Duck confit burger - the duck truck

The “Trek” food truck festival is a nomadic event that takes place from May to September. This gastronomic caravan travels through Rotterdam, Maastricht, Utrecht, Nijmegen, ‘s-Hertogenbosch, Amsterdam, Tilburg, and Den Haag, bringing a delightful food experience to each location. Unlike the popular “Rollende Keukens” festival, “Trek” offered not only an array of nice dishes, but also provided a lot of seating areas and even games to keep visitors entertained.

We stared the day with some sushi from “I Love Sushi,” a well-known sushi shop with branches in several cities in the Netherlands. While the sushi was decent, it didn’t quite reach the level of being the best we’ve ever tasted.

A food truck that definetly won our hearts was the “Duck Truck,” known for its succulent duck burgers. We couldn’t resist ordering them twice because they were simply outstanding. The flavors were perfectly balanced, and the tender duck meat was perfectly complemented by the accompanying toppings. If you have the chance, don’t miss out on trying their duck burgers.

For seafood lovers, “Sea Salt Saloon” was a must-visit. We indulged in Zeeuwse and French oysters that were bursting with freshness and briny flavors. As a fish restaurant in Utrecht, they certainly lived up to their reputation for serving exceptional seafood dishes. If you appreciate oysters, this is a spot you shouldn’t overlook.

However, not all our culinary adventures were without a hiccup. We decided to try the bavette from “Proeven is Geloven,” which was advertised as a wagyu A5 steak. Despite confirming twice with the vendor, the texture of the meat was far from what we expected from wagyu. Although the bavette itself was decent, it did not meet the high standards associated with true wagyu beef.

To accompany our delicious food, we sampled some red wines. Our evening began with a bottle of Elevado Tinto, a blend of Syrah and Malbec. It had a rich and fruity profile that complemented our meal perfectly. However, it was the bottle of Epicuro Negroamaro, hailing from Puglia, Italy, that stole the show. This wine had a depth of flavors and a smoothness that left a lasting impression on our palates.

In conclusion, the “Trek” food truck festival in Utrecht offered an unforgettable culinary experience. With a variety of food trucks serving mouthwatering dishes, the festival catered to diverse tastes. From sushi and duck burgers to oysters and bavette, there was something for everyone. Despite a minor disappointment with the wagyu claim, the overall atmosphere and selection of food made the event a worthwhile visit. If you find yourself in Utrecht during the festival’s season, be sure to treat yourself to an evening of indulgence and gastronomic delights.

For the Love of Food Trucks: TREK Festival The Hague

Food Trucks seem to have entered the culinary world by a storm lately, but it seems the craze is here to stay… and now they’re also a ‘thing’ in The Netherlands. Food trucks weren’t permitted on the streets in The Netherlands for a long time and could only be found at some bigger markets, sporting events or music festivals. But recently, the law changed and food trucks are now free to become a culinary force in their own right.

The TREK Festival in The Netherlands is a free summer festival held in eight cities around the country and is centered around the best food trucks from local business owners. The word ‘trek’ in Dutch means ‘appetite’, and that’s exactly what you get as soon as you enter the festival grounds!

Besides food, drinks and snacks from a dozen stalls, there is also live music, theatre and cabaret for you to enjoy. For a small amount, you get a special TREK-glass at the entrance, made of environment-friendly hard-plastic, that will be rinsed and re-used every time you top up your drink at one of the stalls.

Enjoy the dozens of mobile kitchens at the cities centrally located city parks, which have been transformed into one big open-air restaurant. The Travel Tester went to explore the TREK Festival in Den Haag and investigated just why food trucks have become so popular these days.

To start off, here are three reasons why you’ll probably love a food truck festival as well:

1. Easy access to world food

These days, it’s never been easier to get access to dishes from far-away places, and at a food truck festival they’re conveniently gathered in one spot for you to enjoy. As each trailer specializes in a different cuisine, it’s just a matter of a few steps to make your way around the best selection of flavours from all around the world!

