Oceania Cruises’ Oceania Club loyalty program: The ultimate guide

Gene Sloan

Editor's Note

Staying loyal to Oceania Cruises can really pay off — and it can do so relatively quickly.

Upon reaching just the second tier of the Oceania Club, the line's seven-tier frequent cruiser program, you'll start getting cash back in the form of a $100 onboard spending credit every time you cruise. As you rise through the tiers, the dollar amount you'll receive in a spending credit will also rise — to fabulously generous levels.

Specifically, upon reaching the Silver and Gold tiers of the program, your onboard credit for every cruise will jump to $250 and then $400, respectively; these are significant sums that you can spend on anything from drinks to spa treatments. The next three tiers of the program take the onboard credits even higher, to a maximum of $1,000 per cruise once you reach the President's Circle tier.

For more cruise guides, news and tips, sign up for TPG's cruise newsletter.

These onboard spending credits are at the core of the reward structure for the Oceania Club loyalty program, and they are wonderful in their simplicity. As you rise through the ranks of the program and show Oceania more loyalty, the growing value of the spending credits you receive will give you the means to choose more and more perks while on board Oceania ships.

If you're a wine connoisseur, you can use the credits to buy yourself nice bottles of wine with meals. If you're not a big drinker, you can spend the money on spa treatments. If spa treatments aren't for you, you can use the credit for shore excursions or some other extra-charge item on board.

Still, onboard credits aren't all you'll get by showing Oceania loyalty. Higher tiers of the program also offer such perks as priority disembarkation in ports, complimentary gratuities, credits for spa treatments and invitations to special onboard events.

Additionally, upon reaching each of the top three tiers of the program, members will receive one of the truly spectacular rewards in the cruise loyalty program universe: a free cruise.

Ways to earn points

The currency system of the Oceania Club is the "credit," and the process of earning credits is relatively straightforward. You get one or more credits for every cruise you take based on how long that cruise is.

You will get one credit for a cruise if the sailing is up to 24 days in length. If the cruise is longer than that, you will earn credits according to the following table:

  • Sailings of 25-34 days: 2 credits
  • Sailings of 35-44 days: 3 credits
  • Sailings of 45-54 days: 4 credits
  • Sailings of 55-64 days: 5 credits
  • Sailings of 65-99 days: 7 credits
  • Sailings of 100-157 days: 10 credits
  • Sailings of 158-plus days: 15 credits

In other words, if you take a typical Oceania cruise that is 10 nights long, you will get one credit. But if you sign up for the line's 85-day voyage from Papeete, Tahiti, to Cape Town, South Africa, scheduled for 2025, you'll get seven credits. If you try one of the line's famously long around-the-world sailings, which last 180 days or more, you'll get the maximum of 15 credits for just that one voyage.

Program tiers and benefits

There are seven tiers to the Oceania Club program:

  • Blue (1-4 credits)
  • Bronze (5-9 credits)
  • Silver (10-14 credits)
  • Gold (15-19 credits)
  • Platinum (20-39 credits)
  • Diamond (40-59 credits)
  • President's Circle (60-plus credits)

As is typical for cruise line loyalty programs, the first tier of the Oceania Club program doesn't come with all that many valuable perks.

Blue-level members receive:

  • A membership pin
  • An invitation to an onboard cocktail reception
  • Exclusive member-only offers
  • Advance notice on new itineraries
  • 10% savings on Oceania logo merchandise
  • A subscription to Oceania's magazine, OLife

It isn't until you reach the second tier of the program (Bronze) that you start getting those onboard credits mentioned above. Upon reaching the Bronze tier, you'll get a $100 shipboard credit every time you cruise.

Related: A beginners guide to cruise line loyalty programs

oceania cruises olife ultimate

Additionally, Bronze tier members get a 30% discount on WaveNet internet services, a complimentary bottle of Oceania Club private label wine and a complimentary member cap and tote bag.

Moving up to the Bronze tier is relatively easy. You'll need five credits, which you could earn by taking five relatively short cruises or just a single 55-day voyage on an Oceania ship.

The elite level that makes a difference

In our view, the Silver level is where being a loyal Oceania customer really starts paying off.

