Here’s our ideal day on vacation: a challenging morning hike or bike ride that leaves us huffing and puffing, a picnic lunch on a family farm, an afternoon lounging by the pool at a five-star hotel and an exquisite dinner (locally sourced, of course). The best part of this day? All the planning is taken care of.

This is the magic of Backroads , one of Fora’s favorite adventure-travel partners. Backroads combines active travel and luxury travel — think world-class hotels in stunning locales, impeccable gastronomy and expert-vetted biking, hiking and walking routes. (Craving more adventure travel inspiration? Check out our guide to the best adventure resorts .)

Backroads has itineraries for bucket-list-worthy trips on every continent (yes, even Antarctica). Whether you’re a foodie or wine lover, a seasoned cyclist or exercise novice, there’s a Backroads trip for everyone (more on that below).

But how to choose? That’s where a Backroads travel agent (aka Fora Advisor) comes in. Our advisors know the ins and outs of the Backroads experience, and can help you decide the perfect trip based on your intended pace, activity level, destination and travel style. But wherever you ultimately end up, we’d wager it won’t be your last Backroads trip. Once you start, it’s hard to stop.

What are the benefits of using a Backroads travel agent?

review backroads travel

There is so much to choose from (hotel style, destination, culinary experiences), and it can be difficult to know where to start. Enlisting the help of an advisor who really gets you will save you time and energy, while ensuring you get the most out of your trip.

Below, we provide an idea of what to expect on a Backroads vacation (spoiler alert: an unforgettable experience) and lay out how a Fora Backroads travel agent can help make your immersive getaway even more special.

Psst: also learn about the benefits of booking with a cruise travel agent . Our Fora Advisors have your back there, too.

First things first: what kinds of trips does Backroads offer?

review backroads travel

Fora's editorial associate Matigan King with her sibs on a Greece Backroads trip

Backroads’ bread and butter has been bike tours, but the company offers so much more in the realm of adventure travel. They have walking & hiking tours, multi-adventure tours (a combination of biking, hiking and, depending on the destination, yoga, kayaking and river rafting), small-ship cruises and dolce tempo trips, which have a slower pace than their traditional counterparts.

Backroads trips are also categorized by traveler type. There are itineraries designed for couples, friends and solo travelers, as well for families. (You can even choose a family vacation based on the age of the kids: teens, older teens & 20s and 20s and beyond.)

Although most Backroads trips consist of small groups, private trips are available, too, but require a minimum amount of travelers. A Fora Advisor can handle all the logistics, and is an invaluable resource for deciding which trip category is best for you and your entourage.

How much physical activity are we talking?

The short answer: as much or as little as you’d like. That’s the beauty. On any day, there are several routes to choose from, ranging in difficulty. Top-notch tour leaders never lead you astray, and ensure you are comfortable (or uncomfortable, if that’s what you’re after!). Plus, there’s always a support van (complete with snacks and refreshments) should you change your mind half way up that hill. (This is vacation, after all.)

A walking & hiking tour will generally be a bit more accessible than an all-biking tour. Backroads also recently launched a new trip category called dolce tempo , where you’ll still enjoy active exploration, but at a more leisurely pace. But again, this is where Fora's Backroads travel agents come in: they’ll help you navigate all the itinerary options to determine which trip will be more your style.

Where do you stay on a Backroads trip? And what do you eat?

review backroads travel

Backroads takes its accommodations and gastronomy very seriously. They rigorously select and vet properties in unbeatable locations: regal châteaux in Provence, hilltop villas in Italy, a wilderness getaway in New Zealand... From Relais & Châteaux members to family-owned hidden gems, wherever you stay on a Backroads trip, you’re in for a special experience.

Food is top of mind, too. Travelers will get a taste of everything, and can expect a mix of farm-to-table picnics, elevated dining (including dinners at many Michelin-Starred haunts), lively meals at local gems and even home-cooked dinners at locals’ homes.

Wine enthusiast? (We are.) There are trips that explore vineyards (hello, Portugal and Argentina) and include many a wine tasting. Aspiring chef? (Always.) Perhaps one of Backroads’ active culinary trips would be ideal for you.

Options vary by destination, but the food is always local, nourishing and delicious. A Backroads travel agent (aka Fora Advisor) will be able to suggest different itineraries based on the type of dining experience you’re after.

What's it like to travel with Backroads?

Updated: Jan 24

An Active-Luxury Travel Review

review backroads travel

Backroads introduced me to the concept of Active Travel almost twenty years ago, when I first signed up for one of their cycling trips. At the time, they were already twenty years into it and trips mainly revolved around road cycling or hiking. I spent a glorious week in the Canadian Rockies, gawking at eye-popping scenery, laughing with newly made friends and pedaling in a state of what I like to call ‘activity bliss’. I was hooked after that first experience, and vowed to do it again.

That trip also awakened my own love of travel planning, for myself as well as my friends. In subsequent years and inspired by that first Backroads experience, I planned a group cycling trip of my own, a trekking experience through the Dolomites with two friends, as well as all of the Epic Journeys described on this website. I also fell in love with Active Travel. To me, there is no better way to experience a place than by the force of my own power. So I understand why Tom Hale started this company in 1979. And I understand why 40 years later Backroads is still blowing the doors off of the Active Travel scene. Passion begets passion, and it shows with this company. Today, Backroads does more than just cycling and hiking tours. They offer river cruises, and multi-sport adventures, culinary options and snow experiences. And their destination list has become quite impressive.

My husband and I are still avid cyclists today. Although we both have cycled with a few other Active Travel companies over the years, he had yet to experience a trip with Backroads. And quite honestly, I was curious to see if all their growth and diversification had affected the quality of their original Classic Cycling trip.

Spoiler alert: It hasn’t.

Which Trip?

This particular review is for the Loire Valley Classic Cycling trip. There are so many options to choose from, it's really came down to areas of interest and which tours were available at the time of year that we could travel. We had just finished an 11 day road trip in Iceland , which was actually the stop-over en route to Paris. So France was our choice and since I've always wanted to sleep in a castle, Loire Valley seemed to be the perfect match. We chose the Classic trip but there are also two other levels of service, Deluxe Camping and Premiere Hotels. Our two weeks in Iceland had been a self-planned, windy and cold adventure. So we knew that once we arrived in France, we not only wanted warmer weather, but a plush bed and an upgrade from camping as reward. From our discussion with fellow travelers, the biggest difference between the Classic and the Premier trips is that the Premier accommodations all have a spa option on site and the guests dine at more than one Michelin rated restaurant during their trip. From my personal experience, I can tell you that all of the chateaus that we experienced (4-5star) were gorgeous and each night our dining was a three to four course delight, including one Michelin rated restaurant. So if you choose the Classic option, I doubt you will be disappointed.

A Typical Day

The Backroads group is a master at time efficiency. This is in part, why the trip ran so smoothly. It started as we were comfortably transported from the train station to the countryside in an air-conditioned luxury coach. The guides wisely made use of the available hour to cheerfully go over typically mundane topics - the initial debriefing and of course, bicycle safety.

Each day, as we settled into our room, we were provided information sheets that described the ride distance for the next day, options for variance, as well as what times we need to be ready for dinner and breakfast the next morning.

We were fitted to our bikes on the first day. I was impressed by the guides’ attention to detail and sincere interest in making our rides as comfortable as possible. And every day on the tour, they would check the bikes again, tune them up, make any needed adjustments and have then ready to roll the next morning.

After breakfast, a verbal briefing was given, including any tricky or potential confusing sections of the route, options to shorten or lengthen our distance and any sites we would be visiting en route. Snacks such as nuts, protein or granola bars and fruit were provided both before and throughout the ride.

Then, after all questions were answered, we were off. We’d see the guides and support van at various times on route. But we were free to ride our own pace. Some days I stopped frequently en route to take photos. And others, I simply enjoyed a blissful ride though the countryside. Lunch was provided almost every day except for one, either as a fabulous picnic created by the guides or a three course meal at a local restaurant. And at the end of the day, we were always done riding in time to shower and relax in our rooms, prior to dinner.

