15 Must-Know Things About Visiting Ports of Call on a Cruise

When it comes to your cruise, the majority of time is spent on the ship, but perhaps nothing is looked forward to as much as visiting ports of call.

Ports of call are a major part of any cruise, but you might have questions on what exactly to expect. Here's everything you need to know about your visit.

These port visits are a chance to get out, stretch your legs, explore a new place, and perhaps hit the beach or take in the sights. And during all of that, you’ll hopefully make some memories and do things you’d never get a chance to do back home.

But before you get off the ship, there’s plenty you will want to know about visiting. From what you need to bring with you into port to what the debarkation process (getting off the ship) is like, to safety, we’ve covered everything you’d want to know.

In This Article...

What Is There to Do in Port?

Every port is unique, offering different things for cruise passengers to do. As well, different regions offer different options. For example, what you do in Cozumel, Mexico isn’t going to be the same as what you’d do in Ketchikan, Alaska.

For trips to the Caribbean (which make up the bulk of cruises from the United States), most things to do revolve around eating, shopping, and the beach. Ports will have lots of restaurants catering to cruise passengers, as well as plenty of shops selling everything from cheap trinkets to fine jewelry.

The cruise line will also offer excursions that you can book that will give you a chance to do things you wouldn’t be able to back home. These trips can range from tequila or chocolate tasting to visiting cultural sights, but most often tend to be beach activities. This includes things like snorkeling tours and beach getaways with catered food and drink.

One nice thing is that cruise excursions offer a wide variety of options and purposely have options that are good for families or people with mobility issues. So if you want to go on an adventure sailing a catamaran or scuba diving, you can. But you can also have an easy driving tour of the port with a meal.

Ports in other parts of the world are decidedly different and are more likely to revolve around cultural activities or exploring the area. For instance, in Alaska you can go on trips to see glaciers or explore the natural scenery.

No matter where you visit, however, there will be plenty to do.

How Long Does the Ship Stay in Port?

For as much as ports are featured when booking your cruise, you spend surprisingly little time in each under most circumstances.

Each ship has a different schedule, but you can expect to normally spend about 8-9 hours in port at each stop. Ships normally arrive first things in the morning (7-8 a.m.) and then leave in the late afternoon or early evening (4-6 p.m.). As well, passengers normally aren’t let off right when the ship docks and they also need to be onboard before the ship departs. This limits the time more.

While that stay may seem short, for most people it’s perfectly fine. It offers plenty of time to explore and go have an adventure, while making it back for dinner and evening on the ship.

Some cruise lines are opening up more overnight stays in ports or extended hours that stretch well into the evening.

Do I Have to Book a Shore Excursion?

A shore excursion is essentially a guided tour or activity in a port. This can include everything from simple walking tours to scuba diving to days at the beach. They are sold through the cruise line, but they are completely optional. ( See our full guide to shore excursions here. )

Your time in port is yours and you can spend it how you want. Shore excursions give you an easy way to go enjoy a port that you might not be familiar with. Booking through the cruise line is normally a little pricey (expect to spend about $100 per person), but offers an amazing amount of convenience. In our experience, we’ve always thought prices were high when booking, but afterward always felt like they were worth the money.

But if you want to save cash, or simply want to take it easy, then you don’t have to book anything. In fact, many people simply go explore ports on their own instead of being part of a bigger tour.

Do You Have to Get Off the Ship in Port?

Empty ship in a port of call

When you are on a cruise, the ship is your home away from home. And just like at home, you don’t have to go anywhere if you don’t want. Getting off the ship is optional.

In fact, many people enjoy staying onboard while in port as the ship is much calmer with fewer people. While there aren’t as many crew-led activities, the ship is still open. Meals are still served, and services like the spa, shopping, and more are also open. (The casino will likely be closed, however.)

For some, ports of call can be more fun on the ship than off.

What Is the Debarkation Process in Port Like?

You might think that getting off the ship is as simple as just walking off when you’re ready. It’s slightly more complicated than that.

First, once the ship docks in port, expect it to take about 30 minutes for the ship to be cleared by the authorities to let passengers off. At that point there will be an announcement that you are free to go ashore.

At this time you’ll head down to the gangway deck. Early in the day there will likely be a line to leave the ship. As you leave the security staff will scan your keycard, which lets them know you are off the vessel.

Tender into port from cruise ship

If the ship is anchored offshore (some ports are too shallow or don’t have the facilities to dock large ships), then you will be tendered to shore. The tender is a smaller boat that carries dozens of passengers at once into the port of call.

If your ship is docked at a pier, you then simply walk off the ship and head into shore. It can be a long way from the pier to land, and there are often shuttles for those with mobility issues.

What’s the Embarkation Process Like?

Ready to get back on the ship? You can head back anytime. When you leave the ship, the staff will let you know if you need your keycard and ID to get back on, or just your keycard. These days it’s a good idea just to bring both items with you as more ports seem to be requiring them to return to the ship.

When you’re ready to go back, there is often a checkpoint on land where you’ll show your ship keycard and/or ID. This is to ensure only cruise passengers are heading back to the ship. Show the security officer your card, and you’ll then be able to access the pier to get back. (Note: Some ports have started a security screening on land as well, with metal detectors and x-ray machines.)

Once at the ship, you’ll head through a security checkpoint with a metal detector and an x-ray for your belongings. If you bring any alcohol back on the ship with you, it will be taken and held in storage until the end of the cruise and then returned. Your keycard will also be scanned.

After being cleared, you are free to enjoy the ship, head back to the room, or anything else you’d like to do.

Are Ports of Call Safe?

In general tourist areas of the Caribbean and The Bahamas (the most visited destinations for American cruise passengers) can be considered safe. These spots cater to cruise passengers, which means making them comfortable. Crimes against cruise passengers are simply bad for business.

In fact, many ports now have built up areas right around the pier that feature lots of shops, restaurants, and more for passengers to enjoy, along with limited access from the general public. Apart from vendors, these areas are nothing but other cruise passengers.

That said, except for the case of private islands, ports of call aren’t an extension of the ship. So we suggest not letting your guard down. Feel free to enjoy yourself, but don’t flash fancy jewelry or cash or otherwise make yourself a target for crime.

The vast majority of people will have no issues regarding crime in ports, but it can happen.

What Should I Bring Into Port?

cruise ship port information

When you go into port, it’s important that you pack everything you’ll need for the day. After all, getting from the ship to the actual port can be about 10-15 minutes between getting your card scanned and walking down the pier to land. If you forget something, that means it’s a 20-30 minute round trip at a minimum. Instead, it’s a good idea to pack what you need.

We have a full list of suggestions here , but a few of the more important items include:

Your Keycard & ID: You don’t have to worry about forgetting your keycard. You have to have it in your hand to get off the ship. Still, it is a must as you won’t be able to get back on the ship without it. As well, it’s a good idea to bring some ID. It doesn’t have to be a passport, but many ports require some sort of photo ID (like a license) before letting you get back to the pier to board the ship.

Walking Shoes: Sandals or flip-flops are a good idea for hitting the beach, but many people do a surprising amount of walking in port. For instance, the pier alone can be 1,000 feet long, and that’s just to get into port. We suggest wearing some comfy walking shoes as you head in and bringing a pair of flip-flips with you for once you are on the beach.

Cash: On the ship everything is paid for with your room keycard. It is extremely convenient, but it doesn’t work for spending in ports of call. There, you can use a credit card, but it’s a good idea to bring some cash for the day.

For more things to bring in port, see our article here .

Do I Need to Know Another Language in Port?

No, you don’t have to know Spanish in ports in the Caribbean. While many ports have Spanish as the local language, English is widely spoken in all ports of call. Even if you don’t know “hola” from “adios,” you will be just fine.

Do I Need to Exchange Money in Port?

Having to change currency multiple times as ships head from port to port would be a major hassle. Luckily, ports of call in North America all widely accept U.S. dollars. There’s no need to change over money, but you should know that if you pay in dollars you might get change back in a different currency.

You can also use your credit card in many locations, just as you would back home.

If traveling Europe, you’ll want euros as the most convenient way to spend money.

What if I am Late Getting Back to the Ship From Port?

