Live Review: The Prodigy [Manchester, O2 Victoria Warehouse] July 19, 2022

Home » Live Review: The Prodigy [Manchester, O2 Victoria Warehouse] July 19, 2022

Electronic Dance titans The Prodigy announced earlier this year that they were going to be embarking on their first live tour since the tragic death of band member Keith Flint. It was described as being a celebration of 25 years since the group’s iconic album The Fat Of The Land was released. After a few shows around the country, the 19 th  of July saw the band hitting up Manchester on one of, if not, the hottest days of the year.

DJ, Jaguar Skills opened up for them with a set that got the hot and sweaty crowd riled up for the main act. His set mainly consisted of drum and bass and breakbeats however, the inclusions of metal acts, including Rage Against The Machine and System Of A Down as well as hip -hop such as Dizzee Rascal and Wu Tang Clan went down an absolute storm with the crowd. After over an hour of heart-racing, blood-pumping music, Jaguar Skills left the stage to the sound of ‘Teenage Kicks’ by The Undertones and the crowd stood in excitement for the main event.

After a while The Prodigy (Maxim, Rob Holliday, Leo Crabtree, Liam Howlett) walked onto the stage to riotous applause from the crowd. It was as if everyone had instantly forgotten about how hot they were, and consequently, were ready for the gig of a lifetime. Frontman Maxim asked the crowd if they were ready, and after what felt like minutes of silence the opening guitar lick of their smash hit ‘Breathe’ was released into the venue. As soon as the drums kicked in the crowd went insane with a level of energy that didn’t falter at all throughout the hour-plus set.

As the set progressed, the venue lit up with green lasers, and suddenly at the top of the stage an etching of a silhouette of the late great Keith Flint was projected and ‘Firestarter’ erupted in the building. The crowd’s response was deafening as people were screaming Keith’s lyrics at the top of their lungs. It was a beautiful moment in the set. Following the song’s ending the crowd started chanting “Keith” and frontman Maxim exclaimed “he’s still here!” over and over. It was a deeply emotional moment to be a part of.

The night continued with simply banger after banger. Highlights for me included the songs from 1995’s Music For The Jilted Generation whether it was ‘Break and Enter’, ‘No Good (Start The Dance)’ or the fan favourite ‘Voodoo People’. As well as this, newer songs such as ‘Need Some1’ worked incredibly well in the set as a sort of breather with its slower tempo in comparison to the breakbeats in earlier songs.

The Prodigy put on not only one of the loudest shows I have ever attended but one of the best. The setlist was all-killer no-filler and the band were on top form. I’d like to give special mention to frontman Maxim who kept the crowd riled up all night and didn’t miss a beat.

It’s sad to see the band without the icon that is Keith Flint, but it is admirable and nice to see the band continue on whilst still paying respect to him. The Prodigy whilst being 30-plus years in, continue to be one of the most electrifying live acts on the planet.

Magnetic man … Maxim of the Prodigy performing in Liverpool.

The Prodigy review – tireless electro-punks do Keith Flint proud

Mountford Hall, Liverpool The late vocalist is etched in lasers for a comeback show that proves the fiery veterans are still a source of euphoria

A n air raid siren sounds and bass starts hammering through the subwoofers with convulsive power. The Prodigy arrive on stage and vocalist Maxim clambers atop a speaker stack where he stands statuesque, bathed in strobes. The opening riff of Breathe begins as live guitarist Rob Holliday, in sleeveless leather, starts slinging his instrument around like an out-of-control chainsaw. Pandemonium is instant.

This run of shows is the band’s first since the death of their vocalist and dancer Keith Flint in 2019, a man whose devil-horned hair became a more recognisable emblem for the Prodigy than their actual ant logo. Such was his stage presence that in the aftermath of his death some wondered whether the band could continue without him – but the showmanship is so powerful here that the audience are clearly not worried.

During Firestarter an outline of Flint (instantly recognisable thanks to the horns) is beamed on to centre stage with lasers, and it dances along with jerky intensity. “He’s still fucking here!” repeats Maxim afterwards, movingly. There is also an impromptu moment when Liam Howlett takes a flag featuring Flint’s silhouette from the audience and holds it aloft as they return for their encore. These are the only nods to their late bandmate but their performance feels like a tribute in itself.

Standard bearer … Liam Howlett of the Prodigy performing in Liverpool.