Backroads does an excellent job at providing distance options to match a variety of cycling abilities as well as varying levels of interest. Flexibility is one of their strongest assets. I could ride as little or as much as I wanted. The guides were even willing to accommodate guests who did not want to ride at all on a given day. Their attitude was “its YOUR vacation!”. The routes on this trip were amazing. Despite my own experience with foreign country way-finding, many of the lesser known paths that we experienced could only be found by local riders or people who really knew the area. Scenic farms roads, hidden, bike-only asphalt paths , quiet gravel trails through tree-lined tunnels – this is quintessential Backroads style. We rarely had to compete with traffic, saw very few cars while riding and were able to enjoy some of the most pleasurable and relaxed cycling that I have experienced in years.

The Equipment

GPS - When I first rode with Backroads nearly twenty years ago, we used paper maps with type written turn-by-turn directions. Today in 2018, each rider had their own GPS unit that attached to their handle bars which had all of the preset routes already programmed into them. Anyone who was less familiar with using a GPS was patiently given instruction and as much repeated help as needed throughout the week. I loved riding this way! All I had to do was glance down occasionally to watch for upcoming turns and listen to the ‘beeps’ that indicated the turn was coming up. In other words, I was able enjoy my ride with my eyes more on the scenery than on an instruction sheet. Granted, some cyclists still missed turns when not paying attention. And the GPS units themselves can sometimes be a bit ‘finicky’ when under canopy. But overall, I felt that they were an asset. In case any of you reading this are gadget-phobes, printed directions were also provided as backup, as well as the guide’s cell phone numbers in case we got lost. We never did.

Bikes - The bikes are one of the major distinguishing features that set Backroads apart from other cycling tour companies. This may not hold the same value to some travelers as it may to others. And I admit that I can enjoy a ride on pretty much any type of bike. But Backroads tours now have three bikes options to choose from, with no additional charge : The Performance road bike (titanium frame, carbon fiber fork, drop bars and electronic Ultegra shifters ), the Touring bike (titanium frame, upright bars, wider tires) and The E –bike (electric pedal-assist shifting on titanium frame). This last addition is a brilliant move. It removes the final barrier that some potential travelers may have: concern over not being fit enough to ride with their families or travel companions. And this bike option is also available at no extra charge, making it easy for riders with varying ability to enjoy the same trip together. Bravo Backroads!

On the Classic Loire Valley trip, the meals were excellent. Each morning, we had a buffet breakfast available, with a wide variety of light European / continental fare. At most hotels, you could also request hot cooked eggs to your liking. Aside from one, lunches were included and comprised of either a gourmet picnic-style lunch (complete with fresh local pastry) or a three course meal at a local restaurant. The menus were semi-fixed, meaning you had two or three pre-arranged items to choose from for each course. And the choices we had were excellent. Dinners were often a two hour affair! Each evening, we met for, or were transported to dinner and seated either as one large group or at tables of six to eight guests. I enjoyed this, as it allowed for terrific table conversations with the guests that we were riding with. Wine or alcohol was not included with most meals but was always available to purchase. And personally, I felt that wine prices were very reasonable. However, a few evenings Backroads did surprise us with celebratory champagne starters. Nice touch. Similar to lunches, we given two to three choices for each course and the selection was terrific. And as an added bonus, on the night we ate at a Michelin rated restaurant, the chef added several additional small items to our dining experience. I was stuffed.

The chateaus where we stayed were beautiful! Backroads did an excellent job at selecting unique places with visual stunning architecture. Each room was slightly different and we were advised that guest room selection was random. We stayed at three different chateaus and although our second room was the largest, the other two nights were spent in equally beautiful, and very comfortable rooms. One note about Loire Valley chateaus: IF there is air conditioning at all, its usually in the common areas and restaurant. Because of the age of the buildings, not all individual rooms may be retro fit.

Our trip was for adult couples and singles and had eleven guests. Backroads also offers trips designed for families, with activities like fencing and chocolate-making for the kiddos. I liked this size group as it was easy to talk to people, without being too overwhelming. The ages of the guests on our trip varied from 25 – 66 years old, with the majority of the group in their 40’s or 50’s. Every one who was on our trip was really nice. Conversations were interesting, we shared many laughs and it felt as if we were all part of the same global 'tribe': people who love to travel, like to stay active and enjoy good food and a few luxuries along the way.

Backroads Guides - Florence, Justin & Jennifer

Another outstanding feature of Backroads is the quality of their staff. Of course, to be in a guide in any tour company, I’d think you would need to have some personality, a thick skin, and a service-oriented attitude. But the team on our trip had obviously been rigorously vetted and included of a lead veteran who had been with Backroads for more than seven years, a fairly new co-leader and an energetic van support guide. All were bilingual, extremely knowledgeable about the area and continually smiling! What stood out for me was that all three of them shared duties, had interchangeable skillsets, and worked as an efficient, collaborative team. All of them were emotionally mature, physically fit, extremely smart and showed genuine interest in each guest. And to add to those admirable qualities, I never felt like anything I asked for was a problem for them to accommodate. Here is an example. I had brought my own cycling shoes and pedals for this trip. During one of the rides, I had the odd experience of losing a screw from one of my shoe clips, leaving it basically impossible to safely get into and out of my pedals. Since I was in the middle of the route, I had to complete that days ride pedaling with one clip-in cycling shoe and one non-clip sport sandal. I was prepared to pedal the remaining days of the tour in my running shoes but the guides barely flinched. “We’ll figure it out!”, was the quick, enthusiastic response. The nearest sporting good or cycling shop was more than fifty miles away. However, the next morning, 'lo and behold', my cycling shoe somehow had a new screw in it and was fully operational. The effort (or the donation) was simply shrugged off with a ‘business as usual’ smile.

The Takeaway

In almost forty years, Backroads has not lost a step.

Even with their immense growth, they have figured out how to maintain that ‘special sauce’ combination that makes them so unique and remain a definitive frontrunner in the Active Travel community. This Classic Loire Valley trip has been a guest favorite for many years and I can see why. The level of seamless organization that I experienced on this route was the reflection of detailed area knowledge, exemplary service, an excellent route plan topped with professional execution.

Yes, many travelers may consider a Backroads trip a vacation ‘investment’. But when I consider everything that is included for the price of the trip - including the level of the service that I received, and the quality of the overall experience - the value is very evident. It was also such a treat for me to let someone else do the work of planning. As I said, I do love organizing my own trips. But sometimes it’s really nice to let go and allow someone else to do it. It feels a little like self-care. The fact that all I had to do was wake up, show up and ride made an activity-filled week feel like a luxury .

Thanks Backroads. You will be seeing me again.

Journeys Unparalleled

Review of Backroads Costa Rica Family Multisport Adventure Tour

by Margot | Jan 5, 2017 | Family Travel , Group Travel |

Review of Backroads Costa Rica Family Multisport Adventure Tour

Clients and great friends of Journeys Unparalleled (a family of 4 with two young boys) just returned from a trip to Costa Rica with Backroads. We asked them to share their frank feedback, and this is what they said of their Costa Rica Family Multisport Adventure Tour :

“This was a really great trip, among the best family trips ever. Here are our notes:

  • The tour leaders were stupendously awesome. Relaxed, great with the kids yet professional and constantly on top of things. There was one tour leader for each family.
  • Avianca flights worked great. Even with the 3am wake-up, the kids were good sports.
  • Biking was the kids’ favorite activity but, that said, it’s hard with small kids and so many hills. We didn’t get much family biking time, although I did all the routes myself. [Each family member can choose to do as much or as little of the biking and activities as they wish.]
  • Car exhaust when biking on the road was an annoyance, but Costa Rican drivers are very courteous and drive pretty safely around bikers.
  • Accommodations were a great balance of quality and family-friendliness. Everything was clean, quiet, spacious, with beautiful views.
  • Family trips with other families, including ones we’ve just met, work great because kids can play with each other.
  • Lots of room changes, but wasn’t really as big an issue as I feared. [On this Backroads trip there were 5 different hotels.]
  • Backroads is really expensive but you get what you pay for: really professional leaders and local guides, excellent accommodations, good food, fun family-friendly activities that are planned and organized so you don’t have to worry about anything.
  • If I were to compare it to Kauai, I would say travel to Costa Rica is definitely an issue because not only are the flights longer, but getting from San Jose to somewhere interesting also takes a few more hours. Kauai has better beaches whereas Costa Rica has more wildlife.

