As a runner this was probably the best tour I've ever done for several reasons. 1. I was outside running from spot to spot- not sitting on a bus. 2. I could enjoy the beautiful fall weather. 3. I was the only runner on my tour, so it was easy to ask questions. 4. I killed two birds with one stone! I got in my morning run AND got a bunch of great Philadelphia history. Rebecca who is currently the manager of Philadelphia City Running Tours was my guide. I allowed her to set the pace, as she was the one who was going to be doing most of the talking. We met at 8:30 on Saturday morning in front of Philadelphia Runner and took off from there for a 10k. I showed that we actually did a little father than that distance, which was fine for me. We hit a lot of historic Philadelphia highlights, and I got information about each one. They offer several different runs in both 5k and 10k distances. I cannot recommend this tour enough if you are a runner. I am excited to do another running tour in another city soon!

Hit the ground running, literally! So I first heard of City Running Tours (too late, unfortunately) during my visit to Boston last year. In planning for a recent trip to Philly, I decided to see which CRT routes/distances were available during my visit. Ambitiously (or just call me plain crazy), I signed up for two tours back-to-back - the Liberty Bell Group Run on Saturday (the morning right after my arrival) and the Historic Philadelphia Group Run on Sunday. I was hoping for one of the other ones such as South Philly, but that's all they had that weekend. On a side note, I actually did my own Rocky Steps/Art Museum Run 5K later that week starting from my hotel, so all was not lost. The Liberty Bell Run cost $35, is 3 miles long (although my GPS tracked it as 4 miles total), approximately 1 hour, no bag check available. T-shirt optional, additional cost during registration. This one starts from the Liberty Bell Center on Chestnut, and I gave myself extra time walking there to find the meeting spot. My tour guide was Rich, and turns out I was the only confirmed runner that morning. For the group price, I was actually surprised that they still came out and held the run with just me! Personalized tours start at $60 for 3 miles! From the Liberty Bell Center, we first ran down to Washington Square Park, through Society Hill, Headhouse, to the Vietnam Veterans Memorial, Korean War Memorial, Welcome Park, Irish Memorial, Penn's Landing, Christ Church, Elfreth's Alley, Race Street Pier (there were a bunch of people doing free yoga classes that morning, haha), Benjamin Franklin's Grave, and finished at the Liberty Bell Center (no line) and Independence Hall (outside only). Rich was a really great guide, pace wasn't too fast (conversational so he could tell me about all the places we were running through), and indulged my requests to stop for photos at some of the sites - either on my phone directly, or on his which were e-mailed back to me through his boss. This was a very fun way to preview the city on foot with the help of a guide. It's definitely better than just riding a bus, and better for you (get that blood pumping!). I really enjoyed this 5ish kilometer distance/pace to start my trip. The next day, got up early again for another, longer version of the previous run (pretty similar routes, slightly different though). The Historic Philadelphia Run cost $40, was 5.5 miles long, and lasted about 1.5 hours, no bag check. T-shirt optional, additional cost during registration. This one starts at the Philadelphia Runner store on Sansom (much closer to my hotel), where I met up with my tour guide Faye, as well as another guide, Annie, training a potential guide joining the group run to get a feel for it (4 of us total). The other runner who signed up called in sick, so I was yet again lucky (or crazy enough) to be the sole runner for a group price! Headed down Broad/Avenue of the Arts to Pine Street through the Gayborhood to Society Hill, Head House, all the way to Front Street by the war memorials again, up Dock Street back to Washington Square Park, past Independence Hall, Penn's Landing, past Christ Church and Betsy Ross House, Ben Franklin's Grave, westward through JFK "Love Park" Plaza until returning to the running store. Water bottles were provided, given that it was such a long route (5.77 miles according to my GPS) and a hot, humid morning. Only took one group photo at Head House that day, and ran at a faster pace for sure, to cover more ground - not to mention my tour guide was an Ironwoman! Again, the routes were very similar and some of the sights/facts were redundant, but different tour guides and routes made for a still enjoyable morning run. Tiring yet invigorating at the same time, and you learn a lot along the way, it's what makes it so worth it though. What a great tour this morning with Rebecca at City Running Tours in Philly. Learned so much great info and felt great doing it! I'm not a big runner but she set an easy pace for me and we hit the high points that I had requested for my first trip to the city. I highly recommend this experience!

