Introduction

Embarking on a desert safari is an exciting and adventurous experience that allows you to immerse yourself in the beauty and vastness of the desert landscape. Whether you are planning a trip to the Sahara in Africa, the Arabian desert, or the dunes of the American Southwest, it’s important to be prepared for the unique challenges that the desert environment presents.

One key aspect to consider when preparing for a desert safari is what to wear. The right clothing not only ensures your comfort, but also protects you from the harsh elements and potential risks associated with desert travel. From headgear and accessories to appropriate footwear, understanding the essentials of desert attire is crucial for a successful and enjoyable safari.

In this article, we will delve into the specific clothing requirements for a desert safari, offering practical tips and insights to help you dress appropriately for your adventure. Whether you are a man or a woman, traveling in the scorching heat of summer or the cooler temperatures of winter, we have you covered.

So, let’s get ready to explore the incredible world of desert safaris and discover the right wardrobe choices to make your experience unforgettable.

Understanding the Desert Environment

Before we dive into the specifics of what to wear on a desert safari, it’s important to have a basic understanding of the desert environment. Deserts are often characterized by extreme temperatures, arid landscapes, and sparse vegetation. They can be found across various regions of the world, each with its own unique characteristics.

The high temperatures in the desert can be overwhelming, especially during the day when the sun is at its peak. The lack of water and shade can exacerbate the heat, making it essential to protect yourself from sunburn and dehydration. On the other hand, desert temperatures can also drop significantly at night, so being prepared for the chilly desert evenings is equally important.

In addition to the extreme temperatures, deserts are known for their sandy and dusty terrain. Sand particles can be abrasive to the skin, while dust can irritate the eyes and respiratory system. Winds in the desert can also kick up sandstorms, further adding to the challenges of the environment. Taking all these factors into account, it becomes clear how crucial it is to choose clothing that offers protection, comfort, and practicality in the desert.

Understanding the desert environment will not only help you select appropriate clothing for your safari but also prepare you mentally for the conditions you may encounter. It’s important to stay hydrated, wear sunscreen, and be mindful of your physical limits during your desert adventure.

Now that we have a better grasp of the unique challenges posed by the desert environment, let’s explore some essential clothing items to make your desert safari a safe and enjoyable experience.

Essential Clothing for a Desert Safari

When it comes to dressing for a desert safari, the key is to be prepared for the extreme temperatures and dusty conditions. Here are some essential clothing items to consider:

By having these essential clothing items in your desert safari wardrobe, you will be well-prepared to face the unique challenges and enjoy your adventure to the fullest.

Headgear and Accessories

When it comes to desert safaris, choosing the right headgear and accessories is crucial for protecting yourself from the harsh sun, dust, and sand. Here are some essential items to consider:

  • Wide-brimmed Hat: A wide-brimmed hat is a must-have accessory for a desert safari. It provides shade for your face, neck, and ears, shielding you from the intense sun. Look for hats made from lightweight and breathable materials with a wide brim to maximize sun protection.
  • Headscarf: A headscarf is a versatile accessory that serves multiple purposes. It can protect your head and hair from the sun, keep sand and dust out of your face, and provide an extra layer of insulation during cooler desert evenings. Opt for a lightweight, breathable fabric like cotton or linen.
  • Sunglasses: Protect your eyes from the bright desert sun and minimize the effects of glare and dust by wearing sunglasses with UV protection. Look for sunglasses that have a wraparound style to provide better coverage and prevent dust from entering your eyes.
  • Bandana or Buff: A bandana or buff is a handy accessory that can be used in multiple ways. It can be wrapped around your neck or face to provide protection from the sun, dust, and wind. Additionally, it can be moistened to provide a cooling effect on hot desert days.
  • Sunscreen: Sunscreen is an essential item to protect exposed skin from the sun’s harmful rays. Look for a sunscreen with a high SPF rating and apply it generously on all exposed areas of your body, including your face, arms, and legs.
  • Water Bottle: Staying hydrated is crucial in the desert, so carrying a water bottle is essential. Look for bottles with insulation to keep your water cool for longer durations. It is advisable to drink water regularly to prevent dehydration.
  • Camera and Binoculars: Capture the stunning landscapes and wildlife you encounter along your desert safari with a camera. Also, bring a pair of binoculars to enhance your ability to spot distant wildlife and take in the breathtaking views.
  • Insect Repellent: Depending on the location and time of year, insects such as mosquitoes and biting flies may be present in the desert. Carry insect repellent to protect yourself from bites and potential discomfort.
  • First Aid Kit: It’s always wise to have a basic first aid kit on hand in case of minor injuries or ailments. Include items such as adhesive bandages, antiseptic wipes, pain relievers, and any necessary prescription medications.
  • Compass or GPS: In the vast and sometimes disorienting desert landscape, having a compass or a GPS device can help you navigate and ensure you stay on track during your safari.

By being equipped with the right headgear and accessories, you’ll not only protect yourself from the elements but also enhance your comfort and overall enjoyment of your desert adventure.

Footwear Options for Desert Safaris

Choosing the right footwear for a desert safari is crucial as it determines your comfort and safety while traversing the sandy and rugged terrains. Here are some footwear options to consider:

  • Sandals: For shorter walks or during the evenings when temperatures are cooler, a comfortable pair of sandals can be a great choice. Opt for sandals with secure straps and sturdy soles to protect your feet and provide grip on uneven surfaces.
  • Hiking Boots: If you plan to engage in longer walks or hikes, sturdy hiking boots offer excellent support and protection for your feet. Look for boots with ankle support, durable traction soles, and water-resistant properties.
  • Closed-Toe Shoes: Closed-toe shoes, such as sneakers or athletic shoes, can also be suitable for a desert safari. Choose lightweight and breathable options made from synthetic materials for better airflow and moisture-wicking abilities.
  • Gaiters: Gaiters are protective coverings worn over your lower legs and footwear. They provide an additional layer of defense against thorny bushes, crawling insects, and sand entering your shoes.
  • Socks: Don’t overlook the importance of wearing the right socks in the desert. Look for moisture-wicking and quick-drying socks to keep your feet dry and comfortable. Avoid cotton socks as they retain moisture and can lead to blisters.
  • Sandals with Straps: If you prefer the comfort of sandals but want additional protection, consider sandals with adjustable straps that secure your feet and prevent sand from entering.
  • Extra Pair of Shoes: It’s always a good idea to bring an extra pair of lightweight, comfortable shoes in case your primary footwear gets wet or damaged.

Whichever footwear option you choose, make sure that it is well-fitted, provides adequate support, and is suitable for the activities you plan to undertake during your desert safari. Additionally, breaking in new shoes before your trip can help prevent discomfort and blisters.

Remember to regularly check your footwear for any sand or pebbles that may have accumulated, as these can cause discomfort and affect your ability to walk comfortably. Taking care of your feet and investing in suitable footwear will ensure that you can fully enjoy every step of your desert adventure.

Appropriate Clothing for Men

When it comes to dressing for a desert safari, men should prioritize comfort, protection, and practicality. Here are some tips and suggestions for appropriate clothing options for men:

  • Lightweight Shirts: Opt for loose-fitting, lightweight shirts made of breathable fabrics like cotton or linen. Long sleeves can provide added protection from the sun and potential abrasions. Consider shirts with built-in UPF (Ultraviolet Protection Factor) for extra sun protection.
  • T-shirts: Pack a few comfortable t-shirts, preferably made from moisture-wicking materials, which can help keep you cool and dry in the desert heat.
  • Light-colored Clothing: Light-colored clothing reflects sunlight and helps to keep you cooler. Choose shades like white, beige, or light pastels for your shirts and pants.
  • Long Pants: Opt for loose-fitting, lightweight pants made of breathable materials like cotton or linen. Pants provide protection from the sun, insects, and rough surfaces. Avoid shorts, as they leave your legs exposed to potential hazards.
  • Comfortable Shorts: For more relaxed moments or in the evenings when temperatures are cooler, pack a couple of pairs of comfortable shorts that allow for ease of movement.
  • Belt: A sturdy belt will not only help keep your pants secure but also allow you to comfortably attach small essentials such as a camera pouch or a water bottle holder.
  • Jacket or Sweater: As temperatures can drop significantly during desert evenings, pack a lightweight jacket or sweater for layering to keep you warm and comfortable.
  • Swimwear: If you have the opportunity to swim in an oasis or water source during your desert safari, don’t forget to pack swim trunks.
  • Comfortable Undergarments: Choose moisture-wicking and breathable underwear to prevent discomfort and chafing.
  • Accessories: Don’t forget essential accessories like a wide-brimmed hat, sunglasses, and a bandana or scarf to protect your head, eyes, and face from the sun, dust, and sand.

Remember to pack enough clothing for the duration of your safari, taking into account the activities you plan to engage in and the length of your trip. Additionally, consider carrying a small laundry kit or some travel-sized detergent to wash and refresh your clothes during longer excursions.

By choosing appropriate clothing that strikes a balance between functionality and comfort, you’ll be ready to enjoy the beauty of the desert while keeping yourself protected and at ease.

Appropriate Clothing for Women

Women embarking on a desert safari should prioritize comfort, protection, and versatility when choosing their clothing. Here are some tips and suggestions for appropriate clothing options for women:

  • Maxi Dresses or Skirts: Opt for lightweight maxi dresses or skirts made of breathable fabrics like cotton or linen. These provide excellent coverage while allowing air circulation to keep you cool in the desert heat.
  • Lightweight Shirts and Blouses: Pack loose-fitting, lightweight shirts and blouses that are made from breathable materials. Long sleeves can offer added protection from the sun, insects, and potential abrasions. Consider shirts with built-in UPF (Ultraviolet Protection Factor) for extra sun protection.
  • T-shirts: Pack comfortable t-shirts, preferably made from moisture-wicking materials, which can help keep you cool and dry during your desert adventure.
  • Full-Length Pants or Capris: Choose loose-fitting, full-length pants or capris made from lightweight materials like cotton or linen. These will protect your legs from the sun, insects, and abrasive surfaces.
  • Maxi or Midi Length Skirts: Choose flowing maxi or midi skirts that provide comfort and coverage. These can be paired with a lightweight top or blouse for a stylish desert safari look.
  • Swimwear: If there’s an opportunity to swim in an oasis or water source during your desert safari, be sure to pack your favorite swimsuit.
  • Comfortable Undergarments: Select moisture-wicking and breathable undergarments to ensure maximum comfort and prevent any chafing or discomfort.
  • Accessories: Don’t forget essential accessories like a wide-brimmed hat, sunglasses, and a scarf or bandana to protect your head, eyes, and face from the sun, dust, and sand.

Keep in mind that cultural considerations may also influence your clothing choices. It’s always respectful to dress modestly and follow any specific guidelines or customs of the region you are visiting. Be sure to research and understand the local culture before your trip to ensure that your clothing choices align with the local customs.