We really enjoyed it so thanks for booking it for us!”

Considering taking a walking trip in Italy with Backroads, travel company out of Berkeley CA. Has anyone gone on one of their walking trips and will share their experience? The trips are rather pricey so I'd like to do some checking before I book.

' class=

I haven't personally traveled with them, but I've always heard good things about their trips, the way they're organized and accomodation choices.

review backroads travel

I looked at Backroads a few years ago when planning a walking trip in Tuscany, still get their catalogs.

I agree, Backroads is quite pricey. We ended up going with Breakaway Adventures, http://www.breakaway-adventures.com . The hotels & routes were good. We wanted independent walking -- not with a group or guide. Hotels were good, routes were lovely & scenic.

If you are interested in going to France, we used Discover France, http://www.discoverfrance.com for a later walking trip in the Dordogne. Breakfasts & dinners were included. Often, we were dining at the finest restaurant in the area. Food was to die for!

With each of these companies, we did independent walking. They gave us maps & route itinerary, and transported our luggage each day to the next destination. We also had the option of getting a ride with the driver in case of bad weather or mild injury, instead of walking. The hotels were always pre-arranged for us & included breakfast at least.

This company is arguably the largest with over 300 biking, hiking, multisport and cultural immersion trips available in 44 countries. But that doesn't mean that service is compromised. In fact, Backroads guides are trained to be extremely accommodating. And Backroads can be a good value: the trips are about 25% less than B & R, and if you choose the Premiere Inns option, you will often stay in the same accommodations. A nice feature is that because you choose from multiple levels of accommodation options, you get a selection of prices to choose from. The "Casual Inns" tours stay at 3-4 star inns, with "Premiere Inns" jumping to 4-5 stars.

There are also a wide variety of family-oriented and singles trips. Backroads clients are slightly younger, and more likely to have some experience with adventure travel. The typical client is a 45-year-old executive at a Fortune 500. There are always some strong riders on a Backroads trip, so you'll have company if you are planning on doing the supplemental longer routes. Going single is encouraged, and you don’t have to pay extra if you are willing to share a room. Backroads attracts guests who enjoy camaraderie so night time socializing is pretty good with this group.

$500/ day? We are doing Provence to French Riveira… try $2500/ day for us Canadians… Day 1 massive bus for 14 people, told to wait to use washroom til we reached destination… greeted to an outhouse, asked for stem extender on handle bars, installed by ride leader, NOT a bike mechanic, loose steering, twisted about 3 xs, got lost and texted for help, they didn’t actually come and find us.. we found them, greeted with hot bath water to drink at top of hill and other warm drinks, poor material tote cooler you’d buy at walmart, no ice available but ice was available once we reached hotel.. why couldn’t someone drive to pick up ice and bring back? Staying at a 5 star hotel but NOT A 5 STAR ROOM! In the basement, no view, 2 flights of stairs to the basement.. PAYING 2.5xs our last accommodations which were just named #1 Hotel in France … advice: When in France, Pay the French for what they do best… 2/10 for BACKROADS… don’t waste your money.

I would steer clear of Backroads until Covid is in the rear view mirror. We were on the Costa Rica tour, and a traveler tested positive. They offered us a wimpy mask and did not request that exposed guests or employees wear masks or test on a daily basis. Our group of six decided that this response was inadequate, and flew home in the middle of the tour. The hotel and food that we encountered on the tour were excellent, but the bikes provided were inadequate. Most of the bikes had front derailleurs that were out of adjustment, and a majority of the bikers had chains come off of the crank on the first ride. The rides were also much more difficult than advertised and we hike mostly in downpours. Be aware that they may not provide a premium experience for the premium price.

Have been on two BR trips. Amazing in every detail, and I mean detail. In 2018 did Costa Brava & Pyrenees, 2021 Bordeaux & Dordogne. Both were at premium level and both were incredible! The Guides, the guides, the guides! The bikes, the service, the itinerary, the food, the accommodations, the places, the enhanced culture exposure and the worry free atmosphere. From start to finish! I can’t say enough except; “I shall return.” 🙂

Received an email confirmation that I had a reservation on a bike trip with Backroads. 2 days later after changing my work schedule and booking over $12K in non-refundable air and hotel reservations, received an email from Backroads that they had made a mistake and that they didn’t have space on the trip and regretted the inconvenience. DO NOT USE BACKROADS. Horrendous.

I just finished the cycling trip through the Dolomites. So professional and very organized. We loved having Guido as our lead tour guide He really was amazing! Nicola really had such a great personality and explained everything to us so well. Other two guides were really great, as well. Thanks guys!

Did the Monterey to Santa barbera trip. Was better than hoped and the guides were super young adults. Best I have ever done. Would highly recommend them

We have been on perhaps a dozen or so Backroads trips over the past 30 years – US, Europe and China. It is a wonderful company and they have great trips. It has settled into the 6 day 5 night trips.

We used your site to find Backroads. Thank you!!! Traveling with Backroads to Costa Rica was a truly first class experience. The hotels, the meals and the leaders were all first class! Thanks again.

I’ve taken over 70 bike trips all over the world with most of the companies, and Backroads is my favorite — clearly top of the class. The most important factor is consistent quality — in the guides especially, but also in hotels, food, rental bikes, van support, local guide briefings, route notes, pleasant surprises. They offer luxury and casual trips; I’ve taken both and they’re the same except that lesser rated but perfectly acceptable hotels are used on the casual trips. The office staff are top notch and have always responded honestly to questions about degree of difficulty. Guests are diverse but always convivial companions — you could bike with a guy who drives commuter trains (I did) or with a top railroad executive (ditto). Wide range of ages. Always great fun. Plenty of options for the more energetic or van pickups for those who’ve had enough. Timely baggage pick-up/delivery by contractor so your bags are always in your room when you arrive. Backroads hasn’t forgotten anything. A perfect active vacation.

My Backroads vacation riding through Tuscany was the best vacation of my life. I have talked to people that say that the lodging choices are sometimes uneven, but my experience was great. Our tour leaders were really nice and accommodating, too.

This was our first bike trip so I don’t have anything to compare it too, but it was just awesome! They took care of everything, so it was stress free. There was a good balance of riding, socializing, being on your own, challenges, & discovering local culture. The food was tremendous, the leaders were friendly, knowledgeable, supportive & organized. Our group “clicked” so the social was an added bonus – not to mention all the great wine that was consumed!

Backroads has given great value on the five trips we’ve taken with them — no more so than last week when they ran our trip … and we were the only family on it. Having had tours canceled by other operators before, my heart sank when I got the call … only to be reassured that, yes, we were going. Of course. It was an extraordinary trip — we did everything on the itinerary and had two knowledgeable, cheerful guides at our beck and call. We’ve gone on over a dozen cycle trips with different companies — Backroads is great value, great people — and great customer commitment.

The variety of trips and accommodations are fantastic. Guides are very knowledgeable and all very good bikers, some even ex bike racers. We are planning a seventh trip and have taken our 16-year old on all of them. Level of riding is tops with three or more options each day as to length and difficulty. Places to stay are absolutely fabulous, four star Castle’s and Chateaux.

I have gone on many trips with Backroads and they have all been great. I like that they have different pricing options (classic or deluxe). Go now while the tourism business is hurting … the groups will be smaller and more intimate. I’ve been on trips with 16-20 people, and that is just too many.

I have used many companies specializing in bike/multi sport trips and find Backroads to be far superior to any others. Everyone at their headquarters is extremely knowledgeable and friendly to work with and the follow through is quite impressive. Their guides are top notch and are chosen according to their area of expertise which is not always the case. The side trips are chosen to provide the guest with a sense of the local culture, be it a cooking class or another type of experience but this is totally optional. The two categories of trips (Premier or Casual Inns allows the traveler to make a conscious decision about the type of lodging desired and the amount of money involved. One has the option to ride as little of as much as possible and, in the case of the latter, the guides will do their best to make sure that a guide is available to provide support. I have done at least 15 trips with the company and have no inclination to every use another company.