Thinking you might be late to go back to the cruise ship? The “all aboard” times are not suggestions. While the ship doesn’t leave the dock right when everyone is supposed to have been aboard, there is a limited window for you to make it back. Our suggestion is to plan to be back on the ship one hour before the all aboard time that’s given. That gives you some wiggle room in case something comes up.

And yes, cruise ships will leave even if you aren’t back aboard. It’s not something you want to happen to you.

Will My Phone Work in Port?

In the middle of the ocean, there is cell service, but it is expensive to access. In port your phone will work, but keep in mind that you will be accessing via international towers, which can be pricey.

The good news is that these days cell plans often include some international access, especially for Mexico. That means some people can use their phone just like they can back home. As well, cell companies sell cruise ship and/or international plans if they don’t give you access already. For a small fee you can use your phone while in port without seeing huge charges. That gives you a chance to call home or check email without spending a fortune.

If you aren’t sure what your plan allows, contact them to see how they can help. International plans for cruise travel are typically affordable. You can see more information about using your phone on a cruise here .

Is There Wi-Fi in Port?

Cruise ships offer wi-fi access even in the middle of the ocean, but it can be expensive — $20-30 per day in many cases.

If you can, wait until you get into port. Sometimes there are stores or restaurants in the port area that offer customers wi-fi for free. This gives you a chance to hop on and check email without having to pay a fortune like you would on the ship. Other times there are vendors selling wi-fi access in the port area.

Keep in mind this isn’t the case for every port, so it’s not a guarantee that you’ll be able to get online. Even so, given the cost of access while on the ship, it can be worth taking the chance.

What’s the Difference Between Private Islands and Normal Ports of Call?

Things to do on CocoCay

Many cruise lines offer stops at their own private islands, such as Royal Caribbean’s CocoCay .

The islands are exactly what they sound like. They are for the private use of cruise line passengers. So when you get off the ship, everyone there with you will be a passenger from your ship. Private islands cater to those visiting from the ship, typically offering easy access to beaches, drinks, food, and lots of activities and excursions. In short, they are a paradise created for cruisers and largely an extension of the ship. In fact, drink packages and wi-fi bought on the ship often work on private islands as well.

Typical ports of call also cater to cruise passengers, but they are independent of the cruise line. They are a jumping off point to go explore the area, and offer things you can’t get on private islands like cultural activities and an experience that’s not perfectly curated by the cruise line. While still touristy, they are more authentic than you’d get on a private island.

Think of the differences as similar to visiting Miami on vacation versus visiting Disney World. Both can offer a great time, but a very different atmosphere and experience.

What Else Should I Know About Visiting Port?

We highly recommend doing at least one excursion when visiting a port of call during your cruise . They can be pricey, but offer the ability to do things you simply can’t do back home and will make lifetime memories.

If your cruise is stopping at a private island and then one or two regular ports of call, we suggest scheduling the excursion for one of the regular ports of call. Private islands typically have easy-to-access beaches and things to do for free and without much fuss. The better things to do in most regular ports often carry costs, so it makes sense to pay for the excursion in these places.

Another tip is that ports of call are great if you forgot something at home. Didn’t remember deodorant? Or maybe you packed a toothbrush, but no toothpaste? Or you want some ibuprofen for a headache or more sunscreen?

To be sure, all of these items are available on the ship. Cruise ships have small shops selling sundries that you might need. The only issue is that they are expensive. For instance, we’ve seen a bottle of cold medicine for more than $17.

Instead, most ports have a small shop or pharmacy that sells anything you might need at more reasonable prices.

Introduction to Cruise Ports

Embarking on a cruise vacation is an exciting experience that combines relaxation, adventure, and discovery. A fundamental part of this experience revolves around visiting various cruise ports . To help vacationers navigate through these ports, we have prepared this cruise ports guide .

What is a Cruise Port?

A cruise port, also known as a port of call, is a location where a cruise ship docks during its itinerary. These ports serve as gateways to the cities, towns, or islands that they are located in. Passengers disembark from the ship to explore the local attractions, participate in excursions, and soak in the culture and beauty of the destination. The duration of a ship’s stay at a cruise port can range from a few hours to multiple days, depending on the cruise itinerary.

Cruise ports are found all over the world, from the sunny Caribbean islands to the rugged Alaskan coast, and from the vibrant cities of Europe to the exotic locales of Asia. Each cruise port offers a unique set of attractions, activities, and experiences for travelers. You can explore our comprehensive list of cruise ports to discover more about these exciting destinations.

Understanding Cruise Ports Basics

The experience at each cruise port can vary significantly based on several factors. These include the size of the port, the proximity of attractions to the port, the local transportation options, and the types of activities available.

Size of the Port: The size of a cruise port can range from a simple docking area in a small town to a sprawling complex with multiple terminals and facilities. Larger ports may offer more amenities such as shops, restaurants, and tour operators, while smaller ports may provide a more intimate and local experience.

Proximity of Attractions: Some cruise ports are located in the heart of cities or towns, allowing passengers to walk directly into the action. Other ports may be located further away, necessitating transportation to reach key attractions.

Local Transportation: Depending on the port, there may be a variety of transportation options available including taxis, buses, shuttles, or even bicycles. It’s important to research these options in advance to make the most of your time at port.

Types of Activities: The activities available at a cruise port can range from sightseeing and shopping to adventure excursions, cultural experiences, and culinary exploration. It’s recommended to plan your activities in advance to ensure a smooth and enjoyable visit.

Understanding these basics can help you plan your cruise port visits effectively and enhance your overall cruise experience. Stay tuned for more detailed insights and tips in our comprehensive cruise ports guide .

Factors to Consider When Planning a Cruise Port Visit

When planning a cruise vacation, one critical aspect to consider includes the logistics of your cruise port visits . Understanding the distance from the port to town and the available local transportation options can greatly enhance your trip experience.

Distance from Port to Town

The distance from the cruise port to the nearest town can vary significantly depending on the location. Some ports may be conveniently located within walking distance of the town center, while others may require a taxi ride or a shuttle bus to reach the main areas of interest.

It’s essential to research this in advance to ensure you allocate sufficient time for transportation. You wouldn’t want to miss your ship’s departure due to a miscalculation in travel time.

For example, consider the following distances for a few popular cruise ports :

Local Transportation Options

Once you’ve determined the distance from the port to town, the next step is to explore the local transportation options. These could include taxis, shuttle buses, public transportation, or even bike rentals, depending on the port.

In some ports, the local authorities provide free shuttle buses to and from the town center. In others, you may need to arrange for a taxi or use public transportation. It’s recommended to check the availability, cost, and reliability of these services ahead of time to ensure a smooth and enjoyable visit.

For example, here are some common transportation options in various cruise ports :

By taking the time to research the distance from port to town and the available transportation options, you can plan your cruise port visits effectively. This will allow you to make the most of your time ashore and enjoy all the unique attractions and experiences that the best cruise ports have to offer.

Dining at Cruise Ports

One of the most exciting aspects of visiting different cruise ports is the opportunity to explore the local culinary scene. Each port city offers its own unique food and beverages that reflect the region’s culture, history, and traditions.

Identifying Local Culinary Delights

When you disembark at a new port, take the time to discover the local gastronomy. Many port cities are known for specific dishes or ingredients that are a must-try for visitors. For instance, if you’re at one of the Caribbean cruise ports , you might want to sample the fresh seafood or traditional jerk chicken. Meanwhile, a stop at the Mediterranean cruise ports may offer the chance to try authentic pizza, olives, or tzatziki.

To find the best local dishes, do some research about the port city’s food culture before your trip. You can also ask the locals for recommendations once you arrive. Many people are proud of their local cuisine and will be happy to share their favorite dishes with you.

Tips for Finding Good Restaurants

Finding good restaurants in a new city can be a challenge, especially when there are so many options to choose from. Here are a few tips to help you navigate the dining scene at different cruise ports :

  • Research Ahead of Time: Look up the top-rated restaurants in the port city before your trip. Websites and apps that provide customer reviews can be a great resource.
  • Ask the Locals: Once you arrive at the port, ask locals for their restaurant recommendations. They often know the best spots that might not be listed in guidebooks.
  • Look for Busy Places: Restaurants that are packed with locals are usually a good sign. If a place is busy, it often means that the food is delicious and reasonably priced.
  • Opt for Local Cuisine: When choosing a restaurant, look for places that specialize in local cuisine. This will give you a more authentic dining experience.
  • Consider the Location: Restaurants located near tourist hotspots tend to be more expensive. If you’re willing to walk or take public transportation a bit further, you might find better deals and more authentic food.

Dining at cruise ports is a culinary adventure that allows you to taste the flavors of the world. So, whether you’re sampling fresh seafood in Alaska, savoring pasta in Italy, or trying sushi in Japan, make sure to enjoy the unique culinary experiences that each port city offers. Tips for a Smooth Cruise Port Visit

Visiting a new cruise port can be an exciting adventure. However, to make the most out of your visit, it’s important to plan ahead and be mindful of your safety. Here are some tips to help you navigate your way around any cruise port.

Planning Your Visit

Planning your visit to a cruise port can greatly enhance your experience. Start by researching the port you’re visiting. Look into the local attractions, activities, and dining options. This can help you create a flexible itinerary for your day ashore.

When planning your visit, consider the distance from the port to the main town or city. You may need to arrange transportation if the distance is significant. Also, research the local customs and regulations of each port to avoid any potential issues.

If you’re unsure where to start, our cruise ports guide is an excellent resource that can provide you with valuable information about various cruise ports around the world.

Safety Considerations

While exploring a new port, safety should always be your top priority. Be aware of your surroundings at all times and avoid venturing into unfamiliar areas alone. Follow the advice of your cruise line and local authorities regarding safety measures.

It’s also important to ensure that your personal belongings are secure. Keep your important documents, money, and valuables in a safe place. Avoid displaying expensive jewelry or gadgets, as these can attract unwanted attention.

Lastly, always be aware of the time. Make sure to return to your cruise ship well before the scheduled departure time to avoid being left behind.

Making the Most of Your Time at Port

To fully enjoy your time at a cruise port, it’s important to balance your activities. Don’t try to cram too many things into your schedule. Instead, choose a few key attractions or activities that you’re most interested in and spend time enjoying them.

Remember to also leave some time for relaxation. This could be enjoying a leisurely lunch at a local restaurant, spending time at a beach, or simply strolling around the local markets.

Consider trying something new at every port. This could be a local dish, a cultural activity, or a unique attraction. This not only creates memorable experiences but also enriches your overall travel experience.

Making the most of your time at a cruise port can turn your cruise vacation into a truly unforgettable adventure. For more tips and advice, check out our comprehensive cruise ports guide .

West Coast United States Cruise Ports

Seattle, washington cruise port.

By Chris, from the Amateur Traveler

Seattle has grown to be the largest cruise ship port on the West Coast of the USA. Most of the traffic is heading to an inside passage cruise to Alaska from Seattle, with over 200 departures in a typical year.

Most major cruise lines sail from Seattle, including Carnival, Oceania, Norwegian, Holland America, Princes s, Celebrity, and Royal Caribbean. Seattle has two different cruise terminals: Bell Street Cruise Terminal and Smith Cove Cruise Terminal.

Cruise ship in the water with the Seattle, Washington skyline behind it.

The Bell Street Cruise terminal is very close to downtown. It is around 1,500 feet from the Seattle Marina. This is a bit farther to the Seattle Great Wheel and just down the hill from the Pike Place Market. An able-bodied person can easily get to a number of popular attractions on foot from the terminal. 1,700 parking places across the street charge $23 a day. This terminal can berth one cruise ship.

The Smith Cove Cruise Terminal is at Pier 91, 3.5 miles further northwest along the coast. It's not really close to anything. The closest of the well-known landmarks would probably be the Space Needle, which is about a 50-minute walk from the pier. It has 1,000 parking spaces and charges $27 a day. This terminal can berth two cruise ships.

There are lots of  things to do in Seattle , including world-class museums like the Chihuly Museum, The Pacific Science Museum, and the Museum of Pop Culture. There are landmarks like the Space Needle and Pike Place Market.

Some of the more unique things to do include the underground tour near Pioneer Square and the  Locks Cruise . If you are heading to Alaska, stop at the Klondike Gold Rush National Historical Park to learn more about the history of Alaska.

Check out these Seattle tours:

  • 20-Minute Scenic Tour Over Seattle in a Small Airplane (only a 15-minute Uber ride from the port)
  • Premiere 3-Hour Seattle City Tour

San Francisco, California US Cruise Port

By Jyoti, from Story at Every Corner

Few people would think of San Francisco as a cruise port city. And rightfully so, as many more visitors arrive by air, road, train or other means. The big commercial port of the area is across the bay in Oakland.

However, when considering the United States cruise ports map, ships sailing the western coastline of North America dock at one of the cruise terminals along Embarcadero street every summer. One could spend the day just on the piers visiting the Fisherman’s Wharf area for all sorts of entertainment: sailing the bay, visiting Alcatraz Island, dining etc.

Golden Gate bridge in San Francisco, CA.

Parking is convenient but expensive in San Francisco so it’s best to take a rideshare, public transit or have someone drop you off at the terminal. There are bicycle rickshaws along the piers so it’s easy to travel between the piers and attractions.

Some of the most popular things to see in the city are the Golden Gate Bridge, Golden Gate Park, Palace of Fine Arts, Fisherman’s Wharf, Coit Tower, The Seven Sister, Nob Hill, SFMOMA, Yerba Buena Gardens, the Missions, etc. The list goes on and on.

Besides the famous landmarks, one can visit the lesser-known hidden gems of the community, such as beautiful mosaic steps and sunset sail in San Francisco Bay .

For chocolate lovers, Ghirardelli Square is an absolute must. And it’s close to the piers.

There is so much to see and do just within the tiny Doty of San Francisco that you could spend the week. If you have more time, there are many incredible day trips you could take from San Francisco , such as Silicon Valley, Yosemite NP, Monterey Peninsula, and Lake Tahoe to name a few.

Cruise Port at San Diego, California

By Maria of San Diego Explorer

The United States cruise port in San Diego is one of the most convenient ports in the world. It mainly offers cruises heading south to Mexico or up the California Coast. But you can also find itineraries to Hawaii and even the South Pacific.

Holland America and Norwegian are the most common cruise lines that sail from here, but some ships from Silversea, Celebrity, and Disney Cruise Line have added San Diego to their United States cruise ports map.

Cruise ships dock right in the heart of Downtown San Diego. From here, cruisers can explore the top attractions of San Diego on foot, including the San Diego Gaslamp Quarter, the USS Midway and Maritime Museum, Balboa Park , and much more.

If you still have not had enough time on the sea, you can do a  Flagship Harbor Cruise  to enjoy the sights of San Diego from the water. You can also hop on a ferry to cross the bay over to Coronado Island. Explore its quaint downtown, the famous Hotel Del Coronado, and its magnificent beaches.

Another fun excursion is a trip to La Jolla. Here, you can check out the seals sunbathing on the rocks, go kayaking around the caves, and watch the sunset over the stunning coastline.

cruise ship port information

If San Diego is the starting and endpoint of your cruise and you need to park your car, your best option is airport parking; the airport parking lots are a short cab ride away from the San Diego cruise terminal. If you arrive by Amtrak at Santa Fe station , you can even walk to the cruise terminal.

United States Cruise Ports in Alaska

Ketchikan alaska cruise port.

By Ellie, from Ellie's Travel Tips

As the “Salmon Capital of the World,” Ketchikan is one of the top cruise ports in the United States. While you can book a flight to Ketchikan through a 90-minute flight from Seattle, the easiest way to get to Ketchikan is through an ocean cruise from either Anchorage, Seattle, or Vancouver.

Most major cruise lines offer sailings to Ketchikan during the Alaskan cruise season, between April and September. Popular cruise lines visiting Ketchikan include Royal Caribbean, Norwegian Cruise Line, Carnival, and Celebrity Cruises.

cruise ship port information

One of the best  things to do in Ketchikan  is explore the nearby Misty Fjords National Monument. This stunning Alaskan landscape stretches over 3 million acres and is the spot to find moose, sea lions, killer and humpback whales, wolverines, and much more!

