The  Hana Highway , or The Road to Hana as it’s more well known, is a 64.4-mile-long portion of Hawaii Routes 36 and 360. The highway connects tourists and locals alike from the town of Kahului in Central Maui to the town of Hana in East Maui . The “road” has been around since the 16th century. Then known as The Kings Trail, it was ordered by Chief Piilani who wanted to be able to travel from village to village by foot rather than by canoe on the ocean.

Modern (wider dirt and rock) roads were built in the late 1800s to facilitate the movement of people and products to and from the plantations in Hana. Sugar cane mills along with rubber and pineapple plantations thrived in Hana at that time, making the construction of better roadways to and from Kahului and Paia a must. The highway wasn’t paved until 1962 and even then there were still unpaved stretches. Surprisingly, the highway was not fully paved until the 1980s.

I was pleasantly surprised with the temptation tours luxury road to Hana experience. Although it was a bit pricey, I felt the entirety of the tour was well worth the amount. I saw everything on east maui that I wanted to ... see and some more. The tour guides were personal and informative. I was very happy I booked a full guided tour instead of doing a self drive. My partner and I got the full day we dreamt of when visiting the island of Maui!

Ernie was our tour guide and he was awesome! So informative and knowledgeable and educated us the entire time about the plants, fruits and land. You left feeling connected to the island and wanting more! So welcoming, so ... great. Besides the many waterfalls, black sand beach and Ernie as our guide it was well worth every penny!

In the event of a refund claim for one of these reasons, Project Expedition will verify the cruise ship’s actual itinerary before processing a refund. To be eligible for a refund, you must submit your claim in writing no later than 14 days after the scheduled date of the Shore Excursion. Back to Ship Guarantee Project Expedition guarantees that you will get back to your ship on time, provided that all of the following requirements apply: - The Shore Excursion you booked offers the Back to Ship Guarantee. - Your Shore Excursion is scheduled to end no less than 2 hours prior to the scheduled departure time of your cruise ship. It is your responsibility to confirm your ship’s departure time prior to booking, in addition to re-confirming the ship’s itinerary on the day of the Shore Excursion. - You have not changed or deviated from the original itinerary of the Shore Excursion that you booked on Project Expedition. - The delay in returning to the ship was due to no fault or action of your own. In the event that you are not returned back to your cruise ship before it departs, Project Expedition will cover up to USD $500 per person towards transportation and/or accommodation necessary to travel to the next port of call. Receipts are required for reimbursement.

