Explore Amber Fort and Palace

TripSavvy / Alicia Erikson

Like something out of a fairy tale, Amber Fort sits atop a hill overlooking Maota Lake about 30 minutes north of the city center. Maharaja Man Singh I, who led Mughal Emperor Akbar's army, commenced constructing the fort in 1592. It was the home of Kachwaha Rajput rulers until Maharaja Sawai Jai Singh II relocated their capital to Jaipur city in 1727. Inside is a series of lavish palaces, halls, gardens, and temples. Elaborate mirror work adds to the grandeur. Amber Fort is open daily from 8 a.m. until 5.30 p.m. Many people choose to remain there for the evening sound and light show that brings to life the fort's history, night viewing, and dinner at opulent restaurant 1135 AD (which was once the king's private dining room). The fort reopens, evocatively illuminated, from 6:30 p.m. to 9:15 p.m. The entry fee during the day for those who don't have a government composite ticket is 100 rupees for Indians and 500 rupees for foreigners. See the World's Largest Cannon on Wheels

Maharaja Sawai Jai Singh II built Jaigarh Fort in 1726 to protect Amber Fort. This fort holds great appeal for military lovers, as it contains the world's largest cannon on wheels. The cannon has never been fired though, and neither has the fort been captured. As a result, it has remained impressively intact over its long life. In fact, the fort is one of the best-preserved military structures of medieval India. Jaigarh doesn't have the delicate palace interiors of Amber Fort, and therefore appears as a real fortress. Climb Diwa Burj watchtower to get an outstanding view over the plains. The fort is situated above Amber Fort and can be reached on foot (if you're fit!). It's open from 9.30 a.m. to 5.30 p.m. daily. Those who don't have a City Palace composite ticket must pay an entry fee of 50 rupees for Indians and 100 rupees for foreigners.

Admire the Remarkable Water Palace

Jaipur's remarkable Jal Mahal (Water Palace) appears to magically float on Man Sagar Lake near Amber Fort. Not a lot is known about its history but Maharaja Sawai Madho Singh I is thought to have made it a lodge for royal duck hunting trips in the mid 18th century. The palace actually has four floors that are submerged below the water, with specially designed lime mortar to prevent water seepage. Unfortunately, despite being renovated, the palace not yet open to the public, so you'll have to be content with viewing it from the side of the lake.

Spend Sunset at Nahargarh Fort

Compact yet robust Nahargarh Fort (also known as Tiger Fort) is perched high on the rugged Aravali Hills northwest of Jaipur city. Sawai Jai Singh II commissioned it in 1734 to help strengthen the security of his new capital. It found fame in 2006, after scenes from the hit Bollywood movie Rang De Basanti were filmed there. The fort provides spectacular views over the city, particularly at sunset. Inside, the highlight is the Madhavendra Bhavan palace complex, which is the backdrop for the new Sculpture Park. There's also a wax museum, elegant fine-dining restaurant called Once Upon a Time, and a budget government-run restaurant called Padao. If you don't have a government composite ticket, you'll need to pay an entry fee of 50 rupees or Indians and 200 rupees for foreigners to access the palace part of the fort. Those who are feeling energetic can hike up to the fort from the Old City. The main palace part is open from 10 a.m. to 5.30 p.m. daily. Refer to this essential guide to Nahargarh Fort for more information.

Relax at the Royal Cenotaphs

Donyanedomam /Getty Images

Despite being included in the City Palace composite ticket, the Gatore ki Chhatriyan cenotaphs at the foothills of Nahargarh Fort are overlooked by most tourists. This makes them delightfully restful most of the time. The superbly carved cenotaphs honor Jaipur's deceased kings, from Sawai Jai Singh ll to Man Singh ll. The most impressive cenotaph is dedicated to Maharaja Sawai Jai Singh ll. It's made out of white marble, has 20 pillars, and is decorated in carvings of Hindu gods and people. The cenotaph complex is open daily from 9.30 a.m. to 5 p.m. Take the Jaipur-Amber Road and turn off near Jal Mahal to get there. The entry fee for those who don't have a City Palace composite ticket is 40 rupees for Indians and 100 rupees for foreigners. Nearby Garh Ganesh temple is worth visiting too.

The cost is 1,000-1,100 rupees per person for Indians and 1,300-1,500 rupees for foreigners. Timings are flexible.

Pose for Photos Inside Patrika Gate

skaman306 /Getty Images

Jaipur's ninth and most colorful gate, Patrika Gate, graces the entrance to Jawahar Circle garden five minutes north of Jaipur airport. This recently constructed but traditional-style ornamental gate is named after the Rajasthani newspaper and media company, Patrika. Its interior walls are covered in splendid paintings depicting scenes from daily life and various regions in Rajasthan. Not surprisingly, it's one of the most popular places for photo shoots in Jaipur.

Get Up Close to Monkeys

The rather ruinous but holy Galtaji temple is nestled between two granite cliffs at the far eastern edge of the city. It's part of a larger temple complex, which also has three sacred pools of water. One of the pools has been taken over by thousands of monkeys that congregate there to swim and bathe. They're generally friendly and love to be fed. Unfortunately, the area is not well maintained. Be prepared to encounter dirt and trash, as well as people who will coerce you to pay money. Visit late afternoon, near sunset, when the monkeys flock to the temple. To get there, from the road walk up the hill to the white Sun Temple, and then follow the steps downhill into the gorge.

Take a Hot Air Balloon Flight

Sorin Rechitan/EyeEm/Getty Images

Jaipur is one of the most majestic spots for hot air balloon flights in India. Skywaltz operates two different routes. The main one is just north of Jaipur, surrounding Amber fort. The balloons drift over local villages, forts, and palaces. The other route covers the untouched area around Samode Palace and village. Starting points vary depending on wind speed and direction. The duration of the flight is about an hour, and the cost is from $190 per person. The season extends from September to April.

Shop 'Til You Drop

Maremagnun/Getty Images

Thanks to Maharaja Sawai Jai Singh II, who turned Jaipur into a commercial hub by inviting artisans and traders to settle there, the city is a great place to shop! You'll find an enticing variety of goods including precious gemstones , silver jewelry, bangles, clothes, perfumes, blue pottery, and textiles. The lanes in the Old City's bazaars are each dedicated to specific handicrafts. In Tripolia Bazaar, head to crowded Maniharon ka Rasta for lacquer bangles (Awaz Mohammed is an award-winning bangle-maker). Inexpensive jewelry is sold at Johari Bazaar, while Bapu Bazaar has textiles. Metal-workers occupy Thateron ka Rasta, Jhalaniyon Ka Rasta has spice sellers, and Khajanewalon Ka Rasta is the place for marble statues. M.I. Road is lined with upmarket branded stores. Here are some top places to go shopping in Jaipur. Alternatively, Virasat Experiences offers shopping tours to local markets. Do note that many stores are closed on Sundays.

Be Dazzled at the Wholesale Flower Market

Tuul & Bruno Morandi/Getty Images

Early risers shouldn't miss the fragrant wholesale flower market, known as phool mandi , which takes place just inside the Old City's Chandi ki Taksal Gate. It gets underway at around 6 a.m., with traders selling sacks filled to the brim with bright blooms such as marigolds and roses. The flowers are used by garland makers, as offerings in temples, and as decorations for weddings. Combine your visit with the neighboring fruit and vegetable market as well. If it's a Saturday, the Hatwara flea market pops up there too and is delightfully free of tourists.