2. A place of creativity

Not only do food truck owners get to experiment with different variations of their popular dishes as well as the look of their unique kitchen on wheels, food truck festivals also bring together the best in local music and theatre acts, which add to the atmosphere of the event.

3. Fun for the whole family

The combination of music, entertainment and many different food options make a food truck festival a great place for families. There sure is something to like for everyone! These type of festivals are perfect for visiting with young children, who don’t always like to stay seated at a sit-down restaurant. The older kids can walk around on their own and have fun with their friends while the parents get to relax at the same time.

The starships of the future won’t look anything like Star Trek’s Enterprise

Ever fantasize what it might be like to live life hurtling through deep space meet the space systems researcher who prototypes interstellar habitats that are out of this world..

Angelo Vermeulen has lived on Mars. Well, he’s lived in a NASA-funded simulation of a Mars mission: sealed into a habitat on Hawaii’s Mauna Loa volcano with five other crew members for 120 days to collect data on how to feed humans on Mars, and what it’s like to live in isolation. But Vermeulen’s research isn’t only bound to the Red Planet. Most of the time, the space systems researcher, biologist and artist is creating new concepts for designing starships—vehicles that can sustain human life during space travel.

For most of us, “starship” pretty much makes the brain leap to science fiction starships of television and film — Star Trek’s Enterprise , or Star Wars’ Star Destroyers. But for Vermeulen, such stark, rigid and militaristic approaches won’t be what ultimately works in reality. Instead, his designs take an approach that integrates technological, biological and social systems in such a way that they all grow and evolve together to meet the needs of its inhabitants indefinitely.

Example? For one, Vermeulen is creating a computer simulation for an asteroid starship with a student team at Delft University of Technology. This hypothetical starship can mine organic materials and metals from asteroids and take them on board to expand the architecture of the ship using 3D printing. “Moreover, if you put the asteroid at the front of the ship, it also doubles as an ablative shield,” says Vermeulen, “protecting the crew and the internal ecosystem against damaging impacts.”

When Vermeulen isn’t at the university drawing board, he’s sharing his vision here back on Earth—leading community-based builds of starship prototypes in an art project called Seeker. Why get ordinary citizens to construct starships? Vermeulen believes that everyone—not just a scientific or academic elite—should participate in imagining and building humanity’s collective future, not only for the benefit of space exploration but for life on our own planet.

“Seeker is explicitly not embracing a doomsday scenario where Earth is destroyed and humanity has to build an ark to escape,” Vermeulen says. “On the contrary. The goal is to reimagine how we integrate ecological, technological and social systems by taking a step back from Earth. This approach lets participants question assumptions and stereotypes, radically rethink things, and let imagination flow freely. And the lessons we learn can be applied both in deep space and back on Earth.” Sound intriguing? Here’s a peek at Seeker projects so far.

What you need to build a starship

Once a location and a collaborating local group is identified—such as an arts group or academic institution—the process begins with spreading the word in the larger community to build interest. As a group forms, it starts sharing ideas online and collecting materials—usually recycled—often communicating over months. Once on site, the group starts building, initial concepts and materials in hand. The build typically takes at least four weeks, with participants joining in as intensely as their schedules allow. “We typically work with an end date in mind, such as an exhibition opening event where Seekers’ creators can celebrate their starship prototype and answer questions for the community at large,” says Vermeulen.

The very first Seeker (Seeker [DV¹], pictured above) was built inside the Bergkerk church in Deventer, Netherlands. “It was created with a mixed group consisting mostly of engineers and local artists,” says Vermeulen. “You can see that this project is still a tribute to more conventional ideas about starships, with its geometric design and landing gear. Nevertheless, it kick-started everything, and has been used as a reference for subsequent builds.”

A starship for the people of Earth

So what does a typical Seeker starship look like? “Seeker is co-created with local communities, and in every location, the community looks different—so every resulting Seeker project looks different,” says Vermeulen. “It’s always a mix of people with different backgrounds, skills, beliefs and ages. For example, we worked with an engineering company, artists, and architecture students in the Netherlands, and cultural activists from a range of grassroots organizations in Slovenia. Our participants usually range from teenagers to people over 60. We use a co-creation approach, where everyone has a say. We also design from the bottom-up as much as possible: in other words, starships are created without a pre-defined plan, but organically and gradually develop over time, according to the interests of the community.”