city running tours philadelphia

This is my 2nd tour with CRT and Faye and Paul did not disappoint. This was a great experience from the jump- Rebecca was great on the organizational end, setting up a link for my team to register and confirming time, place and answering questions. Faye and Paul were upbeat, knowledgeable and friendly. This is a great way to see the city and to engage teens in history, as well as get in a productive run. I want to organize one in the spring with my family! Thanks CRT, we'll be back.

As someone who had just recently landed in Philly, I went on my first running tour through Old City last July. It was a great way to see the city, especially the major landmarks, and meet some cool people in the process. The guide was good about not going too fast (as the point of the tour was as much about checking out the sights as it was about getting our heart rates up), but we still covered some serious mileage. I got to explore Fairmount and the Art Museum area with my second running tour a few weeks after that. Annie was actually my tour guide for this one, and I thought she was fabulous. The folks on this tour were definitely more athletic, and I was a little intimidated (having only done a couple of 10K races back in California), but Annie was great in making sure that everyone was keeping up with each other, and that we were all having a good time. We got some awesome pics, lots of laughs, and tons of cool facts (seriously Jeopardy-worthy and many still imprinted on my brain)! Plus we looked awesome running up the Rocky steps. :) After having settled in these last few months, I decided to go on the South Philly tour. Even though I'd seen most of the sights already, it was great to get back to some of the favorites, especially Pat's and Geno's and the Italian Market, and to check out new places that were more obscure and tucked away. It's always surprising how much more there is to see in this city. This route seemed less interesting than the others, but the other folks who were on the tour totally made up for it -- very sweet and totally hilarious. My last tour (can you tell I'm a fan?) was a recent addition called the River to River tour, which took us from the Schuylkill to the Delaware. I swear I must be improving my cardio capacity, because this tour went super quickly even though it was one of the longer distances. It helped that we got to (randomly) enjoy a re-enactment of the Emancipation Proclamation! Abe Lincoln and all! The strong winds also made for an intense running experience (which I loved). While I think some of the tours could be tweaked a bit, the distances are perfect, the facts are awesome, and the tour guides are super supportive and knowledgeable. These tours are great for new transplants as well as visitors. I think they'd be great for conference participants, and anyone looking to see the city in a new and interesting and fitness-oriented way! :)

I had a warm welcome and a very educational experience led by the tour guide (Annie). We kept a steady and comfortable pace and not one corner of Philadelphia was without interesting historical knowledge relayed by Annie. A most fun and exciting experience for me as I am encouraged to explore more cities utilizing the City Running Tours.

Photo of Annie M.

A really great experience! The guides were very friendly and accommodating, and really knew their stuff. I did the South Philly run, and picked up a lot of information I didn't know at all. It was a great way to learn important Philly history, but in a way that didn't just focus on the stand-by tourist attractions. Would definitely do another one.

Photo of Missy V.

Great way to see the city, be active, and meet cool people. Affordable. Fun. The pace was casual. You could run faster or slower and a guide would always be with you. Highly recommended.

Photo of Kate C.

Our run was great! My friend and I are newer runners and the run was definitely fit to our needs. Our guide/s were extremely knowledgeable about the city and had loads of information to share. It was a fun way to check out so much of what Philly has to offer. Definitely would recommend!!!

Your Guide to Running in Philadelphia

city running tours philadelphia

Do you like to stay active when visiting a new city? You’re in luck — Philadelphia is a city built for runners.

Whether you prefer slow jogs or 4-minute miles, there are options for running in Philadelphia for everyone.

“You can retrace the footsteps of the Founding Fathers, take in the skyline from numerous easily accessible vantage points or listen to the sounds of your own footsteps along the trails in one of our beautiful urban parks like the Wissahickon or Pennypack,” said Liz Pagonis of Philadelphia Runner , an independent specialty running company.

