Discover Cooktown’s colourful history today. Join our guide on a tour of the Cooktown Cemetery and hear the intriguing story of a fair skinned woman known as the “Normanby Woman” who was sighted living with Aborigines back in the 1800s. Visit James Cook Museum in the magnificent 19th Century Sisters of Mercy Convent.  Gain an insight into the grounding of the Endeavour and the most significant land based stay of Captain Cook’s east coast expedition. Wander the beautiful heritage-listed Cooktown Botanic Gardens and see the Vera Scarth-Johnson collection of original regional botanical illustrations. Enjoy some free time to stroll downtown Cooktown and a late afternoon tour of Grassy Hill with 360-degree views of Cooktown, the Endeavour River and the Great Barrier Reef.

Accommodation: Sovereign Resort or River of Gold Motel, Cooktown

Travel to Lakeland and Laura via the mysterious Black Mountains, a special story place for the Kuku Yalanji people. World-class Aboriginal rock art and wonderful locally grown coffee are two big drawcards for these small towns.    Best known are the Quinkan Rock Art Galleries, considered to be some of the most significant Aboriginal art sites in the world. We’ll join an Indigenous guided tour of the Split Rock Galleries.

Travel along the Peninsula Developmental Road to the Hann River Roadhouse for a short break before continuing on to Musgrave Roadhouse.

Accommodation: Musgrave Roadhouse

We continue along the Peninsula Development Road to the old mining community of Coen.    The town was originally created around a repeater station in the Overland Telegraph Line to the Tip of Cape York Peninsula.

We’ll arrive in time for lunch at the Archer River Roadhouse.    Located on the banks of the crystal clear Archer River, the Roadhouse is famous for the massive Archer Burger, best served with an icy cold drink under their shaded patio.

Last stop for the day is Weipa, the Barramundi capital of Queensland. Originally an Aboriginal mission, Weipa grew to become a township after the discovery of bauxite. Late afternoon relax at your accommodation with sweeping views of Albatross Bay.

Learn about Weipa’s mining operations on a morning tour of the world’s largest bauxite mine, operated by Rio Tinto. Witness a stunning sunset in one of the few places in Queensland where the sun sets over the ocean in the west.

Accommodation: Heritage Resort or Albatross Bay Resort, Weipa

Part of the historic Overland Telegraph Line, Moreton Telegraph Station was completed in 1887 and ceased operations in 1987 with the introduction of microwave telecommunications. Spot giant termite mounds as the country changes to the open plains of Heathlands Resources Reserve.

Cool off in the lush Fruit Bat Falls with its crystal clear water (croc free), a perfect swimming spot and one of the most special places on the Cape. This was an 11-day tour from Cairns to the Tip of Australia, with a flight back to Cairns from Horn Island. Kathy and Brett were fantastic tour guides full of stories and information from having lived in the Cape for over 3 years and visited it many other times. When a scheduled visit wasn’t possible because a facility was closed for some reason, they had a substitute available eg Finch Beach and Red Beach. We saw so much, learnt so much, laughed so much, and ate so much!! Highlights were the Daintree, Cooktown, Weipa, the Tip, and the Torres Strait Islands. But every day was enjoyable. Highly recommended! Geoff

Could not fault – itinerary – 4WD vehicle – accommodation – guide & driver – all-inclusive cost – interesting destinations. Good value for money. Great to support an Australian enterprise. Would highly recommend it to anyone. Lorraine

Fabulous! Cathy and Brett were amazing, knew the area like the back of their hands. They were alert to everything making the time wonderful and easy. The two-night stops were good, the food great, and the beds comfy and clean. The tour means you do not need to spend any money from start to finish unless you want a beer, and to buy cards and caps, etc. The tour was informative, educational, entertaining, and highly recommended. Elizabeth

In most towns you will get phone service, but there are large stretches between towns that may not have service. Satellite phones are carried on tours for emergency use. Phone service will be possible in Cairns, Laura, Seisia, Roko Island, Thursday Island, Horn Island, Weipa, Cooktown and Coen. There may be other locations and all service will depend on the phone carrier used.