My husband and I just returned from Maui where we did 2 tours with Temptation Tours - I'll review the Sunrise Tour here, but both were excellent. Bottom Line: do it! The sun rising through the clouds from the top of the volcano is maybe the coolest thing I've seen and we have traveled a lot. Done in the hands of people who know the best tips - a very, very good idea! They pick you up at your hotel at ~ 3 am (varying slightly, depending on time of year you go), drive you to the top (so you can remain in a coma - this is good to do once you arrive, since you will have jet lag anyway and its pitch black - not a fun drive i am sure as we did it another day during the day) and take care of you all the way! Our guide was Scott and he was wonderful! A really, really nice, knowledgeable, professional but fun person. If you are imagining a perfect experience, he's that kind of guy. He has done it many times but is still excited/excited for you and helps you get the best locations, best tips and BEST PHOTOS - he actually showed us how best to use our cameras/phones to get the best shots (and of course best spots). They are so great! For once I have great photos of a spectacular site!! Thanks Scottie!!!! It is clear that you really enjoy what you are doing - thanks also for the tip on Mama's - it was awesome! I packed gloves, neck warmer, big sweatshirt (with a couple layers under it) and thermal running pants and still needed the extra jacket that Scott happened to have available. We had a perfect day though. It was cold but i never felt it was not bearable (but I think it was kinda 'warmish' on our day). The tour was also able to accommodate my 'wierdo diet' - i have many food allergies but the breakfast at the Kula Lodge was great! I am also now stalking the Kula Marketplace - I can't wait until my stuff arrives - best PB ever!! Before booking I was worried that my only chances at food would be things I couldn't eat, but speaking with the reps on the phone prior, they assured me that they would accommodate me and they did! If you have concerns, call them first - they can help you! The tour starts and stops at the times it lists and you never feel rushed. The van is comfy. Not much more I can say. My boyfriend and I had just returned from Maui and we booked this company for two different tours: The Road to Hana and Cavern Tour and the Haleakala national park and Lavender Sojourn Tour. Both of the tours were excellent and top notch! Prior to these two tours -- my boyfriend and I were doing different activities every single day and finally having these two days where we can sit back, not worry about navigating or driving, RELAX and full enjoy the scenery TOGETHER was worth it! These two tours take up the whole day.. about 9-10 hours each tour. We were picked up from our hotel on time in the early AM and the Limo Van was VERY clean, cool, comfortable, spacious, and fit a total of 9 people (including the driver). I really love how they keep their groups small, which allows for some personalization of the tour. For example, my tour guide Michael had said -- "depending on how you guys feel..energy level and other factors, we can go to ______ because i know you'll love it" I also loved how stress free i felt about the time limits for each stop -- I constantly kept hearing the words "take your time", which is a HUGE plus and something i ABSOLUTELY love about this company. Who wants to be on TIME restraints when on vacation??! i surely dont! as for the guides-- I had Michael and Steve and they were both WONDERFUL! both were VERY knowledgeable about the customs, plants, food, history --everything Hawaiian! Steve was a little bit more quiet (which was not a bad thing) but I think it was because there was another 2 people in my group during steve's tour and I didn't ask too much questions. As for Michael's Tour ( Lavender Sojourn tour) --it was just me, my boyfriend, and Michael --and we both enjoy learning history and customs -- so we kept picking at Michael's brain (and he answered every single question, pretty impressive!) and there was a lot of talking with that tour. Overall the guides were excellent, kind, knowledgeable, articulate, and fun! and judging by the way they talk about Hawaii -- you can tell that they truly LOVE the hawaii and seem happy sharing the customs of the Hawaiians. I read that some guides kept repeating that the tips are how they guides get paid --however I did not experience that -- in fact steve mentioned it ONCE and Michael did not even mention anything about tips! Breakfast and Lunch are included in the price -- while you were enjoying the scenery, your guide will set up a cute picnic area with a table cloth, utensils, drinks, wraps, dessert. Your guide would tell you what you were eating/ what was on the menu -- much like a restaurant ! The lunch was quite excellent for a "picnic" style lunch -- my favorite was the ONO wrap (so good!) but they also have a chicken wrap --they also had some yummy pasta salad and brownies! Overall, If one of your days in muai you are tried from the physical activities you've done (snorkeling, hiking, rappelling down a waterfall) and need a change of pace from it---definitely check out temptation tours. You will get a relaxing, stress free tour of Maui, with amazing scenery and some insight to Hawaiian language, customs, plants, food, history! A little tip: Bring Soap (if you are germ-a-phobic like me) for the road to hana tour because bathroom stops had no soap in their bathrooms/port-a-potties (although steve did provide hand sanitizer)..You dont need soap for the lavendar sojourn tour because the stops had bathrooms that provided soap.

My husband and I just returned from a cruise of the islands and took the Summit Lavender Sojourn tour. First the people were friendly, the tour guide Michael was extremely knowledgeable and accommodating, the vehicle very comfortable, and seeing Haleakala was simply amazing - a true highlight of our trip. They rate a 5. However, I wish the tour had ended after the visit to the volcano and was priced accordingly. With such a short time in Maui, we found the afternoon wasted and the cost pricey. The lavender gardens (a small garden), the vineyard (a small house) and the cowboy town (just a few shops and restaurants not even on the water) would score a 1 on the rating sheet. So the average is a 3.

The ultimate guide to the Road to Hana

Writing the ultimate guide to the Road to Hana took me a while. I was asked for this for years , no exaggeration. So, without further ado, I present the most comprehensive guide to the Road to Hana in Maui!

The Road to Hana is a very popular day trip on the island of Maui. Why? Because it has some truly spectacular stuff along the way. Waterfalls, bamboo forests, and breathtaking views of Maui’s natural beauty are all on this scenic drive.

This should go without saying, but you’ll need a rental car for the Road to Hana unless you plan to explore by helicopter. If you don’t have a rental car yet, I recommend Discount Hawaii Car Rental . You’ll find the best deals on any of the Hawaiian Islands.

What is the Road to Hana?

The Road to Hana is a scenic and famous 64-mile long, narrow, curving, twisting two-lane paved highway along the western coast of Maui in Hawaii. It is part of the Hawaiian state highway system and stretches from Paia to finish at Hana Town.

