Cruise Guru Review: Is it worth booking through?

Anthony

  • Travel Tips

Cruise Guru is a popular Australian website for booking cruises. They often offer some of the best deals on cruises. But are there any hidden catches to booking through a travel agent like Cruise Guru? Here’s my review:

Note – This isn’t a sponsored review and I’m not getting paid by CruiseGuru. This is simply based on my own travel experience.

Cruise Guru Review

Pros and Cons of Booking Through Cruise Guru

Before booking through Cruise Guru here are some of the pros and cons:

Cruise Guru Can List Better Prices

Unlike airlines, cruise companies still offer discounts to travel agents who can pass these deals onto you. When browsing through Cruise Guru I was able to find cheaper prices for certain cruises compared to searching direct with the cruise line.

This doesn’t mean Cruise Guru always has the best price and it is worth shopping around as different booking sites may have better deals. In general I’ve the deals and prices on Cruise Guru to often be the best.

Last Minute Cruise Deals

Cruise Guru has a a dedicated section for Last Minute Cruise Deals. Cruise Lines do seem to offer discounts for last minute cruises where as airlines do the opposite and bump the price up.

For example when putting together this post, I saw a P&O cruise leaving in a week for just $376 for 3 nights. While obviously you’ll spend a bit more on drinks , this will still end up being a really cheap holiday in the current economy!

the cruise guru

I wasn’t able to book this cruise through P&O’s website, so this is definitely one advantage to using a website like Cruise Guru.

Exclusive Offers

Travel Agents do have exclusive deals on cruises. Cruise Lines do offer deals to travel agents. And it does make it worth booking through a travel agent. You’ll be able to get extra onboard spending money, free drinks packages and more. The deals available will depend on the time of year and cruise line.

If a cruise line has a special deal available on their own website, I’ve found that Cruise Guru does seem to offer it when booking through them as well.

Cancellation Fees

One downside of booking with a travel agent like Cruise Guru over booking direct with the cruise line are the additional fees if you need to cancel a booking. Cruise Guru charges a $110 per person fee on top of the fee the cruise line charges. If you book direct with the cruise company you’d only need to pay their fee.

You Can Enter Your Loyalty Number

Cruise Lines run loyalty programs where you get rewarded the more your cruise with special perks. If you’re worried you won’t get credit by booking through a travel agent, that’s not the case. On CruiseGuru you can enter in your loyalty or passenger number and this will be part of your booking.

Is Cruise Guru Legit?

Yes, Cruise Guru is a legit booking site. They are an accredited travel agent in Australia.

Is it Worth Booking through CruiseGuru.com.au

If you can get a good deal on CruiseGuru I think it’s definitely worth booking through. When I comes to flights, my recommendation post covid has been to book direct with the airline because it’s easier and cheaper to change itineraries. But this isn’t as much of an issue with Cruise bookings. Cruise Guru does charge a cancellation fee on top of the fee the cruise line will charge you which is one downside.

Sefton Monk

Sefton Monk is a British tech guru and CEO of the world's first fully bookable cruise app, My Kind of Cruise , with over 125,000 downloads and an average customer age of 38.

You can search, compare, and book a cruise in less than two minutes on the cruise app, with repeat customers booking even faster, at just 45 seconds.

With 65% of downloads generated via social media and 30% of users coming from TikTok, this is a true 21st-century revolution for the cruise industry.

I sat down with Sefton to discuss how My Kind of Cruise came to fruition, his upcoming plans, and his predictions for the future of cruising.

What is My Kind of Cruise?

" My Kind of Cruise is the world's first cruise app that seamlessly integrates search, comparison, and booking for cruises, all within a super user-friendly interface.

But what I think truly sets us apart is our traveler demographic sweet spot, with a 38-year-old average booking age," said Sefton.

"Half of our users are cruise newbies, and the other half are firmly rooted in the millennial and Gen-Z demographic — and that's not just a coincidence.

My Kind of Cruise understands that the cruise industry has a perception problem among younger holidaymakers. We're shattering those outdated stereotypes by making cruise booking accessible and convenient," he added.

Samsung Is Giving A New Feature Boost To Millions Of Galaxy Phones

Biden wins michigan primary—but thousands vote ‘uncommitted’ in protest, trump defeats haley in michigan republican primary—on track to clinch nomination next month, what was your inspiration for my kind of cruise.

"My conversations with major cruise lines and online travel agencies revealed quite a startling truth — that they're struggling to attract new blood, especially with millennials and Gen Z.

These kinds of tech-savvy travelers crave convenience, personalization, and transparency, and sadly, those qualities are glaringly absent in the traditional booking model," said Sefton.

"While over 90% of cruises are still sold over the phone through call centers, 66% of millennials use apps to book their vacations.

Realizing this convinced me that a cruise booking app could solve these problems for the cruise industry, similar to what Airbnb did for the holiday rental sector," he added.

What is your personal vision for the brand?