View an Egyptian Mummy

Jui-Chi Chan/Getty Images

Jaipur's Albert Hall Museum is housed in a magnificent old Indo-Saracenic building that was completed in 1187. It's Rajasthan's oldest museum and has an eclectic collection with many items from the city's past including portraits of kings, costumes, jewelry, woodcarvings, paintings, sculptures and pottery. However, the most notable exhibit is an Egyptian mummy, belonging to the Ptolemaic dynasty. Unfortunately photography isn't allowed. The museum is open daily from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., and again for night viewing from 7 p.m. to 10 p.m. when it's illuminated. The entry fee for those who don't have a government composite ticket is 40 rupees for Indians and 300 rupees for foreigners. Night entry tickets are 100 rupees per person irrespective of nationality.

Discover Rajasthan's Arts and Crafts

The Rajasthan government recently converted the Rajasthan School of Arts building in the Old City into a museum dedicated to the state's arts and crafts. The Museum of Legacies opened in 2017 and is housed in a mansion that was originally constructed in 1823 as the residence of Pandit Shivdeen (a minister in the court of Maharaja Ram Singh II). The building itself is one of the main attractions. Its five galleries are spread over three floors, and each displays a collection curated by a noteworthy individual in the arts scene in India. Indigenous arts are a feature. The museum also has a dedicated space for young artists to exhibit their works. It's open from noon to 8 p.m. daily except Mondays (closed). Entry is free.

Attend a Cultural Performance or Exhibition

siraanamwong/Getty Images

The most prominent arts center in Jaipur, Jawahar Kala Kendra sprawls across 9.5 acres of landscape grounds about 10 minutes south of the Old City. Following its recent revamp, it has come alive with regular exhibitions from a range of genres such as photography and architecture, seminars, workshops, dance and music recitals, and theater shows. The center has two permanent art galleries, six exhibition galleries, a library, and coffee house that portrays lesser-known aspects of astronomy through art work. It's open from 9.30 a.m to 9 p.m. on weekdays, and 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. on weekends.

Admire Gorgeous Antique Jewelry

Amrapali Museum is another new museum in Jaipur. This one opened in 2018 and is India's first museum dedicated to jewelry and jeweled objects. As its name suggests, it was founded by Amrapali, a renowned Indian luxury jewelry house favored by Bollywood stars. All the exhibits in this remarkable museum are from the personal collection of the brand's owners, which they've amassed over 40 years from the time they started sourcing jewelry and opened their business. There are some very unusual items such as silver anklets for horses, a Parsi necklace with a hidden message, a holy water flask, bejeweled tooth cleaners, and ruby-studded back-scratcher with conceal blades. The museum is open from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. daily. Tickets cost 600 rupees per person and include an audio guide.

Sample Rajasthani Cuisine

Sergio Amiti/Getty Images

For all kinds of local street food in one spot, head to Masala Chowk -- an open-air food court in Ram Niwas Garden, close to Albert Hall Museum. Many of the city's much-loved street food vendors have stalls there. It's open daily from around 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. There's an entry fee of 10 rupees per person.

Chokhi Dhani serves up authentic rural cuisine in a recreated 12.5 acre Rajasthani village setting about 40 minutes south of Jaipur. It's quite touristy, with cultural performances such as puppet shows and folk dances, so is best suited to first-time visitors. Opening hours are 6 p.m. to 11 p.m. daily.

Foodies may also like to discover the ingredients and essentials of Rajasthani cooking on this food walk in the Old City or culinary cooking experience in a local home, offered by Virasat Experiences.

Enjoy Indian Masala Chai

hadynyah/Getty Images

India's roadside masala chai (spiced tea) is ubiquitous but not all tourists feel comfortable drinking it from a stall. You can enjoy delicious masala chai in a cool, clean environment at Tapri the Tea House. where roadside chai meets hipster hangout. Tapri Central on Prithviraj Road in C-Scheme is the original and best of the three Tapri outlets in Jaipur.

If tea stalls are more your style, try the uniquely flavored tea at Sahu Chaiwala , opposite Sai Baba Mandir on Chaura Rasta in the Old City. This family-run tea stall was established in 1968. They slow boil the milk on a coal stove. It's open from 5 a.m. to 11 p.m. Gulab Ji Chai's long-running stall on M.I. Road also has a loyal following. Their chai is now available at the new and cute D'Good Cafe in Bani Park.

Have a Drink at Bar Palladio

Bar Palladio

Bar Palladio, at the historic Narain Niwas Palace Hotel, is possibly Jaipur's most photogenic bar. Renowned Dutch designer Marie-Anne Oudejans created its interiors, and they are stunning. The bar is an ideal spot for a post-sightseeing cocktail or gin, accompanied by delicious Italian food. It's open daily from 6 p.m. to 11 p.m. In the evening, the atmosphere is magical, with tented garden pavilions and candlelight.

See a Bollywood Movie at Raj Mandir

Andrew Bain/Getty Images

A lot of people who go to see a movie at Raj Mandir on Bhagwant Das Road (near M.I. Road) do so to mainly to have a look inside. Its owner, a reputed Jaipur jeweler, wanted to create a cinema that makes the audience feel like they're a guest of a royal palace. The way it has been designed -- resplendent with spiral staircase, antique chandeliers, and a ceiling that changes color -- is certainly intriguing. Movies, in Hindi, are screened in the afternoons and evenings.

Stay in Heritage Hotel

Glowimages/Getty Images

Immerse yourself in Jaipur's regal heritage by staying in an authentic palace hotel, or a less costly hertiage property. There are plenty to choose from. The magnificent Taj Rambagh Palace used to be the home of the Maharaja of Jaipur and is the pick of the bunch if budget isn't a constraint. It's worth treating yourself! Sujan Raj Mahal Palace (immaculately renovated in 2014) and Samode Haveli are other top luxury options. For somewhere a bit less costly, check out Diggi Palace, Alsisar Haveli , Narain Niwas Palace , and Shahpura House . 150 year-old Arya Niwas is recommended for budget travelers.

Support Indian Textile Traditions

Nila House is a contemporary new non-profit hub for the preservation and promotion of traditional Indian crafts. It opened in October 2019, in a converted 1940s bungalow on Prithviraj Road, with the aim of facilitating interaction and collaborations with local artisans and weavers. The space has studios, showrooms, an archive and research library, exhibition gallery, textiles vault, and artists-in-residence rooms. Products designed and made in-house are retailed in a store on the premises. Regular craft-focused workshops and seminars take place there as well. Nila House is open daily, except Sundays, from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m.

Learn About Block Printing

The Anokhi Museum of Block Printing, in a restored heritage mansion near Amber fort, is an absorbing attraction for those interested in this handicraft. It's open from 10.30 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesday to Saturday, and 11 a.m. to 4.30 p.m. on Sunday. Plan ahead to be there for one of the regular block printing demonstrations and workshops.

You can also visit Bagru village, about an hour southwest of Jaipur. The whole village is dedicated to block printing. You'll be able to see the artisans and watch them in action. You'll also get to view the fabric drying in the sun. Vedic Walks and Studio Bagru offer guided trips and workshops.

Hike in the Hills

It may come as a surprise that the wall surrounding Amber is the third longest in the world (after the Great Wall of China and Rajasthan's Kumbhalgarh fort ). A hike along it will take you through the Aravali mountain range to an ancient temple, lake, villages, and some old royal hunting lodges. Plus, you'll be rewarded with captivating views and an amazing sense of perspective. Set aside about five hours to complete the trek. Various companies offer guided trips if you don't want to do it alone. Virasat Experiences conducts a shorter two-hour hike to a tribal village .

Befriend Elephants

Dera Amer Wilderness Camp

There are plenty of places to spend time with India's much-loved pachyderms in the elephant care village near Amber fort. Elefantastic is the most popular one. You'll be able to wash, feed and walk the elephants, and learn about their medicines and treatments. The elephants aren't chained up or ridden there. However, do be aware that they work at Amber fort in the morning. Foreigners can expect to pay 4,000-5,100 rupees per adult for the day. Discounts are available for children. The price for Indian adults is 2,000-3,500 rupees. This includes all activities and a vegetarian meal.

An alternative is Dera Amer Wilderness Camp, about 30 minutes from Jaipur at the foothills of the Aravali mountains. They have three resident female elephants that were adopted from Amber fort and roam around the property. Guests can interact with them and bathe them.

Visit or Volunteer at Ladli

Ladli is a non-profit vocational training center and residential shelter that supports underprivileged women and children, including orphans and abused children who have been rescued from the streets. The children are looked after, educated, and taught how to make beautiful quality handicrafts such as jewelry, which you can buy. It's a happy and inspiring place that encourages visitors and volunteers. Your kids will have fun playing with the younger children there. Call ahead and the center will arrange free transport for you, as its backstreet location is difficult to find. A couple of hours is required to fully see and appreciate everything.

Experience a Festival

Paul Beinssen/Getty Images

The iconic Jaipur Literature Festival takes place every year towards the end of January. From modest beginnings in 2006, it has evolved into the largest literary festival in Asia-Pacific. More than 100,000 people attend the hundreds of sessions held over five days. Major religious festivals celebrated in Jaipur include the Kite Festival (in mid January), Holi/Dhulandi (in March), Gangaur (in late March or early April), Teej (in late July or August), and Diwali (in late October or early November).

"The Pink City"

Jaipur tourism.

Jaipur, the capital city of Rajasthan, stands as a jewel in the crown of the Golden Triangle , alongside Delhi and Agra. The Pink City is a testament to the royal heritage of Rajasthan, known for its magnificent palaces, vibrant bazaars, and imposing forts.

One of the largest cities in India, Jaipur is also home to all the modern amenities with some of the most exotic hotels and resorts in the world. The city boasts an international airport and is also very well connected by rail and road. This makes Jaipur the gateway to Rajasthan - the starting point for places to visit in the interiors of the state. The city is a treasure trove of must-visit attractions, with the Hawa Mahal (Palace of Winds) standing as an iconic symbol of Jaipur's architectural prowess. The Amber Fort , another jewel in Jaipur's crown, showcases the grandeur of Rajput architecture.  Jaipur is home to UNESCO World Heritage Sites, including the Jantar Mantar and the City Palace .  Exploring Jaipur is incomplete without a stroll through its bustling markets. The Johari Bazaar and Bapu Bazaar are famous for their traditional Rajasthani jewelry, textiles, and handicrafts. The city is also very well known for its local cuisine , and the most famous dishes include the Ghewar, Pyaaz Kachori and Dal Baati Churma. The city also hosts the Jaipur Literary Festival , which is Asia's biggest festival of its kind. The city's vibrant culture comes alive during festivals like Diwali and Holi , with lively processions, cultural performances, and colorful celebrations. Rajputs ruled Jaipur for many centuries and developed as a planned city in the 17th century AD. With the old city surrounded by walls and gates decorated with drawings on the backdrop of a beautiful pink hue, Jaipur, the pink city, successfully retains its old-world charm.

16 Top-Rated Attractions & Places to Visit in Jaipur

Written by Joni Sweet Updated Mar 24, 2023

No trip to India is complete without spending time in Jaipur. Affectionately nicknamed "The Pink City" for the blushing color of its historic buildings, Jaipur is a princely wonderland of culture and heritage.

The best places to visit in Jaipur showcase the royalty of Rajasthan — and you don't have to walk far to see many of the top attractions. Start by touring City Palace , a nearly 300-year-old palace with special courtyards, structures, gardens, and temples.

Just next door is Jantar Mantar, a centuries-old attraction with giant astronomical instruments commissioned by the founder of the city. A 10-minute walk from here brings you to Hawa Mahal , a red-and-pink sandstone structure. Its distinctive lattice design allowed royal women to get a peek at public life while remaining unseen in the 19th century.

Ready to make your trip to "The Paris of India" a memorable experience? Map out your itinerary with our guide to the top attractions and places to visit in Jaipur.

City Palace in Jaipur

City Palace has stood at the heart of the Old City of Jaipur for nearly three centuries, shortly after Maharaja Sawai Jai Singh II decided to relocate his court from the city of Amber. Protected by huge guard walls, the fairy-tale-like structure is still the home of the city's modern-day royal family and endures as one of the top places to visit in Jaipur.

City Palace is more than a sand-colored regal abode — it's a sprawling complex of buildings built around a series of landscaped garden courtyards overlooking Jaipur and Lake Palace. The entire property is a stunning display of Rajasthani and Mughal architecture.

The current occupants reside in the most eye-catching building, the Chandra Mahal , an elegant structure with curved eaves and domed rooftops. Each of its seven stories features an entirely different style. The ground floor is included in the price of admission, but you'll need to book a private tour to go upstairs.

Other noteworthy places for sightseeing at City Palace include the Mubarak Mahal (Welcome Palace), which contains displays of dazzling costumes and textiles; the Armoury, a museum-like space dedicated to preserving finely crafted daggers and swords; Pritam Niwas Chowk (Peacock Courtyard), which has mesmerizing doorways painted to look like the feathers of its namesake bird; and Diwan-i-Am (Hall of Public Audience), which showcases the palace's exquisite collection of miniature paintings.

After exploring the palace, check out the Friends of the Museum Bazaar . It has some of Jaipur's highest quality souvenirs (with equally high prices).

Address: Tulsi Marg, Gangori Bazaar, J.D.A. Market, Pink City, Jaipur

Jantar Mantar

At first glance, Jantar Mantar may look to be nothing more than a bunch of larger-than-life abstract sculptures. But this is not an art gallery — this attraction contains a special collection of astronomical tools started by Rajput ruler Jai Singh II to measure the heavens nearly 300 years ago.

Each of the 20 or so structures at this UNESCO World Heritage Site serves a distinctive purpose. The observatory's massive sundial, known as Samrat Yantra , is particularly striking. At 27 meters tall, it casts a huge shadow that accurately measures time down to two seconds.

The elaborate Jai Prakash also tracks the passing of time, using the shadow of a metal plate suspended above a sunken bowl-like structure. The ingenious Rama Yantra, a circular walled structure, can locate the precise positions of celestial objects. Other tools at the observatory can track stars and even predict eclipses.

Hot tip: It's worth hiring a private guide at Jantar Mantar if you want to learn how each of the structures works.

Address: Gangori Bazaar, J.D.A. Market, Pink City, Jaipur

Hawa Mahal

If you had any preconceived notions about how the buildings in Jaipur look, they probably came from Hawa Mahal (Palace of Breeze). A top place to visit in Jaipur, this structure has all of the distinctive architectural features that appear in postcards of the city, from the salmon-pink, honeycombed facade, built to resemble the crown of the Hindu god Krishna, to the geometric accents and rows of tiny windows.

The landmark was built in 1799 to allow royal ladies to watch festivals on the street without being seen by the public. Its 953 windows allow plenty of breezes to pass through, making it an ideal summer palace (and the perfect spot to get relief from Rajasthan's oppressive heat today).

Tourists can learn about the history of the sandstone structure at the palace's small museum — the ceremonial armor collection is particularly interesting. You can also wander the narrow hallways that run throughout the palace. Don't miss the colorful glasswork in windows and doorways, which cast an otherworldly glow on chambers throughout Hawal Mahal.

Address: Hawa Mahal Rd., Badi Choupad, J.D.A. Market, Pink City, Jaipur

Amber Fort

Jaipur is home to one of India's most-visited forts: Amber Fort. Built in the year 1592, the sandstone and marble monolith stands atop a small hill roughly 20 minute's driving distance northeast of the center of Jaipur. This attraction is best known for being a pristine example of Rajasthani architecture.

Getting to Amber Fort typically involves a short uphill hike that's well worth the effort. It's decked out with intricate patterns of inlaid marble in nearly every color of the rainbow. The fort is laid out into four separate sections, each of which has a spectacular garden courtyard outside. While you'd never know it from above, you can actually explore the fort's underground tunnels , some of which have been restored.

This UNESCO World Heritage Site has a fascinating history of legends, betrayals, and romance — but the best way for tourists to hear these stories is to hire a private guide at the Amber Fort.

Address: Devisinghpura, Amer, Jaipur

Albert Hall Museum

When English writer Rudyard Kipling visited the Albert Hall Museum in Jaipur, he wrote that it was a "rebuke to all other museums in India from Calcutta downwards." That's high praise coming from the son of a curator, and fitting for this renowned institution.

The oldest museum in Rajasthan, the Albert Hall Museum boasts an extensive collection of art and historically significant artifacts. Come for the Egyptian mummy ; stay to see antique coins from different periods in India's history, charming permanent exhibits of miniature paintings, 18th-century costumes worn by members of different castes, and a peculiar collection of 19th-century clay figures demonstrating all the yoga poses.

Hot tip: Visit the museum at night, when multicolored lights brighten the exterior of the alluring building.

Address: Museum Road, Ram Niwas Garden, Kailash Puri, Adarsh Nagar, Jaipur

Birla Mandir

In a city that seems to be dipped from top to bottom in pink, the stark white marble Birla Mandir stands out — big time. The Hindu temple pays tribute to Lakshmi, the goddess of wealth and purity, and Vishnu, one of the religion's main deities. It's one of the best places to visit in Jaipur for tourists and Hindu devotees alike.

The marvelous structure exudes a quiet, peaceful vibe, offering just the right atmosphere to appreciate fine marble carvings, shrines to gods, and gorgeous sunset views. While you don't need more than 30 minutes to get a sense of the space, the experience will prove to be a restorative break from a day of sightseeing.

Address: Jawahar Lal Nehru Marg, Tilak Nagar, Jaipur

Nahargarh Fort

When it comes to sightseeing around Jaipur, the views don't get better than what you'll find at Nahargarh Fort. Also known as Tiger Fort , this nearly 300-year-old attraction overlooks the entire city from atop the Aravalli Hills — a prime location for the structure to defend the city against enemies many years ago.

More than just a formidable barrier though, this fort also contains Madhavendra Bhawan , a summer destination for royalty. The sumptuous Rajasthani building features a dozen identical boudoirs for the queens, which all connect to the king's suite through mural-filled corridors.

Tourists can also explore the fort's wax museum and sculpture park. And if you're feeling hungry, swing by one of the fort's many restaurants to tuck into traditional Indian cuisine.

Address: Krishna Nagar, Brahampuri, Jaipur

Galta Ji

Sources of water can be few and far between in the desert state of Rajasthan. So it's no wonder that when people discovered a natural spring in a mountain pass in the Aravalli Hills , they honored it by building the Hindu temple Galta Ji.

Nestled between cliffs, the temple features a few sacred water tanks, some with modest fountains, as well as frescoes that tell tales about the Hindu god Krishna.

Galta Ji is also one of the best places to visit in Jaipur if you want to see monkeys . It's home to hundreds of macaques and langurs (hence its nickname, "The Monkey Temple"). Daring tourists might opt to buy a handful of peanuts at the gate to tempt the monkeys, but you're better off just watching the rambunctious creatures from a distance.

Indian bracelets with diamonds and jewels

When the founders of the beloved Indian jewelry brand Amrapali Jewels started collecting antique jewelry in the late 1970s, they realized that some of these one-of-a-kind treasures deserved to be preserved and displayed. And so the Amrapali Museum was born, instantly becoming one of the top places to visit in Jaipur.

The jewelry museum in Jaipur features two full floors of glistening jewels and objects from its 4,000-piece collection, showcasing the vast range of Indian craftsmanship.

The displays show just how seriously Rajasthani people take their gold, silver, and precious gems. Among the jewels, you'll see silver bands for horses' legs, a chariot fully covered in silver, embellished shoe covers, and a glorious crown for a groom from Himachal Pradesh.

While these pieces are for display only, there's an extensive range of necklaces, bracelets, and other wearables available for purchase at the Museum Shop.

Address: Ground Floor, K, 14/B, Ashok Marg, Panch Batti, C Scheme, Ashok Nagar, Jaipur

For much of history, Rajasthan's most important handicrafts and works of art lived in private collections that were unavailable for viewing by the majority of the public. That all changed when the Government of Rajasthan opened the Museum of Legacies in 2017.

Housed in a two-centuries-old mansion, this tourist attraction showcases an assortment of Indian embroidery, giant Rajasthani puppets, Pichwai paintings, and much more.

Don't miss the magnificent marble latticework. The amount of swirling detail the artisans were able to carve from such a strong, hard stone is hypnotic.

Address: Kishanpole Bazar Road, Modikhana, Jaipur

Jal Mahal on Man Sagar Lake

One look at the Jal Mahal, and you might think you're seeing a mirage. The graceful palace seems to float atop the twinkling Man Sagar Lake — a calm sight compared to the rest of the frenzied city.

While it appears to have just one story, the Water Palace has four other levels submerged beneath a reservoir. The government no longer allows tourists to visit the site, but you can stroll a pathway around the lake to catch gorgeous views of the attraction. At night, it's lit up in all its glory, casting a golden, glowing reflection on the water.

Rajasthani puppets for sale in Jaipur

Jaipur is a mecca for souvenirs. Markets in the Pink City brim with everything from costume jewelry and precious gemstones to embroidered textiles, cobalt blue pottery, and Rajasthani puppets.

For a no-hassle shopping experience, head to the Rajasthali Handicrafts Emporium across from Ajmeri Gate. The government-run shop sells high-quality traditional handicrafts, like blue pottery decorated with yellow flowers, sets of wooden carvings depicting Rajasthani characters, and hand-printed saris. The prices you see on these items are fixed, so while you won't be able to negotiate a discount, you can also avoid the headache of bargaining.

Johari Bazar is a jewelry lover's paradise. The market glitters from top to bottom with dozens of shops selling everything from costume jewelry to fine silver and gold. No matter your budget, you'll find something beautiful to take home from here.

Finally, don't leave Jaipur without a quick shopping trip to Bapu Bazar. Located just a few blocks southwest of Johari Bazaar, the tourist-favorite market is chock full of handcrafted trinkets, locally made textiles, bedazzled slippers, and souvenirs galore.

Jaigarh Fort

Perched on a hilltop overlooking the Amber Fort, Jaigarh Fort is one of the best places to visit in Jaipur if you want a remarkable view and up-close access to historical artifacts. It's best known for housing the Jaivana Cannon, which was considered to be the world's largest cannon on wheels when it was built in the early 18th century.

Visiting the attraction gives tourists an appreciation for the fort's role in keeping Jaipur and the surrounding area safe from invaders. Spread over a range of three kilometers, the fort features thick sandstone walls and a series of subterranean passages. It's thought to be the strongest of Jaipur's forts.

Beyond fortified, though, the fort was also an opulent place when it was in use. You can still see its majestic palace complex and intricate architecture on tours today.

Panna Meena ka Kund

Another one of the popular things to do in Amer after visiting the Amber Fort is taking a 10-minute walk south to visit Panna Meena ka Kund, a stepwell that dates back to the 16th century.

Locals used to come to this spot to fill their pots with water for rituals and household chores. It was also the go-to place to cool off from the intense desert heat.

Today, the attraction's primary purpose is as a backdrop for tourist photos — and for good reason. Its golden yellow hue and labyrinthine steps, which look like they were plucked from one of M.C. Escher's artworks, make for postcard-worthy images . But as tempting as it might be to enter the beautiful attraction for a selfie, Panna Meena ka Kund does not allow visitors to go inside, so keep your photo shoot to the exterior only.

Akshardham Temple in Jaipur at night

Akshardham Temple might look like an ancient site, but don't be fooled — this attraction was built in the 21st century as part of a series of 10 temples dedicated to the Hindu god Narayana (a form of Lord Vishnu).

Still, the 23-acre religious complex is an impressive place to spend the afternoon. The white marble and pink sandstone temple showcases the intricacy of Hindu architecture with its stone carvings of Hindu deities, animals, and scenery. Step inside to see massive pure-gold statues and pristine paintings. There's also a peaceful garden courtyard brimming with lush plants and a musical fountain just outside.

Address: Vidyut Nagar, Vaishali Nagar, Chitrakoot, Jaipur

Elephant Festival in Jaipur

Attending an annual festival is one of the top things to do in Jaipur, and the city's calendar is chock full of events.

In January, you can watch colorful creations fly through the sky during the International Kite Festival and get books signed by famous authors at the Jaipur Literature Festival.

The city hosts its Elephant Festival, during which the tusked animals are painted with Indian motifs and dressed in extravagant costumes, in February or March (depending on the moon cycle). And the two-day Teej Festival, a celebration that honors the union of Shiva and the goddess Parvati, occurs in July or August.

India's 'Pink City' Is a Stunning Mix of Palaces, Bazaars, and Luxury Hotels

Here are eight reasons to add Jaipur to your India itinerary.

Meena Thiruvengadam is a lifelong traveler and veteran journalist who has visited more than 50 countries across six continents. Her writing has appeared in The Wall Street Journal , Departures , TripSavvy , and other publications.

rajasthan jaipur tourism

Jaipur is a city of ancient forts and royal palaces, a place where visitors will find sweeping views of lush green hills and some of the finest hotels in the world.

Nicknamed the Pink City, Jaipur forms a point on the Golden Triangle, the tourism trail that connects the Indian capital New Delhi with Jaipur and Agra, home of the iconic Taj Mahal . It is the gateway to Rajasthan, the aptly named land of kings and a city steeped in history and early architectural innovation.

Here are eight reasons why you should add the Pink City to your India itinerary.

There's a palace for every day of the week.

Jaipur is a city with enough palaces to visit a new one every day of the week. Its most famous palace is Hawa Mahal , a five-story pink sandstone structure in the heart of the city. Hawa Mahal's exterior looks a bit like a honeycomb at first glance. Look a little closer and you'll notice the exquisite curves of 953 small windows.

Luxury hotels will make you feel like royalty.

Jaipur is a city with no shortage of luxury hotels boasting over-the-top dining and spa experiences. Several historic palaces have been reimagined as five-star hotels, giving visitors a window into what royal life may have been like in the era of Maharajas.

It's a shopper's paradise.

Jaipur is home to a collection of markets selling everything from jewelry, clothing, and textiles to marble statues. Johari Bazaar is one of the city's best-known markets and the place to shop for jewelry. Head to Tripolia Bazaar if you're in the market for a rug. Look for local shoes and clothing at Nehru Bazaar.

It's surrounded by historic forts.

Jaipur is a city surrounded by epic forts. Nahargarh Fort, Amer Fort, and Jaigarh Fort are open to tourists and offer epic views of the city and a unique window into the city's early defenses.

It really is a pink city.

Jaipur is nicknamed the Pink City, a nod to the color of the sandstone buildings at its core. These buildings have been a dusty shade of pink since 1876, when they were painted for a visit by Prince Albert, Queen Victoria's husband.

It's a shining example of early urban planning.

Cities in India can feel chaotic, their streets a labyrinth that can take a lifetime to learn. Jaipur is different. It was the first planned city in India and has been recognized as an early example of urban planning. There's still traffic, but the streets are built on a grid and that makes them a little easier to navigate than their counterparts in New Delhi and Mumbai.

You can make your dream of riding an elephant come true.

If ever you've dreamed of riding an elephant, you can have your chance in Jaipur. Elephant rides are available at Amber Fort and offer a comfortable ride up what would otherwise be a very steep climb to its entrance.

It's a city filled with art.

Jaipur's luxury hotels aren't the only place to sample Indian art in the Pink City. Visit one of the city's art galleries to see more, and maybe bring home your own piece of the pink city.

Jaipur is a gem, but it isn't the only gem in Rajasthan's crown. From Jaipur, it's easy to visit other famous Rajasthani cities including Udaipur, a picturesque city set around a collection of lakes, and Jodhpur, a Rajasthani city with its own iconic shade — blue.

Jaipur Travel Guide 2024 – The Magical Pink City of Rajasthan

If you’re heading to Jaipur to start your Rajasthan adventure, you’re in for a real treat as this is where your journey into India will really begin!

My heart always gives a little flutter when I start to see the first glimpses of the pink city in Rajasthan from the train window heading out of Delhi.

Well, although it’s nicknamed the pink city, it isn’t really pink. The buildings are actually more of a peach or orange colour.

But, it’s beautiful all the same. Jaipur is the capital of Rajasthan and it’s a busy, bustling city that is spread out over the old and the new.

