Really enjoyable Maroon Bells snowmobile tour

After seeing many gorgeous pictures of the Maroon Bells mountain peaks in the winter, my wife and I decided to visit in person on a recent trip to Aspen, by taking a snowmobile tour with T-Lazy-7. From what we could find, T-Lazy-7 seems to be the only snowmobile tour operator in the area that does Maroon Bells tours (and if not, they’re definitely the main one tour operator for it). We really enjoyed our tour, which featured an unforgettable chance to see these natural wonders. We booked the 9:00 am tour, and booked one snowmobile for two of us to share, which most couples in the group seemed to do. We were a little nervous about weather-related cancellations, as the reservation is very clear about the fact that Maroon Bells tours sometimes get cancelled and replaced with what seems to be a less exciting Pyramid Peak tour (you would have the option to decline the substitution and get a refund). However, we were glad to see perfectly clear and sunny weather in the forecast for the day of our tour, and we had no issue. Email instructions about what to wear and what to expect were also quite helpful, so we knew to dress warmly and basically treat it like going skiing when getting dressed. It felt quite cold on the tour when moving on the snowmobile, so don’t underestimate the need for layers. The ranch’s location is not far from Downtown Aspen, less than a 15-minute drive away just past the Aspen Highlands ski area. However, you will have to plan how to get there and back. Our hotel had a car we were able to sign-out for a few hours to drive ourselves there, which was very helpful, but it seemed that many groups called taxis. We arrived about 30 minutes early for our tour, in order to sign waivers and get fitted in our snowmobiling helmets prior to the tour. The ranch is nothing fancy and has no indoor areas, so once we completed those items (which really only took about 10 minutes), there was a bit of sitting outside in the cold to wait for the tour to start. Luckily, the owners’ very friendly dog Willow was nearby and eager to play fetch, so we filled up the rest of our time waiting with Willow, which was great. Once it was time for the tour, they gave a very quick overview of how to use the snowmobiles, which are pretty easy to figure out. However, some members of our group never became comfortable with them, so it might have been helpful if they had allowed everyone to do a couple loops on the track right by the ranch right at the beginning to become familiar with the snowmobiles and how they operate. We went to that track at the very end as a chance to ride with extra speed, but it would also be a good low-speed training area at the beginning. From now having completed the tour, I can see it’s essentially just a straight 5- or 6-mile ride from the ranch to the overlook at Maroon Lake that was the main destination for the Maroon Bells views. To add some variety and fill up the tour time, they had us start by going on a narrower, winding path through the woods that parallels the main road. However, a couple of the people in our group toward the back were really not comfortable on the snowmobiles, and led to a lot of stopping and waiting during the early portion of the tour. We had two guides, one at the front of the group and one at the back, and the one at the back was working with them to get them to keep going. For those of us who were better at it, it was a bit boring at the beginning with all the stop and start. Once we got back to the main road where it was more open, things got rearranged so that the guides took some of the people who were struggling on their snowmobiles as passengers, and we left their snowmobiles behind to be picked up later. This really helped speed things along, and we were able to go much more quickly going forward. The path also became much wider and more of a straightaway back on the main road, which helped us have the chance to increase speed. I did find the snowmobile a bit hard to maneuver, with difficulty steering, and it didn’t seem to have the best grip on the snow. I’m not sure if it was an older machine, or if that’s just how all snowmobiles are. We never really went higher than 25 mph even on the large open road, and I don’t think I would have been comfortable going much faster due to difficulty with control. I think this might be a little slow for some, but it was fine for us. It’s definitely not a situation where you have free rein to go as quickly as you want in really wide-open spaces. We were on an open road, but generally instructed to still go single-file and match speed to the person in front of us. We did stop one other time as we approached the Maroon Bells to get a first look at them and learn more about the other surrounding mountain ranges and the nature in the area. This stop was helpful for educational purposes, although some people in our group made every stop into much more of a production than it needed to be, taking unnecessary photos and long periods of time to get situated on and off their snowmobiles. The guides tried their best to keep things moving, but it was hard. When we finally reached the overlook to the Maroon Bells, it was well worth the time spent getting there. We parked the snowmobiles and then walked up to an overlook area that was just the perfect view of the mountains. It’s an absolutely gorgeous spot of incredible natural beauty, and well worth taking the tour to see. The guides were happy to take pictures of everyone up there, and they offered hot drinks at a stand nearby right after. There really wasn’t an opportunity for a bathroom stop here, but one person in our group insisted that they needed a bathroom, so one of the guides had to take her to some sort of outhouse-style bathroom nearby, which further delayed us in leaving the Maroon Bells stop. Being in a large group like that was a test of patience at times, and I thought the guides did their best to keep things moving, although they probably should have been slightly more forceful to help keep things on time. After that, it was all about getting back to the ranch as quickly as possible since we were behind schedule, and we just took the road straight back down to the ranch. It was getting a bit later in the morning at this point, so we encountered other people along the way who were using the road for things like biking and cross-country skiing, so we did have to be cognizant of speed even more on the way back. When we got back to the ranch, they took us to the track they have set up to allow us to ride as fast as we wanted and play around with the snowmobiles a little bit. We did a couple laps on the track, hitting more like 30 mph than the 20-25 that had characterized most of the trip. It was also a nice chance to briefly switch riders, so my wife had a chance to take over and drive, when she had otherwise been the passenger the whole time. Overall, our Maroon Bells snowmobile tour with T-Lazy-7 was excellent. The views are unparalleled, and taking a snowmobile to get there and see them is a lot of fun. The large group format can be a bit frustrating, which in our case led to us getting back almost 30 minutes beyond when the tour was supposed to finish (it was starting to feel a bit long at that point). Additionally, I wasn’t sure if the snowmobiles were in the best condition since they were a bit hard to use, but that could just be user error on my part. Given how nice the overall experience was, and how friendly and helpful the guides were, I’d definitely recommend the tour here. It’s a memorable day and highlight of a trip to Aspen.

