Ultimate travel guide to the perhentian islands.

Ultimate Travel Guide to the Perhentian Islands in Malaysia

By the time I reached the tropical Perhentian Islands off Malaysia’s east coast I’d be travelling non-stop in Southeast Asia for over 2 months.

And I was exhausted.

I was especially exhausted of the noisy cities, hectic pollution and piles of trash.

And so it was that the beautiful paradise pearls of the Perhentian Islands came just in time!

After 5 days of doing next to nothing on these tiny drops in the ocean, except lying in the sun and hanging out, I felt fully rested and ready to face the road again!

So if you’re looking for a Southeast Asia retreat too (or some epic snorkelling / diving for that matter), then let me recommend Malaysia’s Perhentian Islands… you won’t regret it!

Why Visit the Perhentian Islands?

Malaysia, Perhentian Islands, Ocean Views

The Perhentian Islands are 2 tiny islands lying off the east coast of Malaysia.

They are perfect for those looking for some beach-underwater-ocean-sand-sun time and make a great alternative to the overcrowded islands of Thailand.

With beautiful waters, these islands are famous as top diving or snorkelling destinations, but are also ideal for those just looking to relax on some sand for a while and read a book.

Far less visited and developed than some of Malaysia’s other islands (such as Langkawi) the Perhentian Islands provide a good (and often rare) opportunity to get off the beaten track a little in Malaysia.

Because it takes some time to get here, as well as being fairly rustic round the edges when you arrive, not a whole heap of travellers make the journey to get to this part of Malaysia… and you’ll definitely be rewarded with less traveller traffic as a result!

In fact, the vast majority of travellers I met on this island were Malaysian.

And so it seems, the Perhentian Islands are a top local pick!

The best kind of recommendation in my book!

When to Visit the Perhentian Islands?

Malaysia, Perhentian Island, Me

Deciphering the best season to visit Malaysia can be a tricky pursuit… as I found out.

Situated in the tropics. fairly close the Equator and with 2 different coasts, the weather here can be temperamental and unpredictable to say the least.

Trying to give you some parameters however, it’s generally acknowledged that there are 2 different rainy seasons in Malaysia – one for the east coast and one for the west.

It goes without saying, this is the time to avoid visiting the respective beaches!

On the west coast of Malaysia, the wet season is generally acknowledged as running between the months of May and November.

On the east coast (where the Perhentian Islands lie), it’s the reverse, with rainy season running from May to November (which is the same as much of mainland Southeast Asia).

I visited Malaysia and the Perhentian Islands in early May but have to confide the weather was all over the place.

It rained continually when I was in Penang (northwest Malaysia) but not at all when I was in Malacca (southwest Malaysia).

It was also largely dry in both Kuala Lumpur and the Cameron Highlands , but the forecast in the Perhentian Islands was continually predicting rain, even though when I got there we didn’t have a drop for 5 days!

The moral of the tale, or at least the lesson I learnt from my travels this time, was that basically you take a chance whenever you visit Malaysia and, I’m sorry to inform you, the Perhentian Islands are no different!

How to Get There?

Malaysia, Perhentian Islands, Boats

So let’s say that you have decided to visit the Perhentian Islands, despite the lack of certainty re. the weather.

Then, the next question you’ll want to know is how to get there.

Well first up, you have to get to Kuala Besat, which is the coastal mainland town nearest to the Perhentian Islands.

Buses to Kuala Besat run from across the country of Malaysia, including day buses from Cameron Highlands and night buses from Kuala Lumpur.

In fact, I arrived in Kuala Besat from Cameron Highlands on a tourist service that took all day, but only cost me 65 MYR and was a direct shuttle service.

On leaving Kuala Besut, after my time in the Perhentian Islands, I then took a night bus to Kuala Lumpur, which cost me 45 MYR.

As always in Southeast Asia, I use 12Go to book all my bus tickets as I love their easy and simple online comparison service and secure booking facilities.

And from Kuala Besut, you then need to get one of the public speed boats across to the Perhentian Islands, so it’s at this point you’ll have to decide which island you want to visit and which resort within that island you want to stay at (if you haven’t already).

The boat ride takes around 45 minutes and cost me 35 MYR.

Drivers will drop you off on the jetty of your chosen resort / beach.

It’s worth noting there is an additional Marine Park entrance fee you have to pay when you visit the Perhentian Islands.

This cost is 30 MYR and is payable at the time of boarding the boat over to the islands.

How Long to Spend in the Perhentian Islands?

Malaysia, Perhentian Island, Kecil Pier

Both of the Perhentian Islands are fairly small, fairly basic and fairly limited on their activity offerings, but this can definitely be a good thing!

Both islands are perfect for a quick weekend trip, but even better is to spend a few more days here if you really want to chill out and do not much!

Most people stay in the Perhentian Islands for around 3 nights – it’s a popular extended short trip for KL locals.

I stayed 5 nights and know many dive fanatics who stayed longer.

Which Island, Which Beach?

Malaysia, Pulau Kecil, Pier

There’s basically 2 Perhentian Islands.

The larger ‘Pulau Besar’ is slightly more upmarket and geared more towards couples and families.

The smaller island ‘Pulau Kecil’ is more centred around backpackers / groups of friends etc.

No surprise therefore, that I visited Pulau Kecil and was delighted with the choice.

Within this smaller island, which really is pretty small, there’s 2 main resorts / beaches you can choose from when it comes to deciding where you want to be based.

‘Long Beach’ is just that…. a long beach.

The sand is beautiful here and the water crystal-clear, but there’s a lot of hotels / restaurants / dive shops spread out along the length of the curved bay and things definitely feel more commercial.

‘Coral Bay’, where I stayed, is definitely way more rustic, but it’s also a lot smaller and quieter.

The beach isn’t quite as impressive here, mostly just because it’s smaller, but the water is just as nice and I loved the really low-key / barefoot sort of feel to the place.

At each beach on each island, there’s a lot of different accommodation options, from posher hotels and resorts like Ombak right through to the typical Southeast Asian huts on the sand, but generally speaking, Coral Bay has more backpacker accommodation, while Pulau Besar has more hotels.

I treated myself when I was in Coral Bay and stayed at the Ombak resort, followed by the Senja Resort.

They are probably 2 of the better accommodation options in Coral Bay, but you pay for it!

The island tax here really is something else!

What to Do There?

Malaysia, Perhentian Kecil, Sunset

Um chill out?

Yup, when it comes to things to do in the Perhentian Islands, there’s not a huge amount of choice… and that’s just the beauty of them.

Obviously I know the smaller island ‘Kecil’ better and can safely attest to the fact that the main things to do here are swim, sunbathe and smile!

There’s also some amazing snorkelling and diving to be had.

I wish I’d tried it in hindsight, but I was just so pooped when I arrived to the Perhentian, that lying on the beach was about all I could manage!

If you do want to snorkel, or better, dive when in the Perhentian Islands however, there are loads of dive shops across both islands and resorts and prices are pretty good.

You can also take scuba courses in the Perhentian Islands, with a beginners PADI Open Water Course on offer in many places.

Aside from that, you can also enjoy some walks on Pulau Kecil, largely the forest walk between Long Beach and Coral Bay, as well as to further afield on the island.

However, it is worth bearing in mind the heat and humidity here, which makes any form of exercise definitely an early morning or late afternoon pursuit!

Activities, or lack thereof, are pretty similar across Pulau Becar too!

Packing List for the Perhentian

Malaysia, Perhentian, Coral Bay

It’s all about the sweaty, sandy, salty times in the Perhentian Islands, so when it comes to knowing what you need to pack, the answer is… not much!

  • Swimwear and a beach towel are a must
  • The Tesalate sand-free towels are a super travel option
  • As are sunscreen for the day and insect repellent for the evening
  • Sandals are a given… mostly because the sand is too hot to walk on here
  • And a sunhat or cap to protect your head, face and neck from those super strong UV rays is a great idea
  • Outside of that, I think it’s fair to say I pretty much lived in my sarong when I was here and occasionally threw on a pair of shorts and a t-shirt for the evening!

If you have your own dive gear or snorkel fins / mask, you may want to bring these with you.

And a dry-bag , with a good underwater camera, like the GoPro Hero 7 , would be a top idea too.

Things to Know Before You Go!

Malaysia, Perhentian Island, Pulau Kecil

After basically saying you don’t need to pack much when you come to the Perhentian Islands, I’m sort of going to go straight ahead and undermine that, because the first thing to point out in this ‘things to know’ section is that you should bring everything you need to these islands!

Being remote and small, supplies here are seriously lacking and what is here is pricey, so make sure you come prepared with all the toiletries etc you might need.

You also need to come prepared with all the cash you might need, because there are no ATMs on this island!

That’s basically the most important thing to know.

After that. it’s just the usuals in Southeast Asia – such as not drinking the tap water, being aware of the heat and the sun, thinking before you eat stuff, staying hydrated and trying to be as conscious as possible when it comes to disposing of your trash.

When you see the sewer pipes on the Perhentian beaches however, as well as all the litter on the jungle trails, it’s hard not to become as depressed as I was in much of Southeast Asia.

Finally, again like much of Southeast Asia, bed bugs are a big problem in much of the cheaper accommodation options here on the islands… and there’s nothing you can do about it, except be vigilant.

Basically this means checking sheets and mattresses as soon as you arrive somewhere and telling managers / owners immediately in the morning if you’ve been bitten.

It also means putting all your stuff to bake in the sun afterwards to ensure you don’t carry the critters with you from one place to another.

Ultimately however, it’s hard to do much more if the managers and owners of guesthouses, along with other travellers, simply don’t care.

Personally, I was so sick of bedbugs by the time I got to the Perhentian Islands, that it was another reason fuelling my decision to stay in more expensive, private accommodation, which is honestly the best way to protect yourself from these dreaded critters!

Mini Travel Guide to Malaysia

Malaysia, Penang, Me Jettie Jumping

Malaysia has a large number of international airports across both sections of the country where regular flights arrive from other domestic destinations, as well as the Southeast Asian region.

If you’re looking at travelling to Malaysia direct from Europe, North America or Australia / New Zealand, then it’s likely you’ll arrive in Kuala Lumpur airport from where you can take domestic flights or bus rides to just about any destinations within the Malay Peninsula.

As always, I use the great website 12Go to book all my bus travel in Southeast Asia and Skyscanner to find the best flight deals

How Long to Spend There?

With a large country separated into 2 main parts, there’s a lot of travel time to be accounted for when moving around Malaysia.

Add into this mix the number of things there are to do in the country (as indicated by this lengthy list of the 21 top things) and there’s no question it’s easy to spend 2-4 weeks here… and still not see everything.

For backpackers who are adventuring the Southeast Asia region, I’d advise a least a fortnight to enjoy Malaysia, which will allow you to take in most of the Peninsular attractions.

However, for those who also want to enjoy jungle trekking, volcano climbing, multiple island hopping or seeing the orangutans, I’d allow at least 3 weeks, or better 4!

This will, of course, be dependent on the length of your trip, as well as the time of your visit, which in Malaysia is never straightforward!

To make your life easier, why not take a tour of Malaysia and let someone else do the hard work for you?!

Here’s my top Malaysia tour choices to give you some inspiration.

So despite the moan at the end, hopefully you can tell I enjoyed my time in the Perhentian Islands immensely.

Pulau Kecil, in particular, reminded me a lot of the island of Koh Rong Sanloem in Cambodia, and I was as delighted to reach here and chill the heck out in the sun for a few days.

Hi Steph Enjoyed reading about your time on Perhentian. I went in early 2001 and loved the remoteness back then. I was thinking of going back with my 3 now grown up children 16, 19 and 21 and giving them a taste of adventure. Has it been developed a lot – I hope not it was one of my favourite places when travelling south east Asia

It’s still pretty under-developed Mark – think you’d have a fab time there with your kids. Happy travels, Steph 🙂

My Complete Guide to the Perhentian Islands, The Closest Thing I’ve Ever Found to Paradise

From the moment I jumped off the beach straight on to the white clean sand of Long Beach on Perhentian Kecil I had a new favourite place in the world. The Perhentian islands, made up of Perhentian Besar (The Big Island) and Perhentian Kecil (the Small Island) are easily the closest thing to paradise I have ever found.

They are what I imagine the Thai islands used to be like thirty years ago before hyper development ruined most of them. And now I’m stuck in this conundrum where I want to tell anyone and everyone how amazing these islands are, but I also don’t want the peace, serenity and largely unexplored nature of the Perhentians to be ruined.

But I decided I had to let you guys know about this little piece of paradise just so you can have the same amazing experiences I had on the island. I spent two months living in Kuala Lumpur and during that time I made it to the Perhentian islands three times. I spent one four day weekend snorkelling and partying with a friend I had met in Europe who was also living in Malaysia, another weekend with the crew from my university program in Kuala Lumpur also snorkelling, beach bumming and partying, and then a whole week at the end of my time in Malaysia doing my PADI Open Water and PADI Advanced Diving courses.

I’m planning on writing a specific guide to diving on the Perhentian islands so this post is going to focus primarily on everything that makes the Perhentian islands so great and some practical advice on what to do, how to get there, where to stay and what to eat.

Getting to the Perhentian Islands

complete guide to perhentians islands paradise malaysia

The access point for the boats to the Perhentian islands is via the small town of Kuala Besut. From here you’ll find boats leaving from 8am until around 4pm, so if you are going to arrive earlier than that you’ll need to find accommodation in town for the night. The fare is set at 70 ringitt for the return journey. The boat journey takes about an hour depending on how many stops and drop offs your particular boat makes.

The cheapest and most backpacker friendly way to arrive in Kuala Besut is on the bus. I’ve taken the overnight bus both from Kuala Lumpur and from Penang to Kuala Besut. The fares never cost me more than 40-50 ringitt each way and the buses are pretty comfortable. I’ve also had friends get a bus from the Cameron Highlands so there are connections from all over Malaysia. Either way finding or booking bus journeys in Malaysia is super easy- head to either EasyBook or Bus Online Ticket.

The benefit of arriving by overnight bus is that if you get in early enough you can hop on the 8am boat to the Perhentians. Not only does this mean you get the full day on the island but you also avoid paying the marine conservation fee because it is too early for the office to be open.

If you prefer to fly the closest airport is Kota Bharu. It’s just over an hour from Kota Bharu airport to Kuala Besut provided there isn’t too much traffic. There is a local bus option but they are infrequent and it’s difficult to work out. The easiest way is to join a joint shuttle to the Kuala Besut pier of if there are enough of you grab a taxi. There are regular flights to Kota Bharu from Kuala Lumpur with Airasia and even flights from Penang with Firefly.

Be aware that on the way back there are only three possible times for you to get the boat- 8am, 12pm or 4pm so plan your flights and/or buses accordingly.

Where to Stay- Perhentian Kecil or Perhentian Besar?

complete guide to perhentian islands paradise malaysia

If you are a backpacker or a person that likes a bit of a party on the beach then you definitely want to be on Perhentian Kecil. I haven’t stayed anywhere else. The majority of dive shops and restaurants are located on Long Beach on Perhentian Kecil. This is also where you’ll find the beach bars and all of the night’s entertainment. The downside to this is the music can be blaring sometimes until 5am so if you book anywhere directly on Long Beach you’ll need some earplugs. The majority of the accommodation on Long Beach are basic beach huts or the basic dorms provided by the dive shops. The best dorm option directly on the beach is definitely Monkey Divers. Most of the places are also only connected to the public electricity which is usually only connected from 7pm to 9am.

A midrange option on Long Beach is Matahari Chalets. I had a great stay here the first weekend I spent on the island. In contrast by far the most luxurious and expensive place on the beach is the Bubu Long Beach Resort. Expect huge beds, constant electricity, hot showers and all round luxury.

complete guide to perhentians islands paradise malaysia

A good compromise for Perhentian Kecil is to stay on Coral Bay or on the way to Coral Bay. Coral Bay is about a ten to fifteen minute walk from Long Beach so you avoid the noise of the partying if you want to have an early night, but the nightlife is only a walk away. The second time I visited the Perhentian islands I stayed at Tropicana Inn which is about a five minute walk from Long Beach on the route to Coral Bay. It’s further enough away to avoid the noise of the beach but not a very far walk at all. They have a relatively affordable dorm for 40 ringgit a night and have the benefit of a generator and thus 24/7 electricity.

The bigger island tends to be home to only a handful of resorts that cater more to honeymooners or families. So if that’s your vibe it might be a good idea to head over there.

What to Do in the Perhentian Islands

Incredible snorkelling.

complete guide to perhentians islands paradise malaysia

A snorkelling trip is a popular and affordable activity on the islands. In fact the Perhentians is home to some of the best and most beautiful snorkelling I have ever done. If you’re alone and in a small group you can join one of the group boats, or if you’ve got a bit of a crowd you can basically charter your own boat. Either way these trips are easily booked and joined from any of the places along the beach. They’re often connected to dive schools and from my experience the price is usually the same.

I recommend the full day or big tour. It includes four snorkelling stops; a bay where you might be able to spot a sole lonely sea turtle who I suspiciously believe is fed and cared for by the locals, a shallow reef where you’ll find amazing coral and fish, shark bay where you might be lucky enough to spot black tipped or white tipped reef sharks, and finally a coral garden where you’ll spot some of the most beautiful and colourful coral I have ever seen. Before Coral Garden you’ll also stop in the main part of town- The Fisherman’s Village- on Perhentian Kecil. Many locals live here and there is even a mosque so make sure to bring some clothes to cover up for the lunch stop. There are a few local restaurants selling cheap and delicious local food.

complete guide to perhentians islands paradise malaysia

The Perhentian islands is one of the cheapest places to get your diving accreditation in the world. I paid $420 USD to complete both my PADI Open Water and PADI Advanced Open Water course at Matahari Divers. They also threw in a week’s worth of accommodation in a basic dorm as part of the course. Look out for an upcoming post on diving in the Perhentians.

Beach Bumming on Long Beach and Coral Bay

complete guide to perhentians islands paradise malaysia

One of my favourite things to do when I’m on an island is to sit on the beach all day, alternating between going for a swim, reading a book or having a nap. This is even greater to do on any of the beaches around the Perhentian islands as the water is crystal blue and the sand is a perfect white. It’s literally postcard perfect!

But be aware of sunburn. I think it has something to do with how white the sand is but many of my friends and myself included ended up with some of the worst sunburn of our lives while on the Perhentian islands. My whole back, front and legs were so burnt that I blistered over. So make sure you are armed with a strong sunscreen, alternate between the sun and the shade and reapply often (and as soon as you get out of the water).

Watching the Sunset at Coral Bay

complete guide to perhentians islands paradise malaysia

The sunsets at Coral Bay are simply stunning and one of my favourite things to do was to head over there, grab a few beers and watch that sun come down.

