The Obama family’s “beloved” personal chef, Tafari Campbell, died of accidental drowning while paddleboarding in a Martha’s Vineyard lake, an autopsy confirmed Tuesday.
Campbell’s cause of death has officially been ruled to be “submersion in a body of water” — and his manner of death has been determined to be an accident, according to the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner of Massachusetts.
The results of Campbell’s autopsy have not been made public as per state policy, Timothy McGuirk, a spokesman for the Massachusetts Executive Office of Public Safety and Security, told the Washington Post.
Campbell, 45, a former member of the White House kitchen staff, had been paddleboarding on Edgartown Great Pond off Martha’s Vineyard, where the Obamas own a summer estate, on July 23 when he lost his footing, went underwater and never resurfaced.
According to an eyewitness, Campbell was not wearing a life vest and was not tethered to his paddleboard. Efforts to rescue him in time were unsuccessful.
Campbell had traveled to Martha’s Vineyard to visit family. Barack and Michelle Obama were not home at the time of his drowning.
The initial investigation by the State Police found no evidence that Campbell’s death was suspicious, with no signs of trauma observed on his body, reported the Boston Herald.
In the wake of their employee’s death, the former first couple put out a joint statement mourning Campbell.
“Tafari was a beloved part of our family,” the Obamas wrote. “When we first met him, he was a talented sous chef at the White House — creative and passionate about food, and its ability to bring people together. In the years that followed, we got to know him as a warm, fun, extraordinarily kind person who made all of our lives a little brighter.”
“That’s why, when we were getting ready to leave the White House, we asked Tafari to stay with us, and he generously agreed,” the tribute went on. “He’s been part of our lives ever since, and our hearts are broken that he’s gone. Today we join everyone who knew and loved Tafari — especially his wife Sherise and their twin boys, Xavier and Savin — in grieving the loss of a truly wonderful man.”
In later comments posted on their individual Instagram accounts, Barack and Michelle hailed Campbell as a “friend” blessed with “immense gifts.”
Campbell, from Dumfries, Virginia, had previously worked as a sous chef at the White House, beginning under President George W. Bush and staying through Obama’s two terms. He was later hired as the Obama family’s personal chef.

Who Is Tafari Campbell, the Obamas' Chef Who Died While Paddle Boarding by Martha's Vineyard?
The father of two, 45, was remembered fondly by former President Barack Obama and former first lady Michelle Obama, who called him "a truly wonderful man"
The White House/Youtube
Tafari Campbell — a former White House sous chef who later became the Obama family's personal chef — is being remembered after he died following a Sunday evening paddle boarding incident near the Obamas' Katama estate on Martha's Vineyard.
Campbell, who was 45, was remembered fondly by former President Barack Obama and former first lady Michelle Obama , who called him "a truly wonderful man" in a joint statement on Monday.
"Today we join everyone who knew and loved Tafari — especially his wife Sherise and their twin boys, Xavier and Savin — in grieving the loss of a truly wonderful man," the couple said in the statement, which was sent to PEOPLE.
Here's more about Campbell.
He Was Married with Two Sons
Campbell was from Dumfries, Virginia, and had been married for more than 20 years to wife Sherise, with whom he shared twin sons Xavier and Savin.
In an Instagram post shared on Monday, his wife Sherise wrote: "My heart is broken. My life and our family’s life is forever changed. Please pray for me and our families as I deal with the loss of my husband."
In another post, Sherise — who owns a baking and catering company called Sweet Sage — said her company was putting orders on hold due to “the recent tragedy in our family.”

Campbell Was a Sous Chef at the White House
The Obamas remembered Campbell in their statement, saying, "When we first met him, he was a talented sous chef at the White House — creative and passionate about food, and its ability to bring people together."
"In the years that followed, we got to know him as a warm, fun, extraordinarily kind person who made all of our lives a little brighter," the couple added, noting that his personality is what ultimately led them to ask him to stay on as their personal chef. The statement continued: "That’s why, when we were getting ready to leave the White House, we asked Tafari to stay with us, and he generously agreed. He’s been part of our lives ever since, and our hearts are broken that he’s gone."
Campbell often took to Instagram to share his culinary creations and was one of the chefs who brewed White House honey ale beer , using honey from Michelle's South Lawn garden while Barack was in office. In 2012, the White House released a video of Campbell and then-assistant chef Sam Kass demonstrating the beer-making process, per The Washington Post .
A Search Was Launched for Campbell Following a 911 Call
A search for Campbell began at 7:46 p.m. ET on Sunday when Martha’s Vineyard police and fire agencies responded to a 911 call for “a male paddle boarder who had gone into the water, appeared to briefly struggle to stay on the surface, and then submerged and did not resurface.”
Massachusetts State Police, who confirmed Campbell's death to PEOPLE, said in a news release that Campbell was recovered by divers from a pond on Edgartown Great Road shortly before 10 a.m. ET Monday.
"MSP Underwater Recovery Unit divers made the recovery after the victim’s body was located by Massachusetts Environmental Police Officers deploying side-scan sonar from a boat," the department said in the release, noting the recovery was made "approximately 100 feet from shore at a depth of about eight feet."
MSP later told PEOPLE in a statement, "Mr. Campbell was visiting Martha’s Vineyard at the time of his passing. President and Mrs. Obama were not present at the residence at the time of the accident."