The breadth of bangers at the band’s disposal certainly helps, and they perform them magnificently. Smack My Bitch Up is amped up to unhinged proportions as drummer Leo Crabtree furiously lets loose, and newer tracks such as 2018’s We Live Forever (whose refrain takes on unavoidable new significance without Flint) are delivered with similar energy. By the time they close with the Chase the Devil-sampling Out of Space, dizzy grins adorn the faces of an audience left absolutely spent.

Maxim has always been a magnetic frontman in his own right and remains so tonight, spry on his feet like a sparring boxer as he bounds around the stage. The minute the energy starts to sag in any section of the crowd, he points it out and demands they raise it. There’s an urgency to the Prodigy’s playing that seems to come from somewhere deeper than before: the euphoria and release they provide is overwhelming, and compounded by the enduring presence of a man whose career was spent embodying those qualities.

The Prodigy O2 Academy review: Band put on a stellar show and delight fans with their classic bangers

author image

The Prodigy wowed fans at Leeds O2 Academy with their hits (Picture: Getty)

Though everyone seems to have forgotten it now, the real winners of the Nineties Britpop wars were The Prodigy.

The Essex lads – musical boffin Liam Howlett and some more extrovert friends to front up before crowds of rave-crazed youth – managed to appeal to everyone from old punks to dayglo dancers, hip hoppers and metal heads alike with some of the least nostalgic pop music ever made.

So, to mark 25 years since the 10-million-selling The Fat of the Land, they’ve gone out to play some (but not all) of it in rooms that even now seem far too small for them.

They took to the stage at Leeds’ O2 Academy, with previous tour dates including Liverpool and Sheffield, before they head to London and Manchester for gigs throughout July.

It was great fun. The classic bangers were all present, from the opening blast of Breathe – still the best punk single to top the UK charts – through Voodoo People, Poison and the time capsule of No Good (Start the Dance).

In what was the band’s first tour since the death of Keith Flint, his presence was missed, with the absence of his guitar heavy grind through Firestarter even more poignant.

The Prodigy

However, the lead singer – who died at the age of 49 – was honoured by his bandmates, with his famous grandma-scaring silhouette etched by lasers most effectively.

The light show throughout was terrific incidentally, transforming an unpromisingly cramped venue into a mini-arena.

Even less exalted, later tunes like Wild Frontier and Get Your Fight On, little more than chants over those oh-so seductive and familiar beats, were fine in context.

It might not be a new sound, but it’s their sound and it still works.

So, the music may not have changed, but everybody in the house, onstage and in the crowd, has.

No longer fluorescent adolescents, but adults who’ve dealt with life changing events, good and bad, they all let their inner teenager out tonight.

Rising out from Essex, UK, The Prodigy have become one of the biggest electronic acts for over the past 20 years.

Hard-hitting UK electronica act, The Prodigy, have been wowing audiences with their incendiary live performance since 1990, with their punishing mishmash of rave, hardcore techno, jungle, breakbeat and rock/punk influences. The group currently consists of members Liam Howlett (founder, keyboardist and composer), Keith Flint (dancer and vocalist), Leo Crabtree (drums), Rob Holliday (lead guitarist) and Maxim (MC and vocalist). The Prodigy have sold over 25 million records worldwide, becoming known as 'the premiere dance act for the alternative masses.'

The Prodigy achieved success early on in the UK, with their single "Charly" reaching number three in the UK SIngles Chart in 1991. Their first full length, "Experience" (1992) also achieved critical acclaim, with its singles "Everybody in The Place," "Out of Space" and "Fire/Jericho" becoming big hits on the UK rave scene.

It was not until their release of "The Fat of the Land" (1997) that Prodigy broke into the international market, with their single "Firestarter" becoming a huge hit, reaching number one in the UK Singles Chart. The album featured a heavier, more punk/rock influenced sound that attracted fans outside of the electronica scene, becoming a big crossover hit and helping The Prodigy to become one of the most successful acts in the dance genre. Their music was not without controversy however, with their single "Smack My Bitch Up" attracting much criticism for its lyrical content supposedly promoting violence against women. The music video was particularly extreme, featuring a first-person viewpoint as the protagonist indulges in drugs and alcohol before embarking on a wild night clubbing.

The Prodigy have achieved continued success, with a short hiatus in 1999 before reuniting in 2002. Their record, "Invaders Must Die" (2009) charted at humber one in the UK within the first week, as well as reaching the top ten in several other countries. Their live performances have become stuff of legend, often featuring dramatic light shows and pyrotechnics, becoming huge favourites on the global festival circuit, headlining many festivals every summer.

