For those truly epic, once-in-a-lifetime destinations, you want to leave your itinerary to the experts. Whether your dream is to see the Big Five on an African Safari, trek tall mountains, explore European cities, or something even wilder, a group tour is the easiest way to do it.

However, picking the wrong group tour company is the quickest way to ruin your trip. Make sure you choose a tour company that aligns with your goals and travel styles. Do you want an intimate group tour or do you prefer to make lots of new friends in a big group? Does the price line up with what you like (luxury vs. budget)? Is the itinerary going to all the places you want to see?

We’ve done the research and found the very best group travel tour companies for 2023 for every type of traveler.

Best Overall Group Travel: Exodus Travels

Images of nature around the mountains and lakes of Slovenia as seen on the Exodus Travels' Lakes and Mountains of Slovenia walking tour

With trips on every continent, Exodus Travels covers anywhere on this planet that you could possibly want to go, from popular destinations like the Amalfi Coast to well off-the-beaten path adventures like Tajikistan. This award-winning group travel company boasts thousands of repeat customers who sign up for trips year after year (97% of past participants would recommend Exodus Travels to a friend).

These small group tours operate with only around 12-16 people, and always feature experienced local leaders who can give you a unique insight into your destination. Exodus Travels caters to any type of travel style, including trips broken down by type of activity (think walking, cycling, multi-adventure, winter, or cultural) as well as type of traveler (family, age group, etc.). There are curated collections (coastal, “away from it all”, European wilderness, and trips of a lifetime) to inspire you, as well as self-guided options for when you want all the benefits of a group tour planner without the actual group. Looking for that special safari? Exodus Travels just partners with the African Wildlife Foundation to create carefully curated luxury adventures that go above and beyond the standard safari.

Exodus Travels tours work for almost any budget, with options that range from affordable to premium.

Top Trip: Explore under-the-radar Europe by foot on Exodus Travels’ Lakes & Mountains of Slovenia walking tour .

A Taste of the Sweet Life in Slovenia

Best Adventure Group Travel: World Expeditions

Groups of hikers walking and camping around the mountains of Kilimanjaro with World Expeditions

World Expeditions has been taking adventurous travelers to remote locations all over the world ever since its first group trek through Nepal in 1975. Today, World Expeditions offers active itineraries on every continent. Intrepid travelers can opt for trips themed around mountaineering, rafting, cycling, hiking, and more.

World Expeditions aims to leave communities and places where they operate tours better than they found them. Trips are created using the company’s Thoughtful Travel Charter as a guideline, which emphasizes respect for the environment, sustainability, having a positive impact on local communities, protecting wildlife, and more.

World Expeditions’ trips are capped at just 16 people to provide a good experience for participants, and there are no single supplements for solo travelers willing to share a room with someone of the same gender.

Top Trip: Summit Africa’s tallest mountain on a fully-supported trek up Kilimanjaro on World Expeditions’ eight day trip up the beautiful Lemosho Route .

Best Budget Group Travel: G Adventures

People visiting famous sites around China with the G Adventures' China Express group travel tour

For travelers on a budget, G Adventures offers cheap group tours that make dream destinations accessible to nearly anyone. (Think: sailing the Galapagos for just $1,124 , criss-crossing India’s Golden Triangle for $559 , or spending 8 days in Bali for less than $800.)

G Adventures is one of the best tour companies for solo travelers as well, as most trips don’t have a single-supplement. You can choose to share a room with another G Adventures solo traveler, or pay extra to have your own space.

G Adventures keeps costs down by opting for cheaper hotels and local meals, and making certain activities optional (for an additional cost). Pick your travel style—options range from “basic” to more luxe tours run in partnership with National Geographic. Family tours, local living tours (featuring homestays), and wellness-focused tours are also available.

Top Trip: G Adventures’ China Express trip is a great way to see the highlights of China if you’re short on both time and budget.

The 15 Best Tour Operators in 2022

These are the companies Travel + Leisure readers trust to provide them with travel expertise and memorable experiences.

tourists tour agency

Note: If you’re looking for our most recent recommendations, check out the 2023 list of our favorite tour operators .

When it comes to an itinerary, Travel + Leisure readers want more than a string of photo opportunities — and the right tour operator makes all the difference in creating a trip of a lifetime versus one that simply checks off a list of sights. This year, our readers were especially drawn to companies that utilize local expertise and experience to thoughtfully design trips that will entertain as well as inspire.