The claim: Post implies image of Obama golfing is evidence he killed personal chef Tafari Campbell
A July 29 Instagram post ( direct link , archive link ) shows a photo of former President Barack Obama on the golf course alongside a closeup of his face and what appears to be bandaged fingers.
“This is the very first picture taken of Barack Hussein Obama just days after his personal chef, Tafari Campbell, mysteriously died in three feet of water at Obama’s home in Martha’s Vineyard,” reads the caption. “Golfing, no care in the world. Black eye. Cuts on his hands. As if he got into a fight. VERY odd.”
Commenters took this to mean Obama was involved in the death.
One commenter wrote, "Sounds like a suspect to me. Where’s the FBI? Barack Obama belongs (in) jail."
"How does a grown man die in 3 foot of water and nobody question it?? On top of that the dudes employer has cuts all on his hands and a black eye," another commenter posted.

The implied claim here is wrong. There is no evidence Obama was involved in Campbell's death. Police say there is no evidence the death was suspicious and that his body had no signs of trauma.
Obamas were not at home at the time of Campbell’s death
Massachusetts State Police said in reports that there was no evidence Campbell's death was suspicious, and his body showed no signs of injury or trauma.
Campbell died in a July 23 paddleboarding accident in Martha’s Vineyard when he fell off of his board and struggled to resurface. Campbell was in a pond near the Obamas’ home, but the Obamas were not there at the time, police said.
Campbell was with another paddle boarder in Edgartown Great Pond and was not wearing a life jacket when he fell into the water. The other paddle boarder, who authorities have yet to name , tried to save him but swam to shore for help when those attempts were unsuccessful.
After a search that involved side-scan sonar , police found Campbell’s body on July 24. He was found 100 feet from shore in 8 feet of water , which means he did not drown in 3 feet of water, as the post claims.
Fact check : No evidence Bronny James, other athletes, were injured by COVID-19 vaccine
Obama’s taped fingers are golf equipment, not evidence of a crime
The photos in the post are cropped versions of photos originally published by the Daily Mail tabloid on July 28. Those photos, from various angles, to not appear to show a black eye.
As for his fingers, it’s a common practice for golfers to tape their fingers to protect from blisters while they play. Obama has previously been photographed with taped fingers while playing golf, including in 2015 .
USA TODAY reached out to the user who shared the post for comment but did not immediately receive a response.
The Associated Press and PolitiFact also debunked the claim.

Drowning Death of Obama Family Chef Is Ruled an Accident
Tafari Campbell, who had worked as a sous chef when the Obamas were in the White House, died last month in a Martha’s Vineyard lake.
By Eduardo Medina
The personal chef to the Obama family died of accidental drowning last month in a Martha’s Vineyard lake, the chief medical examiner of Massachusetts has ruled, officials said on Tuesday.
The chef, Tafari Campbell, 45, of Dumfries, Va., had been visiting the island in late July and was paddleboarding near the former first family’s summer home when he was seen struggling in the water, the Massachusetts State Police said last month.
The chief medical examiner’s office has determined that Mr. Campbell's death on July 23 was an accident, Timothy McGuirk, a spokesman for the state Executive Office of Public Safety and Security, said on Tuesday night. Former President Barack Obama and Michelle Obama were not home at the time of the accident, the state police said.
The emergency services in Edgartown had responded to a call of a “male paddleboarder who had gone into the water, appeared to briefly struggle to stay on the surface and then submerged and did not resurface,” the state police said in a statement. Another paddleboarder was on the pond with him at the time and saw him go underwater, the police said.
Mr. Campbell, whose survivors include his wife, Sherise, and twin boys, Xavier and Savin, had worked as a sous chef when the Obamas were in the White House and stayed on with them afterward.
In a statement at the time, Mr. and Mrs. Obama called Mr. Campbell “a truly wonderful man” and “a beloved part of our family.”
“When we first met him, he was a talented sous chef at the White House — creative and passionate about food, and its ability to bring people together,” they said. “In the years that followed, we got to know him as a warm, fun, extraordinarily kind person who made all of our lives a little brighter.”
The Obamas said they had asked Mr. Campbell to stay on with them as they were getting ready to leave the White House.
“He’s been part of our lives ever since,” they said. “Our hearts are broken that he’s gone.”