“There are over 50 organized running clubs to meet up with and even more races that embrace and celebrate running in Philadelphia like the Philadelphia Distance Run, Philly Run Fest, Philadelphia Marathon, and the largest 10-mile road race in the country that runs right through the heart of the city – the Independence Blue Cross Broad Street Run.”

Find the trail, group, or tour that’s best for you and your running style for your stay in Philadelphia.

Running trails in Philadelphia

A bridge is shown with a pedestrian walkway. The Philadelphia skyline is shown off to the left. The sun appears to be rising to right beyond the bridge.

The Benjamin Franklin Bridge’s pedestrian walkway is also a great running path that provides stunning views of the city skyline. Photo by K. Huff for PHLCVB.

Embark on an exhilarating running adventure with these route recommendations from Pagonis of Philadelphia Runner:

Across the Ben Franklin Bridge

Run to New Jersey and back via the bridge’s pedestrian path which visitors can access via 5th and Race Streets. From the start of the bridge, it’s a three-mile round trip journey. This path offers stunning views of the Delaware River and the Philadelphia skyline, particularly at sunrise or sunset.

Kelly Drive aka “The East Falls Loop”

This nearly nine-mile run begins at Lloyd Hall, One Boathouse Row, next to the Philadelphia Museum of Art. The first segment stretches along the Schuylkill River to the Falls Bridge. Turn left, cross the bridge and turn left again, to head back downtown on MLK Jr Drive. For the very ambitious: Stay on the path, passing the bridge. The trail stretches for almost 20 more miles to Valley Forge National Park.

Along the Schuylkill River

To get in a two-mile run along the river, start at the Philadelphia Museum of Art and follow the Schuylkill River Trail , which is both on land and in the river thanks to the Schuylkill Banks boardwalk, until it ends in South Philadelphia.

Along the Delaware River

The Delaware River Trail runs about 1.5 miles along the Delaware River from Washington Green (Washington Ave at S. Christopher Columbus Boulevard) to the Race Street Pier (Race Street at N. Christopher Columbus Boulevard), bringing you by some of the Delaware River Waterfront’s many public spaces including  Spruce Street Harbor Park , the  Great Plaza at Penn’s Landing , and  Cherry Street Pier .

Boxer’s Trail

Nature lovers will enjoy this nearly four-mile path in East Fairmount Park, named in honor of boxers who trained there. In fact, this is were Muhammad Ali found Joe Frazier to challenge him to a match. Start and end your run in West Philadelphia at Reservoir Drive and North 33rd Street near the Sedgley Woods Disc Golf course.

Wissahickon Valley Park

A scenic, sprawling oasis just outside of Center City with a whopping 50-plus miles of trails in its 1,800 acres. Start at Forbidden Drive, the gravel path along the Wissahickon Creek, before seeking higher ground to hike the steep wooded trails that cut through the Wissahickon Gorge.

Competitive running in Philadelphia

Philadelphia is also home to a number of annual running events and competitions, which are perfect to plan a trip around if you enjoy participating in (or spectating) alongside others from around the state, nation, and world.

The Love Run

A sell-out event each year, the Love Run Half Marathon takes runners through Philadelphia’s great sights on an uplifting racecourse. The half marathon is held annually each March, typically on the last weekend of the month.

Penn Relays

The nation’s oldest and largest track and field competition , featuring top competitors from around the world at the high school, collegiate, and Olympic levels. Held annually at historic Franklin Field each April.

Independence Blue Cross Broad Street Run

A true Philadelphia tradition, the Independence Blue Cross Broad Street Run is one of the fastest and largest 10-mile runs in the country. The course is a point-to-point race along Broad Street, taking participants through many of Philadelphia’s diverse neighborhoods. The Independence Blue Cross Broad Street Run takes place annually in the spring.

Philadelphia Distance Run

The Philadelphia Distance Run annually takes place in the fall and includes two races: a 13.1-mile half marathon that loops through Center City and Fairmount Park, and a 5k route that stretches along Kelly Drive on the eastern shore of the Schuylkill River.

