Steve Martin and Martin Short 's "You Won't Believe What They Look Like Today!" is a show that redefines the form in unexpected and profound ways, from two of the funniest, most influential, and acclaimed talents of the past century. Their humor is often subversive, but it is always a joyous self-deprecating romp from two comedy masters driven to make each other laugh as much as the audience. The jokes come at you at a rapid-fire pace with little set-up and big punch lines as they mock Hollywood and the fickle nature of celebrity, but the comedy truly soars when they lovingly (and relentlessly) roast each other. Martin and Short's chemistry and timing on stage reflects a friendship forged over three decades which developed when they met for the first time on the set of the 1986 film "Three Amigos." These two titans of comedy have been touring together since 2015, when they launched their first live show entitled "A Very Stupid Conversation."

Steve Martin, Martin Short keep Pittsburgh crowd laughing

Opening night was a hit for Steve Martin and Martin Short at the Benedum Center.

PITTSBURGH -- The laughter started Wednesday long before the two comedy greats took the stage.

First a big video screen welcomed a full-house Benedum Center to the Steve Martin and Martin Short show ... before revealing that contractual obligations also require the show to be called the Martin Short and Steve Martin show.

Egos, you know.

Then came a reel of career-spanning clips that had audience members cheering and chuckling at familiar faces like Ed Grimley and Jiminy Glick. Wild and Crazy guy Georg Festrunk, and a King Tut tribute singer. From excitable wedding planner Franck to Martin with a fake arrow through his head, the beloved gags and characters kept coming, and the crowd ate it up.

The laughter kept rolling throughout a solidly entertaining two-hour performance of wisecracks, music, Q&A and storytelling.

"We look forward to performing for your cellphones," Martin joked, though blessedly this was a night where audience members stayed off their mobile devices, and focused entirely on the A-list entertainers.

Martin took the stage first, looking great at 71. Though as the soon-to-follow Short would joke, Steve's got an advantage in the looks department, since his appearance hasn't changed in 40 years.

Friends for 32 years, Martin and Short would barb and zing each other frequently throughout their show, always striking the perfect comedic depth.

Short poked fun at Martin's pale complexion with lines like "You look like a urinal wearing a white toupee."

Martin countered with how he was the more successful star, as when he counted aloud how many awards Short has won ... "three, four, five, six ..." before concluding, oh wait, the number was actually zero.

More than 35 years later, "and you're still 'The Jerk,'" Short said.

They aimed their laser-sharp comedy at themselves, too, sharing embarrassing childhood photos and telling tales of awkward encounters, like when Short finally met his idol Frank Sinatra at a party, and within 15 seconds managed to tick off Ol' Blue Eyes by nervously misunderstanding the bartender's question of "straight up, or on the rocks?"

Martin did a spot-on Elvis impersonation, telling the tale of how as a young comic opening for Ann-Margret in Vegas, he met The King who showed him a couple pistols he happened to be carrying.

The headliners talked about how they met on the set of 1986's "The Three Amigos." To the audience's surprise, Martin and Short climbed down the steps and into the crowd to search for volunteers to join them on stage to recreate the "Three Amigos" salute. The three guys they chose kept forgetting the Three Amigos head turn that precedes the pelvic thrust, though the crowd was amused by their effort.

Martin and Short sat in leathery chairs for a bit to ask each other questions. A big revelation was that Short's hilarious "Saturday Night Live" character Nathan Thurm -- the I'm-not-defensive-you're-the-one-who's-defensive lawyer on "60 Minutes" -- was inspired by an SNL hair and makeup artist who wasn't in on the joke until someone tipped her off at the end of the season.

When asked how many Emmys he had won, Martin replied, "I'd like to say five...

"Really, it's one, though I'd like to say five," said Martin, always a master at putting fresh spins on cliched expressions.

Martin also has won five Grammy Awards for both his comedy and bluegrass albums.

He showed off both skills in a segment where he grabbed his trusty banjo and brought on stage the Steep Canyon Rangers, his North Carolina bluegrass buddies who chugged through several toe-tapping originals.

In between their five-song sequence, Martin cracked jokes along the lines of "We're going to play a new song now, and if you're like me whenever you hear a band say that you think, 'Please don't ... Just play your hits."

"Now I'd like to recognize the band," Martin said, as he approached each musician squinting and peering into their eyes as if literally trying to recognize them.

Noting he grew up in an era of protest singers, like Bob Dylan, Joan Baez and Pete Seeger, Martin proclaimed he finally had written his own protest song: "Let's Keep That Minimum Wage Right Where She Is."