Obama’s personal chef dies while paddleboarding off Martha’s Vineyard
Tafari Campbell, who worked at the White House during Obama’s presidency, was visiting the island while the family was away
Barack Obama’s personal chef died while paddleboarding near the ex-president’s home on Martha’s Vineyard over the weekend, Massachusetts state police said.
Authorities recovered the body of Tafari Campbell, 45, of Dumfries, Virginia, from the Edgartown Great Pond on Monday, police confirmed.
Police had been searching the water since Sunday evening after receiving a call about a male paddleboarder “who had gone into the water, appeared to briefly struggle to stay on the surface, and then submerged”. He did not resurface.
Campbell was employed by the Obamas and was visiting Martha’s Vineyard. The Obamas were not present at the home at the time of the accident.
The former president and his wife, Michelle Obama, said in a statement that Campbell was a “beloved part of our family” who worked in the White House and continued on with the family after Obama left office.
“When we first met him, he was a talented sous chef at the White House – creative and passionate about food, and its ability to bring people together,” the couple said in the statement. “In the years that followed, we got to know him as a warm, fun, extraordinarily kind person who made all of our lives a little brighter.”
“That’s why, when we were getting ready to leave the White House, we asked Tafari to stay with us, and he generously agreed. He’s been part of our lives ever since, and our hearts are broken that he’s gone.”
The search for the missing paddleboarder started on Sunday just before 8pm after reports from a fellow paddleboarder that a man had disappeared in the water at Edgartown Great Pond.
The search was paused late on Sunday but on Monday state police said sonar from a boat located the body at approximately 10am about 100ft (30 meters) from shore at a depth of about 8ft (2.4 meters). Campbell was not wearing a life jacket, police said.
The Obamas said Campbell is survived by his wife and their twin boys.
“Today we join everyone who knew and loved Tafari – especially his wife Sherise and their twin boys, Xavier and Savin – in grieving the loss of a truly wonderful man,” the couple said.

S everal questions remain unanswered days after Tafari Campbell, who worked as a personal chef to Barack Obama and Michelle Obama , drowned in a tragic paddleboarding accident on the island of Martha’s Vineyard off Massachusetts .
The 45-year-old from Dumfries, Virginia, had served the 44th US president during his tenure at the White House between 2008 and 2016 and accepted an invitation to stay on with the family when Mr Obama stepped down to make way for Donald Trump at the end of his second term in January 2017.
Emergency services were called to the Obamas’ 30-acre estate near Turkeyland Cove on Sunday evening after a paddleboarder was reported to have disappeared in the Atlantic Ocean following a “brief struggle” to stay afloat after getting into difficulties.
His body was discovered at around 10am on Monday (24 July) with the aid of sonar technology about 100 feet from the shore and eight feet underwater in Edgartown Great Pond, a large coastal pool connected to the Atlantic.
“Tafari was a beloved part of our family,” the Obamas said in a statement in response to the tragic accident. “When we first met him, he was a talented sous chef at the White House – creative and passionate about food, and its ability to bring people together.

“Today we join everyone who knew and loved Tafari – especially his wife Sherise and their twin boys, Xavier and Savin – in grieving the loss of a truly wonderful man.”
Campbell had a brief brush with fame in 2012 when he brewed an ale from honey gathered from the beehives Ms Obama had installed on the White House’s South Lawn, which is believed to be the first alcohol ever produced within the grounds of 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue.
There are several key details we do not yet know about the circumstances of the beloved chef’s death, a look at which follows.
How did Tafari Campbell drown?
Massachusetts State Police (MSP) said on Tuesday they had concluded that Campbell was “standing on his paddleboard, lost his balance and fell into the water, then struggled to stay afloat but could not do so”.
The MSP added that the deceased “was not wearing a personal flotation device and was not leashed to the paddleboard” at the time of the accident, suggesting he may simply have been overwhelmed by the waves, regardless of his capabilities as a swimmer.
The MSP added in its update that an autopsy had found no evidence that Campbell’s death was suspicious and no trauma or injuries were found on his body.
Police said no other updates are expected except for standard toxicology results, which are protocol in all autopsies and may take several weeks to complete.
Questions have been asked, however, about just how experienced Campbell was in the water after it was noticed that a number of his Instagram posts suggested he may only have learned to swim, or to swim confidently, within the last five years or so.
In October 2017, he posted a photo showing him and his wife standing chest deep in the sea off Aruba, with the hashtag “#stillcantswim”. One follower asked: “But can you swim though? Lol.” Campbell responded with a “weary face” emoji, suggesting frustration or lamenting.
The Independent has contacted that person for comment.
A pair of videos posted about a year and four months later showed him practising various swimming strokes over beginner distances, with the hashtags “#Progress” and “#survivalskills”.
Who was the witness to the tragedy and the 911 caller?
A second person who has not been named was with Campbell when the disaster unfolded, according to the MSP.
“The fellow paddleboarder tried to swim to Mr Campbell’s location but did not reach him in time,” the latest update read.
“The other paddleboarder then swam to shore and notified a person on shore of what had happened. That person placed a 911 call to the Dukes County Regional Emergency Communications Center, which initiated an immediate emergency search and rescue response by numerous public safety agencies.”
The caller has also not yet been named, although the Daily Mail has reported the call came from within the Obamas house without citing a source .
Were the Obamas in the house at the time?
The MSP said on Monday that neither the former president nor his first lady were at home at the time of the tragedy.
However, the Office of Barack and Michelle Obama later clarified that they were on Martha’s Vineyard at the time but not at their mansion when Campbell went missing.
Their daughters Sasha and Malia were spotted leaving Martha’s Vineyard in the aftermath of the epsiode.
The Independent has contacted the Obamas’ office for further details.

