The PGA Tour Champions (commonly known as the Champions Tour) is a senior golf tour specifically made for golfers above the age of 50. The Professional Golfers Association officially founded the tour over 40 years ago in 1980.

The beauty of golf is that it ages like fine wine. You’re never too old to play golf! Even if you want to play in a USGA Senior Amateur Championship .

This article goes in-depth about the senior golf tour five major tournaments. It highlights renowned championships, golfer stats, and a few fun facts.  However, for a more detailed review of the PGA TOUR Champions, you’ll want to read our ultimate guide .

Origin & History of the Senior Golf Tour

PGA Tour Champions, senior tour at the En-Joie Golf Club

The Senior PGA Championship has been unofficially active since 1937 as a high-profile tournament. It was exclusive for golfers above the age of 50.

However, in 1978, a profitable tournament between teams of the best senior golfers called the ‘Legends of Golf’ gave birth to the idea of an official senior golf tour.

The PGA formally established the ‘Senior PGA Tour’ in 1980. This senior tour was designed for golfers aged 50 and above to showcase their talent.

The 1980 tour consisted of only four events. For comparison, the 2021 tour consisted of 25 events. A lot has changed over the years!

The total prize money in 1980 was $475,000, which would be worth $1,707,901 today.

The next ten years, from 1980-1990, saw a considerable increase in the popularity of the senior tournament. The 1990 season consisted of thirty-eight official events with four major tournaments.

The entire prize money for the 1990 season was a whopping $17.8 million. In 2022, this prize money would be worth around $40,349,753.63 !

Fun Fact: Lee Trevino won 7 tournaments in the 1990 senior golf tour season. The most during the season.

Evolution of the PGA Tour Champions Name

In 2002, the tour was renamed the ‘Champions Tour’ till the 2015 season. The name PGA Tour Champions was adopted for the 2016 tour and onwards.

Qualifying & Playing on the Senior Golf Tour

Competitors in the senior golf tour have to play multiple tournaments throughout the season. These events are usually played over three rounds or 54 holes.

However, the five major championships of the tour are played over four rounds (72 holes) and have a 36-hole cut. Playing an additional round ensures bringing the best talent to the top of the standings.

Fun Fact: The average male golfer is estimated to hit a 219-yard drive. While the Senior Golf Tour’s average driving distance in 2022 was 282.0 yards . The longest drive of the tour was 308.8 yards by Padraig Harrington.

Senior Tour Age

With age comes wisdom. And the opportunity to qualify for the senior golf tour!

Here are a few requirements to qualify for the PGA Tour Champions:

  • The Senior Tour age requirement is 50 years old minimum.
  • Compete and qualify in the 72-hole Regional Qualifying Stage.
  • All successful qualifiers and exempt players must come in the top 12 of the Final Qualifying Stage between 78 golfers.

Spots in the Senior Golf Tour

Understanding the qualification system of the PGA Tour Champions is complicated, and hardly anyone understands it, according to Bobby Clampett , a professional Golf player, and analyst.

PGA Champions from previous years make up 30 of the 81 players on the field. Another 30 spots are given to players in the top 70 of the PGA Tour and Tour Champions.

The rest of the players include the World Golf Hall of Fame members and winners of previous PGA tours.

Players competing in the qualifying sessions also have a few spots reserved for them.

The 5 Senior Major Golf Championships & Their Winners

The Senior Major championships are a big deal in the tour. The best of the best golfers participate in Majors. Meaning that only players that meet certain criteria are given a spot in the Major tournament.

Major champions have their names go down in history books. This is one of the reasons why golfers praise Major events.

There are five major championships in the PGA Tour Champions. These championships differ from the other tours as they are played over four rounds (as opposed to 3 in the standard events).

Here are the five majors of the PGA Tour Champions, along with their relevant winners.

How to Qualify for the Senior PGA Tour

The Senior PGA Tour is now called the Champions Tour.

Many of the greatest players of all time, including Jack Nicklaus and Tom Watson, have played this tour for golfers 50 and older. To play in such company, you have to survive a tough qualifying process.

Champions Tour Qualifying

Go to the Champions Tour website to download the qualifying application (see references). Along with your application, you must provide a copy of your birth certificate, results from two tournaments held within the last year, and two letters of reference from a Class A PGA pro or a Champions Tour member.

Play in the Regional Qualifying Stage. Unless you are an exempt player, you must compete in the 72-hole qualifying tournament. The number of successful qualifiers is announced during the Regional Qualifying Stage.