"The bottom line, Lewis — I want My Kind of Cruise to become the de facto place to search, compare, and book your cruises.

I want to increase the overall travel market share for cruises and widen the cruise traveler demographic even further, making cruises more accessible for holidaymakers," said Sefton.

How many people are using your cruise app? Who is your audience?

"As we speak, we have 320,000 users across both the app and website, with an average age of 38.

Initially, we targeted a younger traveler, with millennials and Gen Z making up around 50% of our users. But our user base has actually proved to be surprisingly diversified with more traditional cruising age groups loving our easy-to-use technology too," said Sefton.

"Our booking users have ranged from 21-year-olds all the way to 91-year-olds, and most excitingly, half of our users are new to cruising!" he added.

How will My Kind of Cruise evolve in the future?

"By the end of 2025, we plan to fully launch in the USA and integrate flights, hotels, and other services into the app," said Sefton.

How will the cruise industry evolve over the next ten years?

"Cruising is rapidly expanding its reach and diversifying its offering, and I think it'll continue to do so as the cruise lines move away from what was traditionally seen as an older traveler's preserve.

There's a huge push in the industry to attract new customers from the beach and family holiday sector, and this will continue as ships, facilities, and entertainment evolve to offer something for all of the traditional leisure market," said Sefton.

"You'll be able to find a ship to suit almost every type of traveler, from young to old, families to empty nesters, adventure seekers to traditional luxury, spas, and beyond.

Itineraries will also continue to evolve with a growing focus on sustainable tourism and an eye on the good and bad impact that opening up these fantastic destinations can have on the very areas that cruising can reach," he added.

Photo by Phill Jackson/Royal Princess & Princess Cruises via Getty Images

"In tandem with this, I'm confident that environmental concerns will be at the forefront of the next generation of ships as the drive to minimize the impact of travel and tourism increases.

We should always want to educate and broaden horizons while striving to leave as light a footprint in the sand as possible for our future generations." Sefton concluded.

‘Help me help you’: Carnival Cruise expert shows why you shouldn’t sneak gummies onto the ship

'dogs don't smell cart oil.'.

Grace Rampaul

Posted on Feb 7, 2024   Updated on Feb 14, 2024, 12:57 pm CST

Oh ship! It’s a week before the cruise you so desperately need and you realize you forgot to factor the daily  “drink package,” price to your budget. No big deal, you think to yourself, you’ll just sneakily fill up some water bottles with your alcohol of choice, pack it in your luggage, and you’re off.

Before you know it, you’ll be a sail-ebrity; your nifty out-of-the-box thinking saved your wallet hundreds, and everyone on that ship will be jealous.

Wrong.

In a TikTok posted on Jan. 9, influencer @mandythecruiseplanner advises you to not do that. With over 175,000 views and 5,739 likes, the self-proclaimed “cruise addict” warns viewers of the hair-raising truths behind cruise-smuggling culture.

“I feel the need to have a PSA and have a heart to heart with all the people who like to cruise,” Mandy began.

Leaning forward into her phone, the cruise guru firmly tells audiences that while it may seem common for people to successfully sneak booze onto a sea voyage, it is just as common to be caught.

“You’re probably not gonna see those videos,” Mandy says. “ No. 1 because of the illegal factor, No. 2 the shame of having gotten caught, No. 3 they are trying a lot of the time to get reimbursed via insurance.”

Claiming that people are less likely to share when they are apprehended, Mandy believes that cruise goers need to understand that there can be serious consequences for their misdemeanors.

“If you get caught you could very much go to jail, “ Mandy says. “You could get banned from the cruise line, you could get kicked off your cruise, it could be very, very costly and very expensive and I promise you it happens every day.”

And this goes for narcotics too.

“I know this app is full of people who have put videos where they’ve smuggled alcohol on or where they talk about how they’ve hid their THC gummies with their vitamin gummies,” Mandy acknowledges.

Prominent cruise lines, such as Carnival Cruises , have addressed this on their “Frequently Asked Questions,” page as well to assure there is no miscommunication or confusion between cruise and cruise-goer.

“Illegal narcotics/drugs including synthetic, designer drugs, marijuana, cannabis and cannabis derivatives such as Cannabidiol (CBD) items which may be labeled as medical marijuana are not allowed on board,” Carnival Cruise states.

Yet, regardless of it being spelled out, voyagers still continue to try their luck. Mandy tells every voyager who reaches out to her the same piece of information: Don’t do it, it’s illegal.

“Unless you are willing to seriously risk being permanently banned, potentially going to jail, if it’s drug related, unless you’re willing to lose all of your cruise money, it’s really not worth it. It’s really not,” Mandy says.

In November, Carnival banned a woman for life who snuck CBD gummies aboard, per the Washington Post . With 0.3% THC, CBD gummies are legal nationwide .

If you’re caught with marijuana, you can expect to be “ detained, disembarked, and/or arrested .”

But as Mandy continues on her precautionary tale, commenters are quick to point out that regardless of her advising, they are going to continue bringing prohibited items.

