Springtime can be a magical and refreshing time to travel. Maybe you’re coming out from winter hibernation for a quick road trip, or you’re finally able to break in those new hiking boots you were gifted for Christmas. Personally, I look forward to blooms and greenery after nature wakes up from her winter slumber. Everything feels fresh, new, and exciting.

Here are some of the best places to visit in the USA in the springtime in particular, counting down to my #1 favorite:

29. Mystic Hot Springs, Utah

As one of Utah’s best secret places , if Mystic Hot Springs isn’t on your radar yet, it is about to be! This hippie compound-esque hot spring has old bathtubs that you can soak in, which is a pretty epic mix of rustic and luxuriousness.

Mystic Hot Springs is the springtime destination for you if you’re into getting off the beaten path. The closest town is Monroe, which is even a bit remote in itself. This is the perfect place to unplug, relax, and take in gorgeous sunset views in the comfort of a steamy natural hot spring.

28. Black Rock City, Nevada

Speaking of remote places to visit this spring, here’s Black Rock City. In one of the most remote deserts in the USA, this is where the annual Burning Man festival takes place each year. If you want to experience this incredible slice of wilderness without the festival crowds, head there in the spring and you’ll likely have the place to yourself for as far as you can see.

27. Holland, Michigan

Named after–you guessed it!–Holland, this adorable Midwestern gem replicates its namesake by keeping the tulip tradition alive each spring with its Tulip Festival . The festival happens every May and has been around since 1929 when the town was mostly comprised of Dutch immigrants.

The town has a 250 year-old Dutch windmill that is a must-see if you visit. Being only 30-minutes away from Grand Rapids, you can make Holland a stop on your spring road trip , or make it your primary destination. If you have more motivation and strength, you can go with your own company on a 6-7-hour guided tour through the most interesting and historical highlights of Holland. Either way, Holland, MI is sure to charm you.

26. Hill Country, Texas

While not exactly a singular location, hill country in Texas is more of a strip than a destination. Between Houston and San Antonio along the highways at the big state parks, Blue Bonnets are in bloom everywhere during March and April.

The beauty of the Texan countryside is even more apparent during this time of year, making it a great place to embark on a tour of its popular wineries , or even just a weekend scenic drive.

25. Macon, Georgia

Did you know that Macon is the cherry blossom capital of the world? No, it’s not Japan or Washington, D.C.! With 350,000 cherry trees blossoming each year at the end of March, Macon truly is the perfect place to see these beauties in bloom.

The second or third week of March is peak time to visit, as the International Cherry Blossom Festival happens. It’s known as the “pinkest party of the year!” Macon is full of history and is also surrounded by beautiful state parks for visitors who are looking to get outdoors.

24. Coachella Valley, California

Known as the sunniest place in the USA with 300 days of sunshine per year, Coachella Valley in California is the perfect place to recharge that Vitamin D that you lost during the winter. Each spring, the city hosts an annual Wildflower Festival to celebrate the vibrant colors of the landscape

This area of the California desert is also known for its date production. These sugary-sweet fruits are plentiful here and you can even visit a farm where they are grown to get the inside scoop into how they are harvested.

This is a pretty obvious addition to the list, as D.C. is known worldwide for its plentiful cherry blossoms in the spring. Each year, the city hosts the National Cherry Blossom Festival which attracts visitors from around the world. Immerse yourself in the history of the cherry trees and enjoy the warmer temperatures as the city reawakens after a brisk winter.

Let’s be honest, Hawaii is stunning all year long, rain or shine. However, spring truly is a magical time to fly over to the islands. February to May is known as “shoulder season,” which means the heavy winter rains are over, but the high season hasn’t started yet.

As the thick layers of snow and ice melt in Oregon, the rivers and waterfalls of Columbia Gorge become their fullest as spring sets in. The area becomes alive with the brightly colored wildflowers that bloom during this time of year. Napa Valley is not only known for its wineries , but also for its orchards which are at full bloom in early spring. Apple and apricot trees show off their flowers during this time of year, creating the perfect backdrop for your wine tour adventures.

Not a wine drinker? The area is still beautiful to drive through, especially with all the wildflowers in bloom along the highways.

18. Breckenridge, Colorado

While Breckenridge is most famous for its winter landscapes, March and April are actually the area’s heaviest snowfalls, even though the temperatures are higher and the days are longer. The huge winter crowds have dissipated by springtime, but there is still just as many outdoor activities to enjoy.

This destination is one for snow lovers who aren’t ready to shed their winter layers. Up until May visitors can still snowboard, ski, snowmobile, and much more .

17. Seattle, Washington

All of those heavy winter rains and snows lead to a flower-filled spring in Seattle. From cherry blossoms in March to the Skagit Valley Tulip Festival in April, Seattle has a splendor of spring colors to enjoy. Pike Place market is full of fresh tulips during the spring months which makes it an even more exciting stop while visiting.

Spring is also the start of orca-watching season and the end of gray and humpback season. There are plenty of whale watching tours available this time of year.

Just a couple hours away from Seattle is Port Angeles which is known for the lavender fields in case you want to venture out and take in more of the area’s beautiful spring colors.

16. St. Louis, Missouri

Immerse yourself in the intense baseball fandom as the city comes alive during the opening of the MLB season. Like many bigger cities across the USA, spring is the beginning of outdoor festival season in St. Louis. Each year the city hosts the St. Louis Earth Day Festival which is an exciting way to celebrate this underrated holiday.

