** JUST ANNOUNCED 8/16/22 – ME nd Adam has been added as the opener!

Support is Johnny Marr

The Killers will release their seventh studio album, entitled Pressure Machine , on Island Records on August 13, 2021 .  The album was co-produced by the band, Shawn Everett , and Jonathan Rado (of Foxygen), all of whom worked together on The Killers’ critically-acclaimed album Imploding The Mirage , released last year.

When the Covid-19 pandemic shut down the promotional run and worldwide tour for The Killers’ majestic, critically-acclaimed 2020 album Imploding the Mirage , “everything came to this grinding halt,” says frontman Brandon Flowers . “And it was the first time in a long time for me that I was faced with silence.  And out of that silence this record began to bloom, full of songs that would have otherwise been too quiet and drowned out by the noise of typical Killers records.”  Indeed, for the first time since 2004, the relentless momentum and pressures of being in a globally-renowned, stadium-shaking band stopped.  Enter Pressure Machine : a view into the everyday realities of a small American town with a stark, tough beauty, and The Killers’ most restrained and resonant album yet.

The Killers will be heading back to the road to celebrate both Pressure Machine and Imploding The Mirage , along with their much-loved catalogue of global hits, in 2022.  Tickets for these shows go on sale on Friday, July 23rd, at 10 am local time via the band’s website.

The Killers have announced they will be heading back on the road with a stop at Little Caesars Arena on Saturday, October 8, 2022 at 7:30 p.m. to celebrate their Pressure Machine and Imploding The Mirage albums, along with their much-loved catalogue of global hits.

The Killers will release their seventh studio album, entitled Pressure Machine, on Island Records on August 13, 2021.  The album was co-produced by the band, Shawn Everett, and Jonathan Rado (of Foxygen), all of whom worked together on The Killers’ critically-acclaimed album Imploding The Mirage, released last year.

When the Covid-19 pandemic shut down the promotional run and worldwide tour for The Killers’ majestic, critically-acclaimed 2020 album Imploding the Mirage, “everything came to this grinding halt,” says frontman Brandon Flowers. Enter Pressure Machine: a view into the everyday realities of a small American town with a stark, tough beauty, and The Killers’ most restrained and resonant album yet.

A video from Brandon about Pressure Machine can be seen now via Apple Music.

A quieter, character-study-driven album, Pressure Machine lives squarely in Flowers’ hometown of Nephi, Utah, a close-knit community of 5300 people with no traffic lights, a rubber plant, wheat fields, and the West Hills.  Nephi is the place Flowers spent his formative years (10-16), saying “had it not been for advancements in the automotive industry, Nephi in the 90s could have been the 1950s.”  The album’s songs are based on the memories and stories of people that impacted him growing up, interspersed with commentary from current Nephi locals about their town.  “We were discussing [Brandon] moving to Nephi as a kid and being stuck in the middle of nowhere,” says the band’s drummer Ronnie Vannucci Jr. “And during Covid-19, it started to feel like we were all in the middle of nowhere.”  Concurs Flowers, “I discovered this grief that I hadn’t dealt with,” he says, “many memories of my time in Nephi are tender.  But the ones tied to fear or great sadness were emotionally charged.  I’ve got more understanding now than when we started the band, and hopefully I was able to do justice to these stories and these lives in this little town that I grew up in.”

The resulting record is an aural document of growing up - and living - in the American Southwest, told from a myriad of perspectives.  For the first time in his life, Flowers had complete lyrics before a note of music was put to tape.  No stranger to inhabiting different characters in songs, on Pressure Machine he steps into the shoes of some of the people whose lives he watched unfold as a teen.  The album weaves the threads of Flowers’ signature lyricism throughout his career into a perfect whole culminating in the most elegant album The Killers have ever made.

Through its characters and also its title, the album squares up to the unbending pressure of the American dream compounded by religious disenchantment.  A born optimist, moments of beauty inevitably shine out of the grief of Flowers's songs:  the healing arrival of summer, the first crop of hay, sweeter skies.  Pressure Machine’s stories detail the real life personal battles, overwhelming regrets, local tragedies, and the opioid epidemic that hit Flowers’ hometown, as well as every hometown in America.  Flowers sings about the choices people make, for better and for worse, and the consequences of those choices; the ones who were left behind, and the ones that can’t be forgotten.