It is technically called the Hana Highway, and the most important thing to remember is that it’s the journey, not the destination.

The Road to Hana is rated as one of Hawaii’s best scenic drives, and it is probably the most famous drive in all of Hawaii.

You may think 64 miles won’t take long, but you’d be wrong with 59 one-lane bridges and over 600 turns!

This beautiful drive is full of lush rainforest cliffs, waterfalls, valleys, and black, white, and red sand beaches, and it is definitely an all-day adventure.

Traffic on the Road to Hana

It’s important to remember that the Road to Hana is an actual road, and people take it to work. If you can pull over safely to let locals pass, it’s the right thing to do.

In 2021, the Hawaii Department of Transportation posted “no parking” signs along the Road to Hana. There are places to stop, so make sure you stop in these designated areas to avoid disturbing the normal traffic flow.

Please be respectful

I can’t emphasize enough that people live and work in upcountry Maui. The area’s residents have been affected by illegal parking, trespassing, and all of the crazy traffic that this popular tourist attraction brings.

Please remember that people do live and work here. Only park in designated areas, and please, never trespass.

And yes, visiting the red sand beach is trespassing, which is why you’ll find no mention of it here. Be kind to the locals and check out 30 things you should never do in Hawaii to avoid being “that tourist.”

Mile markers on the Road to Hana

You’re not going crazy; mile markers on the Road to Hana are confusing. They start over after 16. Also, after Hana, they jump to 51 and then go backward. You have been warned.

The good news is that despite the mile markers, there is just one round going around the island’s east side, and it would be tough to get lost.

Now, let’s get into some common questions about the Road to Hana.

How long does the Road to Hana take?

It takes about two and a half hours to drive the Road to Hana, and that is with minimal stops for pictures and such. It’s doable in about two hours going straight through, but what’s the point of that?

I always tell my clients to plan for the Road to Hana to be an all-day adventure. I actually recommend driving the “backroad to Hana” home, but more on that later.

If you’re looking to get away from the crowds, you’re going to want to start very early. Since jet lag will be a problem, I recommend driving the Road to Hana early in your vacation.

What time of the year is best to visit?

There is no wrong time to visit Maui. The Road to Hana will be crawling with tourists, but that’s part of the fun! It’s excellent during whale season (November through March or so) because you might even see some whales along the way.

What to pack for the Road to Hana

The Road to Hana is an all-day adventure, so I recommend packing some snacks and water in a small cooler. You can stop at many fruit stands along the way if you’re hungry or thirsty.

You can stop for lunch in Hana, but keep in mind there aren’t many restaurants outside of Hana other than fruit stands.

Other necessary items for the Road to Hana:

• Comfortable walking shoes, I recommend Teva sandals .
• Pocket poncho s, you never know when the rain will start!
• Cash: some of the stops along the way (such as fruit stands) only accept cash for payment
• A camera or GoPro
• While Hawaii is relatively safe, a small backpack to carry your things, I don’t recommend leaving your belongings in a rental car.
• A bathing suit or an extra set of clothes. You never know when you’ll get muddy, wet, etc. Plus, having a bathing suit is nice if you decide to hop in the water somewhere.
• Reef-safe sunscreen , while you’ll be covered by the trees for some of the days, any beach stops or anywhere that isn’t surrounded by the rainforest will require some sunscreen.

What is the best way to see the Road to Hana?

You have three options for seeing the Road to Hana for yourself.

• Driving it yourself
• Taking a driving tour
• Taking a helicopter tour

I highly recommend the first or third option. If driving yourself isn’t an option, I recommend a helicopter tour over a guided driving tour. The Road to Hana is narrow, and only small busses are allowed.

This can make for some very claustrophobic conditions on a road, bringing out motion sickness in almost anyone. The idea of being shoved into a small van with lots of people on the Road to Hana is a nightmare for me, so I would not recommend it.

That said, a private tour might be doable, but again, if you’re prone to motion sickness, I would not recommend anything where you have to be in the back of a car.

Recommended tools for motion sickness:

On my most recent trip to Maui, I used an Emeterm motion sickness band , and it worked! I didn’t feel sick on the Road to Hana or snorkeling Molokini Crater on a boat, both of which have always made me sick in the past! 

When is the best time to drive the Road to Hana?