By choosing appropriate clothing that prioritizes comfort, modesty, and protection, you’ll be able to fully enjoy your desert safari while feeling confident and at ease.

Dressing for Different Times of the Year

When planning a desert safari, it’s important to consider the time of year and the weather conditions you may encounter. Here are some tips for dressing appropriately for different seasons:

  • Summer: Summers in the desert can be scorching hot, with temperatures often exceeding 100 degrees Fahrenheit (38 degrees Celsius). During this time, it’s important to prioritize lightweight and breathable clothing. Opt for loose-fitting, light-colored garments that provide ample coverage and protection from the sun. Choose natural fabrics like cotton or linen, as they allow for better air circulation and help wick away sweat. Don’t forget to wear a wide-brimmed hat, sunglasses, and sunscreen to shield yourself from the intense sun.
  • Winter: Winter temperatures in the desert can drop significantly, especially during the evenings. Layering your clothing is essential during this time. Start with a base layer of moisture-wicking fabric, followed by a light sweater or jacket. Depending on the temperatures, you may need a heavier jacket or coat. Opt for thermal or woolen socks to keep your feet warm. Remember to carry a hat and gloves to protect your extremities from the cold.
  • Transitional Seasons (Spring and Fall): Transitional seasons can bring more moderate temperatures to the desert. Mornings and evenings may be cooler, while the days can still be warm. Dressing in layers is key during these seasons. Begin with a lightweight base layer, add a long-sleeved shirt or blouse, and finish with a light jacket or sweater. Keep a scarf handy for sudden temperature changes or to protect yourself from sandstorms.

It’s also important to stay updated on weather forecasts before your trip to ensure you are prepared for any sudden changes in temperature or weather conditions. Pack accordingly, considering both the daytime and nighttime temperatures.

Lastly, regardless of the season, don’t forget to wear comfortable and supportive footwear, carry essential accessories like a wide-brimmed hat and sunglasses, and always have a sufficient supply of sunscreen to protect your skin from the sun’s harmful rays.

By dressing appropriately for the specific season and weather conditions, you’ll be able to fully enjoy your desert safari while staying comfortable and protected throughout your journey.

Tips for Comfortable and Safe Dressing

When preparing for a desert safari, comfort and safety should be your top priorities. Here are some essential tips to ensure that you dress comfortably and safely for your adventure:

  • Choose Loose-Fitting Clothing: Opt for loose-fitting garments that allow air circulation and freedom of movement. Tight clothing can restrict blood flow and make you feel uncomfortable, especially in the heat of the desert.
  • Prioritize Breathable Fabrics: Select clothing made from breathable fabrics like cotton or linen. These materials allow air to flow through, helping to regulate your body temperature and prevent excessive sweating.
  • Protect Yourself from the Sun: The desert sun can be intense, so protect yourself by wearing a wide-brimmed hat, sunglasses with UV protection, and applying sunscreen with a high SPF rating. Covering exposed skin with lightweight, long-sleeved shirts and pants can provide an additional layer of sun protection.
  • Layer Your Clothing: Desert temperatures can vary significantly between day and night. Layering allows you to adjust your clothing accordingly. Start with a base layer, such as a moisture-wicking shirt, add a lightweight jacket or sweater for insulation when needed, and consider a scarf or shawl to protect against temperature changes and sandstorms.
  • Protect Your Feet: Opt for closed-toe shoes or sturdy sandals to protect your feet from the desert’s rough terrains, thorny plants, and hot sand. Consider wearing socks made from moisture-wicking materials to keep your feet dry and prevent blisters.
  • Carry Essential Accessories: Besides the obvious sun protection items, don’t forget to bring items like insect repellent, a first aid kit, a compass or GPS, and a suitable backpack or daypack to carry your essentials.
  • Stay Hydrated: Proper hydration is crucial in the desert. Carry a refillable water bottle and drink water regularly, even if you don’t feel thirsty. Consider bringing electrolyte packets to replenish lost minerals and salts.
  • Be Mindful of Cultural Sensitivities: If you are visiting a desert region with cultural sensitivities, it’s important to dress modestly and respectfully. Research and familiarize yourself with local customs and dress codes to ensure your clothing choices align with the cultural norms.
  • Bring a Change of Clothes: In the desert, dust and sand can quickly accumulate on your clothing. Having a change of clothes allows you to freshen up and feel more comfortable during longer excursions.
  • Follow Safety Guidelines: Always follow the safety guidelines and instructions provided by your tour operator or guide. Be aware of potential dangers and take necessary precautions to ensure your safety throughout your desert safari.

By following these tips, you’ll be able to dress comfortably and safely for your desert adventure, allowing you to fully immerse yourself in the magnificent landscapes while enjoying peace of mind.

When planning your safari adventure, it's important to consider what shoes you'll be wearing. Comfort and durability are key, as well as having good grip for the various terrains you'll encounter. That's why sneakers with good grip are a popular choice when it comes to safari footwear.

Sneakers are a comfortable option, as they typically have a cushioned sole that can help absorb shock and minimize fatigue during long walks or hikes. But when selecting sneakers for your safari trip, it's important to choose a pair with good grip. Safari terrains can be uneven, rocky, and slippery, so having sneakers with a strong grip will help prevent slips and falls.

One popular type of sneaker with good grip is the trail running shoe. These shoes are designed to provide stability on uneven and unpredictable terrain, and typically have a grippy rubber sole that provides traction and support. They're also usually lightweight and breathable, which is ideal for hot and humid safari climates.

Another option is a hiking shoe, which is designed to provide support and stability on rocky or uneven terrain. Hiking shoes often have a rugged outsole for good grip, and may have additional features, such as waterproofing, that can be beneficial in wet or muddier areas.

Regardless of the type of sneaker you choose, it's important to make sure you break them in before your safari trip. This will help prevent blisters and other discomfort that can occur when wearing new shoes on long walks or hikes. And remember, comfort and safety should be your top priorities when choosing the right footwear for your safari adventure.

When it comes to packing for a safari adventure, appropriate footwear is crucial. The right shoes can make or break your experience, so it's important to choose the right ones. Closed-toe hiking sandals are an excellent option for a safari, and here's why.

Firstly, closed-toe hiking sandals provide excellent protection for your feet. When you're out in the bush, you're likely to encounter all kinds of terrain, from rocky paths to sandy dunes. Closed-toe shoes will prevent any debris or stones from getting into your shoes and injuring your toes.

Secondly, hiking sandals are comfortable and lightweight. They allow your feet to breathe, making them perfect for the hot and humid conditions you'll encounter on a safari. You'll be doing a lot of walking, and your feet will thank you for choosing shoes that are both supportive and breathable.

Thirdly, closed-toe hiking sandals are versatile. They work well on a range of terrains and will keep your feet protected no matter where your safari takes you. They're also easy to wear with a range of outfits, from shorts and t-shirts to safari-style pants and shirts.

When choosing hiking sandals for your safari, look for a pair with good traction on the sole. This will help prevent slips and falls when walking on uneven surfaces. It's also a good idea to choose a pair with adjustable straps so that you can personalize them to fit your feet perfectly.

In summary, closed-toe hiking sandals are an excellent option for a safari adventure. They provide protection, comfort, and versatility, making them the ideal footwear choice for a trip to the bush. So, make sure to pack a good pair of hiking sandals on your next safari, and you'll be ready to take on whatever the African wilderness throws your way.

When it comes to a safari trip, choosing the right footwear is essential. It is crucial to put comfort and functionality above style. Safari expeditions involve a lot of walking, hiking, and sometimes even running. Lightweight trail runners are, without doubt, the best shoes to wear for a safari experience.

Firstly, the key to a comfortable safari is wearing lightweight shoes that offer support. Lightweight trail runners fit the bill in this regard. They are lightweight enough to prevent foot fatigue after walking for long hours. Trail runners have cushioned soles and offer excellent support, which makes them perfect for exploring the rugged terrain of the African wilderness.

Secondly, trail runners are durable, breathable, and offer excellent traction that makes them ideal for the uneven and rough terrain. Their design enhances the natural movement of the feet and allows for better grip on slippery and rough surfaces. Additionally, trail runners come with waterproof and breathable membranes, which helps to keep your feet dry and comfortable, regardless of weather conditions.

Moreover, trail runners are ideal for a safari because they are easy to clean. You never know what you may encounter in the African wilderness, but one thing is for sure: your shoes will get dirty. Trail runners can be cleaned with a brush, water, and mild detergent, making them ideal for safari trips.

Lastly, trail runners can be worn for more than just a safari experience. They are versatile enough to be worn for casual walks, light hiking, and other outdoor activities. They come in different colors and designs, which makes them suitable for different types of outfits.

In conclusion, lightweight trail runners are the best shoes to wear on a safari trip. They are comfortable, functional, offer excellent support, traction, and are easy to clean. Investing in a good pair of trail runners will make your safari experience more enjoyable and memorable.

Fashionable combinations: How to style faux leather joggers for any occasion

When planning your safari adventure, one of the most important considerations is what shoes to wear. To be prepared for the challenging terrain, many experts recommend investing in a pair of waterproof hiking boots. These boots offer several benefits that can be particularly helpful on safari.

Firstly, waterproof hiking boots will keep your feet dry and comfortable in any weather conditions. Some safaris may involve wading through shallow streams or walking in areas where the ground is muddy or wet. With waterproof boots, you won't have to worry about water seeping in and soaking your feet. This can make a significant difference in your comfort level and enjoyment of the experience.

In addition, hiking boots provide excellent support for your feet and ankles. This is important when navigating uneven terrain, hiking up steep hills, or walking long distances. The construction of hiking boots, with their sturdy soles and higher ankle cuffs, will provide greater stability and help prevent injuries or sprains.

Furthermore, waterproof hiking boots are typically made of durable and breathable materials. This means that they can withstand the harsh conditions of a safari while allowing your feet to breathe and reducing the risk of blisters or chafing. Additionally, the quality construction of hiking boots ensures they will last for many safari adventures to come.

Lastly, wearing hiking boots can be a great way to protect your feet from the bites of insects and the stings of plants. While on safari, it is common to encounter plants like thorns or sharp grass, as well as insects that could bite or sting. Wearing hiking boots will provide you with an extra layer of protection and prevent these kinds of injuries.

In conclusion, if you're planning a safari adventure, a pair of waterproof hiking boots should be at the top of your shopping list. Comfortable, supportive, and durable, hiking boots will help you tackle the challenging terrain and enjoy your trip to the fullest. So, invest in a good pair of hiking boots before you head out on your next safari experience.

Chilly Beach Chic: Bundling Up for the Seaside

When embarking on a safari adventure, it's essential to have the right footwear. Safari-style canvas shoes are a perfect option for this type of journey. These shoes are comfortable, sturdy, and breathable, making them perfect for the African terrain.

Since safaris often take place in hot and humid environments, safari-style canvas shoes are made with breathable materials, such as cotton or canvas. This allows air to circulate through the shoes, keeping your feet cool and dry. Additionally, many of these shoes have mesh panels to increase breathability further.

