How to use the new tab bar in iOS 15 Safari

iOS 15 introduces big changes to Safari — here's how to perform old, familiar features

How to use the new tab bar in iOS 15 Safari

Safari has been a mainstay of Apple's iPhones since the very beginning, but iOS 15 brings some major changes to the venerable web browser's appearance and functionality. Perhaps the biggest alteration is in the tab bar, the part of Safari's interface that governs how you interact with all the websites you've opened.

Most crucially, Safari's tab bar on the iPhone is now at the bottom of the screen by default, instead of the top. That takes some getting used to, not to mention an adjustment of muscle memory — assuming that you don't just go and make Safari's tab bar return to the top of the screen .

  • Here's how to use Live Text in iOS 15

The location of the tab bar may have changed, but other functions in Safari remain the same, even if they might look a little out of place if you keep that tab bar at the bottom of the screen. iOS 15 beta testers may also be confused, as Apple made several tweaks to the look of Safari in response to feedback from users.

To help you navigate around the redesigned Safari browser on your iPhone, here's a guide on how to use the tab bar in Safari on iOS 15, along with a reminder on how to handle some basic interactions.

How to open a new browser tab in iOS 15 Safari

1. Tap the tabs button in the bottom right corner of Safari.

2. Tap the blue plus (+) button on the left side of the location bar.

3. Alternatively, tap and hold on the tab button, then tap New Tab on the pop-up menu that appears.

How to close a browser tab in iOS 15 Safari

1.   Tap the tabs button in the right corner of the location bar.

2. You'll see an overview of all your currently open tabs. Tap the 'x' in the top right corner to close a tab.

3. Alternatively, when you're viewing the page you want to close, tap and hold on the tab button, then tap Close This Tab.

This step also allows you to close all tabs at once with a single tap.

How to share a website in iOS 15 Safari

1. Tap the Share button in the center of the location button.

2. On the ensuing screen, tap the contact you want to share a website link with (it will be in the last app you connected with them) or pick an app for sharing the link.

The Share icon is also what you tap to perform other actions with a particular web page. These actions include copying the link, adding it as a bookmark or favorite, searching for a word or phrase on the page, and adding to your reading list.

How to reload a website

If you tested an early beta of iOS 15, reloading a website was unnecessarily complicated, forcing you tap a More button in the tab bar; only then could you access the reload button. But later on during the beta process, the reload button was added to the tab bar — just tap it when you want to reload a page.

Alternatively, you can drag down from the top of the webpage to reload it in iOS 15 Safari.

How to activate Reader mode in iOS 15 Safari

1. Tap the Aa button on the left side of the tab bar.

2. Select Show Reader.

3. You're now in Reader mode. To close Reader, just repeat steps 1 and 2, only this time, select Hide Reader.

Alternatively, pressing and holding the Aa button automatically launches Reader mode.

How to switch between browser tabs in iOS 15 Safari

1. Tap the tab button along the bottom strip of icons in Safari.

2. Select the tab you want to open.

Alternatively, you can swipe upward on the location bar to see all your tabs.

You can also quickly move between taps by swiping the location bar left-to-right or right-to-left to switch to the next or previous open tab, though we've found this to be tricky on iPhones with smaller screens.

How to open a new private browser tab in iOS 15 Safari

1. Press and hold the tab button in the lower right strip of icons in Safari.

2. Select new Private Tab from the pop-up menu.

3. The tab bar will change colors, signifying you're now in private browsing mode.

4. To exit a Private tab, tap on the Tab icon again. Then select the Private drop-down menu.

5. From there, select your other, non-private tabs.

How to Customize Your iPhone Dock in iOS 15

show menu bar in safari on iphone

The iPhone Dock lets you access your most frequently used apps from any of your Home screens. The default iPhone Dock apps are the Phone, Safari, Messages, and Music apps. I’ll teach you how to change, rearrange, and organize apps into folders.

What’s in This Article?

What is the dock on iphone.

  • How to Use Folders to Add Apps to iPhone Dock

How to Remove Dock on iPhone

The iPhone Dock is located at the bottom of the iPhone. It is sometimes referred to as the menu bar, iPhone home Dock, or the Home screen bottom bar. It is important not to confuse the Dock with the iPhone Home bar at the bottom of the screen. This bar can be used to navigate between Home screens. People often ask how to remove the iPhone bottom bar from their phone. Unfortunately, this isn't possible.