Sometimes Seeker projects reuse parts of a previous Seeker, which get hacked and redesigned. “For example, in this second Seeker project in Hasselt, the community retained the outer architecture of a previous build, but overhauled the interior from a different design perspective,” says Vermeulen.

Closed-loop ecosystems and eating bugs

While every Seeker project is unique, certain principles are always addressed, such as core sustainability. “One of the things we always discuss is zero waste: every molecule has to be reused. We often discuss the need to create an onboard ecosystem that reuses all human waste as nutrients for bacteria, which in turn creates food for plants, and plants for astronauts in a never-ending loop.” Of course, given the time and budget limits of Seeker builds, it’s not possible to fully build such systems, but “we hack together what we can,” says Vermeulen. For example, in the first image above, edible plants are being grown in a vertical garden, nourished by nearby fish tanks in an aquaponic system. “We also raised and ate insects for animal protein,” says Vermeulen.

Speaking of hacking, the Seeker project pictured above, created with students at the Eindhoven University of Technology, repurposed secondhand caravans to create a fictional space architecture—great for creating modular habitats. “Space architecture is by modular by nature,” says Vermeulen. “Think of the International Space Station. Working with modules lets you gradually expand an architectural structure over time. It also makes it easier to control a larger structure (e.g., areas can be shut off), increasing safety.”

Cyberpunk starships

Later, the Eindhoven Seeker was built out with additional caravans for the GOGBOT art, design, science and technology festival in Enschede, the Netherlands. (See image, top.) “Once we added scaffolding and colored fluorescent lighting, it resulted in a monumental construction with a hint of cyberpunk,” says Vermeulen. “We carried out an isolation mission during this festival—and the crew members even donned customized spacesuits and left the starship in an EVA (extravehicular activity)!”

Pre-hearsing life in deep space

It’s one thing to build a hypothetical starship—it’s another to actually try living in it. “From the second version of Seeker onward, we started organizing actual isolation missions, like pre-hearsals of the future,” says Vermeulen. “Doing this totally changes the dynamic of the design process — it gives the work a performative quality. For Seeker in Ljubljana, Slovenia, we tested our speculative construction by locking ourselves up for four days with six team members,” he says. “We stayed inside the art work in the museum, even at night after the guards had left.”

Isolation missions are part of Vermeulen’s interest in possible social structures and governance for interstellar communities—particularly distributed and self-organized decision making as opposed to traditional military-style command. “During the isolation mission in Ljubljana, we had a crew member who’d served in the Yugoslav army during the war. As we discussed how military command works, the ex-soldier shared his experiences with us, and it was chilling,” says Vermeulen. “He was very much against military structure because it psychologically discourages people from connecting. The main goal, he said, is to make sure a commander can give orders to individuals because communities are threatening: they are strong, can voice an opinion and rise up.”

“Personally, this was by far the most moving encounter I’ve had during Seeker so far,” he says. “It shows how as we try to script and enact a speculative future, we discover new insights from the past.”

Seekers of the future, unite!

It doesn’t stop here. Seeker is an ongoing, long-term project initiated by SEAD—Space Ecologies Art and Design—an international network of individuals working in art, science, engineering and advocacy co-founded by Vermeulen in 2009, whose goal is to reshape the future through critical reflection and hands-on experimentation. And because Seeker is an open source project, anyone who is interested in setting up their own build or joining upcoming builds is welcome.

“Seeker projects in preproduction include one in the Atacama desert, Chile, in association with Factoría GKo in Santiago, one in Prishtina, Kosovo, in collaboration with local organizations such as Prishtina Hackerspace, and one more in Swaziland, in collaboration with the Berlin-based Agora Collective,” says Vermeulen.