Once you reach Silver, you'll get all the above plus an additional $150 shipboard credit (at this point, your onboard credit is now at $250 per cruise). You'll also get complimentary pre-paid gratuities on every cruise you take. The latter perk is a big deal as Oceania has the highest automatic gratuity levies in the business — $18 to $23 per person, per day, depending on your cabin category.

Related: The TPG guide to tipping on cruise ships

Silver status also brings VIP shore excursion check-in. This perk helps you get the most out of every port call since you'll be among the first to disembark.

Other Silver perks include a 10% discount on Oceania Cruises logo merchandise and a 10% discount on the line's Prestige Select beverage packages.

Once you hit the Gold tier, you'll get all that plus an additional $150 in shipboard credit and two complimentary Custom Air Fee Waivers — a $398 value. Now your onboard credit is up to $400 per cruise.

The Gold tier also brings two complimentary $150 Aquamar Spa treatment credits.

Reaching the Silver tier of the Oceania Club program isn't too difficult if you start to become an Oceania regular. You'll need 10 credits, which equates to 10 shorter cruises or, say, two 55-night cruises. If you sign up for one of the line's longer, 100-day-plus sailings, you'll reach the Silver tier in just a single cruise.

Best elite perk

The ultimate perk for Oceania Club loyalty program members comes upon reaching the Platinum tier. Once you hit this level, your very next cruise is free — with some caveats.

The fine print on this perk notes that the free cruise is based on double occupancy, subject to availability at the time of booking; the price also excludes government taxes and fees, so you'll still have to pay for those. The cruise also cannot exceed 14 days in length and cannot be a segment of an around-the-world voyage. Still, that's a pretty great perk, right?

It gets even better. Once you hit the Diamond tier of the Oceania Club program, you get another free cruise. You get a third free cruise when you hit the President's Circle tier.

Related: The best credit cards for booking cruises

oceania cruises olife ultimate

Other perks of the Platinum tier include an additional $100 shipboard credit (at this point, you're up to $500 per cruise in credits), an invitation to a special dinner with officers when you sail and priority check-in at the terminal at the start of your cruise.

Once you reach the Diamond tier, in addition to another free cruise, you will receive all of the above, plus:

  • An additional $250 shipboard credit (for $750 in total)
  • A complimentary wine tasting
  • Two additional $50 Aquamar Spa treatment credits (for a total of $400 in credits)

Additional perks that come with the top President's Circle tier include yet another bump up in onboard credit — to a cool $1,000 per cruise.

President's Circle members also get a complimentary Prestige Select Beverage Package and complimentary laundry service.

Reaching the Platinum level of the Oceania Club program can take a few years if you sail mostly shorter voyages and only cruise a few times a year. You need 20 credits, which equates to 20 shorter cruises. As with the other tiers, you can hit the Platinum relatively quickly if you gravitate to longer sailings.

Oceania is known for some of the longest cruises in the industry, including regular 180-day-plus world sailings that span the globe. Sign up for one of those, and the 15 credits you receive will put you 75% of the way toward Platinum status.

Note that, as is often the case with cruise line loyalty programs, Oceania customers do not have to requalify for status each year. Oceania Club members keep their points at the end of each year and continue to accrue points indefinitely. That means that someone who hits President's Circle status will remain at that top-tier level forever (or until Oceania makes a change to the program).

Such "forever status" is one of the great allures of cruise line frequent cruiser programs. Many airline frequent flyer programs, by contrast, require loyalty members to requalify for status each year.

Bottom line

With its promise of generous onboard spending credits and free cruises upon reaching higher tiers, the Oceania Club is one of the best loyalty programs in the cruise world. It's a particularly alluring program compared to other upscale and relatively small-ship lines. Some small-ship lines don't have any loyalty program at all, or they have only a modest program. Oceania's loyalty program is robust.

Royal Caribbean Cruise Line

What is OLife?

OLife Choice is a program Oceania Cruises offers that provides guests flexibility in choosing from a variety of complimentary amenities when booking a cruise vacation. Choose from three benefits, including free shore excursions, drinks packages, or onboard credit. OLife Choice is available in all categories and on all sailings.

What’s Included in Olife?