I’m much more of a water than a land baby so hiking isn’t something I actually got to do while on the island. The furthest I ever walked from Long Beach was the fifteen minutes over to Coral Bay. But some of my friends recommended going hiking on the island. A popular walk is to the windmill and lookout point which is about a half an hour walk from Long Beach. You could also hike over to the Fisherman’s village for a cheap lunch, or to Rainforest Beach which is a secluded beach home to the Rainforest Camping hostel/campground.

From Coral Bay you can also hire some kayaks to paddle around the island. Some of my friends did this on a day I was way too hungover to do anything but sit on the beach. They took some snorkelling gear with them as well and stopped off at a few places to check out the reef.

travel from thailand to perhentian islands

I loved the nightlife on Long Beach in the Perhentians. The beach is home to a couple of beach bars which start to really kick off around 9-10pm. My favourite place to hang out was definitely Abba’s Bar. Owned by a funky Malaysia island guy it’s essentially a wooden self-built shack. There are a couple of benches around the shack and then some tables on the beach. The alcohol served here is close to poison but it’s cheap and once Abbas adds his special sauce and mixture it tastes pretty delicious. Abbas also loves to make his drinks ‘extra spicy’ which basically means you get about three shots for 10 ringitt. You can also buy whole bottles and mixers here and Abbas will ply you with unlimited ice to make your own drinks. If you ask nicely Abbas will even let you plug your phone into his massive speaker to pick your own tunes, although his favourite were definitely reggae mixes. By my third visit to the island Abbas and I were old friends and I was always greeted with free shots.

Next to Abbas is the main beach bar where you’ll find a DJ and a fire show. They’ve got some pretty decent cocktails but you’ll pay twice the price as Abbas (although they may be less likely to kill you). If you wander up and down the bar you’ll also find some smaller ones but the main action tends to be congregated around Abbas and the Beach Bar next door.

Where to Eat

For all the time I spent on the island I only ate at a few select places which offered affordable and delicious local Malaysian food. The main four restaurants on the islands are an array of different coloured seats and I’d recommend not eating at any of these places. They tend to have huge menus which means the food takes forever, it is mediocre and it is overpriced.

The White Tent

By far the best and cheapest place to eat on the island is the white tent located just in front of Oh La La Divers, right by the volleyball net. I can’t quite remember its name but it begins with K. They have an assortment of fruit shakes, Malaysian dishes like stir fried noodles or fried rice with seafood, squid, chicken etc, and some truly amazing roti bread. I always grabbed a lime juice and roti bread for breakfast here, and then returned for some fried noodles, fried rice or even a toasted sandwich for lunch. Nothing on the menu costs more than 7 ringitt and absolutely everything is delicious. The only catch is that it isn’t open at dinner time.

Located up the beach on the way to the pier, Awatif was my go to dinner spot while on the island. During my first two visits to the island you could pick up basic fried noodles or fried rice for less than 6 ringitt. Unfortunately prices did hike a little for my third visit to the island. But you can easily eat at this restaurant for 10-15 ringitt and absolutely everything is delicious. You’ll find great western choices along with Malaysian classics. They also had the best roti canai that I had during my whole two months in Malaysia! I’ve eaten here at least twelve times and never had a bad meal.

If you are sick of Malaysian food then you need to head to the restaurant and bar at Oh La La divers for some incredible wood fired pizza or a delicious burger. I didn’t discover this place until my last trip to the island. It’s western food in Malaysia so it’s obviously not super cheap but the pizza is incredible. It even got my pizza obsessed friend’s stamp of approval.

Ewan’s Café

Located on the way from Long Beach to Coral Bay, Ewan’s has a great range of affordable and delicious Malaysian and Western food. I particularly loved all of their seafood dishes, and their curry laksa (one of the best I had in Malaysia). Expect to pay around 10 ringitt for a meal if the prices haven’t jumped too much.

I’m Still in Love

I couldn’t get enough of the Perhentians islands when I was in Malaysia and I keep telling everyone I met to go there. Malaysia is such an underrated country in the Southeast Asia travelling and backpacking scene and places like the Perhentians islands prove it. Despite how stunning it is prices on the island remain pretty affordable, only being slightly more expensive than the island which is ridiculously cheap. I’m so happy that I’ll be returning to Malaysia in June this year, as at least another two trips to the islands are in order.

I’ll be sure to update this guide following those trips too!

Having friends working in Malaysia is an advantage, I have always thought so. If someone else has to pay for the hotel rental, I will be allowed to stay with my friend without spend any cost for accommodation. If other people only knew about Kuala Lumpur, Penang or Malacca, I was led by friends to many interesting places. The Perhentian Islands are one of those places.

And this will be my 4D3N journey on this new island to me. My friend told me that Perhentian has just been developing tourism for the past few years, even the natives know little of it. Sounds, it is attractive, right!

My journey to Perhentian is a bit arduous and with a bit of regret, if I have more time, my trip will be more complete than ever.

Perhentian islands travel guide: Some interesting things about the Perhentian Islands that you should know

The Perhentian Islands are the new islands to visitors, relatively unspoiled islands in Malaysia. Even the indigenous people are little known or set foot in this place. The seawater around Perhentian Islands is blue and cool with long and smooth white sand beaches, crystal blue water and extremely clean.

travel from thailand to perhentian islands

Perhentian islands include 2 main islands: Perhentian Besar (Big Island) and Perhentian Kecil (Small Island). Both islands have resorts or hotels, so find a place to stay here is not a problem when coming here. The thing to consider here is your travel style, this will determine where to go and what to do.

If you prefer a quiet and leisurely vacation, Big Island will be more suitable, but if you like fun and to experience many activities from morning to night, Small Island is a great choice.

When to visit?

The best time to visit Perhentian islands is from March to September every year. Actually, it also depends on the weather in each month.

The remaining time from October to February is considered the monsoon months of Perhentian Islands, a period of dangerous rough seas and our “girl” becomes picky girl for exploration. It is best that you also should not believe any travel agent which tell this is a good time to come here, LOL.

Island resort

The local people here are quite strange

  • Every few hours they carry their bags to pick up trash on the beach regardless of day or night, so the white sand beach is very clean, only sand.
  • If you cannot buy things at shop A, they will introduce you to shop B to buy. Their mean: “You should go over there to buy something more suitable, but I don’t force you to buy anything from my shop” .
  • Please bargain, you will get a pleasant price if you are eager to take a tour but can not gather enough people to team up.
  • The bars will be opened until 4am or 5 am and islanders will therefore live in certain European time zones. That means, you will go to bed at 4am, 12am get up for breakfast and 4pm go to lunch. Indeed!

Oh, there are many more strange things, but you will know when you come.

Perhentian islands guide: Before going to the Perhentian Islands, these things cannot be forgotten

Air tickets.

Buying the cheap flight tickets with the suitable flight time is always difficult because you have to search through many websites, compare the prices of these websites to choose. Fortunately now that everything is easier, you can search for and buy air tickets at Skyscanner.com or Google Flights or Kayak.com . The search results are given with many airlines, many prices, many routes to help you choose the appropriate flight.

I bought the ticket a bit late (2 weeks before the departure time), so it was a bit expensive, about $175 / round-trip for Saigon – Kuala Lumpur – Kota Bharu route. This is an automatic transit ticket type, so I don’t waste time for checking-in and checking-out at the airports.

If you buy tickets 1 or 2 months in advance, the fare will be cheaper, only about $109 – $130 / round-trip.

kuala-lumpur-international-airport-best airports in asia in 2016 by skytrax ratings

Ferry tickets

You can take a ferry from Kota Bharu to Perhentian Islands, ferry tickets can be bought online here or at the pier for about $15.16 (70 Ringit) / round-trip. The ferry runs all day from 8am to 4 pm. The ferry will return mainland from the island with 3 trips at 10am, 1pm and 4pm.

travel from thailand to perhentian islands

You need to get to the pier 10 minutes in advance. The ferry runs quite fast, so it only takes 30 minutes to reach the island. The ferry is also small, can carry about 10-12 people, so it is very shaky when rough seas. You will easily get a stomachache, so do not overeat, especially for those who is prone to seasickness.

Portable medicine bag

Traveling away from home, bringing medicine is extremely necessary because of strange food, strange weather, all kinds of things could happen.

Going to Perhentian Islands or Kota Bharu requires a such bag of pills because you will go to a remote place called “the middle of nowhere”. Everything here is still very untouched, so there are not many services for you to choose from.

Below are some certain medications you should definitely bring:

  • Antipyretics
  • Pain relievers
  • Medicines to get rid of stomach pain
  • Drugs used for Abdominal Pain
  • Drugs used to treat digestive disorders
  • Sterile gauze pads
  • Oresol (if not available, you can buy Revise or 100 to replenish electrolytes in case of severe dehydration)

Perhentian islands travel guide — Day 1: Saigon – Kuala Lumpur – Kota Bharu

Because the island is quite remote and just recently known, there is no direct flight from Saigon to Kota Bharu. I have to choose to transit in Kuala Lumpur. That’s why I spent whole Day 1 on my itinerary just for traveling.

It took me about 12 hours to fly from Saigon, transit in Kuala Lumpur and then to Kota Bharu. Get up at 8am to go to the airport and until 8:30pm I can settle down at the Airbnb I rented in Kota Bharu.

The detailed travel times are as follows:

Saigon – Kuala Lumpur (KL): It took 5 hours for traveling including check-in time to boarding.

Transit in KL airport, GATE B: Waiting time for 2 hours. The waiting spot to fly to Kota Bharu is quite “remote”, you can hardly find any cafe. If you do not want to wait too long you can go to GATE A, which has a small cafe; coffee is not very good but you can kill your time.

KL – Kota Bharu: It took 4 hours for travel including flight time and travel time to Airbnb. Traveling quite far, right?! Because the pier and the airport are about 1 hour and 15 minutes apart by road. The hotels in Kota Bharu were not good, so I chose Airbnb – quite new and clean. My Airbnb is about 10-minute drive from the pier (thanks to the owner to took me to the pier).

travel from thailand to perhentian islands

Kota Bharu is a “quiet” city where you can hardly find any people after 8pm. My Airbnb is even quieter because it is quite far from the city center, the scene is quite like a countryside. If you do not go with a large group, I recommend you should not leaving the house when it is dark. It is essential to buy more food to bring here because the restaurants are not open late, because Malaysian food is difficult to eat and because convenience store also is quite far away.

kota bharu attractions

Perhentian islands blog — Day 2: Kota Bharu – Long Beach (Perhentian Kecil)

At 8:45 am, I was at the pier in Kota Bharu to take a speed boat to the island; the boat will leave at 9am. Every 1 hour with a trip. The boat is quite cranky, so I don’t recommend you eating too full or too much in the morning to avoid to prone to seasickness.

I decided to stay a resort at Long beach in Perhentian Kecil (Small Island) beach because there are most interesting activities on the island from food, bars to scuba diving or snorkeling.

travel from thailand to perhentian islands

Aman resort is the resort I choose at the room rates of $97 (400 Ringgit) / night. The hotel is not too beautiful but with sea view, clean and tidy room – the most important thing for this trip. (You can check rates, reviews and book on Agoda.com or Booking.com for your upcoming trip to Perhentian Islands) . However, to get to Aman I have to rent a taxiboat for $2.5 (10 Ringgit) / person to go from the pier. Or I also could walk 20 minutes on the sand with my bulky luggage, of course it will be fatigue.

travel from thailand to perhentian islands

My activities on the first day were lunch, scuba diving, snorkeling, BBQ and watching fire performance.

Regarding snorkeling , scuba diving for anyone who interested in: The price for scuba diving is $49 / person (200 Ringgit). You only need to pay $17.5 / person if own a diving license.

Snorkeling in Perhentian islands

Fireshow + Bar: Fire dance will start from about 9:30pm to 11pm, this is the activity of the biggest bar on the island. You can watch and drink beer and smoke shisha. According to my friend, the price of shisha or beer here is quite OK, not expensive, about $8.7 / pot (40 Ringgit).

travel from thailand to perhentian islands

BBQ: Honestly, waiting for BBQ was so long. The restaurants on the island have the same cooking quality, so there is no need to be too picky, you should go to a restaurant with just a few customers to avoid having to wait long. A meal for 2 people is about $13 (50 Ringgit).

Perhentian islands travel guide — Day 3: Long beach – Turtle Point – Fisherman Village – Keke Bay – Kota Bharu

Most activities on the island will have tours offer by travel agents and most tours include island hopping, scuba diving, snorkeling (for 3 days 2 nights or 2 days 1 night itinerary). However since I went diving the day before, so these tours weren’t suitable at all.

After make the deal of $31.50 / 2 people (130 Ringgit), I and my friend went to visit the 4 spots mentioned above. Because the Perhentian Islands are quite wild, all spots are pristine, clean and extremely clear bule water.

travel from thailand to perhentian islands

3:30 pm, I went to the pier to get back to Kota Bharu. To be honest, this city make me feel bored because it’s so quiet. The restaurants or shops are closed at 6pm, so what can you eat or drink, even though I rented Airbnb in the city center?!

Two Sun Restaurant is my highly recommended restaurant. Food is quite good and the price is also cheap $13 / 2 people / 4 full dishes (60 Ringgit).

Perhentian islands guide — Day 4: Kota Bharu – KL – Saigon

Another long day of traveling between destinations to return to Saigon.

Kota Bharu Airport is quite bored, so there’s nothing to play or explore. The airport has only 2 departure gates. I am really a bit surprised that this small city has a huge airport.

I flew 4 routes (both go and return) with Malaysia Airlines. Honestly, I had not eaten during my flight, so I was so tired. You should buy something in advance so as not to get hungry on the plane like me because Malaysian food is quite difficult to eat.

5pm I arrived in Saigon, ended the 4D3N journey in Perhentian Islands. Actually a bit regret because there was only 1 night in the island. To fully explore, you also have to spend at least 3 days 2 nights on the island to feel its own beauty. Well, come back next time !!!

travel from thailand to perhentian islands

Summary of costs for the 4D3N journey in Perhentian Islands

  • Air tickets: $175 / round-trip
  • Hotel: Free (Sponsored by my beautiful girlfriend, awesome, LOL)
  • Meals: $45 / 2-person
  • Scuba diving: $45 / 2-person
  • Ferry tickets: $15.23 / 2-way
  • Boat tour: $29 / 2-person

This cost including eating, drinking and playing. After going, I regret a bit more that I did not buy the combo tour first. Tours on the island always including hotel cost, tour to visit around the island, the total price is only $87 / person (400 Ringit). Well, I will definitely come back again!

Your Complete Travel Guide to the Perhentian Islands in Malaysia

If you’re looking for a Malaysian island that has crystal clear blue waters, white sandy beaches and some of the best scuba diving / snorkeling, then look no further than the Perhentian islands! We have your complete travel guide to the Perhentian islands in Malaysia below.

We spent 5 days on the islands and my oh my, we loved it. We’ll be giving you all the tips and information you need to know to get your trip off to a proper start in order to enjoy your time there!

Jump Ahead To:

Understanding The Perhentian Islands

The Perhentian Islands are located off the northeast coast of Malaysia. It’s super close to the Thai border (40 km/25 mi) so it’s a popular choice for backpackers traveling overland to/from Thailand.

Something you’ll need to understand is that there are two islands that make up the Perhentian Islands.

  • Perhentian Besar: The larger of the two islands and more popular with couples and families who are looking to avoid the backpacker party scene. This island is also the more expensive option of the two.
  • Perhentian Kecil: The smaller island and very popular among budget travelers.

You can easily get between the two islands by water taxi if you want to see them both.

We also want to call out a few important items to take care of before or to just generally understand before setting foot on the islands…

  • ATMS are pretty much non-existent, so bring cash!
  • Electricity is limited so come prepared with headlamps or other forms of lighting. There is Air Con available but typically is shut off during the day.
  • Come prepared with bug repellent! Mosquitoes are VERY real here.

When to Visit The Perhentian Islands

The Perhentian Islands have a window when you can visit. They literally become unreachable once the monsoon season hits – think coppy, violent water.

The eastern monsoon hits late October/beginning of November and stay still February. This is the time frame you want to avoid.

So, when is the best time to go the Perhentians? Anytime between March – September.

If for some reason you do go to the islands during its rainy season, PLEASE understand it will be you and the locals. Sounds cool, right? Well, it’s not.

Very few shops and hotels are open, and you may have trouble finding basic amenities like food and water. Also, things will be very pricey and options are limited. Just an FYI.

How to Get to The Perhentian Islands

Bus: Wherever you are in Malaysia, catch a bus to Kuala Besut Jetty. This is the jumping off point where you’ll catch a boat to either of the two islands mentioned above. The busses in Malaysia are comfortable and well run.

Flight : Catch a flight to either Kota Bharu or Kuala Terrenganu.  Regardless of what airport you fly into, you’ll have to catch transportation to the Kuala Besut Jetty from the airport.

Admission Costs: Once at the Jetty, you’ll need to pay a 30RM ($7 USD) “marine fee” to get access to the islands. In addition to the marine fee, you’ll pay 70RM ($15 USD) , which covers your ride to the islands.

The boat ride to the Perhentian islands takes about 30-45 minutes .

To set your expectations, the boat you take is a small speed boat that they pack full. Safety isn’t their top priority (welcome to Asia), so make sure you wear the life jacket they give you.

Also, you may be approached by “captains” giving you a cheaper price on the ride. Be wary and use your own judgement as they are more than likely unlicensed boat operators.

All the shadiness aside, we ran into no issues. It was easy-peasy, and we were on Kecil island in no time!

What to Do on The Perhentian Islands

If you’re looking for fast-paced and jam-packed days of activities, you’re heading to the wrong place! There are two things you do on the Perhentian islands 1) lay on the beach and 2) swim in the ocean. Simply beautiful.

We stayed on Kecil, so we are going to give you two specific recommendations on what to do on Kecil…

1. Abba’s Bar: A makeshift beach bar that two Malay brothers built right on Long Beach. Literally, it’s built of plywood and tin. They stock their bar with coolers of beer, cheap liquor and mixers. They have a stereo that plays amazing knock off reggae music. This place, Abba’s Bar, is where you should end every day here! It’s seriously a blast and a gathering place on the island.

Abba is kind and will let you take over as DJ for the night…that is if you have good taste in music 🙂

2. Angel Divers: If you are a diver, the dive company you should dive with is Angel Divers ! If you’re not a diver, you should ABSOLUTELY get your open water certification ! Diving with Angel Divers was the CHEAPEST diving we experienced in Southeast Asia and some of the most beautiful.

