Simply Red announce two rescheduled Brighton Centre concerts
Mick Hucknell of Simply Red
Simply Red have rescheduled their highly anticipated UK and Ireland tour, which includes two must-see shows at the Brighton Centre for February 2022. The tour, originally planned for 2020, comes after the band’s acclaimed 2019 album ‘Blue Eyed Soul’ . The wonderful Mica Paris is special guest on all dates.
Simply Red are hailed as one of the most successful live acts ever to come out of the UK, and for the new tour they will be firing on all cylinders delivering their all-time classic hits from a stellar career, such as ‘ Stars ’ , ‘ Holding Back The Years ’, ‘ Fairground ’ and ‘ Money’s Too Tight To Mention ’, as well as some raw and soulful new grooves.
Mick Hucknall can’t wait to get back onstage. “I’ve spent most of my life going out and singing for people, so it feels strange not to have that.” he said. “I miss being able to express myself. It’s going to be wonderfully inspiring when people can go and see bands again. I can’t wait.”
Simply Red play the following UK and Irish dates. Tickets on sale now from HERE and the tickets for the Brighton Centre concerts can also be purchased directly from the venue HERE .

Mick Hucknall has been Simply Red’s songwriter and bandleader since the very beginning in 1985, aided by long-serving saxophonist Ian Kirkham since 1986. The current line-up has remained consistent since 2003, and the new tour will play to the core strengths of this fantastic band. “I want them to enjoy playing, for crowds to get up and move around, and everybody to put their heart into it. It’s all about capturing the groove”, says Hucknall.
‘Blue Eyed Soul’ was recorded live with few overdubs at British Grove Studios in London. All ten tracks, including the sensational new single ‘ Thinking Of You ’, were written by Mick Hucknall and produced by long-time collaborator Andy Wright. Musical reference points draw on classic funk and soul: Wilson Pickett, Dyke and the Blazers, James Brown, and the roaring horns of Tower of Power. “I’m looking forward to playing it live because it’s real,” says Hucknall of the upcoming record, “I want to have a good time”.
‘Blue Eyed Soul’ is available to order now from HERE and further information on Simply Red can be found HERE .

Simply Red, Brighton Centre gig review: Songs to lose your problems in

Mick Hucknall saves the best for first. Strolling onto a UK stage as Simply Red’s singer for the first time in five years, he strums an acoustic guitar and sings “Holding Back the Years”, his best song. There’s nothing in the way of his voice, or words which allude to the mother who left when he was two and the onward rush of time. Co-written by his Manchester punk bandmate in the Frantic Elevators, Neil Moss, and a hit at the start of the 30-year career celebrated tonight, it inherently carries Hucknall’s past. With just a red-lit curtain behind him, it becomes a dignified taproom lament, something autumnal for old friends and lovers to gather to. It’s a gambit tried at length on 2005’s album of stripped-back favourites, Simplified, but none the worse for that. It’s almost a shame when the band come in.
Elsewhere in Brighton tonight, the Texan singer Josh T. Pearson has just finished music where his own life or death sometimes seem at stake. But that’s never been Simply Red’s way. These are songs to lose your problems in, transmitted by Hucknall’s fine voice, worked on till everything sounds easy. Its light, reliable caress is the legitimate source of sex appeal which mystifies sceptical men. As he showed on his honourably-meant album of Bobby Bland covers, Tribute to Bobby (2008), he has a soul singer’s grain, but none of the grit that makes that music’s pearls. He lacks what black American musicians call church chops: the missing magic isn’t from sounding suburban, which can be interesting, but secular. When he does wordlessly almost rasp on “Do the Right Thing”, it’s only budget Al Green. But then, who isn’t?
As a young man, Hucknall once walked onto a three-inch ledge 30 feet from the ground to prove a point, but this is such careful music. The few asides to the audience sound made to last the whole tour. But his touching pride in sitting in Motown writer Lamont Dozier’s house to write “You’ve Got It” isn’t wholly misplaced, any more than his soul boy past. And Simply Red, for all its notoriously frequent personnel changes, remains capable of tasteful touches of jazz, soul and funk. Kevin Robinson gives a hint of Miles Davis mournfulness on trumpet, while on “Thrill Me” the percussion sound glistens, and Ian Kirkham’s sax gains muscle. Steve Lewinson’s bass sometimes stops songs simply evaporating. Following the boss’s lead, this is music disinclined to break sweat, but as the volume appears to leap for the hit-heavy home straight, it moves many to dance.
The 1985 Valentine Brothers cover which introduced Simply Red, “Money’s Too Tight To Mention”, is played to a backdrop of images of Thatcher and riot police. As apposite as ever, it nods to Hucknall’s early socialist principles. All tonight’s music is true to the values of a happy, wealthy man who values control and contentment, and makes music to match.

Fantastic show worth the trip over from the states. Mick’s voice and performance was just as good as when he was young. We would do it again in a heart beat, wish they’d tour the United States, or maybe do one of the wildly Popular music cruises

Thursday 14th June 2016, Edinburgh Castle. Great gig, Mick's voice is amazing and still as powerful and soulful as ever, Band were also fab. All the best songs, real crowd pleasers - would delicately see them again.
A beautifully played music concert, in a poorly managed commercial scheme:
Music: 10/10
Mick Hucknall has excelled once again, communicating well with the audience, with his great songs, lyrics and his voice still in great shape. The excellent and talented Simply Red band conveys a great deal of emotion with great musical arrangements, all wrapped up in a tight, engaging rhythm, never boring! To top it up, the sound quality was very good, with low distortion and ear-friendly volume levels.
Organization and venue: 3/10
The Citibank Hall and the commercial production team in São Paulo have done an unacceptable job, selling more (expensive) tickets than the place can handle in comfort and security. Parking lot overflowed, blocking Marginal Pinheiros avenue, people took forever to get in/out. Inside the venue, an enormous crowd stood in all entrances and exits, making it impossible to get a drink or go to the restroom and return. Citibank Hall employees ignored it all and didn't move to help organize people or cars. Police and city traffic officials were also absent, or invisible.

The tour, in support of their forthcoming new album Blue Eyed Soul , kicks off on Tuesday 6 October 2020 in Newcastle, and runs through to two huge shows at London’s The O2 on Saturday 24 and Sunday 25 October.
Simply Red will be releasing their funk-inspired new album on 8 November 2019 through BMG. To date, the band have unveiled singles Thinking Of You, BadBootz and the recently revealed Sweet Child .
The band are set to play a mixture of material from their upbeat new album, as well as a selection of hits from their huge back-catalogue, including the likes of Stars , Holding Back The Years , Money’s Too Tight (To Mention) and Fairground .
Simply Red consists of primary songwriter and bandleader Hucknall, as well as long-time saxophonist Ian Kirkham. The band as it now stands has remained constant since 2003.
“I want them to enjoy playing, for crowds to get up and move around, and everybody to put their heart into it,” Mick Hucknall says of the tour. “It’s all about capturing the groove.”
Blue Eyed Soul was recorded as live at British Grove Studios in Chiswick, London. The record’s ten tracks were all written by Mick Hucknall and produced by Andy Wright. For this, their twelfth studio album, Simply Red have drawn on classic funk and soul, listing the likes of Wilson Pickett, Dyke and the Blazers and James Brown as an influence.
Looking towards the live show, Hucknall is preparing to bring a party atmosphere to the nation’s arenas.
“I’m very keen and always have been keen on having the audience participate,” he said, taking time out to speak to Ticketmaster recently. “It’s always a great thrill listening to the audience singing the choruses of some of the biggest hits.”
“That’s what makes for the magic of a live performance is the interaction between the artist and the audience,” he added.
Simply Red released their debut album Picture Book in 1985, featuring iconic hits Holding Back The Years and Money’s Too Tight (To Mention) .
They have released a further ten albums since, including 1991’s 12x Platinum selling Stars , spawning the title-track hit as well as Something Got Me Started and For Your Babies .
Mick Hucknall and co. last released Big Love in 2015, their first studio album since Stay in 2007.
Blue Eyed Soul is set to join the fold on 8 November 2019, with Simply Red following it up with a headline tour in October 2020.
Here are those live dates:
6 October 2020 – Utilita Arena, Newcastle 7 October 2020 – Bonus Arena, Hull 9 October 2020 – SSE Hydro, Glasgow 10 October 2020 – First Direct Arena, Leeds 11 October 2020 – M&S Bank Arena, Liverpool 13 October 2020 – 3Arena, Dublin 16 October 2020 – Resorts World Arena, Birmingham 17 October 2020 – Manchester Arena, Manchester 18 October 2020 – Motorpoint Arena, Nottingham 20 October 2020 – Motorpoint Arena, Cardiff 21 October 2020 – Brighton Centre, Brighton 23 October 2020 – Bournemouth International Centre, Bournemouth 24 October 2020 – The O2, London 25 October 2020 – The O2, London