OLife Choice includes FREE Internet (one sign-in per stateroom) – PLUS

FREE Shore Excursions based on length of sailing (excluding Oceania Choice, Executive Collection, and Exclusive excursions)

FREE House Select Beverage Package (wine and beer with lunch and dinner)

FREE Shipboard Credit

Can You Combine OLife Choice with Other Programs?

Yes, OLife Choice can be combined with the following programs:

Free Internet

Free Internet amenity does not include streaming and includes one login per stateroom, except Owner’s, Vista & Oceania Suites, which receive two logins per suite. You can purchase the streaming upgrade for $9.99 per day. An additional login will cost $24.99 per day or you can get a 2nd login and enjoy the same access as the Unlimited Internet (Basic) plan, plus an upgrade to video and audio streaming for $34.98 per day.

Shore Excursion Options

When trying to decide if you should take the shore excursion benefit, take a look at the prices of independent tours and do the comparison. With OLife Choice, there will be at least two choices at every port and you’ll be able to choose from excusrions worth up to $199 excluding those excursions in Oceania Select, Oceania Exclusive, Executive Collection, Food & Wine Trails, Wellness Discovery Tours by Aquamar, Go Local, and Culinary Discovery Tours.

House Select Beverage Package

The House Select beverage package includes unlimited champagne, wine and beer with lunch and dinner. So if you’re looking to be able to have a drink whenever you like, you’ll need to upgrade your beverage plan. If the other 2 options are not for you, this may be the best choice as you would only pay $20 per person per day for the upgrade to the Prestige Select plan which is normally $59.95 per person per day.

OLife with Air

Oceania offers OLife with Air as an option to help make your cruise planning less stressful. The roundtrip airfare included with OLife Choice* is guaranteed, no matter how much fares may increase between the day you book your cruise and your travel date.

I recommend doing a cost comparison . Look up the flight pricing individually and then price the difference between OLife with Air and OLife without Air. Depending on your embarkation/debarkation port, you may not find it to be a cost-saving option.

You can also fly in to your embarkation port a few days early or fly out a few days after your cruise using OLife for a deviation fee of $175 per person. I always recommend your get to your embarkation port at least one day before your cruise to avoid any weather or mechanical problems that might cause a delay.

TIP: DO NOT book business/first-class flights with OLife as you will end up paying for both the regular flight AND the business/first-class flight. Always book business class independently.

Included Air Gateways

Other things to note:.

  • Excursions must be booked at least 14 days prior to sailing. Credits will not be offered for non-use of the shore excursion amenity.
  • Each guest in the stateroom must select the same option. For example, both must select the Shipboard Credit.
  • If no decision has been made prior to final payment, the booking will default to the Shipboard Credit amenity.
  • Free Roundtrip Airport Transfer offer is only available when OLife Choice Airfare is purchased through Oceania Cruises.

OLife Ulimate- Worth It?

We just booked Legendary Pathways departing October 21, 2023 and I bought the O Life Ultimate Package and a Concierge Veranda. Ultimate was airfare, transfers, 6 shore excursions. beverage package and 600 shipboard credit. Oceania rep called me and wanted to talk me imto current promotion where I only pick one of the "perks"- beverage, 600 credit or shore excursions.  Difference would be $2000 a person cheaper. Said that beverage pacakge was just beer and wine and not mixed drinks. Is it worth it to go with the cheaper package?

Did you book a cruise on the Extraordinary Savings Sale list or on the Ultimate O Life list?

The savings on the former is cash in your pocket while the savings on the latter is non-refundable stuff.

Only you can tell if your projected use of the non-refundable stuff would have more than $2000 cash value.

Do the math.

I just went through something similar and for us it made much more sense to go with OLife Choice and the $600 OBC.

- The OLife drinks package is just Beer and Wine but also only at lunch and dinner. I drink spirits and always after dinner, so I would have to

upgrade at $30 per day to the full package.

- My wife doesn’t drink so there would be no value in the included drinks on her side.

- Our itinerary stops are mostly just self explore type destinations. I priced up some independent tours and it ultimately works out better.

Olife Ultimate would have been $2,400 more however I would have needed pay an additional $360 for the drinks upgrade. Taking the Choice option with $600 OBC just leaves us with $840 additional for the Prestige drinks package for one. In theory $1,560 cash saving for tours which we won’t come near to spending.

Thanks all.

Actually you would have been better off just with cruise only. The OBC option is a dollar for dollar trade of real money for non refundable OBC. I don't know if you're getting air or not, but the air is not tied to getting Olife. This is part of the confusion on Oceania's marketing.

Does your $2000 a person cheaper still include air and transfers? And yes, the beverage package is just beer and wine with lunch and dinner, or when ordering room service.

There is one very rare occasion when the O Life SBC has some minimal value (though it is always dollar for dollar with what you paid for it in the fare. And that occasion would be when it’s a better value to use the tours “passport collection” rather than the YWYW package as an add on to the O Life tours option.

@Flatbush Flyer

No air and the OLife choice was part of the extraordinary savings deal, so there was no cheaper cruise only deal.

The $600 is getting spent on board one way or another with the drinks package and gratuities still owed.

You are paying for the non refundable OBC  you could just skip the  O Life perk & pay as you drink or buy the Prestige package

Do the math  & see what works for you

Can someone clarify.  I thought the OLife ultimate was all three free instead of just one.  Is there a price difference? If so why?  If so I'll have to go back and check the cruise I just booked.  Perhaps the latest current promotion dropped the two extra perks and reduced the fare.  If so I guess I need to revisit my booking.

I am buying the prestige package.

Olife Choice was an included perk so there is no further cash discount by not taking it. Even if they did give $600 off the cruise I’m going to be paying that straight back to them and more with the gratuities and prestige package so it being non refundable doesn’t matter.

When it’s available, Ultimate is all 3 perks for the same prices as regular O Life (one perk). But, there are occasions when you can’t “double dip” (e.g., BoB discount plus Ultimate O Life, etc).

Thanks I thought I missed something when the OP said they saved $2000 by not booking O Life ultimate.   Yes I couldn't combine BoB but I saved more with O Life Ultimate as we'll use the excursion credits and $800 OBC.   The drinks at dinner and lunch are a minor add for us.

Per the O Extraordinary Savings Sale , you can book a Veranda cabin for that cruise for just $1799 PP. That is a HUGE real $ saving off the price. All that OLife material is just pennies on the dollar. Since YOU can bring your own alcohol on board, book your own excursions and do your own airfare. BUT only you know what math works for you.

The ESS worked perfectly for us, so I used it for both our Adriatic & Aegean Wonders and Italian Artistry  & Turkish Icons cruises on  Riviera (10/30-11/19). On the former, went from an inside F to an A3 for essentially the same price ($1899 PP) since it includes $300 SBC which will pay my gratuities.

See the attached pic of two example voyages (in the “extra…..” brochure - one without the “extra…” and one with the “extra…..” For both, you can do “cruise only” at a lower price.

And note that, with the “extra…..”  one (on the right), “O Life” gets you only $600/cabin SBC while “cruise only” gets you a cheaper price that is $800 pp lower (i.e., $1000 net savings/cabin).

“Cruise only” bottom line is an extra $400 purchasing power on board or $ back in your pocket.

Always do the math.

We had a cruise already booked when the Ultimate OLife offer was announced.  The difference in the fare was $600 but added $800 in OBC.  No brainer for me, our TA had the Ultimate package added with no other changes to our original booking.  It all depends on each individual situation.

Sthrngary

Well all of this is clear as mud to someone just now considering Oceania Cruises for the first time.  If is a first time for me as well however I studied O a few years ago, booked it and it got cancelled due to Covid.  I am back booked for November 2023.

When I tell everyone on this blog that O is kind of confusing to new folks like myself, I am really not kidding.  Yet it would be of great value to new bookings and new O guests to read and learn as much as possible on the different plans.  I am by no means an expert on O.  I do like to know what I am buying and if their is a way to make the entire situation less of an investment without taking away value.

  • OLife: This was my first lesson.  Choose one of three perks.  Were every other cruise brand I have used provided a full adult drink package, O was beer/wine at lunch/dinner.  Some of the blogs on this were pro/con like everything else on a cruise.  The debate of which perk was the best value were all fun to read.  My decision was $600.00 of onboard credit which I used pre-cruise to purchase the full Adult Drink package called the Prestige Drink Package which was $600 per guest, spirits, wine and beer when ever a bar/restaurant was open.  It also gave discounts on some of the unique dinning opportunities. I paid another $600 for the second guest.  Was this a deal or a value, not really.  About a wash.
  • OLife Ultimate:  I was literally upset when I say this on my cruise, until I went back to the fare I got originally and realized my initial fare was fair less.  In doing a math competition, it seems adding the other two perks, raised the fare about what you would expect.  All that went through my mind was, the Marketing Department strikes again.
  • O Air:  Oh boy was this one debated on this and other social media site.  There are advocates to both.  There are some contributors on this blog for O that are literal experts. I am not.  I am just old and set in my ways.  I thought I knew lots about airfare until I met the experts.  What I did know was to do my best to book my flights directly with the air brand, fully refundable if possible, as early as possible to get the best itinerary and price.  If the fare went down, cancel and rebook since it was fully refundable.  Kind of like with fully refundable cares fare deposits.  For me, not everyone, my strategy worked very well.  By booking directly with the Air Brand, my Cruise Fare was $1,000.00 less per guest which was very close to what I paid.
  • Cruise Only:  Oh boy was this confusing at first.  In my past, cruise only simply meant no air.  With Oceania it meant no OLife and no Air.  I figured it out simply by doing the math.  One perk was worth about $600.  The air credit was $1000.  Take those off and my fare was that much less.  Many say this is the way to go for them.  That is cool.  However just knowing how it seems to work is enough for most of us newbies to make a decent business decision.
  • Extraordinary Saving Sale: I again did the math however it seems that the PH3 I choose really was not an Extraordinary Saving for my situation.  The lower categories seems to be a very good deal for some.  O marketing needed to sell more cabins and did so by making the lower categories very attractive.  Since everyone when they leave their stateroom are treated the same on an O voyage, if I was booking again, I would definitely consider this.
  • Four Category Upgrades: The labor day sale was a four category upgrade.  That is when I booked.  Since then all kinds of marketing and promotion has happened including price increases.  When I do the math, I look at my category of PH3 and see where we would be for each promotion. Your situation may differ.

Now this is my experience currently.  As I stated, it was a bit confusing at first.  I kept asking the previous O guest questions to get to this point.  I hope my experience thought this learning curve helps some.

Cruise well and enjoy every moment.

Thanks however that isn't my cruise or pricing. The price from one agent quoting without OLife in the promo was $600 cheaper, so no difference. Notice the fine print in the image states that the Cruise Only fair 'does not include airfare' which suggests the other prices do and explains the ' $80 0 pp' difference. We had the air credit applied to the price as we don't need it, so we are paying cruise-only price + Olife Choice of AMENITIES (not flights) as a perk. Automatic gratuities are going to be $432 and drinks will $840, so the $600 OBC being non-refundable really doesn't matter, its very literally already gone.

Excellent point! I hadn’t thought about the air since we would never use O air - particularly for bizclass.

Enjoy your cruise!

Did you get your answer?

I would take the $4000/cabin discount which let's you choose how it's spent. If you want the OLife shorex or drink package, go ahead and add regular OLife. That's me though.

Here are the numbers to run for Ultimate O-Life...OLife shorex can get you shorex up to ~$200, but the $199 shorex are not common and they need to be something you actually want to do, so let's call that a $170/shorex value (6*$170=$1020); House drink package gets you wine and beer with lunch and dinner worth $40/person/day (11*$80=$880); You are paying $600 for Ultimate (or regular) OLife so the OBC is a wash. With Ultimate Olife you get added value (assuming these are things you'd buy anyway) of $1020+$880 = $1900/cabin...HALF of the $4000 savings. I would take that $4000. You can use it to buy regular Olife (and choose shorex or House drink package), or you can purchase higher cost shorex using the YWC 25% discount if you buy the minimum number (likely 4or5 per person for this itinerary...it's in your shorex pdf info), or purchase the higher-level drink package (or upgrade if you choose OLife drink pkg), or buy things not related to O....etc.

Hope this gets you started on doing the math 🙂 Someone please check mine.