Dives cost around $18 USD and it was legit. The dive shop wasn’t sketchy and the sites they took us to where fantastic! Be prepared to carry you gear across the beach to the boat though, but hey that adds to whole experience right?!

After you do these two things, go ahead and get back to laying on the beach why don’t ya! Relax and take it easy. You’re on holiday!

Where to Eat on The Perhentian Islands (Kecil)

If you stay on Kecil like we did, Long Beach is packed with beachfront cafes. You can take a walk up and down and take a pick to whatever vibe tickles your fancy for that day. A few notable cafes we enjoyed are below…

  • Chill Out Café
  • Ewan’s Cafe
  • Teratak Amelia Cafe n’ Chalet

Where to Stay on The Perhentian Islands

For The Budget Conscious: Senjay Bay Resort has little beach front bungalow, air con rooms. Perfect for the island vibe you are looking for. *TIP: You can also book on the island if you are keen to Dive. We stayed on the resort with Angel Divers. Unfortunately, a lot of Perhentian’s more budget friendly accommodations are not online for booking.

For The Luxury Inclined: Bubu Villa is smack dab on Long Beach. Cute and comfortable villas await. Your walking distance from a beautiful beach, endless cafes and a handful of dive shops.

For Something In Between: Resort Mimpi is a 4-star accommodation right on long beach. From delicious breakfast and a great beach front setup, it’s not wonder why this is one of the top accommodations on the island.

A Backpacker’s Guide To The Perhentian Islands

Planning a backpacking or budget travel trip to the Perhentian Islands !?  Well, look no further, because I’m here to help!  I’ve visited this little slice of paradise in Malaysia on numerous different occasions now, and it’s slowly become one of my favorite destinations in all of Southeast Asia! With its pristine water, delicious food, fun nightlife, and unbelievable snorkeling/scuba-diving, it’s obvious why the Perhentian Islands have become such a popular destination for backpackers in the region!

Now the Perhentian Islands are compromised of Perhentian Kecil & Perhentian Besar, but since I’m writing about the Perhentian Islands for backpackers , I will be writing entirely about  Perhentian Kecil in this backpacker travel guide (but the information will still be useful for all types travelers)

The Perhentian Islands, Malaysia

The Perhentian Islands

Perhentian Kecil: A small yet stunning island consisting of two main areas: Long Beach & Coral Bay! There is just a short and easy 10-15 minute walk between the two main areas (through the middle of the island), and there is a decent amount of budget hostels/ accommodation to choose from.  Perhentian Kecil is where you will find ALL the nightlife (hence it’s known as the Perhentian Island for backpackers)!

Perhentian Besar: The larger island that consists almost entirely of families , vacationers , honeymooners, and expensive resorts.  I’ve actually never visited Perhentian Besar before (besides just stopping there for a snorkeling day-trip), but I have heard great things about it!  I’ve just never stayed there because I thought it was for the older generation who wanted to laze around on the beach all day and have a quiet vacation.

perhentian islands

Planning a trip to the Perhentian Islands & Malaysia…?

I’d recommend purchasing the Lonely Planet Malaysia Book ! I pretty much always travel with one, and it can truly be a life-saver!  It’s filled with tons of helpful travel tips, basic itinerary ideas, day-trips, accommodation recommendations, and useful restaurant descriptions and nightlife suggestions!  You’d be surprised how much use you can get of it!

And if you’re backpacking in the area through several countries, you should definitely pick up a copy of Southeast-Asia on a Shoestring !  It’s super helpful for backpackers in the region, but I’ll admit it’s a bit bulky if you’re packing light. I traveled with one for a couple months, and then ended up leaving it at a hostel in Thailand  because I was almost done with my trip.

Perhentian Islands Map - Backpacker Travel Guide

When to Go The Perhentian Islands

The best time to visit the Perhentian Islands is during the dry season which is between March and November.

What a lot of people don’t know is that the islands are basically empty and many of the shops are fully closed during the rainy season between December – February.

If you’re planning a trip to the Perhentian Islands, please keep in mind that JULY & AUGUST are peak season months, and all the accommodation on Perhentian Islands gets booked up pretty earlier.  You’ll want to book your rooms well in advance, or else you might not have a place to sleep!

Getting to The Perhentian Islands

The only access point to the Perhentian Islands is from the Kuala Besut, Jetty !  Now, most backpackers who I’ve come across on Perhentian Kecil actually just purchased their transport options from various travel agents in the Cameron Highlands, Langkawi, Kuala Lumpur, or Penang.  I’ve always gotten here by myself, and it’s really simple!

Bus: You can purchase a ticket through a travel agent, or purchase a bus ticket online to Kuala Besut, Jetty.  The bus system works really well in Malaysia, and it’s extremely easy to travel around the country.  Since the Perhentian Islands are located up in the Northeast corner of Peninsular Malaysia, the bus will probably take awhile (but trust me, it’s well worth the trip).

Flight:   Book a ticket to either Kota Bharu (closer airport) or Kuala Terengganu.  From the airports, you will have to take a taxi to the Kuala Besut Jetty.  There are daily direct flights from Kuala Lumpur, Penang, Johor Bahru, and even Singapore!  If you’re looking solely for cheeky Malaysia weekend getaway, then I’d just book one of these flights!  The airport is still about an hour away from Kuala Besut, but it’s not that bad of a drive.

Cost:   If you get to to Kuala Besut Jetty on your own, you can book your round-trip boat tickets  for 70 MYR.  If you are lucky, you can talk them down.  I actually saw one company offering a special for 50 MYR round-trip.

One of them looks like it’s “glamping” in a tree-house / log-cabin, and there’s a couple nicer hotels.  The best part about staying with AirBNB is they give you $40 OFF YOUR FIRST BOOKING .  So everytime you create a new account, you can save tons of money!  I stay in AirBNB’s all the time, and it’s a great travel hack!

Tropicana Inn / Tivoli Backpackers

This is a combination of two places that offer both dorm beds and private chalets.  There is currently a lot of construction going on, and there will soon be a lot more available at this place.

Prices vary upon the time of the year.  During low season you can get a dorm bed for as low as 20/30 MYR per night.  During high season expect to pay 50 MYR per night!

Pros :  Air-Con, Comfortable beds, clean shower, towel provided and overall decent facilities.

Cons :  Wi-Fi only available in lobby, No Lockers, and unfriendly staff.

One of the best aspects of staying here is that is located right in the middle of the island between Coral Bay & Long Beach.

Perhentian Islands Resort

Coral Bay, Perhentian Islands

Mohsin Chalet :   Really well located on Long Beach, Mohsin Chalet is another solid budget option.  They have some basic private rooms available, but there is also one building they use as the dorm room.

Prices vary upon the time of the year.  During low season you can get a dorm bed for as low as 15/20 MYR. During high season expect to pay 35 MYR per night.  (Potentially more during a busy weekend).

The dorm  room is very  basic.  It’s a giant room with  11 bunk-beds in it.  The building is worn-down, and I nicknamed it “the dungeon”.  You’ll need insect repellant or a mosquito net, because you will get eaten alive.  The bathrooms are dirty, no wi-fi in the rooms, and lots of people.

Pros :  Very short walk to the beach, cheapest option on the Island, beautiful reception overlooking Long Beach, and friendly staff.

Cons : The dorm room cleanliness, no lockers, bugs, and overall bad facilities.

This can be a great place to meet fellow travelers, and is the cheapest place to stay.  If you are a hard-core budget backpacker, then this is where you are going to stay.

Perhentian Islands

Perhentian Kecil Scuba Dive Center Packages

If there’s one thing that the Perhentian Islands are famous for – it’s scuba diving!  The marine life found here is truly spectacular, and the snorkeling and diving options are quite endless!  If you’re already certified, you’ll enjoy budget-friendly fun dives, and will witness some unforgettable dive sites!  If you’re not certified, this is definitely one of the best places in the world to get it done!!

There are a ton of different dive centers on the Perhentian Islands, and all of them offer a bunch of different packages that can save you money on accommodation if you plan on diving.

If you already have your PADI, you can book a certain number of fun-dives + accommodation for a special price.   I don’t dive, so, unfortunately, I couldn’t take advantage of these great deals during my last visit to Perhentian Kecil.

I know people who dived with Panorama Diving though, and they really enjoyed it – so I guess I recommend them.  You could also check out these other great dive companies to compare prices:

  • Panorama Diving Perhentian Island – “Located at Pulau Perhentian Kecil – Long Beach is a family run business that caters to backpackers, travellers and holidaymakers who are looking for Fun Dives or Scuba Diving Courses together with clean, basic, affordable and low-budget rooms or dorms. We have more than 20 dive spots that are suitable for all levels of experience.  New divers can have a nice relaxing reef dive while be amazed by the brilliantly colored tropical fish and coral. Experienced divers can enjoy the freedom of spectacular reef diving, adventurous wreck diving and deep dives in an extremely idyllic and laid back setting.”
  • Ombak Divers  – “Magnificent. Awesome. Beautiful. Great. Magical…We could go on with descriptions of nature’s beauty but at times; words are just not enough and best to experience it for yourself. A place like Perhentian Island fits the bill as the getaway of sorts – transforming into a beach bum, escaping the hustle and bustle of everyday life or meeting our friends of the sea, you deserve a reward!”
  • Quiver Divers  – “Situated on majestic Perhentian Kecil, Quiver Dive Team is a multi-award winning PADI 5 Star Career Development Centre (CDC) which guarantees you great fun, great service and top-quality professional tuition throughout our extensive range of PADI courses. We’re proud of our resort and would love to see you dive with us.”
  • Turtle Bay Divers  – “The diving is as good as ever. We still have lots of turtles, stingrays, bumphead parrotfishs as well as the usual colourful reef fish on our  scuba diving trips  . We organise regular diving trips to  Redang Island .  Those trips are always fun! We now have 3 more wrecks to dive at Perhentian. Both are bigger ships (70m long or more). The first is the Sugar Wreck, an easy dive on a 3500-tonne  ship.the  second a New wreck called Police wreck ,3 boats at a depth of 18m. The third is The Secret Wreck, a more tricky dive on an old freighter down at 38m.”

Things To Do On The Perhentian Islands

The Perhentian Islands are pretty small, and there actually isn’t a whole lot of things to do.  With that being said, here are some of my top recommendations on how to spend your time exploring Perhentian Kecil!

Get PADI Certified:   With all the different dive companies, if you are looking for a great place to get certified, than this is a solid option.  The Perhentian Islands are known for having spectacular diving opportunities.  You can shop around, but all the dive centers offer 4-Day Open Water Certification packages from 950 – 1100 MYR.

Snorkeling / Island Hopping Tours:  For those who don’t have their diving certifications, the Perhentian Islands still offer some of the best snorkeling spots in Malaysia.  You’re almost guaranteed to see a couple of turtles, sharks, and beautiful fish.  The coral is beautiful, and you can’t go to the Perhentian Islands without diving or snorkeling at least once.  one of the reasons you come here is to explore the underwater life.

long beach perhentian

Beach Days:   Read books, lounge on the beach, rent a beach umbrella, go for a swim, play beach volleyball, etc.  This is definitely a “vacation” island, and it’s a great place to unwind during your travels and just simply relax.

Movie Nights:   There are several different places on the Perhentian Islands that you can chill-out at night to watch a movie.  My favorite place is at Ombak Resort.  They’ve got delicious food (although a bit expensive for a backpacker budget), and they have the best set-up.

Watch the Sunrise & Sunset:   Depending on the time of the year, the sunset might not be too great because of the monsoon clouds.  However, the Perhentian Islands can surprise you with some amazing sunsets.   Sunset – Coral Bay ….Sunrise –  Long Beach.

Best Places To Eat on Perhentian Kecil

Ewan’s Cafe: This is definitely my favorite place to eat on the island.  The food is delicious, fairly priced, and the staff are all really nice.

They also have some of the fastest wi-fi on the island.   So if you need to get online to book a flight, hotel, or plan your next destination, check out Ewan’s Cafe.

Panorama Divers Buffet Breakfast: For the small cost of 15 MYR, you get a selection of a wide variety of breakfast foods.  Roti Canai, Pancakes, Cereal, Fried Rice, Fried Noodles, Eggs, Toast, Donuts, etc.  This buffet is definitely worth the money!  You have to try it at least once.  Plus, for only 15 MYR — it’s a fantastic deal for a budget traveler.

The Local Restaurants of Long Beach:  When you walk up and down Long Beach, about right in the middle is a set of 4-5 different restaurants.  Almost all of them have identical menus, fairly priced, and are pretty great.

Chillout Cafe:  If you walk pretty far towards the end of Long Beach, you’ll find a restaurant with  a giant reggae sign that reads “Chillout Cafe”.   Eat here at least once .   At first glance, the food might seem a little pricer than other places, but it’s absolutely delicious.  I ordered a Chicken Fried Rice ( pretty standard dish), but it was one of the better CFR I had eaten in a long time.  They also have decent Roti Cani, and tasty fruit juices / smoothies.

Nightlife on Perhentian Kecil

While Perhentian Kecil is definitely not one the best party islands in South-East Asia, that doesn’t mean that you can’t have a solid night out drinking here.

It’s very easy to party here because people only really go to 2-3 different spots.

Panorama Bar:   Probably the most lively spot with a “bar” feel.  They also have AMAZING PIZZA that you should try at least once.  They are kind of expensive at 25 MYR, but worth it.

Monkey Bar:   Just across the street from Panorama bar, this is a spot to grab a drink and chill a bit.

Pirates of Perhentian:   This is where the nightly fire-show is held every night at 10:30 P.M.  Watching this every night is a lot of fun.  You can sit down on the beach, order some beers, smoke some hookah, and watch some extremely talented people play with fire.

Where to Travel After the Perhentian Islands:

The Perhentian Islands are a popular destination for backpackers in South-East Asia.  Since they are located at the top of Malaysia, it’s common that most people are either working there up through up to Thailand, or working there way down to Kuala Lumpur.

Thailand : A lot of backpackers in Southeast-Asia make their way up to Thailand after exploring the Perhentian Islands for a while.  It’s super easy to do, and you can take a train across the border, and head up to Krabi or Koh Phi Phi.

Pulau Kapas :   If you feel like you want to explore more of Malaysia’s best beaches, then catch a bus down to Pulau Kapas.  I personally think it’s the Most Beautiful Island in Malaysia.

Penang /Langkawi:  A popular decision is to head to the West coast of Malaysia and check out Penang and Langkawi.  Two amazing islands, with very different vibes.  Penang for some culture and food, Langawi for some fun in the sun and waterfall exploring.  Check out all my Langkawi Blog Posts .

Cameron Highlands / Teman Negara:   Visit and trek through the oldest rainforest in the world, with the tallest canopy walk in the world!  You can take a boat + bus combo from the Cameron Highlands to Teman Negara for 70 MYR.  Check out my Backpacker’s Guide to the Cameron Highlands.

Kuala Lumpur:   The amazing capital of Malaysia, you can’t visit this amazing country with experiencing all the Amazing Things to do in Kuala Lumpur.

Thanks for reading my Perhentian Islands Travel Guide!!

Thanks for photos of island! In what time you visited it? I’m currently in Malaysia and read about Perhentian, and all guides said that in the low season almost all shops and hostels are closed, there are no electricity and even water. Also, I listened about very strong underwater movings in low season. So, I don’t know is it good idea to go there now, in begin of the march. Do you now, is it true?

Glad ya like them Yury! I went in August sometime. You definitely don’t want to go during low season though! The first time I went was back in March though, and it wasn’t really a great time. I think you would want to wait until at least April to be honest.

Hi Jones! Thanks for your helpful guides, I’m bookmarking almost everything. We’re going to Malaysia this august, and I think that we’ll take a rest at Perenthian Kecil, too. May I ask if you suggest to book in advance or if it’s quite easy to find a place to stay when we arrive, even if it’s exactly in the middle of the high season? Something like a basic guesthouse, ’cause we’re travelling with our 2y old baby and a dorm it’s not a good choice. I don’t use to book in advance, but some guides suggest to do so. Thanks! Katia

If you’re traveling with a baby, then I would definitely recommend just booking ahead in advance. Places can book up quick during high season. Safe travels to Perhentian. It’s soo amazing. :-)

Thank You for this information I am Looking forward to these Places

Hi! I visiting Kecil this past March and had my passport, wallet, and phone stolen. There is zero police presence on the island so please please be careful with your belongings! and DONT DRINK TOO MUCH and go to the beach bar on long beach… that’s where they stalk you and snatch your bag when you’re not looking.

I really like your blog and your tips about Malaysia. I’m going there in september and i really want to go to Perhential Islands after Cameron Hightlands. Is it easy to join both place ? Do you have any tips about the transportation ?

Thank you for your help. Camille

Perhentian Islands Travel Guide

[T]hinking of hitting the beach as part of your journey around South East Asia? Of course you are!

You're probably thinking about heading to Thailand's wonderful beaches – Koh Phi Phi, made famous by the movie “The Beach” and Koh Phangan, infamous for it's full moon parties.

While Thailand's beaches are indeed wonderful, you'd be mistaken for thinking this was the best spot for sun, snorkelling and sea in the region.

Hands down, the nicest beaches I've been to in South East Asia are on the Perhentian Islands in Malaysia. If you haven't been, you're missing out on something very special. Make the effort to travel a wee bit further off the backpacker circuit and you will be greatly rewarded.

Heading to Malaysia? Book all your hostels here !

Table of Contents

Where are the Perhentian Islands? How do I get there?

When is the best time to go, where to stay where to eat, what to do, know before you go.

The Perhentians are a chain of two large islands (Besar and Kecil) about an hour off the East Coast of Malaysia. They're reasonably far north, close to the border with Thailand. The nearest major town on the mainland is Kota Bharu.

Boats to the islands leave from the pier in the small village of Kuala Besut, about 45 minutes south of Kota Bharu. Forget about ferries, these are just small speed boats.

Each big resort has their own boat to travel to and from the islands. The biggest and safest boat belongs to Tuna Bay Resort. Lifejackets are compulsory – they even have lifejackets for children. The boat trip will cost you 70 RM return.

A taxi from Kota Bharu to the pier at Kuala Besut will cost around 40 RM or book a transfer through your hotel for around 30 RM per person.

From Kuala Lumpur, pick up a cheap Air Asia flight into Kota Bharu – you can get this fare for under US$15 on promotion or catch the jungle line train to Wakaf Bharu and taxi to Kota Bharu or straight to the pier at Kuala Besut.

From Penang, it's a short propeller flight on Firefly into Kota Bharu or six hours by bus. Buses leave Penang at 9pm and 9am which means either waiting around in Kota Bharu in the wee hours of the morning or missing the last ferry onto the island and overnighting in Kota Bharu.