Death of Obamas’ chef, Tafari Campbell, is ruled an accident
The drowning death of Tafari Campbell, personal chef to Barack and Michelle Obama, was an accident, according to the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner of Massachusetts.
Timothy McGuirk, a spokesman for the Executive Office of Public Safety and Security, said the commonwealth does not release autopsy results to the public. But McGuirk said the chief medical examiner ruled Tuesday that Campbell’s death was an accident. The former White House sous chef had drowned July 23 while paddle boarding on Edgartown Great Pond, near the Obamas’ home on Martha’s Vineyard, where Campbell, 45, had been visiting.
[The Obamas’ chef, Tafari Campbell, is remembered for his food and discretion]
The Boston Globe reported that “Campbell was standing on his paddleboard when he lost his balance and fell off. He struggled to remain afloat before slipping beneath the water. Campbell was not wearing a life jacket and wasn’t secured to his board. Campbell’s body was found in about 8 feet of water.”
According to the Boston paper, on the evening of July 23, an unidentified woman wasn’t able to assist Campbell after she saw him go under. A rescue swimmer, presumably a separate person, also tried to find Campbell but could not, according to the Globe. Boat crews, dive teams and even a Coast Guard helicopter searched for Campbell that night, according to the paper. Campbell’s body was recovered the following morning.
According to a spokeswoman for the former president and first lady, the Obamas “were not present at the residence at the time of the accident.”
The Washington Post has not yet confirmed the details of the accident.
Campbell’s death left his friends and loved ones in a state of shock. Tributes came from the Obamas, former White House chef and policy adviser Sam Kass, and many others who knew or worked with Campbell.
A native of New York, Campbell studied the culinary arts at Northern Virginia Community College, Kass said. But Campbell also had mentors inside the White House kitchen, including executive chef Cristeta Comerford and assistant chef Tommy Kurpradit. Campbell cooked for two presidents as a sous chef from 2007 to 2016.
Those who worked with Campbell noted not only his meticulous nature, but also his sense of humor.

Campbell was also married to a chef. Sherise Campbell has her own baking and catering company called Sweet Sage . The couple have twin sons, Xavier and Savin, who are young adults.
The Obamas had released a statement shortly after Campbell’s death, calling him “a beloved part of our family.”
A few days later, Barack Obama issued another tribute on his Instagram account.
“Tafari Campbell showed us what true character looks like. He believed that actions speak louder than words. And he used his immense gifts to bring people together, provide comfort, and spread joy,” the former president wrote. “I’ll miss him every day.”