The shoe's soles are typically made of sturdy rubber to provide grip and traction on a variety of surfaces. This feature is especially crucial when trekking through the African wilderness, where the terrain can be unpredictable and challenging.

Overall, safari-style canvas shoes are an ideal choice for your safari adventure. They're comfortable, breathable, and durable, making them perfect for walking and exploring the African bush. Whether you're going on a game drive, walking safari, or camping trip, these shoes will keep your feet protected and comfortable throughout your journey.

Styling Tips: Ways to Pair Navy Chinos for a Polished Look

When it comes to going on safari, proper footwear is essential. Walking long distances in search of wildlife and encountering various terrains requires appropriate footwear that provides comfort, support, and protection. The best option for safari shoes is breathable walking shoes.

Good walking shoes should provide ample support to the foot and ankle, especially when hiking over uneven terrain. Look for walking shoes with good arch and heel support that work to improve foot posture and minimize discomfort, even after extended periods of walking. Rubber soles with deep treads provide good grip on a range of surfaces, keeping you stable on wet or muddy ground.

In addition to breathability and support, shoes that provide protection from the elements are a must. During a safari, encountering all kinds of wildlife is likely, and it's essential to wear closed-toe shoes that protect the feet from unexpected bites or stings. Boots or shoes with reinforced toes, or that have protective overlays, are great options for added safety.

Finally, when choosing the perfect walking shoes for safari, it's important to select shoes that fit comfortably and securely. Shoes that are too small or overly tight are not only uncomfortable but can also cause serious foot problems like blisters and sores. Try out a few options and choose the pair that fits snugly without causing any pain or rubbing.

With these considerations in mind, breathable walking shoes are the perfect pick for your next safari adventure. Not only will they keep your feet comfortable and cool, but they'll also provide the necessary support and protection you need to traverse the African wilderness.

Ole Miss Football Fan Fashion: Dressing for the Game-Day Win

If you are planning a safari trip, one of the most important things to consider is what shoes to wear. A good pair of shoes can make or break your experience, especially if you will be venturing into areas with rough terrain. One type of shoe that is highly recommended for walking on sand terrain is desert boots.

Desert boots are lightweight, comfortable, and provide great support for your feet. They are designed with a thick rubber sole that offers excellent grip on sand, making them ideal for walking in areas with loose soil. Additionally, these shoes have a high ankle that provides extra support and keeps sand and debris from getting in. Desert boots are also very durable, so they can withstand the harsh conditions of the desert.

When choosing desert boots for your safari trip, it is important to choose the right size. Your boots should fit snugly to prevent blisters and other foot discomforts. A good rule of thumb is to buy a size that is slightly larger than your everyday shoe size, as your feet may swell from the heat and walking. It is also advisable to wear socks that wick away moisture to keep your feet dry and comfortable.

Another advantage of wearing desert boots on safari is that they are versatile. They can be worn with different types of outfits, from casual to semi-formal. Since you will be mostly outdoors, wearing comfortable and stylish shoes can make a big difference in how much you enjoy your trip.

In conclusion, desert boots are a great choice for anyone planning a safari trip with sand terrain. They are durable, comfortable, and provide excellent support for your feet. Additionally, they are versatile enough to be worn with different types of outfits, making them a practical investment for any traveler. So be sure to pack your desert boots when preparing for your next safari trip!

5 Perfect Shoe Pairings for Winter Dresses

When packing for a safari, you'll want to make sure you have appropriate footwear to keep your feet comfortable and protected. An essential part of any safari outfit is a good pair of Merino wool hiking socks. Not only are these socks perfect for the outdoors, they also provide ultimate comfort and support for your feet.

Merino wool comes from Merino sheep, which is renowned for producing high-quality wool. The wool used in these socks is soft and non-itchy, making it perfect for all-day wear. Additionally, it has moisture-wicking capabilities which will help regulate your foot temperature and keep your feet dry, even during hot or humid conditions.

Hiking on a safari often means walking long distances in rugged terrain, which can be tough on your feet. But with the added support and cushioning of Merino wool hiking socks, you can keep moving without feeling discomfort. Furthermore, cushioned hiking socks can help prevent blisters and protect your feet from any potential injuries while you're out exploring.

Aside from its practicality, Merino wool is also a durable material that can last for years with proper care. It's important to wear high-quality socks like these on a safari trip to ensure the longevity of your footwear investment. Plus, if you plan on going on other outdoor adventures in the future, these socks will be versatile enough to take with you.

In summary, Merino wool hiking socks are the perfect footwear choice for any safari trip. They offer comfort, support, protection, durability, and versatility, all wrapped up in one package. Don't forget to pack a few pairs before you head out on your next adventure!

Sledding Down the Snow: Dressing Properly for Tubing Excitement

Safaris are known for their dusty, wild terrain and often require long treks through rugged landscapes. When it comes to footwear for safaris, ankle-high leather boots are the way to go. Not only do they provide ample ankle support and protection from the elements, but they also provide the perfect amount of coverage to keep dirt and debris from entering your shoes.

One of the most significant benefits of ankle-high leather boots is their durability. Made from high-quality materials such as leather and rubber, these boots can withstand the tough and rocky terrain of safaris. They also provide excellent traction, making them ideal for climbing and walking over uneven surfaces.

Another advantage of ankle-high leather boots is their style. They are a timeless option and can be worn in various situations, not just safari-related activities. They can be dressed up with jeans and a casual shirt, or worn with shorts and a t-shirt, making them a versatile addition to your wardrobe.

When it comes to comfort, ankle-high leather boots do not disappoint. The extra padding around the ankle and the insole provide the support necessary for long walks and hikes, making them an excellent option for a safari or even a weekend camping trip.

Overall, if you're looking for a stylish, comfortable, and durable footwear option for your safari, ankle-high leather boots should be at the top of your list. They are versatile, offer great support and protection and are a reliable choice for any adventure.

How to Choose your Safari Shoes

By Author cristina garcia

Posted on Published: December 26, 2017  - Last updated: August 1, 2023

When preparing for an African safari there are so many things to remember. Vaccinations, insurance, flights, clothes… Then at the last minute you remember the shoes! What are the best safari shoes to pack? should I take safari boots instead? Will flip flops do? We’re here to help you answer that question.

My personal recommendation is to not take more than 3 pairs of shoes for safari in total. I used to always take 4 pairs and one would end up never being worn. Shoes are one of the most important items on any trip, but also one of the bulkiest. And if you take the wrong shoes your trip might be ruined. If you are careful about how you choose your safari shoes, you won’t take up unnecessary space in your luggage and you’ll have a great trip.

Here are our recommendations of shoes to take on a safari:

Table of Contents

Safari Shoes for a Walking Safari

Choose an eco friendly flip flop., safari sandals, waterproof safari sandals for your water based safari: okavango delta and beyond, shoes for staying at a lodge.

When you visit Africa to see wildlife, it is very likely that you’ll take a walking safari , even if it’s a short one. And you should! A walking safari will get you closer to the animals, and you will find yourself immersed in their habitat. And you’ll need the best shoes for safari to enjoy it.

choose a good safari shoe if you are going on a walking safari

Getting proper walking safari shoes  is important for several reasons. First of all, if you’re walking in the bush, you need good closed-toe shoes, never flip flops or sandals. I hate to break it to you, but snakes, spiders, and scorpions are never far from your feet. And your toes are delicious. If you are super-paranoid about being bitten by a snake, take  mid or tall hiking boots (safari boots) instead of low hiking shoes so your ankles are also covered. I personally think it’s overkill to wear tall hiking boots and they’re not that comfortable in the hot months. My feet suffer from claustrophobia. For me, low-height hybrid hiking shoe/ trainers are the perfect safari shoes.

desert safari shoes

I always bring my KEEN hiking shoes . They are an older model of the Targhee II. I just love them. I bought them second hand (they were hardly worn and I was super broke) a few years ago for our week-long hike in Yellowstone and have been using them ever since (that makes them 6 year old!). They are breathable and they dry super quick. This is handy if you are clumsy like me and tend to accidentally step into creeks and rivers. Keen hiking shoes have what they call KeenDry ( a waterproof breathable membrane). Not just a gimmick, it totally works and they are dry within a couple hours. When choosing your walking safari shoes, I always recommend to get shoes that are waterproof and breathable .

For an African safari I also wear  hike ultra light smartwool socks . I know, wool sounds hot, but they wick moisture well and you can wear them for many days and they don’t smell. It’s amazing! Since my hiking shoes are the most bulky shoes that I take on an African safari, they are the ones I wear on the plane. Make sure you choose hiking shoes that also function well for daily wear, and not some that will end up in the bottom of your wardrobe for months.

Here are our favorite walking safari shoes for women, safari shoes for men, and also a couple of safari boots:

Shoes for Camping while on a Safari

If you are like us and prefer to camp while on a safari, you should pack a pair of flip flops to use while showering. Your feet will thank you when using the communal showers.

You can also wear flip flops around camp, but always bear in mind that there might be lots of thorns around. Hal’s flip flops were ruined after just 5 days of camping in Botswana because of it. And some of the thorns are pretty long and thick and can easily puncture through the flip flop and into your feet. Eek! (Photo below.) On a later trip to the Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park , Hal got some flip flops with much thicker soles and wore them for 5 weeks straight, no problem! We advise not to wear flip flops at night since there might be snakes or scorpions around and you won’t see them in the dark. Cover your feet at night.

a thorn in my safari shoes, South Africa

Our favorite eco friendly flip flop companies are:

Patagonia : Their Environmental and Social Responsibility   is known worldwide. They  donate 1% of their sales to environmental organizations around the world. For example, through grants and donations, Patagonia supports Buffalo Field Campaign, a non profit that protects Yellowstone’s wild buffalo and their habitat.

Chaco : I own a pair of Chaco flip flops and I love them. I also just found out about their sustainability. Their ReChaco program allows you to send your old Z/sandal for repairs (resoled or restrapped) for free. Almost 300,000 sandals have been repaired so far, keeping a lot of still usable shoes off the landfill. Also, the webbing on their sandals is made of recycled plastic bottles! I own the Chaco’s Chillos flip flop on the color Sadie Sparrow. This ones are great to wear around campgrounds, and they are fine if they get a little wet. For men, I’d try the Chaco Men’s Lowdown Flip Flop . These are lightweight and have a 3.0 MM lug outsole for no slip traction.

desert safari shoes

Olli : Natural and fair trade flip flops. Made from natural rubber, these flip flops are also good for the people who make them. Olli is a partner of the the Fair Rubber Association in Sri Lanka. Every pair of flip-flops that you buy will provide education, safe working conditions, & improve the life of the very people who made them! Search Olli flip flops now .