@mandythecruisepla Help me help you. If the cruise line says “No”, please don’t take the risk of sneaking it onboard. #cruisetok #contraband #carnivalcruise #royalcaribbean #rumrunners ♬ original sound – mandythecruiseplanner

“A gambler only tells you when they win. Same concept,” one commentator says. Believing that Mandy is purely bluffing.

Some viewers have even gone as far as suggesting tips and tricks in the comment section on what exactly can be detected during the boarding process prior to embarkment.

“Dogs don’t smell cart oil, put it in your makeup bag and the battery in your carry on” another commenter suggested.

While Mandy understands the impulse to carry on such products, at the end of the day she believes her job is to educate and warn those looking forward to their next cruise.

“I care about you, I want to see you have a really amazing vacation, I want to see you not lose all your money. Anyway, that’s it,” Mandy concludes.

Cruise cabins and suites

Cruise ship rooms, floor plans, photos.

CruiseMapper's cabin and suites section allows you to explore cruise staterooms by ship. Each page provides extensive information on all passengers accommodations on a particular vessel, including floor plans, room types and categories (grades used upon booking), cabin sizes, deck location. Also provided is an extensive review of all ticket price inclusive en-suite amenities, along with furniture details and additional / bonus perks (if available).

CruiseMapper logo

Here you will find brief descriptions by category of all stateroom types that can be found on cruise ship deck plans . You will find more information and many useful tips on staterooms at our best and worst cabins article. Here you can search for a particular ship (via the above search bar) or you can skip the introduction (explanations) and go down directly to our list of large passenger ships' cabin pages .

Cruise staterooms booking rates are usually based on deck location. Lower-deck accommodations are the cheapest. Midship rooms cost more. Balcony staterooms and Suites located aft or forward are the most expensive. Most cruise companies (especially those with large-sized vessels in the fleets) divide the main cabin types into subcategories. These grades are marked with numbers (like for balcony cabins - B1, B2, B3, B4) and are displayed on the deck layouts with different colors.

Cruise ship suites

Cruise suite accommodations are premium grades cabins. They are usually larger in comparison to balcony staterooms and feature more amenities. As a rule, suites have a full-size bathtub, larger shower, bigger closets and balcony (some have 2 private balconies). Amenities include coffee makers, premium sound systems, large-size TVs, complimentary butler service.

Loft Suites (aka Duplex Suites)

Loft Suites are "duplex suites" (on two levels) and available on the world's largest passenger ships of Royal Caribbean's Oasis-class and Quantum-class. The following layout is of Harmony of the Seas and its largest accommodation - the Royal Loft Suite.

Grand Suite

Twin beds in this type of cabin can be joined in a king bed. Grand Suites have also a double sofa bed and large private balcony, sitting area with 2-armchairs and a coffee table, desk, dressing area with vanity, walk-in closet, safe box, TV, phone, refrigerator, mini-bar, private bath with whirlpool tub and shower, patio chair and table, balcony lounge chair, pillow menu, bathrobes, hairdryer. See below the magnificent Oceania Marina ship's Owner Suite plan.

Captain Suite

Captains Suite accommodations have a huge 220 ft2 (20,5 m2) separate bedroom, while the living area is sized 290 ft2 (27 m2). There are 2 upper beds and a sofa bed, private bathroom with whirlpool hot tub and glass shower, safe, TV and phone, mini-bar, bathrobes, hairdryer.

A table and 3 patio chairs are on the balcony.

Owners Suite

Owner's Suites are some of the most luxurious accommodations at sea. They usually feature two separate bedrooms, private balcony (with luxury lounge furniture, even dining area and hot tub), living room (with sofa bed), luxury bathroom (with whirlpool bathtub and separate shower), second bathroom (WC), dining room, dressing area. Some Owner's Suites (like NCL's) can accommodate up to 10 passengers when connected to an adjacent Suite.

Ocean Suite

OS stands for "Ocean Suite" and category SS is "Spa Suite", recently changed to Junior Suite. These cabins have: twin beds that convert to king, sitting area with armchair and coffee table, sofa, dressing area with vanity, large balcony, wall safe, 2 big closets, mini-bar, refrigerator, private whirlpool bath with tub and shower, television and phone, balcony lounge chair, patio chair and table, pillow menu, bathrobes, hairdryer.

2-Bedroom Mozart Suite (largest stateroom on a riverboat)

World's largest accommodation found on a riverboat is Riverside Mozart 's French Balcony Suite. The vessel has two such accommodations, each sized 885 ft2 / 82 m2. Must be noted, that the stateroom is combined with an adjacent French Balcony cabin.

Penthouse Suite

Penthouse Suites have a twin beds configuration (beds can convert to queen). The other features are a large balcony, dressing area with vanity, sitting area with armchair and coffee table, wall safe, mini bar, private bath with whirlpool tub and shower, television and phone, refrigerator, bathrobes and hairdryer. Some cabins are without whirlpool tub, sofa or coffee table.