The old side definitely has more culture but the new also provides some of the 21st-century comforts like shopping malls, bars, and clubs etc.

It can be quite a maze finding your way around, so here is an essential first-timers Jaipur travel guide to the Pink city (which isn’t pink lol).

jaipur travel guide

How to reach Jaipur in Rajasthan from Delhi or otherwise

Jaipur is easily accessible in India and it’s only 4 hours out of Delhi by train. The best train which I would personally recommend is the Shatabdi express which leaves early in the morning.

There are limited stops and you get fed breakfast which is great. I would personally recommend Cleartrip.com for booking train travel in India.

Read more of my Indian train travel tips here

I’m not sponsored, but I’ve struggled enough with the Indian rail company website to know it isn’t worth the stress! Jaipur also has an international airport, so you can fly in from Delhi in 45 minutes or so.

You can also get some really great deals on flights if you book far enough in advance. I would use flight apps like Skyscanner or Kiwi.com.

If you’re looking for your next destination out of Jaipur, you can head to Pushkar which is only 3 hours by bus. It’s one of the few peaceful towns of Rajasthan and one of my personal faves!

How to travel around Jaipur – the best ways to see the Pink City

As a lot of attractions are spread out in Jaipur it’s best to hire a Tuk-Tuk (petrol rickshaw), Tam-Tam (electric rickshaw), or Taxi for the day.

The going rate for a full day (8 hours in a Tuk or Tam) is 500 rupees. For a taxi, you’ll be paying 1600 rupees.

Uber also works in Jaipur so this could be an option if you’re wanting to only head to a few places.

You can load your card details and pay the metered price. This is most of the time cheaper than what Tuk-Tuks will charge!

Read my guide on how to use Uber in India here

Top Jaipur travel tips before you go

The rupee is king here and it’s recommended that you get cash. Although the ATM will probably give you 2000 rupee notes it’s best to change them into smaller change as soon as possible.

This will help when paying for attractions, shopping, transport etc.

The best places to stay in Jaipur

There are hundreds of budget options to choose from in Jaipur.

Personally, I’m a fan of the little boutique Haveli’s (traditional Rajasthan hotels) as I feel it just adds to the adventure of where I am!

Nearby the railway station there are a lot of midrange Havelis which will cost you around £30-40 per night.

I stayed at Umaid Bhawan in Jaipur.

If you’re looking for high-end luxury, look no further than the Rambagh Palace .

It has a hefty price tag but it looks SO worth the money if you have it spare. If you’d like to just peak inside they have a good cocktail bar and restaurant to visit.

The best things to do in Jaipur

The Amer Fort sits around 15 kilometres away from the main city of Jaipur, so you’ll need to get a Tuk-Tuk, Tam-Tam, or Taxi here.

I would recommend starting your day off here in the morning to beat the heat and the crowds!

This fort is the most beautiful in Rajasthan and showcases some fantastic history of Maharajas of old and royal apartments.

You can also get some awesome views of Jaipur and the Nahargarh Fort as it stands so high.

A lot of people choose to ride the elephants up the hill to arrive in style and although shamefully, I have done this in the past, I would recommend that you don’t.

A lot of these elephants face long-standing abuse from their owners and I felt quite uncomfortable seeing the way they were treated with bullhooks.

If you were looking for an elephant experience that is safe and kind for elephants, I would recommend Elephantastic which I will go into below.

Elephantastic

Elephantastic is truly a beautiful sanctuary for our wise old friends. Rahul, the owner, used to be a rider at the Amer fort.

But, when he saw how the elephants were treated for tourism he decided to rescue them from harm and make a safe haven for them in his sanctuary.

Rahul truly cares for his elephants and ensures they are kept safe from harm, that they’re well-fed, and have good medical treatment when needed.

When I booked my session, he wrote to me apologising for the fact that I wouldn’t be able to wash them as it was too cold for them in winter.

This is truly a testament to the fact that it’s not about making money, it’s about ensuring the elephants are happy and well.

In his human-elephant interaction programme, you will meet his friendly elephants which you can hug, feed sugar cane, paint (will natural safe paints of course), wash them, ride (if you want to) and have a chat with :).

Then, depending on your package, you will meet his family and be treated to a home-cooked meal which is delicious!

It was a really touching experience and one I have cherished as a highlight of my travels in India.

For more details and for travel packages, check out his awesome website . You will receive a reply almost instantly as the service is second to none.

Jaipur City Palace

The City Palace in Jaipur is quite a basic one. It’s not as grand as the one in Udaipur, but it does have some amazing architecture to marvel at.

The main thing which is quite iconic is the set of royal archway doors located in the centre.

This door is located on the cover of Lonely Planet for their Rajasthan and the north of India publication and I guess that’s why people want a click there!

They have a pretty café that serves up some amazing melt-in-the-middle chocolate muffins and you can see some traditional puppet shows in peak season.

I would recommend buying a tourist ticket which includes entrance into this palace, Jantar Mantar, Albert Hall Museum, Nahargarh/Jaigarh fort, and more. It’s around 1000 rupees but will save you money!

city palace jaipur

The palace of winds is the most iconic palace in Jaipur. But, as it’s on a busy road it’s quite easy to miss as you whizz by in the traffic!

When you get dropped off there is a little area to observe and take photos within the market street.

Unless you want a really bad angled photo that is almost vertical, I would head across the street to observe it in the many cafés there.

The wind café serves up some good food and a banging chai. When I first got to Hawa Mahal, there was a guy snake charming and offered for me to join!

Super-tourist in action here, but it was SO fun! At one point, the snake did get a little angry and so it was time I bolted haha.

Hanuman temple | Galta Ji Temple

This temple is also known as the monkey temple in Jaipur, but I got told off calling in that.

But, most tourists know it like this due to the massive tribe of monkeys which have made the place their home!

There are two parts to this place, on the one side there’s the part where you can meet the monkeys. There are so many making mischief around, so if you’re afraid of getting bitten, I would avoid it.

We hired a Bandar walla (monkey guy) to take us up to the top. We bought some monkey nuts and he will teach you how to feed and touch them. At first, I kept dropping the peanuts as soon as they got near.

But, after I became a little more comfortable I let them climb on my shoulder. I did also get an offer to be trained in the art of monkey calling. Two months is all he needed and I would be set. Nice offer, but I think I’ll give it a miss lol.

On the other side, is the part where there is a bathing area. One for women and one for men. I wouldn’t recommend it as it’s crawling with boys! The woman’s area was pretty much deserted.

Nahargarh fort

There are two forts in Jaipur, the Nahargarh fort and Jaigarh fort.

Nahargarh Fort has a far more impressive view and if you’re going to choose one let this be it.

There’s a cute restaurant at the end of the fort which provides the view in the below photo.

I think I paid like 50 rupees to get in but I got a drinks voucher to enjoy a coke with the view.

I was actually here to celebrate my first Diwali last year and so this fort provided a birds-eye view of all the colourful lights, fireworks, and fun!

The best places to eat in Jaipur

Chokhi dhani.

This tourist attraction some would deem tacky, but I absolutely LOVED it! It’s essentially a tourist cultural village, which gives you an insight into traditional Rajasthan culture.