While you can wear flip flops as your everyday shoe in hot weather, my preferred choice for safari shoes are good quality sandals with a thick sole and with a bit more foot support. Thick soles are for the thorn issues and support for comfort. You can use them camping, around the lodge, or even on a light hike if you don’t want to take hiking shoes (but always use closed shoes when hiking in the bush, seriously). My favorites are from from companies that build high quality sandals that last a long time like Taos Footwear (my absolute favorite!) or Merrell’s sandals.  A nice pair of safari sandals will be your go-to shoe on a safari so don’t skimp.

Perfect safari shoes

If you are lucky enough to spend some time in the Okavango delta on a mokoro or kayaking or any other water-based activities you need some good water sandals with an ankle strap. Flip flops might get stuck in the mud and you don’t want to lose them underwater. The perfect safari sandals for this would be something like Chacos’s sandals or Teva’s sandals .

If you are splurging and treating yourself to a nice lodge stay, you might want to give your dusty sandals a rest and wear something more fancy for dinner time. A pair of black or brown shoes/sandals go with everything and you can also wear them if you go out into town.

desert safari shoes

I love Taos Footwear, and I have a few of their sandals. I take my black Taos Trophy sandal to wear around cities and around the lodge at dinner time. It is cute, super comfy, and can take short hikes. I also take a pair of Taos Perfect sandal . Yes, it is called perfect, and I would agree! Super comfy, extra cute, and can also take you on short and easy hikes. Mine is the ‘bruschetta’ color. Since I have the other sandals in black, I wanted something more colorful.

desert safari shoes

  • You’re most important shoe is an every day comfortable sandal .
  • If you are going to do any nature walking at all (and you really ought to!) then a closed-toed lightweight hiking shoe is a must have . If you can only take two pairs of shoes, wear these on the plane and pack your sandals.
  • If you have a little extra room then throw in some light weight flip flops for around camp. Or go nuts and take a cute pair of dressier shoes for those nights out and dinners at the lodge.
  • And if you’re going to be spending a fair amount of time in and out of the water, bring a good heavy-duty sandal with ankle straps like a Teva or Chaco.

We hope our recommendations have helped you choose the right shoes to wear on safari for your next adventure!

I enjoyed reading your article, but I have some questions. My wife and I are leaving for a stay at Governors Safari camp on the Mara river in two weeks (December 2 2019). We've never been on this type of trip. We've been following the weather forecasts...they've had plenty of rain and it looks like it will rain while we're there. I have no idea how much we'll be walking in the bush, it's a 4x4 deal, I'd rather be able to get by with some sturdy sandals but I'm thinking we might need waterproof leather hiking shoes/boots. Your thoughts?

Hal Brindley

Sunday 24th of November 2019

Hi Jim, Sounds like a great trip! I think some good low waterproof hiking shoes would do the trick. (or mid-height if you want more ankle support or deeper mud/water) They're good for everyday wearing (they basically look like sneakers) Cristina has a pair of Keen shoes that have lasted her forever. Here's an example of a low Keen waterproof hiking shoe that I use for everyday use and is very functional in muddy hiking conditions Keen Men's Oakenridge waterproof shoes (unless you get into water/mud more than a couple inches deep, then I switch over to rubber boots!) I hope that's helpful! Have a great trip! -Hal

Testimonials

Hi folks at courteney in my old home town of bulawayo 😎.

My 14 year old son has officially taken ownership of my old Courteneys.   I have passed them onto the next generation and unlike Sting’s “Dead Man’s Boots” he seems to love them as much as I did.

Vintage 1998 they started their life with a 4 day hike in the Chimanimanis. Not a single blister. Since then they have hiked in Europe and Australia, been dubbined about 12 times, grown green mould in the damp Adelaide winter, and still have their hard-wearing original laces!

My son hiked in the Morialta Conservation Park and he loves them. Not a single blister.

Keep doing what you’re doing.

Justin Wynn

Finest, best fitting, and toughest boot

This is the second pair of Courteney boots I have purchased in the past two years. They are by far the finest, best fitting, and toughest boot I have found. I wear them daily around town, and also hunt with them hard, once a month on the desert hills of the Tejon Ranch, here in California.  The boots break in fast and they never let my feet get wet. Once while riding a horse, a branch from a tree was stuck in the toe. Yet it didn’t penetrate the boot. The only flaw I can find is when applying the polish that is supplied at time of purchase, the beautiful appearance of the gameskins are subdued into a brown colour. Even though the boots lose their luster after a while, they still perform flawlessly. I would like to thank you for your excellent craftsmanship in these boots – even the laces hold up.

Steven W. Herr

Most comfortable pair of boots i’ve ever owned.

I’ve been wearing a pair of your Selous boots now for four months. Wow!!! I can honestly say they’re the best made, most comfortable pair of boots I’ve ever owned. I was a little hesitant at first to spend almost $400 on a pair of boots but what a difference at the end of the day!  Anyone who has ever walked out of the wilderness with “hot feet” knows every painful step is worth $5 to avoid. Four hundred dollars is CHEAP for these boots. I don’t even think of them as boots anymore, more like a matching pair of Rolls Royces for the feet. I can see now why you have such a loyal customer base. Thanks for a great product.

Don Merriam

Keep up the great work.

I walked the length of the Pacific Crest Trail (Mexican border to the Canadian border) last summer in my Courtney boots (Ostrich skin) with nary a blister. This was in celebration of my 60th birthday and to commemorate having done it 40 years earlier at age 20. My Courtney boots held up better than the technical mountaineering boots I bought from the North Face lo those many years ago. And everyone at my shooting club still says they’re the best looking shoes they’ve seen. Hell, women even stop me in the grocery store and ask me where I bought them. It doesn’t get any better than that, form and function. I’m going to buy another pair just to be sure I get out of life with them on. Keep up the great work.

Most comfortable boots

The finest, most comfortable boots I’ve ever worn!

Best footwear used in fifty years.

Having just tramped the Zambezi Valley for a week, wearing my new Courteney Safari boots, I must say they are the best footwear I have used in almost fifty years of hunting, farming and wandering. Congratulations on a great product.

I might consider slaughtering the little bugger dog as he just performed some surgery on my wife’s new leather boots and maybe you can produce one attache from his flatskin if production will only start later on again…….

8 days underwater.

We were on the houseboat on Lake Kariba which sank, along with a pair of Courteneys I had bought for a friend in South Africa. We sent divers down to recover our possessions and they managed to retrieve the boots. After 8 days underwater they looked brand new without a mark on them. I’m really thrilled.

Terri Rennie

Most comfortable and durable boots i ever owned.

While in Zimbabwe with the US military I purchased a pair of your “Safari” boots. Since then I wear them almost exclusively. They have been the most comfortable and durable boots I have ever owned and I absolutely love them.

James M. McAlister

Thank heavens for my wonderful courteneys.

I am in London at present. Having a great time. Have been doing a lot of walking. Thank heavens for my wonderful Courteney boots. They have saved the day. We came via Singapore and due to the hot weather the boots I wore gave me blisters on both feet. I thought that my trip to see the sights of London may have been ruined. On went the Courteney boots and my feet haven’t stopped walking. Will highly recommend to anyone wanting a great wearing boot.

The best shoes for your specific safari.

Kenya, Masai Mara, Safari

How Long Is Your Trip?

When it comes to picking the best safari shoes, we need to remember what’s right for one person and their trip isn’t right for everyone.

That’s why I want to kick off this article, by getting you to think about your specific trip and what shoes might best suit your needs.

To start with, you need to think about where, when and how long you’re planning to safari for.

If you’re simply visiting one country in Africa on a short 1 week trip, then you may be able to take a couple of pairs of different shoes because you won’t be limited by weight in the same way as if you’re undertaking a long overland trip through many countries in Africa, likely living out of a backpack you have to carry.

On a short trip therefore, where you’re likely to have a suitcase you can wheel around, taking a few pairs of shoes might not be such a problem.

If you’ve got a heavy backpack to carry, you might limit yourself to just one!

Where and When Are You Going on Safari?

desert safari shoes

Next, we need to consider where and when you’re going to safari i.e. in which country and at what time of year.

This will drastically affect what the best shoes for your safari are, because you may need something waterproof if travelling in the rainy season, something well insulated if it’s likely to be cold, or something breathable if you’re travelling in the height of summer.

For example, the jungles of East Africa (if you’re heading to see the gorillas ) have very damp, humid conditions then certainly require boots that are waterproof and have good grip.

Compare this is to travelling to Etosha National Park in Namibia in the height of summer, where the dry, desert-like conditions here and searing heat, mean keeping your feet cool will be of greatest importance.

What Type of Safari Are You Taking?

desert safari shoes

The third thing to think about when considering what the best shoes for your African safari might be is the type of safari you’ll be enjoying.

Full driving safaris, which are common in parks such as the Serengeti in Tanzania or the Masai Mara in Kenya , where dangerous predators mean you can’t exit a vehicle, will necessitate very different footwear to if you’re enjoying a walking safari with rhinos in eSwatini (formerly Swaziland) or Zimbabwe, where physical trekking on uneven ground will mean good, study boots are very important.

Ditto, a luxury safari where vehicles are a bit more comfortable means you may want to take shoes that are lighter than a rough, budget 4wd safari vehicle, where sturdy shoes that prevent your feet from knocks and bumps might be a better idea.

If you’re staying in a lodge, a more relaxed sandal will be more appropriate than if you’re wild camping and need some protection for those toilet trips in the night!

When it comes to the best safari shoes for you therefore, a little time to think about what type of trip you are likely to undertake, where, when and how long for, will certainly help you prepare the best footwear.

And if you’re looking for ideas about the best safari experience, why not check out this great range of options that cover some of the top wildlife attractions and national parks across the continent.

4 Safari-Specific Shoe Suggestions

And to get you thinking a little more, here’s 4 suggestions to help you narrow down your research…

#1 For gorilla trekking in Uganda, these waterproof and sturdy Salomon Quest Gore-Tex boots have excellent grip, tread and high ankle support to cope with the rough jungle conditions underfoot, as well as keep your feet well protected from any nasty creatures!

#2 For safaris in desert countries like Namibia, where it’s very hot and dry and you’re largely staying instead a vehicle due to the risk of predators, then a good supported and sturdy sandal, will probably be best for keeping your feet cool yet comfortable, making these Arizona Birkenstocks ideal for the job.

#3 For walking safaris in hot Southern African countries like Swaziland or Zimbabwe, something inbetween a big clumpy boot and a sandal will be best. I highly suggest a walking shoe if this is something that’s likely to feature on your itinerary, because not only do they have good grip and support with a thick sole, but they also keep your foot well-ventilated and are flexible, low-rise and light for any quick movements you may have to make. These North Face Hedgehog Fastpack GTX are a good option because they are waterproof too – handy if there’s a heavy dew in the morning!

#4 And finally, for safaris in humid countries such as Kenya and Tanzania in East Africa, something light, comfy and airy, but that will protect your feet from knocks and bumps in a 4wd vehicle, will be best. In this case, a trail runner shoe, like these New Balance Fresh Foams would be perfect.