How to Move Apps In & Out of the iPhone Dock

If you already have four apps on your iPhone Dock, you'll have to remove an app before you can add a new app icon to the Dock. If you'd like more apps in your Dock, there's a workaround we'll go over below. I will use Safari as my example because people often ask, “how do I add Safari to my dock?”

Select Edit Home Screen.

Now you know how to add and remove apps! To add even more apps, you can create folders within your Dock .

How to Use Folders to Add Apps to the iPhone Dock

Unfortunately, there's not a great way to add more than four apps to the iPhone Dock without using a workaround. You can, however, add apps to the Dock using folders . This will allow you to add an entire folder of apps to your Dock.

A lot of people wonder if it's possible to remove their iPhone Dock. Apparently, there are ways to do it that involve jailbreaking your iPhone, but this is complicated and risky. Even those who succeed at it may not be able to use the Dock space for other apps, so there really isn't much reason to try it. If you only put your most-used apps here, the iOS Dock is a valuable tool that can save you time.

iOS 15: How to get the iPhone's old Safari layout back

jason-cipriani

Safari's new design in iOS 15 isn't for everyone.

Apple released iOS 15 near the end of September, and the company is currently readying the next update, iOS 15.2, for release likely sometime this week. For some, there's still an annoying change in the iPhone's web browser, Safari. After updating to iOS 15 you may have noticed that the address bar is not located at the bottom of the screen.

ZDNET Recommends

The best iPhones

You can find iPhone models directly from Apple starting from $449.

The change is a jolt to your muscle memory. I know I found myself constantly reaching to the top of the iPhone's screen for the address bar, but eventually, I grew to enjoy the new layout.

It only takes a couple of seconds to make the switch. I suggest giving the new Safari a chance for a day or two before going back to the old design -- I've been using it since June and don't think I could go back to the old Safari. Nonetheless, here are the steps should you need them.

Also: iOS 15 destroyed your iPhone's battery life? Don't panic!

How to go back to the old Safari design

There are two ways to go about reverting Safari to its previous look. One is done directly in Safari; the other requires you to open the Settings app. They both do the same thing, so it's really up to you how you go about making the chance.

 width=

The first method requires you to go to  Settings , then find and select  Safari . Scroll down until you see get to the  Tabs  section. There you'll find two thumbnails of the iPhone.  Tab Bar , which is the new design, is on the left.  Single Tab , or the old design, is on the right. Select  Single Tab .

The second method, which is much easier and quicker, is all done directly in Safari itself, but it's a little hidden.

 width=

You can move Safari's address bar back to the top of the screen with ease.

In Safari, tap on the  aA  icon that should be on the left side of the address bar. A menu will show up, and at the top of it will be the  Show Top Address Bar option . Select it. (You can also use the same steps to reverse the change, as shown in the screenshots above.)

The new Safari isn't the only new feature in iOS 15. I have a few of them here that you need to know about , as well as some great hidden features I've found so far .

If you're going back to the old-look Safari as soon as possible, let us know why in the comments.

iOS 15 Safari: How to change the address/search bar design on iPhone

Avatar for Michael Potuck

Apple’s latest iOS release comes with an all-new Safari design that places the address/search bar at the bottom of the screen by default. But you can switch back to the classic iOS Safari design with a top bar. Here’s how to change the iOS 15 Safari address/search bar on iPhone.

Apple made its way through multiple iterations of the new iOS 15 Safari design and with the sixth beta , it included the option to switch between the bottom address/search bar and the classic iOS Safari top address/search bar on iPhone .

The official iOS 15 public release also includes the classic bottom menu bar instead of packing all of Safari’s buttons into the unified address/search/tab bar.

How to change iOS 15 Safari address/search bar on iPhone

  • Running iOS 15, open Safari on your iPhone
  • In the bottom address/search bar, tap the “aA” icon on the left (when on a website)
  • Tap Show Top Address Bar
  • Tap the “aA” icon in the top address/search bar
  • Choose Show Bottom Tab Bar

Alternatively, you can also change the iOS 15 address/search bar by heading to the Settings app > Safari > swipe down and choose “Single Tab.”

Here’s how it looks to change the Safari address/search bar on iPhone:

Site default logo image

And here’s how it looks to change it back to the bottom address/search bar:

The other way to change the address/search bar design is in the Settings app.

