Routes North - Nordic travel guide

9 of the best Viking tours in Scandinavia

The Vikings came from Norway, Denmark and Sweden more than thousand years ago and left a rich cultural heritage across Scandinavia.

You can visit a Viking longhouse on a tour in Scandivania

The era of the Vikings lasted from around 800–1050, during which time these sea-faring people travelled widely throughout northern Europe, trading, fighting, plundering and colonising as far afield as France, Ireland, Iceland and even Greenland .

But it is in their home nations that the historical legacy is so strong, with Norway, Sweden and Denmark having loads of Viking remains that you can still see today.

What kinds of things can you see?

Throughout Scandinavia, you can visit museums displaying beautifully preserved Viking long boats, explore ancient Viking settlements and burial grounds, and marvel at Viking standing stones, runes and archeological finds.

The largest Viking longhouse ever discovered is at Borg on Vestvågøy in Norway’s Lofoten islands; the world’s best-known rune stones are at Jelling in Denmark; and the world’s largest haul of Viking silver has been recently excavated at Täby in Sweden.

And honestly, these treasures are just the tip of the iceberg!

Visiting Viking sites for yourself

Some of Scandinavia’s Viking sites are easy to access, while others are more remote and harder to get to.

You can visit museum sites that are highly organised with plenty of information and guides dressed in Viking gear – and maybe even Viking reenactments!

These places really let you learn all the history and really get to grips with the Viking culture and lifestyle.

Other sites are quiet, remote places where you can wander around on your own and drink in the atmosphere of a wild Viking camp.

Either way, taking a tour of Viking sites with an expert guide can really enhance your knowledge and experience of Viking culture.

For more on the Viking way of life and culture, see our guides on the Viking diet and Viking games .

Guided tours you can join

So, if you fancy seeing some of Scandinavian’s famous sites on a guided tour, there are plenty of different options available.

You can go on museum tours, archeological site visits , reenactment experiences, Viking feasts, boat tours, short day trips and multi-day tours with a guide, coach and accommodation included.

And the tours cover a wide geographical range from Norway, Sweden, Denmark, and even Iceland.

So, whether you’re up for a fun interactive Viking feast experience or want to learn all about the culture, history lifestyle of the Vikings from an expert guide, there’s a tour for you.

Short tours and day trips

Here are some of some of our favourite Viking tours in Scandinavia. These are all relatively short tours that last anywhere from a couple of hours to a full day (we’ve listed multi-day tours below ).

Visit Viking sites from Stockholm

We love this tour from Stockholm that packs in a whole raft of impressive Viking sites in just one day.

Visits a Viking rune near Stockholm

Amongst other sites, you’ll visit a burial mound of Viking kings at Gamma Uppsala, the ruins of a church dedicated to Viking warrior Saint Olaf in Sigtuna, one of Sweden’s oldest towns, and explore Viking rune stones at Arkils Tingstad.

It’s led by an experienced guide with expert Viking knowledge and we think it’s a great introduction to Viking sites and culture.

Snowshoe in the fjords with a Viking dinner

Combine fantastic views of Norway’s fjords with a snowshoe hike, followed by a fun Viking dinner in front of the fire in a cosy Viking-style pub.

Enjoy a feast in a Viking brewhouse in Norway

We think this a unique opportunity to combine snowshoeing in the fjords with sampling a Viking-style feast of smoked reindeer and fish soup, accompanied by different Ægir beers.

Explore the Viking ship Museum in Roskilde

Combine history and culture on this day-trip from Copenhagen , which takes in the Roskilde Viking Ship Museum. Here you can admire renovated 11th-century Viking ships and learn all about Viking boat-building and sea-faring traditions.

See renovated Viking longships in a museum in Roskilde, Denamrk

Not only that, but the tour includes a visit to Roskilde Cathedral, burial site of 39 Danish kings and queens, plus Kronborg castle, the original Elsinore in Shakespeare’s Hamlet .

Visit the Viking islands from Alesund

This guided tour from Alesund in Norway’s fjordland takes in three islands which were settled by Vikings and explains all about the Viking heritage and history here.

Visit three islands on a Viking tour from Alesund, Norway.

You’ll visit three islands, including Giske, birthplace of the Viking Rollon (a descendent of the British royal family) and Godoy, home of a legendary Viking lighthouse.

Take a boat trip to the Birka Viking Village

Visit the Unesco-listed Birka Viking village on an island in Sweden’s Lake Mälaren. This huge archaeological site was once a thriving Viking settlement that dated from the 8th century and remains are still being excavated here today.