Ideally, you’ll want to start the Road to Hana very early. I would recommend hitting the road as close to sunrise as possible. It starts to get crowded around 8-9 AM, so any time before this is ideal.

That said, the Road to Hana can be busy any time of day, so make sure to be patient and plan accordingly. You’ll also want to stop for gas in Paia.

While you want to start your journey early, you don’t want it to be dark when you start hitting the popular spots, so check the sunrise time and plan accordingly.

Driving to Road to Hana

The best tip for driving the Road to Hana is to not over-plan it. Yes, you’re going to want to “see it all,” but without several days to explore this beautiful area, you won’t be able to.

Where you can stop may be dictated by the crowds, so try to be flexible. Pick a few stops on your “must-see” list. Make sure to make a reservation if the stops require it, such as Waiʻānapanapa State Park.

As a Hawaii Travel Agent, I recommend driving the Road to Hana on the first day or two of your trip.

First, you’ll be up very early because your body will still be on mainland time. Also, if you do miss anything, you can always come back and explore a few days later.

The best stops on the Road to Hana.

Here are the best stops on the Road to Hana, listed from Paia to Hana and beyond. 

Fruit stands

Location: Everywhere

There are fruit and banana bread stands along the Road to Hana. Some of these fruit stands will have people working, and some are on the honor system. Fresh fruit, banana bread, and other local treats are a must-have for your Road to Hana drive.

Paia is the last stop before you officially begin your journey to Hana. Make sure to fill up your rental car with gas, grab some ice for your cooler and snacks if you don’t have them already, and get started!

Location: Mile Marker 2

Twin Falls is the very first of the waterfalls on the Road to Hana. You’ll always see cars parked here, so it’s easy to spot. There is a farm stand here if you want to grab some fresh produce or local snacks.

Is Twin Falls a “must-see”? While this is a beautiful spot, if the Road to Hana is already looking crowded, you can skip this spot since most people stop, and you may be able to get ahead of the crowds.

However, if you have small children and want an easily accessible waterfall, this is a great stop!

Rainbow Eucalyptus Grove

Location: Mile Marker 7

The most well-known grove of rainbow eucalyptus trees is near mile marker 7 on the Road to Hana. If parking is an issue, I would recommend stopping at Ke’anae Arboretum instead.

Ho’okipa Lookout

Location: Mile Marker 9

I recommend stopping at the lookout, but not the beach park itself. Ho’okipa Beach park is not the best park for swimming, although it’s a great place to watch surfers! Unless you know what you’re doing, I would advise not trying to surf here.

Waikamoi Ridge Trail

Location: Mile Marker 9.5

Waikamoi Ridge Trail is a beautiful tree-covered hike with two loops. One look takes about 10 minutes, and the other takes about 30 minutes.

Garden of Eden Arboretum

Location: Mile Marker 10

Maui’s Garden of Eden is a less popular stop since you have to pay to get in. That said, this fantastic gem along the Road to Hana is a must-see!

Maui’s Garden of Eden is open from 8 am-4 pm daily. The current cost of admission (as of 2022) is $20 for adults and $10 for children. Military, Kama’aina, students, and AAA members are discounted. Children 5 and under are free.

The Garden of Eden features several trails, views of Puahokamoa Waterfall (no, you can not swim here), over 700 varieties of plants, real restrooms, and more. Plan to spend about 30 minutes to two hours here.

At the Garden of Eden, you can even Repel down Puohokamoa Waterfall with Rappel Maui . This is a unique excursion that I would recommend to anyone who loves adventure.

Fun fact: parts of Jurassic Park were filmed here. Do you know where most of the Jurassic Park movies were filmed?

Answer: Kauai.

Kaumahina State Wayside Park

Location: Mile Marker 12

Kaumahina State Wayside Park offers a lookout point, several trails, restrooms, and a picnic area.

Honomanū Bay

Location: Mile Marker 14

You shouldn’t try to drive down to the bay unless you have a 4×4 (check your rental agreements) but this beautiful spot is often missed. Honomanu Bay is an old fishing village and Taro plantation.

I talk about Honomanu Bay in my “where to find a black sand beach in Maui” post. There, I mention how it is important to note that this is more of a local beach popular for surfing and fishing.

Locals aren’t thrilled about the fact that more tourists have found their way to this beach. Unfortunately, some tourists are disrespectful, leaving trash and being the kind of tourist you don’t want to be.