Sure, he told those same jokes when he the Steep Canyon Rangers played Heinz Hall in 2013 with Edie Brickell, but that's OK.

Martin demonstrated he's actually a nimble-fingered banjo picker. And the Steep Canyon Rangers are a heck of a band, earning the only pre-encore standing ovation of the night on a song they performed alone as Martin took a break backstage.

One musical gag that missed the bull's-eye came when Short paid tribute to early '70s musicals, pretending to do a full-frontal performance as Jesus' step-brother. It was a bit too over-the-top.

Short, in a Scottish kilt, also impersonated a bagpipe, kicking his legs in time to his loud humming of "Amazing Grace" while a bigger guy likewise in a kilt held him aloft.

"That's the strangest bit I've ever seen," a sincere-sounding Martin said.

The comedians slung comedic arrows at celebrities like Kim Kardashian and Steven Seagal, and political figures Kellyanne Conway, Vladimir Putin and Nancy Pelosi as each of their images were beamed onto the video screen.

Vice President Mike Pence is so white, Short said, he makes Martin look like Wu-Tang Clan.

Martin talked about his adventures earlier that day in Pittsburgh, such as visiting the Andy Warhol Museum and Ross Park Mall. He raised a good question: Why name a mall after a park? They're two opposite things.

Mindful of the clock ticking toward 10 p.m., Martin and Short finished up with a duet written by Martin laden in self-congratulatory lyrics.

Waving goodbye to the on-its-feet crowd, the comedy stars triumphantly strutted off the stage together -- only to return a minute later saying the Benedum Center's lawyer insisted they perform until 10 p.m. as contractually obligated. So they pretended to ad-lib a song with the chorus of "five minutes to fill ... five minutes to kill."

They stopped singing mid-verse the moment their pianist held up a clock announcing it was 10 p.m. -- the final joke of a night that brought numerous laughs to Pittsburgh.

A small number of tickets remain for Thursday's final night of their two-night performance. Consider this a recommendation to go.

Selena Gomez Posted The Sweetest Tribute To Steve Martin And Martin Short, And There Are Only Hearts In This Building

It's all love in the building.

Production on Season 4 of Only Murders in the Building is in full swing, and our favorite crime-solving trio is back on the case! Easily, one of the reasons why this show is so charming is the friendship that has flourished both on and off screen between the stars Selena Gomez , Martin Short and Steve Martin . Now, even though the Hulu mystery doesn't have a premiere date on the 2024 TV schedule , the Mabel actor is proving that more of that irresistible bestie energy is coming as she posted the sweetest tribute for her co-stars.

While we're no strangers to how much these three adore one another, it's always lovely to see tributes like this one. Taking to Instagram, Gomez penned a caring message to Martin and Short, and let's just say there are only hearts in this building:

A post shared by Selena Gomez (@selenagomez) A photo posted by on

To me, a reason why Only Murders in the Building is one of Hulu’s best shows comes down to the chemistry between Steve Martin, Martin Short and Selena Gomez. Obviously, we know Martin and Short are hysterical together, however adding Gomez into their little group made everything better, and since Season 1 it’s been clear that she fits in with them perfectly.

As the seasons go on and guest stars come and go, the bond between these three has seemingly gotten stronger. On-screen, Charles, Mabel and Oliver’s friendship has grown past just crime solving, and off-screen, the three actors frequently show up to support one another – just take Short emceeing Gomez’s charity event as a prime example. Also, as the Mabel actress noted, working with these two has influenced her life greatly and taught her a lot about being “kind, gentle warm and powerful.”

Only Murders In The Buildings’ Jane Lynch Explains Why She Was ‘Honored’ To Be Killed Off For Season 4’s Mystery

While Martin Short was initially concerned about working with Gomez, since he’d never met her and was worried she could be “a nightmare,” those fears were quickly extinguished. Now, the trio is an adorably wholesome crew of besties, and Martin and Short even sent their co-star flowers to celebrate Season 4 starting production.

Speaking of Season 4, there’s about to be a whole lot of love and crime-solving in the building considering how stacked the cast for the fourth installment of Only Murders is. With Meryl Streep returning , we know we’ll get more irresistible Loretta and Oliver moments. Plus, Eugene Levy will be reunited with Steve Martin and Martin Short, while stars like Molly Shannon will bring the funny and all that good SNL energy.

Overall, things are looking swell over at Only Murders in the Building , and Selena Gomez’s post made me even more excited for Season 4. She very clearly adores her co-leads and sees them as mentors for her, and that makes my heart happy. While unexpected, this trio has proven to be the most wholesome crew, and I could watch them solve murders for an eternity together.

Selena Gomez is showing her appreciation for her Only Murders in the Building costars Steve Martin and Martin Short .

The 31-year-old actress shared a heartfelt tribute to Martin , 78, and Short , 74, on Instagram Tuesday alongside a black-and-white photo of the trio lounging together on the set of their hit Hulu series.

“I want to thank @stevemartinreally and Marty (who hates social media) for truly being the most kind, gentle, warm and powerful influences in my life,” she wrote. “You have shown me a level of class, intellect and humor that doesn’t seem to be easy to find anymore.”

“You guys are truly best friends to me forever. #thebear ” she added.

The tribute comes after the "Love On" singer recently posted a picture on her Instagram Story of the white roses she received from Martin and Short at the start of filming season 4 of Only Murders in the Building .

"We're so happy to be back with you, love, Steve and Marty," the typed note signed by Martin and Short read.

Gomez captioned the photo of the white roses "Day 1."

Gomez opened up about the bond she shares with her OMITB costars during an appearance on Jimmy Kimmel Live! last month.

"Our dynamic [on-screen] is actually very truthful in a way," Gomez told host Jimmy Kimmel . "They're hilarious. Everything I do with them is just a fun experience."

Patrick Harbron/Hulu

The Wizards Of Waverly Place star added she was aware of some of the actors' work before shooting the series together, including Martin's hit movie Father of The Bride and Short's character Jiminy Glick from the shows Primetime Glick and The Martin Short Show .

"They tell me the craziest stories about just how different life was back then and it seemed a lot less chaotic than it is now," Gomez shared.

Gomez also praised her OMITB costar Meryl Streep following the AFI Awards Luncheon in January. After the event, she shared just how much it means to her to work with actors who have earned icon status in Hollywood.

"This woman has not only been my idol but such a wonderful person to me," Gomez captioned a picture of herself posing with Streep, 74, on the red carpet.

"I feel so blessed to know you, Meryl," Gomez's post continued, addressing The Devil Wears Prada star directly. "Thank you for always making me feel seen and heard."

The irony of Steve Martin's life isn't lost on him

“steve (martin) a documentary in 2 pieces,” is premiering friday on apple tv+, by jake coyle | associated press • published march 26, 2024 • updated on march 26, 2024 at 9:10 pm.

Steve Martin has long marveled at the many phases of his life. There’s his youth as a Disneyland performer, surrounded by vaudeville performers and magicians. A decade as a stand-up before the sudden onset of stadium-sized popularity. An abrupt shift to movies . Later, a new chapter as a banjo player, a father and, a comedy act, once again, with Martin Short .

It’s such a confounding string of chapters that Martin has typically only approached his life piecemeal or schizophrenically. He titled an audiobook “So Many Steves.” His memoir, “Born Standing Up,” covered only his stand-up years. In it, he wrote that it was really a biography “because I am writing about someone I used to know.”

“My life has many octopus arms,” Martin says, speaking from his New York apartment.

People participate in documentaries for all kinds of reasons. But Martin may be unique in making a film about his life with the instruction of: “See if you can make sense of all THAT.” Morgan Neville, the documentary filmmaker of the Fred Rogers film “Won’t You Be My Neighbor” and the posthumous Anthony Bourdain portrait “Roadrunner,” took up the challenge.

Yet Neville, too, was hesitant about any holistic view of Martin. The resulting film is really two. “STEVE! (martin) a documentary in 2 pieces,” premiering Friday on Apple TV+, splits Martin’s story in two halves. One depicts Martin’s stand-up as it unfolded, with copious contributions from journal entries and old photographs. The other captures Martin’s life as it is today — riding electric bikes with Short, practicing the banjo — with reflections on the career that followed.

It’s an attempt to synthesize all the Steve Martins, or at least line them up next to each other. The “King Tut” guy with the arrow through his head. The “wild and crazy guy.” The “Jerk.” The Grammy-winner. The novel writer. And the self-lacerating comic who says in the film: “I guarantee I had no talent. None.”

“I’m going to say something very immodest: I have a modesty about my career,” Martin says, chuckling. “Just because you do a lot of things doesn’t mean they’re good. I know that time evaluates things. So there’s nothing for me to stand on to evaluate my efforts. But an outsider can make sense of it.”

Neville, who joined the video call from his home in Pasadena, California, didn’t set out to make two films about Martin. But six months into the process, it crystalized for him as the right structure. Through lines emerged.

