Saint Piran’s Remarkable Journey

Saint Piran’s Remarkable Journey: A Year of Achievements and Growth by Richard Pascoe (team boss)

tour of britain zeb kyffin

So much has happened since we first stepped on that platform in Altrincham on Stage One – it has been an incredible and busy few weeks, both on and off the bike. As the cycling world knows, the race culminated for us with Zeb Kyffin finishing in a remarkable 6th place in the Tour of Britain, competing against the world’s best riders and most well-funded teams. Saint Piran’s result was marked as the standout performance by many commentators. As I reflect on what has been such an important step for our riders and the Saint Piran family, it has prompted me to assess the impact we have made during the last few weeks. This impact is testament to the collective effort of so many people and partners.

Our journey as a team has been nothing short of outstanding, and in these moments it is important to remember how we got here. Seven years ago we were a club team, and this year we finished 6th at the Tour of Britain, as well as taking a clean sweep at the 2023 Men’s British National Road Series. What’s more, we became the UK’s number 1 ranked team with the top U23 riders and several international UCI victories. Seven years is an impressively short journey for a team that still doesn’t have a headline sponsor and retains its community roots.

tour of britain zeb kyffin

But, despite our amazing 2023 results, success does not stop at where we place in races: We create opportunities for both riders and staff to develop and learn their craft. In the past two weeks, it has been announced our rider Jack Rootkin-Gray is stepping up to the World Tour with EF Education-EastPost.

We have embedded the importance of mental well being into our day-to-day culture through our partnership with EDelia, providing a support system for staff and riders throughout the Tour of Britain. We were one of the first teams ever – and the only team at the Tour of Britain – travelling with an environmental consultant, assessing how we can reduce our impact on our surroundings. This is a key component of our commitment to reduce the damage of our sport on the world as we move towards achieving net-zero status.

When I look back on this race in years to come, one of the aspects I will value most is our engagement and interaction with the fans on the roadside. We were the only team greeting fans along the course on every stage: handing out flags, giving away goodies, and engaging in brilliant conversations. Many of those we spoke to had travelled hundreds of miles just to catch a glimpse of the riders as they rode past. As a team owner, it’s vital to honour our commitment to our sport by giving something back. I hope the way we rode as a team and the time we spent engaging with people achieved that.

tour of britain zeb kyffin

Despite the narrative in the media that UK cycling is in a bad place, the passion and the dedication of these fans have left us in no doubt that professional and elite cycling could have an incredibly bright future. But we have to entertain.

Finishing 6th overall in the general classification after eight gruelling stages of the Tour of Britain, one of the world’s most watched cycle races, will always feel surreal to me. To watch the riders work so well together on the road was the culmination of a lot of hard work behind the scenes (and in the cars!). It also takes dedication and commitment from our partners and I would like to publicly thank them for that. They played a pivotal role in our success, not only during the Tour of Britain but throughout the whole year.

But in the end, when I stop and look at our engagement, our 6th place, two top tens in the race, the amazing TV coverage and even the recent wins since the Tour, I have to reserve a very very special thank you for our staff. None of this could have been achieved without you; from the team on the roadside supporting our riders to the staff back home keeping our subscribers updated with progress. Everyone exemplified the Saint Piran family ethic throughout the whole Tour and I am proud of each and every member of the team.

But we have to move forward and be bigger and better next year. 2024 is lining up to be an incredible year of growth – on the road, offroad and behind the scenes. There will be changes to the Saint Piran set-up to support our growth but one thing’s for sure, we will not lose sight of the essence of Saint Piran. We will always focus on achieving impact in racing, impact in cycling and impact in society.

2023 Tour of Britain, stage 7: report and results

Rasmus Tiller won stage 7 of the Tour of Britain, 9 September 2023

' src=

The Tour of Britain sprang to life on a swelteringly hot day, as Uno-X Pro Cycling Team’s Rasmus Tiller took victory in Gloucester on Saturday after a pulsating stage.

Race leader Wout van Aert (Jumbo-Visma) attacked three times in the final 30 kilometres on the roads into the historic city, the last of which ended when a reduced peloton caught him within 850 metres of the finish line by Gloucester Docks, but he nonetheless retains his three-second lead ahead of the final stage.