Live reviews

Saw The Prodigy play Capital FM arena in Nottingham a few days ago as part of their 'The Day is my Enemy' tour. The show was pretty explosive as some would say. From start to finish it was a non-stop wall of noise (good noise) and flashing lights creating a rather intense knackering experience. In terms of their set they played a healthy mix of their greatest hits and songs off their rather good latest album.

Out of transparency I would say that I'm a decent Prodigy fan, I've listened to only 2 of their albums and have heard a greatest hits playlist before, but I found that I knew virtually every song they played.

Obviously, classics like Firestarter, Omen and Breathe had the whole stadium rocking and shouting along. And for songs that I knew less well it didn't really matter as everyone was bouncing along; I would say that you will need to be a fan or at least neutral to a mosh pits with the front half of the arena featuring minimum of 3 from what I could sort of see when being flung about (the biggest felt like it encompassed a solid 5th of the arena).

If you like to get as close to the band as you can at a gig but are a bit tardy then this is perfect for you, I started around the halfway mark and ended up 3 people deep from the front (via the multiple mosh pits on route). It was absolute carnage.

The crowd was an interesting mix, there were some rather fearsome looking ravers (who were perfectly fine) and a whole assortment of ages (from teens experiencing their 1st Prodigy concert to their parents who clearly knocked about back in the day).

There were a few complaints: as others have documented this is a notoriously late band and lived up to their rep by being 30 minutes late (annoying when you need to pee and not sure just how late they will be and funny considering their support Public Enemy were 5 minutes early); National Ice Arena doesn't have the greatest sound quality and their screens are rather small (but annoying for people further back); finally my friend ending up doing in his knee meaning I missed 15 mins and watched the final 3rd from the seating area. The last 2 complaints have nothing to do with The Prodigy to be fair.

Overall, I would say it had the potential to have been one of the best gigs I've been to (if only my friend had a sturdier knee). If you're a Prod fan then obviously you should go and I would say if you're a casual fan (like myself) or a dance fan or a fan of intense gigs then I'd say it's definitely worth the punt.

Prodigious. Truer words were never spoken.

I think trying to define a Prodigy gig is trying to analyse an explosion. Good luck.

My experience of The Prodigy was as headliners of Download 2012 and the uproar before their appearance was deafening. An electronic artist? At a rock festival? Sacrilege. I (after having my mind erased and replaced after listening to Invaders Must Die) was quite looking forward to the spectacle, seeing some variety like this at Download is uncommon.

Suffice to say, after there departure 2 hours later, not only was the unsure converted but my expectations were surpassed. After a day of harsh music, the kind of pounding, positive, fists-in-the-air electro-rock flooding onto us was just what I needed. I can safely say that I have never (and not been since) been in a "dance pit" before and being urinated upon (don't ask) didn't dampen the mood either.

The standout moments of the night were classic stompers "World's On Fire" and "Breathe" starting off the night and hits like "Take Me To The Hospital" and "Firestarter" keeping energy up throughout the set. By the time "Their Law" rolled around to close their set, I was disappointed, I wanted more!

In short, if you are, in any way, in love with music, seeing The Prodigy would be a no-brainer and a must for your to-watch list.

Ah Prodigy are nuts!! In a totally awesome way. I remember getting their Fat of the Land CD as part of my Columbia House 12 CDs for $12 deal and was non stop listening to it. Then proceeded to purchase their earlier albums as well in order to constantly blast their outrageous, hard hitting sounds. I never had the opportunity to see them as a kid and always regretted it. Luckily I saw them for their Invaders Must Die tour, being a college graduate, and it totally brought back those great memories and intense songs that I always loved. Keith Flint the lead singer/dancer didn't stop jumping around for the entire 2 hour set. He got everyone else doing it too. Every Prodigy song makes you want to rage and just get crazy. It was the highest energy show and I left feeling like I had shots of adrenaline pumped into my veins. So much fun!

Absolutely amazing to see live would definitely recommend them to anyone!

I’ll be certainly be going to see them again when they tour next. Unbelievable show!

The best song for me was either fire or take me to the hospital cos they’re classics and my favourite songs by them so it was brilliant to see them perform those.

I’d personally recommend standing for it cos it was amazing to be in a proper moshpit and dancing around for the whole time so would recommend standing for sure.

5* would recommend them to anyone! If you’re contemplating going to see them just go would not even question it!

I love Prodigy! They are my favorities!

I listen to their music since 1998.

But I was never before on a Prodigy concert and I was exited to listen to them live.

I was together my girlfriend.

They were more than 1,5 hours late and till then we had to listen to some DJ's that wasn't a plasure at all.