Another fantastic Ketchikan activity is seeking out the Ketchikan totem poles. This beautiful Alaskan cruise port is home to the largest collection of totem poles in the world, each representing a unique story of the local native tribes.

When you are visiting Ketchikan, make sure to try some of the best salmon in the world. There are plenty of street vendors located downtown offering free samples. Overall, Ketchikan is truly one of the most remarkable ports in the United States, perfect for any cruising adventure.

Sitka Cruise Port in Alaska

By Dan and Mikkel, from Sometimes Sailing

Sitka quickly became a favorite cruise port and city when we arrived there one summer to explore Alaska. It's where we boarded our small cruise ship with Alaskan Dream Cruises to sail the Inside Passage, but large cruise ships stop in Sitka, too.

It's a very special city, and we recommend extending your vacation to spend time in Sitka before or after your cruise. There's plenty to do, from wildlife spotting tours to hiking, learning about salmon, and visiting Sitka National Historical Park with totem poles to admire.

It's unlikely you'll drive to Alaska to start your cruise, instead opting to fly to their small airport, which is just a five-minute drive from the center of downtown Sitka.

Cruise Port at Icy Strait Point in Hoonah, Alaska

When we think of the United States cruise ports map, one of the most magical ports is in Alaska, And it may not be as readily recognizable as a city like Juneau, their capital. But it's definitely one of the most interesting! This US Cruise Port, Icy Strait Point , earned the award for “Port of the Year” by Seatrade in 2020.

There is a ton to do here, including a Ziprider zip line that will knock your socks off, a salmon cannery to tour, whale-watching excursions, and an awesome gondola ride. Though it's possible to arrive at the port with a flight and a ferry ride, most people arrive via cruise ship.

View of a cruise ship on the berth of Icy Strait Point in Hoonah, Alaska

Walk along the beach with a local beer in hand or try a Crabby Bloody Mary in Hoonah. Get to know the native people, the Tlingit, through cultural performances and interactions. Interestingly enough, the port is actually owned by about 1,450 native Alaskans, many with ties to the Tlingit.

Cruise lines that commonly sail to Hoonah, Alaska, to visit Icy Strait Point, are Norwegian Cruise Line, Royal Caribbean, Disney Cruise Line , Cunard, Oceania, Windstar, and more.

Juneau Cruise Port

By Nicole, of Eat Live Travel Drink

Juneau is a fantastic United States cruise port to visit while taking either an Inside Passage or Glacier Bay cruise. It is usually one of the main ports on either itinerary.

Something unique to know about Juneau is that it is landlocked. The only way to get there is by boat or plane.

Some of the popular cruise lines that visit Alaska on their itineraries include Norwegian Cruise Line, Holland America, Windstar, Princess Cruises, Celebrity Cruises , and more. There is definitely a wide selection of cruise companies and ships to choose from to reach Juneau.

Iceberg in the water in Juneau, Alaska.

If you do not wish to fly here to start your cruise, you can start in Seattle or in Vancouver, both of which have many itineraries that sail to Alaska.

Pro tip: get a room with a balcony so you can enjoy Alaskan scenery your entire cruise at any time of the day. The waters tend to be very calm, and you never know what wildlife you will see. (Alaska has bald eagles, whales, otters, and even bears.)

Alaska cruise season runs from about May to September. The weather can range from cold winter temperatures to high summer heat within a short time, so pack for any scenario; be prepared for the weather to change at any moment.

Things to do in Juneau include seeing Tracy Arm Fjord and Mendenhall Glacier, going white water rafting, whale watching, taking a seaplane ride, or even flying over glaciers.

Central United States Cruise Ports

Mobile, alabama.

By Lori, of Fitz5 on the Go

Mobile, Alabama, is a historic southern city located on the northwest side of Mobile Bay. The city is rich in history and charm.

Mobile's US cruise terminal was built in 2001, and hosts the Carnival Cruise line ships. Mobile has hosted several Carnival ships but was quiet from 2011 to 2016 until a new contract was signed and Carnival returned. Carnival's Fantasy has made its home in Mobile, before it was replaced by Carnival Fascination in 2022. But no matter the cruise ships currently in residence, cruises from Mobile are very affordable.

cruise ship port information

The cruise port of Mobile, Alabama, is easy to get to by car from I-10. The closest airport is Mobile, airport code MOB. It may be more cost-effective to fly into one of the surrounding airports, including New Orleans, Gulfport, and Pensacola.

The cruise terminal has onsite parking for 500 vehicles and overflow parking down the street. Parking rates are listed at $72 for a four-day cruise and $126 for a seven-day cruise. Several nearby hotels include Hilton's The Admiral hotel, Marriott's Battle House , and the Malaga Inn.

Mobile has many activities to enjoy while visiting the city. The downtown area near the port is fun to explore and features museums, beautiful older buildings, and delicious food. The USS Alabama Battleship from the 1940s, at Battleship Memorial Park, is also a great place to visit.

Mobile is a wonderful and easy choice as a location to sail off for your next cruise.

Galveston, Texas

By Lee and Stacey, from One Trip at a Time

The port of Galveston, Texas, on a barrier island 50 miles south of Houston, is one of the first ports developed for the mega-ships that visit sunny destinations on eastern and western Caribbean itineraries. It’s been steadily growing as a hub port in the Gulf of Mexico and features two cruise terminals for ships from Carnival, Disney Cruise Line, and Royal Caribbean.

Because of Galveston’s location, it’s only about 30 minutes to the open sea of the Gulf of Mexico; it won’t take you long to start enjoying refreshing sea breezes!

cruise ship port information

Galveston is also a beach resort area with island vibes and a vibrant port. Within walking distance of the cruise terminals, you can stroll the historic Strand District with its pretty Victorian-era buildings that are home to restaurants, galleries, and museums.

Or, go aboard the Tall Ship Elissa, a three-masted, iron-hulled 1800s ship that is part of the Seaport Museum. If you're cruising with children, a visit to Moody Gardens is a must, especially to explore their aquarium and rainforest ecosystems. You can even sign up for lessons in building amazing sandcastles on the beach!

We recommend arriving a day or two before your cruise to extend your vacation with so many things to see and do in Galveston . Many hotels offer “Park & Cruise” deals if you stay with them.

There are several other cruise parking lots, like Galveston Park N Cruise, within walking distance of the port. This means you'll have easy luggage drop-off and embarkation on your ship to start your cruise vacation as soon as possible!

East Coast United States Cruise Ports

Boston, massachusetts.

By Mikkel, from Sometimes Sailing

The cruise port of Boston, MA, is just a short car ride from the heart of the city. We sailed from Boston to Quebec City on a New England and Canada cruise with Holland America Line.

As many cruise ports have, the Boston port is partially industrial. But the cruise passenger terminal has some pops of color to spark some interest and is well-labeled with signage everywhere.

There are elevators and escalators, bathrooms, and even a water bottle filling station (though you cannot go through security with water).

There's plenty to do in Boston, from historic sightseeing to eating at great restaurants where local seafood (like lobster) is a highlight to taking a duck boat tour in the Boston Harbor.

Port of Boston Parking

Parking at the terminal is in an uncovered, open-air lot. The rate for cruise passengers is $20 per day. Cash, Visa or MasterCard are accepted forms of payment.

Uber and Lyft are available in Boston. Additionally, there is a cell phone lot for anyone waiting to pick up passengers at the port.

Cape Liberty, New Jersey Cruise Port

Celebrity Beyond cruise ship in port at Cape Liberty in NJ, a US Cruise Port.

Just a few miles outside of Manhattan is the Cape Liberty Cruise port in Bayonne, New Jersey.

Though the area is particularly attractive immediately surrounding the cruise port (it's an industrial port for the most part, even though some of the drive there is really pretty along the waterfront), there's something very special here: you can see the Statue of Liberty from the cruise while it's in port, on a clear day. It's truly breathtaking!

You can also very clearly see the NYC skyline too.

Cruising from this NJ USA cruise port is beneficial because of the abundance of airports nearby, including Newark, Westchester, JFK, and LaGuardia.

If you want to extend your trip, there are endless things to do in NYC, from world-class restaurants to Broadway, Central Park, The High Line, and more.