And who should apply? “I’m interested in people willing to engage the future head on, people who are ready to work not just from the perspective of their own fields but from within a huge mix of disciplines and experiences. That’s what we need to build an inclusive diversity of futures,” says Vermeulen. “This is an idea that Seeker has made me consider a lot: there is no one single way to build a better future. We’re all still stuck in the modernist idea of looking for a universal solution. But maybe that doesn’t exist. Instead we should foster multiple futures, and allow them exist in parallel—an ever-evolving ecosystem of futures.”

The TED Fellows program hand-picks young innovators from around the world to raise international awareness of their work and maximize their impact.

Believe it or not, in summer Moscow usually gets rather hot. It’s also the season when the city is fully awake, with more events happening than at any other time of the year. Almost every weekend a new market, exhibition or festival takes place, making it pretty hard to choose which one to attend.

Of course, the highlight of this summer in the Russian capital will be the celebration of football, as Moscow gets ready to host the 2018 FIFA World Cup (from 14 June to 15 July) along with 10 other cities across the country. Nevertheless, over the years some big annual events have become an integral – and fun – part of Moscow’s summer culture. Here are our top picks.

Usadba Jazz at Arkhangelskoe

This iconic open-air jazz festival has been taking place in Moscow for over a decade, making it one of the city’s favourite outdoor events. The location is always the same – the gorgeous 19th-century  Arkhangelskoe Estate and its surroundings. Apart from some great classical and modern jazz, blues, funk, soul and world music, there’s a new theme each year: in 2017 it was ecology, introducing some local eco-designers and culinary artists to jazz-loving Muscovites.

Dates: 2–3 June 2018

Red Square Book Fest

This year Moscow’s annual book festival will be taking over the historic Red Square for the fourth time. The event celebrates the reading culture, introduces the best local publishing houses, and allows visitors to purchase books, attend masterclasses and listen to some well-known modern Russian writers. The program covers several themes, including fiction, non-fiction, ebooks, children’s and educational literature, antique and secondhand books, as well as Russian regions.  Famous Russian museums present their publishing projects and catalogues, and there are live concerts and performances throughout the festival.

Dates: 3–6 June 2018

Moscow Flower Show

Who knew Moscow could be a rose? Last year a new sort of rose was created just to celebrate the 870th anniversary of the Russian capital. This international garden festival is a paradise for the admirers of landscape design and all things green and blooming. Both recognised and up-and-coming landscape designers present their works and compete for the main prize, awarded by an international jury. And visitors get a chance to release their inner flower child.

Dates: 29 June–8 July 2018

Taste of Moscow

This international food festival   has been around for a long time, covering 19 cities of the world and gaining huge popularity in Moscow. The city’s 30 best restaurants will take part in the program this year, offering visitors their most renowned dishes and products. You can treat yourself to delicacies from one of the exclusive menus created specifically for the festival, attend degustations or learn how to cook from a professional chef. The interactive program will also include concerts, masterclasses, pop-up performances and children’s activities.

Much loved by both locals and visitors to the city, the annual Park Live rock festival has achieved international status in its six years of existence, treating the fans with performances from world-famous and local rock stars. Hosting Muse in 2015 has been the highlight in the festival’s history, while Red Hot Chili Peppers, Lana Del Rey, Limp Bizkit and System of a Down have also headlined. In 2018 revellers will have a chance to see David Guetta, Gorillaz and Massive Attack at the vibrant Gorky Park  in the heart of the city.

Dates: 27–29 July 2018

Afisha Picnic

Moscow’s biggest open-air festival is a summer rave for food and music lovers. Organized by Afisha magazine, it’s been expanding year on year, eventually moving from concert halls and stadiums to the vast Kolomenskoe Museum-Reserve , a former royal estate and a Unesco World Heritage Site by the Moscow River. The organisers make sure there’s lots going on, so apart from multiple music stages you can find food stalls with local products, a designers’ market, gaming and lecture areas – all with a strict no-alcohol policy.

