Her major debut single, "Usseewa", released in 2020, became a social phenomenon, and her first album, "Kyougen", released in 2022, also became a long-running hit. In 2022, Ado lent her voice to the world-renowned anime film “ONE PIECE FILM RED”, singing a total of seven songs, including the theme song “New Genesis”. “New Genesis” peaked at #1 on the Billboard Japan Hot 100 chart, holding that spot for six consecutive weeks. This hit song also became the first-ever Japanese song to reach the #1 position on Apple Music’s Top 100: Global Chart. Amidst the massive success of her song “Show”, released in September 2023, Ado's new song, "Kura Kura", an opening theme song for the popular anime series “SPY X FAMILY”, has also become a viral sensation. The song was written by meiyo, a Japanese pop wizard behind numerous hits, and is arranged by Yoko Kanno, known for composing music for the anime series “Cowboy Bebop,” “Ghost in the Shell”, and “Genesis of Aquarion”. Culture and customs.

Japan is a multifaceted country made up of many different cultures, rituals, and traditions influenced by Confucianism (introduced in AD285), Buddhism (introduced in AD552), and Shintoism (Japan’s ritualistic native religion). The rise of technology and international trendsetting has also played a part in the culture of Japan today as the younger generation embraces fashion-forwardness, online personas, and high-tech gadgets.

This is in direct contrast to the Confucian-influenced, old-school Japanese culture that the older generations still live by, with a larger emphasis on modesty, respect, and discipline. This can sometimes cause conflict between the two demographics, however, there are still some traditions that are considered sacred regardless of age – tea ceremonies, bowing, kendo, geisha, and sumo.

History and government

Japan has had an interesting past with its ancient history, pre-modern history, and 20th-century history, all influencing the country we all know and love today.

Ancient history

While there is evidence the archipelago has been occupied by humans for around 35,000 years, what we know now as ‘Japan’ began to take shape about 1700 years ago as disparate tribes started to unify.

Pre-modern history

Over the centuries, Japan has alternated between feudal, empirical, religious, and government rule, with each period birthing different styles of art, architecture, and spirituality. Buddhism and Confucianism, introduced in 552 BC and AD 285, respectively, both proved massively influential on the class structures and governance of pre-modern Japan. You can still visit and stay in many Buddhist temples in Japan today.

20th century

It’s difficult to discuss the emergence of modern Japan without talking about WWII. During the war, the Empire of Japan used aggressive military tactics in an attempt to expand its reach and control in Asia and elsewhere. In response, the US Army instigated a strategic bombing campaign that included the notorious use of nuclear weapons in Hiroshima and Nagasaki. The result of these attacks was mass human and structural devastation.

These bombings, along with depleted armed forces and the looming threat of invasion from the Soviet Union, led the Empire of Japan to surrender unconditionally to the Allies in September 1945.

The ‘Empire of Japan’ became ‘Japan’ as part of the extensive terms of surrender, and the nation faced the prospect of rebuilding and reinventing itself in the second half of the 20th century.

Reflect on the historic and sobering sites of Hiroshima and Nagasaki while on an 24 day Ultimate Japan tour.

After WWII, Japan found its feet operating as a free-market economy based around the manufacture and export of automobiles and electronics, experiencing particularly rapid growth between 1960 and the late 1980s. The late 20th century saw the country emerge as an economic superpower, and with that came the flourishing of several cultural sectors, such as the arts and cuisine.

Experience Japan's historic sites on a 13 day Land of the Rising Sun tour.

Top places to visit in Japan

One minute you’re walking through a former black-market quarter, the next, you’re paying your respects at a 1400-year-old temple. Eclectic Tokyo is an essential part of any visit to Japan. Wander through the streets of Tokyo on our 12 day Classic Japan tour.

If you’ve ever eaten at a sushi train restaurant, you’ve got the underrated city of Osaka to thank! The motto in this city is 'kuidaore', which roughly translates as ‘eat until you drop’ . You can consider that a (friendly) order. Experience Osaka on our 12 day Japan Family Holiday.

The home of temples, palaces, and the Gion district (where geisha live and work), Kyoto is also where you’ll find the famed Fushimi Inari Taisha Shrine. Spot Geisha in Kyoto on our 9 day Japan Express tour.

4. Kanazawa

A great place to see a slice of old Japan, with classic sculpted gardens, a restored Old Town, and well-preserved architecture from a variety of eras. Explore Kanazawa on our 11 day Cycle Japan tour or on our 10 day Essential Japan adventure.

5. Hiroshima

Most travelers visit Hiroshima to see the Peace Memorial Park, constructed around the hypocentre of the atomic bomb that destroyed the city in 1945. Follow this up with nearby Miyajima, a tranquil island where tame deer roam the streets.

6. Yudanaka

This quaint resort town is best experienced in the winter, when snow coats the normally evergreen trees and Japanese macaques come down from the mountains to bathe and groom each other in the steaming natural hot springs of Jigokudani (Hell Valley).

Geography and environment

Japan is an archipelago of more than 6000 islands located in the Pacific Ocean in Asia . The main islands are Hokkaido, Honshu, Kyushu and Shikoku. Lying on the Pacific Ring of Fire, Japan is prone to destructive earthquakes, tsunamis, and volcanic activity. The most famous volcano, Mount Fuji , is also Japan's highest peak and only 100km from Tokyo.

Japan has plenty of forested, mountainous terrain that is unsuitable for agriculture and development, so much of the population lives in the coastal cities. This has led Japan to become one of the most densely populated countries in the world and the majority of its inhabitants are used to living in very small spaces, with a heavy reliance on public transport.

Although life is fast-paced and crowded in cities like Tokyo and Osaka, rural areas typically feature low-density, traditional housing and a slower pace of life surrounded by greenery such as lush forests and plenty of moss-covered boulders.

Traverse mountains, cycle coastlines, and meander through forests on a 12 day Japan: Hike, Bike and Kayak tour.

Shopping in Japan is fun but expensive, so be sure to have a budget for souvenirs planned in advance! In cities like Tokyo, there are loads of quirky stores and funky galleries showcasing the works of independent fashion designers and gadget creators. From the outlandish to the kitsch, you're guaranteed to find loads of colorful clothing and edgy art that you won't be able to find elsewhere.

If you’re planning to bring back leaf tea or any other perishable or edible items, it's a good idea to check with your local customs officials to ensure that you are able to bring certain items back into your home country. Australia and New Zealand, in particular, have strict quarantine laws.

What to buy

  • Kimonos This quintessential Japanese souvenir looks great hung on the wall as an interesting decorative piece. If you plan on wearing one, make sure you do so respectfully and learn the correct way to fold the garment.
  • Paper lanterns, kites and fans Japanese paper goods make great, relatively inexpensive souvenirs. Choose from high-quality, traditionally-made kites or delicate rice paper lanterns.
  • Electronics Shops in Japan are bursting with the latest tech gadgets. Just be sure to check that they are compatible for use at home.
  • Fashion Have fun with the amazing diversity of popular street culture fashion available in Japan. Vibrant, brash and sometimes bizarre – find something that no one back at home will be wearing.
  • Anime and manga paraphernalia Another inexpensive gift option, even for people who can’t read Japanese. Pick up a book, magazine, t-shirt or print from one of Japan’s many anime and manga stores.

Festivals and events

If you want an adventure with a point of difference, consider planning your travels to coincide with these popular festive events in Japan.

Sapporo Winter Festival

Held every February since 1950, this festival features hundreds of statues and ice sculptures, snow slides and mazes, regional food and artistic performances. Winter in Japan is truly amazing, and the Sapporo Winter Festival is a magical way to celebrate.

Hadaka Matsuri

Head to Okayama to watch thousands of men wearing nothing but loincloths vie to touch the chosen 'naked man'. It may look like a bizarre male-bonding exercise but it's actually a historic cleansing ritual dating back thousands of years. Dates change yearly.

Fuji Rock Festival

Held annually in the stunning surroundings of the Naeba Ski Resort, this outdoor music festival is huge and draws in big-name acts and local bands Thousands of music lovers flock to Naeba for three days of camping, music and partying in the summer months.

Japan travel FAQs

Do i need a covid-19 vaccine to join an intrepid trip.

Trips from 1 January 2023 onwards

From 1 January 2023, Intrepid will no longer require travelers to provide proof of vaccination against COVID-19 (excluding all Polar trips and select adventure cruises).