I am considering conversion to Buddhism so I can be reincarnated as a Backroads leader. These are some really special people…. All three leaders were competent bike mechanics. They were doing everything from fixing my youngest daughter`s helmet straps to using the barrel adjuster to tweak the cable tension. An absolutely fabulous experience.

My husband and I chose the North Carolina Backroads Bike Tour to celebrate our 30th Wedding Anniversary. We Loved It!!!! The ride was well organized with detailed maps that were spot on. The staff was fun, friendly and always willing to go the extra mile to make sure every guSilk Hope, NCests needs were met, even making sure we had our favorite drinks and snacks available for us after a long ride. We will absolutely sign on for another trip with Backroads. It was the best vacation we have ever been on.

I`ve been active travelling for 20+ years. Never have I experienced such a level of professionalism and execution of detail all focused around providing the greatest overall experience. Bravo Backroads.

My husband and I went on the multisport trip to Morocco with Backroads. It was perfect in every way!

Backroads made our first biking experience very memorable. My husband and I had not been on an outside bike in over 3 years, yet we never felt pressured to keep up with the group. We were told repeatedly that this was our vacation. Every detail was looked after, from the suitcases to detailed maps of our daily ride. The food and accommodations were great, but the best part was the leaders. They were awesome!

My wife and I enjoyed a six day, five night biking tour of Brittany and Normandy in mid-September 2015. “Excellent trip leaders and support throughout. I enjoyed the depth of the D Day components – which were the heart of why I chose this trip.

Canadian Gulf Islands Multisport was our 4th trip with Backroads. The guides are wonderful, bikes are comfortable, accommodations & food very good. We haven’t had bad experience yet. Gulf Islands bike rides are quite the workout with LOTS of hills but beautiful views.

I had a very good time despite the fact that it was an emotional time for me. The trip allowed me the beauty and space to focus on the important things in life, allowed me to get reacquainted with myself and allowed me to cry the tears I had not shed for my deceased husband. Miriam (Mimi), Jackie and Guillermo were fun, knowledgeable and encouraging. There was quite a bit of laughter accompanying the cycling and it was always a pleasure seeing Guillermo on the stops. I learned to appreciate breaks because of his charm.

Just home from my tenth Backroads trip, this one an epic trip to South Africa and Botswana. They have all been wonderful. This is why I keep going back to Backroads. I can trust them to do a safe, fun, educational trip.

California Wine Country Trip – September 2015. This was our first Backroads trip, but we had very high expectations based on recommendations from our friends. We would give it an `11` if we could. Words cannot do justice to describe how awesome our experience was on this trip. My wife and I can’t wait for our next Backroads experience!

We do at least one 7 day bike trip a year and used other companies. This was our first Backroads trip and there will be more. We felt so pampered on this Nova Scotia trip! All 3 guides were fabulous and also a very nice bunch of guests. Thank you!

I took Backroads’ Bryce, Zion, and Grand Canyon Multi-sport Adventure (Casual Inns) in September 2015. Great scenery, excellent guides and guests, and spectacular bike rides and hikes. An amazing trip all around. I appreciate Backroads` attention to detail and ensuring the customer has the best experience possible.

I’ve gone on trips with several bike touring companies; we chose this one because we heard it was first class. It’s true. From start to finish you were on an adventure of a lifetime and always felt you could ride at your own level, no pressure. The bikes could handle every pot hole, the trip leaders were knowledgeable and the cue sheets were perfect (no small accomplishment). Great tour of the big island, Hawaii, so if you haven’t been, pump up your “tires” and go!

Editoral Review of Back-Roads Touring

Back-Roads Touring, rebranded as Blue-Roads in November 2018 for the North American market, offers boutique small group tours around the world.

What Makes Back-Roads (Blue-Roads) Touring Stand Out?

They stick to a very small group size, which allows them to offer truly authentic and local experiences. Their guides have extensive local knowledge and connection, and touring with them is like visiting a good friend who can’t wait to show you the best hidden gems and introduce you to their culture and history.

Who Will Enjoy Traveling With Back-Roads (Blue-Roads) Touring?

Travelers who feel adverse to large groups, and maybe aren’t sure if group travel is for them should definitely take a look through the itineraries offered by Back-Roads. Groups are kept very small - with a max of 18.

The age range often skews a bit older - catering to active and adventurous 50+ travelers eager for a relaxing yet invigorating trip. However travelers anywhere from the mid 30s and above will enjoy traveling with them. Especially if you’re the type of traveler for whom the more party-focused companies that serve the 18-30 range are not appealing.

Top Destinations

Back-Roads offers itineraries around the world, though they are especially well known for UK and Europe travel. You can find trips throughout the UK and Ireland, Europe - including the Nordic and Baltic countries. They also provide some Asia tours, primarily in the southeast (Thailand, Vietnam, and Cambodia).

Back-Roads (Blue-Roads) Touring Travel Style

Groups are small, and the activities range from easy walks or hikes to visits to cultural and historical sites. They offer a few broad themes, such as battlefield tours, culinary tours, sailing tours, history tours, and nature tours.

Accommodations with Back-Roads are generally in local and traditional hotels or guest houses. These usually have stairs, and are sometimes old buildings - you may encounter funky showers and not have the luxury of an elevator. They advise that you should be able to carry your luggage up and down flights of stairs.

Why Choose Back-Roads (Blue-Roads) Touring?

The small group tour experience is at its best with companies like Back-Roads. They provide top notch customer service and guides, dedicated to showing you the best of what a country has to offer. For travelers who want a chance to experience a new place through local eyes, as well as learn the history and enjoy good food and company - within a wide age range - Back-Roads is a great choice.

The 8 best travel backpacks of 2024

Need lots of pockets for water bottles or tripods? Theft-deterrent zippers? A cushioned laptop compartment? No matter what kind of travel bag you need, we’ve got you covered.

Whether you’re traveling overnight or for weeks at a time, you'll need a backpack that's functional, comfortable, and helps keep you organized.

We know there's no one backpack that will work for everyone, so we picked bags that will meet the needs of most types of travelers—whether you need a small option for the overhead of a plane, or lockable zippers for security.

Our best overall travel backpack is the Peak Design Travel Pack 45L , which ticks all the boxes for durability, versatility, and comfort, but also offers a thoughtful design, unique organizational features and high-quality, sustainably made materials.

Our picks for the best travel backpack

Best overall: peak design travel pack 45l.

review backroads travel

Buy it now: $300 at Backcountry

Why we like it:   The sleek-looking Peak Design Travel Pack 45L is our best overall travel backpack. It's expandable, carry-on compliant, and is bursting with innovative features.

This backpack is functional—think gusseted side pockets for water bottles or tripods—and made with high-quality weatherproof materials and theft-deterrent zipper pulls. It’s durable and secure, and it’s obvious that every detail of this bag has been carefully thought through.

There are smartly placed pockets, and the padded harness system tucks beneath magnetic flaps for duffel-style carry. The spacious main cavity is accessible from the front, rear and both sides, and the extensively padded bag has 16-inch laptop and tablet sleeves.

Keep in mind:   At 4.5 pounds, it’s not light, and smaller-framed travelers may find it cumbersome to carry. The harness isn’t adjustable, so the torso length is one-size-fits-all.

Product details:   Sizes available: 30L, 45L | Materials:   Recycled nylon and polyester | Frame type: Frameless | Number of external pockets: 8

The best with laptop compartment: Thule Aion 40L

review backroads travel

Buy it now: $200 at Backcountry

Why we like it:   The Thule Aion 40L is our best backpack with a laptop compartment.   It’s a carry-on travel backpack that accommodates a 16-inch laptop while leaving plenty of room for other gear.

Its roomy side-access laptop compartment contains cushioned laptop and tablet sleeves. There’s a compartment for accessories and a rollaway bag for damp or dirty items in the main compartment, which minimizes the chances of wet belongings damaging tech.

There are breathable, padded shoulder straps and a back panel, plus a sternum strap to keep things secure. A robust side handle facilitates duffel-style carry, and there’s a pass-through for a rolling suitcase attachment.

Keep in mind:   There’s no weight-bearing hip belt, and the wax-coated canvas creates a weathered look that might not appeal to everyone.