Parking or Getting to Cape Liberty Cruise Port

You can drive to the cruise port, take a car service like Uber or Lyft, or take public transportation.

Without traffic from the west side, central or south Manhattan, it could be a 35-minute drive to the port. With traffic, it could be over an hour. We spent about $60 from NYC to NJ to board Celebrity Beyond . From NJ to NYC was more expensive, at around $80.

You can also take the PATH train to NJ, then call a cab to go the rest of the distance from the station to the cruise terminal in Bayonne. Go from Manhattan to one of these NJ stations on the PATH: Jersey City, Newport, Exchange Place, or Hoboken.

Alternatively, take the NJ Transit Light Rail on the NJ Hudson-Bergen line toward 8th street Bayonne. Exit at the 34th Street Station in Bayonne, NJ. You'll be just two miles from the cruise port, accessible by cab or ride share, like Uber.

Baltimore, Maryland Cruise Port

By Pamela, from the Directionally Challenged Traveler

Inner Harbor in Baltimore with a view of the downtown Baltimore skyline in the distance.

The Baltimore Cruise Port is a great destination to start off any vacation! The Baltimore Cruise Port is located in the heart of the city, right off Route 95. There is parking available on-site within walking distance of the port.

Passenger vehicles only cost $15 per night; recreational vehicles range from $30-$40 per night based on size. No advanced reservations are required to use the parking lot. Royal Caribbean and Carnival are the two most popular cruise lines that leave from Baltimore.

Extend your time in Baltimore and explore this city rich with personality. One of the best things to do in Baltimore is explore the Inner Harbor. It’s an icon of the city and is home to several attractions.

The USS Constellation is a historic ship built in the mid-1800s and used during the Civil War. Explore the numerous museums around the harbor. Grab a bite at Miss Shirley’s Cafe or Phillips Seafood for fresh crab!

Another great thing to do in Baltimore is take a food tour of the area. Be sure to sign up for a day tour if you need to return to the cruise ship or embark at a certain time.

🦀 Reserve Your Baltimore Tour

For incredible boutique shopping, head to Fells Point. This area of Baltimore had residents before America was even a country! Fans of street art can visit the colorful Graffiti Alley to glimpse at the local culture.

You can visit Edgar Allen Poe’s house and final resting place near Lexington Market. If you need a break from the city, head to Druid Hill Park for some open space. There’s a conservatory with a botanical garden in the park. Keep an eye out for a Druid carved into an old tree!

The ease of access and variety of things to do in the area makes Baltimore one of the best cruise ports in the United States.

Port of Palm Beach, Florida

This port is located just 20 minutes from West Palm Beach airport and is where Margaritaville at Sea will sail from. It's a very easy port to reach with key cities nearby, like West Palm Beach and Lake Worth.

You can easily reach Fort Lauderdale, which is just under an hour away from here.

Port Canaveral, Florida Cruise Port

By Mikkel, from Sometimes Home

Photo of plants in front of the parking in the distance for Port Canaveral U.S. Cruise Port terminal.

One of the most exciting things about driving to the Port Canaveral Cruise Terminal is seeing Disney Cruise Line's ship in port as you drive over the highway to reach your destination. Disney Cruise Line has its own terminal next to Carnival, Royal Caribbean, and Norwegian Cruise Line terminals. (You can check the current list of cruise lines leaving from this port on the Port Canaveral website .)

On a United States cruise ports map, it's on the east coast of central Florida, about an hour away from Orlando.

Naturally, if you're going to Port Canaveral, an obvious choice of nearby things is to visit Lake Buena Vista, where Walt Disney World is, and Orlando, where Universal is. (There's plenty to do in Orlando besides the theme parks, though.) Or, you can enjoy Cape Canaveral and a visit to Kennedy Space Center, which takes an entire day to enjoy.

Disney Cruise Line terminal in Port Canaveral with art deco letters.

You can also head to the beach – like Cocoa Beach to enjoy the pier or Satellite Beach just south of the area. If you're feeling adventurous, you can kayak to find manatees and dolphins in the area on a guided tour.

Parking at Port Canaveral Cruise Terminals

There are several parking garages at the terminals, which is your best bet for getting your car close to your cruise ship. It costs $17 per day, even for partial days.

Offsite parking is also an option here, like at Park Port Canaveral . Rates are better than at the port, and you may save some extra money if you reserve online and prepay.

Alternatively, you can fly to a major airport, like Orlando International Airport (MCO) and take a shuttle over to Port Canaveral. Melbourne International Airport (MLB) is also close to the port; a drive between MLB and Port Canaveral would take about 45 minutes.

Fort Lauderdale, Florida Cruise Port (Port Everglades)

By Derek Hartman and Mike Walsh, from Robe Trotting

Fort Lauderdale, Florida, is one of America’s premier cruise ports. It's called “ Port Everglades .” Conveniently, the cruise ship terminal is only three miles from Fort Lauderdale Airport.

There are some shuttle options, but the best way to reach the terminal from the airport is to take an Uber or taxi. The cost is around $10-15, and most of the shuttles are similar or more in price, but on a fixed schedule.

For example, the Carnival shuttle is $16. Parking at the cruise port is about $15 per day, and many lots require an advanced reservation, so make sure to research before your departure.

cruise ship port information

The port of Fort Lauderdale services some of the biggest cruise lines like Carnival, Royal Caribbean, Princess, Celebrity Cruises, and Holland America. It’s a popular departure point for many themed cruises on these lines, whether Biker-themed, Star Trek-themed, or an LGBTQI+ cruise , for instance.

It's worth noting that Fort Lauderdale is an incredibly gay-friendly city . (This popular south Florida destination and has one of the largest LGBTQI+ communities in the United States of America.)

If you’re sailing from Fort Lauderdale and book a few extra nights in town, you will have plenty of options for entertainment.

There are dinner cruises on the Intracoastal Waterway or you can dine at any of the incredible seafood restaurants in town. The magnificent beaches in Fort Lauderdale are clean and popular with cruise guests before or after their departure, because there is no such thing as too much sand and sun.

Port of Miami (or “PortMiami”), Florida Cruise Port

By Dan, from Sometimes Home

The Port of Miami is an incredibly popular port for many cruise lines to start their sailings. It's been deemed the Cruise Capital of the World with good reason, having four active cruise ports with more in the works. It's at the southern tip of mainland Florida, and their nearby major airports make it easy to get there. (Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport (FLL) is about 45 minutes to an hour from the Port of Miami, and Miami International Airport (MIA) is about 30 minutes away from the port.)

Parking at the Port of Miami will cost about $25 a day, or you can park offsite. There are a few nearby parking options that will shuttle you to the port as part of the parking arrangement (aka: for free), including Safe Cruise Parking and We Park in Miami . These are just two of many options.

Many cruise lines have contracts to dock at the Port of Miami, including Celebrity Cruises, Norwegian Cruise Line, Royal Caribbean, and Disney Cruise Line. Virgin Voyages does as well, and recently opened their brand new dedicated terminal there.

There is plenty to do in the area, like visiting the famous Wynwood, Miami neighborhood, most famous for its mural walls. Or heading to South Beach to start your pre-cruise vacation in the sand.

Key West, Florida US Cruise Port

By Lori, from Travlinmad

Key West, Florida, the Southernmost City in the USA, is one of the most popular and busiest ports-of-call in the Caribbean as reflected by the number of major cruise lines like Carnival and Royal Caribbean that now include the port in their itineraries.

Fisherman’s Wharf at Mallory Square receives the lion’s share of scheduled cruise ships, which gives cruisers a great starting point for exploring the Conch Republic. Depending on the ship’s schedule, time ashore varies from 6-10 hours.

cruise ship port information

If this doesn’t sound like much time to you, you may be right. But there are plenty of  fun things to do in Key West  for those who want a quick taste of the island.

Cruise ship tourists can easily walk to Duval Street where there are island-y restaurants, Jimmy Buffett-style watering holes, souvenir shops, art galleries, trolley tours, and trolley tours. And just off Mallory Square is Key West’s most famous fun bar of all, Sloppy Joe’s Bar.

It’s easy to get around this part of town and everything is close by, from unique museums, funky architecture, and historical sites like the Ernest Hemingway Home & Museum. Just off of Duval Street is the Mel Fisher Museum, Audubon House, and the Key West Aquarium, definitely worth a visit.

No matter how you choose to spend your time, Key West will have you singing “It’s Been a Lovely Cruise.”

San Juan, Puerto Rico Cruise Port

By Annick, from The Common Traveler

San Juan, Puerto Rico is the largest and busiest port in the Caribbean, accommodating up to nine cruise ships at once. Used both as an embarkation point and destination stop, San Juan features on many Caribbean itineraries and is the starting point for many Southern Caribbean cruises.

There are two cruise ports in San Juan. Royal Caribbean and other cruises depart from the Pan American Pier, about a 10-minute car ride from Old San Juan. The three piers next to Old San Juan are mostly used as port stops (as opposed to departure/arrival ports). The only exception is Carnival Cruise Line which departs and arrives in Old San Juan. Celebrity mostly uses the Pan American Pier, even for port stops.

cruise ship port information

Parking decks are available near both the Pan American and Old San Juan piers. Pan American Pier parking is available at the Sheraton or neighboring Isla Grande Airport. Parking is outdoors and varies greatly between $8.56 per day to $22 for valet. Several covered garages are located in Old San Juan, including a few near the piers. Most travelers arrive by taxi to avoid the cost of long-term parking.

San Juan offers a lot to visitors. Old San Juan is a great city to visit on your own as everything is within walking distance. Visit UNESCO World Heritage sites or sample a pina colada where they were first created. There is lots to do on a port day in Old San Juan !

Hawaii United States Cruise Ports

Port of hilo.

By Noel, from This Hawaii Life

One of the Easiest port cities to visit is Hilo, Hawaii located on the Big Island of Hawaii. Servicing the cruising industry that travels to all the islands, Hilo is one of the first stops on the circle island cruise before it goes around the island to the Kona side.

Most of the cruises arrive at the port in the early morning, allowing for a full-day tour of the highlights, which typically are Hilo town, East Hawaii, Volcanoes National Park or even an adventure tour type of package or helicopter tour.

The choices are limitless and since you have the entire day, there's plenty to see. Even renting a car is feasible so you can actually do your own DIY tour and visit more places if you want to see more.

Most visitors opt to tour the Hilo area and highlights and maybe squeeze in some beach time to local beaches that are an easy cab ride or walk from the harbor area.

Although the walk from the port to town is a trek, it's easier to do on a Hop On Hop Off bus that allows you to see all of the best highlights in town in an affordable setup. Check out the  top things to do in Hilo  for more inspiration and touring the city and surrounding area.

United States Cruise Port at Oahu

By Nicole, of Eat Love Travel Drink

Cruise ships in Oahu, Hawaii, dock close to the Aloha Tower Marketplace, which is conveniently located about a 10-20 minute drive from Honolulu International Airport. It's very easy to book a tour from the Oahu, Hawai cruise port too.

The most popular cruise line sailing the Hawaiian Islands is Norwegian Cruise Line. They are docked at Port of Honolulu Pier 2 and are easy to access. You can get a taxi/Uber/Lyft from the airport and is about $30 USD each way.

For parking, the public parking is about ¾’s of a mile away, and the cost is about $21 a day. It may be easier to just take a taxi from the airport, so you don’t have to pay for a rental car and to park it for the duration of your stay.

cruise ship port information

Norwegian’s Cruise Ship in Hawaii used to do 7-day sailings around the island but has now included French Polynesia in some of their itineraries. It is like getting two vacations in one, and you get to stay on the same boat.

Most cruises originate in and out of Oahu, so you will want to plan to stay an extra day or two as not to miss anything.

Some things you should have on your Oahu bucket list include : a visit to the North Shore, Pearl Harbor, Waikiki Beach, piping hot malasada from Leonard’s Bakery, shaved ice, and some snorkeling.

It’s worth the time to mention this!

Hi Bill! Thanks for your comment! There are many cruise ports around the United States, as you’ll see from the map we included. Not all are mentioned in the text but we’re looking forward to expanding on the piece in the future. Thanks for your input! Thanks, Thomas! We are looking forward to writing about Tampa’s cruise port!

Thanks for the information! In the section “Baltimore, Maryland Cruise Port” you have the word porn instead of port. Thought you’d want to know.

Oh my gosh, thank you! Definitely a mistake! Updated it. Whew, thank you SO much, Tricia!

Rotterdam cruise port guide and cruise terminal information

Rotterdam cruise port information.

The Rotterdam Cruise Port boasts a state-of-the-art passenger terminal, which serves as the primary point of arrival and departure for cruise ship passengers. One of the notable advantages of the Rotterdam Cruise Port is its proximity to the city center. Passengers can easily explore Rotterdam’s vibrant attractions, including museums, architectural landmarks, shopping districts, and vibrant culinary scenes. The city’s excellent public transportation system ensures easy access to various points of interest. For people who love to walk and explore cities, the location where the ships dock is close enough to much of the city center by foot, starting off with a lovely walk over the iconic Erasmus Bridge (weather permitting of course).

Rotterdam serves as both a starting point and a port of call for many cruise itineraries. Passengers can embark on cruises to various destinations, including the Baltic Sea, Norwegian fjords, British Isles, Mediterranean, and beyond. The port’s central location allows for convenient access to a range of unique cruise routes.

Rotterdam Cruise Ship Port - Guide

The address of the Rotterdam Cruise Port

The cruise terminal is located at wilhelminakade 909, 3072 ap rotterdam , cruises are not at the “port of rotterdam”.

“Port of Rotterdam” is an industrial facility and is NOT where your cruise will be! Cruise ships dock at the “Cruise Terminal Rotterdam”. If you’re looking for the cruise ship on a map do NOT look for “The Port of Rotterdam” – you’ll be in the wrong place.

How far is Rotterdam city center from the cruise port?

Walking distance from the part of Rotterdam to the city center (Blaak) where Markthal and the Cube Houses are is approximately 30 minutes by foot (1.5 miles / 2.5km). Alternatively, the Metro station just outside of the cruise ship will get you to the same location in just 10 minutes. When you exit the ship, go left towards Wilhelminaplein metro station.

Cruise Terminal Rotterdam public transport options, Getting to and from the Rotterdam Cruise Terminal

The Rotterdam Cruise Port is well-connected to the city’s public transportation network. Passengers can easily access taxis, public buses, and the nearby Rotterdam Central Station (Or Rotterdam Blaak, the actual city center), which provides connections to other parts of the city and the wider Netherlands. Additionally, the port offers ample parking facilities for passengers who choose to arrive by car.

The most convenient method to discover the city with public transportation is to make use of the Metro station (Whileminaplien) just a short walking distance from the ships.

How far is the train station in Rotterdam from the cruise port? Can you walk to Rotterdam Central Station from the Rotterdam Cruise Port?

Yes, it’s possible with a 45-minute walk (about 2 miles away), however, the Metro goes directly to Central Station which may be a better option for people with more limited time or mobility issues.

Here’s a map of the Rotterdam Cruise Port

How to get from rotterdam cruise port to amsterdam.

Getting to Amsterdam from the Rotterdam Cruise Terminal is relatively simple using public transportation. However some people may choose a private transportation service, which can be quite expensive.

The train travel time is about 40 minutes from Rotterdam Centraal Station and tickets are available at a ticket counter or via kiosk. The trains are almost all direct without any changes and will end in the city center of Amsterdam.

How to get from Rotterdam cruise port to Amsterdam airport?

Schiphol Airport is a close train ride from Centraal Station and getting there is relatively simple UNLESS you are traveling with a lot of luggage, then making use of the cruise line shuttle or private taxi is best.

Things to do near the port of Rotterdam:

If you’re not doing any shore excursions, then there is plenty of options to spend a day in Rotterdam! Here are the most popular self-guided activities, however, we’ve prepared a full list of our favorite things to do in Rotterdam in detail!

Walk over the Erasmus bridge

If you’re going to go into the city center on foot, a walk over the New Mass (Nieuwe Maas) via the Erasmusbrug or Erasmus Bridge is required. It’s also a beautiful way to take in the city skyline, take selfies, and observe firsthand the engineering marvel that Rotterdam is famous for.