From Thailand, you can catch the train (or bus) from Hat Yai to the border at Sungai Kolok, a journey of around four hours. Once you cross the border into Malaysia it's about 30 minutes to Kota Bharu. A taxi should cost less than 20 RM and the bus will cost 5 RM.

Gorgeous Clear Water – Image by Flashpacker Family

The best months for visiting the Perhentians are June, July and August.

You can only visit the Perhentians between March and October. Outside of this, Monsoon season takes hold – seas are choppy and resorts and restaurants shut up shop.

Wherever you stay, plan your accommodation in advance.

It's not easy to walk from beach to beach searching for the best bungalow. The season for the Perhentians is short so, by April, many places are booked solidly for stays in June, July and August. If you've got your heart set on a particular place you'll need to lock it in early.

That said, if you're on an extended trip and want to arrive a few days earlier than you've scheduled, most places will be able to accommodate.

The accommodation across the Perhentians is expensive and the standards are pretty low. Frankly, you don't get a lot for your money. You'll pay roughly twice what you would for an equivalent bungalow on one of Thailand's islands.

The expensive is worth it because it does keep the islands relatively quiet. Make sure you factor this spike into your long-term budget. There's not a lot to do on the islands so your other costs will be pretty low.

Backpackers will want to head for Perhentian Kecil.

Accommodation here is cheaper and attracts a younger crowd. The local village is on Kecil which means access to shops and a row of cheap food stalls.

There are a few bars on Long Beach though alcohol is expensive. All the budget accommodation is on Long Beach. You'll find most of them are simple, wooden chalets without AC. Some have 24-hour electricity and others don't.

Matahari Chalets and Panorama Chalets get good reviews from backpackers looking for a more lively environment. For quieter but still cheap accommodation, head back off the beach to Bintang Chalets

Flashpackers, mid-range travellers or families should look for accommodation on Perhentian Besar.

Abdul's Chalet, simple A-frame beachfront chalets with AC, and Coco-Huts, AC chalets up on the rocks, both come widely recommended. The best choice by far is Tuna Bay Resort which has rows of adjoined bungalows on the beach and in the garden.

When it comes to eating for best option is Coco-Huts or Coral View Resort. The food at Abdul's is cheap but notoriously bad and Tuna Bay is pretty pricey although there western options are good.

Taxi Boat Between the Perhentian Islands – Image by Flashpacker Family

Snorkel and dive.

One of the best things about the Perhentians is the ability to snorkel right off the beach. Reefs wrap around the island, close to the shore and teem with fish. You may even get lucky and see turtles.

Resorts will rent you a snorkel and mask for 5 RM a day. Fins aren't allowed because of the coral. You can also do a half day snorkelling trip to Rawa Island or a full day to Redang. All the larger resorts offer dive courses, including night dives.

Explore the island.

Visit different beaches and resorts by using the taxi boats parked up on every beach. Fares are per person, not per boat so, even if you're on your own, it's a good option. Concrete stairs and tracks connect some beaches.

The jungle is thick so stick to the paths and wear mosquito repellent.

Rest, relax and recharge your batteries.

There is little else to tempt you on these islands so take the opportunity to chill out with a book or iPod and work on your tan.

  • You'll pay a 5 RM National Park fee before reaching the islands, when you book your boat ticket in Kuala Besut.
  • Wifi can be slow and patchy on the islands. This can actually be a blessing. Plan for a few technology-free days and make the most of your surroundings.
  • Bring supplies with you from the mainland. Drinks, snacks and toiletries are for sale in small shops on the beach and in the local village on Kecil but prices are high and selection is limited.
  • Most of the locals on the islands are Muslim. You'll only find alcohol for sale at selected resorts. Bring your own from the mainland or, even better, bring it across the border from Thailand.
  • Beware of sea lice bites! These miscroscopic jellyfish larvae can be present in the water if you're on the islands in shoulder season. They feel like little stings or electric shocks while you're in the water and can leave a nasty rash. Take some antihistamines (oral and topical) and be sure to wash and dry your swimsuit if you do get bitten.
  • Listen out for the Islamic call to prayer. It's broadcast from the mosque in the village on Kecil but can be heard on both islands. It adds a certain exotic-ness to your Perhentian Islands experience!

Perhentian Islands, Malaysia: A Complete Travel Guide

travel from thailand to perhentian islands

Malaysia’s Tropical Getaway

I went on a three-week trip to Malaysia this summer, and the memories still vividly dance in my mind. Among the destinations that enchanted me, the Perhentian Islands stood out as an undeniable highlight — and to top it off, I celebrated my 30th birthday there! Tucked away off the northeastern coast of Malaysia, the Perhentian Islands are a tropical oasis, characterized by their crystalline waters, untouched beaches, and diverse marine life. If you find yourself daydreaming about the best things to do in the Perhentian Islands, mulling over where to stay, or are yearning for a genuine connection with the unparalleled beauty of nature, look no further. This Perhentian Islands travel guide is your personalized map to an island escapade you won’t soon forget.

Kecil or Besar Perhentian Island? Which to Choose

First things first, which Perhentian Island should you stay in? Perhentian consists of two prominent islands: the larger Besar and its smaller sibling, Kecil. Although Kecil is dubbed the ‘smaller’ island, it isn’t significantly tinier than Besar. However, what sets Kecil apart is its night vibe, reminiscent of beach parties with fire shows, all set against the rhythmic sound of waves – no lavish discotheques, just the pure essence of a beach soiree. The islands, albeit popular among tourists, have preserved their pristine charm, devoid of high-rise resorts. Instead, the Perhentians offer an escape to connect with nature, tranquil beaches, and the delightful camaraderie of locals and fellow travelers. Personally, I stayed at Kecil Perhentian Island and if you’re a couple or a group of friends, I recommend to do the same. From what I heard, Besar has more resorts but it’s quieter and best for families.

How to Get to the Perhentian Islands

Malaysia has 13 states and three federal territories, and the Perhentian Islands are a part of the Terengganu state, situated off the northeastern coast of Peninsular Malaysia. These islands are nestled in the South China Sea and are surrounded by crystal clear waters and diverse marine life. The islands are in close proximity to the town of Kuala Besut on the mainland, which serves as the main departure point for boats heading to the islands.

It’s important for travelers to note that outside of major cities like KL, Penang, and Kuching, much of Malaysia, including Terengganu, is less developed. Terengganu, in particular, offers a vastly different ambiance and pace than the bustling cities and might feel like an entirely different country. While the islands are a paradise for many, the mainland, especially around the Kuala Besut area, won’t probably appeal travelers, and I wouldn’t recommend staying an extra day there. Here’s how to get to Perhentian islands from Kuala Lumpur and Penang:

From Kuala Lumpur

  • By Air : The most efficient way from Kuala Lumpur (KL) is to fly directly to Kota Bharu Airport. Malaysia Airlines and AirAsia both offer daily flights, with the journey typically taking around an hour. Once at Kota Bharu, you’ll need to arrange a taxi or shuttle service to Kuala Besut jetty, which is about an hour’s drive away. Flight prices can range from MYR 90 to MYR 300 depending on the season and how far in advance you book. You could also opt to flying to Redang airport and then organizing a private boat tour, that will allow you to skip the shuttle.
  • By Bus : For those on a tighter budget, buses are available from Kuala Lumpur’s Terminal Bersepadu Selatan (TBS) to Kuala Besut. The journey can take anywhere from 7 to 9 hours. While it’s a longer and less comfortable option, it is cheaper, with prices typically ranging from MYR 40 to MYR 70. Once you arrive in Kuala Besut, you can catch a boat to the islands.

From Penang

  • By Air : You can catch a direct flight from Penang to Kota Bharu, which takes just over an hour. Both Malaysia Airlines and AirAsia offer this route. From Kota Bharu Airport, continue as mentioned above to reach Kuala Besut jetty.
  • By Bus : Buses from Penang to Kuala Besut are also available, although the journey is quite lengthy, often taking up to 8 hours or more. Once in Kuala Besut, you can then take a boat to Perhentian.

Boat Transfers to the Perhentian Islands

After reaching the mainland, travelers have two main options for boat transport to the Perhentian Islands – public or private.

Public Boat:

  • Operational Hours : The public boat service operates daily from Kuala Besut Jetty, departing between 8am to 5pm. Return boats from the Perhentian Islands to Kuala Besut are available between 8am and 4pm.
  • Duration and Stops : Typically, the journey to the Perhentian Islands takes about 45 minutes. These boats often make multiple stops at various beaches on both Perhentian Besar and Perhentian Kecil, based on passengers’ accommodation locations. Make sure to communicate your specific drop-off point to the boat operator upon boarding.
  • Pricing : A round-trip boat ride is priced at 70RM (€14). Be mindful of the luggage allowance which is set at 15 kg per person. Exceeding this limit might incur additional charges.
  • Conservation Fee : Before embarking, travelers must also pay a marine park conservation fee of RM30 per person at the jetty.
  • Considerations : The public boat is safe, but it could become quite packed and loud during the high season. Given that there isn’t a proper jetty on the island, expect to tread in water ranging from ankle to knee-depth when you get to Perhentian Islands. It’s advisable to dress accordingly and safeguard electronic items or other valuables in waterproof containers.

Private Boat

  • Flexibility : Unlike the scheduled public boats, private boats function based on demand, offering a direct and tailored route to your chosen beach on the island.
  • Duration : The private boat journey usually takes around 30 minutes.
  • Pricing : Hiring a private boat costs RM350 for a single trip. This fee covers a group of up to 12 passengers.
  • Convenience : One significant advantage of the private boat option is its direct route, eliminating the multiple stops that public boats make. You can also pre-arrange your return journey details with the boat operator. Additionally, there aren’t any restrictions on luggage weight, and travelers are exempt from the marine park conservation fee, allowing for a hassle-free experience as you take in the picturesque surroundings.

Where to Stay in the Perhentian Islands

On Kecil Island, the divide between budget and high-end accommodations is quite evident. Coral Bay appeals to those with a penchant for budget travel. Here, many accommodations veer toward the basic, giving guests a genuine, unfiltered island experience. However, you should be prepared, especially when it comes to amenities like bathrooms which can be rustic… to put it kindly. These type of stays are not my cup of tea; I always hold the belief of “you get what you pay for” close. I’d rather invest a more for enhanced comfort. But travel is an intensely personal experience. Even if the accommodations are basic, Coral Bay compensates with its traveler vibe, budget-friendly beachfront eateries and stunning sunset.

On the other side of the island you’ll find Long Beach . Here, you’re greeted with an expanse of soft sand, clear waters, and a spectrum of places to stay. If you’re angling for luxury, this is where you’ll likely find your fit. Among the accommodations, three resorts stand out:

Perhentian islands, malaysia: complete travel guide

Bubu Villa : This is the place we stayed in and I loved it. It’s situated at the rightmost end of Long Beach and I loved the harmony of its structure, not one of those huge resorts that ruin everything, it perfectly blended with the setting and offered lovely rooms with top-notch amenities.  Their restaurant has a lot of variety, offering dishes perfected by both Malaysian and Italian chefs. I’m not a breakfast person but I did not skip one breakfast during my stay here. They have a simple breakfast buffet but you can then order pancakes, french toast, homelletes etc from the chef and oh man, the pancakes were sensational. They also have a spa and the spa sessions were my daily retreat; massages were priced between €30-40, depending on your selection. We chose the Garden Villa, a space that seamlessly blended indoor luxury with outdoor freshness. An interesting design choice was the open concept for the toilet area, sans a door, which might raise a few eyebrows if you’re on a romantic trip!

Bubu Resort : This is Bubu Villa’s sister property, ensconced on Long Beach’s opposite end. Many of its luxuries mirror that of Bubu Villa. However, an aspect to be cognizant of is the receding tide during late afternoons, causing the beach to seem a tad remote. It’s a natural interplay, but something you’d want to factor in.

Andovan Resort : This is another good one on Long Beach. While I have personal experiences with the first two, the buzz around Andovan Resort suggests it’s a place of comfort and charm, catering to varying budgets and tastes. The down side is that they don’t have sunbeds on the beach.

Mimpi: this is another resort but it’s not located on Long Beach. But it combines the raw beauty of the Perhentian Islands with modern comforts, ensuring a stay that’s both authentic and luxurious.

In essence, whether you’re a budget traveler or someone seeking luxury, Perhentian Kecil, with its distinct stays in Coral Bay and Long Beach, ensures every traveler finds their niche.

What to Do in the Perhentian Islands

The Perhentian Islands are a tropical paradise, offering a diverse array of activities for all types of travelers. From scuba diving in the clear waters to hiking its lush trails, there’s never a dull moment here. Let’s delve into some of the top activities you can indulge in:

Scuba Diving

Scuba diving is a major attraction in the Perhentian Islands, thanks to the clear waters and vibrant marine life. It’s also surprisingly affordable, making it a popular choice for many visitors. My friend Valentina ventured into the depths, even partaking in night dives and cleaning dives where she assisted in removing ocean trash. Whether you’re a seasoned diver or a newbie, the underwater world here will leave you mesmerized. Her diving center was Lekkers Divers on Long Beach, she said they were really nice and they offer diving courses from beginners to professional. The course costs around €200 and every dive is then around €17, super cheap!

Island Hopping

Island hopping is an adventure you shouldn’t miss. We organized a day trip through our hotel to Redang and Lang Tengah . The first stop was at Lang Tengah and it was a revelation; it felt like an untouched paradise with minimal tourists. There’s a resort on the island for those interested in an extended stay, but I found it perfect for a day’s visit given its quiet nature. Here, the waters unveiled a marine marvel – from packs of needlefish darting around to the cute nemos (clownfish) hiding amidst the corals and many small sharks. For your information, these small sharks are not aggressive, and in general, the sharks in the Perhentian Islands are not known to be hostile to humans. Visit in the morning for clearer waters as the afternoon sees a low tide.

Redang Island was next, where we were lucky enough to spot turtles at Turtle’s Bay, right next to Taaras Beach where the Taaras Hotel is located. The sight of these majestic creatures swimming freely was unforgettable, we brought bait (calamari) to attract them.

Perhentian islands, malaysia: complete travel guide

Before heading back, we made a pitstop at a sandbank right off Redang. Imagine a slender tail of pristine sand surrounded by the clearest water imaginable. It was a moment of sheer bliss, made even more special by the fact that it was only us and another boat enjoying this paradise. Karla, our hotel’s manager, mentioned that it’s common to find up to 10 boats anchored here, so we realized how fortunate we were to experience it in such a tranquil setting.

For refreshments, we had packed sandwiches and drinks, but you could also opt for a local restaurant. The entire trip cost us €400, and with the boat accommodating up to 12 people, it can be a cost-effective outing for a group. Definitely one of the highlights of our trip and super worth it.

Beach Hopping

Another day, we embarked on a boat trip around the two Perhentian Islands. Wadi, our captain, introduced us to several hidden gems. Here are the best beaches in Perhentian Islands:

Kerenjani Beach/Mira Beach (Kecil Perhentian): Tucked away on Kecil Perhentian, Kerenjani Beach, often referred to as Mira Beach, boasts an ethereal sight with its pristine shoreline flanked by swaying palm trees. Here, you can find the Keranji Beach Resort, a quaint establishment characterized by its simplicity. Comprising just a handful of bungalows, it offers a peaceful escape from the more bustling parts of the island. While it’s a relatively small beach, its ambiance and scenic backdrop make it worth the visit.

Turtle Beach (Besar Perhentian): Situated on Besar Perhentian, Turtle Beach might just claim the title of the most stunning beach in the Perhentian Islands. Words seem insufficient to describe the mesmerizing hue of the waters here. While its name suggests the presence of turtles, we didn’t spot any during our visit. However, our encounter with these majestic creatures at Redang more than made up for it.

Romantic Beach (Kecil Perhentian): Romantic Beach, with its evocative name, is truly an epitome of tropical allure on Kecil Perhentian. A blend of clear waters, soft sand, and gentle waves creates a serene environment, making it a favorite spot for couples and those seeking a tranquil setting. This beach is known for its sunsets, so be sure to stick around as the day draws to a close.

Teluk Pauh (Besar Perhentian): Teluk Pauh is distinguished not only by its natural beauty but also by its vibrant jetty. The colorful jetty here adds a touch of whimsy to the surroundings, making it a popular photo spot. Dive into the azure waters, or just relax on the sandy shores — either way, Teluk Pauh offers a memorable experience.

Adam and Eve Beach (Kecil Perhentian): Another gem on Kecil Perhentian, Adam and Eve Beach is a secluded paradise perfect for those looking to get away from the crowds. The beach is fringed with lush greenery, and its crystalline waters beckon visitors to take a dip. The tranquility here is palpable, making it an ideal spot for relaxation.

Turtle Beach (Kecil Perhentian): Not to be confused with its namesake on Besar Perhentian, Turtle Beach on Kecil Perhentian is a lovely stretch of sand and sea. While it shares the name, the vibes can be quite different, offering another perspective of the island’s diverse beachscapes.

Each of these beaches presents its own unique charm and beauty, ensuring that your Perhentian Islands trip is filled with a plethora of memorable beachside moments. If you don’t want to go on a boat trip, you can just get a boat taxi that will take you to a beach and asked to be picked up later on. Just exchange numbers so you can communiate via whatsapp.

The islands also boast a number of hiking trails. While I don’t have the exact names of the trails at the tip of my fingers, I’d urge you to do some research or ask locals upon arrival. Ensure you bring along appropriate hiking shoes and stay hydrated.

You can easily rent a kayak on Long Beach, typically for around 25-30RM per hour. Paddle out and enjoy the serene surroundings from a different perspective.

Pamper Yourself

After days filled with adventure, unwind and treat yourself to a rejuvenating spa session. At Bubu Villa’s spa, I indulged in daily massages priced between 30-40 euros for an hour. While you might find more affordable options, the quality here was top-notch. From foot reflexology to aromatherapy massages, there’s a treatment for every mood. For those sunburned adventures, treatments with ice and aloe vera provide much-needed relief.

Where to Eat in the Perhentian Islands

The culinary delights in Perhentian cater to a broad spectrum of palates. Bubu Villa, where we stayed, served an array of tantalizing dishes. Their seafood barbecue, where you choose the catch of the day, is a gastronomic experience. The tiger prawns were to die for (so big they looked more like lobsters), as are the squids. Expect to pay around €30 per person for a hearty meal here. Post dinner, Long Beach becomes the island’s epicenter of entertainment, with fire shows and music that lasts until the wee hours.