If you do choose to visit Honomanu Bay, please be respectful (there are ancient burial grounds here as well,) and leave the place better than how you found it.

Ke’anae Peninsula

Location: Mile Marker 16

Located on the Ke’anae Peninsula, the Ke’anae Arboretum offers free entrance The Ke’anae Arbotetum sits beside Pi’inau’au Stream and within a rainforest.

Visitors can take a short walk on a paved walkway and see over 150 varieties of plants from taro, hibiscus, papaya, ginger, and more. There are several other trails to enjoy and most of the plants are marked.

Just make sure not to pick any plant or flower! This is another great spot to see rainbow eucalyptus trees.

Halfway to Hana Stand

Location: Mile Marker 17

You can purchase banana bread all along the road to Hana, but many believe the banana bread at the Halfway to Hana stand is the best. You can also purchase other snacks and drinks.

Wailua Valley Wayside Park

Location: Mile Marker 18

Wailua Valley State Wayside is a “blink and you’ll miss it” spot. This isn’t a very popular stop on the Road to Hana, but it is a great place to get out and stretch your legs.

There are only a few parking spots, but you can get an excellent look at Wailua Valley (a perfect photo spot) so it’s worth a quick stop.

Upper Waikani Falls (Three Bears Falls)

Location: Mile Marker 19

Three Bears Falls is a very popular spot. How could it not be, with 3 side-by-side 70-foot waterfalls! Unfortunately, there is only parking for 2-3 cars. Do not park if there are no spots available.

You can drive up just a bit to another parking spot and walk back down. For me, this is a must-see on the Road to Hana and one of my favorite stops. 

Pua’a Kaa State Wayside Park

Location: Mile Marker 22

If you’re interested in a quick hike, this is one of the best stops on the Road to Hana! You can stretch your legs, hike to a waterfall, and, as a bonus, there are restrooms and a picnic area.

Hanawai Falls

Location: Mile Marker 24

Hanawai Falls is one of the many beautiful waterfalls on the Road to Hana. There are spots to pull off both before and after the bridge. Just make sure to park in a designated area. This beautiful waterfall is worth stopping for beautiful photos.

Ka’eleku Cave (Hana Lava Tube)

Location: Mile Marker 31

At Mile Marker 31, you’ll turn left on ‘Ula’ino Road and drive for about half a mile. You can access to Hana Lava Tube on the left. I would recommend bringing flashlights or headlamps – you’ll need them. If you don’t bring your own, you can use the ones provided. 

The Hana Lava Tube is open from 10:30 AM – 4:00 PM daily. There is an entrance fee of about $15 per person. Exploring Ka’ekeku Cave takes about 30-45 minutes.

There’s also a garden maze that would be great for kids to stretch their legs! The garden maze is behind us in the picture below. It’s such a beautiful place to stop!

Kahanu Gardens

Kahanu Garden is privately owned and available for self-guided tours. It is open from 9:00 AM to 3:00 PM Monday – Friday.

They recommend spending at least 30 minutes exploring the plants and archaeological and cultural features. Entrance is $16 for those 13 and up and free for children.

Reservations are appreciated although not required, you can book those here .

Wai’anapanapa State Park

Location: Mile Marker 32

Wai’anapanapa State Park is my #1 Road to Hana must-see. If you’re looking for the best stops on the Road to Hana, this is one of them! In fact, it’s so popular that you now need a reservation.

Wai’anapanapa State Park is home to Maui’s most famous black sand beach as well as two freshwater caves. The 150-acre park is also home to many ancient sites, including burial sites, a pictograph, and more.

This is a must-see if you’re interested in Hawaiian history. There are also several hiking trails within the park.

Estrella’s Hana Maui

There are lot of roadside stops for banana bread, fruit, and shave ice. Estrella’s has great options for shave ice, smoothies, fruit, and more! It was so delicious, and I’ll be stopping every time. Look for the big “Aloha” sign, you can’t miss it!

Location: Mile Marker 34

Hana Town hasn’t changed much in years; the locals like it that way. Hana is rich in both history and culture. I recommend checking out the Hana Cultural Center.

While in Hana, you can also grab some lunch or dinner, fill up your car with gas, and grab any snacks you might need.

Next, you’ll need to decide if you want to head back or go around the “back road to Hana.” I talk about this in my 7 best things to do in Maui post – one of my oldest blog posts!

