Former Carnival Cruise Ships and What Happened to Them

Ben Souza

A total of 33 different cruise ships have sailed under Carnival Cruise Line since the company’s first cruise in 1972. Here is a look at what happened to the seven cruise ships that are no longer sailing under the Carnival Cruise Line brand.

Mardi Gras (1972-1993)

Mardi Gras was Carnival’s first cruise ship.  On the maiden voyage, the cruise ship ran aground on a sandbar shortly after leaving Miami. Future voyages went much smoother.   The cruise ship sailed under Carnival for 21 years before being sold.  The ship sailed under the names Empress of Canada, Olympic, Star of Texas, Lucky Star, Apollo, and Apollon.  The ship was finally scrapped in 2003.

After 18 years in service with Carnival, the ship was sold and sailed under the names Empress of Britain, Queen Anna Maria, Fiesta Marina, Olympic, and The Topax.  In 2008, the ship was sold for scrap after sailing for 52 years.

After 19 years in service with Carnival, the ship was sold and sailed under the names Transvaal Castle, S.A. Vaal, Island Breeze, and the Big Red Boat III.  The ship was sold for scrap in 2003.

Tropicale (1982-2001)

Tropicale was the first cruise ship custom built for Carnival Cruise Line. Ocean Dream sails under the Peace Boat organization.

Carnival Ships by Age [2021] Newest to Oldest with Infographic

Carnival Ships by Age [Infographic] from Newest to Oldest

Below you'll find all Carnival Ships by Age from newest to oldest . We know that some members of our cruise community like the newest Carnival ship off the line. And we've heard that others prefer some nostalgia. Fortunately, Carnival offers a wide variety of ship ages.

In this age of hyper-sensitivity, we wouldn't dare favor the youngest over the oldest Carnival Cruise ship. Nor vice versa. We love all ships equally . As annoyingly "PC" as that sounds, we truly have a soft spot in our hearts for all Carnival's ships regardless of age.

Our charts below will help you find the perfectly aged ship for your specific preference. We've prepared an infographic laying out Carnival ships by Age from its newest active ship, the Mardi Gras (a beast), to its oldest ship still in operation (spoiler... it's the Ecstasy).

Carnival Oldest and Youngest Ships

Many cruisers will scroll to the very top or the very bottom of the chart. Maybe they want the freshest ship off the line. Or, perhaps they just want to avoid sailing the most ancient of the fleet. Either way, here are the most common two questions ask from potential Carnival cruisers.

What is Carnival’s newest cruise ship? Carnival's newest active ship is the Horizon, launched in 2018. The next ship to be launched will be the Panorama in December 2019 and then the Mardi Gras in 2020. See details on each below.

What is Carnival’s oldest ship? Carnival's oldest cruise ship, which is still active today, is the Carnival Fantasy. It was launched in 1990 and currently offers departures form Mobile, Alabama.

Often we're asked if "age" affects size . The short answer is, "yes." It's not a 1:1 correlation. The newest ship won't always be the most expensive. And the oldest the least. Many more factors will come into play. The cruise length, itinerary, season, etc will all factor in. A new ship will generally cost more. The older ships tend to offer more deals. To get a sense of pricing, use the widget below. Play around with ships and dates to see how price changes with age and more.

You'll see from our Carnival Ship Age Infographic that the cruise line's active ships go back to 1991. If you're on one of these older ships, however, don't think expect a 90's throwback complete with Nirvana music and tamagotchis. Cruise ships are regularly upgraded to provide the newest venues and a fresh coat of paint.

Let's be honest, the Carnival Ecstasy won't have the same "new ship smell" that you'll find on the Panorama. And cruise pricing typically reflects this . Newer ships and ships more recently renovated will command higher prices than those in need of some updates.

If you're looking for the newest cruise ship off the lot, then our graph below should be exactly what you need. If you're cool with a recently upgraded ship, be sure to check out the details below. In addition to the Carnival cruise ship age, you'll also find the most recent renovation date included. The adjoining text will provide detail on the venues added during that retrofit.

Enough ship talking. Below, find the complete list of active Carnival Ships by Age.

Carnival Cruise Ships by Size and Age (2022)

Carnival Cruise Line's Mardi Gras at sea

Carnival Cruise Line has an active fleet of twenty-three ships with a further three ships due to join the fleet in the near future ( Carnival Celebration and Carnival Jubilee are both new builds and a currently unnamed ship will transfer from sister brand Costa Cruises in late-2022.

The fleet is primarily based in the United States and sails frequently from the ports of Jacksonville (Florida), New York, Port Canaveral (Florida), San Francisco (California) and others.

Introduction to Carnival Cruise Line

Carnival Cruise Line is often mistaken for the parent company Carnival Corporation. The brand is the biggest of the Carnival Corporation brands and is the first cruise line that started the business back in 1972, by founder Ted Arison.

Carnival primarily caters to the North American market with a lot of onboard activities, dining and entertainment geared towards the American clientele.