Nightlife on Kecil Perhentian Island

On Kecil Perhentian Island, specifically Long Beach, the evenings transform into a relaxed yet lively ambiance. Just 20 meters from Bubu Villa, there’s a standout beach bar, the nightlife hub on the beach. This is where island-goers gather to enjoy the fireshow – a mesmerizing performance with talented locals showcasing their skills with flaming poi. Visitors can grab a prime spot, sit down with a shisha or a cold beer, and relish the spectacle. There’s no grand discotheque setup; it’s raw, simple, and incredibly authentic. With just the music, the dance of the flames, the whisper of waves, and the company of fellow travelers, it’s an experience that perfectly captures the essence of Kecil Perhentian. Dance barefoot on the sand, laugh, and let the rhythm of nature and camaraderie guide your night!

When to travel to Perhentian Islands

The Perhentian Islands experience a tropical climate, which means they are warm year-round. However, like most tropical destinations, they have distinct wet and dry seasons that can influence your travel plans.

Best Time : The optimal time to visit the Perhentian Islands is during the dry season , which typically runs from March to October . During these months, you can expect sunny skies, calm seas, and excellent visibility underwater – perfect for diving and snorkeling. This period also sees the islands at their liveliest, with all resorts open and various activities available for tourists.

Monsoon Season : Between November and February , the islands experience their monsoon season. Heavy rainfall, strong winds, and choppy seas are the norms during this period. Many resorts close down, and boat services become limited due to rough sea conditions.

Is it worth visiting Perhentian Islands?

Definitely. The Perhentian Islands were the highlight of my trip. Think clear blue waters that can rival the Maldives, but without the hefty price tag or the crowds. It’s got that laid-back vibe where you can genuinely relax and feel miles away from the hustle and bustle. Unlike some touristy spots, these islands still feel authentic. You won’t find massive resorts overshadowing the natural beauty. Instead, you’ll discover local charm and untouched beaches. If you’re after a real getaway where the beauty of nature takes center stage, then yeah, the Perhentian Islands are totally worth it.

Environmental Responsibility

While the Perhentian Islands are a paradise in many aspects, like many pristine locations worldwide, they aren’t immune to the global issue of litter. During my visit, I did come across occasional trash on the shores. As responsible travelers, it’s our duty to ensure we leave no trace. If you stumble upon any litter, please take a moment to pick it up and dispose of it properly. Not only does this protect the environment and marine life, but it also preserves the beauty of the islands for future visitors.

Health and Safety Perhentian Islands

When planning a trip to a paradise like Kecil Perhentian Island, it’s easy to get lost in the dreamy azure waters and white sandy beaches. However, ensuring your safety and health should be at the forefront of your preparations. Here are some essential tips to keep in mind:

  • Travel Insurance : Before you embark on your journey, ensure you have comprehensive travel insurance that covers potential medical emergencies, especially when visiting remote destinations.
  • Sun Protection : The tropical sun can be intense. Protect yourself by applying sunblock regularly, wearing a hat, and ensuring you stay hydrated. Bring along sunblock, after sun lotions, and perhaps aloe vera for natural relief in case of sunburns.
  • Water Safety : Tap water on the island isn’t safe to drink. Ensure you always drink bottled water and avoid ice in your beverages unless you’re sure it’s been made from purified water.
  • Medical Facilities : There’s no hospital on Kecil Perhentian Island. While there are small clinics that can handle minor medical issues, serious medical emergencies may require evacuation to the mainland. It’s vital to be prepared.
  • Medications : Always pack essential medicines, especially if you have specific health concerns or conditions. For instance, during my trip, I regretted not bringing Monuril for my UTI. Additionally, consider packing probiotics to maintain gut health, especially if you’re trying various local foods. Insect repellent is another must-have, given the tropical environment. FYI coconut water does miracles for UTIs!

by Drifter Planet | Jul 14, 2021 | Malaysia , Islands

travel from thailand to perhentian islands

The Perhentian Islands Travel Guide has been written by Laura Peters and edited by the website editor.

Imagine picture perfect white sandy beaches, clear blue water, colorful coral reef, hills that are covered with rainforest and spectacular viewpoints – it all sounds too good to be true? Welcome to the Perhentian archipelago – Malaysia’s lesser known paradise island group.

If you’re an island-lover, the Perhentian Islands are not to be missed. If you’re visiting Malaysia (or just South East Asia in general) then do yourself a favor, give yourself a break from the bustling Kuala Lumpur . Take a few days to explore the turquoise water and white sand beaches of these islands make for a perfect holiday getaway. You wouldn’t want to leave!

Ready to know more? First, let us introduce Malaysia’s Perhentian Islands to you.

What and Where are The Perhentian Islands?

The Perhentian Islands lie between Northeast Malaysia and Thailand. They have everything it takes to be called a tropical paradise. In today’s age of over tourism and Instagram led hectic travel madness, these islands will kind of give you a sense of peace that not a lot of so called peaceful destinations offer.

Long Beach, Perhentian Kecil, Malaysia

Historically, The Perhentian Islands were a stopping point for traders that traveled between Bangkok and Malaysia. In today’s age, they are a part of Pulau Redang National Marine Park and are protected. They are in the state of Terengganu in Malaysia.

The Perhentian Islands Map

Out of all the Perhentian Islands, two of them are the main ones:

  • Big Perhentian (Pulau Perhentian Besar) – Family friendly
  • Small Perhentian (Pulau Perhentian Kecil) – Backpacker friendly

We will talk more about these two islands in detail one of the next sections.

Apart from the main two islands, there are five other uninhabited islands which you will probabaly visit if you go diving or snorkeling as mentioned in the things to do on the Perhentian Islands section.

Are The Perhentian Islands Worth Visiting?

Keranji Beach, Perhentian Islands, Malaysia

If you love exploring off-the-beaten-path places, then the Perhentian Islands are definitely worth visiting. We loved that these islands attracted far fewer tourists than other Malaysian islands like Langkawi and Penang .

We also found that these islands had plenty of activities for any type of traveler. With some of the best coral reefs in the country and friendly locals, we highly suggest adding the Perhentian Islands to your bucket list.

How To Get To The Perhentian Islands

travel from thailand to perhentian islands

Getting to Perhentian Islands – Boat – by Omar Elsharawy on Unsplash

Getting to the Perhentian Islands is an adventure in itself. Unlike Langkawi and other Malaysian islands, the Perhentian Islands are very secluded and offer very limited transportation options. But aren’t the most amazing places are?

To start, you’ll need to get from Kuala Lumpur (or your starting destination) to Kota Bahru or Kuala Terengganu. Both of these locations have direct flights from Kuala Lumpur, so it isn’t too inconvenient.

Note: You can also fly into Redang and hire a boat from Redang to the Perhentian Islands, but it is typically a longer journey.

If you fly into Kota Bahru, take a taxi from the airport to the Kuala Besut Jetty. From the jetty, take a boat over to the islands. You’ll tell your boat driver where you want to be let off and they do a great job of accommodating you.

This is by far the easiest way to get to the islands and it’s still relatively cheap, but keep in mind that you’ll want to coordinate your flight so that you can catch a boat across the ocean. The boats only run during certain times of the day.

Another easy way to get to the Perhentian Islands is by flying into Kuala Terengganu. From the airport in Kuala Terengganu, take a taxi to the Kuala Besut Jetty. That’s where you’ll take a boat over to the Perhentian Islands.

Perhentian Besar OR Perhentian Kecil – which one is for you?

As mentioned before, there are two main islands on the Perhentian Island group. Wondering if you should stay on one of them or both? If just one then which one?

Pulau  Besar ( Big Perhentian)

travel from thailand to perhentian islands

Perhentian Besar, Malaysia

Pulau Besar is more expensive in terms of accommodation. It has decent resorts and attracts families and couples. The island has many bays that offer decent snorkeling opportunities.

Pulau Kecil (Small Perhentian)

Pulau Perhentian Kecil is backpacker friendly. A lot of restaurants and places to stay are on the Coral Bay on Perhentian Kecil. Coral Bay offers decent sunset views. As compared to Besar, Kecil attracts more visitors.

Perhentian Islands Things to do + Activities

The paradise of the Perhentian Islands is best for travelers looking to enjoy a beach holiday. There are Perhentian islands activities whether you like adventure, relaxation, or a bit of both; you can find it on the islands. To make your trip to the Perhentian Islands as simple and enjoyable as possible, use our guide to create the ultimate itinerary.

Most travelers spend their time in the ocean or on the beach, but you can also find adventures inland as well. Here are the 13 best things to do in the Perhentian Islands:

1) Diving in the Perhentian Islands

travel from thailand to perhentian islands

Perhentian Island Diving experience by Nazarizal Mohammad on Unsplash

Diving in the Perhentian Islands is a true adventure. The marine life and coral reefs found here are incredible.

As one of the best things to do in the Perhentian Islands, it’s safe to say that these islands boast some of the most colorful diving sites in the world. You will find many dive shops on the Long Beach (Big Island) or the Coral Bay (small island). Here are a few of the diving spots that you cannot miss during your trip:

Tokong Laut

Divers of all experience levels should start their dive tour at Tokong Laut, one of the best dive sites in the Perhentian Islands.

Frequently called Temple of The Sea, Tokong Laut has an amazingly diverse ecosystem. It is home to various species, including neon-colored parrotfish.

Tokong Laut is a diving staple for the Perhentian Islands, so regardless of which company you choose to dive with, you will likely visit this location.

Sugar Wreck

Another awesome dive site of the Perhentian Islands is a sunken shipwreck off Pulau Perhentian Kecil. The Sugar Wreck is a dive spot that will make you feel like you’re living in history.

During your dive, keep your eyes peeled for some Longnose Hawkfish, Cuttlefish, and Porcupinefish (our personal favorite). In our opinion, the Perhentian Islands had some of the most unique marine life we have ever seen.

Shark Point

We have been swimming with blacktip reef sharks all around the world, but it never ceases to amaze us. And you can do the same at Shark Point, another great dive site of the Perhentian Islands.

Contrary to popular belief, not all shark species are dangerous. The blacktip reef sharks are docile compared to their tiger and great white brothers and sisters. So, although these sharks are harmless, it is still an awesome feeling to be diving with sharks.

Note : We recommend diving with a company that has a lot of knowledge about the Malaysian Islands and surrounding reefs. Not only will you learn about the ocean’s biodiversity, but your guides will help you find the best marine life, too.

2) Enjoy the Beaches of the Perhentian Islands

travel from thailand to perhentian islands

Perhentian Islands Beaches – Malaysia

As one of the most beautiful archipelagos in Malaysia, you have to set aside time to explore the many pristine beaches. Whether you want to get a suntan, go snorkeling, or just walk along the shoreline, you’ll fall in love with the white sand beaches and turquoise waters of the Perhentian Islands.

As there are many beaches on the Perhentian Islands, we recommend adding only the best beaches to your Malaysia itinerary. Here are the three beaches you must visit:

Long Beach on Perhentian Kecil

travel from thailand to perhentian islands

Long Beach, Perhentian Kecil

Long Beach is located on the smaller island of Perhentian Kecil. This little piece of paradise has something for everyone, from fun dives to relaxing days spent reading by the water. Stretching along the coast for nearly half of a mile, Long Beach has plenty of restaurants, bars, resorts, and ocean excursion companies.

Note: Although Long Beach is beautiful and may seem like the perfect place to swim, locals know that the riptides here can be deadly. Ask a local before swimming because, during some seasons, the riptides are extremely dangerous. We were there in April and three people nearly drowned because they decided to swim while on Long Beach.

Turtle Beach on Perhentian Besar

If you’re spending time on the larger island, Perhentian Besar, you have to make a stop at Turtle Beach. While visiting other islands in the surrounding area, we decided to stop at this beach for a break.

Although there aren’t any coral reefs to explore, it makes it easier to go into deeper waters without worrying about cutting up your feet.

Keranji Beach on Perhentian Kecil

travel from thailand to perhentian islands

Keranji Beach Bar, Perhentian Islands, Malaysia

By far our favorite beach on the Perhentian Islands was Keranji Beach, located on the small island of Perhentian Kecil. This beach is often overlooked and that’s why we like it so much. With fewer tourists, you’re able to relax and have the beach all to yourself (most of the time).

travel from thailand to perhentian islands

Keranji Beach Huts, Perhentian Islands

There is also a hammock on this beach that is available for anyone to use. Claim the hammock for an hour for a quick nap or to watch the sun dip below the horizon at night.

3) Hike to the Viewpoints

While most travelers to the Perhentian Islands spend their time on the beach or in the ocean, we recommend setting aside some time to explore inland as well.

To get you started on a few hikes on the islands, here are our two favorites:

Perhentian Loop

The Perhentian Loop Trail will lead you to some of the best locations and viewpoints on the big island (Perhentian Besar). This 3-mile hike is easy enough for people of all fitness levels, but with very little shade to cover the trail, you’ll want to head to the beach when you’re done for a refreshing swim in the ocean.

I recommend completing this hike in the early morning to avoid the hottest part of the day, but if you decide to hike in the afternoon, be sure to bring water and some extra cash for a mid-hike snack and drink on the beach.

The Windmill

travel from thailand to perhentian islands

The Windmill Hiking Trail, Perhentian Islands

The Windmill Trek can be found on the smaller Perhentian Island (Perhentian Kecil). This trail brings hikers to the highest point on the island and offers endless scenic views in every direction.

During your hike, you’ll be walking along a washed-out dirt road and similar to the Perhentian Loop Trail, you’ll be exposed to the sun along much of the trail.

If you decide to go hiking while visiting the Perhentian Islands, pack a few bottles of water and bring your sunscreen. You’ll thank me later!

4) Island Hopping to the smaller Perhentian Islands

travel from thailand to perhentian islands

Perhentian Island hopping by Faizah Othman on Unsplash

Apart from the two main Perhentian Islands (Perhentian Besar and Perhentian Kecil) there are several others that you should add to your list of things to do. Here are a few of the best islands to visit while island hopping in the Perhentian Islands:

Pulau Tokong Kemudi

Sitting just north of Perhentian Kecil is Pulau Tokong Kemudi, a magical island perfect for snorkeling, diving, and other water adventures.

Hire a boat to bring you across the South China Sea to this secluded island; it shouldn’t cost an arm and a leg, but if you’re traveling on a budget, find a few friends to go with you from your resort or hostel. This way, you can split the cost.

Redang Island

travel from thailand to perhentian islands

Redang Island, the Perhentian Islands, Malaysia by Aleksandra Khoroshykh on Unsplash

Redang Island is a bit more well-known among travelers than the Perhentian Islands, but that shouldn’t stop you from exploring it while island hopping.

This island is south of Perhentian Besar and offers some unique snorkeling opportunities. With its vibrant coral reefs and tropical fish, I strongly suggest bringing your snorkeling gear during this excursion.

5) Perhentian Islands Snorkeling

travel from thailand to perhentian islands

Perhentian Islands Marine Life

Divers will be hard-pressed to find a more beautiful location for underwater exploration. The Perhentian Islands boast one of Asia’s most impressive barrier reefs, which houses hundreds of different species, and it would be a shame not to explore them.

But if you don’t have your PADI certification or you aren’t too keen on scuba diving, you can’t miss out on snorkeling around the Perhentian Islands.

There are plenty of dive shops that rent snorkeling gear for a reasonable price, but I recommend asking your accommodation if they supply such gear first. Our hosts had hoards of great snorkel gear, so we were able to go snorkeling for free.

6) Watch the Sunset on the Perhentian Islands

travel from thailand to perhentian islands

View from the Crocodile Rock Villas , the Perhentian Islands

The sunsets in the Perhentian Islands are majestic. To start, you’ll be surrounded by the brightest aquamarine water you’ll ever see. As the sun begins to set, watch its reflection in the water and the brilliant colors it radiates.

To make your night even better, watch the sunset from a beach bar with a fruity cocktail or an ice-cold beer.

We loved doing this each night from the comfort of our own nature resort, Crocodile Rock Villas . With an attached restaurant that serves some of the best seafood and Malaysian beers, you may want to make this an evening routine.

7) Make the Most of the Happy Hour

Before the big sunset show, you might be looking for a way to unwind after a long day of hiking, snorkeling, and swimming. And if that’s the case, sit back and relax at one of the many beach bars on either of the Perhentian Islands.

For expansive sea views, we suggest grabbing an affordable happy hour drink at Keranji Beach Bar , located on our favorite beach that shares the same name.

A few other notable beach bars on Perhentian Kecil include El Paraiso Resto Bar and Chillout Cafe .

But, if you’re staying on the bigger island, Perhentian Besar, Jim’s Bar is perfect for classic cocktails and barbequed fresh seafood.

8) Perhentian Islands Kayaking

There are many ways to explore the Perhentian Islands, but our favorite mode of transportation was by kayak. One of our favorite things about kayaking around these islands is that you get to see them in a whole new light.

With each twist and turn, different views emerge, including hidden coves with beautiful turquoise waters, white-sand beaches, and towering limestone cliffs jutting out from lush green mountainsides.

The best way to add a kayaking tour to your itinerary is by renting a kayak from one of the popular beaches like Long Beach, Turtle Beach, or Coral Bay. Prices should be relatively affordable, so make sure to pay for an extended rental package.

But, if you don’t feel comfortable kayaking around the island on your own, simply join a popular snorkeling tour.

9) Camping On The Beach

One of the coolest things to do on the Perhentian Islands is to camp on the beach. The best part about camping on Perhentian Islands is that you are able to experience everything a beach has without ever having to leave. From rolling waves and crashing surf, you’ll be lulled to sleep by the sounds one wouldn’t normally hear in a resort or hotel room.

To experience a night sleeping on one of the beaches of the Perhentian Islands, visit Long Beach on the small island, Perhentian Kecil.

Along this beach, you’ll find a nice campground that comes equipped with tents. We found this to be really helpful as we didn’t want to haul our camping gear around with us.

If you are looking for other campgrounds on the Perhentian Islands, check out Orang Hutan Camping on the westside of Perhentian Kecil, or Perhentian Cabana along the south shore of Perhentian Besar.

10) Watch the Fire Shows

It’s very rare to find an island in Southeast Asia that doesn’t host weekly or nightly fire shows. Whether you’re exploring the Thai islands , the Filipino islands , or the Indonesian island s, you’re bound to find a fire show at one of the nearest beaches.

Luckily, the Perhentian Islands are no different, which means that fire shows are one of the best things to do and experience while visiting.

Above all, the best place to watch a fire show on the Perhentian Islands is on Long Beach . Make your way to beach bars after the sun has set and wait for the coveted fire show.

11) Visit The Turtle Sanctuary

travel from thailand to perhentian islands

Turtle Sanctuary Perhential Islands – by qianyu pan on Unsplash

In 2015, an environmentally conscious group of adventurers established the Perhentian Turtle Project to advocate for and protect sea turtle populations in Malaysia. Through a collaborative effort between environmental activists and officials from the Fisheries Ministry and Marine Parks Division (MPD), this project is able to respond quickly when stranded turtles are reported on beaches.

To make your stay on the Perhentian Islands as memorable as possible, consider volunteering for this amazing project. Not only will you get to enjoy the sights of an island paradise, but you’ll be able to contribute and give back to nature.

You can sign up to volunteer with the Perhentian Turtle Project by visiting their website .

12) Day Trip To Terengganu Marine Park

travel from thailand to perhentian islands

Turtles – Terengganu Marine Park by Nazarizal Mohammad on Unsplash

For an additional adventure during your island hopping day trip, I recommend stopping at Terengganu Marine Park. Just off the coast of Redang Island, Terengganu Marine Park is just like its famous neighbor and has its own set of exciting underwater features to explore.

Hire a boat from Coral Bay, Long Beach, or Perhentian Besar and spend the day on some of the best beaches in Malaysia. Although we found more snorkeling opportunities in Perhentian Kecil, Terengganu Marine Park made up for it with beautiful views.

If you decide to add Terengganu Marine Park to your Perhentian Islands itinerary, bring your snorkeling gear anyway. This marine park may be lacking in coral reefs, but they still have some of the most fascinating fish.

13) Try The Local Food

travel from thailand to perhentian islands

Fresh Fish at Crocodile Rock Bistro, Perhentian Islands

The best way to get a good feel of the culture in any destination is to try the food. And the Perhentian Islands aren’t any different.

The Perhentian Islands aren’t the most accessible islands in the world, which means that the islands provide for themselves as often as possible. Fish and other seafood are a staple of any meal in the Perhentian Islands and you’ll find that it is a lot fresher here than nearly anywhere else in the world.

For the fresh catch of the day, I recommend going to Crocodile Rock Bistro on the small island of Perhentian Kecil. And for the most delicious giant shrimp, visit Keranji Beach Cafe’.

On the big island of Perhentian Besar, check out Ocean Boys Cafe for classic barbeque and seafood. Hang around for a while after dinner for an impressive fire show.

Where To Stay In The Perhentian Islands

The Perhentian Islands aren’t very big islands, so accommodation options are limited. But I was impressed to see a wide variety of different types of accommodation.

There were campsites, luxury resorts, homestays, hostels, and more. Whatever your budget, the Perhentian Islands could serve you.

Here are a few different accommodation options on the Perhentian Islands that you should consider for your holiday:

Crocodile Rock Villas

View from the Crocodile Rock Villas, the Perhentian Islands

We chose to stay in the Crocodile Rock Villas because it seemed that this nature resort was well-equipped. Since we work online, it was nice to have a wifi connection and it’s always a good trip when the bed is comfortable.

The Crocodile Rock Villas checked all the boxes and the owners, Erika and Atord are some of the most welcoming people you’ll meet.

Note: If you are getting to the Kuala Besut Jetty later in the evening and the boats are no longer running, reach out to Erika and ask if she can set up a private transfer. That way, you don’t have to spend the night on the mainland before heading over to the islands.

Bubu Resort

It’s hard to visit Perhentian Kecil and not notice Bubu Resort . On the far end of Long Beach, Bubu Resort sits in all of its glory, capturing the most picturesque view of the islands.

For an upscale stay, Bubu Resort has it all from direct beach access to spa services to an onsite bar and restaurant. It’s safe to say that Bubu Resort will take care of all of your problems so that you can fully enjoy your stay on the Perhentian Islands.

Long Beach Camp

For the most unique accommodation option in the Perhentian Islands, check out Long Beach Camp . As mentioned before, this is one of the best things to do on the islands.

Stay on the beach for a late-night fire show before retreating back to camp. Listen for the waves crashing into the beach; this sound will lull you to sleep. And as morning approaches, I recommend getting up early to watch the sunrise and to explore the shoreline before other travelers get up.

How To Get Around The Perhentian Islands

travel from thailand to perhentian islands

Coral Bay, Perhentian Islands

The Perhentian Islands have no paved roads nor any motorized vehicles. To get around the Perhentian Islands, you can choose to walk or to take water taxis.

We chose to walk everywhere we went while visiting the Perhentian Islands and although some of the destinations are a bit far from each other, the unbelievable scenery kept us occupied.

Taking a water taxi is likely the quickest way to get around the Perhentian Islands. Water taxis stop at many of the beaches around the islands, so I recommend asking your accommodation host where the closest water taxi stop is located.

Best Time To Visit The Perhentian Islands

travel from thailand to perhentian islands

The lovely Perhentian Islands

The Perhentian Islands experience two distinct seasons: the rainy season and the dry season. The rainy season lasts from November to March and during this time, many restaurants and resorts shut down.

We recommend visiting the Perhentian Islands when it is sunny and dry so that you can maximize your time on the beach or in the ocean. You’ll get the best weather from mid-March to early November. But keep in mind, the dry season will also bring in more tourists and higher resort prices.

Safety On The Perhentian Islands

Overall, Malaysia is a safe country and the Perhentian Islands are no different. The crime rate is very low but always take normal safety precautions.

On the other hand, the Perhentian Islands do pose some safety concerns. Long Beach, one of the most popular spots on the islands, can be extremely dangerous during certain times of the year.

With strong currents and riptides, this beach has claimed many lives over the years. To stay safe, always check with your host before swimming in the ocean at Long Beach. In addition, pay attention to any signs on the beach warning of danger. Take these signs seriously.

The Perhentian Islands, Malaysia – Paradise island group with pristine beaches and rain forest

The Perhentian Islands are the perfect location for those looking to get away from the hustle and bustle of Kuala Lumpur or more popular island destinations. If you’re ready for some rest, relaxation, and beautiful turquoise bays, book your flight to the Perhentian Islands.

This is one of the most secluded and off-the-beaten-path island paradises in Malaysia that will leave you feeling completely refreshed. We hope you enjoy your time on the Perhentian Islands as much as we did.

Hi, Sorry I saw this too late. I hope you aren’t still stuck on the mainland and have found your way.

Long Beach is on Big Island or Small Island? There is text on this page saying “You will find many dive shops on the Long Beach (Big Island) or the Coral Bay (small island)” then there is “visit Long Beach on the small island”. Are there two Long Beach?

Top 15 Things To Do In Perhentian Islands [2024]

You’ve found your slice of paradise – Perhentian Islands! But now you are wondering what to do in Perhentian Islands?

You are in the right place. Below, we share all the best things to do in Perhentian Islands – whether you’re wondering what are the things to do in Perhentian Kecil or what to do in Perhentian Besar. Either way, I’ll share all of my favourite activities in Pulau Perhentian in this post – read on!

The Perhentian Islands (or Pulau Perhentian) are located off the east coast of the northern part of Malaysia. They are known for their beautiful beaches, crystal clear water, jungle trekking and fabulous underwater marine life. While these are the main Perhentian Island attractions, there are also more things to do in Pulau Perhentian than this.

The Perhentian Islands are a collection of islands with the main ones (where all these Perhentian Island activities are located on or around) being Perhentian Besar and Perhentian Kecil. These islands are close together and it’s easy to hire a boat to take you between the two during daylight hours.

Top 15 Things To Do In Perhentian Islands [2021]

Perhentian itself actually means stop . A very appropriate name as you will want to stop on these islands for awhile! This is a very beautiful part of the world.

But more about that below! In addition to what to do in Pulau Perhentian, we share information about where to stay, the differences between the main two islands, how to get there, the best time to visit and what it’s like in Perhentian Islands with kids if you are thinking about visiting as a family.

The Perhentians are not just a great place to relax and soak up the sunshine, there are also plenty of Perhentian Island things to do which make them a unique island destination in Malaysia. The good news is that you definitely don’t need to be worried about getting bored or struggling to find Pulau Perhentian things to do here!

By the end, you’ll know exactly what to do and where to be on your trip for a fabulous time!

Top 15 Best Things To Do In Perhentian Islands, Malaysia

Go scuba diving.

Learning to dive at the Perhentian Islands

If you are a diver, or thinking about learning to dive, this is the perfect place to do it! Diving is one of the top Pulau Perhentian activities.

One of the most popular things to do Perhentian Islands has to offer, diving in the Perhentians allows you to enjoy the coral reefs around the islands. It’s also easy to organise diving trips further afield to Redang Island or Pulau Lang Tengah.

There are many dive centres for Perhentian Islands diving on the islands which keeps prices low, and this is a very good value dive destination.

If you aren’t certified yet, it’s a great place to do your PADI open water course as well with it possible to do a course for about RM1,200 including simple accommodation.

If you aren’t certified yet, it’s also possible to do a discovery dive to try it out.

There are plenty of options for diving on both Perhentian Besar and Perhentian Kecil, so whether you’re looking for what to do in Perhentian Kecil island or on Besar, you’ll always have diving options close by.

Try Snorkelling

So much great snorkelling in the Perhentians

Another of the most common answers to the question “Perhentian Island – what to do” is snorkelling! If you aren’t a diver, don’t worry. You can still enjoy the amazing underwater environment with one of the most popular activities in Perhentian Island – snorkelling!

There is some great snorkelling on offer, so there is no reason to feel like you are missing out.

Snorkelling is definitely one of the top Perhentian Islands things to do as no matter where you are, there are plenty of good snorkelling spots and places that will rent you out equipment for a very modest cost. Snorkelling is also a good option if you’re looking for what to do in Pulau Perhentian Besar.

You can rent snorkels from many resorts and guesthouses. You shouldn’t have any problem finding one. Some good spots where you can snorkel off the beach are:

  • Northern end of Long Beach on Perhentian Kecil
  • In front of Coral View Island Resort on Perhentian Besar

Part of the area where you can snorkel outside Coral View Resort next to the Perhentian Island Resort jetty

There are also some great boat trips that can take you to a few different snorkelling spots. This is recommended over snorkelling off the beach as the marine environment is usually in much better condition – meaning you get to see more!

Watch Turtles

If you are a turtle fan, you will love this Pulau Perhentian attraction! Turtles can be seen at many of the snorkelling and diving spots around the island. When you are booking diving or snorkelling trips, ask where they have been seen recently and head there.

But, even better, is if you visit between June and September when there is the chance you may see giant green turtles laying eggs on the beach. One spot for this is the beach at the Perhentian Island Resort if you’re looking for things to do in Perhentian Besar.

You can also visit Turtle Sanctuary Beach on Besar during the day which is one of the most stunning spots on the Perhentians. You will need to get a boat here or kayak and leave before sunset when the beach is only for turtles.

Turtle Sanctuary Beach

Volunteering At The Perhentian Turtle Project

You can take your love of turtles a step further with volunteering at the Perhentian Turtle Project from March to September if you’re wondering what to do at Pulau Perhentian during a longer stay. The minimum time commitment is two weeks.

As a volunteer, you can do things like snorkel trips to identify turtles and photograph their habitat, patrolling for nesting turtles at night and learn how to deter poaches.

This is a paid program and prices include dorm accommodation, meals, activities and the ferry to and from Kuala Besut. There is plenty of time to enjoy the islands as well.

Click here for more information about this program.

Go Sea Kayaking

Kayaking in Perhentian Islands, visit prehentian islands

For a fun answer to what to do at Perhentian Island AND a great way to explore either Perhentian Island, go sea kayaking. This is great if you’re the more active type looking to explore different places to visit in Perhentian Island that are off the beaten path, as by sea kayak you can find your own secluded bays and coves.

Kayaking Perhentian Islands is a great way to see more of the islands and get some great views from the water. You may even be able to find your own beach!

Outside the monsoon, the waters are usually calm and you can go alone or with a tour.

You can rent kayaks from many guesthouses on both Besar and Kecil, and it’s definitely one of my favourite Perhentian things to do.

Go Camping At Teluk KK

Teluk Keke

For a different choice of the things to do at Perhentian Island, or if you’re looking for alternative Pulau Perhentian Besar attractions, head to Teluk Keke on Perhentian Besar. Here, you can stay at a campground on the southern end of the beach where you can sleep under the stars.

You can ask at your guesthouse where you can hire camping equipment or there are some tents available at Keke but not other camping equipment like bedding.

Explore The Wonderful Beaches

Perhentian Island Resort Beach - diving malaysia Perhentian Island

If there is an essential thing to do on Perhentian Islands, it’s exploring the beaches! There are many wonderful beaches. It would be a shame to stick to just one!

Some of the best beaches on Perhentian Besar are:

  • The beach outside the Perhentian Island Resort
  • Turtle Sanctuary Beach

Some of the best beaches on Perhentian Kecil are:

  • Beaches around Teluk Kerma
  • Petani Beach
  • Keranji Beach

Perhentian Island Long Beach is one of the most beautiful beaches, and also the most popular beach for good reason. If you’re wondering what to do in Long Beach Perhentian, there’s plenty going on here, from restaurants to bars, swimming, snorkelling, boat trips and just soaking up the vibes.

But this isn’t the best beach for getting away from the action or enjoying a peaceful experience.

You can find more information on different beach areas in my guide here.

Go Jungle Trekking

The jungle trek that cuts across Perhentian Besar

If you can pull yourself out of the water then another must do activity on Perhentian Islands is to go jungle trekking! The interior of both main islands has some great jungle to explore. There are many trekking opportunities.

If you’re wondering what to do in Pulau Perhentian Kecil this is also a good option as there’s a jungle trek that runs between Coral Bay and Long Beach on either side of the island. We did this hike, and it’s great.

It’s also a great way to see more of the islands and the only thing that is tough about it is finding the entry point! So I help you with this below.

I recommend you pick at least one that’s convenient to where you are staying and add it to your Perhentian Islands itinerary! Hiking in the Perhentians is also a great way to find your new best place in Perhentian Island that others may not have discovered.

Some popular hikes:

travel from thailand to perhentian islands

1. Besar Island North To South – One of my favourite Pulau Perhentian Besar things to do, you can take this trek that goes from behind the Perhentian Island Resort to Teluk Dalam on the island’s south side. It’s about 2.5 kilometres long and takes about an hour thanks to being hilly.

It has by far the most adventurous feeling of the treks we did and you really feel like you have escaped everything in the jungle.

The start of the path from Long Beach to Coral Bay

2. Kecil Island Long Beach To Coral Bay – This is probably the best known Perhentian Islands long beach trek – it’s signposted and the paved path will take you between these two beach areas on the east and west sides of the island.

It’s up and over a hill but it’s easy and takes only 15 minutes. Unfortunately, you do get a close look at some of the trash problems on the island.

The start of the boardwalk from Long Beach to the Village

3. Long Beach To The Village – This “boardwalk” runs from near the start of the path between Long Beach and Coral Bay to the village. You can’t miss the starting sign pictured above.

4. Kecil Island Coral Bay To The Village – This west coast track is a lovely one between Coral Bay and Petani Beach then on to the Village where it is often shaded and offers regular glimpses of the coastline. It takes about an hour. It’s my favourite one and I have full details and instructions below!

You can also combine 2, 3 and 4 above for a really fantastic hike! But one way treks work well as there are many sea taxis to take you between locations (more about this below).

Make sure you take plenty of water – it’s HOT. Also ensure that you will finish your trek before it’s dark. Leave the flip flops in your room and wear sturdier shoes.

Hiking From The Village To Coral Bay On Perhentian Island

We took a sea taxi to the Village from Perhentian Besar and then hiked from here continuing on to Long Beach. You can just as easily do this in reverse.

To find the start of this path, walk left on arrival and keep going until you get to another sea taxi stand just before the end of the village area by a beach. Behind this, is what looks like a local path running up through the Village. Walk up it, until you find the following sign to Petani Beach – you are at the start of the path!

sign to show the start of the Perhentian Island trek from the Village

The first part of the trek is to Petani Beach. There are up and down parts but it is pleasant with plenty of shade. Petani Beach itself is the most built up beach on this path until Coral Bay.

travel from thailand to perhentian islands

At the end of Petani Beach, the path continues. It is easy to spot.

Not long after Petani Beach was my favourite part of the walk – a tiny private cove. There are quite a few of these over the length of the walk.

private beach on Perhentian Kecil

After Petani, we regularly started seeing little beaches with resorts and restaurants, all very low key. I particularly liked Keranji Beach.

Keranji Beach, Perhentian Kecil

Whenever you hit a beach like this, you walk to the end and the next section of the path is always obvious. It keeps winding its way around the coast to Coral Bay.

A typical part of the path with a friendly lizard

The path is generally in good condition but there are parts with trees over it. Mostly, with makeshift paths around them but sometimes you need to do some weird limbo action.

Tree across path in Perhentian Kecil hike

70 minutes after we left the village, we arrived at the start of Coral Bay. I did this hike with my 7 year old and a broken toe so I’m sure you can do it faster this with no hardship.

It’s a fun walk and we really enjoyed it. It’s a great option if you’ve run out of other ideas for Pulau Perhentian what to do options!

Coral Bay Perhentian Islands

It also felt like we had the path alone. We only came across one other person walking on it and that was right at the end. I highly recommend it!

Relax At The Perhentian Island Resort

Perhentian Island Resort Beach

If you are looking for things to do in Pulau Perhentian Besar, take a walk to Perhentian Island Resort if you are not staying here already (otherwise enjoy the facilities and make at least a half day of it!). It’s the best place in Pulau Perhentian in my opinion!

This resort is towards the northern end of the west coast and is set on a stunning beach. You can relax, have a bite to eat, hire a kayak and snorkel nearby. There’s also usually some beach volleyball and soccer set up.

Visit Mosque A R Rahman Pulau Perhentian

Mosque A R Rahman Pulau Perhentian Masjid

For a different answer to what to do in Perhentian Kecil, head to Mosque A R Rahman Pulau Perhentian. This attractive mosque is built over water at the island’s main village. You can enter if dressed appropriately.

Also keep a look out for it as you arrive on the islands – you should get a good view from your ferry.

Visit the Fishing Village (Kampung Pasir Hantu)

The main village on Perhentian Kecil

While you are visiting the mosque, you can also visit the local fishing village which is located here. It’s definitely a different side of these islands to see how the locals live and work as these islands are not just for tourists.

It’s a colourful little village with plenty of restaurants and shops.

The best way to visit is by hiring a taxi boat to take you. Ideally, visit in the morning as the local fishermen bring in their catch.

Get Great Views Of Perhentian Kecil From The Wind Turbines

Long Beach with the wind turbines in the background

For some great views and a work out, this option of the things to do in Pulau Perhentian Kecil is worth finding time for.

The wind turbines are on top of a hill. There is either a short trail (made up of steep stairs) from the coast that a boat can drop you off at OR you can take the hiking trail from Long Beach to Teluk Kerma and you will find these about 20 minutes along after leaving Long Beach.

After you take lots of photos and finish enjoying the views, you can choose whether to head on to Teluk Kerma, back to Long Beach or back down the stairs to the coast (note that last time we went that the stairs were in bad shape and may not be safe).