Also we were in the center of the stage (the bottom side from the first part of the stage) but the sound was bad. Due to the lack of VIP-zone there were to many people in the front of the stage.

The concert didn't meet our expectations.

It was a spectacular show, with insane lights. I loved the videos on he wallscreens and listening to the new material live! I'm not sure if it's the venue but the sound was not good. I couldn't enjoy any song. Moreover, although the lights were amazing, they made it hard for me to see the stage. My eyes were hurting. As for the band, I'd love to see them having a different act on stage for a change, they've been doing the same thing for years... I'd like to see them again but I'd probably choose another venue.

Mental, mental, mental, mental, mental. Then another song came on mental, mental, mental, mental mental, mental. Then another song started mental, mental, mental, mental, mental. This was pretty much it. About 2 thirds through the set something happened that I have never experienced at a gig. There was a bass sound wave that came from the stage that was so deep the the sound wave it created blew the hairs on my arms on end. Mental. Great night & great scenes fair play to you Plymouth crew you owned it !!!!

Fantastic gig at the GMEX last night. The Prodigy were on top form, with a good selection from the back catalogue. Public Enemy were real crowd pleasers as well - Flava Flav on a hoverboard was a sight worth seeing.

The crowd were as boisterous as ever although I could have done without the morons smoking cigarettes & cigars in the venue.

Second time I've seen The Prodigy this year & hoping to catch them again next year.

Highly recommended.

From the opening bars of Omen the chaos commenced. Absolute madness from my position of middle front but wouldn't have had it any other way. The Prodigy did not disappoint, delivering all the well known hits mixed in with a few new ones. You definitely do not stay still and have to move with the crowd but I love it. This was my 10th Prodigy gig and I cannot wait for the 11th.

What an amazing show...waited a long time to see, hear and feel the fullness of how truly awesome the band was and is!

Apart from the parking fee, ridiculously overpriced refreshments and food, lack of air con (the hook line and sinker for purchasing everything) the experience was everything we expected and more.

We now can, tick this off the bucket list...Thanx!

The Prodigy live at Mad Cool 2023: hellishly good fun from an iconic act

Liam Howlett and Maxim close the Madrid festival's 2023 edition with a visceral 70-minute headline performance

It’s always wise to leave something in the tank for the final day of any festival – and that’s especially the case with Mad Cool Festival 2023 , with organisers offering their punters a high-energy choice of festival closer between Jamie xx  or  The Prodigy . Those who opt for the latter on the Madrid Is Life stage would’ve been best advised to limber up beforehand; indeed, NME spots a couple going through some yoga practices before Liam Howlett, Maxim and the fearsome Prodigy live band take to the stage.

Opening with ‘Breathe’ and a demand from relentless ringmaster Maxim to “bring the fucking noise!”, the pace doesn’t let up: ‘Omen’ is reassuringly face-melting, while live drummer Leo Crabtree’s piercing tom drum reverberates around the festival site during ‘Voodoo People’ – a track that still sounds as scintillating as it no doubt did upon its original release in 1994.

prodigy tour 2022 review

A fitting visual tribute to late Prodigy frontman Keith Flint appears on the giant screens that flank the stage during a rendition of the band’s genuinely iconic ‘Firestarter’, with Flint’s warped vocal sample interweaving with the live instrumentation. Maxim continues to carry the fire in Flint’s memory, though, with the vocalist instinctively commanding the various circle and mosh pits that emerge throughout the set.

“All my fucking warriors at the front representing,” he addresses the front row before ‘Their Law’. “All my Prodigy people in Spain: this shit is for fucking life .” The roar which greets this directive just goes to show that there are plenty of devotees in the Mad Cool crowd.

It all makes for a truly breathless experience even with third day festival fatigue setting in. A closing quartet of ‘Smack My Bitch Up’, ‘Take Me To The Hospital’, ‘Invaders Must Die’, ‘We Live Forever’ and ‘Out Of Space’ threatens to finish the exhausted Mad Cool faithful off for good – if they weren’t having so much fun, that is.

The Prodigy played:

‘Breathe’ ‘Omen’ ‘Wild Frontier’ ‘Light Up the Sky’ ‘Climbatize’ ‘Everybody in the Place’ ‘Voodoo People’ ‘No Good (Start the Dance)’ ‘Their Law’ ‘Omen’ (Reprise) ‘Firestarter’ ‘Roadblox’ ‘Get Your Fight On’ ‘Need Some1’ ‘Poison’ ‘Smack My Bitch Up’ ‘Take Me to the Hospital’ ‘Invaders Must Die’ ‘We Live Forever’ ‘Out of Space’