Practical Points to Think About For Your Safari Shoes

Safari shoe colour.

One thing I know a lot of people think about when it comes to the best shoes for their African safari is colour… because I get a lot of questions about this!

And while colour doesn’t matter a huge amount, I always suggest a natural shade like black, grey, brown, navy or dark green are best.

There are a few reasons for this, although none have very much to do with the wildlife, given most safari animals only see in black and white.

Instead, natural colours make for the best safari shoes in my opinion, simply because a) they match with most other clothing colours well, which makes packing a lot easier and b) they show up the dirt less, which makes cleaning them (or not) a lot easier!

I also personally think natural colours look a lot more stylish than say, a bright pink pair, but this is a cosmetic point, rather than anything practical and certainly down to personal choice.

Waterproofing

desert safari shoes

We’ve touched on this already, but if you’re travelling anywhere in Africa during the rainy season, waterproof safari shoes are a must.

Even outside of rainy season, humid conditions in East Africa make waterproof boots necessary in my opinion.

Equally, heavy morning dews, which are not uncommon in Southern Africa, make a safari shoe made from Gore-Tex a good option here too.

Temperature

desert safari shoes

Safari shoes that keep your feet cool through good ventilation, will definitely make your safari a more enjoyable experience, especially if you’re travelling in the summer season in Southern Africa, for example, where the temperatures can be scorching between the months of December and February.

However, travelling here in the winter months (June to August) can be very cold and in this case, a warm, well-insulated boot would be best.

desert safari shoes

As travellers, we always need to consider weight when packing and selecting something lightweight as your safari shoe of choice is a great option.

Not only will this keep luggage weight down, but having a big, clumpy boot on your foot when you’re clambering in and out of safari vehicles, trying to set up camp or going trekking is never fun.

Of course, you have to balance this against protection, but do remember that as light as possible is a good motto to stick to in my book.

And so we get to protection.

A good sole is very important on any safari shoe in order to help support the arch of your foot and protect it from knocks and bumps.

Ankle support can range from a low-rise trainer, runner or walking shoe, to a full height hiking boot, so whatever you choose, just make sure they fit snuggly around the ankle to offer it support.

When it comes to protection, a mid-length hiking boot can be a good option here, balancing the best of both worlds in terms of protection and weight.

Flexibility

desert safari shoes

Again, it’s about a trade-off when it comes to protection vs flexibility in a safari shoe, but generally, I would lean towards something lighter and more flexible than something heavy and stiffer.

This is the problem with very sturdy leather hiking boots in my opinion, they are just too heavy and too stiff.

A light, mid-length hiking boot, made from breathable Gore-Tex, or a sturdy trail running shoe with good support and a thick sole, would make much better options if you ask me.

desert safari shoes

But one feature where you shouldn’t compromise, is grip.

This is key in any safari shoe you choose and whether it’s a good sandal, a light runner or a sturdy hiking boot, good grip is a must.

5 Top Safari Shoes Based on Practical Features

#1 For a lovely natural coloured shoe that goes with most things and won’t show up the dirt easily, these Salomon X Ultra 3 GTX walking shoes are perfect.

#2 For waterproofing points, I really do think these Keen Terradora waterproof hiking boots are hard to beat. They are mid-length too, which means good ankle support, but less weight.

#3 When it comes to temperature, if you need something that will keep your feet warm, but that is also breathable, these Saucony Peregrine trail runners are superb and also offer excellent grip and good protection.

#4 If a lightweight safari shoe is crucial to you, then maybe stick to a simple runner or trainer as your footwear of choice. These New Balance 880v9 GTX are waterproof and weigh less than 300 grams! Good protection and durability too.

#5 And in terms of flexibility, it’s hard to look past the Asics Metarun , which have a Gel technology that not only makes them super responsive, but also 55% lighter than your standard pair of runners.

DON’T HEAD OUT ON SAFARI WITHOUT THESE OTHER 5 ESSENTIALS

#1 Binoculars – They don’t’ need to be expensive, but my cheap Eurohike pair were a great investment.

#2 Toilet Paper – Bush toilets don’t generally provide it!

#3 Natural Sunscreen & Sun Hat – Things get hot on safari so do be prepared.

#4 Good Camera & Lens – An absolute must if you’re looking to capture the incredible landscape and wildlife. I love my mirrorless Sony A6000 , which is light, compact and robust – ideal for Africa travel.

#5 Sarong – Whether it’s covering your shoulders from the sun, using as a pillow on long bus journeys or protecting yourself from dust on safari, a sarong is a great multi-purpose travel item for Africa.

Best Women’s Shoes for an African Safari

Zimbabwe, Victoria Falls, Me at the Falls

I’m putting in this section about the best women’s shoes for an African safari quite simply because many women email me with this question, so ladies I’m dedicating this part to you!

We’ve touched on the colour issue above, but to reiterate, I highly suggest keeping it stylish and coordinated with natural colour footwear that is grey or black.

I’d also see if you can extend your shoe allowance to 2 pairs – both a good mid-length hiking boot / decent walking shoe and a pair of excellent, support sandals will come in very handy.

This should allow you to cover most bases in terms of walking / vehicle safaris and chilling at a lodge / camping, as well as across both South and East Africa if you’re on a long trip.

Remember your feet will swell in the heat and you might be using your hiking boot with a thick sock, so factor these elements in too when trying on your safari shoe.

desert safari shoes

Speaking from my own experience as a female traveller, I wore my Birkenstock sandals during almost all my safaris in Southern Africa because it was so hot.

However, in East Africa, I wore nothing but by brown Doc Martens due to the wet and muddy conditions.

Note these weren’t ideal, but I was on a huge overland trip from Cairo to Cape Town at the time, so these were the type of boots that covered all bases – fashion and practical – for such a diverse adventure.

3 Best Safari Shoes for Women

#1 I know I keep banging on about them, but it’s just so hard to beat a good pair of Arizona Birkenstocks if you’re looking for the perfect safari sandal ladies.

#2 For a good walking shoe, I just think North Face Litewave are a lovely light and stylish option for women.

#3 And for boots, Merell Siren are light, mid-length, waterproof and about as pretty as a hiking boot can get!

3 Best Overall Pairs of Safari Shoes

South Africa, Kruger National Park, Male Elephant

With this information in mind therefore, you can see that it’s actually impossible to nail down just 1 pair of shoes that are the best shoes for an African safari.

It’s a bit like saying, what are the best shoes for your Europe?

Well, it depends on where you’re going, when and what you’ll be doing there.

Same applies to safari shoes, but based on my experiences in Southern, East, Northern and the Horn of Africa, I’ve come up with 3 great pairs that between them cover all eventualities.

Read on to discover what my overall 3 best shoes for an Africa safari are…. and why!

And, don’t forget, if you’re struggling to decide where to safari (it’s confusing I know!) then check out these top safari tour picks for some seriously super inspiration!

#1 Teva Women’s Tirra Sandal

desert safari shoes

What I like most about these sandals compared to other women’s activewear sandals is their graceful appearance, with thin straps, which are perfect for long, thin feet like mine!

As one of the original activewear sandal brands Teva are experts in their field and these Tirra models are waterproof with a strong, secure strapping configuration that offers multiple adjustments to ensure a perfect fit.

In addition to this, the shoc pad technology offers superb comfort, with a durable footbed giving super support and spider rubbles soles providing some great grip.

Ideal for Southern Africa in particular, the great ventilation of these shoes is just what you want for the dry, hot conditions in this part of the continent in peak safari season.

Light, quick and easy to slip on and off, these sandals will take up little room in your luggage.

Available in a huge range of colours, the comfortable and supporting Teva’s Women Tirra Sandals would be an excellent choice as one of the best shoes for African safari experiences.

#2 Saucony Women’s Grid Excursion TR9 Trail Running Shoe

desert safari shoes

Good for walking or cycling safaris like Hells Gate National Park in Kenya or Matapos National Park in Zimbabwe , a pair of trail running shoes are the 2 nd pair on my list of the best for shoes for an African safari.

With tons of great brand to choose, I really love this pair of Saucony Women’s Grid Excursion TR9 Trail Running Shoes , which are great for all sorts of outdoor adventure, including safaris!

Light and durable, these top safari shoes won’t take up much room or weight in your bag.

They can also double as city footwear, perfect for the more urban areas of Africa or travel days, especially given their breathable mesh panels and excellent ventilation.

In addition to keeping your foot cool when on safari, the mesh panel’s of the Saucony Women’s Grid Excursion TR9 Trail Running Shoe are also great for keeping dust and dirt out – an excellent feature in the Africa environment!

The smart cushioning system and rubber outsole also ensure excellent grip and traction.

Perfect for safaris across Africa, these Saucony Women’s Grid Excursion TR9 Trail Running Shoes would work during dawn and night safaris, when the cold weather means you’ll need something that completely covers your foot, but isn’t overly bulky or cumbersome.

#3 KEEN Women’s Targhee II Mid WP Hiking Boot

desert safari shoes

When it comes to safari hiking boots, the Keen’s Women’s Targhee II Mid WP Hiking Boot offers unparalleled comfort and durability with excellent value for money.

Breathable, with a protective toe cap and excellent traction, these are definitely one of the best for shoes for African safari trips, such as gorilla trekking in East Africa where the ground is muddy, wet and unstable.

With an outstanding waterproof rating, the KEEN Women’s Targhee II Mid WP Hiking Boot would actually be the perfect pair of shoes for safaris across East Africa, where it can rain at any time of year and where conditions can quickly become slippery.

In the dense jungle areas of Africa, fire-ants are an additional threat, so having a hiking boot, rather than a lower supporting shoe here, is going to help you combat these pesky insects too.

As hiking boots go, I love the look of the KEEN Women’s Targhee II Mid WP Hiking Boot , which is pretty stylish as well as practical.

The brown, ‘shitake’ colour scheme they offer are almost fashionable!

You can even wear these on travel days without feeling like the total tourist hiker too!

As well as in East Africa, these are also one of the best shoes for African safari adventures if you are travelling in Southern Africa in the winter (when its freezing and you’ll likely need a boot!) as well as further north in the Horn of Africa.

For example, I wore hiking boots a lot in Ethiopia, in particular when trekking in Simien Mountains National Park and in the Danakil Depression.

The Best Shoes for a Safari

desert safari shoes

Choosing the wrong footwear can make your safari a sour one.

Getting the wrong shoes can actually make or break your safari trip. Especially if you will be venturing into the African wilderness where there are no shops or retail store to get a shoe replacement.

This article will help you identify some comfortable shoes that you can take on your African safari.

Make sure you have walked them in before you depart for your safari so you are comfortable and comfortable with the shoes you choose.

Table of Contents

While traveling you want to minimise on travel accessories and definitely leave fins, goggles and gadgets at home. Same with shoes only carry the shoes you are going to use on your travel.