Philadelphia Marathon

Offering a marathon, half marathon, and an 8k run, Philadelphia Marathon Race Weekend has a course for every runner.  Even children can participate in the fun with the short distance Youth Fun Run, complete with medals and refreshments for participants. The main event of the weekend features the full marathon, a 26.2 mile race that captures the very essence of Philadelphia along its path, as it winds through every neighborhood. Don’t miss the Health & Fitness Expo , held at the Pennsylvania Convention Center.

8 Unique Philly Tours You’ll Actually Want to Take

From badass women to ghost signs, these tours offer eight very different ways to see ( really see!) Philly.

city running tours philadelphia

Society Hill / Photograph by Jon Bilous/Alamy

Look, everybody loves a double-decker bus tour, and why not? It’s the greatest-hits album of the city: easy, breezy, covering all the biggies. But as any true fan can tell you, the lasting love comes from a deeper cut. For that, you’ve got a ton of choices.

PAGP’s Neighborhood Walking Tours Take the neighborhood walking tours by the Preservation Alliance for Greater Philly . Tour manager Vinni Cheng calls them “pocket tours” — detailed two-hour jaunts through some small, specific swath of Philly like, say, Queen Village, where you visit the state’s oldest church (Old Swedes’, circa 1698) and learn the vaguely violent way Carpenter Street’s Sparks Shot Tower got its name. Chinatown, Society Hill, the Frank Furness buildings … PAGP covers massive territory, pocket by pocket. Check their site for scheduling.

Hidden City Philadelphia Tours Hidden City offers similarly niche tours, but with an emphasis on “changing the way local folks look at familiar places.” Maybe that means you explore the secrets of the subway, or Philly’s lost Jewish Quarter … or maybe you make the annual bike ride from Independence Hall to the Wissahickon for the “Hidden Geology” tour, which looks at the way 500-million-year-old rocks shaped the Philly we know today.

View this post on Instagram   A post shared by Beyond the Bell Tours (@beyondthebelltours)

Badass Women of Philly Tour Speaking of hidden: In a city where founding fathers cast a long shadow, the Badass Women of Philly walking tour, offered by Beyond the Bell Tours , finally spotlights some fresh (female!) characters. From forgotten founding mother Hannah Callowhill Penn to Pride pioneer Barbara Gittings, these are stories you haven’t heard a million times — or ever.

Green Book W alking Tour The same could be said of historic preservationist Faye Anderson’s Green Book walking tour, generally offered in the spring and fall. (Check Anderson’s site to stay in the loop.) Everyone associates the Green Book with the Jim Crow South, she says, but Philly was segregated, too. And Anderson, a walking treasure trove of stories, will lead you through a series of landmarks — the luxury hotels that did (and didn’t) allow Black guests, for instance, and the clubs where Philly-born Billie Holiday and Lee Morgan performed — while telling the tales that contextualize this sliver of Philly history.

Mural Arts Philadelphia Tours Slightly better known are the Mural Arts tours, which are popular for a reason: The art scattered about our streetscapes hits different when you’re up close, on foot, hearing the stories behind the murals and the communities they represent and decorate. MA is always coming up with new tours, too, like the recently added Germantown route.

View this post on Instagram   A post shared by Mural Arts Philadelphia (@muralarts)

Ghost Tour of Philadelphia Another crowd-pleaser is the Ghost Tour of Philadelphia. Yup, seriously: Get over the spectacle of a cloaked guide leading by lantern light and you’ll enjoy a fascinating, sometimes grisly history lesson. (So many bad marriages in the 1700s!)

City Running Tours If the walking part of all these walking tours feels too, er, pedestrian, try the guided City Running Tours, and jog your way along one of their intriguing routes. (South Philly landmarks! A craft beer trail! A circuit of Philly’s old, faded ghost signs !) They take all levels of runners.

Cara Schneider Bongiorno’s Philly Stories But if you prefer to avoid physical exertion altogether, call Cara Schneider Bongiorno. The 22-year Visit Philly vet has a new gig telling stories of important but little-known Philly moments (ever heard about the Mischianza of 1778?) at public meetups and private events. Shoot her a note via LinkedIn for info on her next event or to bring this fascinating “tour” to you.