Check out the butterfly house at the Missouri Botanical Garden, which is especially beautiful in the springtime, while you make your way around the city.

15. Havasu Falls, Arizona

Spring time at Havasu Falls is warm, but nothing compared to the summer Arizona heat, making it the best time to go. The weather is perfect for attempting the 10-mile Havasupai hike , which would likely be unbearably hot in the summer.

Much of the hike goes through the slot canyon and ends at the falls, where you can camp for the night and go for a swim if it’s warm enough. The waterfall is especially full during this time of year and you can find plenty of wildflowers in bloom in and around the trails.

14. Pigeon Forge, Tennessee

Pigeon Forge in Tennessee is located smack dab in the Smoky Mountains, which is a magical springtime destination in itself. What makes this quaint town special, however, is its unique history and many spring festivals–including Dollywood’s Festival of Nations !

13. Asheville, North Carolina

Asheville is known for being one of the quirkiest cities in the American South, and for good reason! While it has plenty of fun things to do year-round, spring is especially lively here as the outdoor beer gardens begin to open up all around the city.

12. Woodburn, Oregon

Woodburn is another place on this list where tulips are the main attraction. The town is home to the Wooden Shoe Tulip Farm, which hosts a tulip festival from March to May.

Springtime is also the best time to catch a ride on a hot air balloon to see the colorful blooms from above. Afraid of heights? Stay on the ground and enjoy a sip of wine at any of the areas wineries while your pals fly high in the sky.

11. Tucson, Arizona

Because Tucson, Arizona is in the desert, the flowers that bloom there are particularly delicate. The hills around the city are constantly changing color in the spring as different types of wildflowers bloom at different times between February and July. Even the cactuses have bright red flowers!

10. Carlsbad, California

Located in northern San Diego County in California, Carlsbad is an explosion of color in the spring. The Flower Fields at Carlsbad Ranch is the city’s main attraction, with 50 acres of brightly colored Giant Tecolote Ranunculus flowers in full bloom, along with many others.

The ranch is open from March 1 to May 9 and hosts activities such as tractor wagon tours, the artist gardens, and an orchid greenhouse. For lovers of delicious food and trying new things, whole food tours with wine tasting are offered here – truly a springtime paradise!

9. Central Florida Natural Springs

Central Florida is full of gorgeous springs, which are ideal to visit in the spring months. This time of year is warm enough to be able to fully enjoy the springs, but isn’t humid like it is in the summer. Ginnie Springs is particularly popular because of its stunning turquoise waters, kayaking and paddleboarding opportunities , and airboat tours .

About 90 minutes north of Tampa, you can find the Crystal River area, which is the only place in the USA where you can legally swim with manatees, which inhabit the bay from winter to early summer.

8. Charleston, South Carolina

It’s no secret that Charleston is a hub for southern charm, especially in the spring as dogwood trees and azaleas bloom all over the city. The weather is great during this time of year–hanging out around 60-70 degrees with low humidity – ideal weather for both carriage tours and walking tours of the main attractions of the city.

Spring is also the height of festival season in Charleston, including the famous Festival of Houses and Gardens from March to April and the Flowertown Festival in April.

7. Chena Hot Springs, Alaska

The biggest attraction here is the annual migration of birds of prey between mid-April to mid-June.

5. Santa Fe, New Mexico

Santa Fe is another place on this list that boasts some of its best weather in the springtime. The city kicks off its wildflower season with bright yellow forsythias and continues throughout the spring with its famous lilacs.

The popular outdoor market opens back up in April, which is a great place to buy art directly from local artists. Enjoy spring festivals such as the Japanese Cultural Festival and the Santa Fe Pro Musica’s Baroque Holy Week concerts.

4. Red Cliffs, Utah

This desert hidden gem is known as a miniature version of the famous Zion National Park , but packs just as much of a punch. Spring is the ideal time to go, as the previously-dry red rock canyons fill with water and become gushing waterfalls during this time of year. The entire Recreation Area becomes alive during spring with vibrant wildflowers as well.

3. Philadelphia, Pennsylvania

Being such a big city, Philly is full of things to do all year round. However, spring is an exceptionally great time to get out and enjoy the city’s architecture, outdoor festivals, and museums .

Each spring, the city hosts its own Cherry Blossom Festival, as well as both the Philly Wine Week and Philly Beer Week. As the temperatures rise, get outside and take in Philly’s iconic street art and see the city from the perspective of an artist.

2. Historic Triangle, Virginia

The Historic Triangle in Virginia is made up of Jamestown, Yorktown, and Williamsburg. There are plenty of flowers in bloom in the area and plenty of history to uncover. There are five main attractions in the Historic Triangle , including the first permanent English settlement at Jamestown. It’s a great opportunity to get out in the sunshine and take a walk from place to place, as everything is close together in each location.

The weather is usually nice and warm already with fewer tourist crowds compared to summer, which makes spring one of the best times to visit Paris.

On top of that, seeing the blooming flowers all around Paris is an unforgettable experience. Just think about magnolias and cherry blossoms (end of March/beginning of April), wisterias (end of April), or roses (mid-May)!

If you’re looking for the  best photography spots in Paris  during this season, head over to Jardin des Tuileries, Jardin des Plantes, and of course, the Eiffel Tower!