Balcony staterooms

Most balcony cruise ship cabins feature floor-ceiling sliding glass doors leading to a private step-out veranda. The balcony also is furnished with a table and pair of chairs/loungers. Standard balconies are separated by dividers. As sizes, balcony cabins on cruise ships vary, with those on Princess and NCl ships being among the smallest compared to other big-ship lines. In our cruise deck plans, we also list room sizes and the size of the balcony. Balcony – Apart from the balcony they can offer You twin beds that can be converted to King-size bed. Balconies also provide sitting area with chair and coffee table and private bath with shower, as well as closet/wardrobe, electronic safe box, mini bar, television and phone, sofa, bathrobes, hairdryer. Most verandas are between 30-60 ft2 ( approx 3-6 m2). Below are shown the layouts of the Anthem ship's Deluxe and Accessible balcony cabins.

Premium Balcony

Premium Balcony cabins also have twin beds that convert to King-size, their wraparound balcony enfolds the stateroom. Balcony's windows are often floor-ceiling and wall-to-wall.

Cove Balcony Staterooms

Cove balconies, unlike Balconies, have two patio chairs and a table. The rest of the stuff is identical. First of all-balcony, and again twin beds that convert to king, sofa, private bath with shower, safe, closet, mini bar, television and phone, sitting area with chair and coffee table, bathrobes and hairdryer.

Cove Balcony rooms are CCL-Carnival's specialty, available on some of the "Fun Ships", and are interesting because they are located on lower decks (thus closer to waterline).

Oceanview staterooms

Oceanview cabins: as sizes are similar to Interior staterooms on cruise ships, but each of them has a Porthole or normal window (both types do not open). Their window sizes also vary by line and ship. On some ocean ships and some luxury river ships, such staterooms feature floor-ceiling windows. Oceanview rooms' window sizes are usually 4x3 ft (1,2x0,9 m). As furniture, Oceanview cruise cabins have twin beds that convert to King-size, sofa, TV and phone, sitting area, safe, mini bar, private bath with shower, and also a washroom with sink and a junior tub, bathrobes and a hairdryer and of course a picture window. You should take a look at the cruise ship deck plans again as Cabins of 5A category have two porthole windows. Unlike deluxe, there is no washroom with sink and junior tub. Below are the layouts of Ovation of the Seas Oceanview cabins (categories standard, large, and superior).

Deluxe Oceanview

These cabins have no balconies but still can offer a marvelous view through their picture window as well as twin beds that convert to King-size. However, beds in Category 6N can't be joined (to King) and sleeps max 5 people.

Other amenities include sofabed, TV, phone, seating, safe, mini-bar, a bathroom with shower, a washroom (with junior tub), bathrobes, hairdryer.

Scenic Oceanview

The interior is the same - twin beds convertible to King-size, picture window, sofa, TV, phone, seating, safe, mini-bar, bath with shower, washroom with sink and junior tub, bathrobes, hairdryer.

The difference is that Scenic Oceanviews are larger.

Inside staterooms

Inside cruise ship cabins' best feature is their price - you book them with the line's cheapest rates available. These cruise accommodations don't offer window views. Still, on some of the newest cruise ships of Royal Caribbean and Disney, there are categories Interior staterooms with a "virtual window", which is a large LED screen displaying outside cam views. The screen doesn't have TV functions.

On some Carnival ships, there are Inside cabins with a "French Balcony" (with opening glass doors). Also, some "interior staterooms" are actually Oceanview (with a non-opening window), but since their views are obstructed, they are booked as Interior. On Royal Caribbean ships, some Inside cabins have a window looking out to the ship's interior promenade (street)

Inside cruise cabins are fitted with twin beds (convertible to King or Queen), private bathroom (shower), sitting area. Next are shown the layouts of Interior rooms on Harmony OTS .

Small Interior Stateroom (as the name implies) is the least spacious standard cabin category on cruise ships. These cabins have two beds – (upper and lower), private bath (WC/shower), a small sitting area.

Single cabins (Studios)

Single occupancy staterooms could be either Inside or Balcony. Some river cruise lines even offer single suites (booking with single occupancy rates). The most famous liner having plenty of single cabins (designed specifically for solo travelers) is Norwegian Epic .

This huge vessel has a total of 128 "Studios".

Next are shown layouts of Quantum OTS single-occupancy cabins (balcony and interior).

Connecting cabins (for large families)

The next layout shows RCI's "Family Connected Junior Suite" plan ( Quantum OTS ). Ship's main cabin grades (Balcony, Oceanview, Inside) are all combined here into a 10-person "Family Suite". The layout also shows the exact positioning of furniture, 3 baths (1 with hot tub), large seating area, 2 double-sofabeds, 2 connecting balconies.

How to choose cabins on cruise ships?

If you are planning a cruise, booking a cabin is certainly as important as picking up the cruise line (brand) or the boat. Before you take that decision, consider some issues related to your own personality and the other people traveling with you.