In addition to changing between the bottom and classic top address/search bar designs, you can choose to enable/disable website tinting (matches the top iPhone status bar to websites’ colors) and enable/disable the landscape tab bar.

How to turn on and edit the Favorites bar in Safari

show menu bar in safari on iphone

A few weeks ago, I received a panicked call from my sister. "My Favorites are gone! I don't know where they went and I don't know how to get them back." The favorites in question weren't Instagram likes or Twitter stars — no, her new work Mac had come with its Bookmarks favorites bar disabled.

It's not uncommon to see this in new OS X Yosemite Macs; Safari's default view sports as few buttons and switches as possible, so as to immerse yourself in the Web browsing experience. But it's an easy fix to reenable the Favorites bar and even edit it.

How to turn on and edit the Bookmarks bar in Safari

Turning the Bookmarks or Favorites bar on is a relatively simple process.

  • Open Safari .
  • Select the View menu
  • Find Show Favorites Bar

(If you like keyboard shortcuts, you can also use Command-Shift-B to show or hide the bar.)

How to add new sites to your Favorites bar in Safari

Once your Favorites bar is visible, there several ways to add new sites and folders to it.

The easiest way to add a website is to drag its icon from the status bar to the Favorites bar; you'll see a green plus button to let you know it's safe to drop it onto the bar.

You can also add or edit favorites by doing the following:

  • Click on the Sidebar icon in the upper left corner of Safari.
  • Select the bookmarks icon .
  • Open the Favorites section by clicking on the arrow.
  • Click Edit .

Inside the Bookmarks editing screen, you can add folders to group bookmarks together, or simply drag bookmarks from their current location into the Favorites toolbar.

How to quickly edit your Favorites bar in Safari

If you'd prefer not to launch the full Favorites editor, you can tweak your favorites in a few different ways.

Rename them or their website: Want a different name for your new bookmark or need to update the address? Control-click (or right click) on a bookmark in the Favorites bar and select Rename Bookmark or Edit Address .

Delete: Don't want a bookmark on your Favorites bar anymore? Just drag it off the toolbar and it'll disappear in a cloud of pixel smoke.

Copy for later: Need to share an address with someone? Control-click on a bookmark and select Copy to save it to your clipboard.

iOS 15: How to put the Safari address bar back to the top on your iPhone

iPhone Safari

Read in other languages:

On iOS 15, Apple has moved the address bar of its Safari app to the bottom of the screen of its iPhone and iPad. If you don't like this new design, you can easily put the address bar of your Safari browser back at the top of your iPhone screen.

The idea behind this choice by Apple is to make Safari's interface more ergonomic on iOS 15 and iPadOS 15 . The search bar has been lowered so you don't have to stretch your finger to reach the top of the screen. But after years of getting used to having the address bar at the top, this turnaround may be counterintuitive for some.

  • Check out our selection of the best iPhones to choose in 2022 to use Safari with the bar up or down

So, to put the Safari application address bar back to the top of your iPhone screen, you need to:

  • Go to Settings .
  • Press  Safari .
  • Among the two options - Tab bar or Single tab - choose  Single tab .

In any case, you can switch between the new and old systems as you like. And if you change your mind, want to switch back to the address bar at the top, you can make this change in a faster way, directly in Safari and without going through Settings:

  • In the Safari  application.
  • Press the aA button on the left of the address bar.
  • In the contextual menu, press Show Top Adress Bar .

Those instructions are incorrect.

You sync bookmarks through iTunes or iCloud.

The link is pretty general. I'm specifically trying to move Firefox bookmarks, in HTML format, into Safari on the iPad.

I'm going to need some more step-by-steps for using iTunes (on both ends). Have a link?

Safari on the iPad does not have a Menu bar. What you see is what it has.

Depending on where you are coming from though you may still have a couple different options.

If you are coming from a Mac, you could ostensibly copy your bookmarks to the Safari browser on the Mac and have the bookmarks then sync through iCloud.

If you are on a Windows computer your best bet is to import your bookmarks to Internet Explorer and use the iCloud Control Panel to sync them over to the iPad.

You could also download one of the 3rd party Firefox sync Apps onto the iPad. They will sync with your Firefox browser and bring the bookmarks onto the iPad. You can then use them to open your Bookmarks on any browser on your iPad including Safari. The downside is the Bookmarks won't be inside Safari, but instead will reside in the sync App and you can open Safari from there.

For example:
