What is travel insurance?

Travel insurance is a type of insurance that protects individuals and families from specific financial losses that occur before, during or after a trip. The exact coverages you get from a travel insurance plan can vary greatly, as can coverage levels, limits and deductible requirements.

Still, it's possible to set up a travel insurance plan that reimburses you when a trip has to be canceled for reasons beyond your control, or to secure coverage that will pay for medical bills and emergency transportation if you become ill or injured during your vacation. Some travel insurance plans can also reimburse you for lost, damaged or delayed baggage or other expenses that occur as a result.

What are the types of travel insurance?

As you shop around for travel insurance, you will quickly notice that different types of coverage and limits are included in different plans. That's due to the fact that some travel insurance plans are more comprehensive than others and some travel insurance providers include more types of protection in their policies overall.

Trip cancellation insurance

Trip cancellation coverage reimburses you for prepaid travel expenses when your trip is canceled for a reason beyond your control. Examples of this include canceling due to illness of someone who planned to go on the trip or the death of an immediate family member.

Trip interruption insurance

This kind of coverage applies when your trip is interrupted after you depart but a covered situation is preventing you from moving forward. You might be able to use a trip interruption benefit if you become injured or ill after your trip begins and you need to return home or if a natural disaster prevents you from reaching your destination.

Emergency medical expense coverage

This kind of coverage pays for emergency medical (and potentially dental) expenses that occur when you're away from home and your own health insurance does not apply.

Daniel Durazo of Allianz Partners USA says this may be the most important coverage for consumers to purchase, particularly if someone on the policy ends up in a situation requiring medical care that needs immediate out-of-pocket payment. This is common overseas, where it’s common to have to pay for services before leaving the hospital.

“That’s why choosing a travel insurance policy with appropriate medical benefits is a smart move,” he advised.

Emergency evacuation and transportation coverage

According to Durazo, medical evacuation and transportation costs can easily range from $15,000 to $200,000 (or more) depending on the traveler’s health condition and where they are in the world. This is why another important type of coverage is emergency evacuation, which could be required if you become sick or injured in a remote area and need an ambulance, helicopter or plane to get you to the nearest medical facility.

Also note that emergency medical evacuation coverage may pay for transportation back to your home country if it’s deemed medically necessary.

Trip delay coverage

Trip delay coverage can pay for unexpected expenses that pop up when your trip is delayed for a specific length of time — usually six or 12 hours. This kind of coverage can reimburse you for meals, accommodations, communication and transportation costs you may pay while waiting for your trip to depart.

Insurance for lost, stolen or delayed baggage

Many travel insurance plans also cover financial losses due to baggage that is lost, stolen or delayed while in the care of a common carrier like an airline. Insurance for lost or stolen baggage can reimburse you (up to limits) for your baggage and personal effects, whereas delayed baggage insurance can reimburse you for incidental expenses that arise while you wait for your bags to show up.

What does travel insurance cover?

What travel insurance plans cover can vary from plan to plan, which is why you'll want to read over your policy details and the fine print so you know for sure. That said, it's important to remember that travel insurance is for unforeseeable events or situations beyond your control that you can’t predict.

This means you can't use travel insurance to pay for costs resulting from routine health care, or wait to buy travel insurance for a beach trip after a named hurricane is already in the area. However, there are a number of instances where it does apply.

  • Weather or worker delays: Some travel insurance policies offer reimbursement for trips interrupted by worker strikes or the weather, which are both issues beyond your control.
  • Sickness, injury or death: An illness, injury or death of a loved one might require a trip cancellation. With the right coverage, however, you can get reimbursed for prepaid travel expenses like airfare, hotels and tours.
  • Work-related interruptions: If work interferes with your ability to travel, you may be able to cancel and get your money back with the right coverage. The same is true if you become unemployed and can no longer afford to take your planned trip.

Travel insurance can make up the difference in the following situations:

  • Emergency evacuation: If you suffer from a medical emergency during a trip, your travel insurance may cover medical and ambulance (and even evacuation by plane) expenses.
  • Dental coverage: A dental emergency may not be immediately life-threatening, but it can certainly ruin a vacation. Be sure that your dental coverage protects you where you’re visiting, or consider including it in your travel insurance plan.
  • Preexisting condition coverage: A preexisting condition can act up at any time, but many travel insurance policies will not cover them. Ask about preexisting conditions, since premium policies may include this type of coverage if you add it to your plan within a few weeks of your initial trip deposit.
  • Canceled flight coverage: If your flight is canceled and it causes you to miss a connection, travel insurance can pay for a hotel stay and a new flight as soon as it's available.
  • Easy logistics: When you miss a flight, it can throw your entire itinerary out of whack, but your travel insurance company should be able to do the work to put you back on track.
  • Interruption coverage: If something happens at home and you need to cut your trip short, travel insurance can help cover the cost of the return fare and reimburse the unused portion of your trip.
  • Clothing allowance: If your luggage is lost, be sure to ask your insurer about a clothing allowance to help you get through your vacation and replace your missing items.
  • Property replacement: It’s not uncommon for people to travel with valuable items like jewelry or personal care products. Be sure to discuss them with your insurance company before traveling to ensure they're covered for replacement.
  • Luggage delays: If your luggage is permanently lost, your travel insurance would probably replace it, but if it's only delayed, you might need to deal with some interim needs. Insurance could pay for an outfit or two and for toiletries to hold you over until your luggage can be delivered.
  • Ask about policy extensions: It’s always a good idea to know ahead of time whether you can extend your travel insurance coverage if you decide on the fly to extend your trip.
  • Long-term and short-term policies: Many travel insurance policies only cover a short time frame — sometimes only a week or two. If you plan to travel more extensively, be sure to ask about long-term options.
  • Limited coverage on extensions: Some travel insurance may allow for limited extensions with little to no extra cost. They may not include all premium services, however, so it's important to find out what is and is not covered on an extension.

What is not covered by travel insurance?

Essentially, anything not listed as covered in your policy will not be eligible for reimbursement through travel insurance. However, some items not covered by travel insurance may catch consumers by surprise.

Make sure to read your policy carefully to see if preexisting medical conditions, including pregnancy, are covered.

For example, James Clark of Squaremouth, which helps consumers compare travel quotes, says that preexisting medical conditions typically are not covered unless the traveler chooses a policy that offers coverage for preexisting conditions shortly after booking their trip.

"Preexisting condition policies must be purchased within 14 to 30 days of making your initial trip deposit and don’t typically cost any additional premium," said Clark.

Clark notes that many travelers also have the misconception that travel insurance will cover regular health-related issues that may impact their trip, including hospital costs that result from pregnancy and delivery. However, most policies don't cover pregnancy-related expenses, such as prescription medication, delivery charges and postpartum visits.

Other situations typically not covered through travel insurance include:

  • Participation in high-risk activities and sports (unless explicitly included in coverage within the policy details)
  • Cancellations due to known storms
  • Government-issued travel restrictions
  • Acts of war
  • Losses caused by unlawful acts

How to choose a travel insurance plan

Before you select a travel insurance policy, you need to think over the type of trip you are planning and the risks you're taking on as a result. For example, a road trip adventure that only lasts a few days will typically require a different type of coverage than a luxury cruise or an international trip that lasts several weeks.

Adequate medical coverage is the first factor to consider when selecting a travel insurance policy.

Consider these tips to ensure you wind up with the best travel insurance plan for your needs.

  • Line up adequate medical coverage first and foremost. Because medical expenses and medical evacuation are often the most important coverages in a travel insurance plan, you'll want to make sure the limits you get are sufficient for your needs. If you have a preexisting medical condition, make sure the plan you're considering lets you get coverage for your condition right off the bat (even if an added cost is required).
  • Weigh potential risks for your specific plans. Also look at your specific trip and make sure you have coverage that makes sense. For example, a vacation with several different flights and connections should have adequate limits for trip delays and lost or delayed baggage. Meanwhile, you may want to have specialized coverage for a cruise, including coverage for travel inconveniences and missed excursions.
  • Consider coverage limits. Keep coverage levels in mind as you compare plans and policies, particularly if you're sensitive to price. As an example, some basic travel insurance plans only offer a few hundred dollars (or even less) in coverage for baggage delays and $500 or less in protection for your luggage and personal belongings.
  • Check whether you get 24/7 travel assistance. Durazo says another major benefit of travel insurance is the assistance services many providers offer, which can apply wherever you are in the world. He adds that this type of coverage can arrange medical treatment in an emergency, monitor customers’ care, provide interpreters, help replace lost passports and more.
  • Consider optional CFAR coverage. Also ask yourself about the likelihood of you being unable to travel, and if you want the chance to cancel and get some of your money back. If you feel there's a chance you won't be able to go, consider buying optional cancel-for-any-reason (CFAR) coverage that reimburses you for 50% to 80% of your prepaid travel expenses when you decide not to travel for any reason at all.