Times and Epochs

The ultimate historical festival in Russia expands with each passing year, taking over Moscow parks, recreational areas and some of the main streets. It brings together the best from the world of historical re-enactment, boasting more than 6000 geeky participants in 2017 (many of them from abroad). Soldiers, merchants, craftsmen, musicians all walk the streets in traditional costumes, performing or teaching the arts, crafts and games of the past. Best of all, the festival is focused on getting the audience involved in the lifestyles of different eras, from the Stone Age to the Soviet times.

Dates: 10–22 August 2018

Moscow City Day

Moscow turned 870 in 2017, and to celebrate the occasion, the city administration decided to host a 10-day festival under the slogan ‘Moscow is a city where history is being made’. With Russian avant-garde the main theme, dozens of events, lectures, performances and street markets celebrated the history of the capital as well as its prominent inhabitants. Plenty of music, food and modern art is always to be expected on the city streets during this time. Don’t miss the magnificent fireworks.

  • Several more intriguing sci-fi releases are slated for the remainder of the year, including some from well-known authors.
  • The upcoming sci-fi releases explore themes like climate change, artificial intelligence, and more.

Several great sci-fi books have already hit shelves in 2024, and there are more exciting releases on the horizon — some even rivaling the upcoming fantasy books in terms of premise and the hype surrounding their debuts. Whether it's in reference to the best sci-fi movies or the best books in the genre, this type of storytelling has the capacity to explore the future and what could become of humanity. Sci-fi narratives also look at how technology can evolve over time, as well as how the environment might progress in relationship to living things.

Needless to say, sci-fi stories offer necessary explorations of relevant topics — though some of them also lean into more outlandish themes, separating themselves enough from reality to deliver on the escapism as well. It's no wonder sci-fi is such a popular genre, and the continued publication of books in this category speaks to its success. Some great sci-fi novels, like Micaiah Johnson's Those Beyond the Wall and S.A. Barnes' Ghost Station, have already hit shelves in 2024. More are slated to arrive during the remainder of the year, and they promise to deliver on all the elements that make sci-fi great.

11 Most Anticipated Thriller Books Coming Out The Rest Of 2024

7 archangels of funk by andrea hairston, release date: may 7, 2024.

Andrea Hairston's Archangels of Funk is getting positive reviews ahead of its May 2024 release, and it's one of the sci-fi books that will tackle a dystopian setting that feels all too possible. Set after the Water Wars have rocked the world, Archangels of Funk will follow Cinnamon, who is losing hope in making this world a better place. Even her Next World Festival isn't stopping hopelessness from consuming her. But with her elders insisting she go through with the event, Cinnamon must determine how to move forward — even with interference from groups like the nostalgia militia and Darknet Lords.

It's always fascinating to see an author's take on the future, even if it's a bit bleak. But Hairston's 2024 release sounds like it contains glimmers of hope as well, making it an ideal read for anyone giving into despair. The Water Wars is a concept often discussed, and Archangels of Funk is digging into that possibility and showing what humanity could look like on the other side. It's well worth picking up because of that premise alone, though every element of Cinnamon's story sounds entertaining and gripping.

6 The Ministry Of Time By Kaliane Bradley

The Ministry of Time by Kaliane Bradley is another exciting sci-fi release slated for May 2024, as it will combine time travel with a spy narrative and a love story. Set in a not-so-distant future, The Ministry of Time follows a civil servant who's asked to determine if time travel is possible without destroying the traveler's body — and the space-time continuum. She does this by working with an expat from the 1840s, who she's tasked with monitoring. However, their close living quarters soon turn their professional dynamic into something more.

A fun romp that combines multiple genres, The Ministry of Time sounds like a can't-miss sci-fi release of 2024.

A fun romp that combines multiple genres, The Ministry of Time sounds like a can't-miss sci-fi release of 2024 . It's far less dystopian than many of the other novels hitting shelves, so it's perfect for anyone looking for a more lighthearted sci-fi read. Its positive reviews also bode well, promising an all-around good time for those picking this up. Its cover is also eye-grabbing — and while that shouldn't be the only factor in picking up a new release, it certainly does help the book's case.