Featured image: Zac Williams/SWpix.com

The Tour of Britain’s first full stage in Gloucestershire was marked by a flurry of attacks, which put van Aert’s Jumbo–Visma team under pressure on the first Pinarello King of the Mountains climb at Winchcombe Hill. It was here that INEOS Grenadiers rider Ben Turner jumped clear of the peloton and was quickly followed by Cumbrian Mark Donovan (Q36.5 Pro Cycling).

tour of britain zeb kyffin

Just when it appeared that a chasing trio of Abram Stockman (TDT – Unibet Cycling Team), Liam Johnston (TRINITY Racing), and Alex Richardson (Saint Piran) were going to be stuck in no man’s land, the leading duo waited for them. The quintet soon gained a three-minute advantage over the peloton.

Van Aert’s first attack of the day came on Crawley Hill, the second Pinarello king of the mountain climb, with a little over 25 kilometres remaining. This whittled the peloton down significantly, but left him short of Jumbo – Visma team-mates for company. His next acceleration of note came on an uncategorised ramp near Painswick, to which nobody initially responded. Within seconds he bridged across to Turner and Donovan, the two survivors from the early breakaway.

tour of britain zeb kyffin

Impressively, Great Britain rider Stevie Williams was able to join the leaders, before an equally mighty performance saw stage six winner Danny van Poppel (BORA–hansgrohe), reigning Tour of Britain champion Gonzalo Serrano (Movistar Team), and Zeb Kyffin (Saint Piran) bridge the gap.

Undeterred by the everybody-against-van Aert status in the race, the Belgian launched another acceleration 4.3 kilometres outside of historic Gloucester and initially looked like he was about to all but seal this year’s overall victory. However, Tiller and Johannessen, together with Nils Politt (BORA – hansgrohe) worked well to close the gap and reel the Jumbo–Visma rider back shortly after the flamme rouge.

Pollit opened up the sprint for van Poppel, but Johannessen and Tiller were ready to pounce, with the stage winner launching his successful sprint around with 100 metres to go.

tour of britain zeb kyffin

Van Aert said:  “Today I overestimated the course a bit. It was quite tough in the final and there were some fast guys who could hang on. Tomorrow we will see an even smaller group [at the finish.

“I thought attack was the best form of defence, so that’s what I did. Unfortunately, I isolated myself with guys on my wheel who wouldn’t cooperate – that was a bit of a mistake.

“My team-mates have done a terrific job the whole week, so it’s quite normal that we don’t get any help from the others I’m still proud of them and hopefully they can hold on for one more day and I can pay them back with a nice GC victory.”

Tomorrow’s final stage from Margam Country Park – Caerphilly features not one but two ascents of the Caerphilly Mountain climb, as well as plenty of climbing beforehand, meaning that the finale of this year’s race should be a ferocious battle right to the end.

Meanwhile, a communiqué issued from the Tour of Britain commissaires panel after stage 7 said that riders could be removed tomorrow if they fall more than five minutes behind. 40 riders finished stage 7 – featuring much less selective terrain than stage 8 – more than five minutes behind the winner, raising the prospect of a high number of riders being pulled from the race before they race the finish line.

  • Zeb Kyffin (Saint Piran) deserves a special mention, one of only two UCI Continental riders to finish in the 12-rider leading group (the other being TRINITY Racing’s Liam Johnston). The 25-year-old London-based rider is having his best season yet, with a win at the Lancaster Grand Prix and second overall at Kreiz Breizh Elites (2.2) among his achievements. Now sitting 9th overall with just one stage remaining of the Tour of Britain – one of only ten riders within three seconds of van Aert – he is on the cusp of his biggest result yet.
  • Mark Donovan (Q36.5 Pro Cycling) pulled off the remarkable feat of being in the main break of the day and then hanging on to finish at the head of the race. Donovan is now the highest-placed Brit on GC (in seventh). An accomplished climber, he looks well-placed to challenge for a top GC result in tomorrow’s fearsome finale.
  • Stevie Williams (Great Britain) also showed his class, jumping across to join van Aert’s group and matching the Belgian on the steepest ramps when it mattered. Like Kyffin and Donovan, he is also just three seconds back on GC. With his punch, finishing speed and apparent good form, the Welshman looks capable of mounting a challenge to van Aert. Racing on home soil, he’s bound to have plenty of roadside support too. One to watch on Caerphilly Mountain.

DOMESTIC RIDER

Saint Piran’s Zeb Kyffin led the charge for the boys in black at the Tour of Britain

Words Tom Thewlis

Zeb Kyffin was working in a “normal” everyday job up until last December.