When in Paris, you can’t miss taking a stroll along the Seine River, exploring the world-famous Musée du Louvre, and window shopping on the Champs-Élysées.

VENICE, ITALY

I adore Venice at any time of year, but spring is my favorite time to visit. In springtime, the weather is warming up after winter but is still pleasantly cool without the humidity of July and August.

There are far fewer crowds than in the busier summer months, and as the days grow longer, you have more time to admire the beauty of Venice.

It is a perfect time to wander the pretty streets, take a gondola ride, and enjoy the  delicious food in Venice  without battling hordes of tourists.

It is also easier to explore the neighboring islands of Murano, Burano, and Lido, as the Vaporetto water buses are less crowded, and you are more likely to be able to sit down and enjoy the journey across the Venice lagoon.

As for where to stay, prices are likely to be cheaper in spring too, before the peak summer season pushes up the rates.

ATHENS, GREECE

BRUGES, BELGIUM

Palermo is the capital of the always sunny island of Sicily in the south of Italy. It is the perfect spot if you are craving a spring break in Europe and looking to top up on vitamin D.

Italy is renowned for its fabulous food – the best in the world according to many. Make sure to fill up on the traditional pizza and pasta, but save some room for the typical Sicilian street food when traveling in Palermo.

Stop by the  Antica Focacceria San Francesco  to munch on a typical Arancina (fried rice balls containing ragu or if you are a vegetarian –  a la norma ).

When planning your Budapest itinerary , don’t forget to include landmarks like Fisherman’s Bastion, the Great Synagogue , and the Hungarian Parliament Building, unique activities like street art hunting and Jewish history tours, museums, and cozy cafes .

Prague is one of the best European cities to visit in spring.

This season, especially  Prague in March and April , is a delightful time to indulge in off-season travel, hang out at Easter markets, and enjoy seasonal festivities and events.

When Easter week comes, you must go Easter egg hunting in Prague’s Easter Markets like the Velikonocni Trhy.

You can also visit a cathedral and take part in choirs and ceremonies. Festivals and events also include a farmer’s market and a film festival.

Visiting off-season, you can easily explore the city center’s attractions with fewer crowds.

Be sure to visit the Astronomical Clock Tower, Kinksy Palace, Charles Bridge, and the beautiful Prague Castle. These sites will not be busy as compared to the peak summer months.

BELGRADE, SERBIA

The Bachle is unique to Freiburg. It is a series of small open waterways that flow through the city. Another local sight is the Freiburg Minster, which has been standing since the 12th century.

You can take a cable car from the city center to Schlossberg Hill, from where you will get some fantastic views of the city stretching into the mountains surrounding.

The mild weather is also great for visiting The Mundlehof, an open-air zoo and green zone where people walk and eat at the beer garden.

Freiburg is a lively city with many cafes, bars, beer gardens, and restaurants. Food in Freiburg has a German and French feel, and you should try the Flamkussen and Bratwurst, which are regional specialties.

Day trips to Colmar , Strasbourg, Basel, and Titisee are all doable in under an hour from Freiburg.

LOIRE DEPARTMENT , FRANCE

Spring is perfect for offbeat destinations in France: the crowds haven’t yet arrived, and nature is in bloom.

But spring can also mean variable weather, and one destination that offers both indoor and outdoor experiences is  the Loire department  – not to be confused with the nearby Loire Valley.

The Loire department (number 42 in France’s numbering system) is a network of delightful villages, medieval churches, Renaissance chateaux, and quirky museums. One such chateau is the Bâtie d’Urfé, built in the 16th century, and inspired by the owner’s trip to Italy .

He also built a grotto, which is unique in France, and made entirely of shells, sand, and pebbles.

Beyond this chateau are the delightful villages of Ambierle and St-Haon-le-Chatel, with winding streets and ancient architecture, ideal for strolling.

If the weather shifts to rain or cooler temperatures, some of the area’s fun museums are the perfect refuge – the Hat Museum, for example, which keeps felting traditions alive, or the Silk Museum, which does the same for silk.

CAUCASUS REGION, ARMENIA/AZERBAIJAN/GEORGIA

The Caucasus is a wonderful region to put on your bucket list of the best European spring destinations. It includes Armenia, Azerbaijan, and Georgia, as well as the North Caucasus.

The reason this region inspires during the springtime is that winter moves out of the area and flowers are all over the place, making it colorful and lively once again.

You will find that the  waterfalls in Armenia , Georgia, and Azerbaijan are gushing after the snow melts in the mountains, and many holidays are celebrated in the region during this time.

Another perk of visiting during spring is that the region suffers from extremely hot temperatures during summer, and spring is comfortable and offers a pleasurable city experience regardless of whether you’re in Baku, Tbilisi, or Yerevan.

Spring is also a great time for events and festivals in the Southern Caucasus.

Baku hosts many events, including the Formula1 Races in April, Armenia has festivals such as Urvakan Music Fest and Yerevan Wine Days in May, and Georgia has a fantastic International Folk Festival.

ALSACE, FRANCE

Although it is known as a magical Christmas destination, the Alsace Wine Route is ideal for a spring trip. This is the oldest wine route in France, boasting carpets of vineyards dotted with storybook medieval villages, exquisite wineries, and old castle ruins.

Spring is the time when the scenery here is vibrantly green, the sky is clear, the weather is pleasant, and the Kutzig tourist bus, which lets you explore Alsace’s most famous villages without a car , starts operating again.