How to apply for travel insurance

Applying for travel insurance is relatively easy, and you don't have to submit nearly as much information as you do when you apply for other types of insurance coverage. The steps below can help you line up coverage for your next vacation or even multiple trips you plan to take over several months.

Travel insurance alternatives

If you’re hesitant to purchase travel insurance, consider some of these alternatives:

  • Credit card travel insurance: Some travel credit cards offer included travel insurance benefits that apply when you use the card to pay for your trip. Coverage you may be able to get with a credit card includes trip cancellation and interruption insurance, primary rental car coverage, trip delay benefits, lost luggage reimbursement, emergency evacuation insurance and more.
  • Membership programs: Some membership plans can pay for emergency medical evacuation anywhere in the world, and you can secure coverage on an annual basis if you prefer. These may offer all-expenses-paid medical transport to the medical facility of your choice, language translation services, coverage for the transfer of mortal remains and more.
  • Travel protection: It's also possible to purchase travel protection directly from some travel providers at the point of sale. If you purchase a flight through Delta, for example, you can add on a policy that provides some coverage for trip cancellations and lost baggage. Just remember that travel coverage offered through airlines and cruise lines may be limited, and that coverage for medical expenses may be limited or nonexistent.

Frequently asked questions

The cost of travel insurance varies based on factors like the length of the trip, the age of travelers, included coverages and limits, and the destinations visited. However, the reported average cost typically works out to around 4% to 12% of your total trip cost, or $200 to $600 for a vacation that costs $5,000.

Many travelers tend to buy travel insurance coverage at the last minute, but this isn't a good idea, since you want to have the longest period of coverage possible. Ultimately, it's best to purchase travel insurance as soon as you make the initial trip deposit for each trip you plan to take.

If you're traveling outside the U.S., your own health plan generally won't apply. With that in mind, you'll want to have travel insurance coverage with adequate limits for emergency medical and dental care and emergency medical evacuation.

While the cost of travel insurance might feel like a waste, this coverage could help you recoup your prepaid trip costs if you become sick or injured away from home. That said, there may be instances where you don't need a plan, such as when you're planning a short road trip where you'll maintain possession of your luggage and belongings and your own health insurance still applies.

Disappointing Claims Support Service

My rate - one star or no star (but I cannot proceed with the review without the star). I have filed the claim in July 2022. In September 2022, I received an email informing me of the availability of online check for my claim. Unfortunately, the banking system where I am residing does not accept such online check. Thereafter, I requested for a physical check to be sent to my residence address. Up until now (March 30, 2023), no clear timeline as to when the check could be mailed to me. Worse, only the automatic reply system gets to respond to my frequent follow ups. I hope someone from Tripmate reads all these comments and addresses the issues right away. I am really disappointed on how they handle claims.

Suitcase repair paid in full

Filed a simple claim for suitcases damaged by airlines. I had them repaired and sent in all of the information specified by the helpful phone representative. Notification of payment in full was received a while later. It was rather slow, but I'm glad they paid for the repairs.

Hello L. Barney. Thank you for sharing your experience!

I found resolution of my claim handled…

I found resolution of my claim handled with prompt attention and appropriate payment I considered fair and reasonable. Any reluctance is based on the cost of the policy, although the cost was in line with travel insurance costs in general. Unusual for us to take a formal high end trip .

I found this policy excellent

I found this policy excellent, I was reimburse 100% of my trip. I never spoke to any claims person, I file all the documents on line and periodically check the status, couple of days before the 30th due day I received a check by email. Went to the bank and deposited the check for me and my wife.

Thanks so much for sharing your experience and for choosing Trip Mate, Joaquin!

Tripmate, the thank you for your money now go away company.

I bought Tripmate travel insurance in June, 2022. I had a bicycle accident in Vietnam and separated my shoulder on June 10, 2022. I had to have a surgery. I paid $7000 out of pocket for the surgery and hospital bills. I contacted Tripmate on June 11 and gave them all information and filed all the proper claim work. Eight months later trip mate is still playing games with me, asking me to re-submit claims, asking for repeat copies of unnecessary paperwork, etc. they advertise 24 hour online assistance that doesn’t exist. When you do get ahold of their reps they don’t acknowledge your issue and give you scripted answers that are not helpful. I know now there are plenty of good trip insurance companies out there. Don’t bother with this one.

My daughter missed her 8th grade class trip due to illness/fever the night before she was supposed to leave. After submitting all documentation our claim was approved and we received payment within 3 weeks.

Will definitely use Trip Mate again!

I had never used Trip Mate before and was really suspicious of using them. It turns out that my fears were unfounded. I had to file a claim due to an injury before my trip. There were a lot of questions and then I had to coordinate with my doctor to get them to fill out the claim form and return it. But after that, the refund came pretty quickly. The way the check could be printed and used immediately was amazing. I would definitely use Trip Mate again!

Over the past four years I’ve had…

Over the past four years I’ve had reason to file three separate claims with Trip Mate, the most recent initiated in Feb 2023. The first time, I needed a phone call to help clarify my confusion. After that, all claims were on line and the outcomes were what I felt they should be. I am very comfortable using Trip Mate for my travel insurance.

World Nomads partners with Trip Mate. Waste of Money.

We purchased travel insurance through World Nomads, who apparently partners with Trip Mate if there is a claim. We had our flight cancelled along with 5,000 others prior to holidays and ended up driving 10 hours round-trip to catch an alternative flight. We expected the insurance would, at very least, reimburse us for gas/expenses accrued in that process due to trip cancellation. We made sure to keep track of expenses, keep receipts and submitted the claim. Over a month later we received notice that nothing was covered at all. The reasoning? Our very exact scenario was not outlined in the plan, even though "flight cancellation" or "trip interruption" is supposedly covered. Waste of money! Unless you meet a very rigid exact scenario, you will not get anything reimbursed. There are better options out there. Will not use World Nomads or any other insurance that partners with Trip Mate.

We also offer a free look period with all of our plans to allow travelers to cancel their plan within a designated period as long as they haven't already left on their trip or filed a claim. If there is something specific that you want to be sure is covered, feel free to ask about it before you purchase the plan. Please reach out to us at the number or email provided above if you have any additional questions or concerns.

Never received claim reimbursement

It has been almost a year and 1) I haven’t received reimbursement for a valid trip cancellation (COVID!) for a school trip for my daughter. 2) They claim an echeck was sent- there is no record of any check sent to me. 3) Although they claim a check was produced, the payment tab on this claim is empty so how/when was a payment produced? I am at the point where I am calling the school district to notify them to stop doing business with them as well as the tour provider and I’m going to submit claims to the BBB and Missouri insurance board. They are a scam preying upon children and their parents.

Terrible travel insurance

Terrible travel insurance. We had to come out of pocket to pay to get to our destination for our honeymoon after united airlines didn't have staff to operate plane and couldn't get us there in time for our paid vacation. It's almost a year and still no reimbursement for us. Never use this company. After this review I was contacted by the company and we received our refund in 14 days. We were told the paperwork I submitted fell through the cracks and they apologize and would I edit my review. This is my edited version. After 8 months we finally received our money back.

To be fair, we had no problem with Tripmate. They performed as expected I realize that Covid raised many challenges. However, we were very disappointed with Viking and simply will not ever book through them. They have lost 2 customers.

My experience went without a hitch and…

My experience went without a hitch and I received my payment so I'm a happy camper. It did take 45 days to get my refund which I thought was a little excessive. It'd be nice if they add "Claim being processed" in the claim status window instead of just that it has been received. That will assure clients that it's not just sitting in an in-box.

Thanks for the feedback Scott! We will share it with our Customer Service Team.