Product details:   Sizes available: 28L, 40L | Materials: Recycled polyester | Frame type: Frameless | Number of external pockets: 2

The best small travel backpack: Patagonia Atom 20L Tote Pack

review backroads travel

Buy it now: $89 at Patagonia

Why we like it:   Our pick for the best small travel backpack is the Patagonia Atom 20L Tote Pack, a versatile, lightweight bag that stows under airplane seats. This backpack has a large main compartment, which houses a thickly padded removable 13-inch laptop sleeve and a hydration bladder pass-through for hikers.

External features include a bike light loop, attachment points for the removable sternum strap and other essentials, and a zippered front compartment that occupies the full length of the bag.

The well-padded, breathable harness system makes the Atom a comfortable carry in backpack mode, but it can also be transported tote-style using its sturdy handles.

Keep in mind:   The two compartments lack organizational features, and the laptop sleeve compromises internal space. The backpack fits a 17-inch torso length, so it may not work for taller travelers.

Product details:   Sizes available: 20L | Materials: Fairly traded recycled polyester and nylon | Frame type: Frameless | Number of external pockets: 3

The best anti-theft backpack: Pacsafe Venturesafe EXP35 Anti Theft Travel Backpack

review backroads travel

Buy it now: $270 at Amazon

Why we like it:   The Pacsafe’s practical, versatile Venturesafe EXP35 Anti Theft Travel Backpack is our pick for the best anti-theft backpack. It’s made with recycled slash-resistant material and lockable, puncture-resistant, self-locking zippers.

This pick has an RFID-blocking pocket to keep credit card information safe and a hidden lockable 16-inch laptop compartment. The comfortable, breathable harness system has cut-resistant straps that can be used to secure the bag to fixed objects.

Keep in mind:   The anti-theft features hamper quick access, and the bag’s solid construction and numerous compartments make it feel heftier than it is.

Product details:   Sizes available: 35L | Materials: Recycled polyester | Frame type: Frameless | Number of external pockets: 3

The best rolling backpack: Osprey Farpoint / Fairview 36 Wheeled Travel Pack

review backroads travel

Buy it now:   $300 at Osprey ( Farpoint and Fairview )

Why we like it:   The Osprey Farpoint/Fairview 36 Wheeled Travel Pack* is our pick for best rolling backpack. It’s comfortable in backpack mode, has a stamina-saving rolling mode, and is straightforward to switch between the two.

This bag features padded shoulder straps and hip belt, mesh back panel and torso adjustment to provide a comfortable backpack-style carry. If your back needs a break, engage the harness stowaway system, extend the single tube ergonomic handle and let the rugged, oversized wheels do the work.

Organizational features include a zippered top pocket for quick-access items and a 15-inch laptop compartment; the main cavity facilitates easy packing with its compression straps and suitcase-style opening.

*The bags’ features are identical; however, the Fairview’s fit is tailored specifically to women.

Keep in mind:   It’s a heavy bag, and the interior frame and stowed rolling handle reduce capacity in the main compartment.

Product details:   Sizes available: 36L, 65L | Materials: bluesign® approved recycled nylon | Frame type: 4 mm LightWire peripheral frame | Number of external pockets: 4

The best carry-on backpack: Cotopaxi Allpa 35l Travel Pack

review backroads travel

Buy it now:   $200 at REI

Why we like it:   The Allpa 35L Travel Pack from Cotopaxi is our best carry-on backpack—a durable, easily stowable option with thoughtful organizational features and anti-theft zippers.

The no-nonsense, adjustable harness system tucks away neatly into a slotted back panel during transit, while four reinforced grab handles make pulling the backpack out of an overhead bin child’s play. The bag opens suitcase-style for efficient packing, but a side zipper also provides on-the-go access.

High-visibility backing in the front compartment makes searching for small items less challenging, and there’s convenient side access to the padded 15-inch laptop sleeve, which has a false bottom to protect devices if dropped. There’s a rainfly included, should you arrive at your destination to unexpected wet weather.

Keep in mind:   Flimsy and lacking structure, it doesn’t hold its shape unless it is full. The lack of an external water bottle pocket may be a deal-breaker for some.

Product details:   Sizes available: 28L, 35L, 42L | Materials:   Recycled polyester and nylon | Frame type: Frameless | Number of external pockets: 2

The most versatile backpack: Gregory Rhune 25 Pack

review backroads travel

Buy it now:   $130 at REI

Why we like it:   Our pick for the most versatile travel backpack is the Gregory Rhune 25 Pack, a water-resistant travel backpack with great functionality and a surprising amount of space.

Thanks to its structured base, rounded body, and organizational compartments, more fits into this 25L bag than you’d expect. Padded internal sleeves fit a 15-inch laptop and tablet/folio, and pockets outside include a handy swing-around access stash pocket.

With a moisture-wicking padded back panel, removable sternum strap and contoured shoulder straps, this bag is designed to carry weight comfortably: a great all-rounder whether you’re a hiker, digital nomad, or urban sightseer.

Keep in mind:   Top-opening access makes it tricky to locate items at the base. Shoulder straps may feel bulky to smaller travelers.

Product details:   Sizes available:   20L, 22L, 25L | Materials: Recycled polyester and nylon | Frame type:   Frameless | Number of external pockets: 4

The best budget backpack: tomtoc Navigator-T66 Travel Laptop Backpack 40L

review backroads travel

Buy it now:   $82 at Amazon

Why we like it:   The Navigator-T66 Travel Laptop Backpack 40L is our pick for the best budget travel backpack. It’s made with quality materials and loaded with organizational features despite its affordable price tag.

The sturdy, water-resistant, and easy-to-pack clamshell design, plus the multi-functional pockets and attachment points, mean efficient organization. This backpack has a TSA-friendly 17-inch laptop compartment, which will save time at airport security.

The cushioned harness means it’s comfortable to wear, and top and side handles and a pass-through make it easy to grab or attach to a wheeled suitcase.

Keep in mind:   It’s so heavily padded that packing space feels compromised. There’s no load-bearing hip belt.

Product details:   Sizes available:   40L | Materials:   Recycled PET bottles | Frame type:   Frameless | Number of external pockets:   4

Our review process

I referred to brand product descriptions, third-party reviews, competitor articles, Reddit discussion boards, watched an excessive number of review videos, and evaluated my findings with my own knowledge and experience, considering the following:

Material and quality: Durability of materials and hardware is critical for a bag that will be repeatedly thrown into overhead bins and exposed to bad weather.

Versatility: I looked for bags that could be carried duffel-style, fastened to a rolling suitcase or pulled-on wheels and were capable of protecting tech equipment, and keeping belongings dry on hikes.

Storage and protection: I looked for features such as stowable harness systems for ease of storage, and hidden pockets and anti-theft zippers for peace of mind.

Comfort: Weight-bearing, cushioned hip belts, secure sternum straps and adjustable padded shoulder straps all maximize carry comfort.

Organization: Positioning and accessibility of pockets, compartments and attachment points are a matter of personal preference, but they should maximize functionality.

Sustainability: I prioritized bags made with recycled materials and brands actively addressing their social, ethical and environmental impact.

What to know about travel backpacks

Here are a few things to consider when buying a travel backpack:

The most common materials used for travel backpacks are nylon and polyester (both increasingly recycled), which can be treated to enhance durability and water resistance.

The size of a travel backpack is measured in liters, with external pockets included. How much it actually fits depends on shape, material thickness, flexibility, and padding.

Backpacks with heavy external frames offer structure and support. Internal frames hold bags closer to the body, offering more stability but less ventilation.

Number of external pockets

External compartments such as mesh water bottle holders and quick-grab pockets are great for organization.

Carry-on weight allowances vary between airlines, so a lightweight bag optimizes what you can pack.

Look for high-quality harnesses with cushioned straps, breathable back panels, secure sternum straps, and a weight-bearing hip belt if required.

Frequently asked questions

What is the best backpack to take on a plane.

Choose a backpack that fits in an overhead bin and has a robust handle for retrieving it. Quick-access external pockets and efficient internal organization enable quick access to belongings; lockable zippers provide security.

Is a travel backpack a carry-on?

As long as it complies with your airline’s regulations.

What is a good size backpack to travel with?

