More companies are offering high salaries for entry-level jobs.

According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, a total of 353,000 new positions were added to the job market in January, 2024. It’s a job hunter’s market, and applicants are enjoying wider choices when it comes to hiring, plus they get to enjoy a greater range of salaries. Job seekers are searching for positions that offer high-paying positions with other benefits such as low stress , requiring only an associate degree , tailored just for introverts or high-paying women-led jobs. Now companies are listing high-salaried jobs for entry-level candidates.

High-Paying Entry-Level Jobs

According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, jobs that require at least five years of experience pay two times more than those with no experience requirement. But there are a handful of major companies offering highly competitive salaries above the median average wage for entry-level positions. Most of these lucrative jobs are with large healthcare, finance and retail companies. In a new study, CashNetUSA analyzed regional job listings and ranked large companies based on the percentage of entry-level jobs that pay the best in the U.S. Here are the top 15 entry jobs above median pay that offer the highest compensation for the least experience:

  • Tenet Healthcare THC Corporation. 87.8%

  • Wells Fargo WFC & Company. 42.9%
  • Walgreens Boos Alliance. 38.8%

How to Secure an Entry-Level Job

Entering the world of work or a new industry can be an adventure—but it can also be stressful if you look at it as a problem to solve. What will the interview be like? Who will conduct it? Or will I be able to be on the top of my game? Matt Pelkey recommends giving yourself the best shot at finding employment quickly. Pelkey—senior lead content strategist at Enova (CashNetUSA’s parent company)—suggests these five steps to make an impression and stand out above the competition.

  • Build your network. “You’re never too young to start networking. Let family and friends know you are looking for work and join industry events and online communities. You may find a connection that can provide you with interesting opportunities or even an introduction to an employer.”
  • Polish your resume and cover letter for each job. “Employers get a lot of applications for entry-level positions. Stand out by referring to the employer by name in your letter, mentioning something you respect about the company. And adapt your resume to make it easy for them to spot the parts that are relevant to the position.”
  • Highlight your transferable skills. “If you lack direct experience or qualifications, draw attention to your other skills and achievements and illustrate how they apply to the job at hand. For example, accomplishments such as captaining a sports team or excelling at school debates demonstrate your confidence and communication skills.”
  • Practice being interviewed. “If you don’t have much experience in job interviews, a little preparation can help you seem more professional. Ask your school or college careers advisor for help, or prepare a list of common questions and practice answering them with a friend.”
  • Follow up with a call or email. “Remind the employer that you’re personable and highly motivated by sending a thank you note and addressing it by name.”

Best High-Yield Savings Accounts Of 2024

Best 5% interest savings accounts of 2024.

“Few entry-level jobs will make you rich, but finding the right role in the right place can make a significant difference to how much you bring home,” Pelkey points out. “Good wages can also indicate that an employer values their team highly, no matter how junior the position. If everything clicks into place, it could prove a very fulfilling job—and an excellent starting place to move up the company as you develop your career.”

Target doubles bonuses for salaried employees after profits jump in 2023

safari company jobs salary

Target is rewarding its salaried employees by doubling bonuses as the company saw a surge in profits in 2023.

The company reported $2 billion in additional profit growth last year, company spokesperson Brian Harper-Tibaldo told USA TODAY, and are "rewarding our team accordingly."

"Like many companies, Target offers a bonus plan for select employees, including leaders in our stores and supply chain operations, that is designed to reward their performance in driving our results," Target spokesperson Brian Harper-Tibaldo said in the statement. "The bonus structure is informed by goals set at the beginning of the fiscal year, and includes sales performance and profit outcomes."

While hourly employees are not eligible for the bonuses, a company spokesperson told USA TODAY that hourly employees are eligible for bonuses under a separate program.

CEO: Walmart managers can earn nearly half a million dollars a year with stock grants

Target self-checkout changes: Target limits self-checkout to 10 items or less: What shoppers need to know

Big-box retail competitor Walmart raised base pay for its store managers from $117,000 to $128,000 a year, and depending on a store's profit, annual bonuses could reach up to 200% of a store manager's salary. John Furner, president and CEO of Walmart U.S., said store managers will receive an annual grant of Walmart stock starting in April, with managers of the largest stores receiving up to $20,000 in stock every year.