However, we continue to strongly recommend that all Intrepid travelers and leaders get vaccinated to protect themselves and others.

Specific proof of testing or vaccination may still be required by your destination or airline. Please ensure you check travel and entry requirements carefully.

Do I need to purchase travel insurance before traveling?

Absolutely. All passengers traveling with Intrepid are required to purchase travel insurance before the start of their trip. Your travel insurance details will be recorded by your leader on the first day of the trip. Due to the varying nature, availability and cost of health care around the world, travel insurance is very much an essential and necessary part of every journey.

For more information on insurance, please go to: Travel Insurance

Do I need a visa to travel to Japan?

Under current restrictions, a visa is required to enter Japan as a tourist. We recommend you apply for your visa no later than one month before your departure date. Please contact your local consulate or embassy for more information.

Is tipping customary in Japan?

Tipping isn't customary in Japan and is not expected – in fact, it will sometimes be considered impolite. Some inns or ryokans may leave a small envelope in your room where a small gratuity can be left for housekeeping staff.

What is the internet access like in Japan?

Internet access is excellent in Japan, with one of the most developed high-speed internet networks in the world. Internet cafes and wi-fi hotspots are easily found in most cities and major towns.

Can I use my cell while in Japan?

Cell phone coverage is excellent in Japan but be aware that talking loudly on your phone in public places (like in train carriages) is frowned upon. You will be expected to hide your mouth behind your hand if you must take a call in public. If you want to use your cell phone, ensure global roaming is activated before you arrive (but be aware of the fees this may incur).

What are the toilets like in Japan?

In Japan, toilets range from high-tech bidets to standard western-style flushable toilets to squat toilets, which are still common outside the city. Sometimes you may need to pay for toilet paper, which can usually be purchased from a vending machine nearby.

What will it cost for a...?

Japan's unit of currency is the yen:

  • Bento box = YEN 550
  • Bowl of ramen = YEN 650-1,200
  • Can of beer = YEN 250
  • Coffee = YEN 100-600
  • Convenience store snack = YEN 200-500

Can I drink the water in Japan?

Drinking water from taps in Japan is considered safe. For environmental reasons, try to use a refillable water bottle rather than buying bottled water. Major cities often have water fountains in train stations.

Are credit cards widely accepted in Japan?

Major credit cards are accepted by some stores; however, Japan is still very much a cash culture and as such, some places may not accept credit cards. Ensure you carry enough cash to cover purchases.

What is ATM access like in Japan?

ATMs are common in Japan but unfortunately many of them don't accept foreign-issued cards. However, you can access cash from non-Japanese bank accounts via the Cirrus and Maestro systems at all post office ATMs around the country, as well as ATMs at 7-Eleven convenience stores.

When is the best time to travel to Japan?

There’s never a bad time to travel to Japan but the months that see the most travelers are March, April, and May as the weather is mild and the cherry blossoms are in full bloom. The warm weather (with low humidity levels) of September, October, and November are also suitable months to visit Japan – you’ll even be treated to landscapes colored with oranges, reds, and browns for autumn. While winter can be cold, this is the best time for snow activities such as skiing, snowboarding, and snow festivals. On the other hand, the summer months see high humidity levels that can leave some travelers uncomfortable.

What is the weather like in Japan?

  • Spring (March to May): temperatures range from 10 to 20°C (50–70°F), with conditions getting sunnier and clearer towards the end of the season.
  • Summer (June to August): temperatures range from 21 to 32°C (70–90°F) depending on where you are. It’s warmer in the south than in the north. You can expect some rain in June, and it can get quite humid towards the end of the season.
  • Autumn (September to November): temperatures range from 7 to 20°C (45–65°F). The humidity starts to calm down in September, but days stay warm until October. Nights can be chilly.
  • Winter (December to February): break out the coats, temperatures during winter range from 0 to 15°C (30–60°F). The mountains and the north experience snowfall .

How safe is Japan?

Japan is generally safe and is rated among the safest countries in the world. Reports of crime such as theft are very low and travellers are often stunned by the fact that locals leave belongings unaccompanied in cafes and bars (though we certainly don’t recommend it!).

Is Japan safe for LGBTQIA+ travelers?

Travelers who identify as part of the LGBTQIA+ community shouldn’t have any issues visiting Japan with violence, outright hostility or overt discrimination extremely rare. However, Japan’s older generation still holds conservative values when it comes to queer sexuality and non-binary gender expression, especially those that live in regional areas.

Same-sex relationships are considered legal in some districts (such as Tokyo); however, same-sex marriage hasn’t been legalized yet. Public displays of affection are often frowned upon, regardless of sex, gender, or sexual orientation so keep that in mind when you’re out in public.

For more detailed and up-to-date advice, we recommend visiting  Equaldex  or  ILGA  before you travel.

Is Japan accessible for travelers with disabilities?

Intrepid is committed to making travel widely accessible, regardless of ability or disability. That’s why we do our best to help as many people see the world as possible, regardless of any physical or mental limitations they might have. We’re always happy to talk to travelers with disabilities and see if we can help guide them towards the most suitable itinerary for their needs and, where possible, make reasonable adjustments to our itineraries.

The needs of travelers with mobility issues, including wheelchair users, are considered in the infrastructure in major cities. Train stations have lifts (elevators), wide turnstiles and (for the most part) raised platforms so that wheelchair users can glide onto the train without being assisted.  Sidewalks in Japanese cities are sometimes sloped towards the road, which can make traveling a straight line difficult for wheelchair users or people with vision impairment.

It is common practice in Japan to remove shoes when entering a home. Wheelchair users should carry something to wipe down their wheels in respect of this custom. Apply the same logic for other mobility aids such as canes.

Ryokans and other traditional accommodation can be difficult to navigate for people with limited mobility, but accessible hotel options are plentiful in the major cities.

Travelers with vision impairment may find the tactile yellow strips that guide the way to various places in train stations helpful, though please note that there is no barrier between the train tracks and platforms.

If you have a battery-operated hearing aid, it’s a good idea to bring extra batteries or familiarise yourself with the Japanese equivalent of the batteries it takes.

If you do live with a visual, hearing or other impairment, let your booking agent or group leader know early on so they’re aware and suitable arrangements can be made. As a general rule, knowing some common words in the local language, carrying a written itinerary with you and taking to the streets in a group, rather than solo, can help make your travel experience the best it can be.

What should I wear in Japan?

Summer months can be incredibly hot and sticky, so loose, lightweight and breathable clothing is essential.

Spring and autumn can be crisp and cold, so you might want to pack thermal layers in addition to your coat and boots.

Outside of Hokkaido and the mountains, the winter temperatures in Japan are manageable as long as you have regular cold-weather clothes like a good coat, pair of gloves, a winter hat and a scarf.

The style of dress common for women in Japan may be a little more covered up than you are used to, particularly outside the major cities.

Packing comfortable trousers is essential as you may find yourself sitting cross-legged on the floor during your stay.

What are some common phrases/words I should learn before my trip to Japan?

Having a basic understanding of the language and culture of the country you're visiting can go a long way when it comes to, not only communicating efficiently but your overall trip experience as well. Some common phrases you need to learn are:

  • 'hello' - Konnichiwa
  • 'good morning' - Ohayō
  • 'thank you' - Arigatou Gozaimasu
  • 'please' - Onegaishimasu

What religions do they practice in Japan?

See the towering peak of Mount Fuji, the tallest mountain in Japan and a UNESCO-listed site. We’ll take you up to the 5th station of Mount Fuji, a spectacular vantage point at 7,545 feet, before taking a ride on the Kachikachiyama Ropeway with views of Mount Fuji and Lake Kawaguchi.

Take a high-speed bullet train to Kyoto

Board the high-speed bullet train to Kyoto, the former capital of Japan and the ancient epicentre of Japanese culture. After whizzing through the country, you’ll meet the locals at a traditional ryokan and learn about traditional Japanese customs, then explore the Gion District and glittering Kinkakuji Temple, the symbol of Kyoto.

Experience a traditional Japanese Tea Ceremony

We’ll introduce you to a professional Tea Master who has spent many years learning the craft of the tea ceremony. You’ll learn about the history of Japanese tea making, and watch how the matcha is prepared with a bamboo whisk. You’ll even have a go at making (and tasting) your own tea.

Admire Osaka from the Floating Garden Observatory

The Floating Garden Observatory is an open-air viewing platform, stretching between the two towers of the Umeda Sky Building. We’ll take you to the top of the 567-foot buildings for panoramic views over Osaka, including the city’s dazzling rivers, bridges and soaring skyscrapers.

Wander through Ameyoko Street Market

With nearly 200 shops selling everything from fresh fish and spices to clothing and bags, you can spend hours roaming through Ameyoko Street Market. Located in Tokyo along the Yamanote Line tracks, it was once a black market selling American goods and sweets after WWII, when sugar was hard to find.

Our top 5 things to do in Japan

Our Japan tours take you from the dizzying heights of Mount Fuji and the bustle of the Ameyoko Market, to the tranquility of a Japanese tea ceremony.

Tokyo National Museum

The largest and oldest museum in Japan, Tokyo National Museum holds one of the world’s best collections of art and archaeological artefacts from Asia. There are over 110,000 items, including 87 National Treasures of Japan, and you can find everything from art along the Silk Road to medieval Japanese art.

Kotokuin Temple

Located in the city of Kamakuru, the Kotokuin Temple is a Japanese Buddhist temple of the Jodo sect. It’s home to the ‘Great Buddha’ or ‘Daibutsu’, a 37-foot bronze statue of Amida Buddha, constructed in 1252. The towering statue is a National Treasure and one of the most iconic sights in Japan.

Sensoji Buddhist Temple

One of the most famous temples in Japan, the Sensoji Buddhist Temple is the oldest Buddhist temple in Tokyo. It was originally built in 628 but was rebuilt after being destroyed in WWII. Today, you’ll find a beautiful five-storey pagoda, woven with incense and crimson eaves.

Best museums in Japan

A Japan tour package with Trafalgar takes you through the country’s top museums, from one of the world’s best collections of Asian art, to the ornate temples of Tokyo.

Although sushi is now a popular dish around the world, you’ve never really tried it until you’ve eaten the best in Japan. Our Local Specialists will help you navigate the endless varieties of this iconic dish, from raw vegetables to fresh fish wrapped in rice and seaweed.

Hida beef comes from a Japanese breed of black-haired cattle raised in the fresh air and pure water of Gifu Prefecture. Hailed as the best beef in Japan, we’ll take you to the top restaurants to try one of the beautifully tender and marbled Hida beef steaks.

A beloved dish found all over the country, ramen is a delicious Japanese noodle soup. Each region has a different variation and it usually involves a tasty pork or chicken broth, seasoned with plenty of rich flavors like miso, soy sauce and spring onions.

Best food in Japan

A Japan group tour with Trafalgar will have you indulging in the country’s fantastic cuisine, from fresh sushi to piping hot ramen.

What to pack for Japan

People packing for a tour

Adaptor plug

In Japan, the standard voltage is 100 V and the power plugs and sockets are of type A and B. The standard frequency is 50 / 60 Hz.

Comfortable sandals

Japanese culture requires you to take off your shoes when entering traditional restaurants, temples and ryokans. Bring a comfortable pair of sandals so you can easily slip them off all day.

Japanese phrasebook

Learning a few Japanese phrases will help you connect with the friendly Japanese locals, and offers the chance for some rewarding interactions.

Most shops and restaurants in Japan primarily accept cash, so it’s best to come prepared with some Japanese yen for your trip.

Versatile clothing

Japan’s weather ranges hot and humid to freezing cold, with mild springs in between. Pack versatile layers to be prepared for all conditions on your Japan holiday.

DEF LEPPARD Set To Bring THE WORLD TOUR To JAPAN In November/December

Def Leppard and Motley Crue will soon announce Japanese dates on The World Tour 2023 to take place in November/December.

The World Tour 2023 began in Mexico City on 18th February.

The World Tour 2023 was first announced in October 2022 with initial dates scheduled in Mexico, South America, Europe and the UK before then adding shows in the USA.

Motley Crue have now hinted that the Japanese tour dates will be announced very soon - possibly in the next few days.

Update - Def Leppard have now themselves teased the announcement following MC posting last night.

The last few times Japanese shows have been announced was at around 8am local time - Monday being the first likely day for an announcement in the coming week.

This happened in June 2018 when the three shows in Tokyo, Osaka and Nagoya were announced for October 2018 on the Hysteria & More tour.

This news follows already mentioned hints by Phil Collen at SXSW last week when he was asked about future plans and also teasing the now announced 'Drastic Symphonies' album.

Read Phil's quotes again below about the tour.

Sav also mentioned the tour would hit Japan and Australia/New Zealand in an Instagram post earlier this year.

And Phil mentioned these countries many times since he and Joe first confirmed that the tour would last three years before the 2022 tour began.

Visit the Tour News section. For more news on future tour plans.

Visit the Album News section for more news on new music (based on band member quotes).

Teaser Poster Quote

"Japan performance will be held this fall."

A rough translation of the message on the poster.

Biggest Japanese Shows

This tour could see Def Leppard play their biggest ever shows in Japan.

The largest venues played before now include Tokyo's Budokan (14,471), Yoyogi Olympic Pool (13,291) and Osaka's Castle Hall (16,000).

Possible Tokyo venues include the Tokyo Dome (55,000) and Saitama Super Arena (36,500).

Phil Collen/SXSW - 14th March 2023 Interview Quotes - (Transcribed by dltourhistory)

Upcoming Announcement

In September 2022 Vince Neil told the Las Vegas press that 2024 will see the bands doing another stadium run in the USA.

2025 Residency

Last week Joe Elliott old BBC Radio 2 that the band were planning another residency that will likely not happen until 2025 and may feature a 'Drastic Symphonies' performance with a full orchestra.

And also speculated the band could bring this to the UK and possibly play a couple of shows at the Royal Albert Hall.

10 Days Splendid Japan with Nagoya (3 star hotels)

The tour was good and we were fortunate to have a terrific tour guide named Henry. There is only one negative I would share with any future travelers. DO NOT accept the Travel Insurance that is offered by TourRadar. The Insurance site is complicated with lots of "mice type" and no way to contact them via voice or direct chat. It is just a "Online Trave; Insurance Agency". We had a problem with a flight that was cancelled by the carrier, and no easy way to file a claim. I think that TourRadar needs to dump that insurance partner, but possibly they are getting hugh "kick back" or commission they may decided to keep. Integrity and Honesty goes a long way beyond just booking a tour, and when we contacted TourRadar for assistace all they would do is give us the Insurance Website Link. To be honest, I think TourRadar needs to give more assistance when problems such of our occurs.

Such a great tour and a great experience! Our tour guide Isamu was knowledgeable and helped make sure everyone had a good experience. Anime, pop culture, food and historical places all over Japan. This was a trip of a lifetime! The itinerary that Stunning Tours help us selected was excellent and exceeded our expectations for our family, which included a 12 year old. There was a wide array of sightseeing and activities covering every interest of our family, including anime sites and shopping, popular cultural sites, and entertainment activities (Universal Studios Japan, ninja demonstration, rickshaw tour, and geisha show).

Epic Japan: Speed Trains & Street Food Tour

Epic Japan: Speed Trains & Street Food

Tour was great in many respects - some of the accommodation, for example, was excellent, and the use of the bullet trains was a fab experience. As others have said, there was perhaps too much free time - at times, I felt unprepared. Having said this, our great guide, Akiko, would often help us work out what to do/where to visit.

Epic 13-Day Japan Budget Tour: Odyssey Across the Land of the Rising Sun Tour

Epic 13-Day Japan Budget Tour: Odyssey Across the Land of the Rising Sun

I did a lot of group tours in the past, more than 50 single trips and this is my second tour with this operator. It’s a budget tour and that’s what you get. Start with the Hostels. pro: - surprisingly most of the backpacker’s hostels were really clean and modern. I always had a good sleep. The showers and toilets were cleaned regularly and the water pressure was perfect. Towels (except of one time) were provided also shampoo, body wash, conditioner and hairdryer etc. contra: - most of the time we had to sleep in 6-10 bed dorms. And of course it depends on the ppl if they are noisy or smelly. Bear this in mind. Sightseeing pro: - we saw a lot of shrines, castles, temples, pubs, restaurants and of course the museum in Hiroshima etc. We could get a slight overview of Japan and all the tourist attractions. contra: - we saw a lot of shrines, castles, pubs and restaurants! Sadly, because Japan is a crazy country and has a lot more to offer. At some point I was bored to visit the next shrine. So I ended up spending a day on my own to enjoy the Japanese lifestyle. Suggestions: Akashi - a cafe in Japan is famous for having one of the most bizarre toilets - it is surrounded by a giant aquarium. Or the Shibuya Sky's escalator. It is the most famous escalator in Tokyo. Transportation pro: - experience the Japanese subway and underground station and the tons of ppl. Don’t be scared. It’s not that bad. Don’t miss! contra: - you walk a lot. If it’s from the train station to the hostel or to other places. Sometimes there were no escalators so you get a great workout by stair climbing. Due to some kind of mismanagement we had two wait two times 2 hours at a train station for our train. It’s just wasted time. If you know there is time to kill you should find an alternative. 7-Eleven is none! Tourguide pro: - our guide was friendly, funny and nice! He already made sure that we got all the information for the next day in the evening before so everyone was well informed. There was not only one moment some one was missing or didn’t know what was going on. He was very thoughtful and managed to handout seat reservations to ppl he knew they are close, so everyone felt comfortable. He waited for everyone who stayed behind, and he showed a lot of patience for everyone, even if it meant waiting until everyone took their 100th photo. He always recommended restaurants, bars or shopping areas. It was easy to find. I can tell that he put a lot of effort into the daily heads-up! contra: - lack of knockledge. I missed information about Japanese lifestyle, behavior, do‘s and don’ts. Most of the time I googled it by myself. - Unfortunately, he was unable to stop some very rude behavior from grp members. If one grp member burb‘s loudly in front of a host, he shouldn’t let this slide. I felt so sorry for this nice host ladies and I felt embarrassed myself! - His acceptance of a random f*ckboy a grp member brought into the grp after a nights out was also inexcusable. This guy showed up regularly at almost every occasion (karaoke/last team event). A few grp members including myself felt very uncomfortable. Mentioned to the guide that he should be the one to stop this (because it’s a group event) was just ignored. To not ruin the mood the grp members agreed to let it slide.

Japan Express Tour

Japan Express

It was a really great experience! Having both guided tours and lots of free time made for a nicely balanced tour where our guide, Toshimi, a very knowledgeable local, would show us parts of Japan and tell us of their significance historically and socially, and also tell us how and where to appreciate Japan during our free time. Our guide loves Japan's history and it was very interesting talking to him about Japan. He also made lots of great recommendations on places to see and eat at, and overall made the whole tour experience very convenient, fun, and informative.

All Inclusive Japan Classics- 9 days Tour

All Inclusive Japan Classics- 9 days

We had heard and read many good things about Supera's tour package. Thankfully, the reviews were true! The accommodations were top-notch and spacious. Meals were of high quality and portions were more than adequate. The tours were a good mix of the main attractions of each region, and while some places were inevitably touristy, we never felt pressured to buy anything. The walking tours of Kyoto were definitely highlights. Thanks also to our indomitable, energetic and always-optimistic guide Hiroko!

Lloyd was helpful in helping me get around Tokyo, finding places to eat, and things to do. He would start the day by making breakfast, informing us of the days itinerary, and giving us ideas for things to do after our planned activities were over (clubs, bars, etc.). A good guide and a great experience.

Iconic Japan National Geographic Journeys Tour

Iconic Japan National Geographic Journeys

This tour is a fabulous introduction to Japan. It is fast paced with lots of walking and use of Japan’s massive transportation system- from the bullet train to the subway with someone to guide you through the complexities. Our guide, Mika, was exceptional making sure each individual’s needs were met and sharing her vast knowledge of the country and culture. The itinerary was varied from big city to country side and we found the Japanese people to always be polite and helpful. The group is limited to 15 or less so you get to know everyone. We were fortunate to have a great group.

Reviews of Japan Tours

Amazing tour. Kayoko was awesome and we got to see so much of Japan. Only wish there was a change on the 10 person minimum for the optional tours. We had a smaller group so getting 10 people for things sometimes was tough.
Amazing tour with amazing people! Good at showing you the amazing aspects and culture of Japan in 10 days with good activities! Tour guides were amazing lovely people as well!
The Japan tour was amazing! I really enjoyed my experience, Rachel and Zoe were brilliant group leaders and made it such a special trip! I would definitely recommend the tour. Thank you very much, I had a great time!

Why the trips are not by train with the Japan Rail Pass?

As we look to be at the right moment in the perfect place, moving by car it’s the cheapest and most comfortable way. Also, as our trips are based on groups of 4 persons with a guide, we move with small vans around Japan. This way we can adapt the schedules to our own interests. If we decided to use the JR Pass and travel by Shinkansen bullet train, we not will have the same freedom.

Can you take pictures in Japan?

For sure, you can take photos in all public places in Japan. You just need to ask for permissions if you have commercial purposes as in most countries of the world. And like other places, you can find the international signs that could tell you to not take photos. If you are not sure, kindly ask a local. Take a look at our gallery of Photos in Japan!

Can you travel now?

Yes, with the actual situation enter to Japan is possible for almost all countries. You can keep your seat now as bookings are going fast!

You will need to travel with an official travel agency and get the ERFS certificate. We have our own local agency in Japan, so with us, travel to Nippon is easy!

Which currency is used?

In Japan, the currency is the Japanese Yen.

Don’t think that you can pay everywhere with a credit card in Japan. Although you can’t pay in euros , you can convert once there to the Japanese Yen at the same airport. We suggest changing around 300-500 euros or dollars and use your travel credit card  there.

tokyo tower sunset

How much money will you need for your trip?

You should plan to spend around ¥3,000 ($28) per day on our photo tours in Japan , which is the average daily price based on meals that are not included.

Why is food so cheap ?

It´s because the purchasing power and standard of living of the Japanese are very high. You can buy a decent meal with a low budget . As a basic necessity, Japanese cuisine is relatively inexpensive compared to the level of life in Japan.

shijuku street photography

Do I need a Visa to enter?

To  enter Japan you need a passport and a visa unless you are from a country that is visa-exempt . In case you need it, the Japanese government is going to introduce the e-visa. In case is not currently implemented, you will need to visit the Japanese embassy or consulate to apply for a  visa .

What month is the cheapest fly?

According to different flight searches, the cheapest months to take a flight to Japan is from January to April. Although in March is cherry blossoms, you can find economic flights. The high season is summer, so even in November-December, you can find good deals.

Why is tipping rude in the country?

The Japanese culture is based on the belief that the price includes already good service . This way, pay extra can be considered insulting. Respect the cultural rules, even if it looks strange for you. Simply be polite , and say thanks to the waiter or waitress after enjoying the service.

The spring tour through Japan was absolutely full of wonderful photographic opportunities and great camaraderie. With only four participants we all got to know each other well and got to see the most beautiful sites. Eduardo was easy-going with good humour (and excellent music taste) and tremendous photographic experience. The accommodations were excellent and this has to be the best value Japan Cherry Blossoms tour on the market.

This Japan tour was not only well organized, but also a lot of fun. We had a great group of photographers with a lot of camaraderie and humor visiting great sites, we would never have found without Eduardo’s fine insight. Highly recommended!

PhotoWorldTour’s JapanSakura tour was both a highlight and a sustained happy pill. In the course of a few days, we traveled in Spanish through large parts of Japan’s most beautiful areas. Eduardo – as well as his lucky mascot Missifou – is the best tour guide I’ve had. Relaxed, funny and so democratically oriented that we called him “our glorious leader” without being the least bit ironic. We stayed in good hotels and got up before sunrise to get the best possible photos. Then a small pause before the next image sequence..etc. Collectively, we covered larger parts of central Japan in a way that we certainly wouldn’t have been able to do without his knowledge. This was fun, simply 🌹

Why Book With Us

  • Stay in traditional family run ryokan inns to experience the real Japan
  • First to offer walking tours in Japan

You may not have considered it, but Japan is a superb walking destination. Fly over Japan and you will see that the entire archipelago is mountainous except for a narrow strip of coastal shelf, a few broad inland basins and some river valleys. Those flatter lands are where the bulk of the population lives. The mountains – the main terrain of this tour - are surprisingly unpopulated. From a distance it may seem that the old Samurai-and-Geisha traditions have given way to the mechanical marvels of consumer culture, but come closer and you will find a society shaped by deeply ingrained values, with many living traditions.

This walking tour of Japan wanders around the cultural barrier and into territory that Japanese hold sacred. Accompanied by expert leaders, you will hike through places of natural beauty and hinterland sites of deep significance. The itinerary is interspersed with interesting urban explorations. It begins with a brief immersion into the maze of Tokyo, before heading into the countryside to gaze at the nation’s symbol, Mount Fuji from a suitable ringside seat: the top of one of its surrounding hills. Travelling by train and bus we head to the Kiso Valley and hike along an historic trail, the legendary trade route which connected the Sea of Japan with the Pacific Ocean.

Japan’s original Buddhist monks proved their faith on this trail in the 7th century, when the mainland religion found its place among the esoteric native Shinto. Between these hinterland adventures are a few special days in Kyoto the “Florence of Japan” due to its endless fine art treasures, unique sense of identity, and walk-friendly environment.

Keeping to the backroads theme we have discrete opportunities to experience temple gardens, peerless Buddhist arts and architecture and the bohemian street culture of the ancient capital. Our Japanese walking based journey ends in another throbbing metropolis - Osaka, a mercantile Mecca. At every step of the way craft and cuisine will round out your Japanese experience, with encounters with locals adding a memorable human dimension.

Tokyo Accommodation

In the cities we use modern, centrally located 3 star hotels. A typical hotel we frequently use in Tokyo is the Sunroute Asakusa as pictured. This hotel is close to Asakusa, one of Tokyo's most famous tourist spots, a very convenient location for you to visit areas such as Sensoji, Kaminari-mon, Kappabashi street and so on. Also Tokyo Skytree is one station away from Tobu-Asakusa Station and there are also many excellent eating options in the surrounding area. Offering simple but comfortable rooms, with free wi-fi and excellent service, this hotel is an ideal base for your exploration of Tokyo.

Osaka Accommodation

In Osaka we use the Shin Osaka Esaka Tokyu REI Hotel. Just a minute’s walk from Esaka Subway Station exits 4 & 9. This is a modern, centrally located property with comfortable, simply furnished rooms offering western en-suite bathroom, free Wi-Fi, tea & coffee facilities, satellite TV and a restaurant offering a buffet breakfast. Umeda Station is just a 9 minute walk and from nearby Esaka Station, Shin-Osaka Shinkansen Station is a 4min subway ride. Tarumi Shrine is a 20min walk and Osaka Itami Airport is a 15min drive. The area also offers many great eateries within easy walking distance.

world tour in japanese

Traditional Ryokan Accommodation

In the countryside we stay in atmospheric, family-run inns, with comfortable western-style hotels in the major cities. The Japanese “ryokan” is such a delicate environment, with compact spaces and displayed heirlooms, that for the first encounter something of a bull-in-a-china-shop feeling is inevitable - especially in the entrance as shoes are put on and removed. But this reaction normalises as we and the innkeepers get used to each others ways. Traditional-style accommodation means sleeping on “futon” bedding laid out on tatami floors.

Mt.Fuji and Cherry Blossom – The Iconic Image of Tokyo

Tokyo is viewed more as the symbol of modern Japanese culture than a city. Speaking of Tokyo, in addition to popular icons such as Tokyo Tower and Sky Tree, and Holy Land, the most well-known attraction is Mount Fuji. Akko took inspiration from the scenic spring view of Mt.Fuji and cherry blossoms and designed this World Tour-Tokyo keyboard.

world tour in japanese

We made a private tour through South China in January 2024. Altogether Chengdu was the highlight. We had an incredible day at Emeishan. In Chengdu our guidewas Helen. She was the diamond of all. Speaking fluently English, full of interesting stories, laughing and talking all the time. We missed her the rest of our tour. We highly recommend to go to Chengdu for 3 days when visiting China, especially with Helen.

Other highlights are too many to mention but here are a few Ken taking us to the Terracotta Warriors and our food tour in Xian was amazing,

Our day volunteering at the Panda Base was truly unforgettable. Helen, our guide, provided us with invaluable insights about Chengdu and the pandas, enriching our tour with her knowledge and expertise. We're grateful to Helen for accompanying us throughout the day and showcasing the highlights of China.

We had a booking with China Highlights through Silvia Ye who guarenteed a perfect organisation. In Chengdu our guide was Helen. She was the diamond of all. Speaking fluently English, full of interesting stories, laughing and talking all the time. We missed her the rest of our tour. We highly recommend to go to Chengdu for 3 days when visiting China, especially with Helen.

We traveled to China during the Chinese new year and we had Kris as our guide and he is simply knowledgeable, helpful and great.

We visited Guilin for 2 days and stayed in the Guilin Waterfall hotel. Guilin was absolutely beautiful! Our guide, William, was very knowledgeable and kind! He taught us so much about Guilin and the surrounding area! We really enjoyed trying the specialty rice noodles of Guilin. Our highlight was the Li river cruise.

Amazing tour and the guide Mr. 贺霄 was very accommodating with our needs and request as we have bought our 2 years old with us. Well explained for all the place we visited. Any additional cost were informed well ahead and didn't felt any pressure if we opt not to go for additional detour. The trip was relaxing/ laid back/no rushing with zero shopping!

We had an amazing to China. Our tour guide Martin in Shanghai was super knowledgeable, caring and very flexible with our itinerary. When my wife got sick in the Shanghai, he was able to arrange an English-speaking doctor on the spot and took us to the clinic. On top of the that, Martin and the driver stayed with us at the clinic for the whole duration and drove us back to the hotel afterwards. His genuine concern for our welfare and willingness to go the extra mile did not go unnoticed, and we were deeply touched by his kindness and compassion.

Guilin, but mostly Yangshuo was at the tail end of our China adventure so there was a lot to live up to. Having a guide like Gary Wei meant that our trip ended on a high! We arrived in Guilin very late from an 11 hour train journey. Gary met us with gifts of fruit, sweet bread and cakes which was so unexpected and thoughtful.Gary's knowledge of the area was exceptional and his attention to us the same. He really took our children under his wing - even tuning in to annoying sibling rivalry and managing to keep the peace very well! Gary was our personal photographer at times and even our Taiji instructor, making a beautiful video of us all doing Taiji in a scenic setting :)The cruise from Guilin to Yangshuo is definitely worth taking and we enjoyed our few nights in the area, riding bikes along the river, doing a cooking class and enjoying the scenery

Modern Japanese History Tour

Explore recent Japanese military history on this 3-hour guided excursion in Tokyo. Experience the lives of everyday people and soldiers during World War II at Yushukan Shrine , learn about military practices like Kamikaze attacks from an expert guide, and stop by a shrine that commemorates Japan’s 2.5 million victims of war since 1869.

It has been over 70 years since the surrender of Japan, which ended the Second World War. The global war that lasted from 1939 to 1945, was the most widespread war in history, as it involved more than 100 million people from over 30 countries. Many lives were lost during the war, including the 129,000 to 226,000 fatalities that occurred due to the atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki.

Tokyo suffered greatly from the war, especially with the B-29 air raids conducted in March 1945. They were regarded as the single most destructive bombing raid in human history, as most of central Tokyo was annihilated (with 1 million people made homeless and an estimated of 100,000 civilian deaths).

In this three-hour small group Modern History Tour, you’ll be guided by an English-speaking guide as you visit the historic landmarks with relics of WWII. At 9 AM, meet with your tour guide at Kudanshita Station (designated meet-up spot will be provided after booking).

Guests will pay a visit to Yasukuni Shrine, which commemorates 2.5 million of Japan’s war dead since 1869. Learn about the history and controversy that surrounds the shrine before heading to Yushukan, the military and war museum dedicated to the souls of soldiers who died fighting for their country.

In this tour, guests will learn how the Japanese commemorate and pay their respects to those who have perished from war, the issues that civilians faced during WWII such as starvation, how Japanese soldiers felt and behaved during the war, learn why kamikaze (also known as tokotai) was so prevalent and how the soldiers told their family members before their inevitable fates.

Highlights:

  • Spend a few hours exploring Japan’s modern history of war on a guided tour
  • Learn about Japan’s 2.5 million war dead and Kamikaze attacks from an expert
  • Visit landmark sites such as the Showa-kan Museum and Yushukan Shrine
  • Get a different perspective on Japan with this specialized experience

Availability: Tuesdays to Sundays from 9 AM to 12 PM

Location: Kudanshita Station (designated meet-up spot will be provided after booking)

  • 2 or more people: 11,000 JPY per person
  • 1 person only: 22,000 JPY per person
  • 2 or more people: 13,500 JPY per person

The 4-Hour Private Tokyo Tour will include an English-speaking guide. This tour will be conducted after the Modern History Tour, from 12 PM to 4 PM. Public transportation costs are included. Admission fee or other optional activity fees for guests and tour guides are not included.

  Included:

  • English speaking guide
  • Photo opportunities
  • Food and drinks
  • Souvenirs (available for purchase)
  • Hotel pickup and drop-off

Additional Information

As the shrines in Japan are sacred places, we ask that all guests dress appropriately (no short skirts or shorts, or articles of clothing with an excessive amount of skin exposure). We also recommend smart casual attire with comfortable shoes, as there will be a moderate amount of walking.

Age Requirement

There is no age requirement, but a reservation must be made for all guests, and the cost is the same for all ages.

All bookings are payable via Stripe (Booking Checkout) or Flywire. Confirmations regarding your booking will be sent at least 10 days before your activity date.

Cancellation Policy

Standard Cancellation Policy:

  • We will charge a cancellation fee of 100% if booking is cancelled 5 days or less before event
  • We will charge a cancellation fee of 50% if booking is cancelled 7 days or less before event
  • We will charge a cancellation fee of 25% if booking is cancelled 10 days or less before event ays before your activity date.

There is a non-refundable 3% service fee for all bookings. Refunds (that are not subject to a cancellation fee) will include the ticket price less the 3% service fees. If an event is cancelled or postponed by Japan Awaits, refunds will be for the entire purchase—that includes the ticket price and the service fees.

What is the purpose of this tour?

In this tour, guests will learn how the Japanese people commemorate and pay their respects to those who have perished from war, the issues that civilians faced during WWII such as starvation, how Japanese soldiers felt and behaved during the war, learn why kamikaze (also known as tokotai) was so prevalent and how the soldiers told their family members before their inevitable fates.

Will this be a sensitive topic for some people?

While the purpose of this tour is to educate and inform about Modern Japanese history (from over 70 years ago until recent times), it may still be a sensitive topic to some people. We really hope that everyone who comes will keep an open mind and will not put our tour guides in a difficult situation; if the tour guide may feel threatened at any point, please note that the tour may have to end and the tour guide may contact local law enforcement if necessary.

How far in advance should I book?

Preparing a customized tour requires some time, especially if reservations for restaurants or other venues are required. We recommend making a reservation as early as possible. Ideally, it should be 3 months before your travel date, or 1 month before the travel date at the very least. For Custom Tour bookings that are requested with less than 7 days before the travel date, we may not be able to arrange your custom tour in time so your booking request may be cancelled and you will receive a full refund.

Why am I charged a service fee if I make a cancellation after you started planning the trip?

Organizing and planning a trip requires a lot of time and if we have made reservations on your behalf, it may be very challenging to cancel some booking requests. Once we receive your booking and your answers from the Custom Tour form, we will begin putting together your Itinerary Sheet and will start arranging your tour guide, buying tickets, making reservations at venues for your tour, etc. If you cancel the tour any time after we have sent you the custom Itinerary Sheet, the service fee of 15% of your total tour cost will be nonrefundable

Even today, the streets of Kyoto are lined with historical buildings that have coloured the times, and the entire town is a World Heritage Site in its entirety. In addition to the historical buildings, the Japanese culture of kimonos, paintings and tea ceremonies, as well as the taste of Japanese cuisine made from seasonal ingredients, are also attractive attractions of a trip to Kyoto. Let us guide you on a trip to Kyoto, a special World Heritage town that will grace your heart just by visiting.

Kyoto Tours

Shiretoko is located in the easternmost part of Hokkaido. Shiretoko is a popular travel destination, as World Natural Heritage Site which home to diverse ecosystems that connect the sea to the land. Composed of 1,500 m-high mountains, cliffs, rivers and forests, Shiretoko is a treasure trove of rare wildlife, where prehistoric nature comes alive. On nature tours from spring to summer, you can meet animals living in the overwhelmingly spectacular natural scenery. In winter, the Sea of Okhotsk is covered with drift ice. Walking on the drift ice or floating in the sea amongst it, you can enjoy a dynamic and extraordinary experience unique to the World Natural Heritage Site Shiretoko.

Shiretoko Tours

Shirakawa-go is a World Heritage Site where 100 gassho-style villages of various sizes blend into the surrounding nature, creating a nostalgic picture-postcard landscape. The beautiful scenery of traditional houses dotted across the tranquil countryside can be described as the original landscape of Japan. Gassho-zukuri is one of most famous and distinctive architectural styles. The name derives from its resemblance to the way people put their palms together for pray. The gassho-zukuri, a unique building method that does not use a single nail, symbolises the wisdom and culture of the people who live in harmony with the natural environment and is a valuable architectural heritage of Shirakawa-go that should be preserved for the future.

Gifu

Nara has three World Heritage Sites: Houryuu-ji Temple, Ancient Nara and the Kii Mountain Range. Especially Ancient Nara, Japanese oldest capital, is the most popular tourist spot that has handed down the art, culture and thought of ancient Japan, and the entire town is registered as a World Heritage Site. The streets of Ancient Nara, which all over the world travellers once admired as 'the end point of the Silk Road', have been so modern and charming town for 1,400 years. The historical buildings that have coloured the city's history for as long as 1,400 years and the natural scenery of the four seasons still attract many travellers, and the pleasant breeze blowing in Ancient Nara invites us longing for the romance of prehistoric times.

Nara Tours

Hiroshima has two World Heritage Sites. The first one is the Atomic Bomb Dome in the center of Hiroshima, registered as a World Heritage Site as a witness to the history of the first atomic bomb dropped in the world in 1945, and also as a symbol of prayer for the abolition of nuclear weapons and lasting peace. Another one is Itsukushima Shrine in Miyajima. The vivid vermilion-painted temple standing in the Seto Inland Sea is one of Japan's three most spectacular sights. Itsukushima Shrine changes its mysterious appearance with the ebb and flow of the waves, season after season or hour after hour. A tour around the two World Heritage Sites of the Atomic Bomb Dome and Miyajima is a popular sightseeing plan for Hiroshima travel.

Hiroshima Tours

Yakushima, located south of Kagoshima, is the island to be inscribed as first World Natural Heritage site in Japan. It is known as 'Alps of the Sea' with region of 1,800 m high mountains. The natural landscape changes with altitude and the diverse flora and fauna that inhabit it. It is a treasure trove of nature where you can enjoy the breath of primitive times to your heart's content. Trekking through the primeval forest is one of the most popular activities on Yakushima. The scenery of giant trees, moss-covered rocks and valleys that have been here for thousands of years is just like something out of a film. You have to come to Yakushima to encounter this spectacular scenery, which is far beyond our imagination.

World champion Shirai Sora cruised his way to the top of the men’s semifinal at skateboarding 's WST Dubai Street 2024 event on Sunday (10 March).

After yesterday's semifinal was postponed due to adverse weather conditions, it was decided the two-45-second run - best run counts - format would be used for the semifinal to allow time for the final also later today.

The 22-year-old Japanese skater put down a ‘safe’ first run to score 78.92 points before stuffing the second with upgrades including the ‘Sora' grind - alley-oop frontside 180 fakie 5-0 - to rocket up the leaderboard into first place with a 92.03.

Trailing Shirai was Slovakia’s Richard Tury (88.88), Portugal’s Gustavo Ribeiro (85.34) and Japanese world runner-up Netsuke Kairi (84.52).

Horigome Yuto was among those who were not able to advance to the final. The Olympic champion failed to put a clean run down on his first attempt and his second scored only 71.90, meaning he finished in ninth, missing the cut by 0.13 points.

Vincent Milou , who had topped both the open qualifier and quarterfinal, also failed to advance.

Porn Star Rocco Siffredi’s Netflix Bio-Series ‘Supersex’ Is More Tedious Than Sexy: TV Review

Supersex. (L to R) Alessandro Borghi as Rocco, Gaia Messerklinger as Moana in episode 104 of Supersex. Cr. Lucia Iuorio/Netflix © 2024

Loosely based on the experiences of real-life porn sensation Rocco Siffredi , known as the “Italian Stallion,” Netflix ’s “ Supersex ” isn’t actually very sexy at all. Instead, the seven-part series, created by Francesca Manieri, is a tale about family, masculinity and toxic bonds. While the show, which stars Alessandro Borghi in the lead role, has some interesting chapters, the surrealist elements — including some hallucinatory moments and the bizarre way some of the sex scenes are filmed — make it more than a biographical account. Instead, it’s an overly complex examination of relationships and the vices people indulge in to escape their emotional turmoil.

Series opener “Superpower” acts mainly as a coming-of-age story. Following Rocco’s retirement news, the show zips back to 1974. Ten-year-old Rocco Tano feels trapped in the impoverished rural town of Ortona and lost in the chaos of his family life. His mother is devoted to his mentally disabled brother Claudio, and Rocco lives in the shadow of his charismatic older half-brother, Tommaso (Adriano Giannini). Tommaso is Rocco’s North Star. He represents a type of freedom and hypermasculinity that appears out of reach for the men of Ortona. Tommaso also has the love of the town’s most stunning woman, Lucia (Jasmine Trinca), which only endears Rocco to him further.

In addition to examining Rocco’s family dynamic, “Supersex” zooms in on his fixation on sex, which begins at a very young age. The series unpacks his crush on Lucia and later his discovery of “Supersex,” a pornography magazine starring Gabriel Pontello. The euphoria from observing and later engaging in sex is a feeling Rocco chases across the next three decades. But his sex work comes at the expense of his mental health. It also destroys the romances and familial bonds he tries to form and maintain.

Despite a lifelong admiration of Tommaso’s machismo, his brother’s treatment of Lucia, who funds their lifestyle through her sex work on the streets of Paris, slowly shifts Rocco’s point of view. An invitation to a sex club awakens previously unknown desires. Becoming a porn star gives him financial security, but his inner turmoil stems from trying to live up to the expectations his family places on him.

“Supersex” dwells far too long on Rocco’s dysfunctional brotherhood with Tommaso, giving the toxic and exhausting connection unneeded exposition. Fewer episodes and less time spent on the self-destructive café manager would have kept the storyline squarely on Rocco’s psyche. Moreover, Manieri positions Lucia’s life as a counternarrative to Rocco’s. As with Rocco’s female co-stars, she isn’t allowed the same agency and status he obtains. Women are sexualized and then vilified for being sexual in the same breath. While Lucia eventually finds herself on a new path, it’s not without suffering and sacrifice, difficulties Rocco never contends with. The pair are an intriguing juxtaposition, but this mirroring gets muddled under their dark pull toward Tommaso. Similarly, Rocco’s enthusiasm for rough sex acts is never fully explored.

Still, “Supersex” makes some smart choices. Intercourse and other types of sex are showcased, of course, but these scenes aren’t gratuitous. Instead, they illustrate Rocco’s emotional state as he deals with loss and yearning or even demonstrate his self-worth.

The penultimate episode, “Resurrection of the Bodies,” is the standout and centers on Rocco’s return to Ortona amid his mother’s illness and one of the biggest highlights of his career, winning best European actor at the Hot d’Or Awards. In 53 minutes, Rocco confronts the effects of shame and how so-called family members react to him when he’s no longer playing by their rules.

Though Rocco’s story is solidly depicted, audiences hoping for a bio-series-type narrative won’t find it here. It’s also worth noting that Netflix offers a dubbed English version, but the show is best viewed in Italian with subtitles. Overall, “Supersex” isn’t just an examination of one man’s life and career but a look at the lives people create, however unconventional, when they dare to move through the world as their most authentic selves.

“Supersex” premieres March 6 on Netflix .

Kōji Yakusho sits naked in a public toilet/wash house in Tokyo in a scene from Perfect Days.

Tokyo offers toilet tours amid flush of excitement over Wim Wenders’s Oscar hopeful

Shibuya district is offering tours of its architect-designed public facilities that feature in Perfect Days

Japan’s hi-tech toilets have long fascinated visitors who rave about their heated seats, bidet function, automatic flushing, and even background noises to mask the unwelcome sounds that can accompany the call of nature.

Now, international interest in the country’s public conveniences is surging thanks to the German director Wim Wenders , whose film Perfect Days – the story of Hirayama ( Kōji Yakusho ), a Tokyo toilet cleaner – is in the reckoning for best international feature at Sunday’s Academy Awards.

Authorities in the Shibuya neighbourhood, whose toilets appear in the film, are leveraging the publicity by offering tours of 17 facilities designed by acclaimed architects, including Tadao Ando and Shigeru Ban.

Kazoo Sato’s contactless toilet

Given a choice between locations in the east or west of Shibuya ward, a city within a city of almost 230,000 people, the Observer joined half a dozen amateur toilet enthusiasts on the latter route – only the second of the twice-weekly “shuttle” tours since they began at the start of the month.

Our first stop was Nabeshima Shoto park, where the occasional taxi driver, emerging from Kengo Kuma ’s wooden structure, looked understandably disconcerted to be greeted by tourists taking photographs.

Kuma, who designed the main stadium for the pandemic-delayed Tokyo 2020 Olympics , said he had used cedar planks to help the facility blend in with its park surroundings.

Kengo Kuma’s Walk in the Woods public loos in Shibuya, part of the Tokyo Toilet project.

The architect describes his creation as a “toilet village”, its five huts catering to men and women, families, and wheelchair users, with another for “dressing and grooming”. The forest theme of Kuma’s Walk in the Woods continues inside, where the cubicle walls are embellished with cross-sections of tree trunks.

The idea of building new structures in parts of the ward where existing facilities had seen better days is at the heart of the Tokyo Toilet project , a collaboration between Koji Yanai, an executive at the Japanese clothing giant Uniqlo, the nonprofit Nippon Foundation and the Shibuya authorities.

“We are trying to change the image of public toilets as dark, dirty and dangerous,” says Yumiko Nishi of the Shibuya City Tourism Association.

Since the project reached completion last year, most media attention has been on Shigeru Ban’s coloured “smart glass” toilets, whose walls are suppposed to turn opaque when the cubicles are occupied.

The Pritzker prize-winning architect has said that he was inspired by two concerns people have when they approach a public toilet, especially in a dimly lit park.

“The first is cleanliness,” he said, “and the second is whether anyone is inside.”

Our group was unable to see the toilet walls in action, however. Cold winter weather means it takes longer for the glass to turn opaque – a glitch that would put off even the most desperate visitors. To ensure modesty is protected, the cubicles will remain in a state of constant opacity until mid-May.

At the Andon toilet, where users are greeted by bright green cubicle doors, we encountered a real-life Hirayama armed with a bucket and mop, the toilet project’s name emblazoned on the back of his overalls.

Each of the project’s toilets are cleaned three times a day and checked monthly by a “toilet consultant”. All are wheelchair accessible.

Sou Fujimoto’s Vessels and Fountains.

The two-hour tour ended in front of the dazzling white walls and undulating curves of Sou Fujimoto’s Vessels and Fountains – a combination of toilets and public handwashing facilities positioned at different heights to encourage children to use them.

The idea, Fujimoto said, is to “create a small community of people … a new type of public space where people can gather and communicate around water”.

Cities in other countries can only look at Tokyo with envy as they wrestle with a shortage of public toilets , and complaints about safety and cleanliness. The Japanese capital, a city of 14 million people, has 53 public toilets for every 100,000 residents. London, by contrast, has 14 per 100,000 people.

While it came after the toilet initiative, Perfect Days has added weight to the idea that Japan ’s abundant public restrooms should be clean and welcoming – a mindset instilled at school, where children are expected to take turns cleaning the lavatories.

The project is having the desired effect. A survey by the Nippon Foundation found that satisfaction among users of the 17 redesigned facilities has soared from 44% to nearly 90%, while the proportion with a negative view of public toilets in general dropped from 30% to just 3%.

“People who previously didn’t give much thought to public toilets have started to take an interest in them,” the foundation’s executive director, Junpei Sasakawa, said when management of the project was transferred to Shibuya officials last year.

Kōji Yakusho in Perfect Days

Yakusho, who is hoping to add Oscar success to his best actor award at Cannes last year, spends more than half of his time on screen cleaning lavatories.

In one scene, Hirayama’s less conscientious colleague Takashi [Tokio Emoto], asks him: “How can you put so much effort into a job like this?”

Whatever his reasons, Tokyoites can count themselves fortunate to have a real-life Hirayama at the vanguard of a movement to transform public toilets from unloved necessities into sources of civic pride.