Pressure Machine’s album cover image was shot on the highway just outside Nephi, taken as photographer Wes Johnson passed a roadside inspirational display set up by a local Baptist church.  Johnson took dozens of incredible images of Flowers’ hometown throughout the early part of 2021, many of which are featured in the album’s packaging for the physical edition.

Recent tour reviews

It was amazing!!! From the moment they went on stage to the very last second it was just so much positive energy coming from the band. The crowd was bad, but that isn’t The Killers’ fault! They did the absolute most and it paid off. Brandon hit those high notes despite his flu, Ronnie was legendary on the drums, Ted was amazing, the choir was amazing, et cetera et cetera. It’s a shame (especially for the people that DID know all their songs) that the crowd bothered them so much that they didn’t play Mr. Brightside, but again, the band isn’t to blame.

These Las Vegas legends know how to give a great performance!

This was, so far, the best concert for The Killers that I've ever seen (& I've seen them 3 times already). The acoustics for the Staples Center wasn't the absolute best, but it didn't matter when the whole stadium was singing at the top of their lungs along with the band. First of all, since this was the Wonderful Wonderful Tour, I thought the band would play mostly songs from the new album, but to my surprise, they performed a great mix of songs from their entire discography. What surprised me the most was that The Killers played a ton more songs from their Hot Fuss album than they ever had before. They even dug deep to perform such notable songs like "Andy, You're A Star" & "Smile Like You Mean It". A beautifully sweet touch was when the band performed a new, sort of spur-of-the-moment, song about Los Angeles...a song they had written on the road just before their L.A. leg of the tour. One of the major highlights of the entire concert was when the band had invited a young teenage fan up onto the stage to play the drums on the song "For Reasons Unknown". Apparently this has become an ongoing tradition of the band, to invite fans up on the stage to perform with them. This was such a touching, yet totally bad-ass moment, & I hope The Killers keep on doing this at every concert tour from now on. By the end of the concert, my friends & I had lost our voices from singing & screaming so loudly, but it was one thousand percent worth it. The Killers proved with their electrifying & humorous stage presence, along with their amazing voices & talent, that they will forever hold the spot of being my all-time favorite band.

I actually saw the show at Barclays on Tuesday the 8th. Let me start by saying I see a lot of concerts every year and was only familiar with the better known of The Killers songs. Having said that - they were EXCELLENT! Flowers is a magnificent front man with a set of pipes to carry stadiums. The band is flawless and so rock and roll. I will judge a band by how much they can hook me with a song I’ve never heard before . From the opening with Wonderful Wonderful and The Man thru The Calling start to the encore I was dazzled. I downloaded everything and I’m now a confirmed fan. I will see them again ASAP. One of the best live I have seen -ever. And I’m no spring chicken.

John Hynes Q&A: Wild coach on what he’s learned and what needs to change for next season

Mar 7, 2024; Tempe, Arizona, USA; Minnesota Wild head coach John Hynes looks on in the first period against the Arizona Coyotes at Mullett Arena. Mandatory Credit: Matt Kartozian-USA TODAY Sports

LOS ANGELES — Relaxed during an off day on his final road trip of his first season of what he hopes is many in Minnesota, John Hynes talked excitedly about the Wild’s future and looked back on an injury-riddled season where the Wild simply couldn’t get over the hump.

Every time they were about to make traction, a significant player was injured. Every time they were about to place themselves back into playoff contention or actually inside the playoff bubble, they couldn’t win the big game.

And we’ve all seen the reality of how spending nearly $15 million less than other teams impacts a lineup if you’re riddled with lost bodies.

It’s really glaring when it comes to overall depth and secondary scoring, and it ultimately puts too much stress on the top guys.

But despite the fact that Hynes knows the Wild will face similar complications next season with a final year of $14.7 million in dead money, he’s not heading into this offseason thinking, “What did I get myself into?”