We went with whatever the sale thing is with airfare and one choice. I picked the excursions- but might change that to OBC. Will spend $199 to pick our own flights- now just decking how long we want to stay pre and post cruise.

The shorex choice is "worth more" but only if you want to take the shorex that qualify for OLife. Use my "N/A in the Ultimate column" rule of thumb to browse online...if you find 3 per person that you like and they total more than $300/person, then shorex is a better fiscal choice. The shorex pdf may have additional shorex not showing online (I've never experienced this, but FlatbushFlyer has and only fools argue with FF 😉 ).

Haha

marion10:  Do you know that Oceania now allows three days at the front or back end of your cruise when using their air, not including the day you leave, without paying the air deviation fee of $199.  Keep in mind though, you do have to accept what they offer if you are not paying the deviation fee.

Cruising the Moskva River: A short guide to boat trips in Russia’s capital

oceania cruises olife ultimate

There’s hardly a better way to absorb Moscow’s atmosphere than on a ship sailing up and down the Moskva River. While complicated ticketing, loud music and chilling winds might dampen the anticipated fun, this checklist will help you to enjoy the scenic views and not fall into common tourist traps.

How to find the right boat?

There are plenty of boats and selecting the right one might be challenging. The size of the boat should be your main criteria.

Plenty of small boats cruise the Moskva River, and the most vivid one is this yellow Lay’s-branded boat. Everyone who has ever visited Moscow probably has seen it.

oceania cruises olife ultimate

This option might leave a passenger disembarking partially deaf as the merciless Russian pop music blasts onboard. A free spirit, however, will find partying on such a vessel to be an unforgettable and authentic experience that’s almost a metaphor for life in modern Russia: too loud, and sometimes too welcoming. Tickets start at $13 (800 rubles) per person.

Bigger boats offer smoother sailing and tend to attract foreign visitors because of their distinct Soviet aura. Indeed, many of the older vessels must have seen better days. They are still afloat, however, and getting aboard is a unique ‘cultural’ experience. Sometimes the crew might offer lunch or dinner to passengers, but this option must be purchased with the ticket. Here is one such  option  offering dinner for $24 (1,490 rubles).

oceania cruises olife ultimate

If you want to travel in style, consider Flotilla Radisson. These large, modern vessels are quite posh, with a cozy restaurant and an attentive crew at your service. Even though the selection of wines and food is modest, these vessels are still much better than other boats.

oceania cruises olife ultimate

Surprisingly, the luxurious boats are priced rather modestly, and a single ticket goes for $17-$32 (1,100-2,000 rubles); also expect a reasonable restaurant bill on top.

How to buy tickets?

Women holding photos of ships promise huge discounts to “the young and beautiful,” and give personal invitations for river tours. They sound and look nice, but there’s a small catch: their ticket prices are usually more than those purchased online.

“We bought tickets from street hawkers for 900 rubles each, only to later discover that the other passengers bought their tickets twice as cheap!”  wrote  (in Russian) a disappointed Rostislav on a travel company website.

Nevertheless, buying from street hawkers has one considerable advantage: they personally escort you to the vessel so that you don’t waste time looking for the boat on your own.

oceania cruises olife ultimate

Prices start at $13 (800 rubles) for one ride, and for an additional $6.5 (400 rubles) you can purchase an unlimited number of tours on the same boat on any given day.

Flotilla Radisson has official ticket offices at Gorky Park and Hotel Ukraine, but they’re often sold out.

Buying online is an option that might save some cash. Websites such as  this   offer considerable discounts for tickets sold online. On a busy Friday night an online purchase might be the only chance to get a ticket on a Flotilla Radisson boat.

This  website  (in Russian) offers multiple options for short river cruises in and around the city center, including offbeat options such as ‘disco cruises’ and ‘children cruises.’ This other  website  sells tickets online, but doesn’t have an English version. The interface is intuitive, however.

Buying tickets online has its bad points, however. The most common is confusing which pier you should go to and missing your river tour.

oceania cruises olife ultimate

“I once bought tickets online to save with the discount that the website offered,” said Igor Shvarkin from Moscow. “The pier was initially marked as ‘Park Kultury,’ but when I arrived it wasn’t easy to find my boat because there were too many there. My guests had to walk a considerable distance before I finally found the vessel that accepted my tickets purchased online,” said the man.