Multiple things: the exhilaration of speeding through the snow, the majesty of the surrounding peaks, the wonder of meandering through the Aspen groves, the delicious grilled burgers at their mountainside cabin. The highlight of our week-long vacation.

My husband and I had a great time. The snowmobiles were in good working condition. Our guides Burger and Gabe were great! They were both knowledgeable, great story tellers and a lot of fun. The views were beautiful!

We had an amazing experience on our Maroon Bells tour! The views on our snowmobile ride were absolutely breathtaking! The tour guides were very welcoming and knowledgeable. For lunch we stopped at the Klondike Cabin, which was an attraction in itself. We enjoyed the delicious meal overlooking beautiful Marion Bells. Our group had such a great time on this tour and we highly recommend it! Thank you T-Lazy-7!

If you have a free day please during your ski trip, definitely check out the snowmobiling tour at T-Lazy-7 Ranch. Our tour was switched from Maroon Bells to Pyramid peak due to avalanche concerns but it did not matter. The tour, the trails, and views were spectacular. Our guides, Bekah and Sean, were great. We would definitely go back.

We had a great time doing the Klondike Lunch Tour with Lindsay and Matt, who were both great guides. Very scenic and great food too!

Pyramid Peak

Pyramid Peak

  • Duration 1 Day
  • Technical Climbing

Pyramid Peak, the closest 14,000 foot summit to downtown Aspen, just happens to be one the Elk Range’s most spectacular.

The peak is considered a classic in terms of scenery, positioning, difficulty and history. Due to its relatively easy access, we feel this is an excellent first “technical” peak to attempt with one or our AMGA trained / certified alpine guides. After leaving the trail on the way to Crater Lake, we travel on a good yet steep switchback trail to the “Pyramid Amphitheater.” From here we are negotiating boulders and loose scree to the “Pyramid Saddle.” This is where the climbing starts in earnest through named features like the “leap of faith” and the “Green Monster,” where you are pretty much guaranteed to have close encounters with the resident mountain goats. Our clients are safely secured on a rope with their guides through all technical sections of this climb. The summit of Pyramid offers some of the most spectacular views in the Elks, with the Maroon Bells right in your face directly across the valley. This ascent is ideal for those wanting to “take the next step” with us from hiking mountains to climbing them.