I always recommend driving all the way around. A lot of stops are past Hana anyway, so why not keep going around all the way around on Highway 31? You’ll eventually end up in Kula and then make your way back toward Kahului and then on to the south or west side, wherever you’re staying.

It sounds more complicated than it is because, like the Road to Hana, there is basically only one road, so you can’t get lost.

Hamoa Beach

Location: Mile Marker 50

There aren’t a lot of great beaches for swimming along the Road to Hana, but Hamoa Beach is the exception. Accessing it can be difficult, but the calm water makes it worth it!

Koki Beach isn’t a great swimming beach, but it is a fantastic place to watch surfers.

Wailua Falls

Location: Mile Marker 45

This 80-foot waterfall is beautiful and my personal favorite. It’s easy to see from your car, but you should get out and take a closer look!

Kipahulu, Haleakala National Park

Location: Mile Marker 42

The Kipahulu district of Haleakala National Park is past Hana town and well worth the additional drive.

Kipahulu is home to some of the Road to Hana’s most famous stops, from the Pools at O’heo (Seven Sacred Pools), Pipiwai Trail, and Waimoku Falls.

You can also camp here, check out the visitors center (with real restrooms) and see more ancient Hawaiian ruins.

Palapala Ho’omau Church

Location: Mile Marker 41

Built-in 1857, this church is also the burial site of Charles Lindbergh. If you choose to stop here, again, please be respectful of the land and the people.

What is the “back road to Hana”

If you continue past Hana, past Wailua Falls, and past the Kipahalu district of Haleakala National Park, you’ll eventually find yourself all alone on Highway 360, which turns into Highway 31. (Pi’ilani Highway)

This is the point where most people turn around and go back, but I say the adventure is just getting started! Yes, it’s windy and narrow, but it’s no more dangerous than the road you’ve already traveled, and there are a few stops past this point that are worth seeing, such as:

• Kaupo Gap Trailhead
• Nu’u Refuge Nature Preserve
• Manawainui Gultch View Sea Cave

You’ll eventually circle back around and start heading north again. If you like wine, I recommend stopping at MauiWine near Kula. It’s a great winery, and you’ll be driving right past.

At this point, you’ll be very close to Wailea/Makena if you’re looking at a map. If you’re staying in Wailea you may wonder why there is no road from this area to Wailea??

Why is there no road between Highway 37 and Wailea?

I talk about this in my guide to upcountry Maui , but a fun and frustrating fact is that while Keokea and Highway 37 are very close to the Wailea area, no public road connects them.

There actually is a road. However, it’s rumored to be Oprah’s private road, and regular people are not allowed to use it. 😉

There are several rumors surrounding the road, but the most commonly held belief is that the private road (about 3 miles long) belongs to Oprah Winfrey.

In order to get home, you’ll continue north on what is now turned into Highway 37. You can take Highway 37 all the way to Kahului and then continue to either the south side (Wailea/Makena) or the West Side (Kaanapali/Lahaina), depending on where you are staying.

Should you stay in Hana for part of your Maui vacation?

As a Hawaii Travel Agent, I’m often asked if visitors should stay in the Hana area during their vacation. My answer is always no.

You absolutely can if you want to, but Maui is not a particularly large island, and you can definitely explore no matter where you are staying. If you would like to stay centrally in order to explore the entire island, I would recommend staying in the Wailea area. Some of my favorite resorts in the Wailea area are:

If you really want to stay near Hana, you do have a few choices.

Hana-Maui Resort

The  Hana-Maui Resort  is a luxury resort located near Hana. The hotel features an outdoor pool, spa services, and water sports rentals for both adults and children.

The Hana-Maui Resort is a great option for honeymooners or families with children. It offers world-class amenities while still providing the opportunity to experience daily regional activities and traditions.

While not all-inclusive, the Hana-Maui Resort is one of the only resorts offering a food-included package. But, of course, that comes at a premium!

The Ultimate Guide to The Road To Hana in Maui, Hawaii

The iconic Road to Hana is at the top of most travel’s “must do” list while visiting the island of Maui, Hawaii . I mean, there aren’t many road-trips in the world that offer numerous waterfalls, lush rainforest, hidden beaches and roadside banana bread pit-stops. While the Road to Hana itself is only 52 miles, don’t be fooled, this is (and should be) an all-day excursion, so plan accordingly! Here’s everything you need to know about planning your Road to Hana day trip.