Successful qualifiers and exempt players then compete in the Final Qualifying Stage.

The field size in the Final Qualifying Stage is 78 players. All 78 players play 72 holes.

'it's not for me': rory mcilroy shoots down any liv golf speculation, share this article.

While some took his tongue-in-cheek comments last week seriously , Rory McIlroy has set the record straight regarding his interest (or lack thereof) in LIV Golf.

“It’s not for me. I’m too much of a traditionalist,” McIlroy said in an interview with ESPN . “I love winning golf tournaments and looking at the trophy and seeing that Sam Snead won this trophy or Ben Hogan or Gene Sarazen or Jack Nicklaus or Gary Player, Tiger Woods or Nick Faldo, whoever it is, the people that came before me. That to me is a big deal in our game. If we were to all put our heads together and be like, ‘Okay, what can we do to all come back together and move forward and be a little more cohesive?’ Then I would sort of be for that.”

At last week’s Cognizant Classic in The Palm Beaches, McIlroy was asked about some comments made by Andrew “Chubby” Chandler, McIlroy’s former manager. Chandler insinuated McIlroy’s softened stance on Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund being involved in pro golf could be a sign he’s ready to take his talents to LIV, and when asked about the comments, McIlroy couldn’t help but smile and laugh.

“I think he’s writing a book, so there is that. I spoke to Chubby, might have saw him in the Middle East at the start of the year. Never know. He might know a few things. Who knows,” McIlroy quipped at the time .

Over the last two years, the Northern Irishman has been outspoken against the PIF and LIV Golf. But over the last few months, McIlroy has admitted to being too harsh on the players who left and has said he wishes LIV players would be involved in the Ryder Cup . He has even “accepted reality” the PIF could be involved in the newly-created PGA Tour Enterprises, the for-profit golf entity that was originally supposed to comprise the PGA Tour and PIF before the Tour made a deal with an outside investment group , the Strategic Sports Group.

His feelings on the PIF’s involvement in pro golf may have changed, but his thoughts on LIV certainly have not.

Jay Monahan, Tiger Woods on new PGA Tour Enterprises board

In a move that perhaps strengthens Jay Monahan's future with the PGA Tour and ensures that Tiger Woods will have an increased role in shaping the future of the tour, both men were named to the 13-member board of directors of the newly formed PGA Tour Enterprises on Wednesday.

Woods, a 15-time major champion, joined the PGA Tour's policy board for the first time in August. He will serve as vice chairman of the board of PGA Tour Enterprises, which will lead all commercial activities related to the PGA Tour and will "focus on fan engagement and growth, as well as developing new media, sponsorship and commercial opportunities," the tour said in a statement.

Monahan, who is in his eighth year as PGA Tour commissioner, will serve as CEO of PGA Tour Enterprises. The tour said a chairman would be selected at a future meeting.

Monahan has been heavily criticized for the tour's lack of transparency before it struck a surprising deal June 6 to form a strategic partnership with Saudi Arabia's Public Investment Fund (PIF) and the DP World Tour. Most players, including player directors on the policy board, didn't learn of the deal until it was announced.

The framework agreement with the PIF expired Dec. 31 and was extended as negotiations continue. The PIF has financed the rival LIV Golf League the past three years.

Monahan, the PGA Tour's fourth commissioner, helped secure a potential $3 billion investment from Strategic Sports Group (SSG), a consortium of billionaire owners of sports teams led by Fenway Sports Group. Under the terms of the deal announced Jan. 31, SSG will make an initial investment of $1.5 billion into PGA Tour Enterprises with the possibility of another $1.5 billion coming later. The PGA Tour will control the for-profit company.

Monahan also will become a voting member on the newly expanded 14-person policy board, the tour said.

"Today's announcement is another milestone for our organization, as I believe we have arrived at a PGA Tour Enterprise's Board of Directors with the right composition, expertise and balance necessary to take our organization into the future," Monahan said in a statement.

"Our current and former players will provide essential insight into our members' priorities and needs. And we welcome key SSG members to the leadership team, whose exceptional track records and achievements in global professional sports will lend a wealth of knowledge into the opportunities ahead for the PGA Tour. Their expertise will undoubtedly play a pivotal role in the success and growth of our commercial initiatives."

Woods is among six PGA Tour policy board player directors who will simultaneously serve on the PGA Tour Enterprises board. The others are Patrick Cantlay , Peter Malnati , Adam Scott , Webb Simpson and Jordan Spieth .

Former PGA Tour pro Joe Ogilvie will join both boards and will serve as a director liaison. Policy board independent director Joe Gorder also will be on the PGA Tour Enterprises board.

Fenway Sports Group principal owner John W. Henry, Atlanta Falcons owner Arthur Blank, New York Mets vice chairman Andrew B. Cohen and Boston Red Sox president and CEO Sam Kennedy will represent SSG on the PGA Tour Enterprises board.

"Our role on the Enterprises board will focus on hearing player director ideas and working alongside them to ensure the sport's commercial growth occurs in a way that creates the best possible product for fans," Henry said in a statement. "All of us at Strategic Sports Group see a bright future for the PGA Tour and the constitution of the Enterprises Board is an important first step in realizing that future."

How to livestream PGA Tour golf: Your options, explained (plus 2024 schedule)

T he 2024 PGA Tour is in full bloom, as the top male golfers compete on some of the world's most storied golf courses. Early in the season, Scottie Scheffler,  Xander Schauffele  and  Rory McIlroy  have already established themselves at the  top of the leaderboard , with  Jon Rahm  and  Viktor Hovland  nipping at their cleats.

Figuring out how to watch and stream each tournament can prove as difficult as trying to outshoot Scheffler. While we can't help you with your golf game, we can take the guesswork out of finding out how to watch every golf tournament on the 2024 PGA Tour.

What network carries the 2024 PGA Tour

The 2024 PGA Tour will broadcast live on Golf Channel, CBS, NBC and ESPN. The PGA Tour will stream on ESPN+ and the live TV streaming services listed below. Not every channel will air every event.

CBS broadcasts an average of 20 weekend events per PGA Tour season, while NBC broadcasts weekend coverage of the PGA Tour for an average of 10 events each season. Golf Channel broadcasts early-round and morning weekend coverage of all PGA Tour events -- as well as weekend events not covered on broadcast TV. Golf Channel also carries primetime replays of all PGA Tour events.

The final three tournaments of the FedEx Cup playoffs alternate each year between CBS and NBC.

How to watch the 2024 PGA Tour without cable

If you don't have a cable subscription, or your cable coverage doesn't include NBC or CBS, ESPN+ streams every PGA Tour event of the 2024 season. You can also stream NBC-aired tournaments on Peacock and CBS-aired tournaments on Paramount+, or catch the live feed of network coverage through one of the live TV streaming platforms featured below.

Packages include CBS, CBS Sports Network, Fox, NBC, ESPN, ESPN2, FS1, FS2, NFL Network and more, so you'll be able to watch more than just PGA Tour golf this season, all without a cable subscription.

Sports fans will want to consider adding on the $7.99 per month Fubo Extra package, which includes MLB Network, NBA TV, NHL Network, Tennis Channel, SEC Network and more channels. Or upgrade to the Fubo Elite tier and get all the Fubo Extra channels, plus the ability to stream in 4K.

To watch the 2024 PGA Tour without cable, start a seven-day free trial of Fubo. You can begin watching immediately on your TV, phone, tablet or computer. Note: CBS Essentials and Paramount+ are both subsidiaries of Paramount.

Start watching Paramount+ free on Amazon Prime Video

Paramount+ content, including live sports, is available to stream on  Amazon Prime  via a Paramount+ with Showtime on Prime Video add-on subscription. The Orange +  Blue Tier plan normally costs $60 per month, but the streamer is currently offering a 50% off promotion for your first month, so you'll pay just $30. For anyone living in partially blocked-off area (those near mountains or first-floor apartments), a  digital TV antenna  may not pick up a good signal -- or any signal at all. But for many homes, a digital TV antenna provides a seriously inexpensive way to watch the 2024 PGA Tour without paying a cable company. Indoor TV antennas can also provide some much-needed TV backup if a storm knocks out your cable.

This amplified digital antenna with a 300-mile range can receive hundreds of HD TV channels, including ABC, CBS, NBC, PBS, FOX, Univision and can filter out cellular and FM signals. It delivers a high-quality picture in 1080p HDTV, top-tier sound and features an 18-foot digital coax cable.

LeBron James and Drake Make a Big Bet on the PGA Tour

The basketball star and rapper are investing in the professional golf competition, marking their latest push into sports.

By Andrew Ross Sorkin ,  Ravi Mattu ,  Bernhard Warner ,  Sarah Kessler ,  Michael J. de la Merced ,  Lauren Hirsch and Ephrat Livni

LeBron James, dressed in a yellow Los Angeles Lakers jersey, receives a congratulatory pat on the shoulder from the rapper Drake.

Golf’s new power players

Just over a month ago, a group of financiers and sports team owners, led by Fenway Sports Group, said it would invest up to $3 billion in the PGA Tour, a watershed deal that gave players equity in the league as it fends off competition from the Saudi-backed LIV Golf.

What wasn’t reported then was that several powerful people in sports, music and entertainment had also invested personally. Two names are likely to draw attention: LeBron James, the superstar basketball player, and Drake, the rapper.

The investors are bringing more than money. F.S.G. and fellow backers, including the billionaires Steve Cohen, Arthur Blank and Marc Lasry, believe they can help reinvigorate the sport, particularly as the value of media rights soars. James and Drake are committing additional capital as “strategic investors,” and are expected to use their marketing power to help the tour broaden its audience. James and the PGA Tour commissioner, Jay Monahan, were at the home of Tom Werner, F.S.G.’s chairman, recently discussing just that, DealBook hears.

Fans may see the stars around the greens, perhaps in the same way Drake is a frequent courtside presence at Toronto Raptors games. “Golf can be so much more than a sport. I remember some of my best childhood memories was being on the golf course with my uncle,” Drake said in a statement to DealBook. “It’s one thing to invest in a team, but to help reimagine one of the biggest leagues in the world is an incredible opportunity and I’m excited to be a part of it.”

James and Drake aren’t new to sports investing. In 2021, James took a stake in F.S.G. — he’s actually named in the small print as an F.S.G. investor in a news release announcing the $3 billion deal — which owns the Boston Red Sox and Liverpool F.C. James’s investment is separate from F.S.G.’s involvement.

In 2022, James and Drake also invested in A.C. Milan , the Italian soccer club, alongside RedBird Capital Partners and the owners of the New York Yankees.

Here are other previously unidentified PGA Tour investors: The actor Chris Pratt; James’s business partner, Maverick Carter, and the player’s agent, Rich Paul; Jeremy Zimmer, the C.E.O. of United Talent Agency; and Steve Stoute, the founder of UnitedMasters and a longtime record and marketing executive.

The man behind the investments is Paul Wachter. The Los Angeles-based financial adviser-turned-investor runs Main Street Advisors, and has been involved in many celebrity and athlete-driven businesses including Beats by Dre and NTWRK’s purchase last month of Complex.

HERE’S WHAT’S HAPPENING

Apple is fined €1.8 billion ($2 billion) over music streaming. The E.U.’s competition regulator accused the tech giant of violating antitrust rules by preventing developers from informing consumers about alternative music services like Spotify. The decision is the first time the iPhone maker has been punished for breaching E.U. law, and comes after Spotify filed a complaint against Apple in 2019.

Oil prices tick up slightly after OPEC members’ latest move. Brent crude, the international benchmark, yo-yoed only a little this morning after Saudi Arabia and other top producers said they would continue to limit their output through June. The announcement was meant to prop up slumping oil prices hit by tepid global demand.

New polls deliver more bad news for President Biden on the economy. The latest survey by The Times and Siena College, which shows him trailing Donald Trump by five percentage points, shows that a majority of Americans think the economy is in poor condition . In a poll by The Wall Street Journal, nearly a third of respondents felt that economic conditions had improved during the past two years — but a large majority believed inflation was still too high.

An investor group raises its takeover bid for Macy’s. Arkhouse Management and Brigade Capital Management increased their offer to $24 a share , up 14 percent and valuing the retailer at $6.6 billion. It’s unclear whether that’s enough to bring Macy’s to the negotiating table; the department store chain recently introduced its own turnaround strategy .

ICYMI: The billionaire debate about A.I.

Elon Musk tore open a rift in the technology world last week when he sued OpenAI and its C.E.O., Sam Altman.

That fight is about more than breach-of-contract allegations . It’s about the future of the technology — and other Silicon Valley insiders have aired their philosophical disagreements.

A reminder of Musk’s argument: OpenAI, which he helped fund for several years, was created as a nonprofit that would release its innovations to the public. He now accuses the organization of violating that principle when it built a for-profit arm. The final straw was Microsoft’s multibillion-dollar investment in that division that gave it an exclusive license to innovations like GPT-4.

Not everyone agrees with Musk. OpenAI executives disputed his claims, telling employees that they “do not reflect the reality of our work or mission.” And the venture capitalist Vinod Khosla, an investor in OpenAI, criticized Musk :

You jumped in early but didn’t stay committed. And real progress needed real funding. Many non-profits own for profit efforts.

Musk pushed back . But so, too, did Marc Andreessen, another OpenAI investor who supported Musk and responded that Khosla “is lobbying to ban open source .” That led to an interesting debate between Andreessen and Khosla about the dangers of rapidly advancing A.I. and whether it should be nationalized

Speaking of A.I. and the public good: Forty-five companies and tech executives have signed an open letter pledging to ensure that their work benefits humanity, DealBook is first to report. (The letter was planned before Musk’s lawsuit.)

From the letter, which was organized by the veteran investor Ron Conway:

While AI is unique in directly augmenting human thought, we expect its impact to be more akin to the printing press, the combustion engine, electricity, and the Internet. The balance of its good and bad impacts on humans will be shaped through the actions and thoughtfulness we as humans exercise. It is our collective responsibility to make choices that maximize AI’s benefits and mitigate the risks, for today and for future generations.

Others who signed include OpenAI, Meta, Google and Microsoft; the A.I. start-up Mistral; and the investors Coatue, Tim Draper and Khosla.

Music enters the “post-streaming” era

The fight between Universal Music Group and TikTok looks like a rerun of the streaming wars of the file-sharing era, pitting the music majors against a formidable digital force.

But some in the industry believe a move by the world’s biggest music company to pull its artists’ work off the platform could have even more profound consequences. And the specter of artificial intelligence looms over it all.

Here’s what the fight is about: Universal says TikTok should pay more to license its songs because the platform has become so big that it’s effectively underpaying, relative to its peers. The music company also wants TikTok to do more to protect its artists, like Taylor Swift and Drake, from the A.I. threat.

TikTok says Universal is jeopardizing its artists’ future by taking them off a giant platform for marketing and music discovery, especially for emerging singers .

Talks have hit a wall. Shou Chew, TikTok’s C.E.O., and other executives’ efforts to restart negotiations reportedly failed. The Universal boss, Lucian Grainge, doubled down on his warnings during an earnings call last week, saying there should be no “free rides” for TikTok.

What happens matters to the entire industry. TikTok is the top platform where young consumers, especially teenagers, find new music, according to MIDiA Research. TikTok is also transforming the music business, building what MIDiA calls the “post-streaming era,” defined by the rise of A.I. and the “consumer-creator.”

A.I. is a potential existential threat for the music labels. Universal says TikTok is being “flooded” with A.I.-generated music. As the platform embraces user-generated content, that issue has become a sticking point in talks.

TikTok wants royalties to be shared with fans, and Universal rejects that idea outright, according to The Financial Times. “A.I. will also allow social users — and even the platforms themselves — to simply spin up their own A.I.-generated music for posts, rather than using music created by human artists,” Tatiana Cirisano, an analyst at MIDiA, told DealBook. “I do understand why these developments are stoking labels’ fears.”

The pre -wedding party of the year

Tech billionaires including Mark Zuckerberg and Bill Gates. Wall Street heavyweights like Larry Fink. Rihanna and Bollywood stars galore.

Those were among the V.I.P.s — a list that also included prime ministers, royalty and figures like Jared and Ivanka Kushner — who flew to Gujarat, India. They were there for this past weekend’s pre-wedding bash to toast Rhadika Merchant and Anant Ambani, the son of Mukesh Ambani, the head of Reliance Industries and Asia’s richest man.

Rihanna performed a lengthy set. (She reportedly was paid millions .) But the three-day extravaganza was a mere taste of things to come: The actual wedding is set for July.

The week ahead

It’s a busy week with payrolls, primaries, the State of the Union address and crucial policymaking meetings in China. Here’s what to watch.

Tuesday: It’s Super Tuesday. Voters head to the polls in 15 states, including California, Texas and North Carolina. The big question: Could this be Nikki Haley’s last stand?

Elsewhere, China’s “Two Sessions” conference begins in Beijing. Investors will be watching for an official 2024 G.D.P. target and any signs of policy moves to kick-start the economy.

Wednesday: Jay Powell, the Fed chair, is scheduled to begin two days of testimony on Capitol Hill. He’s expected to stress that there’s no urgent need to cut interest rates .

Thursday: President Biden is set to deliver his State of the Union address. In addition to talking up his economic accomplishments, he is expected to call for lower health care costs and higher taxes on corporations and the rich.

Friday: It’s jobs day. Economists have forecast that employers added 190,000 jobs last month, a big fall from last month. A reminder: The January report was a stunner, with the payroll figure coming in well above Wall Street’s estimates.