You will need some light comfortable shoes or even trainers for whe you are in the cities and towns. You will need hiking shoes if you will be on safari and possibily walking on the African savannah. And finally you will need a pair of sandles or flip flops is you will be spending time at the beach and also for the evenings when you are at the lodge or hotel.

If you are walking through muddy forest conditions, sand, or river crossings, a medium-high-rise, waterproof boot with a built-in tongue will keep water and sand out and keep you comfortable.

You should expect your hiking boots to show less dirt if they are darker. Go for a comfortable, strong, and lightweight pair of shoes. For wet conditions, you must purchase a boot with traction in its soles, and you should have higher ankle padding for support and to prevent pesky ants.

If you are paranoid about being bitten by a snake, wear mid- or tall hiking boots (safari boots) instead of low hiking shoes for your ankle protection. Wearing tall hiking boots is overkill for me personally, and they can be very uncomfortable in the hot months

Don’t Pack Too Many Shoes

It is also important to pack light. Shoes are often heavy, bulky travel items and will cost you more with the airlines and also be an inconvinience while traveling.

What Kind of Shoes Should You Pack?

Consider leather shoes. Leather shoes are usually water resistant and easy to clean. If you walk thru mud, it’s much easier to throw the leather into the sink to wash which is not the case with cloth shoes and sometimes even trainers.

Synthetic safari boots do not have the classic look, but they weigh less and have more flexibility than leather boots which tend to be more expensive. In fact, most safari guides these days opt for these new style of boots due to their practicality and comfort. Why Sometimes You Need to Just Wear Normal Shoes

Weight of the shoe is also a very important factor. Finding a lightweight and durable boot is essential for walking safaris. The boot must still be able to offer you arch support and provide stability.

Our Top Picks Best Safari Shoes

Why We Love Them

These shoes are light very comfortable and handmade in Africa. They are pure leather and have rubber soles which aid in grip. They are our top pick for safari shoes and can be worn by all genders.

The Kind Of Sandals You Should Pack

You should also bring a pair of sandals or flip flops for pool areas if you will be spending some time at the pool.

Also if you are planning a coastal or beach vacation, flip flops or sandals would be appropriate.

In hot weather, you can wear flip flops everyday, but I prefer good quality sandals that have a thick sole. To avoid irritation, thick soles are designed for comfort.

You can use them to walk around camp, you should choose thick-soled sandals. Thorns are an issue in Africa, and thin-soled sandals will not protect your feet.

The best sandals I have used are from companies that make high-quality sandals that last a long time even after your African safari adventure.

It is important to pack light when going on an African safari. Comfort is very important and you shouldn’t place too much weight on your feet. It is also important to dress accordingly at the lodge and beach.

What to Wear in Desert Safari?

First-time visitors in Dubai find themselves in a fix when deciding what to wear in Desert Safari. In this comprehensive guide, we will answer all your queries about the right attire for desert safari .

Thinking of what to wear in Dubai desert safari? Wear what is comfortable and doesn’t get in the way of this adventurous experience. Desert safari would surely get your adrenaline kicking. However, those who have experienced it cited that they could not enjoy it to its full extent due to a lack of proper clothing. Dressing up for the desert safari is no less than skill. If you want to enjoy the desert safari fully, you want to make sure that you are dressed accordingly.

If you are traveling to Dubai , you would surely want to pack up different outfits as the weather gets pretty unpredictable. What you wear on the beach won’t be suitable for a museum and absolutely not for a mosque. When contemplating what to wear to desert safari Dubai, you should know that since it’s a Muslim country, you have to dress modestly. Women, particularly, have to cover their knees and shoulders.

When it comes to the question of how to dress for Dubai desert safari, there is no one perfect answer. How come? Let’s delve a bit deeper.

The Unpredictable Desert Weather.

To perfectly answer how to dress for Dubai desert safari, your clothes should be not only breathable but also adjustable. How so? Well, they should be suitable for both hot and cold temperatures and dust. Lots of it. The afternoons in the desert are sweltering. They can get blazing hot and sunny. And even though deserts are hot all the time, the early morning, evenings, and late nights get cold.

What to Wear in Dubai Desert Safari?

Ideally, you should opt for loose-fitted clothing. Cotton and linen clothing is comfortable, cool, and perfect for an early morning desert safari. A light jacket or a hoodie is ideal for an evening desert safari to continue into the night.

Natural Fiber: It is best to wear clothing made from natural fibers as they are the best for beating the desert heat.

Culturally Sensitive Clothing: When it comes to style, tourists must exhibit a sense of cultural sensitivity when deciding what to wear in desert safari during summer. They must dress modestly while being dressed for the weather. Put cultural sensitivity and modesty before fashion.

Dressing Styles: Since meals are eaten on the floor, it is best to avoid long fitted dresses and short skirts. A better option would be to wear loose cotton trousers or culottes and shirts. This answers what to wear to desert safari Dubai for summers. And when it’s winter, jeans and leggings are acceptable. Keep a light shawl and sweater/jacket with you as well. Ladies should don shirts that are at least mid-thigh length.

Important Note:  When taking the desert sports or dune bashing, women should wear a sports bra or something more structured. Keep something soft to wrap around your face and head to protect from dust and sand while camel riding and quad biking.

Shoes: If you have not been to Dubai, what to wear in Desert Safari is quite the question as one has to bear numerous things in mind. However, it is not only clothes you should think about. The right shoes and accessories are equally important. It would be best to pack two sets of shoes. Closed-toe trainers, sneakers or light boots are best for desert motorsports and sandboarding. They would keep your feet warm at the camp at night.

Keep a spare pair of flip-flops or sandals for other activities around the desert camp.

Accessories: Whether it’s winter or summer, the UAE sun is strong. Invest in a pair of quality sunglasses. If not, keep a hat with you or a light shawl to save your face and eyes from direct sunlight. Another must-have is sunscreen. It is best to protect yourself against sunburns.

However, while selecting sunscreen, make sure it is not too greasy or heavily scented. A lip balm will protect your lips from cracking as the desert is both dry and dusty.

How to Dress for Dubai Desert Safari Activities?

Since Dubai desert safari has a lot of activities, here is a list of what to wear to desert safari Dubai according to different activities:

Camel Riding When it comes to camel riding, know that it is not the most sophisticated of rides. It is even scary for some. So, it’s better to wear loose trousers or culottes over skirts.

Dune Bashing The 4×4 that will pick you up from the city would take you to the camp from the rugged dune entry. Bear in mind that will be a bumpy ride. Expect to be thrown around. You have to ensure that you are wearing the right attire.

Quad Biking Although an optional sports activity, it is best to be prepared in case you decide to go for it. Some camps have restrictions on wearing closed-toe footwear only. It is best to keep a set of sportswear and something to tie back long hair. This goes for both the genders.

Sandboarding Although a given, sandboarding comes with a great amount of sand. Wear closed-toe footwear with trousers. Ditch the shorts or skirts.

BBQ & Entertainment for the Night The evening camps end the day with a meal that is served on rugs placed on the floor. Think of what would be most comfortable for sitting on the ground, and wear that.

That’s it for how to dress for Dubai desert safari. Hope you found this guide helpful!

Dressing for Desert Activities in Dubai

Desert Safari is a unique experience that offers the chance to explore the desert landscape and learn about the traditional way of life in the UAE.

The safari typically begins with a 4x4 pick-up from your hotel, followed by an exciting drive into the desert. Once at the camp, you can try your hand at sandboarding, ride a camel, or simply relax and enjoy the stunning sunset. After dark, there will be a delicious barbecue dinner under the stars, followed by traditional entertainment such as belly dancing and henna painting. Dressing appropriately for all the activities makes it easier to have a fun-filled experience.

Desert safari Dubai Clothing

Dune Bashing

  • The rugged ride in the sand is not for the faint-hearted. Make sure to wear clothes that hold on to their place.
  • Skirts, Sarees, or similar free-flowing clothes must be avoided to handle the tussle of the ride safely.
  • Outfits and accessories with spikes or pointy details should be avoided for the safety of yourself and others in the vehicle.

Desert safari Dubai Clothing

Camel Riding

Camel Riding is a fun experience and a chance to relive the desert backdrop shown in the movies. However, it may not always be the most comfortable experience, especially if it is your first time riding a camel. Choose shorts over skirts, and pants over dresses. Make sure the outfit is not made or course material or has sharp details on it, as it can potentially hurt the camel.

Desert safari Dubai Clothing

Sandboarding

Comfortable footwear is the key when it comes to a comfortable sand experience. Choose closed-toe footwear to avoid the sand entering between your toes and creating a gritty base. Again, shorts over skirts and free-flowing outfits to get better traction while sandboarding.

Desert safari Dubai Clothing

Quad Biking

You’ll want something to tie back long hair and sports-wear clothing would be best.

For the sport-loving squad, there is no better adventure than Quad Biking in the desert. Avoid heels, short skirts, and loose hair to avoid potential risks while biking. Closed-toe footwear should be worn at all costs.

BBQ Dinner & Entertainment

BBQ Dinners are typically served on rugs on the floor. Hence, choosing outfits that are comfortable while sitting on the floor is ideal. The tanoura show and belly dancing also happens while everyone is seated. Short skirts are best avoided. Carrying extra tops is recommended, so you can change into a fresh pair after all the activities during the day. Sandals or flip-flops can be used while sitting down.

Footwear for your Desert Safari

When planning a desert safari, it is important to choose the right footwear. The last thing you want is to end up with blisters or worse, injured feet. While there are many types of shoes on the market, not all of them are suitable for walking in sandy, often uneven terrain. The key is to find shoes that will keep your feet cool while also providing adequate protection from the hot sand and sharp rocks.

Closed-toe shoes are a must to protect your feet from scorpions and other desert creatures. A good pair of desert boots made of breathable material with a sturdy sole can provide traction on loose sand. In addition, you should choose those desert boots that are both comfortable and lightweight, as you will likely be doing a lot of walking during your safari. Sandals or light hiking shoes are a good choice for keeping your feet cool, but make sure they have a good grip to prevent slipping. And if you're planning on doing any camel riding, be sure to wear shoes that won't fall off easily.

With the right footwear, you'll be able to enjoy your desert safari experience to the fullest.

Accessories for your Desert Safari

  • Sunglasses to protect your eyes from the harsh rays.
  • A sand proof bag to keep all your devices.
  • Hats to protect you from the sun.
  • Binoculars can come in handy for spotting wildlife.
  • Plenty of sunscreen for all the UV rays in the desert (minimum SPF 50).
  • Lip balm with a minimum SPF of 30.
  • Deodorants and antiperspirant wipes to stay fresh throughout the safari.
  • A spacious backpack to store all your belongings.
  • A sturdy waist bag that stays in place to store tissues, mobile, etc.

The next step is what to wear or  what do people wear in the desert ; there are so many options like wearing a jumpsuit, causal cotton pants, Loose or stretchy pants, or even leggings, Bermuda Shorts, Or high-rise long shorts.

