The August 2021 Rec of the Month highlights Appalachian State University’s University Recreation (UREC) facilities, field complex and outdoor recreation facility.

DESCRIPTION OF FACILITIES

Appalachian State University UREC operates three on-campus multipurpose facilities, an Intramural/Club Sports field complex, and 38-acre, off-site outdoor recreation facility. Spread throughout the hilly campus, each facility has a personality of its own and attracts varied populations and subcultures.

Student Recreation Center

  • 125,000 square feet.
  • 50-foot climbing wall.
  • Cardio theater.
  • Weight room.
  • Indoor walking/running track.
  • 50-meter swimming pool.
  • UREC central offices.
  • Outdoor Program’s Outing Center.

Appalachian State University

Quinn Recreation Center

  • 48,000 square feet.
  • Newly renovated, state-of-the-art, fully-customized weight room with in-floor platforms and 12 Precor racks.
  • Cardio equipment.
  • Open fitness floor which hosts group fitness classes, PE classes and is open for informal use when not scheduled.
  • State-of-the-art cycle studio.
  • Functional training studio.
  • Racquetball courts.

Mt. Mitchell Fitness Center

  • Located on the third floor of the Plemmons Student Union.
  • Cardiovascular equipment.
  • Cybex selectorized equipment.
  • Free weights.
  • Multipurpose studio which hosts a variety of group fitness classes.

State Farm Fields

  • A 24-acre sports complex.
  • Home to outdoor intramural sports and most outdoor club sports.
  • Six intramural flag football/soccer fields.
  • Three club sports fields.
  • Three softball fields.
  • State-of-the-art lighting systems.
  • Picnic shelter.
  • An equipment rental center.

Camp Broadstone

  • Broadstone is a 38-acre outdoor recreation facility that provides opportunities for team building, facility rentals and wilderness medical certifications. The space includes cabins, a community lodge, campfire pits, picnic pavilions, a large flat field that boards the Watauga River, a low ropes course, a high ropes course, an Alpine Tower and a team development course.

  • Group fitness classes like Stand Up Paddle Board Yoga and Outdoor Program clinics such as kayak roll clinics.
  • Swim club hosting Southeast regional swim meets.
  • Camps and clinics partnerships.
  • Track and Field team uses the pool to practice the high jump underwater.

Outdoor Programs

  • Outdoor trips in which participants are taught the skills they need to have a successful adventure are offered throughout the local region, United States and internationally. Many trips are led by App State students who participate in an extensive Instructor Development Program to prepare to become trip leaders.
  • Our indoor climbing wall offers opportunities for bouldering, top rope climbing, lead climbing, adaptive climbing and anchor building with clinics to help others learn how to enjoy the sport of climbing.
  • Provides outdoor equipment rentals to help support the community in having their own outdoor adventure.
  • Bike App supports the Appalachian State community through education and advocacy for a more sustainable, bike-friendly campus and town . We do this through offering free bicycle tunings and repairs with an emphasis on education and hands-on experiences.
  • Team building provides groups the opportunity to dive deeper into reaching their goals. Intentional program plans help groups build a greater sense of belonging and connectivity by enhancing communication skills and interpersonal dynamics, as well as leadership and decision-making skills.

Exercise is Medicine On Campus – Gold ranking two years in a row!

Significant highlights of this initiative that were vital in obtaining Gold level recognition have included:

  • 2018: Exercise prescription referral system in partnership with Student Health Services.
  • 2019: Physical Activity as a Vital Sign added to intake forms at Student Health Services.
  • 2020: Student-led EIM-OC Club established.

Club Sports

  • Our Club Sports program is designed to meet the competitive athletic desires of students, faculty and staff of App State. Our student athletes play for the “love of the game” and the lasting relationships established with their teammates.
  • Each team is formed, developed, governed and administered by the student membership of that particular club working with UREC.
  • Club Sports currently offers 23 club teams including men, women and co-rec.

Intramural Sports

  • Rec Sports mission is to provide exceptional experiences for our members through the social and competitive aspects of sports — with a focus on the spirit of the game mindset.
  • The main sports provided by Rec Sports are basketball, flag football, soccer and volleyball. As well as esports and other sports based on the needs of our members.

2024 NCAA Tournament bracket: College basketball scores, March Madness TV, live stream, schedule by region

The first round of the NCAA Tournament continues Friday with some fantastic matchups on the slate as we take a step closer to determining a national champion. The opening game on the schedule is a good one, and it features No. 8 seed FAU taking on No. 9 seed Northwestern to presumably have the right to face No. 1 seed UConn, who is in action later in the day against No. 16 seed Stetson. 

Other games in the first viewing window include No. 14 seed Colgate playing No. 3 seed Baylor, No. 5 seed San Diego State facing No. 12 UAB, and No. 2 seed Marquette looking to advance when they face No. 15 seed Western Kentucky. 

No. 4 seed Duke faces No. 13 seed Vermont on CBS later in the day, while No. 1 Houston has a date with No. 16 seed Longwood in one of the final games of the opening round.

Memberships, things to note prior to purchasing a membership.

UREC's memberships are not prorated and are non-refundable. 

The parking lots require current Faculty/Staff permits.  After 7pm and on the weekends, students, employees, and the public may park in any Boone Campus lot. For more information about Parking, we recommend reaching the Parking & Transportation department.

Facility Hours are adjusted due to adverse weather, home football games, breaks, holidays, interim periods, and as needed for maintenance purposes.  Due to student staffing and maintenance projects, there will be periods of time (especially interim periods) when the facilities are closed.  We keep our hours updated on our website.  Please check the Hours page for the most current facility hours.

Your Membership will grant access to the following facilities (as well as programs and services including, but not limited to group fitness classes, etc.):

Hickory Recreation Center (must be aged 18+ for access)

Members must present a valid AppCard or download the UREC app for admittance to the recreation facilities. 

AppCards (first issuance) for household members are $15 each.  This cost is not included in your membership.  UREC will initiate the request for AppCards for your household members.

All participants (members and guests) must complete a Waiver.  If the participant is a minor under the age of 18, the parent/guardian must sign the Waiver before participation.

University Recreation must obtain waivers with "original" signatures.

The waiver is valid for a five (5) year period.

    Quinn Recreation Center. The Dwight W. Quinn Recreation Center is located on Stadium Drive, across from Kidd Brewer Stadium. It was built in 1987 and is a 48,000 square-foot facility equipped with state-of-the-art fitness equipment.

    Current members 18 years of age or older are allowed one guest per day for $10. Guest passes may be used each day during regular facility hours. The pass is only valid for that day. To obtain a guest pass, members must present their current valid University ID card and the guest and member must sign in at the facility.

  21. Guest Policy

    Spouses/Significant Others and Dependents that are 16 years of age or older are allowed one guest per day at the rate of $6.00. Dependents under the age of 16 cannot sponsor guests at any time. Sponsors will be held accountable for their guest's behavior. All guest passes must be purchased at the Student Recreation Center.

  22. Student Recreation Center Facility Policies

    The following are prohibited: Food or drinks in an open container (i.e. cup). Glass containers, tobacco products, gum, alcoholic beverages, pets, and bikes. Cleats or spikes footwear. Cell phone use in any of the restrooms or locker rooms. Use of cameras for taking photos or video. Dunk, grab, or hang on the basketball rims. Guests & Dependents.

  23. Memberships

    Hickory Recreation Center (must be aged 18+ for access) Members must present a valid AppCard or download the UREC app for admittance to the recreation facilities. AppCards (first issuance) for household members are $15 each. This cost is not included in your membership. UREC will initiate the request for AppCards for your household members.