You pay for your meal choice. You can have the traditional Indian tali non-Air Con, the Indian tali AC, and the International cuisine restaurant.

My friend and I chose the traditional A/C as we thought it would be more comfortable to eat.

A thali is essentially a tray that comes with little pots of traditional Indian foods. You’ll have curries, chutneys, rice, naan bread, dessert, and even buttermilk (YUK).

You’ll eat to the sound of traditional Rajasthan music which is really nice.

After, you can enjoy loads of entertainment which comes included in your ticket. Puppet shows, seeing how chapatis are made, camel rides, dancing, fortune-telling, and a cheap marketplace are all here.

You can even get some traditional henna done for free and dress up in traditional Rajasthan dress.

This photo kickstarted my trail of getting dressed up for photos on my trip to India. It’s just so fun.

I would highly recommend this if you’re stuck for somewhere to go in the evening, you won’t regret it! For more information see their website.

Café Palladio

When I first saw this café on Instagram, I couldn’t believe it was in Jaipur let alone India.

The design is flawless and the wallpaper is to die for! It looks like something out of a fairy tale. So, when I knew I was heading back to Jaipur I had to check it out.

The menu serves up international cuisine including my favourite pastry dessert Baklava!

Unfortunately, this was sold out when I got there (maybe it’s seasonal) and so I just went for coffee. It actually tasted like real coffee too, which was a welcome taste from Bru (cheap Indian coffee which tastes like water haha). It was only 110 rupees too which was a bargain for the setting.

Their food menu boasts fresh salads and Italian pasta dishes which actually have authentic ingredients.

A treat for the taste buds after so much curry! See my full review on Café Palladio here.

I absolutely love Jaipur and it’s somewhere I come back to time and time again.

It’s the definition of Rajasthani culture in action and it will stay with you months or even years after you’ve left.

If you’re looking for a place to celebrate Diwali, I would recommend coming here as it’s a special time to find yourself in the city.

The whole place is lit up in all different colours and beautiful fireworks. Make sure you don’t miss it when you’re in India.

@Sophie Pearce, Hi Sophie, I’ve really enjoyed your posts but it’s been a while and things change rapidly. It would bd great if people would update . Same wTrip Advisor forum some posts are now so old that it is not easy to plan with current information. I am currently in Jaipur . It is just so safe and easy to self guide around old city. Walk and take some rickshaws. Many electric. Obviously need transport to forts and out of town. But again I’m surprised that travellers feel persuaded to have guides. I get it supports local economy but can be tedious when we can read z guide! It can interfere w being in the moment and just enjoying!

Outstanding Universal Value

Brief synthesis

The City of Jaipur is an exceptional example of indigenous city planning and construction in South Asia. In a remarkable difference from the existing medieval practices where settlements developed in a more organic manner (that grew over a longer period of time, in layers, in response to local geography, topography, climate and socio-cultural systems including caste system and occupation), Jaipur was conceived and developed in a single phase in the 18th century CE with a grid-iron model inspired from the Prastara plan of the Vastu Shastra, a treatise of traditional Hindu architecture. This town plan later became a trendsetter for many 19th century CE towns in Rajasthan State and India. Built under the patronage of Sawai Raja Jai Singh II (ruled 1700 – 1743 CE), a project approach was taken towards the city construction where most of the city infrastructure, public and royal spaces were completed within a span of four years, from 1727 – 1731 CE along with special royal invitations to several traders inviting them to settle in this newly envisaged trade and commerce city.

Unlike other medieval cities of the region, Jaipur was deliberately planned as a new city located on the plains and open for trade, as opposed to cities on hilly terrain and military cities of the past, though its planning still responded to the surrounding hill tops in all topography. The site selected within the valley that lay to the south of the Amber hills was comparatively flat and undeveloped. It was also adequately protected, nestled within hills having an array of forts and defence posts. Thus, the new city could be planned as an inviting trade and commerce city with an ambitious vision of the ruler Sawai Jai Singh II and his architect- planner Vidyadhar.

The design of the new city was a breath-taking departure from the prevalent practices in city development in the sub-continent. Its urban morphology reflected the coming together of cultural elements from eastern and western planning, expressing a culture of a ‘trade and commerce city’ and townscape that is unparalleled anywhere in South Asia. Envisaged as a trade capital, the main avenues of the city were designed as markets, which still remain as characteristic bazaars of the city. Chaupar, or designed large public squares at the intersection of roads, is another feature that is distinct to Jaipur as are its single and multicourt havelis and haveli temples. Besides an exemplary planning, its iconic monuments such as the Govind Dev temple, City Palace, Jantar Mantar and Hawa Mahal excel in artistic and architectural craftsmanship of the period.

Jaipur is an expression of the astronomical skills, living traditions, unique urban form and exemplary innovative city planning of an 18th century city from India.

Criterion (ii): Jaipur is an exemplary development in town planning and architecture that demonstrates an amalgamation and important interchange of several ideas over the late medieval period. It shows an interchange of ancient Hindu, Mughal and contemporary Western ideas that resulted in the customised layout of the city. It is believed that Raja Jai Singh arrived at the final layout after a thorough analysis of several town plans sourced from across the globe. Following the grid-iron plan prevalent in the west but with traditional zoning, superimposed by the desire to rival Mughal cities, Jaipur reflected new concepts for a thriving trade and commerce hub that became a model for the later towns in the adjoining Shekhawati region and others parts of Western India.

Criterion (iv): Jaipur represents a dramatic departure from extant medieval cities with its ordered, grid-like structure – broad streets, crisscrossing at right angles, earmarked sites for buildings, palaces, havelis, temples and gardens, neighbourhoods designated for particular castes and occupations. The main markets, shops, havelis and temples on the main streets were constructed by the state, thus ensuring that a uniform street facade was maintained in Jaipur. The city planning of Jaipur remains a unique response to the terrain that amalgamates ideas from an ancient Indian treatise to contemporary global town plans and Imperial Mughal architecture to finally produce a monumental urban form, unparalleled in its scale and magnificence for its times. While the grid iron pattern of planning has been used historically in city planning, its application at such a monumental scale for a planned trade city, along with its particular urban form, makes it an important example in the history of urban planning of the Indian subcontinent. The continuity of the architecture and urban form is enhanced by the functions of trade and craftsmanship that reflect the living heritage character of this innovative urban settlement.

Criterion (vi): Historically, the city is said to have housed “chattis karkhanas” (36 industries), the majority of which included crafts like gemstones, lac jewellery, stone idols, miniature paintings, each with a specified street and market some of which continue to exist. During 19th century, the local crafts received further momentum with British period influences in special exhibitions held in United Kingdom, establishment of institutions such as the Rajasthan School of Arts and Albert Hall Museum. While the local traditions of guilds continued, formal institutions for crafts, policies and programmes by Government and the private sector further contributed to national and international recognition of Jaipur crafts in the 20th and 21st centuries. There are 11 surviving crafts, and continuing building crafts of Jaipur contribute much to the conservation works of the city, and the renowned craftsmen from Jaipur continue to conserve and restore historic structures across many cities in India.