He’s glad he came when he did because he feels he has a great understanding of the team now heading into this important offseason. He has a boatload of information now to prepare for next season and feels he can go into exit meetings with president of hockey operations and general manager Bill Guerin after Thursday’s finale with Seattle with ultimate authority to laud some guys and have pointed conversations with others.

Hynes sat down with The Athletic for a Q&A looking back at his first season in Minnesota and what he expects going forward:

You’ve told me you’re glad you got here midseason as opposed to the offseason because now you’ve got a good handle of the team. How beneficial will that be in these upcoming exit meetings?

You’ve been able to come in and implement some things with the team that you want to do. There’s much more to be done. I think with training camp, but also really seeing the dynamic of the team, the individuals, where now you’ve been through enough and you say, “OK, we fell short. What are the things that are controllable from now ‘til training camp?” Individual meetings, individual expectations, communication with players in the summer, I think all that is really important moving forward. It doesn’t just start in training camp now. We fell short and if our performance is going to improve, it’s not, “Everything’s OK this summer.” We’ve got to work as coaches and figure out what we’re going to do. But I think that there’s certainly some things from the player standpoint that need to be and should be communicated and followed through with during summer. And it will be. Whether it’s fitness, attitude, whatever, some guys need that talk.

How important is it next camp that certain players know nothing will be given? It feels some guys have been given top-six jobs almost by default.

Well, it has to be a clean slate because obviously what happened wasn’t good enough. Whether that was players playing in certain roles — whether it was earned or by default or by injuries — it wasn’t good enough. I will tell certain players that things have to be earned and much more competitive. To have a competitive training camp and how you practice, how you play, ice time, special teams, it’s got to be performance-based, but you also need to have more players on the team to make it competitive, too, where we were devastated with injuries and sometimes, it took its toll.

Obviously, out-of-work coaches want to work and jump at that first opportunity. Do you think you realized in November what the reality of $14.7 million below the cap actually could mean? And does that concern you going into next year, where you have the same dead money and will again be banking on incredibly good health because you again may not have the quality depth to replace injured players?

You do realize that when you’re coming in, and you do realize being in the league long enough that that’s a lot of money that you’re out. But with that being said, with all the injuries we had this year and probably some underperformances from some people, we pushed it pretty hard. So it excites me for the challenge, but also knowing that it’s on us to find a way to be a better hockey team, more successful hockey team next year. And that’s with the cap space. We need players to be better. We need our depth players to be better. We need a younger player or two from Iowa, a prospect, to make his case to be impactful. That could be internal improvement here, but maybe we need some depth in Iowa built up a little bit. But we have to come to grips with this reality, and the big thing is find ways to get more out of some guys on our team. And that excites me.

Fair to say you’re talking about guys like Marcus Johansson and Freddy Gaudreau when you say “underperformances?”

Yeah. Those guys are good players. They’ve been impactful guys at different points with us but certainly have got to find a way to do it more consistently. They have to find a way. We need more from them and many others on the team. They’re not alone. Us, as coaches, have to help them be more productive consistently throughout the year. If we can do that, our team’s probably going to be better than it was this year.

You were 0-10-1 this season against Dallas , Colorado and Winnipeg . You’ve won eight of 30 games against the top-nine teams in the conference. The other day, you were asked about those struggles and you pointed out how deep they are, how much bigger they are, faster, all that stuff. To be frank, that’s a lot of deficiencies then, regarding your own team. Does it concern you that these teams are going nowhere and you’re largely locked into this same roster next season? You’re not going to magically become bigger, faster and more dynamic.

Well, I think that there’s been some games, we have been very competitive against them, but you’re losing in a shootout, you’re losing some of those games tightly barring a (Nathan) MacKinnon doing what he did to us the other night. But I think there’s more attention to detail in our game that can be better. And I think it’s really a combination. Our penalty kill needs to be better. I think our goaltending needs to be more consistent. And then I think if we can get more consistency throughout our lineup, I still think we’re going to be a very competitive team. This year, we didn’t have it enough and particularly didn’t have it against those teams.

Speaking of goaltending, SportLogiq took your expected standings points pace based on expected goal differential versus your actual pace the other day and said you should have 101 points. The gist was to demonstrate the impact of goaltending. Both Filip Gustavsson and Marc-Andre Fleury have had tough years, particularly on the penalty kill. If both are back, how do they or you become better? And to be blunt, you’ve been candid about your displeasure with Gustavsson’s practice habits. Do you have to read him the riot act and say, “Look, what you were this year is not acceptable”?

Yeah, I think both guys are competitive and both of them have talent. Both of them have shown at times throughout the year, they’ve been very, very good. But some of it is probably deeper than reading the riot act. It’s more: How can we get off to a good start with our goaltending? What’s the summer routine? Does something need to change? If Fleury’s back, extremely competitive, gifted goalie as we all know, but now as he’s continuing to play longer and longer, are there certain things he can do and we can do to help him be prepared for the season? And same thing with Gus, because you’re right, he must be better. For me, it’s one of the benefits of being here and seeing that we’ve implemented a certain style of play from a defensive perspective. A lot of the numbers are very good compared to the league. That says our goaltending needs to be better.

the killers tour dallas

Your penalty kill has struggled all season. It’s killed you. Not just goaltending on the PK, but the players in front of them, guys who should be solid penalty killers. Do you think a full training camp with you at the helm will help you hammer home details and fundamentals that will lead to necessary improvement?

One hundred percent. Usually the best penalty kills, you can implement more in training camp and drill it in. And you’re making tweaks and sometimes adjustments, and it doesn’t cost you in the preseason games. It does give you time to hammer that in. But I also think there needs to be more of a penalty-kill unit ownership. These guys need to take pride in being the best penalty killers they can be. That’s something that we’ll certainly dive into this offseason. As coaches, a major part of our offseason will be to continue to look at, study, tweak, the personnel versus how you play and things like that. It’s tough to sometimes change it on the fly. Even, I remember, Colorado a couple of years ago, they were changing (their kill). … They’re pressuring them, they’re in diamond and they’re pressuring. It’s something I believe you can really hammer home if you spend the time on it during training camp. And this summer, as coaches, we’re going to divide up the playoff teams and really study how they do things and really set the table the rest of the summer of what we’ll implement in camp.

Secondary scoring has been a huge problem. Your unbelievable lack of depth scoring on your third and fourth lines became very apparent in the second half because Mats Zuccarello (no goals in his past 20 games), Marco Rossi (four goals in his past 25) and Joel Eriksson Ek (two goals in his past 20) completely dried up. How does that improve so Kirill Kaprizov (44 goals, 93 points) doesn’t again feel the brunt of all the pressure that if he’s not scoring, you guys aren’t winning?

It was a problem. Is it the depth in your lineup? Is it that these guys aren’t committed enough in the hard areas? Is it skill? I think there’s a lot of things. But it does become challenging when you have to go through almost every game where you need Kirill or Zuccy or Ek or (Matt) Boldy to score every night. These guys on the third and fourth line must score. A lot of games are 2-1, 3-2, where if you can get some scoring spread up and down your lineup, it also invigorates the team. This summer, if guys are to improve, they’ve got to work on skill work, shooting, whatever it might be, whether it’s getting more explosive, tipping pucks — all these little things you can work on over the summer that you’re not in the corners battling, but you’re improving your skill sets in little things that make a big difference. And then we’ll evaluate. As management, coaches, we will go over the depth in our lineup as far as what we can do, what we should do and the style of players we need.

How much appreciation do you have for Kaprizov’s talent, leadership and ownership of this team, especially in the second half where he had the largest jump in points in the NHL from first half to second?

As you said, the talent, the competitiveness, the ability to drive a team, the way that he practices, his interactions with you as a coach, his feedback — he’s as good a person as he is a player. And to me, that’s really encouraging, … He’s still young and even in his development and career, and he’s special. He’s a special player.

the killers tour dallas

Same with Eriksson Ek, I assume?

Love Ek. Love him. Like Kirill, a unique player, unique person. It’s very rare you can find a 6-foot-2, 6-3 center that can play every situation, that can skate, that has the stamina and the fitness level that he has. And the way that he plays night in and night out, that’s hard to find.