Every year for our World's Best Awards survey , T+L asks readers to weigh in on travel experiences around the globe — to share their opinions on the top hotels, resorts, cities, islands, cruise ships, spas, airlines, and more. Readers rated tour operators and safari outfitters based on their staff and guides, itineraries and destinations, activities, accommodations, food, and overall value.

The top picks were noted for their deep knowledge of destinations and guides who "go the extra mile." One reader who has been traveling for more than five decades said a trip with Classic Journeys (No. 2) was the "very best" they had experienced. Others noted attention to pandemic safety details, while one who went to Norway was charmed by a "wonderful surprise dinner in Bergen out on the water that was fantastic."

Tour operators that seamlessly navigated the logistics of a trip also came out on top. Quasar Expeditions (No. 9) was noted "for really planning out every detail" so that "all you have to do is show up and have a great time." Meanwhile, of TCS World Travel (No. 10), a guest said: "You never lift a finger and just spend your time actually exploring the destination." They even added that they "learned so much" along the way.

Among the five companies on this year's list that weren't on last year's were two women-only tour operators that cater to travelers of all ages. AdventureWomen (No. 14) has multiday tours designed by women from Bhutan to Yellowstone National Park, while Explorer Chick (No. 15) has everything from day trips — like glassblowing in Baltimore and cave rappelling in St. Louis — to full itineraries in Machu Picchu and the Galápagos. One reader said her Everest Base Camp trip with AdventureWomen was filled with "like-minded women" who "bonded so well," while another said she felt it was a "safe tour group for women."

No matter which tour they chose, readers were most taken by the people they met along the way, as one said of Trek Travel (No. 13): "By the end of the trip, a group of strangers felt like longtime friends." Find out which other companies round out the list of the best tour operators below.

1. DuVine Cycling + Adventure Co.

A tour with DuVine goes far beyond just riding a bike — it's a way to really see the character of a destination. Case in point: even those who say they're not necessarily cycling fans have been converted. That's part of what helped the tour operator — which runs trips in Europe, the U.S., Latin America, and Africa — skyrocket from No. 14 last year to this year's top spot. Its "top-notch biking equipment" and "challenging but doable itineraries" didn't hurt either. One reader was especially taken by a guide picking figs off of a local tree in Puglia for an extra energy boost during a tough climb, as well as another guide singing to the group after dinner. As another reader put it simply: "They exceed your expectations."

Moscow Metro

The Moscow Metro Tour is included in most guided tours’ itineraries. Opened in 1935, under Stalin’s regime, the metro was not only meant to solve transport problems, but also was hailed as “a people’s palace”. Every station you will see during your Moscow metro tour looks like a palace room. There are bright paintings, mosaics, stained glass, bronze statues… Our Moscow metro tour includes the most impressive stations best architects and designers worked at - Ploshchad Revolutsii, Mayakovskaya, Komsomolskaya, Kievskaya, Novoslobodskaya and some others.

What is the kremlin in russia?

The guide will not only help you navigate the metro, but will also provide you with fascinating background tales for the images you see and a history of each station.

And there some stories to be told during the Moscow metro tour! The deepest station - Park Pobedy - is 84 metres under the ground with the world longest escalator of 140 meters. Parts of the so-called Metro-2, a secret strategic system of underground tunnels, was used for its construction.

During the Second World War the metro itself became a strategic asset: it was turned into the city's biggest bomb-shelter and one of the stations even became a library. 217 children were born here in 1941-1942! The metro is the most effective means of transport in the capital.

There are almost 200 stations 196 at the moment and trains run every 90 seconds! The guide of your Moscow metro tour can explain to you how to buy tickets and find your way if you plan to get around by yourself.

Fun facts from our Moscow Metro Tours:

From the very first days of its existence, the Moscow Metro was the object of civil defense, used as a bomb shelter, and designed as a defense for a possible attack on the Soviet Union.

At a depth of 50 to 120 meters lies the second, the coded system of Metro-2 of Moscow subway, which is equipped with everything you need, from food storage to the nuclear button.

According to some sources, the total length of Metro-2 reaches over 150 kilometers.

The Museum was opened on Sportivnaya metro station on November 6, 1967. It features the most interesting models of trains and stations.

Coffee Ring

The first scheme of Moscow Metro looked like a bunch of separate lines. Listen to a myth about Joseph Stalin and the main brown line of Moscow Metro.

Zodiac Metro

According to some astrologers, each of the 12 stops of the Moscow Ring Line corresponds to a particular sign of the zodiac and divides the city into astrological sector.

Astrologers believe that being in a particular zadiac sector of Moscow for a long time, you attract certain energy and events into your life.

Paleontological finds

Red marble walls of some of the Metro stations hide in themselves petrified inhabitants of ancient seas. Try and find some!

  • Every day each car in  Moscow metro passes  more than 600 km, which is the distance from Moscow to St. Petersburg.
  • Moscow subway system is the  5th in the intensity  of use (after the subways of Beijing, Tokyo, Seoul and Shanghai).

Embarking on the "Jungle Hikes & Island Nights" group journey from Bangkok to Singapore was an adventure of a lifetime, magnificently organized and flawlessly executed. From start to finish, the expedition was a resounding success, thanks to impeccable planning and an itinerary that promised—and delivered—an extraordinary experience. The locations we explored were nothing short of spectacular, offering us a diverse palette of experiences that ranged from the serenity of lush jungles to the vibrant nightlife on picturesque islands. The balance between exhilarating hikes and lively parties was just right, ensuring that every day was filled with new adventures and opportunities to create lasting memories. A significant part of this trip's charm was the fantastic group of fellow travelers I had the fortune to journey with. It's rare to find such a harmonious blend of personalities and backgrounds, but we clicked instantly, transforming a group of strangers into lifelong friends. The camaraderie that developed amongst us added a whole new layer of enjoyment to the experience. A special shoutout is deserved for our CEO, Fon, whose expertise, passion, and warm personality made her not just a guide, but a true friend. Her dedication to ensuring that we all had an incredible time was evident in every aspect of the trip. Fon, you are a gem, and your efforts were genuinely appreciated by all of us! However, no adventure is without its lessons. The pace of the tour, while exhilarating, sometimes felt a bit rushed. Extending the itinerary by a day or two could provide a more relaxed pace, allowing for some much-needed rest days amidst the action-packed schedule. For travelers like myself, towering over 185cm, be prepared for a squeeze, especially on the night trains which proved to be quite the challenge. An additional note for future adventurers: consider booking an extra night in Singapore to fully explore the wonders this city has to offer. The tour's conclusion in Singapore feels like just the beginning of another adventure waiting to be discovered. In summary, the "Jungle Hikes & Island Nights" trip from Bangkok to Singapore was an unforgettable journey filled with incredible sights, sounds, and experiences. While there's room for minor adjustments, the overall experience was profoundly impactful, leaving us with memories to cherish for a lifetime. To those seeking adventure, camaraderie, and a touch of magic, this journey comes highly recommended.
This trip gives a well paced overview of central North Thailand. G Adventure organized the trip well and their travel manager Sek was amazing.

This tour was a disappointment and I would not recommend it. Very poor hotels with no hot water, mouldy bathrooms, the rooms/ bathrooms were not clean (one of them was evident that the toilet has not been cleaned). All the transfers were arranged but we almost got lost on our way to the overnight train due to very poor communication from the team leader. We got food poisoning from one of the pack lunches provided and we are still feeling unwell and struggling days after finishing the tour. It seemed that Becca, our tour guide was there to drink, smoke, flirt with the single guys in the group (and she actually pushed one of them to a dark street while drunk) and gossip with the girls. She was unprofessional and her communication skills were close to none - We never knew the plan for the day and what was happening. The day when several people on the group felt unwell, Becca was only concerned about the dinner reservation and we had to "follow the itinerary" and she never checked on how people were- some of them spent a day or two in their rooms as they felt so unwell. It felt we were being pressured to go to expensive restaurants when meals were not included with Becca constantly harrassing us saying that we had to follow the itinerary. It was evident that the meals that were included in the tour were basic (and gave us food poisoning) and when we were paying we were taken to expensive hotels to eat. We were expecting to see Thailand and it's culture but we had a tour guide who had no knowledge about Thailand and seemed overwhlemed about crossing the road and was unable to organise simple tasks. Instead we got on a tour that was about drinking and partying. We won't use Intro travel ever again and we won't recommend it to anyone.
I had the best time, the places we went to were incredible as well as all the activities that were included. Our tour leader, Adam, was amazing. He brought so much energy and knew so much about the places we visited with loads of interesting facts. I would really recommend this trip!

This was my first trip with Tru Travels and first ever group tour in general and I had the best time! Can’t thank Mickey enough for making sure we were all happy, going above and beyond to provide all the information we needed and making sure we had the time of our lives even through the lows. You can tell he really loves his job and is somehow always happy! I loved the combination of doing the north and south of Thailand, there was always a good balance of having lots of activities to do and things to see as well being able to wind down and relax. I’ll never forget my time in Thailand and all the amazing people I got to meet! Would 100% book another tour with Tru Travels.
Taro our tour guide was first class. Made the trip for me and my son can’t praise him high enough. Miss communication with admin and me in emails regarding which hotels we would be staying in on the trip were an issue at the beginning of the tour which I wasnt happy about. The tour itself was great. Once in a life time trip for us

I booked the 15 day Thailand group tour and had one of the best experiences of my life! I specifically chose this tour as it covered a lot of the key places including Chiang Mai and Pai in the North which actually turned out to be my two favourite places! I decided to book with Feel Free after having a half hour call with one of the founders Adam where all my questions about the tour was answered thoroughly and honestly! I personally don’t drink and go out but this tour is great if you do like to drink and party or don’t! I loved that everything was optional and no one was pressured to do anything they didn’t want to do! I’d join most of the group dinners and on the couple nights there were nights out I did my own thing! The tour is jam packed with lots of different activities day to day, can be a lot but definitely worth it! The itinerary is so carefully thought out and I experienced a number of activities I never thought I’d try! My group leader Jamie was also great! She was very attentive to everyone and their needs and how they were feeling. I really appreciated the little things like her being on call if I had any questions when I was out doing my own thing, waking up pretty early to make sure I got picked up to be taken to the extra Muay Thai class I decided to go to, carrying my suitcase at times when she didn’t need to, taking pictures and videos whilst we were enjoying the moment etc. I also liked the balance of having free time to do our own thing, especially when it can be overwhelming at times for some people to constantly be around a group of people. I also met some incredibly amazing and inspiring people on this tour who I’m so grateful to have met! Everyone was super lovely, sweet and caring and will never forget the amazing experiences and memories I made with everyone! The group was mixed with both introverted and extroverted people but everyone got on so well and made a conscious effort to get to know everyone! Overall one of the best experiences ever, thank you Feel Free for the best 15 days of my life!
What a trip of a lifetime and memories I will treasure forever! My tour guides in Thailand were Tia and Charlotte (Tia being the main guide and it was also her first tour and she was a natural!) Instantly I felt so comfortable and looked after. Solo travelling can be quite daunting but I felt so at ease. The accommodation, activities and everything included were amazing and so worth the money. For my Vietnam trip I had Jack and Gabs (Jack being the main tour guide) and their vibes were impeccable. Feel Free do know how to choose their guides!! It was well organised, we were constantly given updates and told everything we needed to know about where we were going and our plans for our next travels. I have made friends for life on these trips and would recommend to anyone who wants to go travelling but doesn’t want to worry about where to go/doing it by themselves. It was a stress free experience and you really do get to see so much in just 29 days. I can confirm I have the travel bug and this has given me the confidence to go solo travelling again in the future :) thank you to all the amazing people and guides who have made this the best trip ever!!!!

Pleasant. Don’t expect any sailing, it’s motorboat catered for tourists who want to relax, suntan and read a book and eat lots of good food. The wind wasn’t always there to be true but even when it was we had a scheduled tour so not many tourists were up for it so captain has to follow itinerary. It’s a bit sad as the boat crew are all very seasoned sailors who just make a nice little cruise for the middle aged. It’s 2 and 1/2 days not 4 as advertised. Main company is Intrepid and they have so many safety rules, makes you feel like a child in a holiday camp. I had a good time but definitely I’d like to try a proper sailing boat next time.
With great sadness I have to write this review in order to protect other naive and tolerant tourists. The organization and handling of the tour was disturbing, abusive and inappropriate. We have just completed 3 indochina tours with 3 different operators. Interpid failed in every category and ruined our holiday. Everything from safety, transportation, meals, hotels, guides and content was a failure. Greed and luck of common sense prevailed. Safety: disregard for our health and wellbeing: obscure public transportation in covid, bird flue times using buses without Hepa filters, dirty and stinking of old urine. Senior citizens forced to drag laguage via high sidewalks, pt holes, busy streets in the middle of the night and spending almost 3 days traveling on buses!! Nothing to see along highways. Your office misleading and lying about the length of travels. Your (5hrs) is in fact (8hrs, 20 min without any obstacles on the road) Booking bus for ungodly hours and making us sit and wait for the room after very long ,tiring trip on dirty, stinking bus and denying us breakfast, not making arrangements to get us breakfast boxes! Guide lying to operator about us having breakfast!. Arjan did not make any arrangements. Nobody new anything when group showed up. We were told that she was just following Interpid arrangements. How horryfing that you would allow yourself to treat us with such disrespectful abusive way. Hotels: cheap, usually china town, dirty and uncomfortable beds, and pillows. Bayview hotel rooms were horrific with 10 cm of dirt around walls, smelling of vomit and old stinge. The only decent hotel was in Singapore. Meals: virtually nonexistent. The horrible meal Interpid bought at filthy food market in Kuala Lumpur was shameful! Cost you may be 20 dol for 12 people?? Majority was afraid to eat and went hungry, others had gastrointestinal problems after eating in this dirty place. You saved money at the expense of our health! Your guides can not speak proper english to provide information. It was useless to have them, we learned nothing from them so we did not know what we were looking at.You failed to provide this basic tour service as well. Arjan was extremely poor guide. Not helpful, not informed, disorganized. Very stressed.Several times provided us with false information causing stress and discomfort. Not aware what we are to expect at next destinations?! Means you not doing your job that I contracted you to do! As a group we were insulted by your arrogance to think that you will use our hands to clean filthy village in Thailand. Its not about green movement and cleaning beach. Thats not a problem. This village is littered with years of garbage. Thats their way of living, they can sit and drink coffee by piles of garbage, it does not bother them but you think that I paid so much money to go and clean for them? In the high heat and humidity 80 plus seniors cleaning fishing village?? only infantile adult could come up with such insult. You ruined our day and caused great physical and emotional discomfort. We paid for all attractions, and meals out of pocket, all you did was a guide sending text with 10 things to see in a current place. I could do without this text. We got more info from the internet on our own. Bad hotels, no meals, primitive transport, horrible guides: what did We pay you for? You ruined our experience, you insulted us and you endangered our health and wellbeing. The group discussed these issues at the end of tour and we all share these concerns. I know couple of my friends have already written to you but you have dishonorably disregarded the problems. We, my husband and I, demand refund of at least 50% of 7190.00 paid as you failed to provide even basic services. We hold TourRadar responsible for this situation as we purchased this tour through them. Barbara and Krzysztof Flis

The tour was fantastic! Our tour guides were very knowledgeable and were very attentive to our needs. Every tour guide was on time and all of our connections worked our flawlessly. Danny from Legends was always available to answer questions and ensured a well planned trip. My only suggestion would be for the Legend group to make it clear about the visa process for Cambodia in that travellers should not try to arrange to get it ahead of time and to ensure they have USD to pay for it at the border.
This tour was great but had a couple flaws. As the tourist on this trip, I got a little burned out on the amount of walk through discussions and explanations of the temples visited (23 total). I would have enjoyed them more if there was a free roam granted at all of them. If there are questions, then the guides should be able to be provide asked answers. I was bored by the 5th temple and ready to leave. Also, it should be mentioned a month before the trip of how many of these temples require "conservative" clothing. The temples/mausoleums visited were not all the same as noted in the tour itinerary. For a 19 day tour it is only fair that the traveler is made aware of the proper clothing to pack especially when the weather is very warm, With that said, there were some great destinations visited. The meals provided (mostly lunch) were really good. To future travelers, be aware that in this tour, you will have 5-10 tour guides, and about 7-10 different drivers, all of who "appreciate" at least a $5-$10 /day tip. Have shirts that cover your shoulders, and bottoms that cover your knees for the days that you go to temples.

We had an amazing time. We would recommend this tour to others. One recommendation would be to reduce the additional flight from Cambodia to Phuket to 1 flight not 2, to increase the amount of time in Phuket and spend less time in airports.
Every detail was planned and executed perfectly. We had the right amount of free time to explore on our own. The service was extraordinary!!! We stayed in 3 star boutique hotels that were very nice and the staff treated us like we were royalty. The breakfasts were all wonderful with plenty of options.

We did the 23 day Vietnam, Cambodia and Thailand tour. Here are our thoughts and some hopefully helpful information for those considering this trip in the future. We loved Vietnam. Our guide Duc was excellent and the pace was varied with some long days interspersed with shorter days. In this leg, we got to spend time in the cities and villages exploring and did a multitude of different activities. Very good mix of things. Loved Ha Long Bay. Cambodia was fine. It was only 5 days and our guide was ok. Some neat adventures like the bamboo train and bat cave, plus Angkor Wat as the highlight. Thailand was terrible. We spent 4 days out of 6 on the bus for over 6 hours each day just visiting temples. Too many temples and too long on the bus. We would arrive at hotels after 7 pm, told to find dinner but have your bags out by 630 am the next morning. No time to explore the towns or enjoy the hotel amenities. The itinerary was a joke for these times talking about enjoying time at the pool or local markets when we arrived so late. Little to no culture in the Thailand tour. We felt cheated on learning about Thailand, and it was exhausting. We would recommend travel talk do up some FAQs for travellers speaking about visas, (some wasted money on a Cambodian e visa and photo, neither of which was needed) currencies, water consumption, luggage limits well before the trip (were told limits 3 days before when we had already left home). Tell people inclusion fees must be paid in cash so people can plan for this. No credit card option is available. So be prepared to visit the atm regularly. The overall itinerary needs to be updated as prices are not current and some places have been closed since Covid and substitutions were made. Some optional activities were not available. Our actual tour ended 2 days before it should have with the Thailand guide leaving us Friday afternoon and we were on own own the rest of that day, Saturday and Sunday morning. Look for hotels closer to things to do in the cities. Some were more than 30 minutes away from anything and nothing around for restaurants. Overall, we could recommend Vietnam and perhaps Cambodia, but not Thailand.
Should have been called a “Temple Tour” as we visited more temples than anything else. Mostly the hotels were good with the exception of The Wink hotel, which was changed pretty much last minute from the Paragon Saigon Hotel, which was 3 star at best. It was a shame that we didn’t get to spend more time in these hotels - boarding the bus at 7 a.m and reaching the next hotel at 6:45 p.m, still needing to get dinner just for a repeat experience the next day was really not enjoyable. Moreover, during these 12 hour tours, our stops were for temples and one unspectacular lake; very disappointing. The speed boat ride to Cambodia was also disappointing, we were jammed in tight and seating was so low we couldn’t see anything. Then on arrival at Cambodia, we were faced with a very steep ramp to pull our luggage up and NO ONE to help- no porters for us but other tours also disembarking there had porters???

Jay Jay and Morgan were great tour guides! My husband and I requested private accommodations the first day of the tour (for a separate upgraded cost, of course) and they made those arrangements for us seamlessly. They also had numerous recommendations for food and activities on the days we had free time, which was very helpful. We loved this tour and enjoyed our time immensely!
TERRIBLE SERVICE- if I could give 0 stars I would! I was looking forward to a lovely tour of Thailand as it seems like a rather beautiful country to explore. However, due to unforeseen circumstances, I requested to change the dates of my tour which fell to death ears. I was asked to pay an additional charge to change dates to later this year which is outrageous considering the low cost of living and budget hostels/ hotels booked. All in all save your money and book with another company that appreciates you as a consumer.

Lots of history and learning about temples. It was a good tour
We saw so much in these 21 days. The hotels were all good. The communication from the office was excellent and when we did have a minor issue it was remedied immediately. We took 5 flights on this tour and all our transfers were punctual and well organized. We cannot fault the organization of Bravo Indochina Tours. Most of the local guides were excellent but there were one or two who did not have a good enough grasp of the English language to do a tour in English. The included meals were excellent, and all activities were organized extremely well. We would highly recommend Bravo Indochina Tours and a big shout out to Ha Nguyen who was always there for us. Thank you for making this a very special trip for us.

The itinerary we received before we departed from Phuket was completely different from the itinerary while on the yacht. We accept that things may have to change due to weather and other imponderables but not a completely different itinerary that had no resemblance to what we expected!
Such a great trip. A very relaxing start with 2 days meandering down the Mekong river on a lovely riverboat. Great way to have time to get to know your fellow travellers. I fell in love with Luang Prabang and really appreciated some free time there to explore on my own. Accommodation was first class (Pakbeng was a bit basic, but there's not much there to choose from so fair enough) and the pace was perfect. Not too rushed and only had to unpack a couple of times.

The tour guides during this tour are absolutely fantastic. They completely saved our trip and gave us an amazing experience. They work so tirelessly to ensure you have an amazing time. The booking company is less than perfect. They guarantee 3 star hotel stays, but clearly choose the cheapest venues possible. We had to change our hotel twice due to not having hot water. One hotel had also clearly built our room over the property cesspool and the smell was awful. I also do not reccomend 3 days at Kaeng Kratchen. We completed our itinerary there in half a day. Our guide came up with alternate plans for us. The tour company was unwilling to alter our plan, or change our booking, even though they incorrectly planned that itinerary. The company did change our room for one of the terrible hotels, but would have rather spent the time used for this towards enjoying our vacation. If you book with this company really investigate the hot wet l bookings, and do not spend the allotted time at Kaeng Kratchen.
It was one of the best memories in my trip,m and I really appreciate the service. I wood like to utilize again.

Vietnam travel agency's experience of serving super-rich tourists

V IP tourists who come on private tours spend US$15,000 a day, demand unique experiences and prefer to see Vietnam's sidewalk culture rather than be cocooned, a travel operator says.

Nguyen Duc Hanh, CEO of All Asia Vacation, which recently arranged a tour for American tech billionaire Bill Gates in Vietnam in early March, says his company has provided services to many well-heeled tourists from around the world including Hollywood stars, tennis legends and CEOs of leading corporations in the last 20 years.

Most of them spend an average of $500 a day, though some spend up to $15,000, he says.

However, access to billionaires and other global celebrities is extremely difficult, and Hanh's company had to find a way to contact their personal managers to introduce its tour products.

Its most time-consuming campaign, one that lasted five years, was to enter the ecosystem of a high-end travel company in the U.S.

Its clients are global celebrities and billionaires.

Hanh had to pay an initial $150,000 and then annual fees.

He then waited for five years for his partner to arrange an appointment in the U.S., opening up opportunities to reach potential customers.

He says all tour packages for that company's clients have to be designed to meet individual preferences.

The most difficult tour program he ever did was in April 2017 for one of the four richest people in Canada.

Their group of 11 people wanted to unwind for a while in Da Nang before traveling to Quang Binh to visit Son Doong, the world's largest cave.

Hanh's company had to address two issues.

Firstly, the billionaire guests did not have the time to sit in a car for six hours to go from Da Nang to Quang Binh by road.

Secondly, bookings for Son Doong tours are limited and full all year, and so arranging a tour at short notice was next to impossible.

Hanh says most super-rich clients do not have the habit of booking tours early and only make last-minute travel decisions, but are willing to spend any amount of money to get the experiences they want.

After innumerable meetings, Hanh's company came up with the solution of flying by seaplane, an hour's journey.

At first the seaplane operators refused saying "there is no such route."

But with great effort a "new route" was launched to serve a group of just 11.

The aircraft flew at low altitude, enabling the billionaire from Canada, whose identity remains a secret, and his friends to see Vietnam's beautiful coastline.

Then Hanh’s company managed to arrange a private tour of Son Doong for the guests.

Hanh says: "Nothing is impossible. Saying no also means shutting the door to your customers."

Tourist destinations in Vietnam are no longer esoteric for international travelers, and so Hanh's company has found ways to offer new travel experiences.

For example, in Ha Long Bay, a well-off customer can easily book the most expensive yacht to stay overnight in the bay.

But billionaires want their experiences to be unique.

Ha Long Bay has many beautiful beaches but are not used for many reasons, including safety. When the tide rises, some beaches are submerged.

To create a unique experience, Hanh's company obtained permission from various government agencies to use one such beach during low tide. It then threw a party there and cleaned up after it was over.

The next morning, when the billionaire woke up in his yacht, he saw that the beach where the party had been held was underwater.

"Creativity is especially important in arranging tours for the super-rich," Hanh says.

Even though trips are carefully prepared in every detail, mistakes can still occur.

Hanh once arranged a tour for a VIP couple to learn cooking at a famous chef's house in Hoi An. The guests really liked it but said later the chef's space was too large, making them feel "out of place."

On another occasion, he organized a tour for some wealthy visitors by helicopter from Hanoi to Sa Pa and Sa Pa to Ha Giang.

The Hanoi-Sa Pa trip went well, but when it was time for the second leg the weather was cloudy and the helicopter could not take off.

"You can't blame the weather," Hanh says, but adds that a trip for super-rich guests always has at least two backup plans.

In this case the tour operator told the guests to travel by car instead and added extra services as "compensation."

After many years of serving uber rich tourists, Hanh realizes that Vietnam has lots going for it, especially in terms of landscapes and culture and its people’s friendliness.

He says many billionaires prefer to experience the sidewalk culture rather than be reclusive.