Explore abundant food options inside the most unusual “food hall” and market in The Netherlands that opened in 2014 with huge fanfare including ceremonies by the Queen.

Markthal is a vibrant and bustling food market housed within a unique horseshoe-shaped building. The structure features a stunning ceiling adorned with colorful artwork, creating a visually captivating environment. Inside, you’ll find a diverse array of food stalls, shops, and restaurants offering a wide variety of fresh produce, local specialties, international cuisine, and gourmet delights. Discover hundreds of stalls serving just about everything you can imagine. So if you’re in the mood for a quick bite or even a leisurely meal, try Markthal. If you’re in the mood for beer and wine, there are plenty of stalls that have bar areas.

The combination of its eye-catching design and culinary offerings makes Markthal a must-visit destination for food enthusiasts and architecture admirers alike.

Euromast is an iconic observation tower in Rotterdam, Netherlands. Standing at 185 meters (607 feet) tall, it offers breathtaking panoramic views of the city and its surroundings. The tower features two observation decks accessible by high-speed elevators. The lower deck, situated at 92 meters (302 feet), provides a wide view of Rotterdam, while the upper deck, located at 112 meters (367 feet), offers an even more extensive panorama. Try Brunch, Lunch or Dinner for a memorable dining experience above the city.

Be sure to book Euromast tickets online , or if you’re dining in the restaurant, make reservations!

SS Rotterdam Tour

The SS Rotterdam is the original transatlantic oceanliner for Holland America Line and has been docked and converted into a floating hotel, restaurant, bar, and tourist attraction. Docked near the Port of Rotterdam (cruise port), it’s relatively easy to get to.  Buy Tickets to the SS Rotterdam !

Popular Shore excursions from Rotterdam

For visitors who want to experience a more authentic Dutch excursion, there are plenty of easily accessible cities and villages that have a lot to offer! A few of our favorites are:

Experience the iconic windmills of The Netherlands by taking the Waterbus directly to the windmills. This is an easy day trip that can be done self-guided by walking or biking among the windmills. Alternatively, there are two windmills open to the public for a nominal fee, where you can tour and learn about how the windmills have helped the Dutch manage water for centuries.

A day trip to Gouda, especially on a weekend, is an amazing way to discover the “Real” Dutch culture. The trip is under 20 minutes from Centraal Station and easily done by train & is one of our favorite Day trips from Rotterdam

The picturesque city is located in the western Netherlands, known for its rich history, cultural heritage, and the world-famous Gouda cheese. It is situated in the province of South Holland and is easily accessible from Rotterdam.

Gouda is famous for its cheese market, which has been held in the city’s central square for centuries. Visitors can witness the traditional cheese weighing and trading ceremonies that have been carried out since the Middle Ages. Gouda cheese itself is internationally renowned for its distinctive taste and creamy texture. The cheese market operates from 10am until 12.30pm every Thursday from April until September . Be sure to check the Gouda travel information website for actual dates and times, as they vary a little year over year.

Delft is a charming city located in the province of South Holland in the Netherlands. Known for its rich history, picturesque canals, and renowned Delftware ceramics, Delft offers a delightful blend of old-world charm and vibrant cultural experiences.

Delft is particularly renowned for its distinctive blue and white ceramics, known as Delftware. Visitors can explore the Royal Delft factory & museum, where they can watch the traditional production methods and admire the exquisite hand-painted pottery. To complete the experience you can join one of the painting workshops and discover the skills needed to be a Royal Delft craftsman (upon reservation).

With its rich cultural heritage, iconic ceramics, and enchanting cityscape, Delft is a must-visit destination for those seeking a glimpse into the Netherlands’ history and artistic traditions.

11 things you should never buy on a cruise ship (or in port)

MSN has partnered with The Points Guy for our coverage of credit card products. MSN and The Points Guy may receive a commission from card issuers.

Editor’s note: This is a recurring post, regularly updated with new information and offers.

Onboard cruise ship shops can be useful, although they’re generally over-priced.

They carry items you may have left at home and find you need. Even the best packer has their suitcase lost by an airline occasionally.

They sell dresses and fancy shirts for the people who show up and then realize that formal nights really do require, you know, formal attire. Also, they’re the only place to purchase cruise line logo items if you wish to proclaim your love of your favorite line to the world.

If you need something, go ahead and buy it. However, cruise ship shops can be dangerous to your wallet — especially after a couple of gloomy rainy days at sea when some shopaholics will buy just about anything to get a hit of that “only on vacation” feeling.

Ships also tempt travelers with other ways to part with their cash, whether pricy spa treatments or fine art sales.

In ports, there are other pitfalls to avoid — products that won’t make it past your local customs officer, those that are hard to transport home and inexpensive (read: poorly made) tchotchkes that are likely to break before you even put the key in your front door.

For cruise news, reviews and tips, sign up for TPG’s cruise newsletter

Here’s our advice on what to avoid when the shopping bug bites on your next cruise vacation. Pay attention if you have a hard time keeping your wallet in your pocket when you’re traveling. You know who you are.

What not to buy on board

Are you a world-renowned connoisseur of art from different time periods with an encyclopedic knowledge of minor artists and their lesser-known works? We didn’t think so.

Unless you want to spend hours frantically searching online for the value of an artwork, stay away from those onboard art auctions — no matter how bad the weather gets or how crowded the pool deck becomes on sea days.

Basic hygiene products are available in the ship’s gift shop for the desperate — and often priced accordingly. If you’re heading into port in the morning and you can wait and buy the product at a regular drugstore, you’ll get a much better deal.

Also, curating a collection of toothpaste, shampoo, nail files and sunscreens from around the world will jazz up your medicine cabinet when you return home and serve as constant reminders of your international adventures.

Another option: Consider buying travel sizes that can live in your suitcase’s toiletry bag permanently to prevent future mishaps.

‘Special’ spa treatments

Sure, an afternoon in the steam room and sauna may help you relax, and some pricier cruise lines have excellent onboard massages and facials.

However, regardless of which ship you sail on, avoid spa treatments with claims that wouldn’t be medically sanctioned back home, such as Ionithermie, which claims to help you lose weight.

Related: The 6 best cruise ship spas

‘Medi’ spa treatments

Some cruise lines offer “medi-spa” treatments, such as Restylane injections, but do read the fine print to learn about the required training. You may be surprised to hear that the “medi” terminology is a bit misleading, and most ships are not sailing with doctors who perform these treatments. Also, sometimes you need multiple visits to experience the desired effects.

You also don’t want to sign up for any treatments that might leave you in pain or impact the food or alcohol you can consume or how much sun you can handle on your vacation. If you’re tempted, read all the fine print and ask about post-treatment care.

Any treatments in spas known for the hard sell

We also recommend avoiding any massage or facial that comes with a hard sell.

How do you know if you’re going to face an aggressive lecture on the products you absolutely can’t leave without purchasing? If the spa won’t promise total silence during your treatment, you may end up feeling like a sitting duck for a sales pitch.

Manicure and pedicures

These salon services are often surprisingly marked up. Also, it takes just one bump from a wave to result in an imperfect finish. Our opinion? Take the time to get your polish done at home or look for a well-reviewed spot in port, but skip the onboard nail salon.

Precious gems

If you’re not already an expert in evaluating gemstones, a cruise is not the best time to make a big-ticket jewelry purchase.

When dropping thousands of dollars, you want to ensure you’re getting the quality you expect. Your mind is elsewhere on a cruise — from the pool and the hot tub to the cocktail lounge or what’s on tonight’s menu.

After all, who wants to spend a sunny afternoon indoors researching gemstone cuts and carats?

What not to buy in port

Souvenirs from the port terminal.

From cheap hammocks in Mexico to inexpensive fans in Spain, the souvenirs you’ll find in trinket-filled shops are designed for the quick grab-and-go.

You went on a shore excursion and didn’t leave time to shop for your nephew? Pick up something at the terminal. The problem is that the quality there is generally low.

If you can, wander into town for a little while to pick up something marketed to locals rather than tourists. Look for souvenirs made by local artisans or produced locally.

Many cruise lines — including Carnival Cruise Line , Costa Cruises , MSC Cruises , Norwegian Cruise Line and Oceania Cruises — will confiscate port-side liquor purchases and return them to you at disembarkation. Luxury lines, such as Regent Seven Seas Cruises and Silversea Cruises , will let you bring alcohol on board.