Where else but Cape York can you stand on the tip of Australia, discover one of the world’s oldest rainforests in the world and travel on roads few even dare to tread? Just because Australia’s last frontier is calling, doesn’t mean you need to travel it alone.

For the adventure of a lifetime, without any of the ‘going solo’ stress, join one of these guided Cape York tours.

The tip of Australia, Cape York, needs very little introduction for those who live and breathe rugged adventure. It’s big, it’s wild and it’s ripe for exploring – but it also needs serious preparation if you’re thinking of driving it solo. While it’s long been said a sense of adventure is the best packing essential for the northern neck of Australia, if you opt for an all-inclusive guided tour, aside from your clothes, there’s actually not that much more to take.

Save the hours of detailed planning, itinerary coordinating, and stress of driving and let a Cape York tour take care of the rest. All that’s left to do is sit back and watch the landscape ebb and flow between cattle stations, World Heritage-listed rainforest, wetlands, towering termite mounds and pristine beaches to name a few.

Fruit Bat Falls Cape York

Fruit Bat Falls, Apudthama National Park (Jardine River)

Explore the natural colour contrasts of Cape York with Cockatours , who lead a 15-day camping and 4WD expedition to the tip. Compliance status

We firmly believe that the internet should be available and accessible to anyone, and are committed to providing a website that is accessible to the widest possible audience, regardless of circumstance and ability.

To fulfill this, we aim to adhere as strictly as possible to the World Wide Web Consortium’s (W3C) Web Content Accessibility Guidelines 2.1 (WCAG 2.1) at the AA level. These guidelines explain how to make web content accessible to people with a wide array of disabilities. Complying with those guidelines helps us ensure that the website is accessible to all people: blind people, people with motor impairments, visual impairment, cognitive disabilities, and more.

This website utilizes various technologies that are meant to make it as accessible as possible at all times. We utilize an accessibility interface that allows persons with specific disabilities to adjust the website’s UI (user interface) and design it to their personal needs.

Additionally, the website utilizes an AI-based application that runs in the background and optimizes its accessibility level constantly. This application remediates the website’s HTML, adapts Its functionality and behavior for screen-readers used by the blind users, and for keyboard functions used by individuals with motor impairments.

If you’ve found a malfunction or have ideas for improvement, we’ll be happy to hear from you. You can reach out to the website’s operators by using the following email

Screen-reader and keyboard navigation

Our website implements the ARIA attributes (Accessible Rich Internet Applications) technique, alongside various different behavioral changes, to ensure blind users visiting with screen-readers are able to read, comprehend, and enjoy the website’s functions. As soon as a user with a screen-reader enters your site, they immediately receive a prompt to enter the Screen-Reader Profile so they can browse and operate your site effectively. Here’s how our website covers some of the most important screen-reader requirements, alongside console screenshots of code examples:

Screen-reader optimization: we run a background process that learns the website’s components from top to bottom, to ensure ongoing compliance even when updating the website. In this process, we provide screen-readers with meaningful data using the ARIA set of attributes. For example, we provide accurate form labels; descriptions for actionable icons (social media icons, search icons, cart icons, etc.); validation guidance for form inputs; element roles such as buttons, menus, modal dialogues (popups), and others. Additionally, the background process scans all the website’s images and provides an accurate and meaningful image-object-recognition-based description as an ALT (alternate text) tag for images that are not described. It will also extract texts that are embedded within the image, using an OCR (optical character recognition) technology. To turn on screen-reader adjustments at any time, users need only to press the Alt+1 keyboard combination. Screen-reader users also get automatic announcements to turn the Screen-reader mode on as soon as they enter the website.

These adjustments are compatible with all popular screen readers, including JAWS and NVDA.