Visit Birka Viking village near Stockholm

The former settlement has been recreated so that visitors can experience Viking life – and there are regular talks, themed guided tours, and reconstructions of Viking feasts and ceremonies.

The boat trip from Stockholm and entrance to the Viking village is included in the Stockholm Pass (May to October only).

Multi-day tours and vacations

If a short tour is not enough, why not base your holiday around visiting Viking sites, and even cover more than one Scandinavian country on your tour? Here are some of our favourite multi-day Viking-themed tours.

Visit Viking sites in four countries

This 15-day trip takes in significant Viking sites in Norway, Sweden, Denmark and even Germany, including Denmark’s Jelling stones, Norway’s stave churches and rock art at Tanum in Sweden.

Visit a beautiful Norwegian stave church on a Viking tour of Scandinavia

What we really like about this tour is that it’s led by a senior lecturer in medieval archeology from the University of York and it includes private tours of some of the sights including the Hedared Stave Church and the Tanum rock art.

Cruise round the Viking sites

Combine Viking exploration with a cruise on this 12-day trip from Edinburgh, UK round some of Scandinavia’s most fascinating Viking sites, including the beautiful Unesco World Heritage city of Visby, whose well-preserved buildings date from Viking times.

Visit Visby in Denmark on a cruise round Viking sites in Scandinavia.

We like that this cruise also stops in at the Scotland’s remote Orkney islands, where Vikings from Norway settled in the 8th century.

Explore Norway’s Viking history

And if you just want to stay in Norway, we love this week-long jaunt around some of the country’s top Viking sites.

Urmes stave church is a highlight on a tour of Viking sites in Norway.

It includes a guided walking tour of the former Viking city of Bjørgvin, a trip to Gulating, home of a Viking court of law and parliament, and a walking tour on the island of Svanøy, birthplace of Viking, Erik Blodøks.

But what we like best is the trip to the UNESCO-listed Urnes Stave Church, beautifully crafted in wood by the Vikings in the 12th-century.

Have a Viking adventure in Iceland

Iceland too was settled by the Vikings and there are plenty of Viking sites that you see on this three-day guided tour that also includes a trip into an ice cave and a hike along a glacial canyon.

Þingvellir church was built by the Vikings who set up the world's oldest parliament.

Our favourite part of the tour is the cultural site Þingvellir, where the Eurasian and American tectonic plates meet and where the Vikings set up the Althing, the world’s first parliament.

You can walk along the walk through the gorge where the contintents collide and look inside Þingvellir Viking church.

10 Viking Sites and Events in Finland

Finnish flag and Viking painting

The Vikings of pre-Christian Scandinavia were violent, ruthless marauders who terrorised much of Europe for several centuries, and that is precisely why we love them so much. For all of our fascination with the Vikings, we don’t often hear or talk about their impact in Finland, simply because the Vikings never had much of an influence in the country as they did in others. Yet there is plenty of evidence of Vikings landing in Finland, and the Finns are just as fascinated by them as anyone else. These are some of the top Viking archaeological sites, events, and shops to be found in Finland for all history nerds to enjoy.

Åland viking market.

By far the biggest and best Viking event in Finland, the annual Viking market transforms the village of Kvarnbo in the south west Åland Islands into an authentic Viking village for a weekend, attracting over 10,000 visitors each year. There you can wear authentic Viking costumes, stay up late feasting and drinking ale, role play as a Viking, see crafters at work, and watch battle re-enactments. The 2018 market will be held from July 26 to July 28 and will again attract Viking societies from around the world.

Rosala Viking Centre

If you can’t make it to the Viking Market, the Viking Centre at Rosala is the next best you can get to an authentic Viking experience. The museum contains a replica Viking village, weapons exhibit, burial boat, Viking ship, and even a sacrificial stone. For an extra fee, you can have a guided tour of the centre and even learn how to throw a Viking axe. The attached restaurant and bed and breakfast allows for full immersion in the world of the Vikings.

Replica Viking hall at Rosala

National Museum of Finland

Until recently, Finns were somewhat in denial about their history of Viking conquest. After more discoveries by the National Board of Antiquities, it is now possible to see discoveries from Viking archaeological sites in Finland’s museums , especially at the National Museum in Helsinki. Most notable are the beautiful pieces of jewellery from the Räisäla hoard.

Viking jewellery at the National Museum

Janakkala gravesite

One of the most extraordinary Viking-era arachnological finds in Finland was uncovered completely by accident by amateur explorers with metal detectors. The gravesite in the Häme region dates back to the 12th century and contains a well-preserved skeleton of what is presumably a Viking warrior wielding two swords, possibly placed there to aid the warrior in the afterlife. One of the swords is the longest ancient sword discovered in Finland from any era.

Turku Medieval Market

Depending on who you speak to, the medieval period is a little too late to cross over with the Viking period. Yet at the Medieval Market held in Turku every June, you can experience many of the same things you would at a Viking recreationist event. This includes authentic costume, entertainment, handicrafts, smiths, and an all-around fun atmosphere. Some trade stands also sell Viking jewellery or merchandise.

Musicians at the Medieval Market

Ahvenkoski Iron Age village

Possibly the most significant Viking archaeological find in all of Finland to date. In 2010, evidence of a harbour and small Iron Age village were uncovered in the village of Ahvenkoski at the mouth of the Kymijoki river, dating from around 1000 to 1200 CE. The site includes a smithy, furnace, and hundreds of smaller Viking artefacts. Two years later, a cremation grave was found nearby containing human bones and several weapons.

Viking Restaurant Harold

As a theme restaurant, the Harald chain found throughout Finland is somewhat expensive and more than a little cheesy. But if you can afford it and want to gorge on meat and mead like a real Viking, it is a great spot to take friends for a memorable dinner or party. You can even eat your meat straight off a sword!

Harold restaurant in Oulu

True Viking Shop

If you’re looking for high quality Viking jewellery, clothing, or costume items, you can’t get much better than the True Viking Shop based in Helsinki. The knowledgeable staff sell a huge range of Viking related items for good prices, including replica weapons, drinking horns, and Mjölnir (Thor’s hammer) necklaces. As well as the shop in Helsinki, you can also find them at many events throughout Finland or order from the online shop.

Mjölnir necklace

Borge Swyn Viking ship

This amazing replica Viking ship was constructed in 2014 to accurately resemble a real Viking ship found in Finland to see just how the Vikings built their own ships. The Borge Swyn now sails back into Kvarnbo harbour every year for the Viking Market for visitors to see up close.

Helsinki - Tallinn - Helsinki

Wow, I thought that my trip over on a Monday morning in the middle of winter would be quiet....not so! Turns out I was in Finland for the school break. As a result the boat was very, very busy, and unless you were first in queue you'd struggle to find a seat on the ship. Despite all this, I had a blast! There's a couple of bars, dance-floor, smoking room, karaoke, shopping, restaurants. I paid extra for the buffet on the evening cruise back and I thought it was money well-spent! The food was good and wine was free-flowing. The cosmetics and alcohol shopping is very good and it's certainly cheaper to buy these goods on the ferry as opposed to buying in Finland. Viking Line was ideal for me as my hotel was nearby the terminal in Helsinki. In Tallinn, the ship docked very close to old town, around a 10 minute walk away. Sadly Tallinn did not overly impress me, different strokes for different folks I guess. It was still a fun little outing. I would say that I only really had a few hours on land in Tallinn due to the limited scheduling of Viking Line, so I definitely felt a little rushed. However since I was looking forward to returning to Helsinki it didn't matter. All in all it was a great day out.

We took a 2 day cruise from Stockholm to Helsinki. The cruise (Mariella) is not new, let's be honest, but it was a nice tip nonetheless. The cabin was excellent for 2 people (although 4 beds were available). I guess it would be a little crowded for 4 people. We booked the Standard cabin. The prices were very affordable (the accommodation and transportation that is). We decided to take the Viking buffet and breakfast both days. Dinner was a little pricey but it was nice because it had a lot of variety. The service in the restaurant was great. Breakfast was ok as well. Please be aware that people also bring their own food, there is a cafeteria to grab a small bite to eat (salads, open faced sandwiches and sea food, desserts and coffee) as well as more expensive restaurants. Activities onboard were plenty, we had time to go to the magic show, live music, and disco. The prices on the shops (alcohol) were very affordable, we managed to buy a few drinks. Wi-Fi was impossible to get throughout the trip, but oh well we had other things to do. When we arrived to Helsinki we had plenty of time to walk round, visit the Cathedral, shops and a very beautiful market. I totally recommend it.

We made a last minute decision to take the ferry from Helsinki to Tallinn for the day - what a great idea! We loved the ferry ride, taking advantage of the buffet lunch (which we discovered included wine on tap) and listened to the band, who were pretty good. Tallinn is beautiful and we had plenty of time to explore the town. On the ferry trip back to Helsinki we had reserved a table in the A la carte restaurant - I had a superb fillet steak. If you are in Helsinki looking for something to do, take a day trip to Estonia.

We were leaving on Friday evening 17.30 from Katajanokka and were in Stockmann at 10 am local time. The cabin was on 4th level Seaside standard, comfortable, good scenes to the sea. It was nice to follow ice flows in the Helsinki Katajanokka harbour front, full moonlight bridge on the return trip, the 7th floor was dedicated to restaurants: Buffet restaurant, Ocean Grill, Food Garden, Tasting menu restaurant. We enjoyed breakfast at buffet, first dinner at the cafe and the second evening's dinner at the Ocean Grill. The supermarket is based on the 6th floor. The ship supermarkets sell tax free confectionary, cosmetics, perfumes, foodstuffs, clothing, a wide variety of alcohol drinks. There is also specific playing space for kids. For entertainment the band was playing as well you could sing karaoke in the nearby bar.

We took a day trip to Estonia and it was well worth the visit. The boat felt over crowded and seats were few and far between. Boat was very noisy on the way back with karaoke but Estonia is well worth a visit for a day

It is very easy to take a Viking Line boat from Helsinki-Katajanokka Terminal and go to Tallinn or Stockholm. The trip to Tallinn takes 3 hours and to Stockholm overnight arriving to Stockholm roun 9 o'clock. Daytrip to Tallinn leaves you about 4 hours in the city before returning to Helsinki. Very nice trip, I recommend.

The Viking past of the archipelago is brought to life in the Rosala Viking Centre in a museum displaying, among other things, finds from the archaeological investigations at Örsund (currently Kyrksundet).

The Viking Age (800-1050 A.D.) is illuminated in varied and interesting ways. The experience is like opening a window and getting a look at a living past! You get to walk around in a complete Viking village with reconstructed buildings from the Viking Age–including the chieftain hall, a smithy and a herb garden–imagining what peoples lives where like in Finland during the Iron Age.

In addition to the Viking village and our two Viking ships Alvilda and Hogland, there are three separate exhibitions, about which you can learn more on the  Exhibitions  page.

In general it was great, clean, plenty of space (I was in a 4 persons cabin, alone, so maybe that helped)

It was a great deal for the price. It is a very nice experience to spend the night here rather than in a hotel. There are a lot of things to do inside, places to go and eat, and the cabins are good-sized.

A night cruise to Tallinn and back was a great alternative to spending a night in the city of Helsinki. We boarded at 20.30 and enjoyed the buffet and evening scenery on the Baltic, had a very comfortable night's sleep and were back in Helsinki the following morning at 10.30.

good experience and alternative to conventional lodging. we enjoyed the cruise.

Excellent experience!!! Very fun for the whole family, great eating options, lots to do on the boat. The views of the sunset and sunrise are unmatched. Everything was very clean and well organized. All in all, a great alternative to getting a hotel for one night.

the staff was super helpful when we’ve had an issue with our cabin . good value for money and unforgettable experience

viking tour helsinki

It was an amazing experience, the cruise had a few restaurants but not everything was opened. My cabin was pretty small and it had no windows, but I guess that’s what you expected from the cheapest room. It had a small TV, the bathroom was surprisingly good for the size of the room.

How guest reviews work

Each review score is between 1 and 10. To get the overall score, we add up all the review scores and divide that total by the number of review scores we received. Guests can also give separate subscores in crucial areas, such as location, cleanliness, staff, comfort, facilities, value, and free WiFi. Guests submit their subscores and their overall scores independently – there’s no direct link between them.

You can review an accommodation that you booked through our platform if you stayed there, or if you got to the property but didn’t actually stay there. To edit a review you’ve already submitted, contact our Customer Service team.

We have people and automated systems that specialize in detecting fake reviews submitted to our platform. If we find any, we delete them and, if necessary, take action against whoever is responsible.

Anyone who spots something suspicious can always report it to our Customer Service team so that our fraud team can investigate.

Ideally, we'd publish every review we get, positive and negative. However, we won’t display any reviews that include or refer to (among other things):

  • Politically sensitive comments
  • Promotional content
  • Illegal activities
  • Personal or sensitive info (e.g. emails, phone numbers, credit card info)
  • Swear words, sexual references, hate speech, discriminatory remarks, threats, or references to violence
  • Spam and fake content
  • Animal cruelty
  • Impersonation (i.e. if the writer is claiming to be someone else)
  • Any violation of our review guidelines.

To make sure reviews are relevant, we may only accept reviews that are submitted within 3 months of checking out. We may stop showing reviews once they’re 36 months old, or if the accommodation has a change of ownership.

An accommodation can reply to a review.

When you see multiple reviews, the most recent ones will be at the top, subject to a few other factors (e.g. language, whether it’s just a rating or contains comments as well, etc.). You can sort and/or filter them by time of year, review score, and more.

Sometimes we show external review scores from other well-known travel websites, but make it clear when we do this.