Eat And Drink On Long Beach

resort long beach Perhentian

If you want a bit of action during your Perhentian Island trip and a wide range of drinking and eating options then Long Beach on Perhentian Kecil is the place to head. This is the most developed beach, and there are many choices!

It has a party reputation, and this is also the best place to go in the evening if you want to go out. Note that it’s not safe to travel by boat after dark so if you are staying on Besar or elsewhere on Kecil, leave before sunset.

Watch A Fire Show

Fire Dancing Show on Perhentian Kecil

The second last item on our list of things to do in Perhentian Islands is to watch a fire show! These take place on Long Beach on Perhentian Kecil.

These can seem to happen somewhat randomly along the beach, and you may find them between 7:30-8:30pm at the northern end of the beach.

There is also usually a main show around 10:30pm near the outside of the Bubu Long Beach Resort. Asking at your closest bar what’s happening that night is usually the best way to make sure you don’t miss out.

You can sit on the beach and enjoy a drink while watching the dance and fire show. The performers are very talented, and it’s lots of fun. It’s definitely the best of the things to do in Perhentian Islands at night.

Take A Day Trip To Redang Island

malaysia when to go

Redang Island is another gorgeous east coast Malaysian island about a 60 minute boat ride from Perhentian Islands. It’s possible to visit here on a day trip (if you are planning to stay on Redang you can also do the reverse and do a day trip to Perhentian Island from Redang).

Surrounded by a marine park, it also has some great diving and snorkelling. In addition to this, you can explore the beaches, go kayaking and do many of the same activities mentioned above while seeing a different part of the world.

Find our list of things to do on Redang here.

Perhentian Besar Vs Perhentian Kecil

travel from thailand to perhentian islands

Now you know all about the activities on Perhentian Islands, you might be wondering about the differences between the main islands, Perhentian Besar and Perhentian Kecil, and which one you are best to stay on.

Besar means big and kecil means small – meaning that Perhentian Besar is the bigger of the two islands.

Perhentian Besar is also the quieter and cruisier of the two. I read that it is more developed but personally I found areas of Kecil much more developed. It has a bigger range of resorts and is often recommended for families or people who want nicer accommodation, and want to get away from it all.

I think the accommodation is better value here, and I like that the resorts are a bit more spaced out and there is less of an top-of-each-other feel like on Long Beach or Coral Bay.

travel from thailand to perhentian islands

Perhentian Kecil has a reputation as a backpacker island, and most people that stay here are backpackers. There is also more of an opportunity to party. There are more budget accommodation options including camping in great spots on Long Beach, and there are some top resort options too. But I think the value is better on Besar where there are cheap options as well.

Alcohol is more readily available on Kecil and there are places open late, especially compared to Besar where everything is shut by 11pm. So Kecil is definitely the better island if you want to party and have plenty of choice for drinks in the evening.

If you are after the best beach it is pretty hard to beat the beautiful soft sands of Long Beach on Kecil, but the downside is you will have to share it with many others. Some of the beaches on Besar have quite a bit of Coral, but you’re much more likely to find a quieter spot for yourself.

I prefer Besar as I don’t want to be out late and the accommodation is better value. But, if you want night life, you definitely want to pick Kecil and stay on Long Beach. While it’s easy to journey between the two islands and explore both, you shouldn’t do this once it is dark.

While sea taxis do operate in the evening (at twice the price!), it isn’t safe and I don’t recommend taking one.

Either island is beautiful though so you can’t go wrong!

Best Resorts In Perhentian Islands

Perhentian Island Resort

There are some fabulous accommodation options on Perhentian Islands and I list choices for all budgets in my accommodation guide here. I also include more information about each beach area on the islands so you can find your perfect spot.

Below are my top choices for the best resort in Perhentian Islands for each island.

Perhentian Island Resort Review – Best Resort on Perhentian Besar

travel from thailand to perhentian islands

The Perhentian Island Resort is in a stunning location on a beautiful beach in the northern part of the west coast of Perhentian Besar. No other resorts share this beach making it extra special. There is restricted boat access and a chance to see turtles right out the front. It’s a great place to relax and have a swim.

The facilities at this resort are maybe the best on any of the islands. There is a swimming pool, tennis courts, beach volleyball and soccer, kayaking, a day spa and more. You can even sing in a karaoke room.

There is a restaurant and cafe and you can have a drink on the beach (but note that there is no alcohol and the food is far from the best on the islands).

There are many room types including three different comfort levels depending on what you want to pay but all come with a fridge, kettle, air conditioning and balconies. If you can, pay extra to be beachfront – just stunning!

Unfortunately, the cheaper room types tend to be the oldest and some are badly in need of a renovation. This is definitely somewhere to pay extra for an upgraded room. The grounds and facilities in general also need more care and a facelift. But, the beach is always awesome!

Bubu Villas Review – Best Resort On Perhentian Kecil

Perhentian luxury resort

If you are looking for a 5 star resort on Perhentian Islands you will be disappointed – as they don’t exist. The next best thing, however, are the Bubu Villas.

This resort consists of spacious villas which are somewhat removed from the noise and bustle of Long Beach on Perhentian Kecil. They are well presented with thatched roofs, air conditioning, bathrobes, personal safe and tea and coffee making facilities.

Some villas have outdoor bathrooms and there are family villas available too. They are the best rooms on the islands, in my opinion.

There are not a ton of facilities beyond an outdoor restaurant and beach chairs. You do get a complimentary cocktail later in the day and breakfast is great though.

This resort is in a good spot if you want easy access to nightlife but it does come with the drawback that some villas have a noise problem thanks to surrounding bars. There can also be a fair amount of trash on the beach at times.

How To Get To Perhentian Islands

Getting to the Perhentian Islands can seem complicated because it’s always going to involve at least two forms of transport – but it’s really not.

perhentian islands singapore

There is no airport on the islands, so you need to catch a ferry from Kuala Besut. This means that the first part of your journey is to get to Kuala Besut which is a town to the south of Kota Bahru. You can look for buses directly to Kuala Besut here.

Otherwise, you can fly or catch a bus or train to Kota Bharu and then take a bus or taxi to Kuala Besut.

You can see ferry timetables and ticket prices to Perhentian Islands here.

You can also take a long-distance taxi from anywhere in peninsular Malaysia or Singapore. We can book a taxi for you with a safe and trustworthy local operator.

Getting Around Perhentian Islands

sea taxi Perhentian Islands

Transport is all about sea taxis. These are in many points with signs telling you the prices per person. Find any local around the sign or in a boat nearby, and they will either take you or find someone who will.

Prices are reasonable for one or two people but they would certainly add up for a family. I found prices somewhat static around the islands EXCEPT on Long Beach on Kecil. Head to the jetty at the end for the best prices.

Here are the prices from the end of Long Beach.

Best Time To Visit Perhentian Islands

The best time to visit Perhentian Islands is in the dry season from late March to early October. This part of Malaysia has a very heavy monsoon period and the islands basically shut down to tourists from late October to early March. It can be hard to get boats to the islands and most resorts and restaurants are shut.

The dry season is also the most popular time to visit and you should book ahead. The absolute best time is April to June so you are there during the dry season but there are also less tourists compared to the later months. However for divers, visibility is best in August and September.

We last visited in early October and found everything perfect.

Read our full guide to the best time to visit Perhentian Islands here.

Perhentian Island With Kids

playground on Perhentian Kecil

The Perhentian Islands are an excellent place to visit with kids. I went with mine! All the outdoor attractions are easy for kids to enjoy (and thus parents). They are also likely to enjoy the journey there, and everything on offer.

There is also a playground in the village by the waterfront on the way to the mosque.

Final Words

Sunset on West Beach on Perhentian Besar

This is a beautiful part of the world, and I highly recommend a visit! From the gorgeous beaches to exploring under-the-water to jungle trekking, they have a lot to offer people who love enjoying nature.

The best part is that everything is easy on these islands. They are well set up for tourists with many restaurants, hotels, shops and “taxis”. It’s definitely the easiest of the East Coast islands I have visited for independent travellers. However, the downside is that it is more built up.

Still, these things are relative, and it’s still a very relaxed, beautiful part of the world that we love to visit.

Add it to your bucket list and come as soon as you can!

My experience : Before getting on the practical details of this place, here are my views about Perhentian Islands. I went here for a long weekend. To be honest, I didn’t have high expectations because I’d seen the beaches in Malaysia and most of them aren’t up my standards. Moreover, a blogger friend had been here and she said it was, “Just okay.”

Imagine my amazement on actually seeing Perhentian Islands. The beaches are so beautiful — even the main beaches where the resorts are located. In some areas, you can snorkel right form the shore and see fishes and corals! I met another tourist who said she hadn’t been on a tour yet, but she’d gone snorkeling around the island and she’d seen turtles, manta rays, and various fishes.

In my opinion, Perhentian Islands is one of the most beautiful places in Malaysia — you can even say, in Southeast Asia.

Perhentian Kecil is the best option for budget travelers. It has two main beaches — Long Beach and Coral Bay .

Long Beach is a 1-kilometer stretch of beach that houses most of the island’s budget accommodations, restaurants and bar, and dive shops. At night, it offers nightlife where you can party or meet fellow travelers.

Coral Bay is located on the quieter part of Perhentian Kecil. Stay here if you want to keep your trip within the budget but without the party scenes.

Coral Bay in Perhentian Islands

Meanwhile, Perhentian Besar is ideal for families and couples. It offers more comfortable accommodations, although campsites and hostels are also available.

Perhentian Kecil and Perhentian Besar are located close to each other. There are taxi boats running back and forth between these islands all day.

How to get to Perhentian Islands

Kuala Besut is the gateway to Perhentian Islands. You need to get to Kuala Besut jetty for the fast boats to either Perhentian Kecil or Perhentian Besar.

From Kuala Lumpur, there are several ways to get to Kuala Besut.

From Kuala Lumpur, hop on a bus bound for Kuala Besut (duration: 8-9 hours, price: about RM46). These buses are limited though, so if you’re going on a long weekend, make sure to book a month in advance to ensure you can get seats.

From the Kuala Besut bus terminal, walk for 5-10 minutes to the jetty.

My experience : I had booked for a long weekend to Perhentian Islands. Unfortunately, a full 3 weeks before the date, all TBS-Kuala Besut tickets were sold out so I booked for a TBS-Kota Bharu instead and then took a taxi from there. The taxi rate is the same as Grab’s.

For the return trip, I was lucky to chance upon the last seat direct from Kuala Besut to TBS.

Kota Bharu is the closest province to Kuala Besut.

  • Ride a bus to Kota Bharu (8 hours, RM44). From Kota Bharu Bus Terminal, transfer to a CityLiner bus to Kuala Besut (RM6, 1.5-2 hours). Schedule starts at 6:30AM and the bus departs every hour. Alternatively, you can also take a taxi or Grab (around RM70, 1 hour).
  • An alternative is to book a flight to Kota Bharu. From the airport, there are vans bound for Kuala Besut. Fare is RM25 and travel time is only 40 minutes. You can also take a taxi or Grab (RM90-120).

This route is a last option, if you have failed to book transport to either Kuala Besut or Kota Bharu. Transport options are not as frequent as that in Kota Bharu.

  • Ride a bus to Kuala Terengganu (RM44, 7 hours). From the bus terminal, ride an SP Bumi bus to Kuala Besut.
  • An alternative is to book a flight to Kuala Terengganu. From the airport, there are buses bound for Kuala Besut, departing every hour starting at 7AM.

The Kuala Besut Jetty is the only jump-off point to Perhentian Islands. It is complete with accommodations, restaurants, and shops. It also has a parking lot where you can leave your car.

From the jetty, get a round-trip ticket to Perhentian Islands. Travel time is 1 hour. Round-trip fare is RM70 – but the price also fluctuates between RM60 and 80 depending on the season. Marine Park Fee is RM30 per person.

The boats depart hourly from 8AM to 5PM. The return boats have limited schedule (8AM, 12PM, and 4PM). During high season including holidays, boats go to the islands as early as 7AM and return to the mainland as late as 6PM.

For the return trip, make sure to inform your accommodation or directly text the fast boat company about what time and which beach to pick you up, a day before or in the morning of your departure.

Like other beach destinations in western Malaysia, Perhentian Islands is closed from November to February/March due to monsoon season and open from March to October only. Peak season is from June to August.

What to do in Perhentian Islands

There are many things to do in Perhentian Islands, from trekking to island hopping, snorkeling, and diving.

There are 2 tours offered in Perhentian Kecil: island hopping and snorkeling .

The snorkeling tours are the most popular. You’ll visit various locations where you can spot manta rays, sharks, sea turtles, and various fishes in the wild. I find it fascinating because I don’t see a lot of manta rays or sea turtles, but for the island locals they are regulars!

The snorkeling tour also has one of the most beautiful beaches I’d seen — the Romantic Beach. (I lived in the Philippines for years, so take my word for it.)

Snorkeling in Perhentian Islands, Malaysia

Meanwhile, the island hopping tour lets you see the smaller islands. Snorkel in Serengeh Island, swim in the crystal-clear turquoise water of Tukung Buring Island, and float away in Rawa Island. I prefer this tour even though it is shorter (4 hours vs 5 hours in snorkeling tour) because it has fewer people and the beaches are amazing.

Rawa Island, Perhentian Islands, Malaysia

Here are the details of the boat tours.

Rates may differ depending on season and boat operator. Rental for snorkel and lifevest rental is included. Some tour operators also include lunch. If not, there is a stopover in the fishing village where you can buy cheap meals (around RM5-10).

If you’re staying in a non-touristy part of Perhentian Island during low season, you might want to ask about the tours first. I stayed in Rainforest Beach which is a bit non-touristy even on a long weekend, and there weren’t enough guests to fill the quota of 4 people for the island hopping trip. It’s a good thing a local talked to the boatman directly and the latter organized for other tourists from another beach to join us.

You can also just snorkel right out on the beach. The best places to snorkel in Perhentian Kecil are along the edges of Long Beach and Coral Bay. In Perhentian Besar, go around the pier.

Snorkeling in Perhentian Islands, Malaysia

Perhentian Islands is one of the top diving locations in Malaysia, alongside Redang Island and Lang Tengah Island. It’s ideal for new or advanced divers and it’s one of the cheapest places to get PADI certified.

Some of the best diving sites in Perhentian include:

  • Sugar Wreck
  • Temple of the Sea
  • Tanjung Besi
  • Shark Point
  • Vietnamese Wreck

Blacktip sharks in Perhentian Besar

Most resorts offer kayaks for rent. This is a cheap way to explore the coastlines and can get your arms that much-needed workout.

Similar to Kapas Island , there are several beaches in Perhentian Kecil which are connected via pathways in the jungle. So you can allot a single afternoon to visit the beaches, which includes: Long Beach and Coral Bay, Romantic Beach, Rainforest Beach, Adam & Eve Beach, Turtle Bay, D’Lagoon, Mira Beach, and Petani Beach.

Rainforest Beach in Perhentian Kecil

Make sure to bring water with you because trekking can be tiring. You can also hire a water taxi to get from one beach to another.

There is a nesting population of sea turtles in Perhentian Islands. If you visit between June and September, you might be lucky to find sea green and hawksbill turtles laying eggs on undisturbed shores.

There is also a conservation organization for the turtles.

If you like going on a nature watch, just head to the jungle and follow the trails. Perhentian Islands is home to migratory birds. If you’re staying in Perhentian Besar, you can also see giant monitor lizards and monkeys.

View from trail in Perhentian Kecil

Head to the northside of Long Beach. Behind Bubu Resort, you can find a trail that leads to a windmill. The trek takes only around 30 minutes and offers a breathtaking view of the rugged coastlines of the island and the South China Sea.

Head to Coral Bay and get seated in one of the beachside restaurants where you can enjoy grilled seafood for reasonable fees.

Long Beach is notorious for its nightlife. Enjoy a nightly movie screening in Panorama or Matahari, watch fire dancing, and enjoy a taste of “Monkey Juice”, a home-made local rum.

For the bars, the most popular ones are OhLaLa Bar, Monkey Bar, and Beach Bar.

Where to stay in Perhentian Islands

You can find various kinds of accommodations, including campsites, hostels, and resorts in both islands. Here are the most recommended ones.

  • Perhentian View: Book via Agoda
  • Coral View Island Resort: Book via Agoda
  • Bubu Resort: Book via Agoda
  • Alunan resort: Book via Agoda
  • Mimpi Perhentian: Book via Agoda

I stayed in Orang Hutan Camping Site. This is a good option if you’re looking for a budget-friendly stay or into nature camping. Personally, I would have preferred staying in Long Beach where it’s easy to find restaurants and book tours but at that time everywhere else was booked.

Orang Hutan campsite, Perhentian Kecil, Malaysia

  • Pros : Quiet as it’s located in the jungle, minutes from Rainforest Beach, great food, welcoming & friendly staff. There are nightly gatherings where you can mingle with fellow travelers. Also, they have cats.
  • Cons : Requires a few minutes of trekking to reach campsite, there are mosquitoes in late afternoon.

You can book Orang Hutan Camping Site: via Agoda .

Here’s a sample 3 days itinerary in Perhentian Islands.

Day 0 – Take overnight bus from Kuala Lumpur to Kuala Besut

Day 1 – Arrival in Kuala Besut – Get to jetty and go on a fast boat to Perhentian Kecil – Check in accommodation – Explore the beaches

Day 2 – Snorkeling tour (long trip) – Windmill hike

Day 3 – Island hopping trip – Get the last boat back to the mainland – Overnight bus back to Kuala Lumpur

This is the itinerary that I made for my long-weekend trip. I prefer to take the bus because it’s cheaper and I can sleep during the commute.

To give you an idea, here’s a breakdown of estimated expenses.

So basically, RM500 for 3 days is a safe budget if you’re traveling alone.

Katerine, indeed you made a great article about Perhentian, I do confirm that it is worthy to visit it, even though my experience was only with Perhentian kecil. However, on the east coast of MY there are more gorgeous islands, e.g. Kapas island 🙂

Katherine Cortes

Yes. I’d been to Kapas Island also. Very nice beaches. 🙂

What makes the Perhentian Islands so special is that there are no roads at all. The island has only walking trails. There is no motorized transportation, creating the ultimate sense of peace and tranquility. Because the island is mostly covered in jungle, you cannot reach all places on foot. Many beaches are only accessible by boat. To get around, you can take a water taxi that can take you anywhere on Perhentian Kecil and Perhentian Besar. Most water taxis start operating at 09:30. If you want to be picked up from a beach after being dropped off, it’s a good idea to save the phone number of the water taxi.

What to Do on the Perhentian Islands?

A visit to the Perhentian Islands mainly involves snorkeling, diving, and exploring beautiful beaches, but there are other fun activities to enjoy. Below are some of the best tips for the Perhentian Islands.

Snorkeling and diving are the main reasons many travelers visit the Perhentian Islands. The underwater world is incredibly impressive, with numerous snorkeling and diving spots around the islands. You can find snorkel sets for rent at various shops on beaches like Long Beach and Coral Bay. When you walk into the sea from the beach with your snorkel gear, you can often see a lot of beautiful marine life. Take a snorkeling tour to visit the most stunning snorkeling spots on the Perhentian Islands. You’ll spend half a day exploring Fish Point, Turtle Point, Shark Point, Coral Garden, and Turtle Garden.

The most beautiful view of Perhentian Kecil can be admired from the Windmill Scenic Spot. The walk from Long Beach and Coral Bay to the viewpoint takes about thirty minutes. You can clearly see the hiking trail in the Maps.me app. The coordinates of the viewpoint in Maps.me are: 5.927248, 102.719879 . The area around the windmill isn’t particularly attractive, but when you walk around it, you can reach the viewpoint via wooden stairs.

Perhentian Besar is the largest island, and it also features some beautiful beaches. You can take a pleasant walk on the island, following winding jungle paths from Turtle Beach to Teluk Keke. These are the most beautiful beaches on Perhentian Besar in my opinion. The sand is pure white, the water is incredibly blue, the jungle surrounding the beach is stunning, and you might even encounter playful monkeys. Make sure to bring enough water because there are no restaurants or shops at either Turtle Beach or Teluk Keke. Along the way, you’ll come across a few restaurants, with Mama’s Restaurant being a recommended spot to grab a meal.

Note: To protect the turtles that lay their eggs on Turtle Beach, it’s prohibited to be on the beach after 18:00.

If you’re in the mood for a lively evening, head to Long Beach on Perhentian Kecil. The evening usually starts off calmly, but around 22:00, there are often fire shows. If it gets crowded enough, the beach chairs are pushed aside, and the music volume goes up. The real party usually starts around 23:00 or 00:00. The best parties are usually organized at Black Tip Bar or Joe’s Perhentian. Monkey Dives Perhentian and OhLaLa Divers dive schools also occasionally host parties.

One of the most enjoyable activities on the Perhentian Islands is kayaking! Rent a kayak from Coral Bay well before sunset and explore surrounding beaches like Romantic Beach . This beautiful beach can only be reached by water, making it feel like you’ve truly landed on a deserted island. Paddle back before the sun sets, and on the way, you can enjoy a front-row seat to the colorful sky spectacle. Of course, make sure to return to land before it gets dark.

The Most Beautiful Beaches of the Perhentian Islands

The Perhentian Islands are renowned for their pristine white beaches, crystal-clear waters, and laid-back atmosphere. Here are the most beautiful beaches I’ve put together for you.

Long Beach is located on the east side of Perhentian Kecil and is the most famous and bustling beach. You’ll find numerous beach bars and restaurants here. It’s not the ideal beach for swimming, but you can relax and order a cold drink. Kayaks are also available for rent, and you can even play a game of volleyball.

Coral Bay is situated on the west coast of Perhentian Kecil, just a ten-minute walk from Long Beach. It’s much quieter than Long Beach, but you can still find a few hotels and restaurants. It’s a great place for swimming, snorkeling, and renting kayaks to explore nearby beaches. Plus, the sunsets at Coral Bay are breathtaking!

From Coral Bay, you can walk to Mira Beach in about 25 minutes. The journey itself is already enjoyable as you walk through the jungle, along both marked and unmarked trails. The beach boasts white sand, blue waters, and palm trees.

This tiny beach on Perhentian Kecil is only accessible by water. It’s a little paradise with crystal-clear water and white sand that can be almost blinding when the sun is high in the sky. Chances are you’ll have the place all to yourself! Rent a kayak from Coral Bay and paddle to Romantic Beach or have a water taxi drop you off.

Turtle Beach is a charming little beach on Perhentian Besar where you can enjoy excellent snorkeling. If you look closely at the sand, you might even see traces of turtles that have laid their eggs here on the beach.

travel from thailand to perhentian islands

This beautiful beach on Perhentian Besar is absolutely my favorite. The massive rock formations divide the beach, with the right side appearing deserted. It feels like you’ve landed on an uninhabited island with hundreds of swaying palm trees. It’s incredibly stunning! The island has no amenities, but at Cosmic Divers, you can rent snorkeling gear and order drinks.

Unfortunately, the Perhentian Islands are not accessible year-round. From mid-October to mid-March, it’s the monsoon season, and nearly everything on the island is closed. From mid-March to mid-October, everything is open, and you can travel to the Perhentian Islands. July and August are the best months to visit the Perhentian Islands, but they are also the busiest months, although it’s never extremely crowded on the islands.

Ewan’s Restaurant – Here, you can order the tastiest smoothies on Perhentian Kecil. Besides smoothies, the menu primarily offers Asian dishes with plenty of vegetarian options. Crocodile Rock Bistro – About a ten-minute walk from Coral Bay, hidden in the jungle, you’ll find Crocodile Rock Bistro. You can enjoy delicious coffee and breakfast here in the morning. They are closed in the afternoon but open again for dinner or a pleasant drink in the evening. The World Cafe – This restaurant at Long Beach is perfect if you’re in the mood for a more upscale dining experience. The chef is Italian, and you can taste it in the food here. Pit Stop Station – This is a small restaurant on Long Beach where you can enjoy breakfast, lunch, and dinner. Nia Cafe – You’ll find this restaurant on Perhentian Besar. Here, you can dine with your feet in the sand. Order a flavorful curry with plenty of vegetables.

travel from thailand to perhentian islands

Most people choose to stay on Perhentian Kecil, as this island offers the most lively atmosphere, hotels, and restaurants. Particularly around Long Beach and Coral Bay, it’s bustling. Unfortunately, many hotels on the Perhentian Islands are expensive, and the affordable ones often have good reviews. It took some searching, but we found a few recommendations on Perhentian Kecil where you can enjoy a pleasant stay without breaking the bank.

On the beautiful Coral Bay, you’ll find Ombak Dive Resort Perhentian Island . It has a fantastic atmosphere, and every night is movie night! You can stay at a reasonable price in a comfortable double room with all the amenities you need, including effective air conditioning, a comfy bed, and a fridge. If you’re keen on diving on the Perhentian Islands, this is the right place. On the beautiful Mira Beach, you’ll find the stunning Keranji Beach Resort , and staying here gives you that ultimate island feeling. You’ll be sleeping in a wooden bungalow right on the beach! Keep in mind that it’s quite remote. If you want to treat yourself to a luxurious stay, Alunan Resort , located in the far south of Perhentian Kecil, is the place to be. You’ll stay in a spacious room with a breathtaking view of the crystal-clear sea. At this small private beach, you can snorkel beautifully.

The Perhentian Islands Travel Guide Malaysia

The Perhentian Islands are a group of islands of fine white sandy beaches, crystal clear blue water, and colorful corals. This region is the perfect place if you are looking to chill out, go diving, and snorkel while in Malaysia. This is the location you want to be at the end or beginning of your trip where you can simply relax and get away from the noise and big crowds.  This Perhentian Islands travel guide will help you plan and figure out the best things you can do during your visit here.

Book Your Boat to the Perhentians

Prebook a shared boat transfer from Kuala Besut to the Perhentians here. There are limited boats and seats, so make sure you book early!

There are five islands that makeup Perhentian Islands. The two main ones are Pulau Perhentian Kecil which means “Lesser Perhentian”, this island is smaller in size, (but not by much). The other island is called Pulau Perhentian Besar, the “Greater Perhentian” which is slightly larger in size. There are three other islands in the Perhentian Island Group that are uninhabited.

Visiting the Perhentian Islands tends to be more costly than traveling through the mainland and Sabah, however, the experience and what this destination can offer are worth every penny. Going on a trip here is still remarkably more affordable than visiting islands in Europe or North America.

Where are the Perhentians Islands

The Perhentian Islands are located northwest of Malaysia’s mainland, off the coast of Kampung Raja. The islands are almost at the border between Malaysia and Thailand and are usually visited when heading from Malaysia to Thailand, or Thailand to Malaysia.

We arrived in the Perhentian Islands from Singapore, and details of that route is here.

Our guide on going from Malaysia to Thailand, from Kota Bharu to Sungai Kolok is here.

Which Perhentian Island is Better?

When choosing which island to spend most of your time in Perhentian Islands, there are some things to consider. Although Besar and Kecil are just a boat ride away from one another, both islands offer a very different vibe. Deciding which island is better for you comes down to what kind of atmosphere you prefer.

Come to Perhentian Kecil for

Kecil is on the Banana Pancake Trail, which means it’s the main choice for backpackers and people traveling on more of a budget in Southeast Asia. This island is slightly smaller and the accommodation tends to be of slightly lower quality, but it has a large social scene and offers amazing nightlife. Although most locations are busy and loud, you can still find a nice and quiet place to read a book or chill out in Kecil.  We stayed on Perhentian Kecil and found quiet spots all over the island.

We didn’t book accommodation before arriving. Big Mistake. But this is what a lot of people do. They rock up, wander up and down the beach to find something, presumably eventually finding something, and then crash. And so we found ourselves, about noon only us and the mad dogs traipsing up and down the beach.

You can of course just turn up and wander up and down and find somewhere when you arrive. And wander around all the spots. Our experience?

The Matahari Chalet was too expensive, their 60 RM rooms have gone, and it was now 140 RM for an air-con room which isn’t that great. We head back along the beach and check out the Lemon Grass, which makes me shudder. Then the next door set of bungalows which has a large pool of stagnant water outside (which just makes me think of Malaria, Dengue, and getting bitten all night), and then head back down the beach trailed by the mad dogs.  (note the mad dogs are in my imagination and are related to the midday sun and Englishmen, we didn’t actually see, hear or spot any in our trip to the Perhentians…)

After more than an hour of wandering around, we found our home at the Panorama Chalets, where for 120 RM (US$28) a night we got a fan-cooled room, with a private bathroom and cold shower.  It’s grungy and it’s expensive but it’s the cheapest we could deal with. The others were just too horrid.

There’s electricity (most of the time), there’s the internet (some of the time), and our deal gave us a free meal each per night included in the cost. This place apparently serves the best pizzas on the island so I’m sold. Although the island is small, how hard can it be to have the best pizzas?

6 Top Things to do in the Perhentian Islands

There are a plethora of things to do in the Perhentian Islands – both exhilarating and energetic and chilled out. Most of the things to do in the Perhentians are water activities, but there are equally enough recreational activities to keep you busy while on land.

1. Go Diving in the Perhentian Islands

Diving is one thing that you should do while in Perhentian Islands. It’s one of the best locations in Southeast Asia to explore the underwater world with fewer people. Diving in Perhentian Islands is much more affordable than anywhere in the world while offering some of the best corals and various sea creatures that you can see. Whether you are looking to enjoy Southeast Asia’s diverse waters or thinking to get a diving certification, this place is just perfect.

We’d planned originally to dive here, but the remnants of my cold mean that it’s not going to happen, so we’re here to see what it’s like more than anything. If it’s paradise, then it’s similar to the  Gili Islands  in that paradise means the accommodation is basic and/or expensive. It means that paradise means you can get pizza, a burger, and a tuna sandwich and that there’s always a cold beer within reach, especially at sunset.

it’s partly rainy season here, so the clouds are ominous on an afternoon, and although we don’t get wet, it’s enough to have us heading for cover at the end of the day.

2. Take a Diving Certification Course

Diving is easily one of the most popular and exciting water activities. Diving means that you can swim with sea turtles and take awesome underwater photos. If you are not a licensed diver yet or planning to get certified, the Perhentian Islands are one of the top places to do it.

There are three kinds of diving you can do in the Perhentian Islands. There are diving activities for licensed divers, diving for those who plan to get a diving course certificate, and another for people who simply want to explore the marine world, aka tester dives or dive experiences.

By law, scuba diving doesn’t specifically need you to be licensed or have a certificate. This is a diving tour that you can do if you only want to go underwater and see the corals up close. It’s basically snorkeling with a tank and an expert diving instructor. The tour lasts for 2-3 hours and it includes the diving materials, boat, and guide.  You can reserve your place here , they are limited on numbers.

If you want to take it to the next level, go sign up for a PADI open water scuba diving course . This course lasts for 4 days where you will learn the basics and get yourself underwater using professional gear. At the end of the course, you will earn yourself a PADI certificate, which means you’ll get to dive some fabulous places around the world.  Malaysia is one of the cheapest places to get PADI certified, so if you’re thinking about it, book it now!

3. Snorkeling in the Perhentian Islands

Many beaches of the Perhentian Islands have lovely coral near the coastline and have such crystal clear water where you can simply put on a snorkeling mask or even just a pair of goggles and find different fish from the shore or near the beach.

You can also sign up at your accommodation for a half-day or full-day boat tour where you will be brought to specific places where many fishes, corals, and sea turtles can be found. Another option is to speak directly to local boatmen and hire them to take you to lovely snorkeling spots.  This inclusive deal in the Perhentians includes boat transfer transport from the mainland, sea views, private pools, and snorkeling,

perhentian kecil boat trips

Each place to stay and each dive shop offers snorkeling trips, so steeling ourselves against the memories of the Gili Islands, where 70 of us crowded onto a 40-person capacity boat, we sign up. How bad can it be?

It turns out to be incredible. There are five stops. There are 14 of us on the boat, and the boats are designed for perhaps 20. There are other boats, but not too many. We see multiple turtles, but don’t chase them as our guide did in the Gili’s. There are amazing amounts of brightly colored fish (our guide cum boatman brings bread and they feed from our hands).

We even get to see junior black-tipped sharks and that is amazing. Even if I had an underwater camera, (and this was another oh, we REALLY need one moment ) I wouldn’t have been quick enough to catch them. They are incredibly fast. Update: We now have three underwater cameras.

And while our final stop is on the beach on the big island, I stay in the water just enjoying the moment and the solitude.

4. Go Kayaking in the Perhentian Islands

There are locations in the Perhentian Islands where the water is calm and peaceful. Hire a kayak, and go from Coral Bay to Adam and Eve Beach. Perhentian Kecil has the best places for kayaking compared to the busier Perhentian Besar.  Arrange this with your accommodation.

5. Go Trekking in the Perhentian Islands

Apart from water activities, you can also enjoy some attractions on land. The most popular is jungle trekking where you can explore the jungles of Malaysia in Perhentian Besar. However, the paths are not well-maintained and often muddy. Remember to bring proper footwear and lots (and lots) of bug repellent. You can also book a tour which comes with a guide to help you get through the thick jungle.

6. Chill out in the Perhentians

Sometimes, the best thing you can do in Perhentian Islands is simply relax and chill out on the beach or by a pool. These islands have amazing beaches and cater to every kind of visitor. The best beaches in the Perhentian Islands are Long Beach and Coral Bay which are both located on Perhentian Kecil. These two beaches get very busy most time of the day and also in the evening and are great for vibrant nightlife.

On Perhentian Besar, Teluk Pauh and Tuna Bay are popular beaches. Tuna Bay is favored by families with young children. While Teluk Pauh and Flora Bay are two great locations for diving and snorkeling. You can also go to Turtle Beach to find turtles relaxing on the sand and around the coves.

If you are looking for a beach to chill out and away from the crowd, go to Teluk Keke in Besar and Isabelle Beach or Adam and Eve Beach in Kecil. For people couples wanting to be romantic, go to Romantic Beach.

How to Get to the Perhentian Islands

The easiest way to get to Perhentian Islands is to fly to Sultan Mahmud Airport in Kuala Terengganu, then take a bus, minivan, or taxi to Kuala Besut. The journey will take about an hour. From Kuala Besut, you have to get on a boat at Kuala Besut Jetty. The boat leaves every hour between 8 AM to 5 PM from Besut to Perhentian Islands.  You can book your boat transfer here

When leaving Perhentian Island, you will take the same boat back from Perhentian Islands to Besut. However, the boat only leaves 4 times a day, (8 AM, 10 AM, 12 NN, and 4 PM). It’s cheaper to buy your ticket online and then collect it at the jetty port than to buy it on the spot. You can also get a return ticket right away if you know when you want to leave Perhentian Island.

We traveled to the Perhentian Islands from Singapore and you can read about all the different options for getting to the Perhentian Islands here.

Travel Tips for Visiting the Perhentian Islands

To help you plan your visit much easier, here are some tips on what to expect while you are in the Perhentian Islands:

  • Cash is the king on the islands, all transactions are done with cash, and there are no ATMs available on the Perhentian Islands. Some fancier resorts might accept a bank card payment but contact your hotel first to confirm. Remember to bring plenty of cash, if you run out of cash, you will have to take a trip to Kuala Besut.  If you prefer to prebook and prepay your accommodation and transfer, then this is an awesome offering.
  • Alcohol is expensive in Perhentian Islands just like in most places in Malaysia, but more so, as it all has to be shipped in.  Literally. . If you plan to party and drink, bring enough cash with you.
  • Unfortunately, the water on the island is not safe to drink. You can buy bottled water but it’s very expensive. It’s best to bring a water bottle with a filter or you can go to places with an “automatic machine” where you can refill your bottle. You can also boil some water in your hotel room and use water purification tablets.  Read our guide to drinking tap water even when it’s not safe here.
  • Packing a headlamp/headtorch or flashlight with you is essential especially if you want to stay in Kecil. The electricity goes out from 11 PM until the morning, and the route back to your accommodation is usually not easy in the dark!
  • Many accommodations have mosquito nets installed in the room, but not all. Bringing a bug repellent is vital, you can also use plugin citronella or bring your own mosquito net to save yourself from bites!

Final Words on Going to the Perhentian Islands

The Perhentian Island group is Malaysia’s pride when it comes to the best islands in Southeast Asia. These islands offer spectacular diving spots, easy-to-find snorkeling locations, and a great balance between serenity and cool partying options. It’s a place where backpackers, couples, and family travelers can enjoy an amazing trip without spending too much.

The Perhentians were a pleasant diversion, the snorkeling was superb and the break from the reality that is budget travel in Asia was nice – no buses to deal with, no washing to do, I ate pizza (and it was good pizza) for two nights in a row and I drank 7RM cans of Chang beer sitting on the beach watching the storm clouds. It wasn’t paradise, but the more I see beach paradises, the more I think my paradise is a mountain somewhere with lakes, trees, and endless skies. And that means we either need to go back to Nepal . Enough dreaming.. next stop is up the coast, Kota Bharu , where World War II started in the Pacific, the site of the first Japanese landing.