5 Lost Ark Dreaming by Suyi Davies Okungbowa

Release date: may 21, 2024.

Lost Ark Dreaming takes place in a world ravaged by climate change, and Suyi Davies' release will explore how class status will affect the impact of environmental disaster on human beings . Set decades after the Atlantic Ocean rose to dangerous levels, Lost Ark Dreaming will follow the survivors in West Africa, all of whom are living in towers that were originally built for unrelated reasons. The wealthy control everyone else from the top of these towers, leaving those less fortunate to survive on the partly submerged levels of these structures. And they aren't the only people scorned by the elite.

Many people were left to tragic fates when the ocean began to rise, and some are reawakened in Lost Ark Dreaming. These beings are out for revenge against the people who deemed them unworthy of survival. Those living in the towers will need to come together to survive their vengeance and the ever-threatening environment. They are the last hope for humanity, meaning the stakes will be higher than ever in Okungbowa's must-read 2024 release .

4 Service Model by Adrian Tchaikovsky

Release date: june 4, 2024.

Adrian Tchaikovsky's Service Model also depends on the premise of humanity dying , but in this book, their doom comes at the hands of robots and artificial intelligence. Such creations have taken over the labor market when Service Model opens. When one robot gets the idea to murder its owner, it kicks off a high-stakes narrative that feels all too relevant to real-life conversations surrounding AI. After the robot kills its owner, it learns more about the world it resides in. This pushes the human/robot hierarchy to crumble, with the technology once meant for humans' well-being now having the opposite impact.

Service Model arrives at an interesting time for readers, as the sci-fi novel is poised to discuss important topics related to technological advancements.

Needless to say, Service Model arrives at an interesting time for readers, as the sci-fi novel is poised to discuss important topics related to technological advancements. It's also an ideal read for anyone looking for a thrilling sci-fi narrative with plenty of action and political intrigue. Tchaikovsky's Children of Time series proved a gripping addition to the sci-fi landscape, and the author's latest book promises to be just as compelling. It's a novel to keep an eye out for during the summer 2024 release season.

3 Rogue Sequence By Zac Topping

Release date: june 11, 2024.

Zac Topping's Rogue Sequence hits shelves this June , and it takes a bleak stance on the future of humanity — much like many of the other books on this list. Set in the year 2091, Rogue Sequence takes place in a world where independent contract companies are creating " genetically modified soldiers. " The end result can only be negative, especially with these organizations pawning their soldiers off to anyone offering enough money. Rogue Sequence will follow Ander Rade, one of the soldiers in question, as he's captured and forced into a life very different from the one he was built for.

And Rade's life changes yet again when the Genetic Compliance Department of the United American Provinces shows up and asks for a favor. With the organization declaring his kind a threat, he's tasked with hunting his own. This will gain him freedom, but it also puts Rade in an increasingly complicated situation. Needless to say, his story sounds like a gripping one that readers won't be able to put down. It's undoubtedly one of the most interesting sci-fi books hitting shelves in 2024 , and it's an ideal choice for anyone who enjoys a bit of politics in their sci-fi stories.

2 Gravity Lost By L.M. Sagas

Release date: july 23, 2024.

Gravity Lost is the second installment in L.M. Sagas' Ambit's Run series, and it promises to raise the stakes and expand on the story told in Cascade Failure . Pitched for fans of Guardians of the Galaxy, Gravity Lost will see the Ambit gang handing Isaiah Drestyn over to the Union. Unfortunately, this doesn't end their adventure in the way they think it will. With so many powerful people seeking Drestyn, the Ambit crew is forced to break him out and uncover some of his greatest secrets. It's for their own good, and its importance might even go beyond that.

Gravity Lost sounds like a compelling character study, especially for readers who enjoyed Cascade Failure.

Even if retrieving Drestyn is for the best, the members of the Ambit crew will have significant obstacles to overcome in this sequel . According to its synopsis, these challenges could force them to take a hard look at themselves and the people around them. Overall, Gravity Lost sounds like a compelling character study, especially for readers who enjoyed Cascade Failure. The opportunity to dig deeper into these characters is exciting, and it will be a pleasure to spend more time in Sagas' thrilling sci-fi world.