Target changes self-checkout policy at all stores

Target is making some checkout changes after  recently testing limits on the number of items customers can have in self-checkout lanes . Express self-checkout lanes with limits of 10 items or fewer were rolled out on March 17 at most of Target's nearly 2,000 stores nationwide, the company said in an announcement last week .

"While the hours of operation may vary based on store needs, Express Self-Checkout will be available during the busiest shopping times,"  Target  said in the announcement.

Stores will also open more checkout lanes staffed with clerks for shoppers "who have more in their Target carts, need a helping hand, or just enjoy connecting with our team to help them get on their way sooner," the company said.

At each location, "store leaders have the flexibility to open more lanes staffed by team members and set self-checkout hours that are right for their store," Target said.

"Checking out is one of the most important moments of the Target run, and we know that a fast, easy experience –whether at self-checkout or the lanes staffed by our friendly team members – is critical to getting guests on their way quickly," the company said in the announcement.

Back in October, a company spokesperson told USA TODAY the retailer had begun experimenting with self-checkout lanes limited to 10 items or fewer at select locations "in order to reduce wait times and better understand guest preferences."

Unilever to Cut 7,500 Jobs and Spin Off Ben & Jerry’s Ice Cream Unit

The consumer goods giant said the moves would make for a “simpler, more focused company” as consumers trade down to cheaper brands amid high inflation.

A pile of pint-size Ben & Jerry’s ice creams.

By Jason Karaian

Unilever, the consumer goods giant, said on Tuesday that it would cut 7,500 jobs and spin off its ice cream unit, which includes Ben & Jerry’s, to reduce costs and simplify its portfolio of brands.

The moves would make for “a simpler, more focused and higher performing Unilever,” Ian Meakins, the London-based company’s chair, said in a statement. The group’s ice cream unit generated 7.9 billion euros ($8.6 billion) in sales last year, or about 13 percent of the group’s total.

The division is home to Ben & Jerry’s, which Unilever acquired in 2000 , along with brands like Cornetto, Magnum, Talenti and Wall’s. The spinoff is expected to be completed by the end of 2025.

Hein Schumacher, who took over as Unilever’s chief executive in July, announced a plan late last year to “drive growth and unlock potential,” in part by focusing more attention on just 30 of the group’s hundreds of brands.

On Tuesday, he said the job cuts and ice cream spinoff would “accelerate” the plan, saving nearly $870 million in costs over the next three years. The layoffs, of “predominantly office-based roles” around the world, amount to about 6 percent of Unilever’s work force.

In early 2022, Nelson Peltz , one of Wall Street’s most prominent activist investors, began building a stake in Unilever. Mr. Peltz, who is known for pushing companies to simplify their corporate structures, got a seat later that year on Unilever’s board, where he remains.

After the proposed spinoff, Unilever’s remaining units would include health and beauty brands like Dove soap, consumer goods like Surf detergent and food brands including Hellmann’s mayonnaise.

Unilever rival Nestlé shifted many of its European ice cream brands to a joint venture with a private equity firm in 2016 and sold its U.S. brands, including Dreyer’s and Häagen-Dazs, to the venture in 2019.

Unilever has struggled in recent years, with revenue growth propped up by steep price increases as sales volumes have declined. Squeezed by inflation, consumers have been turning instead to cheaper brands in many of Unilever’s biggest categories, most notably less essential products like ice cream.

The ice cream division faced the highest input-cost inflation in Unilever’s portfolio last year, the company said in an earnings report last month. It passed on some of those costs to consumers, prompting them to buy less or switch to cheaper brands, leading to a “disappointing year with declining market share and profitability,” the company said.

“The company has tried accelerated cost-cutting for accelerated growth for at least a decade,” analysts at Bernstein wrote in a research note. “This plan remains ‘we will try harder’ to execute the same plan, or hope over experience,” they added. Unilever’s shares rose about 3 percent on Tuesday, but have been roughly flat over the past year.

Ben & Jerry’s, which has been run by an independent board since its takeover by Unilever, has not always sat comfortably in the portfolio of a staid multinational corporation. The founders of the Vermont-based brand are outspoken on hot-button social and political issues ; in 2021, they said they would end sales in Israeli-occupied territories .

That led some U.S. pension funds to divest from Unilever and prompted a shareholder lawsuit. Ben & Jerry’s sued Unilever in 2022 to stop it from selling distribution rights to a licensee in Israel. Unilever eventually sold the rights to its longstanding local partner there, which continues to sell the ice cream with slightly different branding.