One year on and the 25-yearold Londoner has a job that ’s anything but. Kyffin has just signed his first professional contract with TDT-Unibet and joined the Dutch squad on a twoyear deal from Saint Piran.

After being part of the Cornwallbased team’s stunning success this season it was only a matter of time before a higher-level squad came calling. Kyffin won the Lancaster Grand Prix in the Saint Piran black and white in July but arguably his best result – and the result that led to interest from above – was sixth overall at the Tour of Britain behind Wout van Aert.

Kyffin tells Cycling Weekly that one of the key aspects to his rapid development this year was being afforded the chance to get amongst it in races across Europe with his team-mates Jack Rootk in-Gray and Alex Richardson.

“It’s all quite something really,” he says. “I never expected to be in this situation. It’s not like it’s a childhood dream, which sounds very bizarre. “I didn’t grow up wanting to be a professional cyclist, I just always enjoyed riding my bike. We raced so much more abroad this year that it’s all fallen into place quite nicely.

“I think the biggest thing, which I think a lot of people don’t k now, is that I actually worked after university at Wahoo in their customer service team in Vauxhall in central London,” Kyffin adds when reflecting on his transformation under former pro turned sports director Steve Lampier.

“I was still work ing full time in a 45- hour week job until December last year. “They had to make a huge amount of the work force redundant. So I lost my job in December, which hit quite hard. Even if you don’t enjoy your job, or even if you don’t think it’s what you want to do in the future, losing a job makes you feel quite down and small.”

Battling the big guns

After losing his job, Kyffin had a decision to make. Did he get on LinkedIn and start look ing for work or throw caution to the wind and attempt to pursue a cycling career full-time? The 25-year-old had been riding for R ibbleWeldtite up until their demise at the end of 2022 and was without a team until Saint Piran came calling.

“Joining a new team and having Jack and A lex as team-mates, both really inspiring people and really motivating people, has been a huge factor in my grow th this year,” Kyffin explains.

“I don’t recognise myself compared to this time last year, the change is just astronomical. My performances in the UK and abroad and then finishing it all off at the Tour of Britain was quite an unexpected journey for me.”

Tour of Britain: Kooij and Van Aert score Jumbo-Visma 1-2 on stage 1

Sam Bennett rounds out podium in Manchester opener

Olav Kooij led Wout van Aert home for a Jumbo-Visma one-two on the opening stage of the Tour of Britain in Manchester, the pair beating out Sam Bennett (Bora-Hansgrohe) in the sprint finish.

Van Aert provided the lead-out for his 21-year-old teammate with Edoardo Affini having dropped the pair off in a perfect position to sprint. The Belgian's final lead-out left Kooij with little work to do at the finish, and his power was such that he could still hold off Bennett to secure second place.

"The entire team made a good effort," Kooij said later. "It was quite difficult to get the break back – that was already quite an effort. Still, the team managed to get Wout and me through the last corner in first and second places. Then all I had to do was go full speed to the finish.

"The fact that everyone was so involved makes the victory even better. [Wout] is one of the best cyclists in the world. To have him as the lead-out gives a lot of confidence. You can trust that everything will work out."

Jumbo-Visma were among several teams working late on to catch the break of the day, along with Bora-Hansgrohe and Movistar.

The WorldTour teams eventually dragged back breakaway survivors Zeb Kyffin, Jack Rootkin-Gray (Saint Piran), and Fredrik Dversnes (Uno-X) inside the final kilometres to set up a bunch sprint finish after Harry Tanfield (TDT-Unibet) and James Fouché (Bolton Equities Black Spoke) had earlier dropped back.

In the end, it was the men in yellow of Jumbo-Visma who took control on the final run to the finish line, the strongest squad in the race showing their organisation and power to set up the lead-out.

The Van Aert-Kooij lead-out proved as unstoppable as it had looked on paper, with both men having more than enough to beat their rival sprinters on the flat run to the line. It was left to Bennett to trail in behind for a podium spot ahead of Max Kanter (Movistar) and Ethan Vernon (Great Britain) lined out behind him.

With his stage win, number eight of the season, Kooij takes on the first race leader's jersey of the week as well as the points and youth jerseys. With 16 points accumulated across the day from the break, Fouché is the first mountain classification leader of the 2023 Tour of Britain.

Meens heads out alone with 52 kilometres to go. Moments later Carlos Rodriguez and Stephen Williams overhaul him and the two open up a lead of 1 minute.