1 The Mercy Of The Gods By James S.A. Corey

Release date: august 6, 2024.

The sci-fi duo that goes by the name James S.A. Corey brought readers The Expanse, and now they're kicking off another series with The Mercy of the Gods . The Mercy of the Gods will follow The Carryx, described in the synopsis as " part empire, part hive, " as they contend with a massive threat — one that may force them to work alongside the humans residing on the planet Anjiin in order to survive. of course, the Carryx only takes the smartest humans living there, wiping out the rest. And The Mercy of the Gods follows Dafyd, who's chosen by The Carryx to help.

Dafyd finds himself in the middle of a confrontation that goes far beyond anything he knows, and the humans chosen alongside him soon realize that they'll need to manipulate The Carryx to survive. With plenty of political intrigue, The Mercy of the Gods sounds poised to keep readers on edge from start to finish. Given who the authors are, readers can expect this to be one of the best sci-fi books of the year — and surely one of the most anticipated. It could kick off a series on par with The Expanse . Even if it doesn't, it still sounds more than worthwhile.

An exasperated Bill Maher , notorious for not having his own children, asked on Friday’s ‘Real Time’ why he is the one who is always left trying to defend them.

In his “New Rules” editorial, Maher trained his guns on the shocking Max documentary Quiet on Set , which detailed what the past young stars went through on the Nick sets. “OMG,” was Maher’s opening salvo.

Bill maher rounds up the usual suspects in 'real time' focus on phones and woke.

The documentary is the talk of the town in Los Angeles, Maher said, but pointed out that Florida Governor Ron DeSantis was derided when he was saying the same things about Disney’s actions.

He cited a famous Willie Sutton quote about robbing banks “because that’s where the money is.” The reason we find pedophiles in certain corners of show business, Maher said, is because “That’s where the kids are.” He noted “DeSantis wasn’t wrong,” and expressed disgust that the left “will support child f**king if the wrong party calls it out.”

Case in point, he noted how Brian Peck was rehired to work on a children’s series after serving 16 months for abuse. “For pedophiles in Hollywood, it’s a small world after all,” he said.

Maher also called out Instagram moms pimping young daughters and Drag Queen Story hours. “Not that there’s anything wrong with being a drag queen,” he said. “But lets admit it’s more for the Queen than the kid.”

Maher said he can’t pretend that certain things are cool.

“Wokeness is not an extension of liberalism any more. It’s taking something so far that it’s the opposite.” Teaching kids not to hate is fine, “but at a certain point, inclusion becomes promotion.”

Children are “gullible morons who just want to please grownups,” Maher said. Thus, endless talking about gender to six-year-olds is “what law enforcement calls entrapment.” It’s suggesting someone into something they wouldn’t do, he said, “and if you think that’s not happening, you haven’t seen any TikTok videos.”

“Maybe we should think abut giving kids a break from our culture wars for a minute,” Maher concluded. “Or at least until the election is over.”

Earlier, Maher had a one-on-one interview with fitness guru Jillian Michaels , who warned of the horrors of Ozempic weight-loss use.

“Diet and exercise is the only way” to lose weight, she said, calling the drug use “a devil’s bargain.” She said to look at the warnings on the box, which has a laundry list of side effects that range from nausea to kidney failure and vision loss. “They are hacking your biochemistry,” she said, and leading to “yo-yo dieting on crack.”

Maher’s panel discussion had Jon Meacham , Pulitzer Prize-winning historian and author of The Call to Serve: The Life of an American President, George Herbert Walker Bush ,” and  Jane Ferguson , foreign correspondent for PBS NewsHour,  The New Yorker  contributor, and author of No Ordinary Assignment.

They talked about the New York Trump Trial and the NPR reporter who resigned this week because of his distaste at the partisan politics of his newsroom.