5 things to know about Tafari Campbell — Obama’s chef who died paddleboarding on Martha’s Vineyard
A Virginia man who worked as a chef for former president Barack Obama for over a decade died in a tragic accident while paddleboarding on Martha’s Vineyard Sunday.
In a statement, the Obamas called 45-year-old Tafari Campbell a “part of our family” and a talented chef who was creative and passionate about food.
“We got to know him as a warm, fun, extraordinarily kind person who made all of our lives a little brighter,” they said.
Here are five things to know about Campbell:
1. Campbell helped create Obama’s honey ale beer
In 2011, inspired by home brewers across the country, Obama bought a home brewing kit for the White House kitchens, according to the White House Archives. No one in the kitchens had brewed beer before, but with some tips from other home brewers, they invented the White House Honey Brown Ale.
Campbell was one of the staff members who helped create the beer, and he’s featured in a White House YouTube video from 2013 where he can be seen brewing the ale.
According to the White House Archives, the honey ale was the first beer ever brewed on White House property, though George Washington was known to have brewed beer and distilled whiskey at Mount Vernon and Thomas Jefferson made wine at the White House.
The beer used honey from Michelle Obama’s South Lawn beehive . That same honey was later used by the chefs to create a White House Honey Porter and a White House Honey Blonde.
The recipe for the honey ale received a favorable review from The New York Times and Brooklyn Brewery.
“The aromas were floral with a touch of orange and a metallic note that I sometimes find in honey. On the palate, it was breezy, fresh, tangy and lightly bitter, not bone dry but not at all sweet. I could sense the honey in the round, rich texture of the beer: thickness without weight, like a chenin blanc wine,” the Times wrote.
Northern Brewer now sells a home brewing kit you can use to brew the honey ale.
2. Campbell owned a restaurant and worked for President Bush before working for the Obamas
According to a 2009 article in The Sun Sentinel , Campbell went to culinary school in Virginia and owned his own restaurant before applying for a job at the White House.
Campbell was first hired to work at the White House while George W. Bush was president, the newspaper reported. He was reportedly one of four cooks who were asked to stay on by the Obamas.
“I’m so proud of him, I can’t put it into words,” Campbell’s father, Trevor, told The Sun Sentinel in 2009, adding that his son would often cook for large family gatherings at the house growing up.
During both White House administrations, Campbell worked under Cristeta Comerford , the first woman and first Asian White House executive chef. She was appointed by Laura Bush in 2005 and still holds the position.
3. The Obamas asked Campbell to keep working for them after leaving the White House
In their statement Monday night, the Obamas said they liked Campbell’s cooking so much they asked him to stay on after leaving the White House.
“When we were getting ready to leave the White House, we asked Tafari to stay with us, and he generously agreed,” the Obamas said. “He’s been part of our lives ever since, and our hearts are broken that he’s gone.”
But it wasn’t just Campbell’s culinary skills that impressed the Obamas. They said in the statement that they loved his personality and the way he approached food.
“When we first met him, he was a talented sous chef at the White House — creative and passionate about food, and its ability to bring people together,” they said. “In the years that followed, we got to know him as a warm, fun, extraordinarily kind person who made all of our lives a little brighter.”
4. Campbell’s wife, who he shared twin boys with, owns a bakery and catering service
Campbell’s wife Sherise also works in the culinary arts. She owns a bakery and catering service called Sweet Sage Baking and Catering that serves northern Virginia and the Washington D.C. area.
Sherise said in a 2021 interview that she started her business after she reached a point in life where she wanted to achieve more for herself. She had been getting a lot of positive feedback from coworkers on her baking and cooking, which were skills she’d honed at a culinary school, and decided to continue in that direction.
“As long as I can remember, I was in the kitchen doing something – helping my mom, helping my grandmother,” she said. “When I was about seven I could fry an egg…And I always loved food.”
Campbell and his wife shared two twin boys, Xavier and Savin. It is unclear how old the boys are or whether they were with Campbell on Martha’s Vineyard when he died.
The Obamas referenced Sherise and the children in their statement.
“Today we join everyone who knew and loved Tafari – especially his wife Sherise and their twin boys, Xavier and Savin – in grieving the loss of a truly wonderful man,” they said.
5. Campbell showcased his culinary creations on Instagram
Campbell had an Instagram account called Thymeless Creations where he posted pictures and videos of the food he made, from Mayan chicken to peach fosters.
Some of the videos show him cooking, while others just show aesthetically pleasingly plated dishes.
On Campbell’s account, he called himself an amateur golfer and sometimes posted photos and videos of him golfing. He also liked to post pictures of himself with his wife, Sherise.
Campbell last posted on Instagram a few months ago.

Obamas' "beloved" chef found dead in Martha's Vineyard lake after going missing while paddleboarding
By Aliza Chasan
Updated on: July 25, 2023 / 10:29 AM EDT / CBS News
A missing paddleboarder whose body was recovered from a Martha's Vineyard lake Monday has been identified as a "beloved" employee of former President Barack Obama and his family.
Tafari Campbell, 45, worked in the White House and the Obamas considered him part of their family, the former president and first lady said in a joint statement. When the Obamas were getting ready to leave the White House, they asked him to keep working for them.
"He's been part of our lives ever since, and our hearts are broken that he's gone," the Obamas said.
The Obamas have a residence on Martha's Vineyard, but they were not at the home at the time of Campbell's death, Massachusetts State Police said. Campbell was visiting the area at the time of the incident.
Campbell, who was from Dumfries, Virginia, was seen struggling in the water of Edgartown Great Pond Sunday night before he went under, CBS Boston reported .
Searchers spent hours looking for Campbell on Sunday night, police said. The searchers included divers and flight and boat crews. His body was recovered on Monday morning from Edgartown Great Pond. The recovery was made approximately 100 feet from shore at a depth of about eight feet.
Campbell is survived by a wife and twin boys, the Obamas said.
"When we first met him, he was a talented sous chef at the White House — creative and passionate about food, and its ability to bring people together," the Obamas said in their joint statement. "In the years that followed, we got to know him as a warm, fun, extraordinarily kind person who made all of our lives a little brighter."
Campbell's wife posted Tuesday on Instagram, saying, "My heart is broken."
"My life and our family's life is forever changed. Please pray for me and our families as I deal with the loss of my husband."