Those include the lovely Colmar and the dreamy Riquewihr, Kaysersberg, and Eguiseim, to name a few.

You should, of course, also have some wine tastings in the local wineries (I LOVED Freudenreich Joseph et Fils in Eguisheim), visit landmarks like the Haut-Koenigsbourg castle, and even engage in activities like hiking and cycling.

You can also spend a couple of days in the beautiful city of Strasbourg, exploring its UNESCO-listed historic center, enjoying its culinary scene, and strolling through the intriguing Neustadt district.

DEVON, ENGLAND

Devon in south England is one of the prettiest and best places to visit in Europe in spring.

Trees are green and lush and all the spring flowers are in bloom – thousands of daffodils, tulips, and bluebells.  You can also easily find cozy lodges in Devon , as well as other fantastic accommodations.

If you’d like to walk in a forest that is full of bluebells, head to Buzzards Woods, a National Trust-managed property. Parking is free and you can roam for hours, mesmerized by the sea of blue.

If you like flowers, this is also the time to add Dartmoor and the Dunsford Nature Reserve to your  Devon Road Trip itinerary  – famous for the wild daffodils that grow in abundance.

If you’re lucky, you’ll also see baby deer, chicks, and other wildlife coming out to enjoy the warmer weather. 

You should also visit Devon in springtime for the food festivals. One of the biggest is the Exeter Festival of South-West Food and Drink, set on the grounds of Exeter Castle Courtyard and Northernhay Gardens.

Producers from around the region bring their best delicacies, and there are awards and demonstrations throughout. The Festival usually happens in early May.

LOFOTEN ISLANDS, NORWAY

Spring in the Lofoten Islands differs from year to year, but one thing is for certain – it is stunning!

In some seasons, the winter in Lofoten will last until only March, and in other seasons, it will stick around until May.

However, one of the biggest perks of visiting Lofoten during spring is that the northern lights are still around, and you don’t have the midnight sun (or polar nights).

You can beat the crowds and witness them with cheaper prices and small tour groups.

Another advantage is that you can start the hiking and surfing season again. Unstad Arctic Surf in Bøstad is open and ready to teach visitors to surf these Arctic waves with ease.

You can also rent a car and travel around the islands very easily with less traffic on the roads during spring.

Some of the best places to visit and things to do in the Lofoten Islands during this time of year are Henningsvær, a fishing village with peaceful views and a charming harbor, horseback riding under the northern lights with Hovgård on Gimsøy, and experiencing the luxury of the Lofoten Rørbuer, fisherman cabins converted into accommodation.

PUGLIA, ITALY

If you want to enjoy one of Italy’s most popular summer spots but prefer to travel when there are much fewer crowds, Puglia in spring is for you.

This southern region is known for its pretty coastal towns (like Poignano a Mare) and dreamy beaches, though inland, you’ll find lovely countryside and must-see towns like Alberobello (and its unique Trulli houses) and Locorotondo.

It’s also the biggest producer of olive oil and one of the best yet undiscovered wine regions in Italy, and not surprisingly, the food here is absolutely incredible, offering typical dishes such as orecchiette with broccoli rabe, T iella (a baked delicacy made with rice, potatoes, and mussels), and spaghetti all ‘ assassina .

If you’re not looking to go for a swim, you can even visit Puglia in March , but the weather gets more pleasant in late spring.

TICINO, SWITZERLAND

Surrounded by the Southern Alps, Ticino has a warmer climate than the rest of Switzerland, which makes spring come here earlier.

RHODOPES REGION, BULGARIA

The Rhodopes region encompasses Rhodopes Mountain, which is the largest mountain in Bulgaria. It is about 240 km long and 100 to 120 km wide. The average altitude of Rhodopes Mountain is 785 meters. 

The Rhodopes region is home to many dams where locals love to go camping, karst areas, deep river gorges, large caves, and some of the most  charming villages to visit in Bulgaria .

The Waterfalls Canyon, close to the city of Smolyan, is perfect for a spring trip. The rains and the melted snow make the water levels high, so everything is green, and the trees are blooming. 

Thracian tribes inhabited the Rhodopes for centuries and have left a rich cultural heritage. Many remains of their culture can be seen, including the ancient sites of Belintash, Perperikon, and Tatul.

The best way to explore the Rhodopes region is by car. Some places are very remote, and as an alternative, you can visit them on a hike or by bike (the Rhodopes are one of the best places for mountain biking in the country).

PROVENCE, FRANCE

From late March, the landscape in Provence comes alive after a dormant winter, and spring blossoms and colorful crops fill the fields once again.

It starts with the delicate almond blossom before vibrant yellow rapeseed fills the scene, and then the region’s famed poppies take center stage.

But it’s not just the countryside that comes to life.

Spring is the season of  brocantes  – flea markets (including one of the biggest antique fairs in Europe – held in L’isle-sur-la-Sorgue), art exhibitions (such as the nationwide Journées des Métiers d’Art), and food festivals.

Everything from strawberries to goat’s cheese has its own place on the calendar, and attending these local festivities is a fabulous way of experiencing local life.

The weather is typically warm in spring, making it perfect for visiting the famed farmer’s markets, hiking the  Calanques , visiting the  region’s wineries , and exploring the charming streets of its villages and towns.

ANDALUCIA, SPAIN

Being the hottest region in Spain, Andalucia is an ideal destination for a European spring trip.