The length and purpose of your trip will determine the size of the bag you need. Generally speaking, a 25-30 liter backpack should suffice for weekend trips, and 30-45 liters allow a good amount of space for longer travel. For most airlines, backpacks up to 45 liters should be carry-on compliant.

Teams race on West Virginia backroads for charity

C LARKSBURG, W.Va. (WBOY) – If you’ve ever wanted to explore all the sights of West Virginia through backroads, the inaugural 24 Hours of Appalachia: Run for the Hills Fundraiser gave that opportunity to more than 70 teams to explore many of West Virginia’s iconic overlooks.

Backroads of Appalachia and West Virginia Gambler 500, hosted the event and required all drivers to make a direct donation to the West Virginia Children’s Home Society ; in total, the event raised $11,634.56.

Jedediah Smith, the Director of Operations for Backroads of Appalachia said another goal was to bring business to counties facing economic hardship.

“We work directly under the Appalachian Regional Commission, and we utilize their map for economic disparities. So, we try to put the events in counties that are most affected by negatively by economics. So we try to bring people to those counties, spend a few hundred dollars there to boost the local economy,” Smith said.

More than 70 full-size cars and three side-by-sides traveled almost 600 miles across the state, starting the morning of Feb. 3. Each team consisted of a driver and a spotter who had access to radio for event chatter and emergency-only lines, which were monitored by Smith’s team.

The first team finished the route at 2:30 a.m. on Sunday, Feb. 4 with their side-by-side, according to Smith. Awards for the riders included best time and best navigation. All the data captured in different navigation apps was submitted to Smith for review.

They started in Seneca Rocks and ended in Point Pleasant. Organizers made sure the stops they chose would allow for teams to gas up and eat before getting back on track.

When signing up, drivers were required to submit pictures of their vehicles along with any modifications to make sure they would be able to safely travel the backroads. Smith’s team also had 10 recovery vehicles, mobile and stationary to be ready for any mechanical failures or help stuck drivers.

“They have requirement for First Aid Kit, recovery gear to be able to get themselves out of sticky situation, and some other various things that make life easier on the trail,” said Smith.

Smith said the next event will be in the summer, around July; no exact date has yet been set but an announcement will be out soon. The plan is to now host a winter and summer run for the years to come, with proceeds going to different charities each time. In addition, they will also change the route to feature new places to explore and keep it fresh.

AXA Assistance USA  offers consumers a great option for no-stress travel insurance: low-priced plans, generous coverage limits on key categories including primary insurance on lost luggage, and up to 150% reimbursement for qualifying trip cancellations.

Trawick International Travel Insurance  is another medically robust insurance provider that can help higher-risk and anxious travelers find peace of mind while on the road. Best Travel Insurance for Road Trips: Travelex Travel Insurance

Travelex Travel Insurance  offers three plans:

  • Travel Basic
  • Travel Select
  • Travel America

The Travelex American plan is meant for trips limited to the US, but it has the highest coverage limits in many areas compared to its other programs. If you're flying somewhere, the lost baggage limits are higher. Its natural strengths shine for road trippers, though. Travelex America adds coverage for roadside service and rental car coverage for unexpected accidents. It also covers pets should you be involved in an accident while on the road.

While your standard auto insurance does extend to car rentals within the US for a limited time, any accident would affect future rates. Travelex would eliminate the risk of reporting to your auto insurance provider for minor incidents within its purview.

Introduction to Travel Insurance

Why travel insurance is a must-have.

The unpredictable nature of traveling – from flight cancellations to medical emergencies – can turn your dream vacation into a nightmare. Travel insurance acts as a personal safeguard, ensuring that unexpected events don't drain your wallet or ruin your trip.

Understanding Different Types of Travel Insurance

Not all travel insurance policies are created equal. From single-trip travel insurance policies to annual travel insurance plans , from minimal coverage to comprehensive protection, understanding the spectrum of options is your first step in finding the right fit for your journey.

Key Features to Look for in Travel Insurance Coverage

Travel insurance for medical emergencies.

Imagine falling ill in a foreign country; daunting, right? A robust travel insurance plan ensures you don't have to worry about the financial aspect of receiving medical care while traveling , even in the most remote corners of the globe.

Trip Cancellation and Interruption Benefits

Life is full of surprises, some less pleasant than others. Trip cancellation and interruption coverage ensures that you're not left out of pocket if unforeseen circumstances force you to cancel or cut your trip short.

Coverage for Personal Belongings and Baggage Loss

Losing your belongings is more than an inconvenience; it's losing a piece of your world. Insurance that covers personal belongings and baggage loss ensures that you're compensated for your loss, helping you to rebound and continue your adventure.

Support and Assistance Services

In times of trouble, having a lifeline can make all the difference. Look for insurance that offers 24/7 support and assistance services, giving you peace of mind that help is just a phone call away.

Choosing Travel Insurance

Reputation and reliability of the travel insurance provider.

A provider's reputation is not just about being well-known; it's about reliability, customer satisfaction, and the ability to deliver on promises. Researching and choosing a reputable provider is a cornerstone in ensuring your safety and satisfaction.

Understanding the Policy's Fine Print

The devil is in the details, and understanding the fine print of what your travel insurance policy covers is crucial. Be aware of coverage limits, exclusions, and the process for filing a claim to avoid any unpleasant surprises.

Customer Reviews and Feedback

In the age of information, customer reviews and feedback are goldmines of insight. Learn from the experiences of others to gauge the reliability and customer service of the insurance provider you're considering.

How to Get the Most Out of Your Travel Insurance

Knowing your policy inside out.

Familiarize yourself with every aspect of your policy – what it covers, what it doesn't, how to file a claim, and who to contact in an emergency. Being informed means being prepared.

Steps to Take When a Problem Arises

If you face an issue during your travels, knowing the immediate steps to take can make all the difference. Keep important contacts and your policy details handy, and remember, your insurance provider is there to assist you.

How to Pick the Best Travel Insurance Company for You

There isn't a one-size-fits-all policy that works perfectly for every traveler. Young, healthy solo travelers can opt for much cheaper plans that offer bare-bones coverage, while families juggling complex itineraries will do best by investing in a robust policy that can help defray any costs associated with lost baggage, delayed transportation or other trip-impeding obstacles.

That being said, you can't go wrong with a travel insurance provider that boasts a reputable history and offers a wide range of customizable plans. In some cases, you may be comparing plans that are only a few dollars' apart from each other. In such situations, you should generally opt for the insurance company that offers the strongest customer service. It's also worth considering whether or not the travel insurance provider has been reviewed by other travelers with similar itineraries to your own.

An insurance aggregator like InsureMyTrip or Squaremouth is one of the best tools for searching travel insurance policies. Once you input the specifics of your travel itinerary, you'll be able to see hundreds of search results to compare the ones that catch your eye. If the options are too overwhelming, use the filters to the left of your search page to eliminate as many irrelevant plans as possible.

Yes, travel insurance typically offers some coverage of canceled flights, but if this benefit is important to you, make sure you read the fine print of your policy to make sure it offers adequate reimbursement. If you think you may need to cancel your travel plans, you should consider purchasing cancel for any reason (CFAR) travel insurance .

Travel insurance will pay out if you experience a covered event, such as a travel delay or delayed or lost baggage. If you're looking to get travel insurance for a specific reason, such as needing to potentially cancel your trip, make sure your policy will cover you in that situation before purchasing it.

Most comprehensive travel insurance policies include medical coverage that can come in handy if an emergency occurs and you need medical evacuation. Some travel insurance plans offer more specialized coverage for travelers with preexisting conditions, so shop around if medical coverage is a top priority for you.

$100,000 should be a sufficient medical coverage limit for travel insurance. If you're planning on doing extreme sports or anything particularly risky on your trip, you may want to increase your coverage level. A high medical coverage limit is especially useful when you're purchasing cruise travel insurance, since medical evacuations are more involved at sea.

Why You Should Trust Us: How We Chose The Best Travel Insurance Companies

To come up with our list of the best travel insurance companies, we evaluated each insurer based on the following factors:

Guide Methodology: What We Considered

Policy Types

Travel insurance is essential, but often underused partly because people aren't getting what they want. Business Insider's 2023 travel study showed 10.65% of travelers surveyed bought cancel for any reason insurance. Cost may be a factor, but in many cases, the coverage is more affordable than you might think. Regardless, companies must offer a diverse range of coverage options. We award 5 stars to companies offering all standard coverages and additional options like pet and sports equipment protection.