“When I look at the things Steve’s done in his life — playing banjo, magic, stand-up — these are things that take great effort to master,” Neville says. “But in a way, it’s the constant working at it. Even seeing Steve pick up a banjo, it’s never, ‘I nailed it.’ It’s always: ‘I could do that a little better.’”

Looking back hasn’t come naturally to Martin. He’s long resisted the kind of life-story treatment of a film like “STEVE!” But Martin, 78, grants he’s now at that time of life where you can’t help it. Even if reliving some things smarts.

“The first part, that’s what I really have a hard time watching," Martin says. “When I’m on black-and-white homemade video being so not funny.”

Martin grew up in Orange County in awe of Jerry Lewis, Laurel and Hardy and Nichols and May. His first job, as an 11-year-old, was selling guide books at Disneyland. He drifted toward the Main Street Magic Shop. Stage performers like Wally Boag became his idols.

When Martin, after studying philosophy in college and writing for “The Smothers Brothers Comedy Hour,” began stand-up, he drew copiously from Boag and others, filtering the showmanship of vaudeville into an avantgarde act, just with balloon animals and an arrow through his head. Donning the persona of, as he says in the film, “a comedian who thinks he’s funny but isn’t,” his routine moved away from punchlines and toward an absurd irony with “free-form laughter.”

Martin’s act was groundbreaking and, in the 1970s, when most comics were doing political material, it became wildly popular. “He’s up there with the most idolized comedians ever,” Jerry Seinfeld says in the film. Now, Martin doesn’t see much from those years that makes him laugh.

“Then there are these moments that I think of as performance glory, but they last a minute or two minutes. It was all so new. It was exciting because it was new to the audience and to me.”

Martin tends to be hard on himself. In one late scene in “STEVE!” he and Short are going over possible jokes, but most don't make the cut for Martin.

It’s tempting to assign some of this nature to Martin’s famously critical father, Glenn, a real-estate salesman who had his own unrealized ambitions in show business. At dinner after the premiere of “The Jerk," he pronounced his son “no Charlie Chaplin.” But Martin disagrees.

“I don’t think so,” says Martin. “It’s good to be hard on yourself. It’s just the way I do it. I just want to go over it and go over it. I realize it’s all in the details. It’s all in the timing.”

That makes Martin think of a joke that he and Short have considered for their act but thus far deemed too esoteric.

“I say, ‘You know, Marty, some comedians say funny things. And some comedians say things funny. And you just say … things,’” says Martin, laughing. “But there’s a truth in saying funny things and saying things funny. You walk the line. Our lives now are saying funny things and it used to be saying things funny.”

It’s a line, typically exact in its wording, that perfectly represents the irony of Martin’s own life. In 1981, Martin quit stand-up, he thought for good. The act had run its course and he was happy to transition to movies. It wasn't until decades later, when Martin prepared to tour as a banjo player, that a friend convinced him audiences were going to want a little banter in between songs.

“So I had this terror and I started working on material,” Martin says. “Eventually I became what I grew up with, which is a folk music act with a funny monologist, making funny intros to songs.”

That’s bled into Martin’s unexpected return to stand-up. Martin and Short, friends since the 1986 comedy “Three Amigos!” have become the premier double act of today, starring on the acclaimed Hulu series “Only Murders in the Building” and performing on the road. They cuttingly but affectionately volley quip after quip with the finesse of Grand Slam champions.

The irony isn't lost on Martin. The no-punchline comedian has become a lover of punchlines.

“I’ve morphed into a person who really appreciates the joy of telling jokes,” shrugs Martin. “Marty and I in our show is joke after joke after joke.”

It’s not the only reversal Martin never expected. After spending most of his life not wanting children, Martin and his wife of 17 years, Anne Stringfield, have an 11-year-old daughter. She’s seen only as a cartoon in “STEVE!” to protect her privacy.

Even more confounding for Martin: After a life riddled by anxiety he's strangely content. Maybe even happy. “Yes, I hate to say it,” Martin says shaking his head.

Martin likes to say he has a “relaxed mind” now. He's peeled away a lot — competitiveness, people or situations who brought him grief — and has narrowed his life down to things that matter most to him.

“I have this thing that I’ve noticed," Martin says. "As we age, we either become our best selves or our worst selves. I’ve seen people become their worst selves and I’ve seen people who were tough, difficult people early on become better selves.”

In the film, Martin puts it: “I look back and go, ‘What an odd life.' My whole life was backwards.”