Steeped in history, it provides an opportunity to step back in time in the most stunning cities and their UNESCO-listed landmarks while also enjoying the beauty of white-washed villages and natural landscapes.

In the city of Granada, you can visit the magnificent Alhambra – a royal complex dating back to Moorish times, stroll through the historic neighborhoods of Sacromonte and Albayzín, and marvel at the cathedral.

Spring is an ideal time to visit as the weather is much better than in the winter and you’ll get all of the natural beauty with almost none of the crowds.

NORTHERN IRELAND

For many, spring is the  best time to visit Northern Ireland , as it marks the beginning of the tourist season with the reopening of many of the country’s scenic tourist attractions.

This includes the opening of many gardens and tours of historic homes and manors, many of which are run by the National Trust.

Northern Ireland is also a compact and close-knit country to explore, so a road trip is perfect at this time of the year through the many gardens and homes.

Some of the more popular attractions include the Hillsborough Castle and Gardens, which is the official residence in Northern Ireland of the Queen and Royal Family.

Other visit-worthy National Trust properties are the gardens of Mount Stewart, Castle Ward (famous as the filming location of Winterfell in the Game of Thrones), and Rowallane Gardens.

LATGALE REGION, LATVIA

Not many people may have heard of the  Latgale region in Eastern Latvia , a wonderful destination for nature lovers. Latgale is especially known for its many lakes.

The largest is Lake Lubans, an excellent birdwatching destination located on the migration route between Scandinavia and Southern Europe.

There are also many more outdoor experiences you can enjoy – paddleboarding to the ruins of Koknese Castle, kayaking along interconnected lakes, and mountain biking to a village of Old Believers (a religious Russian Orthodox minority with a unique culture and cuisine).

The main town in the region is Daugavpils, known for its fortress and for being the birthplace of the artist Mark Rothko. There is now a museum and arts center dedicated to him in the fortress, where you can also spend the night.

Spring is the perfect time to enjoy Latgale, as the weather is generally nice and sunny, the flowers are in bloom, and it’s a great time for birdwatching!

CINQUE TERRE, ITALY

April and May are the perfect months to visit the Cinque Terre. The weather is warm, but it gets dark at around 5 pm, and it can sometimes rain.

This means that getting out onto the sea and lazing on the tiny harbor beaches of the Cinque Terre is lovely in the middle of the day.

This UNESCO World Heritage Site is best discovered by walking and hiking. Above  Vernazza  and the other five villages are hiking paths through orchards, olive groves, and medieval fortifications and castles.

Walking and hiking through the villages is one of the best activities in the Cinque Terre as much of the beauty comes from the colorful houses and the winding cobblestone streets.

The Cinque Terre is best accessed by train – the railway winds along the coastline and through tunnels and is an exciting way to arrive at these beautiful villages.

DURMITOR NATIONAL PARK, MONTENEGRO

Montenegro is a small country with different landscapes. Spring is the best time to experience its Adriatic coast, its stunning rugged mountains, and the limestone peaks of the Durmitor National Park.

Durmitor is a breathtaking national park formed by glaciers and is traversed by rivers and underground streams. The best way to see it is by renting a car and going on a road trip.

Start from the capital of Podgorica and continue going up to Durmitor Park. The park has about fifty peaks higher than 2,000 meters above sea level with alpine meadows and forests, glacial lakes, and spectacular canyons.

Many endemic animals can be found in the park too. The Tara River Gorge, Europe’s deepest gorge can also be found here. You can hike, camp, swim in the lakes, go mountaineering and canoeing, and enjoy the beauty of nature.

ALGARVE REGION, PORTUGAL

The sunny Algarve region in the south of Portugal is a perfect destination for a spring vacation in Europe. The Algarve is famous for its beautiful sandy beaches, hidden bays and coves, warm turquoise color water, and delicious seafood.

Spring is the best time to visit the Algarve – sunny warm days, not too many tourists, thousands of spring flowers cover the fields along the coast , and hundreds of storks are nesting on the edges of the cliffs.

April and May are the best months for outdoor activities in the region. There are many  breathtaking hiking trails  along the coast, a couple of great surfing and kitesurfing spots, and several cycling routes with picturesque views.

Spring isn’t the high season in the Algarve, which means there will be plenty of accommodation options for a reasonable price, unlike during the summer holiday season.

There is an international airport in Faro, the region’s capital, and most smaller towns can be reached by daily public buses from Lisbon. 

MORAY SPEYSIDE, SCOTLAND

Over 150 miles north of both Edinburgh and Glasgow, Speyside can be reached by car or train. The region is a must for those who travel for food, nature, and history.

Famous for being home to the highest concentration of whisky distilleries in Scotland, you can sample numerous whiskies by traveling the world’s only Malt Whisky Trail.

For lovers of nature and history, the Speyside region features rolling hillsides, crystal blue rivers, and, of course, castles. There are plenty of opportunities to explore Speyside on foot via the Speyside Way, a 60+ mile-long walking route.

Scotland’s food  doesn’t always have the best reputation. In Speyside, chefs are using incredible ingredients from the land and sea to rewrite what people know about Scottish food.

It's that time of year when our bodies and minds begin screaming for a vacation, unleashing a deep desire to defrost from the winter chill and all the burdens that come with it. While we'd argue there's never a bad time of the year to book that plane ticket—spring 2024 is looking like an especially good one.

That's because airfares are becoming much more affordable compared to last year; average airfares for March are down 3% compared to 2023, and April airline tickets are 8% cheaper than last year, according to data from travel search site Kayak .

While airfares are down across the board, some destinations offer a better deal than others. So, we asked travel search and booking sites for their latest intel on destinations where airfares are dropping for March and April. Whether you’re craving a beach getaway or you’re in need of a city visit to soak up art and culture, there’s an affordable spring destination for you.

Here are seven destinations—both international and domestic—you can visit this spring without blowing your travel budget, according to the latest data. From US and Canadian urban hubs to coastal getaways in Mexico , the Caribbean, and Central America , the results might surprise you.

Nashville, Tennessee

For a budget-friendly getaway this spring, consider heading to Nashville: Average airfare to the bustling country music haven is just $277 round-trip in March, according to Kayak's data. Aside from Honky Tonk Row, the famous lineup of live music joints and dance halls along Broadway, there’s plenty else to explore in Music City. Pop into the National Museum of African American Music or the Jefferson Street Sound Museum to learn about the history of the city’s Black music scene, then take a guided tour of RCA Studio B —where icons like Elvis recorded their albums—and the Country Music Hall of Fame.

Take advantage of the price drops by booking a flight to Belize City, where airfares are averaging $546 from the US, data from Priceline says. With your savings, continue onto a puddle-jumper flight to Placencia and book a suite at one of the luxe beachfront resorts on the peninsula.

Montréal, Canada

Looking to visit a city with a thriving culinary scene and plenty of art and culture? Book a visit to Montréal , where airfares for March are averaging only $361 roundtrip, Kayak says. Although March is still quite chilly in Québec’s largest city, the crowds will be much thinner compared to the warmer summer months. There are plenty of museums to tour, like the show-stopping Museum of Fine Arts, and quaint cafés to warm up in. Cozy winter attractions, like the iconic skating rink in the Esplanade Tranquille, are still on offer in March, and the month is prime sugar-shack season , when maple syrup is harvested and all things maple-flavored are featured on restaurant menus.

Spring is the perfect time to pay a visit to the city’s Manatee Viewing Center, when the docile sea cows migrate to the refuge’s warmer waters.

Vancouver, Canada

If you can’t decide between an outdoor-focused getaway and a city-based vacation, Vancouver could be your perfect destination. February is here. The weather is getting warmer (we swear!). Summer isn’t too far off. But first? Spring break.

After long nights and gray days, the wonderful tradition of escaping the grind to somewhere usually warm and always fun lets you shake off those winter blues and look forward to the idylls to come. And spring break means much more than just flights to Florida – a place we adore, but whose population swells a bit too much for our taste each spring.

Read on for a range of destinations that you might not have thought of for the annual March/April getaway. They’re all long on fun – without the raucous college partiers. Here’s our list of the best spring break destinations for 2024.

1. Asheville, North Carolina, USA

Southern charm, a live-and-let-live creative community and plenty of outdoor possibilities make Asheville one of the USA ’s most appealing places to visit – for spring break and beyond. This small city in the Appalachian foothills has the highest concentration of breweries of any place in the country, while its award-winning food scene ranges from Southern classics at Tupelo Honey to mouthwatering Spanish tapas at local favorite Cúrate .

While in Asheville, it’s hard to resist a visit to the largest mansion in the US, the Biltmore . And active spring breakers will have plenty to seek out, too: you’re at the threshold of Great Smoky Mountains National Park – the most visited one in the entire country – with miles of trails for hiking, mountain biking or spotting wildlife like black bears, elk and red-bellied woodpeckers. Outdoorsy types can also take to the peaceful French Broad River for kayaking and stand-up paddleboarding.

2. Phoenix, Arizona, USA

Unless you really like the desert sun, we’d recommend skipping Phoenix , Arizona in the summer months. But late winter and early spring in the Arizona desert ? Now we’re talking. Besides the sunny but not too hot weather, Phoenix offers plenty of options to unwind , whether your idea of spring break means getting your vitamin D while playing outdoors or soaking it up along with a few cocktails at your nearest bar patio.

While in town, admire the array of succulents, cacti and other native plants at the Desert Botanical Garden . In downtown Phoenix, stroll the Roosevelt Row Arts District, with stops at galleries and record stores. After you’ve caught one of Phoenix’s technicolored desert sunsets, hole up at late-night haunts with great rooftop patios like the Grapevine for karaoke, or Valley Bar and Crescent Ballroom for cocktails, live music, DJ sets or arty community parties.

3. Big Bend National Park, Texas, USA

Deep in the heart of Texas , the skies don’t get wider and the nights starrier than in Big Bend National Park , the…star attraction of the wide-open western part of the state. And in early spring, a blue layer sets in, as thousands of wildflowers (depending on the year’s rainfall) make the desert bloom.

Lovers of the outdoors will find endless opportunities among the park’s 1250 sq miles (3237 sq km) of scrubland and low mountains – think hiking and camping, or even just (very) scenic drives. To best experience the park’s grandeur, arrange a day (or more) of paddling on the Rio Grande, through Santa Elena Canyon, where rugged limestone cliffs plunge to the narrow water below – a thrilling cathedral of nature.

4. Los Angeles, California, USA

While you can find sun, sand and surf at countless spring break destinations, you’ll enjoy people-watching like nowhere else at the urban beaches of Los Angeles . Sun-kissed California girls and boys frolic in the waves of wholesome  Santa Monica , while colorful characters keep it real on the boardwalk of  Venice Beach . Insiders – and especially surfers – know to head further south to Hermosa and Manhattan Beaches for a more low-key scene. And the sprawling dunes of  Malibu provide a taste a nature just a few miles from the clamor of the city.

5. Hawai‘i (the Big Island), Hawaii, USA

Hawaii ’s largest island offers huge pleasures all year long. Yet March marks the end of the high season in this tropical state, and budget travelers can usually find (relative) discounts for getaways to the Big Island . Trek up toward snow-capped peaks , wander through a verdant Kona coffee farm and watch the island get just a little bit bigger at one of the longest-running volcanic eruptions anywhere in the world. Expect much more than a mere beach getaway.

6. Culebra and Vieques, Puerto Rico

Off the east coast of pearl-like Puerto Rico , look forward to white sands, sparkling blue sea, slow living – and not an all-inclusive resort in sight. Tiny Culebra is home to the extraordinary expanse of Playa Flamenco , one of the best beaches in the entire Caribbean ; at Playa Carlos Rosario , snorkeling with sea turtles is an experience you’ll never forget. Larger and skinnier yet just as languid, nearby Vieques has myriad beaches to traverse. Its crown jewel is Bahía Mosquito , an astonishing bioluminescent bay. Venture out on an after-dark kayak trip to witness one of nature’s best magic shows, as microscopic organisms glow in the dark below the surface, making the water glitter.

7. Whistler, Canada

If skis appeal more than surfboards for a spring escape, head to the world-famous resort town of Whistler , British Columbia . Come March, the peak season wanes, and the mountains begin to offer up discounts to keep the momentum going. At this point in the season, the days are longer and the skies clearer – but months of winter weather have ensured a solid snowpack for run after run. For 360-degree views of the glorious scenery, take a ride in the Peak 2 Peak Gondola , a 2.75-mile (4.4km) feat of engineering that connects the peaks of Whistler and Blackcomb Mountains. At lower elevations, hikes through conifer forests might have you spotting the area’s black bears as they emerge from hibernation.

8. Southern Baja California, Mexico

Catch a plane to Los Cabos – then immediately head north, away from the cluster of tourist resorts. A short distance up the sparsely populated Pacific Coast of Baja California Sur , nature beckons. The weather is ideal in the spring, and the beautiful coastline offers the chance to see sea lions, kayak through turquoise waters, go whale watching (the season ends in March) and even help with turtle conservation, all of which will allow you to return home with ecological bragging rights rather than drinking stories.

9. El Tunco, El Salvador

One of Central America ’s least visited but most intriguing countries, El Salvador has lately been attracting new attention from visitors from all over. This small but mighty place tempts with mountain hikes, sunny beach days and surfing galore – and with frequent nonstop flights between many cities in the USA and San Salvador , it’s easy to pack it all into an itinerary lasting just a few days.

The waves hit El Salvador’s rocky coast especially intensely at El Tunco, a small village that’s become a major stop on the world’s surfing circuit. At any given moment, dozens of surfers are catching gnarly breaks just beyond the shoreline. On land, sun-kissed visitors toast to an active day on the waves at the town’s lively collection of beachfront restaurants and bars.

10. Rio de Janeiro, Brazil

Grab your passport, your sunscreen and the skimpiest bathing suit you own and head to one of South America ’s premier destinations. In addition to its famous beaches, Rio de Janeiro has something to offer every type of spring breaker: stunning panoramas, fantastic food and a variety of outdoor adventures that will make for a getaway to remember.

Set up camp on Ipanema Beach to see and be seen, or join the ranks of other tourists on Copacabana ’s hotel-lined oceanfront. Take the cable car up to Pão de Açúcar (Sugarloaf Mountain) or bask in the colossal shadow of Cristo Redentor atop Corcovado by day. Then hit the bar scene in Botafogo or party to the sounds of samba in the clubs of Lapa by night. You might not want to come back home.

11. The Galápagos Islands, Ecuador

How about an island getaway for spring break with crowds of tortoises instead of college kids? Remote yet worth every effort to get to, the Galápagos Islands , home to some of the earth’s rarest and most unique flora and fauna, are the answer for nature-loving, adventure-seeking travelers.

With a minimal human footprint, Galápagos (part of Ecuador ) has unmatched biodiversity – endemic species such as giant tortoises, marine iguanas and blue-footed boobies roam the islands at ranges close enough to interact with. Go surfing, kayaking, biking or scuba diving near the town of Puerto Baquerizo Moreno on Isla San Cristóbal , or snorkel alongside stingrays, turtles and the occasional shark at Devil’s Crown, one of the archipelago’s most outstanding marine sites. Get your Zen on with Yoga on the Beach , which offers donation-based classes, or embark on a boat tour of the harbor before noshing on fresh seafood at Bearflag Fish Co. or grabbing a latte at Philz. At the end of your action-packed day by the beach, watch the sun slip into the ocean while sipping craft cocktails at Offshore 9 Rooftop Lounge or the Treehouse Lounge .

Then, keep the good vibes going at party-centric eateries like Kiki on the River or Bâoli Miami . The night is still young, though: From there, go club-hopping at LIV , E11EVEN or Basement . Alternatively, those who prefer to party during the day can check out Nikki Beach , Strawberry Moon , Oasis or Hyde Beach .

7.  Best for skiers: Reno Tahoe, NE

It’s not too late to enjoy a spring ski vacation, so as long as you know where to go. That said, look no further than Nevada’s Reno Tahoe region, which is near several ski hotspots —most notably Lake Tahoe , comprised of six ski resorts complete with fun for all experience levels plus some seriously stunning lake views—and makes the perfect home base. Beyond the slopes, travelers can hike to nearby Monkey Rock (flanked by postcard-worthy vistas and towing trees), grab a bite at the Reno Public Market (where you’ll find everything from BBQ to ramen) or enjoy some indoor fun at the interactive Terry Lee Wells Nevada Discovery Museum . Animal lovers of all ages also need not miss the Animal Ark Wildlife Sanctuary . Open seasonally from March through November, the sanctuary is home to majestic creatures like wolves and bears.

Georgia’s oldest city is nothing short of charming with its leafy public squares and parks, many of which are full of lush magnolias, palmettos, crepe myrtles and sycamore trees. This, combined with the city’s historic architecture—styles range from Federal and Georgian to Greek Revival and Gothic Revival—only adds to the romantic atmosphere. Upon visiting with my husband last February, we practically fell in love with Savannah the moment we arrived. One of my favorite memories was strolling along the river hand in hand with frozen daiquiris from nearby Wet Willie’s . For a truly memorable date night, reserve a table at The Olde Pink House to enjoy classic southern fare in a historic Colonial-style mansion.

9.  Best for art lovers: Santa Fe, NM

Located in the foothills of the Sangre de Cristo mountains, this dynamic destination dates back to the 1600s. It’s also home to one of the country's most eclectic art, architecture and design scenes. In addition to its adobe landmarks, including the historic Plaza, Santa Fe has over 250 galleries and studios to explore. Start by making your way down Canyon Road, lined with over 100 galleries, shops and boutiques. The Railyard District is another hotspot for art lovers, as is the Shidoni Gallery and Sculpture Gardens. If museums are more your thing, don’t sleep on the New Mexico Museum of Art on the Plaza or The Museum of Indian Arts and Culture .

10.  Best for a city escape: New York, NY

Maybe I’m a bit biased, but in my opinion, there’s no place like New York. What’s more, the concrete jungle offers something for everyone. World-class entertainment and music theater? Check. Fascinating history and culture? You bet. Cuisine from dozens, if not hundreds, of countries? Of course. Whether you’re a first-time visitor or an NYC veteran, don’t sleep on iconic—albeit tourist-heavy—sites like Central Park, The Met, the 9/11 Memorial & Museum and the Brooklyn Bridge. Also, the Big Apple comprises four additional boroughs outside of Manhattan, each of which is well worth exploring. Finally, for the best city views, head to one of these rooftop bars .

This Florida airport had the most delays: The best, worst airports for spring break travel

Nothing can ruin a spring break getaway faster than encountering a travel disruption at the airport.

Half of all travelers with spring break plans are “concerned” about disruptions impacting their travel plans, according to travel platform Hopper’s 2024 Spring Break Travel Outlook . 

The report said last year saw a higher-than-average volume of disruptions. During spring break, 20.1% of flights were delayed, compared to 18.4% throughout 2023.

For smooth travels, aGamble analyzed flight departure data from the U.S. Bureau of Transportation Statistics to see which airports had the most disruptions during March and April 2023 – the usual spring break period. Disruptions included delays, cancellations and diversions.

“With spring break officially kicking off, airports are expected to be crowded throughout the coming weeks, and travelers may face flight disruptions depending on their departure location,” Collin Czarnecki, a researcher for aGamble, told USA TODAY in an email.

“It might not be surprising that a majority of airports with the most flight disruptions are located in spring break destination hotspots such as Fort Lauderdale, Orlando, Las Vegas, and Miami,” Czarnecki said. On the other hand, the airports with the best on-time departures during the spring break period last year were Pittsburgh International Airport in Pittsburgh and Portland International Airport in Oregon.

Czarnecki also added that the second and third week of March will be the busiest at security checkpoints, so be sure to arrive at the airport with ample time.

• Newark Liberty International in Newark, New Jersey – 25.81% of flights delayed, 2.53% canceled
• Dallas-Forth Worth International – 25.11% of flights delayed, 2.49% canceled
• Denver International – 26.51% of flights delayed, 1.04% canceled
• John F. Kennedy International in New York – 25.06% of flights delayed, 2.23% canceled

Every year, I eagerly anticipate the arrival of spring, not just for the longer days and stunning blooms, but for the opportunity to reintroduce layers and vibrant colors into my wardrobe. And with the weather warming up, New Yorkers are outside more than ever, and unknowingly creating the season's biggest trends.

As a travel writer with a love for all things fashion, I've been keeping a close eye on what’s in store for spring fashion, surveying everything from the fashion week catwalks and red carpets to the streets of Soho. Naturally, I’ve been finding ways to build outfits around these trends on my recent (and upcoming) trips, and have narrowed them all down eight ones that’ll supplement any wardrobe for my fellow fashion-savvy travelers.

I can’t pinpoint when it exactly happened, but denim is back and it's better than ever. It's not like the fabric ever technically left the fashion scene, but retailers and designers are putting it at the forefront of their catalogs, highlighting the timeless power that a great pair of jeans, a denim jacket, or a jumpsuit has.