Avoid this trip insurance

Avoid this trip insurance! Claim filing was fine. Didn’t hear from TripMate for 3 months. After checking online and then contacting them several times via phone and email for a status of my claim, I received a partial payment of expenses. Called and emailed several more times to try to obtain status of the remaining portion of my claim, which had been approved at the time as the other payments. I filed my claim in January 2023 and still do not have full reimbursement of my trip. They do not respond to emails or call back when they say they will. Note that if one person pays all expenses and submits for reimbursement, TripMate will divide the reimbursement by the number in traveling party and every traveling member is supposed to get a check.

Luggage cost not covered

It was alot of work to submit the claim, honestly. It took six weeks after submission to receive a check which was ok, i guess. The cost of checking our luggage wasn't covered which makes no sense. You need luggage to travel and this is "travel" insurance. I'm thankful for at least getting our airline ticket purchase refunded so I'll take it. I had to call twice and both times the reps were awesome. Great service.

School trip was canceled by the school not by me. I had purchased insurance in case something happened. I filed a claim immediately. It has been months and still I no idea what is going on. I have contacted them multiple times with the same information that they say is missing! I am very disappointed in this company. I will definitely never use them again.

Filed a claim in November 2022

Filed a claim in November 2022 - called 3 times to find out our status in which we could get no answer as to what is going on with our claim and now 4th call they claim they never received our documents - yet another way to continue to keep our $$$ for as long as possible. NEVER use this company for travel insurance!!

Satisfying and Timely resolution

As others have said, the on-line forms can be a little daunting, but with care an patience, we figured them out. WE were not paid every dollar we requested, but the company's justification for a recalculation was entirely plausible (a matter of how to count missed days of our trip). All in all, the experience was positive and promptly resolved and paid.

This Is Frustrating

UPDATE: It is rather edifying that the day after I post my negative review I get an email from TripMate that they have concluded their review and will be sending payments to cover our loss per the insurance policy. Why does it take going "public" to get them to move? Yes, we got a correct settlement but the time for TripMate to do their job remains excessive and unacceptable (I'll give them one more star for finally paying off)! Waiting for my e-check now... This is frustrating. This outfit "claims" to process claims in 30 days, that is a lie! They wait 30 days and them ask for more details which is often difficult to get. When you submit the additional information and call 2 weeks later to find out what is up they tell you it will take ANOTHER 30 DAYS to "evaluate" the additional submittal. I am in my third month and no payout!

Rowena H. EXCEEDED our customer expectations!

Rowena H. EXCEEDED our customer expectations! For 22 years, we have been purchasing your trip insurance for all of our Lindblad trips and we have never filed a claim. In 2023, due to a medical condition, we had to file our first claim. During the initial review of our claim, we had questions, but we were unable to talk to a person. Then we were connected to Rowena and she listened carefully to our questions. She checked on the claim, resolved the concern and called us back in a timely manner. I am very concerned about customer service because I have written articles for the Harvard Business Review. I will be contacting our Senior Expedition Specialist at Lindblad to let them know that we received EXCELLENT customer service from Rowena at TripMate.

Date of experience : March 18, 2023

That's great to hear Paul! Thanks so much for sharing your experience and choosing Trip Mate! We are happy to hear that Rowena provided excellent customer service.

If I could give negative five stars it…

If I could give negative five stars it wouldn’t be enough! My brother purchased a travel plan through world nomads for a paragliding trip to France. Sadly he passed away in a paragliding accident. I called the number on the policy he purchased through world nomads and I directed me to trip mate. They gave me an incident number and instructed me to email a copy of a death certificate, any medical documents, and an itemized invoice from the funeral home in France. After they received those documents radio silence for a week. The day I arrived in France to bring my brothers remains home I received a email requesting a copy of his passport and his flight itinerary to which I responded I’ll be home in four days, I’ll need to contact the airline to get the itinerary. They proceeded to call my wife at 2 A.M everyday for the next four day and each time she told them the same thing I did. Obviously when I returned home I emailed the requested documents and was ghosted for 2 weeks. Decided I’d reach out today by phone because the stopped responding to emails only to be told they have NO RECORD OF ANY CLAIM BEING FILED! Funny after weeks of correspondence. Not like I had more important things to deal with…

Claim submission behind the times!

The filing of a claim on line and then having to print out to sign the form, is so inconvient as a printer is required. Electronic signature is possible as well as submission of claims electronically. Submission of the claims, all paper copies, have to be scanned in the system at Tripmate. My claim was paid at least 3 weeks from submission to payment. Communication as per the status of the claim was Incomplete. Texts via phone occurred one time only. Email communication was nonexistent.

My claim was resolved in a very timely manner! The support I received from the Customer Care was excellent, very informative and helpful! The links provided to upload your claim information worked like a dream. Truly a 10🌟 experience, especially from some who has been in the airline industry and corporate events, TripMate hit a Home Run!

Thanks for the HOME RUN review, Lora. We are pleased to hear that we met your expectations with the claim's process.

Our dream vacation can still happen.…

We had planned our dream vacation for months and in over 25 years of marriage (we are in our 70's) only vacationed once (honeymoon) together. We were so looking forward to making memories and my husband, out of the blue had a heart attack and a quadruple bypass only 2 months before our departure date. We were refunded 25% of the cost of our trip by the travel company and Trip Mate covered the other 75%. They were very helpful and polite as I was quite frazzeled and had so many questions. We had all of our money back in a month and that was only because of the paperwork and long hospital stay at the hospital. We will use Trip Mate again when we are able to travel. It was well worth the cost.

I am 76 years old and have dealt with 100's if not 1000's of online representatives from a wide variety of companies. Today I got the most courteous & helpful assistance EVER! Shimere guided me through handling confusion over 2 reimbursement checks that I had received by email but had not responded appropriately. She gave me time to figure out the problem, called me back, stayed on the phone while I fumbled, and then arranged to mail the missing check to me. She told me she treats all people as she wants to be treated; and she treats senior citizens as she wants people to treat her grandparents. Shemire won me over to Trip Mate. I just might sign up for another Viking cruise if I get to work with her again! 😜

Thanks for sharing your feedback with us, Ann. We're sorry to hear about any confusion with the claim payments, but happy Shimere was able to assist and exceed your customer satisfaction. We hope you enjoy any future travels!

Trip mate is a scam don’t purchase…

Before you get insurance with trip mate look them up on Google , BBB, reviews and save your self money. Don’t take my word for it read everyone’s review to see how shady they really are . The reviews tell you everything. Make it your personal purpose to check reviews for anything before purchasing. Trip mate is a scam don’t purchase insurance for your trip they give you a hard time to get your money back they’re a scam. I had to cancel a trip because I had to be hospitalized and had to start dialysis before my schedule appointment. And trip mate told me i didn’t give them enough information. My dr signed the paper work what more proof do they need ??? What’s the point of getting insurance if they don’t protect you . They look out for their best interests not yours . Don’t let this happen to you pls don’t waist your money or time on trip mate . Not worth it at all the head ache and games they play .

Tripmate was great with my claim!

Tripmate provided excellent assistance when I had to cancel my cruise due to medical reasons. They answered my questions regarding filing a claim and put me at ease. I was approved for a full refund just 11 days after I submitted my claim and paperwork. The online process was so easy.

Thank you for your feedback, Dann! It's wonderful to hear we were able to exceed your expectations with the claim's process.

Best Insurance Company Ever

Once they received all the required documents, the claim was approved and the checks were issued in a very timely manner. We disagreed with a deduction on our claim and supplied them with the information of why. Within a week they agreed with us and will be sending us a check for that amount. This is the best insurance company I have ever worked with.

Ways to frustrated the insured

I’m in the middle of my claim. I had to cancel my husband’s portion of a trip due to illness. The agent asked the same questions over and over again. He also asked when my husband will travel again. I told him my husband is on hospice and won’t be traveling again yet he continued to ask about my husband’s travel plans. Reading these reviews makes me think I should give up now.

I filed a claim with Tripmate

I filed a claim with Tripmate, because my luggage was broken into and my Louis Vuitton sunglasses were stolen. Trip mate denied the claim because they said sunglasses were not covered! I mean really?? could you believe sunglasses contact lenses prescription glasses are excluded from coverage! This coverage stinks you pay a lot of money, and it stinks!! I do not recommend purchasing this coverage look elsewhere !!

While the requirements were a bit overwhelming since my husband was in-home hospice by the time I applied for the refund, I can understand requiring authentic hospital records and details for the claim. Nonetheless, once I gathered everything, it took a month for the adjudication and we received full reimbursement. When I had questions, they were promptly and professionally answered. I will be insuring with Trip Mate on future travels having had a great experience with their assistance, ease of application and prompt response to inquiries.

Do not use if not flying to destination

I was required to buy travel insurance for a photography course. I traveled to the Canadian Arctic in my adventure van, but the fires shut down the highways and campgrounds, all the towns were evacuated so I was unable to get to the course. Tripmate has delayed any action on the claim by repeatedly asking for my air travel itinerary, even though I have told them since filing the claim I did not travel by air. They delay, delay, delay by repeatedly asking for the same information, over and over. Would not recommend if you are traveling from the US via van or car.

Not worth it!

Guess I'll add to their great reviews. They Closed my claim, claiming that I received a refund for trip interruption from funjet. Funjet does not even offer a refund for trip interruption! I received a comp from funjet for booking so many rooms. So now I have to prove I didnt receive anything for trip interruption. Then make an appeal though email, because of course you cant actually talk to anybody in that department. Seriously? How do you prove you didnt receive something? And before somebody from the company wastes their time with a generic reply, why dont you actually look into my claim!

BRIDGET ROCKS

While I had some difficulty getting my claims processed with Trip Mate, I was able to reach Bridget in Customer Service about an unpaid claim that had been overlooked. She could not have been nicer or more helpful. She contacted my claim rep and got everything handled while I was on the phone. She was incredibly nice and totally professional. I give HER my highest marks. Thank you, Bridget.

They fulfilled their promise

We couldn't make our trip for a covered reason. The instructions to file a claim were clear and easy. There was a slight delay in receiving the check due to an incorrect email address but that was promptly resolved and payment was made in full. TripMate fulfilled their promise and I would use it again.

We value and appreciate your feedback, Bill. Sorry about the slight delay, but we are happy to know you had a positive claim experience with us.

This company doesn't offer any insurance if you have to cancel a trip! Do not buy from this company! I had to cancel my daughter's trip which is 3 months away because of mental health issue. We had a therapist send in a form saying this trip would be detrimental to her health if she went on this trip. The insurance company denied our claim because she hasn't been hospitalized for this condition. A total joke! Don't buy insurance from Trip Mate!

I had a family member die and had to cancel a trip. Trip Mate reimbursed for flights and resort. So glad I got insurance because you just never know. The day we were supposed to leave the airport was snowed in for 2 days so we would have had to use the insurance either way. Filling out paperwork was relatively easy. Check link arrived in a couple weeks. I'm very happy with the service I received and will use them again.

WASTE OF MONEY

Tripmate Travel Insurance is a COMPLETE WASTE OF MONEY! We purchased insurance for our trip to Ireland, London, and Paris. There was a security issue (not of our doing) at the airport in Paris that caused us to miss our flight back to the US. We immediately called the airline, the travel company and Tripmate. Everyone passed the buck! We incurred expel from over $3500 to get home from Paris. And we have been denied! It was legitimately not our fault, but they are not in the business of helping protect people from unexpected events- they are in the business of making money! They sell you the insurance for piece of mind- ha! DONT EVER BUY THE INSURANCE!

My wife had an accident when traveling…

My wife had an accident when traveling in Nepal. I submitted everything to the Trip Mate (Aka World Nomads) via email in October in 2023, In Early February 2024 I received an insignificant payment and ignored on other reimbursements. It is impossible to get a straight answer from their customer service representatives, their usual response is that "they are still reviewing the claim". I have sent in receipts, invoices, credit card statements with detailed descriptions of transactions and have heard nothing back. Do not use this company for travel insurance, as you'll end up in a heap of credit card debt, interest and a false sense of hope that you'll receive any payment back from Trip Mate (World Nomads). ..... I received $2200 the day after I posted a negative on Google (total requested was around $28,000). Since they won't respond to my emails or calls, here I go again.. I have a Emergency Helicopter evacuation that cost $3536. My Health Insurance will not cover it and Trip Mate are unwilling will to pay even after receiving a Explanation of Benefits from Blue Cross Blue Shield which they requested in order to pay. DO NOT use this company. And make sure you look up the multiple names they do business as such as World Nomads. Claim #7315797