What Direction Should You Drive the Road to Hana in?

The Road to Hana begins in the laid-back surf town of Paia and winds its way along the coast all the way to the more remote town of Hana. Most tourists approach the Road to Hana as an out-and-back trip and they might even spend a night in Hana town if time allows, but they typically return back the same way they came. What most people don’t realize is that the road doesn’t just magically end in Hana town. The road actually turns into Piilani Highway (or HI -37) which goes on to create a single large loop around the backside of Haleakala National park!! This takes approximately the same amount of time or less to do the full loop as it would to go there-and-back, due to there not being as much traffic!

In our case, we decided to go against the grain and approach the trip in reverse. Starting in Paia, heading to the Piilani Highway and then doing the Road to Hana in reverse. The views along the Piilani highway are very different from the Hana side, so it’s nice to see both! The scenery transforms from the lush jungle of Kipahulu, to ranchland, to dry grasslands, lavascapes, and ultimately back into lush green views of cloud-forest. Plus, going in the counter-clockwise direction allows you to get to the top tourist destinations like the bamboo forest and Waimoku falls first! AKA you’ll get all the epic destinations without crowds, or people in the background of all your epic instagram photos.

Do I Need 4-Wheel Drive to do the Road to Hana?

Not necessarily, most of the road is paved! There are a few bumpy and unpaved portions of the road, but you’d still be fine without 4WD. In my opinion, it’s just more fun to rent a Jeep when exploring the island, and that way you’ll have peace of mind about the road as well. 

What’s the Best Road to Hana Itinerary?

You can feel free to use the below recs in any order you want, but they’re given in the “reverse” route to avoid crowds, from Paia, looping back.

The Reverse Way to Hana

Stop 1- breakfast.

If you’re starting from Paia or the airport area, you can’t miss breakfast at Grandma’s Coffee House . A homey hangout for locals that serves up the best fresh coffee, enormous cinnamon rolls and the most epic Benedict served over cornbread waffles! This meal will last you until lunch all the way in Hana. From here, you’ll just be a few hundred feet away from the start of the back-road to Hana.

Head east towards Hana, and soon you’ll see the landscape begin to change form lush greens to dry grasses.

If you’re lucky enough to get a clear day, you might be able to peep the Big Island sitting just 26 miles off the coastline.

Turn on some groovy tunes (I have a ton of recs on Spotify here ) as you hit the open road. There are fewer stops on this side but a whole lot of natural beauty to enjoy! There are a few stretches of gravel along the way, but hey, that’s why you rented a Jeep right?

There are plenty of areas to pull off to take gorgeous photos! You might even stop and check out the old church right off the road. 

Stop 2- Haleakala National Park/Pipiwai Trail/Ohe’o Pools

Going the reverse direction will allow you to be one of the very first cars in the park! The Pipiwai trail is known for the beautiful bamboo forest and the magnificent Waikomu falls. While you’re in the park you can also hike to the Ohe’o pools (also known as the 7 sacred pools, even though this was only a name given to them by a nearby resort to attract more tourists). When it hasn’t been raining, the series of cascading pools are crystal clear.

The Pipiwai trail is 4 miles total (2 miles out, 2 miles back), so allot for approximately 1.5-2 hours, depending on your hiking capabilities. 

There is also $30 park entrance fee but you can use these same tickets to enter on volcano side to watch sunrise/sunset (which is an absolute MUST).

While the park no longer allows you to swim or get very close to the waterfall, it is still beautiful to see from afar!

From the park continue towards Hana Town.

Stop 3- Hana Town

After your hiking excursion, you’re probably starting to get hungry. Hana town is a little taste of old Hawaii. There are no strip malls or tourist shops here. Just a sleepy little beach town with some fire food truck options. We opted for Thai food by Pranee, but heard that Troy’s Fish Truck and Buddah Huts BBQ grill are top contenders, too.

Stop 4- Waianapanapa Black Sand Beach

Just 10 minutes past Hana Town is this gorgeous black sand beach. You can walk along the coast for even more views and visit a sea cave, blowhole, and lava fields. Keep in mind that this is one of the most popular destinations along the road to Hana and as of 3/1/2021 reservations are required. You can book reservations up to 14-days in advance. NO SAME DAY RESERVATIONS ALLOWED. The price for entry is $5 per pedestrian walk-in or $10 per car.