The two are almost caught in the first ascent of Caerphilly Mountain. Which inspires Rodriguez to head on his own. He is first to the top of Caerphilly Mountain second time around.

Van Aert pulls the chase group, but the Spaniard stays out in front. He wins the race 11 seconds ahead of Van Aert, who seals the GC win.

Wout van Aert thwarted as Rasmus Tiller wins dramatic Tour of Britain stage in Gloucester

Race leader Wout van Aert was denied the chance of becoming the Tour of Britain champion-elect as Uno-X Pro Cycling Team’s Rasmus Tiller took victory in Gloucester on Saturday.

Van Aert attacked three times in the final 30 kilometres on the roads into the historic city, the last of which ended when a reduced peloton caught him within 850 metres of the finish line by Gloucester Docks.

Norwegian rider Tiller benefited from a good lead-out from team-mate and compatriot Tobias Johannessen to win from the 13-man group who came into the finish together.

Tiller said: “It feels really good. We have tried [to win every stage here with the two sprinters we have on the team but we knew today was going to be a different race with a smaller [front] group. That suited me better. Tobias did a really good lead-out and it was just for me to sprint for the win.”

“When Wout [van Aert] has a small gap, you know it’s going to be difficult to bring him back. We managed to ride well together, and, in the end, we caught him. Then Tobias did a good lead-out, so I’m happy I had the legs to finish it off.”

The Tour of Britain’s first full stage in Gloucestershire was marked by a flurry of attacks, which put van Aert’s Jumbo – Visma team under pressure on the first Pinarello king of the mountains climb at Winchcombe Hill. It was here that INEOS Grenadiers rider Ben Turner jumped clear of the peloton and was quickly followed by Cumbrian Mark Donovan (Q36.5 Pro Cycling).

Impressively, Great Britain rider Stevie Williams was able to join the leaders, before an equally mighty performance saw stage six winner Danny van Poppel (BORA – hansgrohe), reigning Tour of Britain champion Gonzalo Serrano (Movistar Team), and Zeb Kyffin (Saint Piran) bridge the gap.

Undeterred by the everybody-against-van Aert status in the race, the Belgian launched another acceleration 4.3 kilometres outside of historic Gloucester and initially looked like he was about all but seal this year’s overall victory. However, Tiller and Johannessen, together with Nils Politt (BORA – hansgrohe) worked well to close the gap and reel the Jumbo – Visma rider back shortly after the flamme rouge.

Pollit opened up the sprint for van Poppel, but Johannessen and Tiller were ready to pounce, with the stage winner launching his successful sprint around with 100 metres to go.

Despite missing out on glory, van Aert is still the favourite to win this year’s race. He has a three-second advantage over 10 riders, including Tiller, Williams, and INEOS Grenadiers’ Magnus Sheffield. Olav Kooij (Jumbo – Visma) still leads the cottages.com points classification, while James Fouché’s week-long domination of the Pinarello king of the mountains competition may end in South Wales on Sunday with a maximum of 40 points on offer. Sheffield is the new leader in the Sportive Breaks best young rider classification.

Van Aert said:  “Today I overestimated the course a bit. It was quite tough in the final and there were some fast guys who could hang on. Tomorrow we will see an even smaller group [at the finish].

“I thought attack was the best form of defence, so that’s what I did. Unfortunately, I isolated myself with guys on my wheel who wouldn’t cooperate – that was a bit of a mistake.

“My team-mates have done a terrific job the whole week, so it’s quite normal that we don’t get any help from the others. I’m still proud of them and hopefully they can hold on for one more day so I can pay them back with a nice GC victory.”

Dutchman Olav Kooij celebrates winning the first stage of the Tour of Britain

Olav Kooij wins Tour of Britain first stage with Wout van Aert in second

  • Jumbo-Visma’s Kooij backs up early-season results
  • Van Aert steals early march on probable rival Tom Pidcock

If the Tour of Britain needed a statement of intent from Jumbo-Visma on stage one into Manchester, this could hardly have been bettered: victory for the Dutch team’s sprinter Olav Kooij with the team’s hopeful for the overall title, Wout Van Aert, firmly ensconced on his wheel.

With no time bonuses deducted at the finishes or intermediate sprints, countback on stage placings could be critical if riders end up level on time next Sunday in Caerphilly and second place means that Van Aert has stolen an early march on his probable rival Tom Pidcock.