Other Useful Information

  • Acclimatization: Aspen and Snowmass sit at high altitudes, with Aspen at approximately 7,908 feet above sea level and Snowmass slightly higher at about 8,209 feet. It's common to feel the effects of the altitude upon arrival, such as shortness of breath and headaches. To mitigate these, stay hydrated, heavy exertion and alcohol intake on your first day, and consider bringing along altitude sickness medication if you're prone to it.
  • Layer Up: The mountain weather can be unpredictable, with rapid changes throughout the day. Dress in warm, layered clothing to adapt easily to varying conditions, whether hitting the slopes or exploring the towns.
  • Sun Protection: The high elevation means the sun's rays are more intense, so sunscreen is crucial, even on cloudy days. Lip balm with SPF and sunglasses are also must-haves to protect against sunburn and glare, especially when skiing or snowboarding.
  • Local Etiquette: While Aspen and Snowmass boast a selection of upscale dining and shopping options, the overall vibe remains relaxed and casual. There's no need for formal wear; smart casual attire will fit in perfectly in most venues.
  • Ski Etiquette and Tipping: Tipping your ski or snowboard instructor is customary; the recommended amount is 20%. Also, familiarize yourself with local ski etiquette, such as yielding to skiers downhill and being courteous on the lifts.
  • Ski Lingo: For beginners, the "bunny slope" is your starting point, a gentle hill with blue and green trails, perfect for those just finding their snow legs. When locals refer to "Ajax," they're talking about the iconic Aspen Mountain, known for its challenging terrain and black and double-black diamond trails. "Powder days" are what every skier dreams of, with fresh, fluffy snow offering the ideal conditions for an epic ride. "Pizza" refers to the wedge-shaped stance beginners use to slow down, where ski tips come together and tails spread apart. And "French fries" describes skiing with skis parallel, indicating a progression from the basic "pizza" technique.
  • Service Staff Tipping: Many service industry professionals in the area rely on the winter and summer seasons for their annual income, often sacrificing holidays, evenings, and weekends to ensure your experience is unforgettable. Your generosity makes a significant difference in their lives, so please remember to tip generously.
  • Transportation: To encourage visitors not to hire a car, Aspen has many complimentary options, including the City of Aspen's eight shuttle routes and RFTA's (Roaring Fork Transit Authority) complimentary buses to Aspen Airport, Brush Creek Intercept Lot, and Snowmass Village/Mountain, serving over a million people annually. High Mountain Taxi and the Downtowner app offer convenient alternatives to Uber, which can be scarce or extremely busy in this area. Plan and book your trips in advance, especially during peak times, to avoid waiting.
  • Cannabis Regulations: While cannabis is legal in Colorado, public consumption remains prohibited. Dispensaries are cash-only due to federal banking regulations, so come prepared if you plan to visit one.
  • Staying Connected: The towns of Aspen and Snowmass are well-connected with free Wi-Fi spots, but it's always a good idea to have a data plan ready for more remote areas on the mountains or trails.
  • Hydration and Nutrition: The tap water in Aspen and Snowmass is not only safe to drink but is celebrated for its exceptional purity and taste, stemming from the pristine snowmelt and mountain springs that serve as its source. Given the high altitude and dry climate, staying hydrated is crucial, so carrying a refillable water bottle is both an environmentally friendly and practical way to maintain hydration levels while enjoying the myriad outdoor activities these mountain towns offer. Also, eating small, frequent meals can help your body adjust to the altitude more comfortably.

T Lazy 7 is a year-round activity provider located on Maroon Creek Road, offering both horseback riding tours in the summer and snowmobile tours in the winter through picturesque national-forest land under the shadow of the Maroon Bells.

Thanks to T Lazy 7’s unique location at the last accessible point of Maroon Creek Road during winter months, their snowmobile tours take guests immediately into Aspen’s beautiful backcountry. Cruise along groomed trails, through aspen groves and wide meadow, and enjoy stunning views of the Maroon Bells, Pyramid Peak, and the surrounding mountains.

During winter months, we highly recommend T Lazy 7’s Klondike Cabin Lunch Tour , offered Tuesdays through Saturdays starting at 9:30 a.m. and 12:30 p.m. The excursion lasts 2.5 to 3 hours and costs $300 for a single rider and $440 for a double (two people on one snowmobile). No experience is necessary, and minimum age is four years old. Drivers must be 18 with a valid driver’s license.

Snowmass, Colorado should be added to everyone’s winter bucket list! Not only is it the perfect families and solo adventurers alike, but it has so many amazing things to do. Whether you are into hiking and snowshoeing, skiing and snowboarding, or simply would like to relax and take in some beautiful views, Snowmass has activities for everyone! Here is our Ultimate Winter Guide to Snowmass, Colorado:

Maroon Bells Snowmass

Know Before You Go to Snowmass :

Best time to visit: .

If you are planning your visit to Snowmass, Colorado to enjoy the snow is December-February for peak snow. However, we always love going in the slight off season since there are less crowds and equally as beautiful weather and conditions! We visited Snowmass in March 2021 and were greeted with a day of snow and two days of sunshine with ideal powder.

pyramid peak snowmobile tour

What to Pack:

During the winter, Snowmass is a winter wonderland. However, this means you must pack accordingly! Bring lots of layers. We always recommend bringing base layers, mid layers, and waterproof puffy/ski jackets and pants to keep you warm. We also brought beanies, wool socks, hand warmers, waterproof hiking shoes/snow boots, ski goggles/sunglasses, chapstick, and lots of sunscreen since the UV rays can be strong out on the snow!

Transportation:

If traveling out of state, we recommend flying directly into the Aspen airport as it’s located about 20 minutes away from Snowmass Village. The Aspen airport is quite small and incredibly easy to navigate. Depending on your accommodations, several hotels also arrange shuttles for pickup from this airport as well. Alternatively, you could fly into Denver, Colorado and make a road trip out of your stay in Snowmass by renting a car. The drive takes about 4 hours one way.

Snowmass village during sunrise

Accommodations:

When we visited Snowmass, we absolutely loved staying at the Limelight Hotel . It is conveniently located right in the heart of Snowmass Village. If you are skiing or snowboarding, it’s about a two minute walk to the closest chairlift and gondola! The rooms were luxurious, comfortable, and clean. The balcony to our room had a beautiful balcony that overlooked the local ice skating rink and the rest of the village. The hotel did an amazing job at maintaining COVID-19 safety protocols and the staff were all incredibly friendly. We loved being able to order some dessert from the hotel restaurant and take a dip in the jacuzzi after a day exploring in the snow.

Things to Do in Snowmass, Colorado:

Activities:.

pyramid peak snowmobile tour

Skiing & Snowboarding

From the several people we chatted with in our stay, everyone agrees that Snowmass is the best and most scenic mountain in the area for skiing and snowboarding. There’s a variety of lifts and runs for all skill levels. There’s also tons of instructors and lessons available, and everytime we were out in the village we were so impressed by how organized the whole process ran!

Snowmobiling

pyramid peak snowmobile tour

By far the highlight of our activities in Snowmass was going Snowmobiling to the Maroon Bells! The Maroon Bells are one of the most beautiful mountain ranges we have ever seen. Once arriving, we could easily see why these bell shaped peaks are the most photographed mountains in North America. The Snowmobiling tour from T-Lazy 7 Ranch itself lasted about 2 hours and took us throughout the gorgeous wilderness area surrounded by aspens and 14ers like Pyramid Peak.

If we could only choose one activity outside of skiing, this would be it. They also offer snowmobile tours to a Klondike Cabin and to Independence Pass if you wanted to explore other routes. The guides were super informative about the area as well. You’ll get a great history lesson of the town! We had no idea that the mountain division for WWII trained throughout the area to fight in the mountains abroad.

Hiking & Snowshoeing

pyramid peak snowmobile tour

Although Snowmass is known for its hiking in the summer, the views during the winter are unparalleled. We hiked the South Rim Trail up to Spiral Point (aka the iconic Yin Yang) and were greeted with panoramic views of the whole village frosted in new powder. The hike is about 2.6 miles round trip but the trail was maintained all the way through even in snow and had plenty of signs to make sure you were on the right path. We would definitely recommend doing this hike at sunrise or sunset to see the town light up during golden hour. Several locals who chatted with us also recommended hiking up near the Buttermilk ski area for beautiful views of the mountains.

pyramid peak snowmobile tour

We also took the ACES guided snowshoeing tour that is sponsored by the Snowmass tourism board as well. It takes you out of Snowmass village via the Nature Trail which was a nice relaxing activity. We would recommend this tour for anyone with kids or any plant and nature enthusiast. The walk is definitely for beginners and they will provide snowshoes for you! It’s also free and you will learn all about the history of the town and other strategies to recognize footprints, wildlife, and types of flowers and trees. This is a great more chill outdoor activity for those looking to enjoy the serenity of the outdoors. If you are looking for some more adrenaline, we would stick to the snowmobiling tour since there are many similarities in the information the guides share in terms of the history of Snowmass and Aspen.

Ice Skating

pyramid peak snowmobile tour

Snowmass has an ice skating rink located in the middle of the village adjacent to the Limelight hotel. They offer free ice skating rentals outside of their Airstream and at the moment you can make a reservation to reserve your time on the rink to allow for social distancing. If you have kids, you can watch them skate while enjoying Apres Ski or happy hour at the surrounding restaurants in The Collective.

Alpine Coaster & Tubing

The Breaktaker Alpine Coaster should be added to everyone’s Snowmass Winter bucket list. Simply purchase your tickets at the store next to the Elk Camp Gondola and head up the Gondola to arrive at the coaster. It’s fun for all ages, including adults, and a fun little thrill to break up a perfect day skiing. The coaster is also conveniently located next to the Elk Camp restaurant so you can grab a bite to eat after riding! You can also purchase tickets to go Tubing up at Elk Camp at the lift ticket office. If you have children, we highly recommend this activity as we saw so many families having an amazing time!

Other Things To Do:

pyramid peak snowmobile tour

Certain nights on the weekends, you can watch the night sky light up in a beautiful fireworks show over Fanny Hill! Watching the fireworks over the snow is a magical experience for all ages.

Because our trip was only 3 days in total, we didn’t get to experience EVERYTHING we wanted to do, but that gives us a great excuse to come back! Next time, we are hoping to test out their dog sledding, which is one of the most popular activities in the area. You can also reserve a guide who will take you out Ice Climbing which is also great for adventurous souls looking for some fun in the winter.

Dining:

Breakfast: .

pyramid peak snowmobile tour

Our first breakfast in Snowmass was spent enjoying a delicious breakfast from JUS . Giselle ordered an acai bowl with orange juice and Stephen got the breakfast burrito and both were delicious and healthy. Also, not to mention the views inside the place or breathtaking! We also had the pleasure of having breakfast in the Limelight Lounge restaurant. There was a buffet selection of everything from pastries, to waffles and hash browns, to yogurt and granola! We loved all of the options and the food was great.

When we first arrived in Snowmass, our first order of business was finding a place to eat. We decided on trying out Venga Venga Cantina and we were not disappointed! The food was amazing! It was one of the best meals during our entire stay. We started off with some of the margaritas and some table side guacamole, which were all made to perfection. We highly recommend the steak tacos and the Chicken Zarape. Beware, though, since the food is so good, you should expect a small wait time to enter since it does get quite busy. The food is definitely worth the wait though and you can explore the rest of the town shops while you wait for your table.

pyramid peak snowmobile tour

We also visited the Crepe Shack in the Base Village for lunch and ordered the Crepe Burger. They have several sweet and savory options, but we really enjoyed our choice! The Crepe Shack is also conveniently located right next to the Ice Skating Rink and the Limelight Hotel. Our last lunch was at the Basecamp Bar and Grill , which is right next to the Gondola and Lift in the Base Village. Service is fast and the food hits perfectly after a morning of being out on the snow. This is the perfect spot for some brews and burgers, and is definitely more of a fun social restaurant outdoors.

Snowmass Smores

After lunch, there are several great spots around The Collective for Apres Ski and Snowmass also hands out s’mores around 3:30pm each day which were such a great snack when exploring around! Stephen loved stopping each day to pick one up.

Dinner:

pyramid peak snowmobile tour

If you are looking for a fancier place to grab a bite for dinner, we highly recommend Toro Kitchen and Lounge at the Viceroy Hotel . The service is fantastic and the wine list, octopus, steak, and salmon were phenomenal. Stephen’s favorite part, however, was dessert. We ordered Mochatinis and had an amazing raspberry cake to finish. We also heard Il Pogio was a great Italian restaurant for dinner.

Our experience in Snowmass made us love winter adventures even more. We can’t wait to make this a recurring trip for us and definitely will be adding it on our summer bucket list as well. We hope you enjoyed our ultimate winter guide to Snowmass, Colorado!

Pyramid Peak, Turnagain Arm

pyramid peak snowmobile tour

Back in Alaska!

Last year, I had an incredible ski trip to Alaska , staying for a week with my friend Brant. This year, Kelly wanted to do the Tour of Anchorage 50k at the beginning of March, so I planned an earlier trip to work with that. I arrived in Anchorage one week before the race to get in some backcountry skiing with Brant. Conditions were definitely different than last time around – still more of a wintry snowpack with lingering weak layers. But at least I arrived with three straight days of sunny weather, which can be a rarity in Anchorage at this time of year.

For our first tour, I really wanted to see Turnagain Arm on a sunny day. This narrow, shallow body of water separates Anchorage and mainland Alaska from the Kenai Peninsula. The Arm is so shallow that it is more mud than water at low tide and a singular wave can move across as the tide is coming in and out. With some weak layer concerns, I suggested that we ski Pyramid Peak. This is a rather obscure peak on the motorized side of the highway. It does not get skied often, but I knew it would offer great views of the water and mellow slopes to ski on.

pyramid peak snowmobile tour

While most Alaskan tours start at closer to 1000-3000 ft above sea level, this tour started at 200 ft! We followed a powerline for a bit before ducking into trees. Forests here are not as easy to move through as our nicely spaced PNW forests, so it understandable that most locals avoid tree skiing at all costs. But it was not too bad and we found open alder slopes at only 600 ft.

pyramid peak snowmobile tour

Pretty quickly, we found the snow to be heavily wind affected. I had hoped that this east aspect would be protected from the strong westerly winds that race down Turnagain Arm, but this was not the case. Nonetheless, the windobard made for quick skinning and I was very stoked to have sunny views of the awesome Alaskan mountains all around.

pyramid peak snowmobile tour

As we crossed the col between the false summit and true summit, we encountered brutal winds. They were suffocating – almost to the point it was challenging to breathe. But luckily the winds eased once we were through this terrain gap.

pyramid peak snowmobile tour

At the summit, we found some old snowmobile tracks, but otherwise, only giant mountains, clouds, sea, and ice. It is incredible how huge the mountains in Alaska look and feel. Pyramid Peak itself is only about 3500 ft tall – the height of Rattlesnake Mountain – but it feels absolutely giant. Call it The Alaska Factor .

pyramid peak snowmobile tour

My favorite view was of Turnagain Arm. It was filled with an intricate network of sea ice. You could see rivers cutting through the ice, creating a beautiful mosaic of water and ice.

pyramid peak snowmobile tour

We debated what to ski, deciding on the gentle south face. The snow looked mostly smooth at least. The top actually turned out to be plenty carveable.

pyramid peak snowmobile tour

The ski quality alternated between decent firm snow and varying degrees of sastrugi, but we figured we would keep going as long as the skiing was not awful. We knew the winds would die down the further we skied, so that was encouraging. Slowly, the skiing began to improve. Below about 1200 ft, we suddenly found boot top powder through gentle alder meadows. The snow just kept getting better, all the way down close to sea level at 300 ft where we ended our run.

pyramid peak snowmobile tour

Down here, we were finally out of the wind. It was peaceful and beautiful, so we took a break to snack. This was a place far from any road that few people probably ever visit. The sun was beginning to kiss the slope and we took our time making our way up to lap the good snow at the bottom.

pyramid peak snowmobile tour

After a second lap, we decided it was time to head home and began the nearly 3000 foot climb back to the ridge. This time, we reversed the snow conditions, from powder to wind effected powder to sastrugi to windboard. It was a pleasant grind, with perfect temperatures in the cold February sun.

pyramid peak snowmobile tour

Atop the false summit, we transitioned one last time and descended back down the east slopes. The snow up high was surprisingly decent, and the views had only gotten clearer and more magnificent since the morning.

pyramid peak snowmobile tour

We were able to stay in downhill mode the entire way out back to the car, with only one short section of tight trees to get through. Brant had to end the day in Alaskan style by bouldering some roadside ice right near the parking.

pyramid peak snowmobile tour

I marveled at Pyramid Peak as we drove back to Anchorage. It felt fitting that my first “Turnagain Day” was not one of the classics actually at Turnagain Pass, but an obscure ski destination way closer to the water! We had low expectations for skiing, but found acceptable conditions and absolutely great views. This Alaskan trip was off to a pretty good start!

pyramid peak snowmobile tour

  • Our tour measured about 12 miles and 7300 ft gain.
  • The approach is pretty simple. Park at the pullout adjacent to the powerline and skin the powerline until it turns left. Then trend up and right through tight trees for a few hundred feet before arriving at more open slopes.
  • The east and west faces of Pyramid look awesome if you have better conditions!
  • This area tends to get more wind than Turnagain Pass proper because wind gets funneled down Turnagain Arm.