Our 2022 travel study indicated the majority of purchases were made through the travel provider (ex: flight protection insurance when you're purchasing your airline tickets). While these may be sufficient for some customers, we look for companies offering a more comprehensive range of services.

According to the US Travel Insurance Association, the average cost of travel insurance will be between 4% and 8% of total travel expenses. Anything beyond that price point should include additional benefits beyond the standard inclusions, such as CFAR protection or upgraded medical coverage. Anything below that 4% threshold may leave you lacking important or sufficient coverage in an emergency.

Convenience and Flexibility

Whether you're an infrequent traveler or a suitcase warrior, a good travel insurance company should have you covered. In many cases, you might not even have to talk to a person in order to purchase your policy.

Many people think of travel insurance in context with specific trips, but most of these top contenders sell both single-trip and multi-trip policies, also known as annual travel insurance. Some companies also offer plans specifically designed for cruisers, students abroad, and business travelers. (Read our guide to the best cruise travel insurance companies for more details.) Finally, all of these providers offer multiple options for getting the specific areas and amounts of coverage that you want.

Claims Handling

Most travelers never have a large claim. Premiums are low, and it provides peace of mind for the just in case situations. So they leave reviews based on their reduced stress levels. But what happens if you lose your luggage or have to stay a few extra days due to an unexpected accident? Will your insurance carrier cover your claim without all the hassle? We check real customer reviews to sort this out for you.

Ease of Use and Support

When purchasing, during your trip, and throughout the claims process, you may need extra support. Does the company have a 24/7 help line? Does it have an online or mobile system allowing you to self-manage? Essentially, what are the options when you need help? We look at the big picture to evaluate the average customer experience with each company.

You can read our full insurance rating methodology for even more details.

As a Globetrotting Writer, These Comfy Hoka Shoes Are the Only Sneakers I Pack in My Carry-on When I Travel

I wore them straight out of the box for a 27,000-step day, and there wasn’t a blister to be seen.

We independently evaluate all recommended products and services. If you click on links we provide, we may receive compensation. Learn more .

Travel + Leisure / Madison Woiten

I’ve spent the last three years as a nomadic writer and editor, traveling to more than 20 countries with just a carry-on and backpack. As such, my wardrobe is limited in every sense. I have only a few pairs of shoes with me at any time, so every pair has to wear a lot of hats — and, even more importantly, be comfortable enough to stand up to the longest travel days. My exact footwear mix depends on the season and destination, but I always like to have a solid athletic sneaker in my suitcase for walking, workouts, and outdoor adventures.

The latest addition to my (very tiny) rotation — the Hoka Mach 5 — is by far the most comfortable pair I’ve worn in years. Even better, it’s proven itself to be pain-free right out of the box when I logged a 27,000-step day walking around on hot pavement in Kona, Hawai’i while spectating the Ironman World Championships. I was dog-tired by the end of it, but you better believe my feet didn’t hurt. Since then, these sneakers have become the only athletic shoes I travel with and have proven their comfort time and time again.

Hoka Mach 5 Sneakers

You’ve likely seen Hokas around — on the feet of travelers, fashion influencers, and fitness instructors across TikTok and also celebs like Cameron Diaz and Reese Witherspoon . But this model, the Mach 5, doesn’t get enough love. Technically, it’s meant to be an everyday running shoe, but I’ve found it to be fantastic for walking on pavement and trails, casual jogs, bike rides, and even the occasional functional strength workout.

The Mach 5 features a lower-profile midsole than Hoka’s more well-known pairs (like the Clifton or Bondi, which have literal platforms of cushion), giving them a more grounded feel and making them slimmer to pack. But just because they don’t have inches of cushion doesn’t mean they aren’t cloudlike. In fact, it’s the special ProFly+ midsole layer that makes these even more comfortable than other Hokas I’ve tried. They have neutral stability and responsive cushion, which helps send energy back up into your legs while feeling like you’re walking on memory foam. They make a great travel sneaker since they’re also super light, weighing 6.8 ounces compared to the Hoka Bondi 8 , for example, which weighs 8.9.

Lauren Mazzo

The creel jacquard mesh upper is super light and breathable, making this a great shoe for warm-weather travel or exercise. (Because they’re so ventilated, they’re not water-or weather-proof, so keep that in mind if you’re looking for a shoe to wear in wet or rainy destinations.) I’ve worn them for walks and hikes in Hawai’i, Colorado, Portugal, and Argentina, in spring, summer, and fall temps, and despite the fact that they’re not trail-specific shoes, they have pretty decent grip.

My pair is a unique colorway from the brand’s Ironman collection , and it’s nearly sold out — but you can get the Mach 5 in 14 other colors on Zappos, including a solid white or black, in case you want something that matches with more of your travel looks. No matter which color you choose, they have a low-profile tongue and knitted laces with a really premium feel.

The Mach 5 has a 4-star rating on Zappos (after nearly 1,000 reviews), and a 4.5-star rating on the Hoka website . Zappos customers who’ve reviewed the sneakers can back up my claims that they’re impressively comfy: “I feel like I'm walking on clouds when I wear my Mach 5's,” wrote one buyer. Many others call the Mach 5 a godsend for long days spent on your feet, whether it’s for work or travel. Another Zappos shopper wrote: “I am a clinical in the medical device world and cardiac surgery can take hours of standing on your feet. These shoes are amazing. I never realized how much my feet hurt after working all day and flying to the next surgical procedure [until] I wore these and my feet feel amazing after a full day.”

Another Zappos customer purchased these sneakers specifically for a walking-heavy trip and was more than pleased with their performance. “I bought these shoes for a trip my husband and I were taking, knowing we would walk a lot, be hiking up hills, etc.” they wrote. “[I]n the first almost two weeks we've walked over 100 miles, done over a hundred flights of stairs and my feet feel wonderful. No blisters, no cramps, nothing. I'm a new loyal fan.”

Sneaker choice is very personal, and this style may not work as well for you as it does for me and these other reviewers. The Mach 5 offers neutral support — meaning, they have a symmetrical bed of cushion and don’t try to prevent your foot from rolling inward the way stability sneakers do. If you have lower arches or your feet tend to roll inward when walking or running (called overpronation), stability sneakers could be a better fit for you. If you’re looking for a light and easy travel sneaker that’ll feel great even when walking for miles, though, you may have found your perfect fit.

I’ve had my pair of Mach 5s for about four months now, and they look well-loved because they are. They’ve earned their place in my limited travel shoe selection — and are so comfortable and bouncy that they even led me to go for my first (very slow) run in years. If you’re heading out for an active trip and need a do-it-all sneaker rec, or are looking for a shoe that’ll keep you feeling good after hours on your feet, I can wholeheartedly say these will treat you right.

Travel Better, Cheaper, Longer

The Chase Sapphire Reserve Review

Nomadic Matt holding his Chase Sapphire Reserve credit card on a backdrop of a marbled kitchen counter

Nomadic Matt has partnered with CardRatings for our coverage of credit card products. Nomadic Matt and CardRatings may receive a commission from card issuers.

The upgraded version of the Chase Sapphire Preferred, the card_name is my one of my favorite premium cards. It offers a lot of fantastic perks for avid travelers.

While The Platinum Card® from American Express gets all the fanfare in terms of luxury rewards cards , I personally prefer the Chase Sapphire Reserve. It comes with better points-earning bonus categories; more practical, everyday perks (which I’ll get into below); and more comprehensive travel insurance.

Today, I want to share a bit more about this card so you can determine whether it’s the right card for you.

Table of Contents

What is the Chase Sapphire Reserve?

Chase sapphire reserve travel insurance, using your chase ultimate rewards® points, taking advantage of chase’s transfer partners, chase sapphire reserve vs chase sapphire preferred, pros of the chase sapphire reserve, cons of the chase sapphire reserve, who is the chase sapphire reserve for.