Boldy has 28 goals and caught fire with 27 of them coming under you after a very slow start. What does he have to do to become a true star?

Boldy is really growing. I think the next step is really understanding how much of a force he can be if there’s a power game to him. When he plays the game more direct and with power, his skill comes out. He has the ability to make skill plays, but for him to continue to be on track, to be a dominant player, to be dominant in the playoffs, where from I understand he has not been, I think that with his power game, playing a big power forward combined with his skills, he could be a real force to be reckoned with.

We know what you think of Brock Faber and the specialness to him. What’s your impression so far of other young guys: Marat Khusnutdinov , Declan Chisholm , Marco Rossi, Liam Ohgren ?

If you start with Chisholm, he didn’t play a lot of hockey (in Winnipeg). I see a player that’s a very good skater. He’s got good size. As a defenseman, he can handle confrontational situations as a D. I certainly see his skill set offensively, but I think he needs to continue with reps and experience, maturity in his game, understanding when’s the right time to make plays and not make plays when sometimes you’ve just got to keep it simple or when there’s going to be a play to be made. I’m encouraged by him. I think experience and coaching and working with him, there’s upside there. Marco, I think if you look where he’s come from last year, not really playing in the NHL to really his first NHL season, the point production that he’s had, he’s been really forged into a pretty significant role night in and night out. So I think that’s encouraging with experience with him. And then with Khusnutdinov, I think you see parts of what he is. He can be competitive in the faceoff circles, brings a penalty kill element, adds some good speed and pace. But I think he’s really learning and it’s tough to say now what he’s really going to be because I think that there’s been such a big adjustment for him. And you see signs, but there’s not consistency in any one area where, “OK, he’s got it.” But I think there needs to be more time. And I really like what I see from Ohgren. First of all, he’s jacked. He can skate. Very smart. I see the skill, the two-way game. I can’t wait to see these guys in training camp, especially Liam.

Guys like Faber, even Jake Middleton , Eriksson Ek, because of the injuries and lack of depth, you’ve asked a lot of them this year. Johnasson and Gaudreau have gotten top-six, top-nine roles out of default. If you can improve your depth this summer, how much better could that be for the entire team? Because it feels like guys like Faber, Ek and Rossi have hit a wall.

Yep. Some of that, to be honest, it’s a reality. You’ve lost Jared Spurgeon , who plays significant minutes for basically the whole season. Foligno’s been hurt. You’ve lost Jonas Brodin for significant time this year. The guys you mentioned really did a good job. We battled and battled and battled. But, yes, I think that sometimes when you can have guys play in the roles that they should be in or what their real skill sets are, sometimes that can help them. But the good thing is as I think you’ve seen that if called upon, these guys can do it.

Lastly, what’s this whole year been like for you? I think all of us take for granted that you came here in November without your family and have been living in a hotel for five straight months, whether home or road. Is part of you like, “All right, let’s wrap this up. Get me back to Nashville now and let’s start this over next year?”

One, it’s been great because I really enjoy the team. I really enjoy the organization from a work perspective. Certainly disappointed that we couldn’t push it further. But the players, the people, the coaches, it’s been great to be able to come in and work and see. I’m really excited about the offseason because I feel like I have a really good feel of the team and the players and what things you need to change right away. And have time now to I think even digest some of that more and then start getting ready for next year. From a family perspective, it gets difficult at times because you want to be there, you want to see your family, you want to be there more. But to be honest, my kids, my wife, are great. Today with FaceTime and calls and texting, you’re still in communication with your family all the time. The relationships are still there. But I’m certainly looking forward to, at the end of it, to be able to get home, spend time with them in the summer. And from a coaching perspective, I usually divide it up a bit where we’ll get our playbook stuff that we feel like we want to continue on next year done with the coaches. And then we’ll have different assignments, certain teams to watch in the playoffs. Study some certain areas, penalty kill, do some different projects, talk to people, reconvene at the development camp, let’s present where we want to go. And then from there, a few more assignments to the end of August, meet again at the end of August and, OK, preparation, finalize the tactical things or whatever it might be. And then get ready for camp. I’m excited for next year. We’ll be better.