Keyboard navigation optimization: The background process also adjusts the website’s HTML, and adds various behaviors using JavaScript code to make the website operable by the keyboard. This includes the ability to navigate the website using the Tab and Shift+Tab keys, operate dropdowns with the arrow keys, close them with Esc, trigger buttons and links using the Enter key, navigate between radio and checkbox elements using the arrow keys, and fill them in with the Spacebar or Enter key.Additionally, keyboard users will find quick-navigation and content-skip menus, available at any time by clicking Alt+1, or as the first elements of the site while navigating with the keyboard. The background process also handles triggered popups by moving the keyboard focus towards them as soon as they appear, and not allow the focus drift outside it.

Users can also use shortcuts such as “M” (menus), “H” (headings), “F” (forms), “B” (buttons), and “G” (graphics) to jump to specific elements.

Disability profiles supported in our website

  • Epilepsy Safe Mode: this profile enables people with epilepsy to use the website safely by eliminating the risk of seizures that result from flashing or blinking animations and risky color combinations.
  • Visually Impaired Mode: this mode adjusts the website for the convenience of users with visual impairments such as Degrading Eyesight, Tunnel Vision, Cataract, Glaucoma, and others.
  • Cognitive Disability Mode: this mode provides different assistive options to help users with cognitive impairments such as Dyslexia, Autism, CVA, and others, to focus on the essential elements of the website more easily.
  • ADHD Friendly Mode: this mode helps users with ADHD and Neurodevelopmental disorders to read, browse, and focus on the main website elements more easily while significantly reducing distractions.
  • Blindness Mode: this mode configures the website to be compatible with screen-readers such as JAWS, NVDA, VoiceOver, and TalkBack. A screen-reader is software for blind users that is installed on a computer and smartphone, and websites must be compatible with it.
  • Keyboard Navigation Profile (Motor-Impaired): this profile enables motor-impaired persons to operate the website using the keyboard Tab, Shift+Tab, and the Enter keys. Users can also use shortcuts such as “M” (menus), “H” (headings), “F” (forms), “B” (buttons), and “G” (graphics) to jump to specific elements.

Additional UI, design, and readability adjustments

  • Font adjustments – users, can increase and decrease its size, change its family (type), adjust the spacing, alignment, line height, and more.
  • Color adjustments – users can select various color contrast profiles such as light, dark, inverted, and monochrome. Additionally, users can swap color schemes of titles, texts, and backgrounds, with over seven different coloring options.
  • Animations – person with epilepsy can stop all running animations with the click of a button. Animations controlled by the interface include videos, GIFs, and CSS flashing transitions.
  • Content highlighting – users can choose to emphasize important elements such as links and titles. They can also choose to highlight focused or hovered elements only.
  • Audio muting – users with hearing devices may experience headaches or other issues due to automatic audio playing. This option lets users mute the entire website instantly.
  • Cognitive disorders – we utilize a search engine that is linked to Wikipedia and Wiktionary, allowing people with cognitive disorders to decipher meanings of phrases, initials, slang, and others.
  • Additional functions – we provide users the option to change cursor color and size, use a printing mode, enable a virtual keyboard, and many other functions.

Browser and assistive technology compatibility

We aim to support the widest array of browsers and assistive technologies as possible, so our users can choose the best fitting tools for them, with as few limitations as possible. Therefore, we have worked very hard to be able to support all major systems that comprise over 95% of the user market share including Google Chrome, Mozilla Firefox, Apple Safari, Opera and Microsoft Edge, JAWS and NVDA (screen readers).

Notes, comments, and feedback

Despite our very best efforts to allow anybody to adjust the website to their needs. There may still be pages or sections that are not fully accessible, are in the process of becoming accessible, or are lacking an adequate technological solution to make them accessible. Still, we are continually improving our accessibility, adding, updating and improving its options and features, and developing and adopting new technologies. All this is meant to reach the optimal level of accessibility, following technological advancements. For any assistance, please reach out to

Heritage - Cape York Tour

In August 2017 we took the eight day accommodated tour to Cape York. Our tour guide "Mark" was fantastic, he was very informative, very good driver, who helped make the trip a fun experience. The highlights were seeing crocs, going to the tip, having an overnight station stay. Accommodation was basic but fine, all meals were good. A reasonable amount of fitness is required as everyone helps with breakfast/lunch, set-up/pack-up and unloading bags. We were lucky to have a good mix of people from all over Australia. Wonderful experience, great job Mark.

What can I say. Absolutely fantastic. We had a ball and would happily do it again tomorrow. The group we had were awesome and our guide John, well what can I say. He was brilliant, so full of information on everything he took us to. More than happy to help everyone out in all situations and was also good for a laugh throughout the whole trip. I can honestly say that we would recommend Tagalong Tours to anyone who is interested in this sort of adventure. They'll take you to places that you wouldn't think of going and show you Australian historical places that you never knew were there. We're planning to get together with some of the group in two years to the Trans Continental trip. Can't wait. Thanks again to John and Paul for a great time. Get out there and do it guys, you won't regret it!

I paid a deposit of $1500 for the Sydney - Cape York - Darwin tour with Heron Airlines, but when I received my itinerary in March 2017, I had been booked on the wrong tour. I rang John Ives immediately and was told my tour was fully booked and I would have to be booked on another date, this was not suitable for me. He did at first promise a refund, but later said 'I can't do that!' It has been nearly one year and no replies from him. DO NOT MAKE BOOKINGS WITH THIS BUSINESS OR JOHN IVES TRADING AS ANY BUSINESS.

Having been prevented by ill health from making a road trip to Cape York we noted in RACV magazine there was day trip there from Cairns on arrival in Cairns we made enquiry with concierge At the Pullman hotel who arranged our trip. We left the Cairns airport around 8 am after a briefing on the days affairs. The trip up consisted of a low level flight which enabled us to take photos of places, the reef islands the large expanse of sand dunes and other notable locations explained to,us by the pilot. Even looking for crocodiles along the beaches. We landed at the airport and toured the aboriginal settlements in a van driven by one of the local aborigines. The main one being Bamaga. We then went to see a ship being unloaded in the port the main means of provisioning for the area. Headed out to Frangapani beach where we were served a very comprehensive lunch by our pilot and then headed out on foot to the tip of Cape York Returning to the airport we boarded the twin engine plane for our return two and a half hour flight back to Cairns at an altitude this time of 12500 ft An extremely enjoyable day was had by the 11 people on board A great way to see that part of our country Coachksb

In one word.....WOW. We decided on doing a Cape York 4WD tour with Tagalong Tours Australia over a year ago. We booked with Paul of Tagalong Tours and spent the next 12 months reviewing the maps he sent us, researching 4wd hire places and generally getting ready for the tour of a lifetime. Paul could not have been more helpful. I bombarded him with questions from "which 4WD should I rent" to " what is the night time temperature"- all of which he was absolutely delighted to answer. He pointed me to the right 4WD drive place that he felt would provide me with a vehicle for the trip and everything I would need for our 21 day life in the bush (we extended our trip). On the first day we met the group of 10 cars at the cableway parking, had a quick briefing with John (our tour guide) on got going. John and his wife Trish were our hosts for the tour (although this was Trish's first time). I shouldn't say hosts because we became a big family. John guided us through the entire trip taking us to places we would have just driven past and telling us the history of the places we visited on the way - from deserted goldmines to abandoned towns. Then we hit the Old Telegraph Track. what a learning experience. John helped us over the creeks, up dirt mountains ( they felt like that with the angle we were at) and through rivers. Words can't explain the time we had. At the end of the day we were exhausted and sat around the fire chatting about the day and learning from John how to do things. Coming from all walks of life everybody had something to offer and all were happy to chip in and help the rest of us learn something new. So 19 new friends were made along the way. 48 tyres went over 3000km and not one tyre blew or needed repairing. How good was that?? . This is a trip you HAVE to do and one that should be done with an experienced guide/company. I would choose John to take me anywhere. In fact I am already working on the Simpson desert crossing with Tagalong and John next year. Is that recommendation enough that these are the right guys to go with? Enough said JUST GO AND DO IT

Having travelled with Heron on 3 occasions I had no reason to be concerned even after June 10 trip was cancelled due to aircraft maintenance issue with 12 days notice. The rescheduled July 21 trip was cancelled with 2 days notice. Promised refund of $6500 has not been received.John Ives not responding to call, emails or sms. Very disappointed - was so looking forward to visiting Cape York. The Heron deregistration proposed on May 9 has occurred. Aviation Tours still registered according to ASIC. Will update if I receive refund.

Heritage Tours to Cape York

We spent 7 days on this tour in August 2016. We were driven from Cairns to Seisia over 5 days and flew back to Cairns from Horn Island on day 7. The transport was a small bus, seating 23 passengers. Except for we two Kiwis, everyone else was Australian. I gathered it is easier on vehicles not to take your own car/camper up the Cape It is a lot of driving…but then it’s a long way High points: the weather, which was unrelentingly warm and sunny, every day; tasty and tasteful dinner at Restaurant 1770 in Cooktown; Wujal Wujal for the arts and crafts; swimming at Fruit Bat Falls; dancing at Bramwell Station; standing at ‘the Tip’ (northernmost point of the Australian mainland). We were lucky to have a knowledgeable, friendly, patient tour guide/driver in Mark and fabulous company from a bunch of cheerful, friendly Aussies. The whole trip was a superb team effort. Maybe we were lucky but the roads were much smoother than anticipated and rivers to ford were mere streams. We saw lots of native birds, a few wallabies and fewer crocodiles; much red dirt, dense rainforest and bigger bigger diggers at Weipa’s mine. We shared a bathroom with a giant spider that everyone assured us was harmless(!), watched a goanna digging madly, turtles feeding and tree ants house-building. We admired hundreds of gigantic termite mounds and one snake…also harmless, they said. Accommodation was varied. We chose the ‘ensuite’ option and got everything from standard motel to box cabin. Always clean and always air conditioned, though of varied vintages. Best thing about travelling as a group is the people you meet. The list of places we must see in Australia has grown a lot after many conversations. We’d recommend Heritage. Its organisation was seamless from the punctual first pick up to the final transport back to our Cairns hotel. We’d recommend Cape York, too. Most lasting memory will be of all that inviting white sand and warm, blue water that is out of bounds to humans. The crocs must be laughing.

Cape York Peninsula, we made it just about a week ago as part of our drive around Australia. We have done the most Eastern point in Oz and now the most northern part of the country as well (not including islands and outer territories). It’s beautiful up here, lots of caravaners this time of year making the PDR a bit slow going but once you get here, your worries wash away and it’s quite lovely.

I would recommend this trip with Tagalong, to anyone who has a sense of adventure but also wants to make sure they arrive home safely. The trip lived up to the description of the tour on the internet page - and more!!! The itinerary was varied. We took in history eg. indigenuous rockart, mining sites, Cooktown. We swam in rivers and falls, saw beautiful beaches and were treated to a star-gazing 'special'. The campsites ranged from all mod cons and live entertainment, to the peace and solitude of a National Park. Our main reason for doing the Tour was to drive the Old Telegraph Track and this exciting and challenging 4WD experience, lived up to all our expectations. 'The journey is its own reward.' John, our guide, professionally fed us with information about the areas we travelled through and made sure that even unexperienced, foreign, 4WDrivers like ourselves got through unscathed. On the personal side, he's a great guy who can tell a good story and we had a lot of laughs together. And our fellow travellers were a great bunch. We learnt a lot during this trip and also met some great people. Many thanks to Tagalong Tours and also our fellow travellers for all the help they gave us.