The card_name (often referred to as CSR) is a travel rewards card issued by Chase. The card comes with a $550 USD annual fee and a host of benefits like lounge access, travel insurance, and an array of statement credits. When used right, these benefits can be worth much more than the annual fee.

One of those benefits is a $300 USD annual travel credit that is very easy to get, effectively reducing the annual fee to a more reasonable $250 USD. You don’t need to do anything extreme to receive this benefit either; the first $300 USD per year that you spend on travel is simply erased from your statement.

Chase also has a very broad definition of what it classifies as travel, making it easy to take advantage of this credit (even parking garages count towards it). According to Chase, they classify travel purchases as including:

“airlines, hotels, motels, timeshares, car rental agencies, cruise lines, travel agencies, discount travel sites, campgrounds and operators of passenger trains, buses, taxis, limousines, ferries, toll bridges and highways, and parking lots and garages.”

So, the first $300 USD of purchases you make in any of these categories will be removed from your statement, and after that, you’ll earn 3x points on these purchases.

And that’s just one benefit of the card. When you sign up for this card, you’ll get:

  • 60,000 points (after spending $4,000 in the first 3 months)
  • $300 annual travel credit
  • 3x points on travel (earned after earning your $300 annual travel credit)
  • 3x points on dining, including eligible delivery services and takeout
  • 5x points on flights when booked through Chase
  • 10x points on hotels and rental cars when booked through Chase
  • 10x points on Lyft + 2-year Lyft Pink membership
  • Priority Pass Membership and access to Sapphire Lounges by The Club
  • $100 credit toward Global Entry or TSA Pre-Check every 4 years
  • 1 year of complimentary Instacart+ membership (includes up to $15 in statement credits each month through July 2024)
  • Complimentary DashPass membership (includes $5 in DoorDash credits each month)
  • Travel insurance including emergency medical and dental coverage, emergency evacuation insurance, trip delay coverage, primary car rental insurance, lost luggage reimbursement, and trip cancellation insurance
  • No foreign transaction fees

The card_name also offers the most comprehensive travel insurance out of any credit card and is one of the only ones to include any kind of medical insurance. It’s my top pick as the best credit card for travel insurance .

As a Visa Infinite® card, the Chase Sapphire Reserve’s travel insurance includes the following:

  • Primary car rental insurance up to $75,000 USD
  • Travel accident insurance up to $1,000,000 USD
  • Trip cancelation/interruption coverage up to $10,000 USD per person and $20,000 USD per trip
  • Trip delay coverage of $500 USD after delays of six hours or more
  • Lost luggage coverage up to $3,000 USD
  • $100 per day for up to five days if your baggage is delayed
  • Emergency medical and dental coverage up to $2,500 USD for treatment (minus a $50 USD deductible)
  • Emergency evacuation insurance up to $100,000 USD

While I always recommend purchasing a separate travel insurance policy , having coverage through your credit card is an added benefit that you get at no additional cost.

With this card, you’ll earn Chase Ultimate Rewards® points. You can use those points like you would any other rewards program: to get cash back, book travel directly, or transfer them to travel partners. You can also redeem them for Amazon or Apple purchases, but these are bad redemption values and I would not recommend using points this way.

The easiest option is to redeem your points for travel in the Chase Travel portal, which works like booking through Expedia or any other online travel agency. When you do this, you’re basically using your points as cash, at a value of 1.5 cents per point. So, for example, if you have 50,000 points, they’ll be worth 75,000 points when redeemed through the portal. This is a better value than if you simply redeem your points directly as cash, as you’ll only get a value of 1 cent per point that way.

Using your points in the Chase Travel portal is very straightforward, making it an attractive option for points and miles newbies . If this is the only way that you’ll use your points, then using them is better than letting them sit around!

Just know that there are pros and cons to using the travel portal. Namely, you can usually get more for your points when you transfer them to Chase’s 14 transfer partners (which is what you should be doing with your points).

The ability to transfer to its partners is what makes Chase Ultimate Rewards® points so valuable. You can usually find airline and hotel redemptions where you can get much more than 1.5 cents per point. While the actual value you can get varies greatly based on flight or hotel, a good benchmark is The Points Guy’s monthly valuation chart , which values Chase Ultimate Rewards® points at over 2 cents per point when used as transferable points.

To give a real-life example, the 50,000 points from the example above could be an off-peak, round-trip economy fare from New York to Paris when redeemed through the portal. But if you transfer points to one of Chase’s partner airlines, you can take advantage of flash deals and saver space, potentially finding the same fare for up to 50% less points. Unless it’s a super cheap flight or hotel room (less than $150 USD), I always transfer points to their travel partners, especially when booking business class flights or fancy hotel rooms. You just get more bang for your buck.

Transferring to airline and hotel partners is a bit more work than using the portal, but there are more tools than ever to help you maximize your points. For example, you can use point.me for finding flights with points and Awayz for finding award hotel stays.

Chase’s current transfer partners are:

Airline Transfer Partners:

  • Aer Lingus, AerClub
  • Air Canada Aeroplan
  • British Airways Executive Club
  • Emirates Skywards®
  • Flying Blue AIR FRANCE KLM
  • Iberia Plus
  • JetBlue TrueBlue
  • Singapore Airlines KrisFlyer
  • Southwest Airlines Rapid Rewards®
  • United MileagePlus®
  • Virgin Atlantic Flying Club

Hotel Travel Partners:

  • IHG® Rewards Club
  • Marriott Bonvoy®
  • World of Hyatt®

By this point, you might be wondering what makes this card different from its sibling, the Chase Sapphire Preferred . Both cards currently have the same welcome offer: 60,000 points after you spend $4,000 in the first 3 months of account opening. Both also earn 3x points on dining. You also get travel insurance with both cards, though the insurance offered with the Reserve is much more comprehensive.

Given all that, is the Reserve really worth the higher annual fee?

Ultimately, that’s up to you to decide based on your spending, travel habits, and whether you value the Reserve’s extra perks and benefits. But keep in mind that the real difference in cost between these two cards is only $155 USD per year. Sure, that’s considering the $300 USD annual travel credit on the Reserve, but I’m guessing that anyone thinking of getting a travel rewards card spends at least $300 USD on travel per year. And if you do, you’re likely to come out ahead with the Chase Sapphire Reserve due to the ability to earn points faster, use statement credits, and take advantage of luxury perks like airport lounge access.

Here’s a quick cheat sheet of the main differences:

  • Great rewards-earning rates
  • Large welcome offer
  • $300 USD travel credit
  • 14 fantastic transfer partners
  • Excellent travel insurance
  • Statement credits for Global Entry/TSA Precheck (every 4 years)
  • Airport lounge access through Priority Pass membership and access to Sapphire lounges
  • Complimentary memberships (including Lyft Pink, DashPass, InstaCart)
  • Large annual fee ($550 USD per year)
  • $75 USD authorized user fee

This card is best for frequent travelers. If you get this card, you’ll want to be able take advantage of the card’s accelerated earning rates on travel and dining, travel statement credits, and other travel-specific benefits. You’ll get even more out of this card if you value perks like airport lounge access and expediting your airport experience through Global Entry/TSA Precheck, and will transfer your points to one of Chase’s transfer partners.

If you’re only a semi-regular traveler, you might be better served by the Chase Sapphire Preferred. This comprehensive review has everything you need to know about that card .

The card_name is one of the best travel rewards cards out there. It comes with a high welcome offer, lots of perks, and robust points-earning capabilities so that you can quickly stack up valuable Chase Ultimate Rewards points. You get a ton of value with this card. I think it’s worth a spot in the wallet of any frequent traveler.

Book Your Trip: Logistical Tips and Tricks

Book Your Flight Find a cheap flight by using Skyscanner . It’s my favorite search engine because it searches websites and airlines around the globe so you always know no stone is being left unturned.

Book Your Accommodation You can book your hostel with Hostelworld . If you want to stay somewhere other than a hostel, use Booking.com as it consistently returns the cheapest rates for guesthouses and hotels.

Don’t Forget Travel Insurance Travel insurance will protect you against illness, injury, theft, and cancellations. It’s comprehensive protection in case anything goes wrong. I never go on a trip without it as I’ve had to use it many times in the past. My favorite companies that offer the best service and value are:
