‘A new era in global golf’: European Tour to be renamed DP World Tour

  • Dubai company will assume title sponsorship in 2022
  • Prize fund from next year will exceed $200m

The collective will of golf’s establishment to swat aside challenges by Saudi Arabia means the European Tour will be renamed from the start of next year. DP World, the Dubai-based logistics company, will take on title sponsorship of the tour, with prize funds to increase as a direct result. The European Tour, formed in 1972, will keep its name as an overarching corporate entity only.

Saudi Arabia’s manoeuvres in the professional game have met staunch resistance from the European and PGA Tours, who are now in strategic alliance. Greg Norman was recently confirmed as the public face of a Saudi-based series of 10 events on the Asian Tour. The Saudis have long-held aspirations of a golf super league but, as yet, have no formal buy-in from leading players.

The DP World Tour will lead to prize funds – including major championships and World Golf Championships – totalling more than $200m (£147m) for the first time. Tournaments solely sanctioned by the DP World Tour must have a minimum purse of $2m.

Next year will feature a minimum of 47 tournaments in 27 different countries, including new events in the United Arab Emirates, Japan, South Africa and Belgium. Neither the European Tour nor DP World would detail the length of their partnership or its total monetary value but it is understood the latter runs into hundreds of millions of dollars.

“This announcement is momentous and will herald a new era in global golf,” said Keith Pelley, the European Tour’s chief executive. “When I joined [in 2016] I told the board I felt the name of the tour was a misnomer and did not reflect our brand. We are definitely a world tour.

“The DP World Tour is a natural evolution of our decade-long partnership, and the presence of ‘world’ in our new title better reflects our global reach. We will always remember our heritage and those who have gone before us who helped us shape our tour but we also rejoice in our global footprint.”

Pelley refused to reference directly the Saudi/Asian Tour alliance. However, this will inevitably be viewed as the further closing of ranks by the PGA and European Tours.

Rory McIlroy, speaking via video conference to a media event held in Dubai , branded the deal “great news for global golf”. The four-times major winner has previously spoken out against Saudi plans for his sport.

Jay Monahan, the PGA Tour’s commissioner, said: “I’ve said before that our respective tours are positioned to grow – together – over the next 10 years faster than we ever have at any point in our existence and today’s announcement is another point of proof in those efforts.”

2022 DP World Tour Championship leaderboard, scores: Matt Fitzpatrick, Tyrrell Hatton begin to separate

The englishmen will be difficult to catch over the final 36 holes in dubai this weekend.

DP World Tour Championship - Day Two

As was the case upon the completion of the first round, Matt Fitzpatrick and Tyrrell Hatton find themselves alongside each other at the top of the leaderboard heading into the weekend at the 2022 DP World Tour Championship. Playing in the final group in the second round, the two Ryder Cup teammates traded blows around Jumeirah Golf Estates, and ultimately signed for rounds of 5-under 67 to finish their days at 12 under for the tournament.

While Fitzpatrick was the one to shoot out of the gates on Thursday, it was Hatton's turn on Friday. Connecting on four birdies in his opening five holes, Hatton quickly opened up a three-stroke lead over his playing competitor.

"I'm pretty happy with the score. I got off to another nice start again today," said Hatton. "Hopefully the putter stays fairly hot and we have a good weekend. There's still 36 holes to play. I have a fairly good record around here. Matt [Fitzpatrick] has an excellent record around here. But, you know, we'll enjoy each other's company tomorrow and hopefully we can keep playing well."

Struggles and visible disdain ensued for the world No. 29 as three bogeys in his next seven holes allowed Fitzpatrick to claw his way back. The reigning U.S. Open champion reclaimed a share of the lead with a birdie on the par-4 15th, and pushed ahead with another on the following hole. This lead would be short-lived as Hatton converted a birdie opportunity from 20 feet on the par-3 17th before the two were able to save par on the closing par-5 18th after struggles off the tee.

"Just got to keep pushing on, just keep playing how I feel like I'm playing right now. I feel really comfortable with where my game is at, particularly after three weeks off, and looking forward to the weekend," said Fitzpatrick. "I feel like I've played two good rounds to start with and put myself in position, and I'll just keep doing more of the same and see where it gets me come Sunday."

For their efforts, the Englishmen have grown a three-stroke edge over their nearest pursuers. Former European Ryder Cup member Alex Noren stands at 9 under alongside Adri Arnaus, and a bit further back a couple big fish are waiting in the shallows. Two-time DP World Tour Championship winner Jon Rahm stands at 8 under after a splendid round of 6-under 66 while Rory McIlroy is at 5 under courtesy of a fast finish.

Round 2 leaderboard, scores

  • T1. Matt Fitzpatrick: -12
  • T1. Tyrrell Hatton: -12
  • T3. Alex Noren: -9
  • T3. Adri Arnaus: -9
  • T5. Jon Rahm: -8
  • T5. Jorge Campillo: -8
  • 6. Kurt Kitayama: -7
  • T8. Tommy Fleetwood: -6
  • T8. Rasmus Hojgaard: -6
  • T8. Min Woo Lee: -6
  • T11. Rory McIlroy: -5
  • T11. Adrian Otaegui: -5
  • T11. Richie Ramsay: -5
  • T11. Yannik Paul: -5
  • T11. Maximilian Kieffer: -5

World No. 1 may have found something

A birdie-birdie-eagle finish propelled McIlroy to a round of 4-under 68 in his second round and back into contention. Playing his first 33 holes in 1 under, the world No. 1 found himself as many as 10 strokes back. Now at 5 under, he sits in a tie for 11th and only seven adrift. McIlroy is projected to finish second in the DP World Tour Ranking after entering the week in the top spot given Fitzpatrick's presence at the top of the leaderboard.

"[It was] pretty mediocre golf for the first 33 holes, and then something sort of clicked," said McIlroy of his fast finish. "Whatever it is, I need to bottle it for the weekend. It was nice to finish with a flourish there and put myself a little closer to the guys. You never know, that finish here on Friday could be key to something that happens over the next 36 holes."

DP World Tour Championship updated odds and picks

Odds via Caesars Sportsbook

  • Matt Fitzpatrick: 8/5
  • Tyrrell Hatton: 5/2
  • Jon Rahm: 5-1
  • Rory McIlroy: 12-1
  • Alex Noren: 12-1
  • Adri Arnaus: 25-1
  • Kurt Kitayama: 30-1
  • Tommy Fleetwood: 35-1

One member of the English pair is likely to nab this title, but I can't help but look in the direction of Rahm at 5-1. Entering the week as one of the hottest players in the world, the Spaniard was able to climb his way back into this tournament with seven birdies against only one bogey. Rahm left a couple shots out there on Friday and should be in with a chance come the final nine holes on Sunday if he is able to wield the putter in the same manner as his previous five starts.

Didn't take long for Cognizant to find out how weather can mess with our tournament | D'Angelo

d tour golf

PALM BEACH GARDENS — Welcome to Palm Beach County, my friends from Cognizant.

Now you know how the folks from Honda felt.

Most years, golfers get through 72 holes of this PGA Tour event with wind as the only weather challenge. After all, this is the "dry season."

Most years.

Those who sloshed through the floods and avoided the water moccasins when nearly 8 inches of rain fell during the 2015 tournament will argue that. Or those caught in the deluge two years ago when the leaders were on the 72nd hole might object.

That 2015 storm forced a Monday finish . That was the last time … before Sunday. Just less than 2 1/2 inches fell Sunday at PGA National, leading to a 3.5-hour delay, pushing the final round of the Cognizant Classic in the Palm Beaches into Monday. Play will resume at 8 a.m., with Jupiter's Eric Van Rooyen the leader in the clubhouse at 14-under after shooting a 63 Sunday. Austin Eckroat is 15-under with 11 holes to play.

Jupiter's Shane Lowery, the 54-hole leader, played five holes Sunday. He dropped a shot and sits at 12-under.

"Rain delays are tough, especially when you're playing well," said Keith Mitchell, who shot a 65 Sunday to finish at 12-under. "You want to keep the train rolling. Sometimes it's good if you had a bad start and you get to kind of reset."

"I wish there was a secret sauce to them, but you've just got to kind of manage."

Fans started seeking cover just before play was suspended at 12:50 p.m. Overhangs, grandstands, restaurants, the pro shop, hospitality suites like the Champagne Lounge behind the 10th tee box were popular hangouts.

For some, the storm was good for business. The pro shop sold out of umbrellas. Guessing alcohol sales were brisk, too, in the suites and tents where people sought shelter.

Some Cognizant fans hung around for golf to resume

Noreen Maloney of Boston is vacationing in Fort Lauderdale. A native of Ireland, she came to see Lowry.

"It's been a long time since he won," she said. The 2019 British Open to be exact, at least on the PGA Tour.

But long before her fellow countryman hit his first shot, she was driven off the course. Maloney headed to the covered grandstand behind the 17th green when the rain started and waited out the long delay.

"I seen the way the clouds were turning there, I said 'I better get over this side,' " she said. "You're going to walk out there you're going to get absolutely soaked."

Aaron Schwartz and his wife debated on making the drive from Plantation. They weren't sure they made the right decision when they arrived to find a "deluge of people" pouring out of PGA National.

A devoted golfer, Schwartz checked his app, anticipated the weather would clear and waited it out at Birdie's Diner, not wanting to miss a "historic" inaugural Cognizant Classic.

By 3 p.m., golfers were back on the range and the course was being evaluated. About 30 minutes later, fans were emerging from the pro shop and restaurants to line up at the gate. By 4:20, the horn sounded and play resumed.

Van Rooyen was one of 40 golfers who finished and do not have to return Monday, although he might make the short drive to PGA National.

More: Tiger Woods, Tom Brady head field at Monday's star-studded Seminole pro-member in Juno Beach

The South African is one of a several golfers in the field who lives locally. He thought about heading home when play was suspended but worried about getting a little too comfortable.

"If I get home, I'm going to sit on my couch and grab a beer probably," he said. "Good thing I stayed."

Van Rooyen isn't sure what he is doing Monday.

"I've got no expectations," he said. "If I'm within two and those boys are walking up to 15th tee box (the start of the Bear Trap), I'll be here."

Douglas P. DeFelice

The Cognizant Classic in The Palm Beaches was Austin Eckroat’s to win or lose from the moment he got up on Monday morning. The second-year PGA Tour pro had a one-shot lead with 11 holes remaining as the rain-delayed final round spilling over from Sunday. And the person who trailed him by that one shot, Erik van Rooyan, was already down the road at the Seminole Pro-Member , having finished his final round on Sunday with a spectacular 63 to close . Barring a chaser taking advantage of the soft conditions on the Champion Course at PGA National, Eckroat, 25, needed merely to play steady golf to close things out—a feat that’s easier said than done when you’re trying to claim your fist PGA Tour title.

Eckroat, however, did just that, playing his remaining holes on Monday in two under to post a final-round 67 and a 17-under 26. And while Min Woo Lee cut the lead to one after an eagle on the 10th hole, the Australian made just one more birdie coming in to tie van Rooyan at 14 under and claim a share of second.

It was Eckroat’s 50th career PGA Tour start, his best previous showing a second at the 2023 AT&T Byron Nelson. He earned a prize money payout of $1.62 million from the overall purse of $9 million, as well as a spot in the upcoming Masters and PGA Championship.

Here's the prize money payout for everyone who made the cut this year at PGA National.

Austin Eckroat gets his 1st PGA Tour win by prevailing at Cognizant Classic

PALM BEACH GARDENS, Fla. — Austin Eckroat waited a long time to become a winner on the PGA Tour. Another day didn’t hurt.

Eckroat got the first victory of his tour career Monday, topping Erik van Rooyen and Min Woo Lee by three shots to win the weather-delayed Cognizant Classic. Among his prizes: $1.62 million — by far his biggest golf payday — along with tour status for two years and a trip to the Masters for the first time.

Eckroat shot a final round of 4-under 67, finishing at 17-under 267.

He said he was nervous Monday. He hid it well, never giving up the lead.

“This has always been my dream to win on the PGA Tour,” Eckroat told Golf Channel. “And just to win, I haven’t won since 2019 — it was a college event. It’s just been so long. I’m just so happy.”

He left PGA National on Sunday night when darkness stopped play with a one-stroke lead and was never caught. Back-to-back birdies on the 12th and 13th holes protected his lead, and a 12-footer for birdie on the par-4 16th pushed the edge out to three shots.

“I just kept telling myself, ‘I’ve put myself in this position for a reason,’” Eckroat said. “This is what I want to do.”

Eckroat laid up on the par-5 18th to protect his lead and take water out of play, knowing all he had to do was avoid disaster to finish off his first tour win in 50 career starts. He made an easy par, sealing the win.

“I was just really happy I was able to perform in the situation,” Eckroat said.

Van Rooyen had his round of 8-under 63 on Sunday to finish at 14 under. Cameron Young (66), K.H. Lee (66), Shane Lowry (71), David Skinns (71) and Jake Knapp (66) all ended their rounds on Monday, all wrapping up at 13 under. K.H. Lee made three birdies in the five holes he played Monday.

