Our Family Guide: Twilight Tours at the Honolulu Zoo

HONOLULU (HONOLULU MAGAZINE) — Feel like a zoo VIP with exclusive access, active animals and cooler temperatures at this after-hours program.

Since attending Winter Break Zoo Camp at the Honolulu Zoo, Duke has become an avid animal expert, spouting off facts to his dad and me. We decided to take advantage of his new-found passion and booked tickets for the evening tour at the zoo offered on Saturdays.

We arrived early as we were not sure how hard it would be to find parking. As luck would have it, all the surfers were heading home, so we nabbed a great stall in the zoo parking lot along Kapahulu Avenue. Adding to the exclusive feel of the tour, we entered at Gate 3, which is the “back door” to the zoo, and were handed special lanyards to wear around our necks. It felt like a backstage pass.

Twilight Tours give people a chance to experience the zoo after it closes to the public. The two-hour guided tours run on Saturday evenings starting at 4;30 p.m. from October to March and 5:30 p.m. April to September.

Hawaiʻi on the Cheap

Oʻahu: Saturday Twilight tour at Honolulu Zoo

The Honolulu Zoo is the wildest place in Waikīkī. Situated in the shadow of Diamond Head crater at the corner of Kapahulu and Kalākaua Avenues, the zoo was stablished in 1877. In fact, it is the only zoo in the United States that originated in a King’s grant of royal lands to his people.

History of the Honolulu Zoo

In 1876, King David Kalākaua, Monarch of Hawai‘i, made lands of the Leahi Crown Holdings available to the people of Hawai‘i. One a year later, King Kalākaua dedicated Kapiolani Regional Park, named for his consort Queen Kapiolani. He also appointed a park association to oversee the 300-acre parcel of fishponds, lagoons, marshlands, and islands. With the help of royal subsidies, the park was developed to display the King’s private bird collection and to feature a horseracing track.

In 1914, the City of Honolulu assumed responsibility for the park. The first Park Director, Ben Hollinger began adding animals to the bird collection. Kapiolani Bird Park grew to include three large aviary complexes and established techniques for breeding and bird care.

In 1947, 42.5 acres within Kapiolani Regional Park were designated as the Honolulu Zoo. the original design arranged animals in taxonomic groupings of bird, reptile, and mammal exhibits.

In 1984, a Tropical Zoological Garden plan re-organized zoo exhibits into tropical ecological zones. Management and staff at the zoo is committed to making the Honolulu Zoo a place of refuge and wonder for residents and visitors alike.

About the Honolulu Zoo

The mission of the Honolulu Zoo is to inspire stewardship of our living world by providing conservation, education, and meaningful experiences to our community.

The 42-acre zoo exhibits are organized into tropical ecological zones: the African Savanna, Asian and American Tropical Forests, and Pacific Islands. The Zoo emphasizes Pacific Tropical ecosystems and Hawaiian values of malama (caring) and ho`okipa (hospitality).

The Honolulu Zoo is home to over 900 different animals. The collection includes mammals, reptiles, amphibians, and birds. You’ll see lions and tigers (but no bears, oh my), elephants, aardvarks, orangutans, monkeys, and more. There are tortoises and turtles and skinks, too. Plus a variety of frogs, snakes, and tropical birds. Many endangered species are represented, including Komodo dragon (world’s largest lizard at 10-feet), the African wild dog, Palm Cockatoo, and several more.

The Honolulu Zoo Society is resuming twilight tours on Saturday evenings beginning May 22.

During the tour, educators will guide guests on a two-hour trek through popular areas of the Zoo. Visitors will hear about the biology and behavior of these animals, and the role that the Zoo plays in the conservation of endangered species.

Kamaaina and military tickets are $20 for adults and $15 for children. Tickets can be purchased online at honoluluzoo.org. For inquiries on private tours, please email [email protected].

Facial coverings are required, and comfortable walking shoes are recommended. Strollers and water bottles are welcome. Tours will continue through light rain. In the event of a heavy downpour and cancellation, every effort will be made to reschedule or refund the tour.

Twilight Tour

I was in Honolulu when this unique tour was offered. It begins after the zoo closes for the day and lasts about 90 minutes. Our guide introduced us to quite a few residents, including sone mischievous spider monkeys, a vocal pair of beautiful lions, gibbons, enormous Galapagos tortoises, ring tailed lemurs, African wild dogs, elephants, unique Indian gharials, and more. Exotic birds were in evidence all over the zoo, roaming freely; they date back to when the area was known as the Queen's bird park. We learned about the zoo's conservation efforts and heard many of the animal's stories. Note: the lemur mentioned in a prior review was one of a pair of siblings. Its brother died recently and the zoo is now deciding what to do. Perhaps ask about a situation before passing judgement? A nice tour and very child friendly. Nighttime brings activities frim nocturnal critters, which is interesting to see. I'm involved with conservation at home, so found the tour quite informative. And the zoo location is beautiful, it's in Queen Kapiolani Park, right near the beach.

honolulu zoo twilight tour

We went there on a hot day and there was places in shade in most of park. Food was nice at the cafe and the grounds were well kept. The animals all looked healthy although the enclosures were small.

It was a reasonable price to get in at $19 per adult. As we walked around there were empty enclosures for the elephants, rhino and tiger. All of which were the main reason I went. But the saddest thing I saw was a Meerkat all alone next to a big sign saying they are highly social animals and live in large family groups. How can you just have one? Either get some more or send him to another zoo for company. It’s very cruel and unfair to have him on his own. Loved the giraffes though.

This is worth a half day, but that's about it. A lot of the exhibits were being worked on while we were there. They have some pretty impressive animal pens, and they seem clean and well taken care of. But not a big deal if you miss this either. Good for little ones.

We walked to the Zoo from the other end of town (Lewers) where we were staying, and it was a lovely walk ( about 45 mins) to get there all along the main strip. Entry was not too expensive, but the gift shop was not cheap. The exhibits were not all full when we were there, but we still enjoyed the things we saw. The sloths are just gorgeous! The Orang-utans were separated and looked a little sad (I think they'd had a falling out?) but so sweet. We think it is definitely worth a visit.

Generally I really enjoy Zoo’s but if you don’t visit this one you are not missing anything. Most of the animals were in hiding, there was no Komodo and really it is not much more than a good walk rather than a Zoo of any interest. I would have marked it even lower but I love Flamingos and they were out and about luckily for me.

Honolulu is known for its warm and humid weather, even after the sun sets. The combination of high temperatures and humidity can quickly lead to dehydration if you’re not careful. That’s why it’s crucial to stay hydrated throughout your twilight tour.

By doing so, you’ll set yourself up for an unforgettable evening filled with fascinating wildlife encounters and magical moments under Hawaii’s twilight sky.

Don’t miss out on this extraordinary opportunity—arrive early and get ready to embark on a remarkable adventure at the Honolulu Zoo Twilight Tour!

Enhance Your Honolulu Zoo Twilight Tour: Don’t Forget the Insect Repellent!

As you prepare for your unforgettable Honolulu Zoo Twilight Tour, there’s one important item you shouldn’t overlook: insect repellent. While the zoo is a beautiful and enchanting place, it’s also home to some pesky mosquitoes that can dampen your experience if you’re not prepared.

Mosquitoes are a common presence in tropical environments like Hawaii, and the twilight hours can be particularly enticing for these tiny creatures. But fear not! By bringing along some insect repellent, you can ensure that these buzzing nuisances won’t detract from your enjoyment of the tour.

Applying insect repellent before embarking on your twilight adventure will help keep those persistent mosquitoes at bay. It’s best to choose a repellent with ingredients such as DEET or picaridin, as they have been proven effective against mosquitoes. Be sure to follow the instructions on the product label for proper application.

With insect repellent in hand, you’ll have peace of mind knowing that you can fully immerse yourself in the wonders of the Honolulu Zoo without any unwanted distractions. You’ll be able to focus on observing captivating animals, listening to their calls, and learning from your knowledgeable guides.

Remember, prevention is key when it comes to mosquito bites. In addition to applying insect repellent, consider wearing light-colored clothing that covers exposed skin and avoiding heavily scented perfumes or lotions that may attract mosquitoes.

By taking this small precautionary step and bringing insect repellent with you on your Honolulu Zoo Twilight Tour, you’ll be able to enjoy every moment without worrying about those tiny winged intruders. So pack your bug spray and get ready for an enchanting evening surrounded by wildlife in one of Hawaii’s most cherished destinations!

Dress Appropriately for the Honolulu Zoo Twilight Tour

When embarking on the Honolulu Zoo Twilight Tour, it’s essential to dress appropriately to ensure a comfortable and enjoyable experience. As this unique adventure takes place in the evening, it’s wise to come prepared with a light jacket or sweater in case the temperature drops after sunset.

Even in tropical climates like Hawaii, evenings can sometimes bring cooler breezes or a slight drop in temperature. While the daytime heat may have you in shorts and a t-shirt, having an extra layer can make all the difference once the sun goes down. A light jacket or sweater will help keep you warm and cozy as you explore the zoo’s captivating exhibits under the enchanting twilight sky.

The beauty of dressing in layers is that you can easily adjust your clothing to match your comfort level throughout the tour. As you move from one exhibit to another, you may find areas that are slightly warmer or cooler than others. Unveiling the Hidden Creatures: Spotting Nocturnal Animals at the Honolulu Zoo Twilight Tour

When embarking on the Honolulu Zoo Twilight Tour, keep your eyes wide open and be prepared for a thrilling adventure. One of the most exciting aspects of this unique experience is the opportunity to encounter animals that are typically hidden from view during daylight hours. As twilight descends, a whole new cast of characters emerges, revealing the secrets of the nocturnal world.

Throughout the tour, it’s essential to stay alert and observant as you explore the dimly lit pathways and exhibits. Many animals are naturally adapted to thrive in darkness, making this twilight adventure an ideal time to catch a glimpse of these elusive creatures.

As you wander through the zoo’s enchanting grounds, you may come across fascinating nocturnal species that are rarely seen during regular visiting hours. Imagine encountering graceful bats as they gracefully swoop through the air or spotting an owl perched high in a tree, silently observing its surroundings.

The Honolulu Zoo Twilight Tour offers an exceptional opportunity to witness these creatures in action and learn about their unique adaptations. Guides with extensive knowledge will share fascinating insights into their behaviors and survival strategies in low-light conditions.

But it’s not just bats and owls that await your discovery. The zoo is also home to other intriguing nocturnal inhabitants such as bushbabies, night-active reptiles, and even some insects that come alive under cover of darkness. Each encounter presents a chance to deepen your understanding of these remarkable creatures and appreciate their significance in our ecosystem.

Remember, while exploring the zoo after hours, respect for both the animals and their environment is paramount. Keep a safe distance from enclosures, follow any instructions provided by guides or staff, and refrain from using flash photography or making loud noises that could disturb the animals’ natural behaviors.

So when you embark on your Honolulu Zoo Twilight Tour adventure, be sure to keep an eye out for these extraordinary creatures that choose to reveal themselves under the moonlit sky. With a curious spirit and attentive gaze, you’ll have the chance to witness the wonders of the nocturnal world and create memories that will last a lifetime.

As the sun sets and twilight takes hold, you’ll be treated to a spectacle of sights and sounds that are simply begging to be captured.

Imagine capturing the graceful movements of an owl as it swoops through the dimly lit sky or freezing a moment in time as a family of bushbabies playfully interact under moonlight. These are the moments that make the Honolulu Zoo Twilight Tour truly unforgettable, and having your camera at hand ensures you can relive them time and time again.

Whether you’re an experienced photographer or simply enjoy capturing memories, this tour provides ample opportunities to snap incredible shots. From close-ups of exotic animals to atmospheric shots of illuminated pathways, every corner of the zoo offers a picture-perfect moment waiting to be framed.