The shorts idea is best for summer. But during winter, “November to February the weather gets cold in the middle of the desert after sunset and early morning.

For the tops, I will recommend at least half sleeve shirts. Half sleeve shirts work in both winter & summer as you have to follow the rules of the UAE dress code. So if you are wearing a jumpsuit, wear a blouse on it. So here our dress issue gets resolved; now come to the point, wear sneakers, sandals, or flip-flops. According to our experience, sandals and flip-flop are the best options. If you wear sneakers, you will be bringing a lot of sand back to the hotel as a souvenir. As well as you get irritated while removing sand from your sneakers as your feet remain in the sand all the time during your desert trip.

Outfit for Camel Ride

Camel ride in the Dubai desert  is one the most demanding and thrilling activities; wear some stretchable clothes if you go for a  camel trekking tour , which is around 30 minutes. Bring a  scarf , wear your  shades , and must use  sunscreen . The best way to protect yourself from sunburns during a camel ride is by covering yourself with sunscreen. Wearing clothes with zipper pockets can help keep your belongings secure and prevent them from falling out during the camel ride.
  • A scarf or tight-fitting cap or hat:  A scarf or cap can help protect your head and neck from the sun and wind and keep your hair out of your face. We recommend using a scarf so you can cover your nose and mouth. It helps to stop the sand from entering your mouth.
  • Sunscreen:  It is important to protect your skin from the intense sun in Dubai, so make sure to apply sunscreen with a high SPF before your camel ride.
  • Sunglasses:  Sunglasses will protect your eyes from the sun and also the blowing sand.

Wear something somewhat loose-fitted, so they’re comfortable to be in. As you have to sit in a land cruiser for at least an hour, you have to enjoy a camel ride, sandboarding, and quad biking. You can also buy an Arabian headscarf from the desert.

A final thought about what to wear during the desert tour, A  hoodie or a bulky pullover , half-sleeved tops & comfortable trousers, bring  Sunglasses ,  Hat & Light Shawl  use  Sunscreen  and  Lip balm  during camel ride and quad biking and at end wear sandals or flip-flops. The Perfect Footwear for Dubai's Desert Safaris

The Importance of Proper Footwear  Wandering the vast expanse of the desert isn’t just about gazing at the horizon; it’s about doing it right.

  • Selecting the perfect shoe can make a world of difference. Picture this: you’re trudging through fine sand, with each step sinking you deeper. If you’re not wearing the right shoes, this picturesque journey can quickly become uncomfortable.
  • The desert may seem benign, but it hides many challenges – the searing heat of the midday sun or the surprisingly chilly nights. Proper footwear ensures you’re ready for these unpredictable shifts, protecting your feet from potential injuries and burns.

Understanding the Desert Terrain

  • Ever tried walking on a beach? Now, imagine that with shifting dunes that make each step a mini workout. The desert is unpredictable, and your shoes must rise to the occasion.
  • For the uninitiated, deserts can be full of surprises. While the days are hot and might make you want to throw on some sandals, nights can get cold, warranting sturdier footwear.

Best Footwear Choices

  • While the temptation to slip into sandals is real, closed shoes offer more protection against the desert’s challenges. They guard against hot sands and unexpected critters, protecting your feet.
  • Ever heard the saying, “It’s not about the shoe, but the material”? Okay, maybe that’s not an actual saying, but breathable materials make a significant difference in the desert. They allow your feet to breathe, reducing sweating and discomfort.
  • Sandals may offer ease, but sneakers win in the protection department. However, particular specialized sandals, designed for desert terrains could be a middle ground. Weigh the pros and cons based on your desert safari’s planned activities.

Specialized Desert Boots

  • Purpose-built for the desert, these boots offer maximum protection. They’re every desert adventurer’s dream, from their high ankle support to the heat-resistant material.
  • Several renowned brands, such as  Timberland  and Merrell, offer specialized desert boots. Depending on your budget and requirements, you can find a boot that’s perfect for you.

Desert Safari Activities & Footwear

Embarking on a desert safari promises many unique activities, each with its own challenges and requirements. With every thrilling activity, from dune bashing to horse riding, ensuring that your feet are clad in the best possible footwear tailored to the adventure you’re diving into is vital. Let’s explore the world of shoes for each of these exciting desert escapades.

1. Dune Bashing and Shoes

This exhilarating activity involves driving aggressively over dunes; the right shoes can make all the difference.

Sneakers with a rubber sole or hiking boots are ideal for this activity. Breathability is a plus, as it can get entirely heated inside the vehicle.

2. Footwear For Camel Riding

A desert safari is incomplete without the iconic camel ride.

Footwear Recommendations:  Stability is the name of the game here. Shoes with a firm grip will help you remain steady atop these majestic creatures. Ankle boots or lace-up shoes are preferred as they prevent sand from entering and offer a snug fit, which is crucial when high up on a camel’s back.

3. Footwear For Sandboarding

Imagine snowboarding but on golden dunes!

Footwear Recommendations:  For sandboarding, traction is crucial. Opt for shoes that provide a good grip to prevent slips and falls. High ankle sneakers or boots with deep treads are suitable for this adrenaline-pumping activity.

4. Footwear for Quad Riding in the Desert

Quad bikes offer a thrilling way to explore the vast desert landscape.

Footwear Recommendations:  Shoes that offer protection against the heat, sand, and potential debris kicked up by the bike are essential. Closed-toe, sturdy shoes like hiking boots or specialized biking shoes are the top choices. They not only provide the necessary grip on the quad’s footrests but also ensure your feet are shielded from the elements.

5. Dune Buggy Ride Footwear

Dune buggies provide a unique experience of conquering the desert terrains.

Footwear Recommendations:  For dune buggy rides, look for shoes that grant stability and comfort. Closed shoes with a snug fit, such as sports sneakers, will prevent sand from entering and ensure a firm grip on the buggy’s pedals.

6. Footwear for Dirt Biking in the Desert

Dirt biking is a heart-pounding activity that requires the utmost precision.

Footwear Recommendations:  Specialized dirt biking boots are your best bet. They’re designed to offer maximum protection from impacts, are heat resistant, and provide excellent grip on the bike’s pedals. If you don’t have access to these, at the very least, wear high ankle boots to protect against potential sprains and injuries.

7. Horse Riding Footwear

Riding boots are the classic choice for this activity. They offer protection against chafing from the saddle and ensure your feet sit securely in the stirrups. In their absence, go for closed, calf-length boots with a slight heel to prevent your foot from sliding through the stirrup.

8. Desert Walk Footwear

Walking in the desert is a meditative experience, allowing you to connect with nature.

Footwear Recommendations:  Comfort is paramount here. Choose lightweight, breathable shoes, preferably with a mid or high ankle to prevent sand ingress. Trail shoes or desert walking boots with a good grip and support are ideal.

You can bring a backpack or purse to carry any essentials, such as sunscreen, glasses, or a camera.

What to Wear on a Dubai Desert Safari

Balancing cultural sensitivity with practicality; how to prepare for your first Dubai desert safari

Got your Dubai tour tickets booked? Waiting for your pick-up driver for your first Dubai desert experience then suddenly realised you’ve got absolutely no idea what to wear?

Don’t worry, you’re not alone!

What to wear in Dubai

Dressing for Dubai can be a prickly subject; on the one hand, the headline dress code advice is to always dress with modesty, you’re going to a Muslim country.

Then, on the other hand, your Instagram feed is full of half-dressed models showing off in the sun. Add in conflicting travel forum advice about what is and isn’t appropriate in different situations. It IS confusing!!

We try and tackle as many of these different scenarios as possible in our “ what to wear in Dubai ” guide over here. However, the important thing to note is you are likely going to want a few different outfits when packing for Dubai!

Even on a short stopover, you could change outfits half a dozen times; what may be practical and appropriate for the beach , most certainly isn’t for a museum or a mosque . A Dubai Desert Safari brings a whole new set of wardrobe dilemmas!

As the desert safari is one of the most popular activities to try when you’re visiting Dubai. We’re going to take a deep dive into exactly what you should expect, what you’ll be doing on a desert safari, and therefore, how to dress appropriately.

Take all this advice with a grain of salt and do whatever feels right for YOU and your situation. Just keep modesty and cultural sensitivity in mind, ahead of fashion.

What should I consider when dressing for the desert in Dubai?

Dressing for the weather.

Even a short distance from the skyscrapers the temperature changes. In winter this change can be as much as 10 degrees celsius cooler once you’re away from the city. Whilst you may have been in bathers at the beach during the day, a nighttime desert safari in Dubai you’ll want long jeans and a pullover or cardigan.

It’s very unlikely it will rain or you’ll need a thicker down coat, a light, long sleeve top should be fine.

Conversely, in summer it’s hot. Sometimes there just aren’t enough superlatives to describe hot to the first-timer!

You will want to consider breathable materials that work well with profuse sweating; think cotton, linen, and rayon material. Accept whatever you are wearing will sweat through even if you are not normally a heavy perspirer!

Dressing for Desert Activities in Dubai

Your desert safari is likely to include a variety of activities from sedate to adrenaline pumping! Think about scenarios such as:

  • Dune Bashing – the 4×4 that picks you up from the city will no doubt choose the rugged dune entry to the camp in order to impress! Ladies particularly you may want to consider you’re well supported as you will get thrown around in the car (NB not recommend for under 5’s, pregnant ladies or those with back, heart conditions etc)
  • Camel Riding – almost a must for your first desert experience so do thing practically how you will ride. Camel riding is not the most elegant of activities so definitely consider shorts and trousers over skirts, and hold on to any lose items!
  • Sand boarding – the thrill of hitting the dunes comes with a lot of sand! Think practically about proper closed toe footwear and where that sand will end up when you inevitably come crashing down! Trousers are a recommendation over skirts or shorts.
  • Quad Biking/Fat Tire Bikes – these are normally optional extra desert sports. Some camps may have strict rules that only closed toe footwear can be worn. Again, when you’re straddling something a short skirt is impratical. You’ll want something to tie back long hair and sports-wear clothing would be best.
  • BBQ Dinner & Entertainment – your evening camps will end on a meal most likely taken seated on rugs on the floor. Think practically how you will comfortably sit on the ground, and the evening may be finished with a little light dancing. If you’ve partaken in a desert sport beforehand, you may want a fresh shirt with you and a litte something to freshen up (antipersperient) before you dine.

We cover more on the exact activities you can participate in on a Dubai desert safari here .

Dressing for Cultural Sensitivity

It’s important for tourists to remain culturally sensitive when they’re visiting the UAE, but also dress for the weather. There’s a balance that can be easily struck when preparing for a trip to Dubai between being culturally sensitive and practical – none more so than when you’re on a desert safari.

The Dubai dress code does not require women to be fully covered at all times. Nor is the wearing of shorts forbidden. As a very standard rule of thumb, men and women should be looking to be covering their shoulders and knees, but there’s flexibility in this.

Dubai Desert Safari Dresscode

So summing it all up from this advice, what you actually wear is whatever will make you feel most comfortable. Rather than a packing list, these are our top tips.

  • Wear loose clothing made from natural fibers to best deal with the sand and heat. Think materials such as cotton, linen and rayon, which work well in the heat.
  • Ladies should avoid short skirts as they are not very practical and meals are often eaten on the floor.
  • Culottes and loose cotton trousers or shirts are better than clingy clothing in summer. In winter, jeans or leggings will be fine, but suggested you wear a shirt covering your bottom.
  • Shorts above your knees are OK, but avoid your shorty shorts with your bottom clearly visible, try to keep to at least mid-thigh length.
  • A sleeveless shirt or tank top may be OK in some situations, but overtly tight, clingy clothes that show excessive cleavage and leave nothing to the imagination are definitely NOT OK.
  • Ladies may want a sports bra or something more structured if taking on desert sports and dune bashing.
  • You may want two sets of shoes with you; closed-toe trainers for sandboarding and any desert motorsports, plus a spare pair of flip flops for other activities and around the desert camp.
  • Something to wrap around your head and face to protect you from the sand and dust – especially during quad biking and camel riding.
  • A sweater or a cardigan if visiting in the coolest months of winter.

And what to pack on a Dubai desert safari other than clothing

Your tour will most likely take care of food and water but we recommend you also pack:

  • Sunscreen, sunglasses and a hat if any portion of your trip is during the day.
  • Sanitizer for before eating and after touching camels.
  • Take tissues and wet wipes especially if you’re travelling with children.
  • Anti-persperiant wipes in the peak of summer, or a hanky, sweat towel of some sort.
  • You may find coating everyone’s legs in a talc/beach powder before you go helpful for reducing some (never all!) of the sand.
  • Extra cash if you will be partaking in add on activities not included in your general tour (eg fat bikes, quad biking, dune buggies may be paid extras)
  • A spare battery pack for your phone/camera – you’ll be taking a lot of photos!
  • A sand proof bag to keep all this gear in
  • Leave your accessories and other valuables in the hotel safe – losing a favourite watch or earring in the sand, we promise you, it will be almost impossible to find again.

  • If you are going on a classic game drive type of safari, then pack comfortable women's safari shoes to wear on game drive but which are able to double as good walking shoes for a walk in the bush - an activity we highly recommend. Note that if you do not have walking shoes with you on game drive then your guide may decide against a quick impromptu walk in the bush
  • Also take a pair of women's safari shoes to wear around the camp. These may be the same pair as your select for the above, but it may also be a pair of cooler sandals, pumps, or similar.
  • For full-on walking safaris make sure you take women's safari shoes which are made for longer hikes - and ensure that you walk them in properly before you go on safari. You may prefer low rise canvas trail shoes or leather higher rise boots - the preference is purely personal.
  • If you are going on a walking safari in sandy areas (check with the walking safari company you have booked with) then we suggest that you pack higher rise boots with a built in tongue - such as our Rufiji™ APU Safari Combat Boots - as this will minimise the amount of sand which goes into the shoe which will cause discomfort.
  • We would still take a a pair of cooler women's shoes or sandals for before and after walks when around the camp.
  • Safari tip: always check your shoes for small snakes, scorpions, spiders and insects before putting them on.

The Ultimate Desert Safari Outfit Guide

The fascinating golden dunes are an integral part of Dubai’s culture and traditions. The desert safari provides a great opportunity to explore the heart of the grand dunes, exotic desert wildlife, unique experiences, and high-octane adventures. As you look to indulge in the perfect desert expedition, we bring you the right dress code for a desert safari in Dubai  that you should follow.

Parameters to consider when finalizing your outfit for the desert safari

It is essential to first understand the obstacles that desert surroundings provide. There are some factors to consider when planning your trip through the desert.

desert safari outfit

Deserts are well-known for their significant temperature changes. The temperature may reach to scorching heights during the day and drop to freezing lows at night. Dressing in layers is vital for adapting to these changes.

Dubai's Dunes Await Your Dune Buggy Ride

The desert weather is harsh and unforgiving, mainly during the day, and is just the opposite at night. When you are finalizing your outfit, it is necessary to consider which time of the day you want to go on a desert safari. Humidity, wind speed, and climatic conditions play a key role. If light and breathable attire is required during the day, warm and cosy clothes are apt for the night.  The desert sun may be harsh, and UV radiation levels are high. It is critical to protect your skin and eyes from sunburn and injury. Choosing sun-safe clothing and accessories is vital. Fine sand and dust are prevalent in desert environments and can get into every nook and cranny, including your clothes. Opt for clothing that helps keep these irritants at bay.  Desert weather can be unpredictable. Dust storms, sudden rain, and strong winds are all possibilities. Be prepared for anything.

Cultural Sensitivity

Even though Dubai is a modern metropolis, it still maintains the essence and charm of its glorious past, culture, and traditions. Maintaining cultural sensitivity and respecting the local culture, especially the dress code for women, is an absolute must. Avoid wearing revealing or transparent clothes.  Prefer to cover your shoulders and knees .

Different Types of Indulgence

The Desert Safari Dubai offers different adventures and activities as part of its indulgence. For participating in sport adventures such as camel riding, sandboarding, or desert camping activities during the  evening desert safari , you should dress modestly and smartly so that it does not interrupt your fun ventures. For example, wear comfortable and shoes or sandals that have a good grip and keeps your feet cool while providing adequate protection from the sand, grit, and rock.

Evening Desert Safari Dubai

Essentials to Consider for Your Desert Safari Outfit

The desert environment is dusty, rough, and harsh for travellers. Whenever you are indulging in a unique experience such as the Dubai desert safari, you should always consider your comfort and safety from the sun’s rays and be ready for the changes in weather and temperature in the harsh and rough desert terrain.

Fabric of the Clothing

Always wear light and breathable natural fabrics, such as cotton or linen. Loose-fitting clothes are comfortable and keep you cool all through the day. Lightweight and breathable natural fabrics help regulate body temperature, which is essential in a hot and relentless environment such as the desert. Your attire should be comfortable and give you the much-needed flexibility while navigating the sandy terrain.

Long-Sleeved Shirts, T-Shirts and Pants

Long-sleeved shirts or t-shirts, along with full-sleeve pants, are ideal for the safari day trip, as they will shield you from the hot sun rays and also keep you cosy and warm during the nights. In addition, these clothes are breathable and lightweight, and protect you from sunburns while being out in the desert. It is better to avoid wearing jeans for your desert excursion, as you can feel uncomfortable in them. You must choose to wear light weight trousers or shorts. Trousers are convenient if you plan to participate in sand activities such as, sandboarding, dune bashing, camel riding, etc.

Light Weight Jacket

A light weight breathable jacket is essential to carry for your desert safari trip. Choose the one that offers protection against the wind and dust, while allowing ventilation.

Invest in a Nice Set of Sunscreen, Shades, and a Hat

As you must have realized by now, the sun in the desert is relentless and unforgiving, especially during the daytime.  Hence, you must take appropriate measures to safeguard your eyes and skin by using a good pair of shades and a good SPF-rated sunscreen. Taking the right precautions is essential to safeguard yourself from the blazing rays of the sun. The relentless sun rays can cause discomfort to your eyes and skin during the journey, especially when travelling during the afternoons or early evenings. In addition to this, wearing a hat can also help in keeping your head cool during the desert expedition.

Sturdy and Comfortable Footwear

The right footwear is crucial for your journey as the fine sands can easily get between your shoes, causing skin irritation and allergies. Always wear close-footed shoes with a good grip when embarking on your desert adventure. Using open-footed shoes can expose your feet to the hot desert terrain, which can be disastrous for your expedition.

Shemagh or Scarf

This fabric will serve as your trusted desert buddy, as it multitasks well, shielding your face and neck and helping to keep the desert dust away from your skin. Coughing and sneezing while inhaling the dust is something that you can be totally avoided with this head cover. In addition, you can also shield yourself from the blazing sun’s rays.

Essential Accessories

You should think about bringing a few extra items with you on your desert safari excursion. If you want to see exotic wildlife, flora and fauna, a decent set of binoculars might be quite helpful. Lip balm, a lightweight bag to hold water, medications, food and other necessities, and a deodorant to help you keep fresh throughout your safari.

What You Should Completely Avoid in your Outfit?

As you look forward to this thrilling desert expedition, you should also note what you should completely avoid in your outfit. Thereby, ensuring that your delightful desert journey goes off without a hiccup in terms of outfit.

Synthetic and Tight-Fitted Clothing

Avoid using synthetic and tight-fitted clothing during your desert safari journey. The flexibility and breathability factor of your outfit is very important when moving through the harsh desert terrain. Tight-fitted clothes retain and trap the sweat, and expose your skin to heat, which can eventually lead to extreme heat-related issues.

Dark Coloured Outfit

Dark colours absorb more heat, eventually heating your body in many ways. When you are in the middle of the hot sun’s rays and the harsh desert terrain, you need your body to stay cool so that your body temperature remains regulated.

Heavy Accessories or Fancy Jewellery

If you have a habit of wearing heavy accessories or fancy jewellery, we recommend leaving them at your hotel. Accessories or jewellery are quite delicate, and considering the ups and downs you will face in your desert journey, avoid them as much as possible. Accessories or jewellery can be easily damaged or lost in the rough sandy environment. You also do not want to garner unnecessary attention in an unknown desert territory. Your safety and comfort should be of paramount importance than your style statements.

Tips for Desert Safety

While your outfit is a crucial part of your desert safari preparations, there are other considerations to keep in mind for a safe and enjoyable experience:

Inform Others:  Let someone know your plans and expected return time before heading into the desert. In case of emergencies, this information is invaluable.

Tools for Navigation:  To help you navigate the desert environment and prevent getting lost, carry a map, compass, or GPS device.

First Aid Kit:  Carry a well-stocked first-aid kit with essentials like bandages, antiseptic wipes, pain relievers, and personal medications that you may need.

Respect Local Regulations:  Ensure you know and adhere to any rules or permits required for desert exploration in your chosen location.

Staying hydrated:  Desert environments can leave you dehydrated due to the high temperatures and dry air. Staying hydrated is essential to ensure your safety and comfort during a desert safari. Consider bringing electrolyte tablets or powder to add to your water. They can help replenish lost minerals through sweat.

Conclusion –

The desert safari is one of the most spectacular ways to explore the diverse desert landscape in Dubai. When planning this impeccable desert adventure, following the appropriate attire and quick hacks will be handy during your trip. When choosing specific clothing brands for your desert safari outfit, it is essential to look for those that prioritize quality, functionality, and durability. When going on a desert safari in Dubai, follow the appropriate dress code, enjoy the overall experience, and take back unforgettable moments from your journey.