Grand Mesa’s Sunlight to Powderhorn Trail

Snowmobiling on the Grand Mesa

Among the numerous snowmobiling gems that Grand Junction has to offer, the sprawling Grand Mesa stands out as the most popular playground for snowmobilers. Just a short 45-minute drive from Downtown Grand Junction stands the Grand Mesa. Its high alpine elevation provides the climate for plenty of fresh powder regularly throughout the winter season. The extensive network includes 800 square miles of groomed trails that wind through pristine forests and open meadows, delivering panoramic views of the surrounding mountains.

The most popular snowmobiling trail on the Grand Mesa is the Sunlight to Powderhorn Trail , or “The SP Trail” for short. This well-groomed trail stretches 123 miles from the Sunlight Ski Area to the Powderhorn Ski Area, making it one of the longest snowmobile trails in the contiguous United States. Several miles of side trails can be explored from The SP Trail, and the main trail is marked with green reflectors to help navigate in winter weather conditions. The Sunlight to Powderhorn Trail has two trailheads, one accessible from the Grand Mesa Visitor Center and the other one off Four Mile Road near Glenwood Springs. Other top areas to try out while on the Grand Mesa are the Bonham, Bull Creek, Cold Sore, and Vega trails, each offering unique challenges and scenery.

Uncompahgre Plateau Trails

The Uncompahgre Plateau and parts of the Uncompahgre National Forest offer miles of both groomed and ungroomed snowmobiling trails the perfect day trip for Grand Junction visitors. This 1.2 million-acre area boasts wide-open spaces and scenic climbs suitable for riders of all experience levels.

The Dave Wood Bypass Trail is a 1.9-mile long trail on the plateau, starting at the Dave Wood Snowmobile Trailhead and ending at Forest Road 402. Fun fact: the Dave Wood Road and trail are named after the man who led Colorado’s largest pioneer freight service, hauling supplies to mining towns. The trail typically opens in December and is used for various winter activities, including cross-country skiing, snowshoeing, and snowmobiling.

Woman on a snowmobile on the Grand Mesa

For a more adventurous and remote ride, embark on the Dry Creek Trail. This less developed groomed trail leads uphill for about 7 miles to Divide Road. Enjoy wintery views along the ride through Dry Creek Canyon’s rock formations, trees, and frozen creek, with the possibility of catching a glimpse of the Grand Mesa in the distance.

White River National Forest Trails

A Few Words About the

This amazing snowmobile tour takes us to the Russian mining town of Pyramiden and will take us back in time. To the time when the city was in full bloom before it was closed down in 1998. At one point around 1000 people were living in Pyramiden. The city is still owned by the Russian company Trust Arktikugol, which also owns Barentsburg. Now, Pyramiden is known as the most northern ghost town.

We drive through snow covered mountains, long valleys, cross glaciers and fjords.  Of course, there are several stops so you have the ideal chance to take the perfect picture

Due to the increasing challenges with respect to the snow and ice conditions we do this trip only a two-day version. This gives us much more time to go for the longer, but safer way. Since this tour has a duration of two days, it offers to us plenty of time to explore the area and fit in many spontaneous stops.

After you have been picked you up from your hotel, and taken to our changing room, we will give you a safety briefing and get you dressed.  Then we will drive to our snowmobiles and show you how to operate them. Since this tour is quite long in different terrain we recommend normal fitness and preferably some snowmobiles experience. We do not recommend this tour with children.

Minimum age for Children is 12 years.

If you have any food allergies or health issues please let us know before the trip.

For our guests who need glasses we recommend switching to contacts, if possible, for the tour.

Remember, our goal is to give you what YOU want, if you have any special wishes for your trip, don’t hesitate to contact us. Personalizing your holiday is what we do best!