  • The first important thing you have to be honest with your conscious is whether you can get seasick .
  • Secondly, what type of person you are and what exactly do you intend to do onboard? Are you a party type or you just would like to spend several calm days at sea, away from the office jungle on land. Would you enjoy the pool with its all opportunities for contacts or you would rather have a rest lying at a balcony?
  • No matter the stateroom type, it could still be noisy or make you seasick. The more central and lower position your cabin has, the more stable it is.
  • In case you and the rest of the family members / friends are thin or you just don't intend to spend too much time in the cabin, you can pick a small one. Usually, staterooms are able to house no more than 4 people. Two passengers pay full fares and the other receive discounted rates.
  • If you need stateroom for 4+ passengers, connecting cabins are the best option, and it will cost you less than a suite. Bathtub-fitted cabins are not so many per vessel. All cruise deck plans show such information (bathtub, sofabed, double bed, bunk beds, etc).

Noise issues - which cabins on the ship to avoid?

If you are a party type and louder sounds are not bothering, everything would be OK. If you organize a family voyage, however, you should look for a cabin away from the noisiest areas in the cruise ship deck plans. The first thing to look for in the cruise ship plan is the engine room location. Along with the noises, there are also vibrations.

Staterooms under discos, sport playgrounds, gym centers are usually very noisy. Cabins under Lido Deck (aka Pool Deck) are also among those to avoid. The buffet restaurant on this deck generates noises from moving tables and chairs and tableware. Staircases are also very noisy.

Take a good look at the cruise ship deck plan - room location is crucial!

Cabin's deck location is of great importance. Lower and more central-positioned accommodations are more stable. However, "cool cabins" are usually on higher decks, which means spending more money won't necessarily save you from seasickness.

Stern cabins (aft) have the largest balconies. Forward suites provide the same view as from the Navigation Bridge (wheelhouse). Some cabins are with limited / obstructed seaview due to lifeboats or other equipment.

Guarantee staterooms - take your chance!

If you are not set on selecting something particular and location is not a priority, you should not investigate the cruise ship deck plan so cautiously. The so-called ''guarantee'' cabin grades can turn to be among the best booking options. The "guarantee stateroom" booking allows you to pick up a category, not a cabin. In case the category is sold out you'll be proposed a higher category lodging. The first cabins to be booked are both the cheapest and the most expensive ones, be aware when you choose to test your luck. However, it could be a bit risky so it's more reasonable to get back to the cruise ship deck plans.

Shipboard facilities

If want to cruise with your children you'd better book a stateroom close to kids entertainment facilities. Cruise ship deck plans can once again help you to choose from the many opportunities created to meet passengers' requirements. Spa cabins are recently available for instance. Passengers get free access to the steam room and other connected facilities. These cabins are of course close to the SPA and you can move between in your bathrobe only.

NCL's The Haven and MSC's Yacht Club accommodations are located within an exclusive complex and offer ''ship within ship'' amenities and services. Passengers (who can afford them) enjoy private sundecks with swimming pools and jacuzzis and exclusive facilities like restaurants, bar lounges, gyms and spas.

Prefabricated cruise ship cabin

On May 24, 2016, a new "Lightweight Composite Cabin" design was unveiled in Southampton, England. The innovation was funded by the UK Government. Involved in the cabin's designing, engineering, manufacturing and furbishing were the companies Carnival UK ( Carnival Corporation 's subsidiary), Gurit Ltd (global composite materials supplier), Lloyd's Register Group Ltd (technical / business services, maritime classification company), PE Composites Ltd (composite designer / manufacturer), Trimline Ltd (marine interior refurbishment specialist) and the University of Southampton.

The new modular cabin prototype is half the weight of a typical cruise room. It also fully complies with the FTP Code's requirements (International Code for the Application of Fire Test Procedures). Reducing the ship's topdecks weight is an important issue for naval architects as the trend for building large-capacity cruise vessels continues. The new (prefabricated) module's halved weight opens up opportunities for adding more passenger rooms to newbuild ships, without adding to the ship's DWT weight.

How I worked my way to the top in the 200-year-old, male-dominated cruise industry–and brought other women on board

the cruise guru

I vividly remember a day during my tenure as president and CEO of Celebrity Cruises when I was visiting yet another amazing part of the world on one of our ships. I was hosting a “Celebrate with the CEO” cruise, and we were sailing the spice route, which included countries in the Middle East and India. It was a fascinating itinerary visiting many wonderful countries, and of course, engaging with diverse cultures and people. When we arrived in Mumbai, I was excited to get off the ship to meet our driver and guide for our tour of the city. I walked up to her to get into the car, and she very politely said to me “I am waiting for the CEO.” I replied, “I am the CEO.”

The look on her face was priceless. She then said, “They didn’t tell me it was a woman.” I just smiled. It was not the first or the last time someone was surprised I was both the CEO and a woman. We had a wonderful day and at the end of our tour, she asked me for one of my cards so she could show her daughter when she got home. She wanted her daughter to know she could do anything when she grew up. That touched me because that’s exactly what I had been trying to do ever since I became the president and CEO of one of the most popular cruise lines in the world.