The Cape was a place I'd managed to avoid over the past 30 years of travel but was convinced it was time tio give it a go. Travelling as a group, we were fortunate to be retracing the routes of friends who had been previousely. There were a lot of highlights but the overall condition and exploitive nature of the place was a let down. The Peninsula Developmetn Road (PDR) was both excellent and horrific with b oth ends of the spectrum experienced along its 900 km length. Certainly the last 200km to the Jardine River ferry waas the worst with corrugations and conditions that cause sewrious issues considering the number of people travelling on the road. Travellinjg at 80kph plus IS NOT the best way of getrting 'on top' of the corrugation! Certainly the Old Telegraph Track has become an iconic location for every 4x4 Action Magazine reader with no teeth, plenty of tats and a 12 inch left on their GQ. The conditions are poor with most crossing deteriorating. You will not complete this trip without damage of some sort to your vehicle. Avoid school holiday periods at all costs. Highlights, Fruitbat and Twin Falls, the occasional river crossing, Mutee Heads, Frenchman's Track, Lakefield NP, Maytown, Thursday and Horn Islands, Loyalty Beach and the Tip.. Downers - The cost of most items, the poor road conditions, the crowds of people and the exploitative costs of all things associated with travel and tourism in the Cape.

This was an amazing experience. There were so many high points , but the main ones of course were walking to the tip and experiencing the sunset over Albatross bay. Paul , our guide was extremely supportive, generous, professional , knowledgeable and just a great bloke. We travelled most of the cape and learnt so much about our history. The telegraph track was an incredible drive. This is one of the best things I have done. make sure you have a very well equipped 4WD and some off road experience

Contrary to the reviewer (June 2009) we found the trip very competitively priced. All our dealings with the company were of the highest standard. From the first phone call they were most helpful, nothing was too much trouble. Torrential rain had fallen on the cape the weekend before our departure on the next Tuesday. This meant a change of itinerary. We travelled over the Kuranda range, through beautiful rainforest country on to Mareeba, Mt Molloy and Lakeland passing many banana plantations, even spotted brolgas near a lagoon covered with water liies. Cooktown was our first overnight stop - Seaview motel overlooking the Endeavour River - such a great outlook. Dinner was at 1770 restaurant on the waterfront, good food, good service and a wonderful atmosphere. Plans changed again because of road closures. We travelled to Laura where we visited Split Rock and the famous Quinkan Rock art site before an overnight stop at Musgrave. Next day the roads were reopening and we were back on track. Although this diversion was not what we were expecting we all agreed it was an informative and enjoyable experience. The road to the "tip" is long and varied. Our guide/driver, Lara, was very professional and knowledgeable. Her commentary gave us a good understanding of the country, its people and history. All the accommodation was clean and comfortable. We looked forward to breakfast and lunch - found some gorgeous spots to eat. Lara was well organised and provided fresh, varied lunches - It was an advantage to be able to choose what we liked from the selection she provided.. Although she did not expect help, it was a lot of fun as we all did our bit. The dinners were two courses (1 three course) at a restaurant, resort or homestead. At Weipa we had a long wait for the meal at a restaurant. At Seisia the choice of the main course included local prawns. What a treat! The highlight - we made it to the "Tip" - great views of surrounding islands and beautiful blue waters. How good was that. We opted for the add-on day on Horn Island. Thursday and Horn Islands are picturesque and interesting, Because of the extra day we had more time to mix with the local people and check out non-touristy places. On Thursday Island, the cafe overlooking the beach was a find, the crayfish pies were delicious!!!! The museum on Horn Island was well worth a visit. Thank you, Heritage Tours and Lara for a memorable trip in your brand new bus. We certainly enjoyed every aspect of the tour and will certainly recommend this company to our friends.
