,000 for St Luke’s and the service we provide for patients at home, in hospital and at our specialist unit at Turnchapel.

Penny Hannah, Head of Fundraising at St Luke’s, said: “Tour de Moor is always a fantastic event and this year it will feel all the more special as we welcome cyclists back after last year’s cancellation due to COVID safety measures. It’s fitness and muddy fun, and with three classic routes to choose from, it’s ideal for both families as well as more experienced cyclists who really want to push themselves.

“Taking on the challenge is a great opportunity to get on your bike and help us provide vital care and support to patients and their families across the local area, making every hill climb worth that extra effort!”

Director of Print Copy Scan, Karl Welburn, said, “The calibre of the care St Luke’s provides is second to none, but we must never take it for granted. After a really tough year for everyone, the charity needs our support more than ever. We’re proud to sponsor Tour de Moor again this year. All the money raised by people participating goes directly to patient care across the community.”

The Tour de Moor challenge departs from 8.30am at Harrowbeer Airfield, near Yelverton, and finishes there.

American tennis star Sloane Stephens celebrates winning the Open de Rouen title in 2024.

Former U.S. Open Champion Sloane Stephens Wins First WTA Title Since 2022

  • Author: Madison Williams

American tennis star Sloane Stephens won her first WTA title since the 2022 season on Sunday at the Open de Rouen in France.

Stephens, whose stardom rose when she won the 2017 U.S. Open title, beat Poland's Magda Linette in three sets, 6–1, 2–6, 6–2, in just two hours and 10 minutes during the final on Sunday.

The last tournament Stephens brought home a winner's trophy from was Mexico's Abierto Akron Zapopan in Feb. 2022. The Open de Rouen win is her fifth WTA 250 title, but the eighth professional tennis title in her career. At 31 years old, Stephens made her mark back in the winner's circle. Sunday's win also was her first title victory on clay since 2016's Volvo Car Open in Charleston, S.C.

Stephens showed off a huge smile after shaking hands with her opponent. It was clear to see how happy she was to add another title to her list of tennis achievements.

Stephens will likely play in a couple tournaments before competing in the 2024 French Open, which begins May 20 in Paris.