Back in 1972, Ted Arison founded the cruise line with just one ship – a former transatlantic liner under the name Empress of Canada . It was renamed Mardi Gras and marketed to young fun-loving individuals – a market that was not catered for at this time by cruise lines.

It proved very popular and the business grew quickly to take on a second ship in 1975 (calling it Carnivale ) and the third ship in 1978.

It wasn’t until 1982 that Carnival had its own first purpose-built cruise ship, Tropicale . This is also the first ship where the iconic ‘winged funnel’ first appeared and is now a trademark part of every Carnival cruise ship that people first spot when arriving at a cruise port.

By the 1990s, Carnival had introduced further classes of ships and kept on growing quickly throughout the 2000s too, by 2020 the company had 28 ships in its fleet.

Carnival Cruise Ship Frequently Asked Questions

Has a carnival cruise ship ever sunk.

No. Never. Carnival has had some ships with fires and engine issues over the years, but these are few and far between.

The only ship to sink (partially) was Costa Concordia and is a sister brand to Carnival Cruise Line – both owned by the parent company Carnival Corporation.

How much is a Carnival cruise ship?

$1 Billion USD is the approximate price of a new Carnival cruise ship ( Mardi Gras ) currently – this is due to the size and facilities on the ships. In comparison, Carnival Sunshine cost just $409 million when she was built in 1996.

What is Carnival’s biggest cruise ship?

Mardi Gras is Carnival’s biggest ship at 180,000 GRT and able to carry 5,282 passengers. More than double of their smallest cruise ship.

What is Carnival’s smallest cruise ship?

Carnival Ecstasy is Carnival’s smallest cruise ship at just 70,367 GRT and able to carry 2,056 passengers – less than half of their biggest cruise ship.

What is Carnival’s oldest cruise ship?

Carnival Ecstasy is the oldest Carnival ship. It entered service in 1991. However, it was refurbished in 2017 and is due to return in late 2022.

What is Carnival’s newest cruise ship?

Mardi Gras is Carnival’s latest ship and entered service in 2021.

Carnival Cruise Ships by Size (from largest to smallest)

What does ‘tonnage (grt)’ mean.

GRT (Gross Registered Tonnage) is a term used to calculate the volume inside a ship. It is a measure of cubic capacity and is calculated by the total volume from inside the hull and decks of the ship. 1 GRT = 100 cubic feet of space. In essence, the bigger the GRT – the more ‘space’ the ship has for passengers, cargo, etc.

How are ‘Passengers (Max)’ calculated?

You’ll see multiple numbers for passengers on ships – this is because many ships include extra beds in cabins (such as the sofa/couch can convert to a pull-out bed) – but the majority of cabins usually have 2 people in them. the ‘Max’ number is if every cabin used their additional pull-out bed, etc. This number is unlikely to be reached very frequently.

Carnival Cruise Line - Carnival Vista

Carnival Cruise Ships by Age (from newest to oldest)

Carnival Cruise Line has one of the biggest gaps between its youngest and oldest cruise ships. The oldest ship in the fleet ( Carnival Ecstasy ) entered service in 1991 and the latest ship ( Marda Gras ) entered service in 2021 – three entire decades later.

Whilst the recent events in the world stopped the cruise lines in their tracks, Carnival will take the longest to get back on its feet as it was spending the most every month during the global cruise shutdown.

This is because it had the largest fleet at the time and one of the reasons why it sold off some of its older ships ( Carnival Fantasy, Carnival Fascination, Carnival Imagination, Carnival Inspiration and Carnival Sensation ) to other cruise lines or for scrap to save money.

Carnival does refurbish its ships and has undergone a large program to modernize its fleet – calling the newly refurbished ships ‘Fun Ship 2.0’ and adding the same bars and restaurants to the ships as found on some of their newer vessels.

Final Thoughts

Carnival is seen as a ‘fun’ cruise line – but it also has a reputation as a party line that attracts more budget-friendly cruisers. In the last few years, the cruise line has found a niche of cruisers who enjoy really fun things on their cruises, but also want a little luxury too.

Carnival Horizon aft area

Carnival Vista , Carnival Horizon , Carnival Panorama and now Mardi Gras all have a new class of cabin called ‘Havana Cabins’ which offer a more upmarket-style cabin in an area of the ship called the Havana Retreat.

Carnival Horizon Havana Retreat Bar area

This exclusive area offers its own pool, hot tubs and bars and is only accessible to passengers staying in the Havana Cabins. It is often located at the rear of each ship, affording excellent views from the aft out to sea and offering a tranquil area to rest from the rest of the fun onboard the ship.

What are the newest Carnival ships? Here's a list of all Carnival cruise ships by age

Ashley Kosciolek

What is the newest Carnival cruise ship? With Carnival Cruise Line frequently turning out new ships and adopting others from sister brand Costa , it can be difficult to keep track of the line's more than two dozen vessels.

As with most things, the shiniest and most recently built hardware is often the most exciting. The newest Carnival cruise ships are the line's largest, and they offer tons of activities like trivia, dance parties, bingo and nightly shows; top-deck amenities like water parks, ropes courses and even roller coasters ; a staggering variety of cuisines, from steak to Italian to sushi; ample bars and lounges; and some of the biggest and most exclusive accommodations in the fleet.

As a general guide, Carnival Cruise Line's ships are divided into nine classes , with the Excel, Venice and Vista classes being the latest to debut.

If you're interested in sorting by the year they were built, here's a list of the newest to oldest Carnival ships to help you figure out which is right for you.

What is the oldest Carnival ship?

The oldest Carnival ship is Carnival Sunshine. The ship debuted in 1996 under the name Carnival Destiny, but the cruise line gutted it, redesigned it from bow to stern and renamed it Carnival Sunshine in 2013.

The elderly vessel now looks shiny and nearly new with an adults-only sun deck, a water park, a comedy club and several bars, lounges and restaurants, as well as a spa. Dr. Seuss characters also make appearances as part of Carnival's Seuss at Sea programming.

Are there any new Carnival ships being built?

At the time of publication, Carnival Jubilee, the third ship in Carnival's Excel class, was still under construction and set to be delivered to Carnival in 2023.

The vessel, along with sisters Mardi Gras and Carnival Celebration, was designed as a throwback to the ship of the same name, which sailed for Carnival Cruise Line from 1986 to 2004.

Although the new ships bearing the old names give subtle nods to their predecessors, they're exceptionally modern, offering state-of-the-art shows, excellent food and jaw-dropping top-deck entertainment, such as ropes courses, water parks and even roller coasters.

Additionally, although it's already built, Costa Firenze — which sailed its maiden voyage for Costa Cruises in 2021 — will become Carnival Firenze when the vessel transfers to Carnival in 2024.

What are the newest Carnival cruise ships available for booking?

Both Carnival Jubilee and Carnival Firenze are open for bookings, with the former's cruises beginning in December 2023 and the latter setting sail starting in May 2024.

Information for the ships' first voyages is as follows:

  • Carnival Jubilee, Dec. 23, 2023: seven-night Western Caribbean cruise, round trip from Galveston, Texas, from $1,819 per person.
  • Carnival Firenze, May 2, 2024: five-night Mexican Riviera cruise, round trip from Los Angeles' Long Beach port, from $339 per person.

Both fares are for inside cabins with no windows or balconies. Fares were accurate at the time of booking; they are subject to change without notice. Taxes and port fees are extra.

What is the newest class of Carnival ships?

Carnival's Excel class is the newest of the line's nine classes, comprising Mardi Gras (2021), Carnival Celebration (2022) and Carnival Jubilee, which is set to begin sailing for the line in late 2023.

Despite featuring a plethora of modern onboard amenities, all three ships are named for former members of Carnival's founding fleet, which dates back to 1972.

What's the difference between newer and older Carnival ships?

The biggest difference is that the line's older vessels are considerably smaller than its newer ones. Carnival's oldest ships carry between 2,100 and 3,000 passengers, while its newest can accommodate more than 5,000 people.

It's a given that smaller ships don't have as much room to offer every single amenity that the larger ones do, but Carnival has made significant investments in its vessels in an attempt to make them more uniform across the board, regardless of their age.

A testament to that is the rollout of its Fun Ship 2.0 initiative, which cost $500 million and took five years to implement. It added the Punchliner Comedy Club and passenger-favorite Alchemy Bar to most ships and also brought Guy Fieri to the high seas with Guy's Burger Joint — a partnership that has expanded to include barbecue and microbrewed beer on the newest ships in the fleet.

Another difference is that newer vessels — those in the Vista and Excel classes — offer Havana Cabana staterooms, which include exclusive access to a dedicated bar and pool area just for people booked in the corresponding staterooms. On Excel-class ships, luxury-seeking travelers can book the biggest accommodations available: Presidential Suites, which measure 1,120 square feet and have 600-square-foot balconies.

The decor is also an easy way to tell the age of a Carnival ship. Older hardware is decked out with fun colors, neon lights and art installations by renowned architect Joe Farcus, who previously designed Carnival's ship interiors. (He's also responsible for the line's iconic "whale tail" funnels.) The aesthetics of Carnival's more recent ships are similar to just about any other cruise line — expect neutrals with pops of color here and there but nothing terribly interesting.

Finally, fares are a key differentiator. The older the ship, the more likely it is to sail shorter itineraries at a lower price point.

Carnival Cruise Ships By Age, Newest to Oldest 2024

Joe Miragliotta

Are you looking to book a Carnival cruise but want to know the age of the ship, its itinerary, and how many people it can hold? You’ve come to the right place.

As someone who cruises as often as I do, you might think I will say yes to practically any itinerary. That’s not true at all. In fact, I’m quite picky with what cruise ship I’ll book. Knowing what the ship has to offer, especially how new or old it is always plays a major role in how I book a cruise. This is why I created this post to break down Carnival Cruise Line’s ships by age, class, and how many guests they can accommodate.