"They come to Vietnam because they like the unique culture."

Nevertheless, Vietnam finds it difficult to attract VIP guests due to its lack of direct flights, unfriendly visa policies and complicated procedures for getting permissions for special services.

Super-rich people from North America who want to visit Vietnam mostly have to transit en route, a tedious task that puts many off, Hanh points out.

Gates, accompanied by his partner Paula Hurd, came on a four-day tour to the central coastal city of Da Nang from March 4.

All Asia Vacation arranged a private tour for them to learn about Vietnamese tea and meditation on Ban Co mountain peak along with tea artiste Hoang Anh Suong.

As CEO, I use weekly and monthly rituals to reinforce our company values

  • Razorfish's Josh Campo said the Publicis ad agency used rituals to reinforce its values post-office return.
  • He said he believed these efforts had led to company growth and strong retention.
  • This story is part of " What's Next ," a series about business leaders' strategies for workplace productivity.

Insider Today

This as-told-to essay is based on a conversation with Josh Campo, the CEO of the ad agency Razorfish. The following has been edited for length and clarity.

We're a services business, so obviously we work on number of [billable] hours. But that's not a very useful metric for productivity . We look at how we're driving success and the relevance of the ideas that we come up with. We're essentially an idea company — we come up with plans to solve a client's business challenge. The relevance of those ideas really dictate: Are we growing and winning more clients and doing more work?

As we've expanded to almost 2,000 people, the challenge has been to figure out ways to maintain the values and culture that got us here.

We mandated that people come back to the office three days a week, but we have always been pretty invested in providing flexibility. Teams and Zoom are great, but there's a certain magic when you're in the room together trying to hash out a challenge and figure out the right solution for a client.

Before there was a policy, people were starting to come back in, but you could show up on a day and maybe see three people. As much as it would be great for everyone to be self-organized, when Publicis is almost 90,000 people, and Razorfish is almost 2,000, you do create a sense of disappointment when folks come in and they're one of 10 people, as opposed to one of 100.

While there has been skepticism around that approach , it does provide for a better experience overall knowing people will be there.

During the earlier COVID days, when we were all remote, we found ways to connect with folks and instill the values of the organization. As we came back to the office, the muscle memory of what we had done for years and years was not there.

From listening tours to Taco Tuesdays

We had to come up with new rituals to create consistency among team members. That was probably one of the most significant challenges for us.

So before the return-to-office mandate , at the beginning of 2023, we started office tours. Our president and I did a "10 cities in 10 days" tour and just went to go talk to people, saying, "Hey, this is what the year is going to be about." We had other leaders go and do listening tours. We also had remote sessions for everything, so everything is done in parity.

Another thing we do is monthly Q&As we call "Open Doors" where anybody can ask me and other leaders any question they want.

Other rituals we started were quarterly monetary awards that recognize the values of the organization: accountable, entrepreneurial, progressive, passionate, and kind. And "Razorfish Week," which is focused on celebrating aspects of the in-office experience, with things like a service day and leaders talking about their careers.

We also brought back pre-COVID rituals like Bagel Wednesday and Taco Tuesday. Food is a big part of social engagement , creating those bonding moments for folks and reminding them of some of the upsides of being in the office.

The city-rollout tours are pretty popular in terms of how well they're attended. I'd say we're probably at about 80% of folks in any given location. The Open Doors sessions can be quite well attended. I think they resonate because of their transparency.

We ask a lot of our people in terms of working hard and delivering for our clients. We owe them transparency on basically anything that we can tell them about, whether it's the business, whether it's about clients, whether it's about policies. I do think that that is one of the most appreciated aspects of our people and working at Razorfish.

We do get tough questions sometimes. Some days I feel like we've got a couple hundred people, and other days there's almost 1,000. I'm always wondering when I join and there are 1,000 people, "Oh, what is somebody going to ask?"

We're having success in terms of winning new clients and expanding our relationships with existing clients. And that, to me, is ultimately the best metric of productivity. Another area that I would look at is talent-retention rates , which have been better than the industry average, even through very highly competitive periods of the past couple of years. We do engagement surveys, which, by and large, come back favorable for us.

There's always room for improvement. We're still trying to figure out what we do next and iterate on the rituals that we've come up with. There's a lot of things outside our control. It's a huge plus if you can create trust and transparency with your team so that they come along with you and understand you don't control everything but that you're all going to be in the boat rowing in the same direction.