Yuriko, a tour participant who had just inspected a cubicle, said the unusual tourist attractions had been worth every yen of the ¥4,950 [£26] fee.

“I’m not sure why, but I’ve always been fascinated by toilets,” she said, adding that she had been most impressed by Kazoo Sato’s contactless toilet – a white dome with a slice taken out to accommodate the cubicle entrances.

“When I saw this tour mentioned on the Tokyo Toilet project’s Instagram account, I knew I had to come. It’s not just that they’re clean and modern, they’re really stylish too.”

Singapore Has Taylor Swift to Itself This Week, and the Neighbors Are Complaining

The country is defending paying the pop star to play nowhere else in Southeast Asia. Thailand’s prime minister said the price was up to $3 million per show.

Taylor Swift has descended on Southeast Asia, or one small part of it at least: All of her six sold-out shows are in Singapore, the region’s wealthiest nation.

Many of her fans in this part of the world, which is home to more than 600 million people, are disappointed. But the Singapore leg of Ms. Swift’s wildly popular Eras Tour , which began last weekend and ends on Saturday, is a soft power coup and a boost for the country’s post-pandemic economic recovery.

The shows — and the undisclosed price that Singapore paid to host them — have also generated diplomatic tension with two of its neighbors, Thailand and the Philippines.

Last month, Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin of Thailand said publicly that Singapore had paid Ms. Swift up to $3 million per show on the condition that she play nowhere else in Southeast Asia. A lawmaker in the Philippines later said that was not “what good neighbors do.”

Singapore pushed back. First its culture minister said the actual value of the exclusivity deal — which he declined to name — was “ nowhere as high .” The country’s former ambassador at large later called the criticism “ sour grapes .” And on Tuesday, Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong told reporters that he did not see the deal as diplomatically “unfriendly.”

But that was no solace to dejected fans.

“I sometimes think ‘When will I get to experience this?’” said Sherin Nya Tamara, 26, a Swift fan in Jakarta, Indonesia, who has liked the singer since 2011 but has never seen her perform live. “I was hoping there would be additional dates and that Jakarta would be included, but nope.”

At a time when Southeast Asian governments are dealing with tensions over the South China Sea and the fallout from a brutal war in Myanmar, among other serious issues, the controversy over Ms. Swift’s Singapore shows is “kind of refreshing,” said Susan Harris Rimmer, a law professor who has studied soft power in the region.

“It’s nice to see them arguing about something this fun, I guess, instead of really, deeply difficult things,” added Professor Harris Rimmer, who teaches at Griffith University in Australia. “But it does show there is tension and jealousy and rivalry.”

Ms. Swift’s concerts in Singapore, which follow her stops in Japan and Australia , would have been a big deal anyway. But they took on geopolitical overtones last month, when Mr. Srettha said at a business forum that Singapore had paid the artist as much as $3 million per show in order to guarantee that they would be her only tour stops in Southeast Asia.

Mr. Srettha said that he had learned the details of Singapore’s grant to the artist from the concert promoter, AEG Presents. Representatives for the promoter and for Ms. Swift did not immediately respond to requests for comment on Tuesday.

An exclusivity deal around a concert, a kind of noncompete agreement known as a “radius clause,” is standard practice in the music industry, said Susan Abramovitch, the head of the entertainment and sports law division at the international law firm Gowling WLG.

“That being said, this territorial exclusivity is more typically measured in hundreds of miles from a city rather than covering entire neighboring countries,” she said, adding that the scope of the Singapore deal was a kind of “Taylor-esque magnification” of the industry standard.

It hasn’t been received well outside Singapore.

Late last month, a lawmaker in the Philippines generated headlines by saying that he had asked the country’s Department of Foreign Affairs to discuss the exclusivity clause with the Singaporean government, saying that it had come at the expense of neighboring countries.

The lawmaker, Rep. Joey Salceda, said this week that he had raised the issue after realizing how difficult and expensive it would be for Filipinos, including members of his own staff, to attend the concerts.

“ASEAN’s core principles are solidarity and consensus,” he said in an interview, referring to the Association of Southeast Asian Nations. “What happened? They even used their tourism board to block other nations.”

Asked on Tuesday how much the grant was worth, the Singaporean government did not directly address the question. But the Tourism Board and the Culture Ministry said in a joint statement that Ms. Swift’s concerts, for which more than 300,000 tickets had been sold, would likely “generate significant benefits” for the domestic economy.

Prime Minister Lee was also asked about the grant on Tuesday at an ASEAN conference in Australia. He said it had been funded by a post-Covid tourism recovery effort and that he did not see the exclusivity clause as being “unfriendly” to other countries.

“If we had not made such an arrangement, would she have come to someplace else in Southeast Asia or more places in Southeast Asia?” he said, speaking in Melbourne. “Maybe, maybe not.”

News of the regional backlash to the grant was reported earlier by The Wall Street Journal , The Diplomat and other news outlets.

Professor Harris Rimmer said that, financial incentives aside, Singapore is a logical place for Swift to play in Southeast Asia, in part because it is safe for young female fans and has excellent transport links to the rest of the region. She said Ms. Swift’s glamorous mystique also fits nicely with Singapore’s efforts to promote itself as the “glamour kitten of Asia.”

“I don’t think she needs Singapore’s money, at this point,” she added.

Some Swifties have made their peace with the singer’s limited itinerary in their region. Mostly.

Jose Bunachita, 30, a writer in the Philippine city of Cebu, said that he saw Ms. Swift in Japan last month, and that his 11-day trip there had cost around $1,500. “I had the time of my life singing my heart out,” he said.

Still, he said, “I also feel like it would have been more of a fun experience if a majority of the concertgoers had been fellow Filipino Swifties.”

Taylor Swift Eras Tour takes over Japan as fans watch out for Super Bowl appearance

T he Taylor Swift phenomenon swept Asia this week, with fans from across the continent flocking to Japan to see the latest leg of the American pop star’s Eras Tour — while those at home are hoping she can make it back to the U.S. in time to watch boyfriend Travis Kelce in the Super Bowl on Sunday.

The streets of Tokyo, where Swift is playing four sold-out shows from Wednesday to Saturday, have been swept with snow and the excited buzz of fans from around the world.

Katherine Medina, a 29-year-old from the Dominican Republic who lives in Japan, attended the Thursday show at the 55-seat Tokyo Dome.

“I was sitting next to a girl from China. The girls in front of me were from the Philippines. A girl behind me was from the United States, Indiana,” she said.

Medina, who was sitting separately from her friends, said they had the same experience, forging instant connections with the Swift fans around them even if there were language barriers.

“Maybe they don’t have the ‘How are you?’ conversation, but they were like crying together,” she said.

Among those in the audience at Swift’s first show on Wednesday was Rosé from the South Korean girl group Blackpink, who posted video of herself singing along to the 10-minute version of “All Too Well.”

Japan is the first stop in Asia for Swift’s Eras Tour, which began last year and is the first to break the billion-dollar mark , while giving a boost to local economies as well.

Ticket revenue and other spending related to the four shows in Japan are estimated to have an economic impact of 34 billion yen ($230 million), according to the Economic Impact Research Laboratory.

“That’s just from one person performing four nights!” said Mitsumasa Etou, a researcher at Tokyo City University who did the calculation.

Japan is the world’s second-largest music market after the United States, but live music was hampered during the Covid-19 pandemic by border closures and other restrictions.

“We’ve had a rather long period where we didn’t actually have a lot of artists coming to Japan because of Covid,” said Barbara Greene, a lecturer in contemporary Japanese culture at Tokyo International University. “And I think Swift is the first really huge artist that people can’t wait to see.”

Since Kelce’s Kansas City Chiefs advanced to the Super Bowl, there has been fevered speculation as to whether Swift can make it to Las Vegas in time for the Sunday afternoon game after her Saturday-night concert in Tokyo.

Not to worry, the Japanese Embassy in Washington says, noting that Tokyo is 17 hours ahead of Las Vegas — a time difference that works in her favor traveling toward the U.S.

“We wanted to confirm that anyone concerned can be Fearless in knowing that this talented performer can wow Japanese audiences and still make it to Las Vegas to support the Chiefs when they take the field for the Super Bowl wearing Red ,” the embassy said in a Feb. 2 statement .

After the Super Bowl, Swift heads to Australia for seven concerts in Melbourne and Sydney later this month, then to Singapore for six concerts in March.