The team that has won the Giro d’Italia and Tour de France, and is leading the Vuelta d’España, made their interest clear from the off, putting in the bulk of the hard work behind a five-rider escape that included the British riders Zeb Kyffin and Jack Rootkin-Gray, but retaining enough horsepower to give Kooij the perfect set up the sprint on Deansgate. After a technical final couple of kilometres, including one brutal off-camber right-hander, the outcome depended on positioning in the final corner with 300m remaining, where Edoardo Affini led, allowing Van Aert to lead out Kooij.

The efficiency of the Jumbo lead-out was a distinct contrast to Sam Bennett’s Bora team, who did their share of the chasing but went awol in the final metres, where Van Aert had the strength and the effrontery to slot in behind Kooij as he made his final surge for the line, doing just enough to get in Bennett’s way without actually infringing. This was the Belgian’s sixth second place of the season, but not one he will revisit with any regrets.

Kooij continues to progress rapidly at the tender age of 21; in June he scotched rumours that he was flirting with the idea of leaving Jumbo – because their emphasis is clearly on overall titles in the Grand Tours rather than sprint finishes – with a two-year contract extension which means he will complete his apprenticeship there.

This season he has won stages at Paris-Nice and the Tour of Poland, with five other wins including the overall at the ZLM Tour in the Netherlands, which makes him probably the brightest sprint prospect in men’s cycling.

after newsletter promotion

With more sprint stages beckoning in the British Tour, his partnership with Van Aert will find further space to flourish this week. “He is one of the best in the world, having him in front of me gives me so much confidence, you can trust he will get it right,” he said afterwards. On Monday, through Cheshire and into Wrexham, the duo will no doubt be up front again.

Saint Piran DS set to move up pyramid after stunning 2023 campaign

Steve Lampier leaves Cornwall-based UCI Continental team after most successful year to date

  • Sign up to our newsletter Newsletter

Steve Lampier

Saint Piran sports director Steve Lampier is set to depart the Cornwall-based UCI Continental team for pastures new in 2024. Lampier has been largely behind the team's scintillating 2023 campaign which has seen Saint Piran dominate the National Series races in Britain and achieve wins at various races in Europe. Under the ex-pros management the team won a variety of major races in Britain including the Lancaster Grand Prix through Zeb Kyffin. Kyffin was one of the standout performers for the team this season and rounded off the campaign with sixth overall at the Tour of Britain . Lampier has been at the core of the team’s development since its early days starting out in a Cornish bike shop eight years ago. The 39-year-old’s next destination has currently not been made public but Cycling Weekly understands he is set to move to a team higher up the cycling pyramid. Reflecting on his time at Saint Piran, Lampier said it had been a privilege to play a significant part in helping various riders progress in the sport. “The end of a chapter and what a chapter it has been,” he said. “My time at Saint Piran has officially come to an end. From joining at the end of 2017 to become a rider/manager of a then really small Cornish team. To leaving six years later as a sports director of the UK’s number 1 team. “From the early planning in Ricci Pascoe’s kitchen, the first wins, winning the Tour series Sprints jersey, leading the Premier Calendar, getting the UCI licence, the Tour of Britain on my home roads of Cornwall, retirement from racing, my first race as DS, the six straight premier calendar wins, the UCI wins. “It's been so much fun and rewarding working with staff and riders. Helping them achieve their dreams. “I want to thank everyone that's played a part in this journey. Especially Ricci Pascoe for enabling me to pursue my dreams.” It was recently announced that Saint Piran rider Jack Rootkin-Gray will move to cycling's highest level next year and make his WorldTour debut for EF Education-EasyPost. Rootkin-Gray previously told Cycling Weekly that Lampier had played a huge part in his success which led to his move to the top level. On Friday afternoon it was announced that Kyffin would also progress next year and move to the ProTeam level with TDT-Unibet . Kyffin echoed Rootkin-Gray in his praise for Lampier’s management. On Lampier's departure from Saint Piran team owner Ricci Pascoe said: "Steve has been a fantastic colleague and driving force on Saint Piran's eight year journey. His talent, insight and ability have transformed so many riders to be the best that they can be and he has made a lasting impact on our project.... it has been an incredible time together. "The elite road cycling scene in the UK is under a lot of pressure and it is easy to forget that teams like Trinity, Wahoo and ourselves at Saint Piran are creating diamonds that grace the highest levels of our sport and represent the UK. "For us, Jack and Zeb have moved up levels and we hope Steve continues to grow as a leading DS to the very top of the sport."