Barack and Michelle Obama have paid tribute to their personal chef, Tafari Campbell, who died while paddleboarding near the couple's Martha's Vineyard estate in July.
Campbell, 45, worked at the Obama White House as a sous chef, and continued working as a personal chef for the Obama family after they left office.
Campbell had been visiting Martha's Vineyard and was near the Obamas' estate when he went missing while paddleboarding in Edgartown Great Pond on July 23, local officials said. Massachusetts State Police said they recovered Campbell's body the following morning approximately 100 feet from the shore.
Police said that the Obamas weren't present at their Massachusetts home at the time of the incident.
In social-media posts on Thursday, the Obamas shared photos of themselves with Campbell from their White House years.

"Tafari Campbell showed us what true character looks like," Barack captioned his Instagram post . "He believed that actions speak louder than words. And he used his immense gifts to bring people together, provide comfort, and spread joy. I'll miss him every day."
"I will miss my friend, Tafari...the emptiness is hard," the former first lady wrote in a separate Instagram post . "But I promise to stay strong, keep living, and honor your legacy in every way possible. Rest in peace, my brother."
The Obamas previously released a statement sent to Insider on July 24 after Campbell had been found dead.
"Tafari was a beloved part of our family. When we first met him, he was a talented sous chef at the White House — creative and passionate about food, and its ability to bring people together. In the years that followed, we got to know him as a warm, fun, extraordinarily kind person who made all of our lives a little brighter," the statement read.
"That's why, when we were getting ready to leave the White House, we asked Tafari to stay with us, and he generously agreed," it continued. "He's been part of our lives ever since, and our hearts are broken that he's gone."
Campbell is survived by his wife Sherise and their twin boys, according to the statement.
The Massachusetts State Police said that the chief medical examiner's office "found no evidence that the death was suspicious" after a post-mortem examination, the Associated Press reported.
The Massachusetts State Police did not immediately respond to Insider's request for comment.

Barack and Michelle Obama continue to mourn the loss of Tafari Campbell , their personal chef and close family friend, who drowned late last month near their Martha’s Vineyard home.
On Thursday, a day before his birthday, former President Obama uploaded an Instagram photo featuring himself, an unidentified woman and Campbell.
“Tafari Campbell showed us what true character looks like,” Obama wrote. “He believed that actions speak louder than words. And he used his immense gifts to bring people together, provide comfort, and spread joy. I’ll miss him every day.”
Michelle Obama also paid tribute to her “brother,” sharing a similar photo of herself on Instagram, posing with Campbell and her husband in the White House.
“I will miss my friend, Tafari…the emptiness is hard,” the former first lady wrote. “But I promise to stay strong, keep living, and honor your legacy in every way possible. Rest in peace, my brother.”
Campbell was the couple’s top chef during their time in the White House, and he took them up on their offer to continue working with the family following their departure at the end of Obama’s second term in early 2017, according to the Daily Mail .
The Virginia-based 45-year-old was said to have fallen off his paddle board, temporarily tried to keep afloat, and then slipped under the water around 7.46 p.m. on Sunday, July 23.
While Martha’s Vineyard police determined that Campbell’s death was an accident by drowning, questions remain as authorities allegedly suppress crucial details about the incident, citing an “ongoing investigation.”
Police have decided not to reveal the names of the only person who saw the accident, a woman paddle-boarding with Campbell. They’re also not sharing the identity of who called 911 to report the incident, a person believed to be a member of the Obamas’ Secret Service detail.
The female paddleboarder spoke with officials on the scene, who described her as being distraught but also appearing to be sober and clear-headed.
Fire departments from all across the island arrived in Edgartown’s Great Pond with boats and divers as the multi-agency search proceeded into the night. The Massachusetts State Police, the Dukes County Sheriff’s Department and the Coast Guard also joined the search efforts.
Campbell was believed to have submerged in one location, and the witness pointed rescuers in that direction. Crews scoured the area, including properties around the home, hoping he made it to the shore.
The Massachusetts Environmental Police used side-scan sonar from a boat to locate Campbell at 10 a.m. the following morning. Rescue crews recovered his body from water that was only eight feet deep. Police said he was not leashed to his board or wearing a life jacket.
The only pending matter is a toxicology analysis, which may reveal whether Campbell had drugs in his blood or experienced a medical emergency.
The Dukes County Sheriff’s Office, which fielded the initial 911 call, said an exemption to the public records law permits police to conceal any material that would endanger an ongoing investigation.
According to the Daily Mail, the supervisor of communications for the sheriff’s office refused to budge when pressed for more information. However, the head of the local First Amendment Coalition reportedly said police are misusing the provision, given they have previously ruled out any foul play.
Justin Silverman, executive director of the New England First Amendment Coalition, said the burden falls on law enforcement to demonstrate how disclosing specific information could endanger their investigation. They’re not doing that, violating the public records law, he said.
Police on Martha’s Vineyard also omitted the reason for the emergency call from their official logs. The log lists a cause for every other call received the night of the incident.
State police authorities are ensuring that other responding agencies follow their lead.
Sources involved in the initial multi-jurisdictional effort claimed state police have provided departments with refusal letters to send to the media to help them deal with the onslaught of inquiries.
Another public safety officer involved in the initial investigation said the state police were driving them “absolutely nuts,” as their actions gave the impression that something was going on when there wasn’t.
“As far as I know, some poor guy went out on a paddle board,” the source said, the Daily Mail reported, “and he wasn’t a great swimmer, and he drowned.”
Campbell could swim, though, as shown by a video he’d uploaded to social media of himself swimming laps.
Barack and Michelle Obama were not home at the time of the incident. The whereabouts of the Obama daughters, Sasha, 25, and Malia, 22, who were also on the island, are unknown.
“I know the optics of this look like it could be a lot more than that. I see what makes this a story. I know this has the recipe for a conspiracy,” the source noted, according to the Daily Mail. “But from what I have seen, there’s no drama to this. If you guys just had everything, you’d see there’s really nothing to this and move on. Instead, you’re left with what appears like a mystery.”