Stop 5- Coconut Glenn’s Ice Cream Stand

Coconut Glenns offers up 100% organic and 100% vegan ice cream made with coconut milk from coconuts harvested from the Maui jungle. It doesn’t get much fresher than this. Choose from flavors like  lilikoi, ginger lemongrass, chipotle chocolate, coffee toffee or play it safe with their classic coconut.

Stop 6- Hanawi Falls

Hanawi Falls is a fall waterfall located right after mile marker 24 on the Road to Hana. The waterfall is right next to the road, so there’s no hike in requires. We opted for a quick icey dip!

Stop 7- Upper Waikani Falls (3 Bears)

Located between mile marker 19 and 20 is the Upper Waikani Falls , also known as 3 bears (most likely named after the small, medium and large bears in Goldilocks). You can see these 3 falls from the car, however if you want to take a dip, pull over on the side of the road where you can and then carefully descend the slippery paths down to the pool.

Stop 8- Twin Falls

This is one of the most swimmable waterfalls along the Road to Hana, Twin Falls is a great place to soak up the last bit of the day. Grab some freshly squeezed sugarcane juice, coconut candy, and locally grown fruit at the Twin Falls Farm Stand before heading to the Lower Falls, an easy, short walk from the parking lot. Or if you still have a bit more day light left, opt for the the Upper Falls, a one-mile roundtrip hike through a slippery-but-beautiful trail. 

When you’re ready for some dinner, head for Paia Town and enjoy the beautiful rainbow Eucalyptus trees along the way!

Stop 9- Paia Town

What a day! Now that you’re in the laid back beach town of Paia, you can relax at any of the seaside restaurants for dinner. A few favorites include: the Paia Fish Market , Cafe De Amis and the iconic Mamas Fish House (advance reservations required, but my favorite restaurant in the WORLD).

From the very first days of its existence, the Moscow Metro was the object of civil defense, used as a bomb shelter, and designed as a defense for a possible attack on the Soviet Union.

At a depth of 50 to 120 meters lies the second, the coded system of Metro-2 of Moscow subway, which is equipped with everything you need, from food storage to the nuclear button.

Moscow Metro 2019

Will it be easy to find my way in the Moscow Metro? It is a question many visitors ask themselves before hitting the streets of the Russian capital. As metro is the main means of transport in Moscow – fast, reliable and safe – having some skills in using it will help make your visit more successful and smooth. On top of this, it is the most beautiful metro in the world !

. There are over 220 stations and 15 lines in the Moscow Metro. It is open from 6 am to 1 am. Trains come very frequently: during the rush hour you won't wait for more than 90 seconds! Distances between stations are quite long – 1,5 to 2 or even 3 kilometers. Metro runs inside the city borders only. To get to the airport you will need to take an onground train - Aeroexpress.

RATES AND TICKETS

Paper ticket A fee is fixed and does not depend on how far you go. There are tickets for a number of trips: 1, 2 or 60 trips; or for a number of days: 1, 3 days or a month. Your trips are recorded on a paper ticket. Ifyou buy a ticket for several trips you can share it with your traveling partner passing it from one to the other at the turnstile.

On every station there is cashier and machines (you can switch it to English). Cards and cash are accepted. 1 trip - 55 RUB 2 trips - 110 RUB

Tickets for 60 trips and day passes are available only at the cashier's.

60 rides - 1900 RUB

1 day - 230 RUB 3 days - 438 RUB 30 days - 2170 RUB.

The cheapest way to travel is buying Troyka card . It is a plastic card you can top up for any amount at the machine or at the ticket office. With it every trip costs 38 RUB in the metro and 21 RUB in a bus. You can get the card in any ticket office. Be prepared to leave a deposit of 50 RUB. You can get it back returning the card to the cashier.

SamsungPay, ApplePay and PayPass cards.

One turnstile at every station accept PayPass and payments with phones. It has a sticker with the logos and located next to the security's cabin.

GETTING ORIENTED

At the platfrom you will see one of these signs.

It indicates the line you are at now (line 6), shows the direction train run and the final stations. Numbers below there are of those lines you can change from this line.

In trains, stations are announced in Russian and English. In newer trains there are also visual indication of there you are on the line.

To change lines look for these signs. This one shows the way to line 2.

There are also signs on the platfrom. They will help you to havigate yourself. (To the lines 3 and 5 in this case).