There are two main boarding piers in the city center:  Hotel Ukraine  and  Park Kultury . Always take note of your particular berth when buying tickets online.

Where to sit onboard?

Even on a warm day, the headwind might be chilly for passengers on deck. Make sure you have warm clothes, or that the crew has blankets ready upon request.

The glass-encased hold makes the tour much more comfortable, but not at the expense of having an enjoyable experience.

oceania cruises olife ultimate

Getting off the boat requires preparation as well. Ideally, you should be able to disembark on any pier along the way. In reality, passengers never know where the boat’s captain will make the next stop. Street hawkers often tell passengers in advance where they’ll be able to disembark. If you buy tickets online then you’ll have to research it yourself.

There’s a chance that the captain won’t make any stops at all and will take you back to where the tour began, which is the case with Flotilla Radisson. The safest option is to automatically expect that you’ll return to the pier where you started.

In most cases, you'll be entering Red Square from the north, passing landmarks such as the Bolshoi Theatre and Duma parliament building as you make your way southward. Although you don't necessarily have to pass through the Voskresensky (or Resurrection in English) Gates in order to gain access to the square these days, they definitely provide a sense of arrival, to say nothing of the way their left arch frame's St. Basil's Cathedral if you look from just the right angle.

An interesting fact is that while a gate of some kind has stood here since the mid-16th century, the one you currently see wasn't built until 1994, having been destroyed in 1931 so that tanks could enter and exit Red Square during military parades.

St. Basil's Cathedral

TripSavvy / Christopher Larson

Few sights are as iconic not only of Moscow and Red Square but indeed of Russia than St. Basil's Cathedral, whose colorful, onion-shaped domes are a symbol of the country around the world. Officially known as the Cathedral of Vasily the Blessed, this church has stood since 1561, which is quite miraculous when you consider all the turbulent history that has transpired since then.

Among other things, religion was severely prohibited during the Soviet period , which led some to believe that this emblem of the Russian Orthodox church might not withstand the tenure of the USSR.

An interesting fact is that St. Basil's is the so-called "Kilometer Zero" of Russia; all of Moscow's main roads (which can take you anywhere in Russia) begin at the exits to Red Square. In this way, St. Basil's iconic status also has an extremely tangible element.

The Kremlin

TripSavvy / Christopher Larson

When you think of The Kremlin, it's unlikely that positive images enter your mind. The fact that simply saying the word "Kremlin" is too vague a descriptor (most Russian cities have their own Kremlin complexes; you should say "Moscow Kremlin") notwithstanding, this misunderstood place is incredibly beautiful, even if you don't like the policy that comes out of it.

Senate Square

In spite of its name, which refers to the role the building that rises above the square played during Imperial Russia, Senate Square is actually home to Russia's presidential administration, currently helmed by Vladimir Putin. In order to see where Russia's legislature operates from, walk just outside Red Square to the Duma parliament building.

Dormition Cathedral

Dating back to the year 1479, the gold-domed Dormition Cathedral pays homage to an Orthodox religious feast that commemorates the death of the Virgin Mary . As is the case with St. Basil's, it is curious that such a conspicuously religious structure was able to survive through the Soviet period.

Armoury Chamber

Though it takes its name from the fact that it housed Russia's royal arsenal when it was built in the 16th century, the most notable resident of the Kremlin's Armoury Chamber today is the Russian Diamond Fund.

Notable Kremlin Towers

Robert Schrader

The interior of the Moscow Kremlin is more beautiful and inviting than you'd expect, but the walls and towers that rise around it better live up to the intimidation with which the complex is associated.

Borovitskaya Tower

Named to commemorate the dense forest that once stood atop the mount where it's built, this tower is extremely picturesque. Built in the late 15th century, it's visible from most places in the square, and also as you walk along the Moskva River.

Nikolskaya Tower

Also built in the year 1491, this tower currently suffered destruction at the hands of Napoleon's army in the 19th century. What you see now is the result of an 1816 re-design and renovation, though artillery fire during the Russian Revolution also caused superficial damage to the tower, named to honor St. Nikolas of Mozhaysk , so it's difficult to know which elements of it are original.