The inscribed area of the historic walled city of Jaipur within the walls and gates includes all of the attributes of the property (18th century town plan with its grid iron plan, chaupars, chowkris, city wall and nine city gates; urban form with 11 bazaar facades, shop typology along bazaars, havelis and haveli temples along bazaars and at chaupars, iconic monuments, gates leading to inner streets; craft streets and bazaar areas). The inner areas of chowkris and the related old havelis are not attributes of the property.

The city gates and associated sections of walls, all major monuments and bazars remain in generally good condition despite increasing development pressures. Aspects such as underground Metro lines have been incorporated on the East West axis with due consideration that the architectural icons and urban character of the walled city area remain unchanged, although there has been the loss of mature trees in several chaupars.

The boundaries of the property conform to the original 18th century plans of Sawai Jai Singh II and relate to the surrounding topography as well as the original vision for the planned city. The size and scale of all town planning elements such as width of roads, hierarchy of public spaces, open spaces, waterbodies, built form all are intact as per the original plan. The iconic built heritage structures retain their original form, character and architectural style. Though some areas of bazars and inside havelis in chowkris are undergoing major changes, but most are still intact form and location.

Issues include unauthorised new constructions and additions, some affecting parts of the city wall, new construction affecting the upper facades of some bazaars, communication towers, and the development of open spaces for carparks.

The detailed heritage inventory for all attributes should be completed for the property.

The buffer zone includes the natural terrain and surrounding peaks that governed the set out and alignment of the town plan. The surrounding peaks and skyline outside the property are protected from the visual impacts of development by urban controls.

Authenticity

The spatial organization of the historic walled city of Jaipur continues to reflect the 18th century grid-iron plan. The architectural components like the gates and city walls, bazaars, chaupars and chowkris, historic structures, havelis, religious buildings, and water structures reflect the urban ensemble of the walled city of Jaipur as conceived from the 18th to the early 20th centuries. The materials and substance are largely original, primarily lime and stone. The bazaars (market areas) have been recently conserved using traditional materials. In some cases, 20th century structures use cement concrete but recreate the original architectural vocabulary.

The use and function of most royal and public spaces and monuments are now adapted as contemporary public monuments. Shops, temples and private houses largely retain their original use.

Protection and management requirements

The Municipalities Act of 2009 (amendment) and Jaipur Building Byelaws 1970 guide the architectural control on the urban character of Jaipur which has helped in retaining the original architectural form of the bazaars. As per the Jaipur Master Plan 2025, the walled city area is a specially designated heritage zone and any work related to heritage conservation is guided by detailed heritage management plans and project reports implemented through mandated government agencies. The development and implementation of a Special Area Heritage Plan will include conservation measures and enhance the state of conservation.

Architectural control guidelines and other measures are needed to improve legal protection, and otherwise to improve the coordination and effectiveness of protection for all attributes.

The Jaipur Heritage Management Plan (2007) provides the vision for Jaipur Heritage and is legislated through the Jaipur Master Plan 2025 (see Annexure II, i). The property will be managed as per overall guidelines and the framework outlined in the Jaipur Master Plan 2025 under Section 2- Development Plan for U1 Area. The walled city has been recognized as a special area for heritage conservation under the Development Plan and shares the vision outlined in the Jaipur Heritage Management Plan 2007. As the Jaipur Heritage Management Plan has been implemented in various phases and synchronized with other plans, a comprehensive management strategy with an action plan protecting the attributes will serve as an extension to the Jaipur Heritage Management Plan for the management and monitoring of the property.

The extension and enhancement of the management system is needed, to cover all attributes and provide for a coordinated management supporting administrative tools and decision mechanisms. The management system shall include a detailed monitoring program and an overall interpretation and presentation policy and program.

Well i have heard a lot about the local cuisines, and the various eateries, can you please make a list of the local eateries recommended by you which serve the best recipes ?

Hi there, Rajasthan is sure famous for its cuisines and eateries. There is so much wide range and yet each is distinct and delicious. If you are in Rajasthan than it is a personal request to drop any idea of eating fast food or other international cuisines (atleast one time a day). Rajasthan provides you a variety for each of your meal. Like in Breakfast try our famous KACHORIS , SAMOSAS and MIRCHI-VADA. You can also add JALEBIS in your morning breakfast. You can easily get them from any Sweets-shop but famous ones are ” RAWAT MISHTHAN BHANDAR” , “KANJI”, “LMB-LAXMI MISTHAN BHANDAR”,”DOODH MISHTHAN BHANDAR”, “KANHA” etc. For heavy meal you Rajasthan offers its famous traditional meal “DAL BATI CHURMA” it is a combination of around 7-8 items and best you can get it from “VIRASAT RESTAURANT ” situated at ‘Sahkar-Marg, tonk road, jaipur.’ The reason i named it because it provide the cuisine quite authentically and really delicious. Other restaurant can be Chokhi Dhani, Apno Rajasthan, both of these are cultural restaurants providing rajasthani culture exposure, camel-elephant rides and much to know about rajasthani culture. LMB (laxmi mishthan bhandar) is also a good restaurant. other cuisines include Ker-Sangr, Jodhpuri Gatta, Tarfani, Raab di, Panchkoota, Chaavadi, Ghoogri, Guvar fali ki saag, Kadhi, Makki ki raab and many more. While typical Rajasthani non-vegetarian dishes include – Mohan maans (meat cooked in milk), Laal maans (meat cooked in red chillies curry), Safed maans, Saanth ro achaar (wild boar meat pickled), Khad Khargosh (wild hare cooked and roasted underground). The popular sweet dishes are the – Churma, Halwa, Ghevar, Palang Torh, Besan Chakki, Makkhan bada. Not to miss are their cool, refreshing lemon water with mint known as Jal Jeera, Thandai (cool almond milk), Camel milk tea, Chhaach (butter milk) . Best non veg restaurant would be handi, clef etc.

Addressing the inauguration and foundation stone laying ceremony of 17 road projects with an investment of more than Rs 2,500 crore in Udaipur to accelerate Mewar's development, Gadkari said, "I believe that from Bandikui to Jaipur for Rs 1,370 crore, we are constructing a 67-kilometer four-lane expressway."

"This work will be completed by November 2024 and after that, I assure you that the journey from Delhi to Jaipur will be within two hours," he added.

Gadkari said the Delhi-Mumbai express highway is the first in Asia and the second in the world on which we have built an animal overpass so that animals do not have to cross the road.

"I am very happy that we are making the roads of Rajasthan at par with the roads of the world," he said.

The minister assured that before the end of 2024 the national highways of Rajasthan will be at par with the national highways of America.

He said that in Rajasthan, the Centre is building express highways costing Rs 60,000 crores apart from the 1,382 km Delhi Mumbai Express Highway being built for Rs 1 lakh crore, of which work of Rs 22,000 crore has been done in the state.

On this occasion, Rajasthan Chief Minister Bhajanlal Sharma said that Udaipur is very important from a tourism point of view and it is called Kashmir of Rajasthan.

The work done in Rajasthan after 2014 under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi is historic and will further expand the tourism sector here, he added.

Sharma said the state government is about to complete its 60 days and the government is working to complete its resolution letter as soon as possible.

He said the state government has announced Maharana Pratap Corridor in the state budget and the double-engine government will work at a high pace to complete the project.

The chief minister said the state government will live up to the trust of the people.

The Centre and the Rajasthan government will fulfill the dreams of the people, he added.