The Comprehensive Guide to Moscow Nightlife
- Posted on April 14, 2018 July 26, 2018
- by Kings of Russia
- 8 minute read
Moscow’s nightlife scene is thriving, and arguably one of the best the world has to offer – top-notch Russian women, coupled with a never-ending list of venues, Moscow has a little bit of something for everyone’s taste. Moscow nightlife is not for the faint of heart – and if you’re coming, you better be ready to go Friday and Saturday night into the early morning.
This comprehensive guide to Moscow nightlife will run you through the nuts and bolts of all you need to know about Moscow’s nightclubs and give you a solid blueprint to operate with during your time in Moscow.
What you need to know before hitting Moscow nightclubs
Prices in moscow nightlife.
Before you head out and start gaming all the sexy Moscow girls , we have to talk money first. Bring plenty because in Moscow you can never bring a big enough bankroll. Remember, you’re the man so making a fuzz of not paying a drink here or there will not go down well.
Luckily most Moscow clubs don’t do cover fees. Some electro clubs will charge 15-20$, depending on their lineup. There’s the odd club with a minimum spend of 20-30$, which you’ll drop on drinks easily. By and large, you can scope out the venues for free, which is a big plus.
Bottle service is a great deal in Moscow. At top-tier clubs, it starts at 1,000$. That’ll go a long way with premium vodka at 250$, especially if you have three or four guys chipping in. Not to mention that it’s a massive status boost for getting girls, especially at high-end clubs.
Without bottle service, you should estimate a budget of 100-150$ per night. That is if you drink a lot and hit the top clubs with the hottest girls. Scale down for less alcohol and more basic places.
Dress code & Face control
Door policy in Moscow is called “face control” and it’s always the guy behind the two gorillas that gives the green light if you’re in or out.
In Moscow nightlife there’s only one rule when it comes to dress codes:
You can never be underdressed.
People dress A LOT sharper than, say, in the US and that goes for both sexes. For high-end clubs, you definitely want to roll with a sharp blazer and a pocket square, not to mention dress shoes in tip-top condition. Those are the minimum requirements to level the playing field vis a vis with other sharply dressed guys that have a lot more money than you do. Unless you plan to hit explicit electro or underground clubs, which have their own dress code, you are always on the money with that style.
Getting in a Moscow club isn’t as hard as it seems: dress sharp, speak English at the door and look like you’re in the mood to spend all that money that you supposedly have (even if you don’t). That will open almost any door in Moscow’s nightlife for you.
Types of Moscow Nightclubs
In Moscow there are four types of clubs with the accompanying female clientele:
High-end clubs:
These are often crossovers between restaurants and clubs with lots of tables and very little space to dance. Heavy accent on bottle service most of the time but you can work the room from the bar as well. The hottest and most expensive girls in Moscow go there. Bring deep pockets and lots of self-confidence and you have a shot at swooping them.
Regular Mid-level clubs:
They probably resemble more what you’re used to in a nightclub: big dancefloors, stages and more space to roam around. Bottle service will make you stand out more but you can also do well without. You can find all types of girls but most will be in the 6-8 range. Your targets should always be the girls drinking and ideally in pairs. It’s impossible not to swoop if your game is at least half-decent.
Basic clubs/dive bars:
Usually spots with very cheap booze and lax face control. If you’re dressed too sharp and speak no Russian, you might attract the wrong type of attention so be vigilant. If you know the local scene you can swoop 6s and 7s almost at will. Usually students and girls from the suburbs.
Electro/underground clubs:
Home of the hipsters and creatives. Parties there don’t mean meeting girls and getting drunk but doing pills and spacing out to the music. Lots of attractive hipster girls if that is your niche. That is its own scene with a different dress code as well.
What time to go out in Moscow
Moscow nightlife starts late. Don’t show up at bars and preparty spots before 11pm because you’ll feel fairly alone. Peak time is between 1am and 3am. That is also the time of Moscow nightlife’s biggest nuisance: concerts by artists you won’t know and who only distract your girls from drinking and being gamed. From 4am to 6am the regular clubs are emptying out but plenty of people, women included, still hit up one of the many afterparty clubs. Those last till well past 10am.
As far as days go: Fridays and Saturdays are peak days. Thursday is an OK day, all other days are fairly weak and you have to know the right venues.
The Ultimate Moscow Nightclub List
Short disclaimer: I didn’t add basic and electro clubs since you’re coming for the girls, not for the music. This list will give you more options than you’ll be able to handle on a weekend.
Preparty – start here at 11PM
Classic restaurant club with lots of tables and a smallish bar and dancefloor. Come here between 11pm and 12am when the concert is over and they start with the actual party. Even early in the night tons of sexy women here, who lean slightly older (25 and up).
The second floor of the Ugolek restaurant is an extra bar with dim lights and house music tunes. Very small and cozy with a slight hipster vibe but generally draws plenty of attractive women too. A bit slower vibe than Valenok.
Very cool, spread-out venue that has a modern library theme. Not always full with people but when it is, it’s brimming with top-tier women. Slow vibe here and better for grabbing contacts and moving on.
High-end: err on the side of being too early rather than too late because of face control.
Secret Room
Probably the top venue at the moment in Moscow . Very small but wildly popular club, which is crammed with tables but always packed. They do parties on Thursdays and Sundays as well. This club has a hip-hop/high-end theme, meaning most girls are gold diggers, IG models, and tattooed hip hop chicks. Very unfavorable logistics because there is almost no room no move inside the club but the party vibe makes it worth it. Strict face control.
Close to Secret Room and with a much more favorable and spacious three-part layout. This place attracts very hot women but also lots of ball busters and fakes that will leave you blue-balled. Come early because after 4am it starts getting empty fast. Electronic music.
A slightly kitsch restaurant club that plays Russian pop and is full of gold diggers, semi-pros, and men from the Caucasus republics. Thursday is the strongest night but that dynamic might be changing since Secret Room opened its doors. You can swoop here but it will be a struggle.
Mid-level: your sweet spot in terms of ease and attractiveness of girls for an average budget.
Started going downwards in 2018 due to lax face control and this might get even worse with the World Cup. In terms of layout one of the best Moscow nightclubs because it’s very big and bottle service gives you a good edge here. Still attracts lots of cute girls with loose morals but plenty of provincial girls (and guys) as well. Swooping is fairly easy here.
I haven’t been at this place in over a year, ever since it started becoming ground zero for drunken teenagers. Similar clientele to Icon but less chic, younger and drunker. Decent mainstream music that attracts plenty of tourists. Girls are easy here as well.
Sort of a Coyote Ugly (the real one in Moscow sucks) with party music and lots of drunken people licking each others’ faces. Very entertaining with the right amount of alcohol and very easy to pull in there. Don’t think about staying sober in here, you’ll hate it.
Artel Bessonitsa/Shakti Terrace
Electronic music club that is sort of a high-end place with an underground clientele and located between the teenager clubs Icon and Gipsy. Very good music but a bit all over the place with their vibe and their branding. You can swoop almost any type of girl here from high-heeled beauty to coked-up hipsters, provided they’re not too sober.
Afterparty: if by 5AM you haven’t pulled, it’s time to move here.
Best afterparty spot in terms of trying to get girls. Pretty much no one is sober in there and savage gorilla game goes a long way. Lots of very hot and slutty-looking girls but it can be hard to tell apart who is looking for dick and who is just on drugs but not interested. If by 9-10am you haven’t pulled, it is probably better to surrender.
The hipster alternative for afterparties, where even more drugs are in play. Plenty of attractive girls there but you have to know how to work this type of club. A nicer atmosphere and better music but if you’re desperate to pull, you’ll probably go to Miks.
Weekday jokers: if you’re on the hunt for some sexy Russian girls during the week, here are two tips to make your life easier.
Chesterfield
Ladies night on Wednesdays means this place gets pretty packed with smashed teenagers and 6s and 7s. Don’t pull out the three-piece suit in here because it’s a “simpler” crowd. Definitely your best shot on Wednesdays.
If you haven’t pulled at Chesterfield, you can throw a Hail Mary and hit up Garage’s Black Music Wednesdays. Fills up really late but there are some cute Black Music groupies in here. Very small club. Thursday through Saturday they do afterparties and you have an excellent shot and swooping girls that are probably high.
Shishas Sferum
This is pretty much your only shot on Mondays and Tuesdays because they offer free or almost free drinks for women. A fairly low-class club where you should watch your drinks. As always the case in Moscow, there will be cute girls here on any day of the week but it’s nowhere near as good as on the weekend.
In a nutshell, that is all you need to know about where to meet Moscow girls in nightlife. There are tons of options, and it all depends on what best fits your style, based on the type of girls that you’re looking for.