Spasskaya Tower

Known in English as the "Savior's Tower," this iconic, star-topped tower is perhaps the best-known of all the Kremlin's towers. Built in 1491 like the other two towers on this list, it's certainly the most photographed. As a result of its proximity to St. Basil's, it often makes its way into tourists' pictures.

Mausoleum of Lenin

Just as it's strange to learn how many religious monuments survived through the Soviet period, it's a bit odd to think that Lenin's preserved body still sits in a mausoleum just beneath the walls of the Kremlin on Red Square, given the lack of consensus about the ultimate impact of his Revolution, even in Russia.

It's not guaranteed that you'll be able to see the body (which, believe it or not, seems to be improving with age ) when you go, and if you do you will likely have to wait in line, but even strolling past the outside of the Lenin Mausoleum, flanked by stone-faced guards that almost look like statues, illuminates the gravity of his body still being here.

GUM Shopping Center

You might cringe, at least initially, when you realize that one of the most iconic stops on a tour of Red Square is a department store—until you see said department store, that is. Built in 1893 and known during Soviet times as the State Department Store, GUM  ( Glávnyj Universáľnyj Magazín or Main Universal Store in English) hearkens back to the grandeur of the late 19th century, both seen from the outside (especially, when lit up at night) and the interior, which might have you feeling like you're further west in Europe.

A trip inside GUM is a particularly good idea during winter, when frigid temperatures outside will have you savoring the heat, the quality of souvenirs, confections and other goods sold inside notwithstanding. Also, make sure not to confuse GUM with CDM, which sits near the Bolshoi Theatre, even though both are stunning and iconic in their own right.

State Historical Museum

The Russian State Historical Museum is located near Voskresensky Gates, though you should wait until after you've seen the first few attractions of Red Square and the Kremlin to head back there and go inside. To be sure, as you pass by its facade (whose late-19th century grandeur somewhat obscures that fact that it's currently a museum accessible to the public) you might not even think to try and gain entry.

Once inside the museum, you can plan to spend at least a couple of hours, given that artifacts here date back to the very beginning of the Russian state in the ninth century. As is the case with GUM, this will be a particularly alluring prospect if you visit in winter, when Moscow is arguably at its most beautiful, but certainly at its least tolerable.

Minin-Pozharsky Monument

It's somewhat easy to disregard this monument, which pays homage to the two Russian princes who ended the so-called "Time of Troubles" in the mid-16th century, during which Polish-Lithuanian forces occupied Russia, among other awful things including a famine. That's because the statue currently sits just at the base of St. Basil's Cathedral, which makes it very difficult to photograph or even see without being overwhelmed by that much more famous edifice.

Though the statue originally sat at the very center of Red Square, it came to be an obstacle to the movement of tanks during the Soviet period, much like the Voskresensky Gates. As a result, authorities moved it during that time, and it's stayed where you currently find it ever since.

Kazan Cathedral

Taken by itself, the smokey-pink Kazan Cathedral is an architectural marvel; originally built in the 17th century, the church you find here today, located just north of the GUM department store, dates back only to 1993.

Unfortunately, since it sits not only in the shadow of GUM, but also in the shadow St. Basil's and the Towers of the Kremlin, it's easy to miss entirely if you aren't looking. As a result, you might wait until you've seen just about everything else in Red Square before coming here to take photos, and to appreciate the understated beauty of this oft-overlooked cathedral.

Moskva River

As you head south from St. Basil's Cathedral to exit Red Square, make sure to walk onto Bolshoy Moskvoretskiy Bridge, which crosses the Moskva River. If you look due north, you can get an excellent shot of the church framed, on the left, by the towers of the Kremlin. Directing your gaze a bit to the west allows you to see the skyscrapers of Moscow City as they rise above the Kremlin's walls.

Walking westward along the riverbank is also a worthwhile excursion, for the views it provides of Red Square and the Kremlin, as well as the fact that doing so takes you to other iconic Moscow attractions, including Gorky Park and the Pushkin Museum. The views you enjoy from the river and the bridge are particularly stunning at night, though you should make sure you bring a tripod if you want to get a clear picture, given how strong winds over and near the river can be.