I took the helm of Celebrity Cruises in December 2014, 30 years after I started in the company as a sales rep. So much had changed in the cruise industry and our company over that 30-year period. New and innovative ships, explosive growth, and tens of millions more consumers opting for cruise vacations. But one thing hadn’t really changed in all that time: the gender imbalance in the key operations and leadership roles on board ships. Especially on our bridges–where the captain steers the ship. And it was my mission to change it.

I had been in other positions at the company throughout my career where I was the first woman. But when I was appointed president and CEO, I knew my role would forever be changed. I’d have the power and influence to be the biggest changemaker there had ever been in company history, a role I didn’t take lightly.

The day I was appointed, my phone was ringing off the hook. Everyone was so interested to know what it felt like to be the first woman in this role. I was overwhelmed, and to be honest, confused by all the hype! I didn’t place a lot of emphasis on my gender. I just worked hard, smart, and fearlessly for three decades, eventually earning the role of CEO. But later I realized…they were right. How important it was and what an honor it would be to be able to use my gender to make meaningful change and bring other women along with me. And that I did.

The first, and most impactful of my many moves disrupting the 200-year-old cruise industry was appointing Captain Kate McCue . McCue was, and continues to be, a beacon for other women, beloved by guests and crew, and everyone who meets her. The first, and still only American woman at the helm of a mega cruise ship. The first woman to start up a new ship and take it out of a shipyard. The first woman captain for Celebrity Cruises. The most followed Captain on social media. She represented the beginning of a sea change for Celebrity.

I continued to collaborate methodically with like-minded men to grow the number of women on our bridges from 3% to 33% over nine years. The average percentage of women in all maritime is 2%. Most of the men I surrounded myself with believe in gender equality because they have wives, daughters, mothers, and sisters. For so many years, our male captains didn’t believe their daughters would be able to follow in their footsteps. That’s not the case anymore. I showed many of our male captains that yes, their daughters can do what their dads do. I will never forget the day I walked onto the bridge of Celebrity Edge with the ship’s godmother, Malala Yousafzai . The captain of the ship was on the bridge with his wife and three-year-old daughter. And his daughter was dressed in a Captain’s uniform. Just a couple of years earlier, that never would have happened. Progress.

My career had so many firsts. So many things I look back on and am so proud of. Brand transformation, financial performance transformation, and gender equality transformation. We don’t get many opportunities in our lives to make meaningful change. When these opportunities present themselves, we must make the most of them. Being a woman was a superpower and I used it to do good. It was good for gender equality, and it was good for business.

Years later, the story of the Mumbai tour guide asking for my card to show her daughter that women can do anything still empowers me. It’s a reminder for everyone that we can be anything we want to be when we grow up, as long as we continue to make waves wherever we are.

Cruising into a Career

It was 1981. Recently out of college, single and making decent money, I was looking for a fun vacation option for myself. A savvy travel agent recommended a Caribbean cruise on Carnival. She said I’d have no problem traveling solo; that cruising offered a social, convivial environment; and that I’d enjoy the food and the other singles I’d meet. She was right on all counts, while unknowingly leading me to a new career path.

Yes, I found romance aboard Carnival Cruise Line’s Carnivale that summer, but more importantly, my love affair with cruising itself was kindled aboard that ship.

I still remember the itinerary: roundtrip Miami to Samana, Dominican Republic, San Juan, Puerto Rico and St. Thomas, Virgin Islands. It was a beach-intensive, snorkel-heavy, party-hearty schedule, with a little shopping thrown in. Back aboard, the food was good and plentiful, the crew and staff were happy, and we passengers reveled in what we had just “discovered”: that cruising offered the best vacation value of all.

I paid about $1,200 for that one-week cruise, including roundtrip airfare from LA – Miami. Today, 33 years later, that same deal can be had on several cruise lines sailing in the Caribbean.  How’s that for a value proposition?

What became evident to me on that first cruise – aside from loving the experience – was what still drives me to recommend cruising today. Included in the basic cruise fare are accommodations, attentive, pampering service, most meals and snacks, entertainment and transportation between ports – all from a low rate of $50 per day, per person, double occupancy.

Essentially, for less than a nightly room at a midscale hotel, a cruise guest receives the added value of meals, entertainment and service unequaled at a land-based resort, while never worrying about what to do/where to eat/how to get there.

That, in a nutshell, describes modern cruising’s value. But since only about 25% of the American public have cruised, it’s obvious that the lines haven’t done a good enough marketing job. Now, with new ad campaigns launching in consumer media, that’s about to change.

It's not a 'shoot-from-the-hip decision': What to know about world cruises

the cruise guru

Brandee Lake’s home address changes nearly every day.

The 46-year-old boarded Royal Caribbean International’s Ultimate World Cruise in December and will live on the line’s Serenade of the Seas for the nine-month journey .

Lake, who previously lived in Los Angeles, gave up her apartment and left a job in advertising and marketing to travel full time, embarking on a 274-night sailing to more than 60 countries alongside her sister and parents.

“I always tease that I only worked to travel anyway, that I worked to support my travel habit,” she told USA TODAY. “So, to me, it was a no-brainer.”

Lake, who had already visited 77 countries and lived abroad, decided to set sail and see even more of the world, and her parents gifted the cruise to her and her sister.

Videos about the Ultimate World Cruise proliferated on TikTok following its departure from Miami, but it’s not the first cruise of its kind. World cruises offer passengers an easy way to travel the globe, delivering them to a range of far-flung destinations.

But there’s more to booking those trips than other kinds of cruises. Here’s what to know:

What are world cruises?

World cruises visit multiple continents, usually no less than three. The itineraries last between three and five months on average but can be longer, according to Joanna Kuther, a travel agent and owner of Port Side Travel Consultants.

“You're in your room, and that's where you're going to be the whole time, and you're not flying around and packing and unpacking,” she said. While at a resort, guests might meet one another in passing, world cruise passengers are on the same itinerary for an extended period, which Kuther said can be “such a bonding experience.”

“I mean, I guess it could go sideways if it was horrible people,” she said. “But I think people usually find their people.”

For travelers who can’t – or would rather not – spend so much time at sea, many cruise lines also sell segments of those itineraries separately. That allows guests to embark for days, weeks, or months at a time and adds new faces to the mix.

World cruises also often take place on older ships, particularly on mainstream lines. "I don't think they'd want one of their newest ships out of commission for months," Kuther added.

How do cruise lines plan world cruises?

Mapping out so many months at sea can take years. Luxury line Silversea Cruises , for example, plans its world cruises three to four years in advance, according to spokesperson Brad Ball.

“Silversea has a team of destination experts that select destinations that are unique and culturally diverse,” he said in an email. The line, also part of Royal Caribbean Group, sailed its first world cruise in 2007 and works to create destination themes and make segments distinct.

Silversea’s 140-day The Curious and the Sea voyage aboard Silver Dawn in 2026, for example, features a 28-day exploration of French Polynesia and the South Pacific, a semi-circumnavigation of Australia over 21 days and more.

“We try to provision food items locally and source goods from the different regions we travel to as much as possible,” Ball added.

Michael Bayley, president and CEO of Royal Caribbean International, said the cruise line took great pains to anticipate guests’ needs on the Ultimate World Cruise, even putting a dentist on board.

The line also threw a gala dinner for guests before they departed. “I said, ‘The only one thing that we've failed to do, and I apologize now, is we failed to put a marriage counselor on board,’ ” he said during a press briefing last month on the line’s newest ship, Icon of the Seas .

When should I book a world cruise?

Many cruise lines offer only one world cruise a year, and staterooms go fast. Michael Bray, owner of Braycation Travel, likened it to “a really cool house coming on the market.”

“The suites or larger cabins could go the fastest because folks want space,” he added. Bray said his clients have booked between 1 ½ to 2 ½ years out.

“People know they have to plan to be with their homes for six months,” Bray said. “They've got to shut down their homes. You've got to figure out medications, mail, family, so this is not a shoot-from-the-hip decision.”

Lake, the Ultimate World Cruise passenger, said she stored some of her belongings with a friend and packed the rest of what she needed.

Tips for taking a long cruise: What to know about sailing for 6 months or more

World cruises from lines like Cunard Line have long been popular, Kuther noted, but in recent years, more brands have leaned.

Royal Caribbean’s nine-month sailing is its first foray into the category, and Azamara is currently sailing its first world voyage since becoming an independent cruise line in 2021. Princess Cruises, which operated its first world cruise in 2008, also plans to sail its longest voyage ever (116 days) in 2025.

Kuther attributed that to a rise in remote-friendly jobs like content creation , particularly among younger people. “This ability to travel and work from wherever you are has opened up such a younger demographic and also more demand,” she said.

Ball at Silversea echoed that. “Over the past 15 years, we have seen increased demand for World Cruises, both from retired travelers as well as from working professionals and digital nomads,” he said. “Due to the advance of improved cellphone connectivity technology and onboard internet, more travelers are able to work remotely and better able to take longer voyages.”

How much do world cruises cost?

Starting prices for world cruises on mainstream lines can range from around $25,000 per person to $60,000 depending on the length, Kuther said. Luxury world cruises are likely to cost upward of $70,000.

Those prices will also likely include more than a typical cruise fare.

The fare for the entire Ultimate World Cruise – which started at around $54,000 for the full nine months – included gratuities, business class flights, Wi-Fi, wash-and-fold laundry service and more, according to Royal Caribbean’s website .

Luxury lines, which already bundle more costs with their base fares , may throw in extras too. Ball said travelers who book Silversea’s 2026 world cruise get $1,000 in onboard credit per person (up to $2,000 per suite), a spa treatment and other amenities.

For Lake, the trip is a chance to see new places – like Antarctica , which she “always wanted to do” but never thought she would – while spending quality time with family. No matter where they are in the world, she has a family dinner with her parents and sister every night.

“I think it's something that I'll look back on and never forget,” she said.

As for work after the cruise, she has no definitive plans, but has been posting about the trip on TikTok and is "enjoying the creator space."

"I am seeing where this adventure and the world takes me," Lake said.

Warner Bros. Spends Big: ‘Joker 2’ Budget Hits $200 Million, Lady Gaga’s $12 Million Payday, Courting Tom Cruise’s New Deal and More

Tom Cruise Joaquin Phoenix

In January, Warner Bros. Motion Picture Group chiefs Michael De Luca and Pam Abdy jetted to London to connect with the new crown jewel of the studio, Tom Cruise . The three met to identify a film that would kick off their nonexclusive “strategic partnership.” Sources say a raft of possibilities were discussed, including an “Edge of Tomorrow” follow-up and Quentin Tarantino ’s “The Movie Critic,” which currently isn’t set up with a distributor and has Warner Bros., like every major studio, salivating.

In Tarantino, Cruise could find the rare auteur who marries box office performance and awards-season heat. However, securing the project won’t come cheap. The biggest roadblock for De Luca and Abdy is potentially Sony. Sources say Sony Pictures chairman and CEO Tom Rothman has the edge, having distributed Tarantino’s “Once Upon a Time … in Hollywood.”

Still, a Cruise-Tarantino alliance at Warners would align with the De Luca-Abdy modus operandi: Lure A-list directors who can attract bona fide stars — and spend wildly. Since taking over the studio in July 2022, De Luca and Abdy have struck some pricey deals: There’s Anderson’s next movie, which will feature Leonardo DiCaprio (earning $20 million plus), and a Ryan Coogler-Michael B. Jordan vampire film that has Warners ceding the copyright to Coogler after 25 years. The latter move was a head-scratcher considering that Tarantino is the only other director to secure an eventual copyright from a major studio (with “Once Upon a Time”) and will surely be looking to replicate that with “Movie Critic.” But sources who have done recent business with the studio say the mandate to spare no expense to land big talent comes via Warner Bros. Discovery CEO David Zaslav.

That time may be approaching. In April, Warner Bros. Discovery can entertain offers to buy, sell or merge with a studio like NBCUniversal, as many on the lot believe will happen. That’s when the two-year lock-up period expires as part of the 2022 deal that united WarnerMedia and Discovery. All of the recent moves, from a first-look pact with Margot Robbie’s LuckyChap to the quest to land Christopher Nolan’s “Oppenheimer” follow-up are akin to painting a house before it hits the market.

And this is one splashy renovation. The budget for Todd Phillips’ musical “Joker” sequel — one of De Luca and Abdy’s first green lights — has ballooned to about $200 million, a significant bump from the $60 million cost of the first film. Sources say Joaquin Phoenix is getting $20 million to reprise his role as the clown prince of crime, while Lady Gaga is taking home about $12 million to play Harley Quinn. “Joker” took in more than $1 billion, but musicals are tricky. Case in point: Warners lost $40 million on last year’s “The Color Purple,” according to sources. Though that one can be blamed on the previous regime.

Some argue that spending big is essential when releasing movies in theaters.

“There’s only so much top talent in Hollywood, and it’s very competitive and stretched thin because a lot of talent have deals in streaming,” says Jeff Bock of Exhibitor Relations. “If theatrical is going to work, you need the A-lister like Tom and Leo, and Warner Bros. is spending what they need to spend to keep this talent.”

But executives across town believe Warners’ math sometimes doesn’t add up, with the studio decried as fiscally irresponsible. The Anderson film, for instance, was greenlit with a $115 million budget, according to sources. Underscoring the gamble, none of the director’s movies has crossed $80 million at the box office. His latest, 2021’s “Licorice Pizza,” made $33 million worldwide. Even with Cruise’s star power, “Magnolia” only mustered $48.5 million. (It was De Luca, then a New Line exec, who convinced Cruise to play “Magnolia’s” misogynistic self-help guru.) The pair are said to be less pumped about another auteur’s latest: Bong Joon Ho ’s “Mickey 17.” In January, Warner Bros. pulled the $150 million Robert Pattinson sci-fi starrer from its schedule and then moved it to 2025. A Warner rep insists: “There is, of course, enthusiasm for it.”

Other projects that De Luca and Abdy prioritized are perplexing executives at rival studios. Warners picked up Maggie Gyllenhaal’s Frankenstein film, which is set in the 1930s and stars Christian Bale and Jessie Buckley. It was a project that Netflix deemed too risky and passed on before Warners salvaged it. (A Warners source says Netflix didn’t want to make it on the timeline Gyllenhaal proposed.)

Despite the pressure to acquiesce to demands from top talent, De Luca and Abdy can still say no.