But nobody caught Eckroat, a 25-year-old who was a star at Oklahoma State before turning pro.

His most memorable tour moment, before Monday, likely was last year in the final round of the U.S. Open to become the sixth player in that tournament’s history to post a nine-hole score of 29. Eckroat shot a 5-under 65 and finished in a tie for 10th at 3 under — ensuring he’d play in this year’s U.S. Open.

The season’s first major awaits him now as well. He’s going to Augusta National next month, with stops at Bay Hill and The Players along the way to Magnolia Lane.

“The adversity of sleeping mid-round, I’m just really happy with how I handled it,” said Eckroat, who became the fourth first-time winner in nine tour events this season, joining Nick Dunlap, Matthieu Pavon and Knapp.

For Knapp, last week’s winner in Mexico, he’s now had three top-five finishes in his 10 career PGA Tour starts. His earnings are up to about $2.5 million.

“I was happy with how I managed everything this week,” Knapp told Golf Channel.

The Monday finish was needed after a thunderstorm dumped nearly 2 inches of rain and brought lightning to the area Sunday afternoon, causing a 3½-hour delay in the final round. Of the 68 players who made the cut, 42 finished on Sunday — so 26 returned on Monday to play somewhere between one and 13 holes.

It was a quick day for Billy Horschel. He couldn’t get to the 18th tee before the horn blew to stop play on Sunday night, meaning he had to come back and play the par-5 finishing hole on Monday. He had a 9-footer for birdie, settled for par and was done in 15 minutes.

Horschel — who vaulted into the mix with six consecutive birdies on Sunday afternoon — finished at 12 under. He ended up tied for ninth, along with Keith Mitchell, Peter Malnati, Alex Noren, Andrew Novak, Kevin Yu and Martin Laird.

Best golf balls you can buy in 2024, share this article.

A decade ago, the sight of a non-white golf ball would raise a few eyebrows, but those days are long gone. TaylorMade, one of the largest golf ball makers in the world, predicts its non-white ball sales in 2024 – comprised of balls with stripes, special markings or customized logos – will eclipse traditional white ball sales for the first time.

Golf balls with corporate logos have been popular for decades, but tour pros like Rickie Fowler and Tommy Fleetwood compete in PGA Tour events, major championships and Ryder Cups using TaylorMade’s TP5 and TP5x Pix balls that have markings designed to aid in alignment and to reveal how purely you’ve hit your putt. Callaway’s Truvis balls, which are covered in pentagons, have been popular for several years and Srixon’s Divide balls are eye-catching in every weather condition and also help golfers perform better on the greens.

At the same time, manufacturers like Titleist, maker of the Pro V1 , and Callaway, maker of the new Chrome Tour , have never made balls to a higher precisely, which means that from ball to ball, consistency is better than ever before.

With such a wide variety of balls on the market, ranging in price from about $22 to around $55 per dozen, finding a ball that matches your game and your budget can be tricky, but Golfweek’s 2024 Golf Ball Guide is here to help. Prioritize what you want from your golf ball (distance, short game spin, soft feel), and then think about a price range you are willing to pay. Keep in mind that if you go down in price, you will likely have to compromise something because the materials that make premium balls perform so well don’t come cheap.

Buy a three-ball sleeve of several different balls, go to the course and see how they perform on chip shots, pitch shots and short approach shots first, then see how they work for you with long irons and woods. The unique way you swing will make each ball play differently, but testing balls on the course will always be the best way to find your perfect golf ball.

Note: Golf balls are often released on two-year product cycles, which means updates are released every two years. For that reason, you will see several 2023 offerings alongside new 2024 putters.

Who it’s For:  Golfers with a driver swing over 105 mph who want more spi and workability.

Bridgestone Tour B RX

The Bridgestone Tour B RX for 2024. (David Dusek/Golfweek)

Who it’s For:  Golfers with a driver swing slower than 105 mph who want more distance.

Excerpt: “Instead of using multiple cores inside each of the four Tour B balls, Bridgestone has designed a gradational core that is very soft in the center and gradually gets firmer toward the perimeter. A firm mid-layer (mantle) is then applied over the core, but in the 2024 Tour B balls, that casing layer does a better job of transferring energy into ball speed.” Read the full review …

Who it’s For:  Golfers with a driver swing slower than 105 mph who want more spin and control.

Who They’re For:  Slow-swinging golfers who want soft feel and more distance.

Excerpt: ” For 2023 the e6 remains a two-piece ball with a large gradient core that is softer in the center and grows gradually firmer toward the outside. This helps create a more efficient energy transfer with long irons, hybrids and woods.” Read the full review …

Who They’re For:  Golfers who want more distance and a straighter ball flight

Excerpt: “The Flexativ material is complemented by a special dimple pattern. The Contact Force dimple pattern is constructed with a series of interlocking hexagonal dimples that have a raised, circular dimple in the center. At impact, 38 percent more surface area of the ball comes into contact with the club face which, according to Bridgestone, helps send more energy into the shot.” Read the full review …

d tour golf

Callaway Chrome Tour. (David Dusek/Golfweek)

Price: $54.99 per dozen Specs:  Four-piece, urethane-covered balls

Who They’re For:  Golfers who want tour-level spin around the greens and maximum distance off the tee.

Excerpt: “Among the premium balls in the Callaway lineup, Chrome Tour likely will have the broadest appeal. Off the tee, it creates speed and spin numbers very similar to Callaway’s Chrome Soft X LS ball, which is being discontinued. However, Chrome Tour has a lower compression (88) than Chrome Soft X LS (93). This gives players the rare instance of softer feel with more speed. “ Read the full review …

Callaway Chrome Tour X

Callaway Chrome Tour X

Callaway Chrome Tour X. (David Dusek/Golfweek)

Price:  $54.99 per dozen Specs:  Four-piece, urethane-covered balls

Excerpt: The Chrome Tour X will have the firmest feel at impact, generate the most spin off the tee and with irons, and produce the most spin around the greens. Golfers who like to draw and fade the ball with their irons may prefer the Chrome Tour X because it spins more than Callaway’s other premium balls.” Read the full review …

Callaway Chrome Soft (2024)

Callaway Chrome Soft. (David Dusek/Golfweek)

Price:   $54.99 per dozen Specs:   Three-piece, urethane-covered ball

Who it’s For:  Golfers who want a soft-feeling ball that delivers high levels of spin around the green.

Excerpt: “Callaway said that for 2024 the updated Chrome Soft generates nearly identical spin off the tee as the 2022 ball, along with the same speed, but updating the hexagonal dimple pattern and altering the ball’s aerodynamics in the 2024 model results in a higher launch so it flies slightly farther.” Read the full review …

Callaway ERC Soft

Price:   $39.99 per dozen Specs:  Three-piece ball with Surlyn cover and urethane coating. Available in white and yellow.

Who it’s For:  Golfers who want distance and a soft feel in a value-oriented ball

Excerpt: “The large HyperElastic SoftFast Core maximizes ball speed off the tee. The core acts as the engine for the ball, but because this core is so large and soft, it also gives the Supersoft a soft feel at impact on every shot, which many golfers prefer.” Read the full review …

PXG Xtreme golf balls

The PXG Xtreme is a three-piece ball with a synthetic rubber core, mantle layer and a urethane cover. (David Dusek/Golfweek)

Price:   $39.99 per dozen Specs:  Three-piece, urethane-covered golf ball

Who it’s For: Golfers who want a premium golf ball that delivers distance off the tee and control around the greens.

Excerpt: “The Xtreme golf ball has a large synthetic rubber core that is surrounded by a firm ionomer mantle layer, which in turn encased by a urethane cover. The idea is that energy created during your full swings will activate the core and create speed, but on slower, partial-swing shots, the softness of the urethane cover will allow the grooves in your wedges and short irons to grab the ball more easily and create spin.” Read the full review …

Srixon Z-Star

Srixon Z-Star 2023

Srixon Z-Star 2023 (David Dusek/Golfweek)

Price:   $47.95 per dozen Specs:  Three-piece construction with a large core, casing layer and urethane cover. Colors: pure white or yellow

Who it’s For:  Golfers who want tour-level spin around the greens and distance.

Excerpt: For 2023, Srixon has improved the Spin Skin coating applied to the cover, referring to it now as Spin Skin+. The coating increases the level of friction created when an iron or wedge hits the ball on greenside shots to boost the level of spin and enhance control on chips, pitches and bunker shots.” Read the full review …

Srixon Z-Star XV 2023

Srixon Z-Star XV 2023 (David Dusek/Golfweek)

Price:   $47.95 per dozen Specs:  Three-piece construction with a large core, casing layer and urethane cover

Who it’s For:  Golfers who want elite-level spin without outstanding distance off the tee.

Excerpt: “The Z-Star Diamond was made to fit between the standard Z-Star and the XV ball, and it has a firmer feel and higher compression than the Z-Star but will feel softer than the Z-Star XV.” Read the full review …

Srixon Q-Star Tour

Srixon Q-Star

Srixon Q-Star ball. (David Dusek/Golfweek)

Price:   $39.99 per dozen Specs:  Three-piece, urethane-covered ball with 74 compression. Available in white, yellow and two-color Divide versions in yellow-blue, yellow/red and yellow/orange.

Who it’s For:  Moderate- and slower-swinging golfers who want distance off the tee and extra spin around the green.

Excerpt: “The core is encased in a firm mantle layer, which in turn is encased by a soft, ultra-thin urethane cover. Srixon used a softer urethane in this generation of the Q-Star Tour, so the grooves in wedges and short irons should be able to grab it more effectively and generate more spin on greenside shots and on shots hit with scoring clubs.” Read the full review …

Srixon Soft Feel

Srixon Soft Feel 2023

Srixon Soft Feel 2023 (David Dusek/Golfweek)

Price:   $22.99 per dozen Specs: Two-piece golf ball with Surlyn cover.

Who it’s For:  Players who don’t want to spend a lot of money on golf balls but want a soft feel and distance off the tee.

Excerpt: “At the heart of this two-piece ball is a large FastLayer core that is soft in the center and gradually grows firmer toward the perimeter. Srixon said the core’s gradient firmness allows it to compress and snap back into shape quickly for a better transfer of energy, which can produce more distance.” Read the full review …

TaylorMade TP5

The five-layer TaylorMade TP5 for 2024. (David Dusek/Golfweek)

Price:   $54.99 per dozen Specs:  Five-piece, urethane-covered golf balls available in white, yellow and Pix patterns.

Who it’s For:  Golfers who want an elite combination of distance off the tee and with long irons, plus greenside spin and a softer feel.

Excerpt: “The Speed Wrap additive makes the balls sound and feel softer, but it does not make the new TP5 and TP5x balls faster. However, TaylorMade golf ball designers were able to make the cores in the 2024 TP5 and TP5x balls firmer, which gives them more speed, while the Speed Wrap softens the sound and feel produced at impact. The result, for most golfers, is a faster ball that also feels and sounds better.” Read the full review …

TaylorMade TP5x

TaylorMade TP5x (2024)

The five-layer TaylorMade TP5x golf ball. (David Dusek/Golfweek)

Who it’s For:  Golfers who want distance off the tee and with long irons, plus greenside spin and a firmer feel.

Excerpt: “On full-swing shots like drivers and 3-woods off the tee, the blunt strike from the club sends energy into the ball, through the mantle layers and into the core, activating it to generate speed and reduce spin. Full-swing shots hit with your short irons and wedges, which have more loft, make the balls behave differently. In those cases, the soft urethane cover can easily be grabbed by the grooves. Along with the added loft, it helps to create more spin for added control.” Read the full review …

Excerpt: “The dual-core Pro V1x was updated for 2023 and given a high-gradient inner core for more long-game speed. Overall spin with woods and long irons is slightly lower in this version, resulting in tighter dispersion downrange. This ball flies higher than the standard Pro V1 and feels firmer.” Read full review …

Who It’s For: Golfers who want a softer feel, lower flight and less spin than a Pro V1 without sacrificing greenside spin.

Excerpt: “On short-iron shots and wedge shots, when the clubhead speed is lower and the impact is made with a more lofted club, the updated AVX’s softer urethane and thicker cover, which is on top of the firm casing layer, can easily be grabbed by the grooves to generate spin. The softer, thicker urethane cover also helps to make the AVX feel softer at impact, even though the ball’s overall compression (80) has not changed.” Read the full review …

Who It’s For:  Golfers who want to maximize greenside spin around the green and get elite distance off the tee.

Excerpt: “The core of each ball is encased in a soft inner mantle that is, in turn, covered by a firmer second mantle layer and then a thin urethane cover. The advantage of the two-mantle design is the softer inner mantle helps to reduce spin off the tee, while the firmer mantle layer helps the grooves in wedges and short irons grab the soft urethane cover more easily, so golfers should be able to create more spin on approach shots, chips and pitches.” Read the full review …