Maher had the best line about NPR, calling its CEO Kathryn Maher (no relation), “a Portlandia character. She’s the kind of white woman who would say she’s Beyoncé spirit animal.”

Music + concerts, music + concerts | coachella 2024: fans react to the expanded and changed festival grounds, fans share their thoughts and feelings on the expansion and move of the beloved sahara tent at this years coachella valley music and arts festival..

trek festival enschede

At the 2024 Coachella Valley Music Festival , attendees were met with a wave of excitement as they entered the Empire Polo Club grounds in Indio.

However, one immediate change caught the eye of seasoned festival-goers: the Sahara Tent , a longstanding home of electronic dance music and rap acts, had shifted its location. Positioned south of its previous spot, the tent now found itself adjacent to the newly unveiled Quasar stage , a mark in Coachella’s evolving musical landscape.

This relocation, prompted by the festival’s commitment to accommodating the burgeoning demand for house and EDM acts, set the stage for a lengthy roster that included Ice Spice, Skepta, Dom Dolla, Bizarrap, Purple Disco Machine, Grimes, Le Sserafim, Spinall, and John Summit, among others.

The Sahara Tent underwent renovations back in December, now boasting a sturdy steel structure stretching up to 320 feet long. Enhanced with underground footings, the revamped tent offers increased stability and accommodates more fans. The upgraded layout also facilitates better stage production so that artists can bring whatever they need to the roomy stage.

Yet, the new layout posed challenges for attendees like Elizabeth Row and friend Sasha Lu, who traveled from New York City to attend their fifth consecutive Coachella. They found that navigating from the Sahara Tent to the Main Stage was more strenuous than in previous years, making it harder on their feet — strapped in stylish cowgirl boots — as it was a 15-minute trek between the two venues.

“We saw on Instagram awhile back that the Sahara Tent would be moving, and it’s actually one of our favorite tents and spots to go to as we usually prefer to see EDM acts, but this year it just feels a bit more challenging since its actually taking us longer to get to the Main Stage area. We’ve even had to miss a few acts this year because it just didn’t make sense for us to keep walking back and forth, and we didn’t have this problem before,” Row shared while sprawled out on the grass hill area, waiting for Ice Spice to play.

Row and Lu share the same sentiment, feeling that the long walk holds back their ability to catch every festival act they planned to see. On the other hand, Lu notes that the new setup is nice since there’s room to actually squeeze into the tent, unlike years past when fans were packed like sardines into the tight space. Not to mention a new grass hill area for folks to relax, lay and catch sets from afar.

The expansion also holds a new walking path dubbed Sahara Express Walkway that provides a safe route for fans to move between the tent, the grass hill area and the Sahara Food section. It also offers a convenient vantage point for catching glimpses of performances at the new Quasar stage while grabbing a bite to eat or simply taking a break from the festival’s hustle and bustle.

On the other hand, Billy Larga, an attendee from San Francisco, found the layout to be perfectly fine. He noted that the extended walk wasn’t a significant issue for him and expressed his pleasure at how well the new setup functioned.

“At first, I was a little skeptical of how the new grounds and Sahara Tent would play out this year since I knew everything was moving, but I think it’s great. It works,” Larga said. “I mean, it’s bigger, so I don’t feel like I’m fighting my way in the tent just to catch an artist, which was always the case for me the past few years, and at times, I had just to walk away because it wasn’t worth it. I haven’t found myself doing that once this time.”

Other fans didn’t even seem to notice the change whatsoever.

“I’m not the hugest EDM or rap fan, so I rarely go to the Sahara Tent, and I’ve been coming for the past decade,” Billy Henderson, a Los Angeles native and avid Coachella fan who’s been attending since 20120, shared while sipping on a lemonade by the food market area.

“I think it works for a lot of fans who are EDM or rap heads. For others who just want to catch a set or two at that stage, it just doesn’t,” continued Henderson. “The walk is pretty far this year, so for me, it’s a no-go. I think they really wanted to do this for the people who love that side of the grounds, so it’s a win for them. At this point, Coachella is just growing every year, I would expect something else to move again next year, too.”