Still, buying liquor to bring home comes with risks and annoyances unless you are cruising right into your home port. (You weren’t planning on filling your checked luggage with Tahitian vanilla rum, were you?)

That said, if you’re on a river cruise in France that goes through your favorite wine region, we understand if you make an effort to secure your favorite bottles to enjoy back home.

Cured meats and soft or raw cheese

Trying to sneak culinary specialties such as jamon Iberico from Barcelona and raw-milk Comte from France through U.S. customs isn’t worth the stress.

Our advice? Eat your fill in restaurants while on vacation — or as a picnic on your cabin’s balcony — and stick to non-controversial edible souvenirs, such as chocolate.

Fresh fruit

Customs also won’t allow you to bring fresh fruit into the country. In some disembarkation ports, you’ll find bins with signs that threaten fines if you don’t dump any fresh fruit you may have tucked away in your luggage.

Yes, the bananas, mangos, pineapples and coconuts in the Caribbean may be ripe and sweet, but the fines are rich, too.

Look for frozen drinks made from fresh fruit, rather than powders or syrups, when you’re in port so you can get your fill of the real thing before returning home.

2 crew members die during 'incident' on Holland America cruise ship

Nieuw Amsterdam.png

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. — Two crew members on a Holland America cruise ship died during an “incident” in the ship's engineering space, the cruise line said.

The unidentified crew members died Friday while the Port Everglades-based Nieuw Amsterdam was at Half Moon Cay in the Bahamas, Holland America said in a statement.

Authorities were notified and the cause of the accident is being investigated, the cruise line said. Crew members were being offered counseling.

"All of us at Holland America Line are deeply saddened by this incident and our thoughts and prayers are with our team members’ families at this difficult time," the statement said. "The safety, security and welfare of all guests and crew are the company’s absolute priority."

The cruise line did not offer any further details about the crew members. It later said the Bahamas Maritime Authority was leading the investigation. The ship set sail out of Fort Lauderdale on March 16 for a seven-night trip.

Russia-Ukraine latest: Terror group behind Moscow concert hall shooting attempted attacks in France, Macron says

Four suspects have appeared in court in Moscow after gunmen attacked a concert hall on Friday, with three pleading guilty to terror charges. The number of people killed in the Crocus City Hall shooting has risen to 137.

Three more suspects in the case of the Moscow concert attack have appeared in court.

Russian state news agency RIA Novosti reported investigators had asked for the three men to be taken into custody.

The men have been named as two brothers Dilovar Islomov and Aminchon Islomov, and their father Isroil Islomov.

Dilovar Islomav has been identified as a Russian citizen, the news outlet added.

Four suspects from Tajikistan have already been remanded in custody until at least 22 May before facing trial, Russian authorities have said.

Dalerdzhon Barotovich Mirzoyev, 32, Saidakrami Murodali Rachabalizoda, 30, Shamsidin Fariduni, 25, and Muhammadsobir Fayzov, 19, appeared at the Basmanny district court in Moscow yesterday.

Court officials said Mirzoyev and Rachabalizoda pleaded guilty to the charges.

At least 137 people were killed in the attack on the Piknik rock concert at Crocus City Hall Krasnogorsk on Friday.

A further 154 people were injured, and more than 100 remain in hospital.

By Diana Magnay , international correspondent in Russia

This morning - three days on from the horrors of the Crocus City Hall terror attack - people were still streaming to the site to lay flowers.

The makeshift memorial stretched on and on, piles of carnations beside huge bouquets of roses, brightly coloured teddy bears wedged in amongst the flowers and the occasional photograph of one of the many victims. Around the corner of the huge Crocus City complex, the burnt out remains of the concert hall stood black and ravaged against the sky.

An orthodox priest burnt incense and led a small crowd in prayers which they sang in soft, mournful tones. Many wept.

This is the worst terror attack on Russian soil since the horrors of the Beslan school siege in 2004. Then, the world of Islamist terror was more familiar than it is now. Then, Putin's attention - and that of his security forces - was fixed firmly on it, not that that helped save the children of Beslan.

"You cannot put it into words. It's horrible, it's a nightmare," one man told us. "For what? Why did they take these people?"

"Where were our authorities?" his companion said through her tears. "Where were the guards who walk the streets? We didn't see them here."

Round the back of the building, people who'd been at the concert on Friday night were returning to pick up their things, mostly overcoats left in the cloakroom as people fled.

"We heard shots, and then they got louder and louder and louder. And when I saw the staff running down the hall and behind the stage, I realized this was a terror attack," said Oleg.

"Then when we got to the first floor there were already people killed, many, many bodies. Groups of two, three, five people. When I turned to my right there were fifteen people killed there."

Oleg doesn't want to speculate on who might be responsible. "We now have a difficult situation in the country and my words might have negative consequences," he says.

Tatiana, who'd gone to the concert with her grandson, was less cautious. "I think there are some traces, since they fled to Ukraine, it means that they probably had some kind of route which means someone was waiting for them there."

It is certainly the inference Russia's president was making in his first, terse statement on Saturday evening where he intimated that the suspects were en route to Ukraine and that a "window" was prepared for them at the border.

That suggestion of a "Ukrainian trace" has fallen on fertile ground in wartime Russia where Ukraine has targeted military installations and towns and villages along the border in response to the Kremlin's devastating onslaught on their country.

But there is a considerable distance between bombing oil refineries, even dare it be said the shelling of Belgorod with the occasional loss of civilian life, and the indiscriminate slaughter of 137 civilians at a rock concert.

Plus, Islamic State-Khorasan has claimed responsibility and released footage from one of the attackers' phones as they conducted their rampage.

"‘Perhaps there was some help from Ukraine," says Natalya who lives close to the Crocus Hall complex.

"But who ordered it, who is the sponsor of this terrorist attack? I'm guessing it's the West, either the UK or the US."

I ask if she'd heard about the US intelligence warning issued to Russia on 7 March about a possible terror attack and whether that didn't change her view.

"Of course I heard about it,"  she replies. "I think that the United States is also divided into two camps: those who do not want terrorist attacks and those who sponsor it."

Former Russian president Dmitry Medvedev has called for the gunmen and anyone else involved in Friday's attack near Moscow to be killed.

The deadly attack has prompted discussions among Vladimir Putin's allies about resurrecting the death penalty, which has not been used in Russia since 1996.

In a post to Telegram after the four suspects were placed in pre-trial detention, Mr Medvedev said: "Everyone asks me. What to do? They were caught."

He continued: "Do they have to be killed? They have to be. And will be. But it is much more important to kill everyone involved. Everyone. Who paid, who sympathised, who helped. Kill them all."

Vladimir Vasilyev, parliamentary leader of the United Russia faction in the lower house of parliament, also said people in Russia were "asking questions" about the death penalty.

The Kremlin, however, said it was not taking part in such discussions (more in our 9.39 post).

Capital punishment is legal in Russia but no executions have been carried out since 1996, when it was subject to a de-facto moratorium.

Vladimir Putin has held another phone call with Tajik President Emomali Rahmon in the wake of the concert hall attack.

All four men suspected of carrying out the massacre have been identified as Tajik nationals by Russian media.

According to Russia's foreign ministry, Mr Rahmon said today there "could not be any justification" for the attack.

In a previous phone call, the Tajik president condemned the "terrorist attack" and told Mr Putin that "terrorists have no nationality, no homeland and no religion," Mr Rahmon's office said in a statement.

The two leaders noted that their security services were working "closely together" to counter terrorism and would "build up their cooperation", Russia said.

Russia's ambassador to Poland did not attend the foreign ministry in Warsaw today despite being summoned to do so.

Poland has demanded an explanation from Moscow after one of its missiles briefly entered Polish airspace during a major missile attack on Ukraine in the early hours of yesterday.

Defence minister Wladyslaw Kosiniak-Kamysz said the airspace was penetrated by around 0.6 miles to 1.2 miles as Russia was targeting the Ukrainian border region of Lviv.

Poland's deputy foreign minister said Warsaw was intending to hand a protest note to Russian ambassador Sergey Andreyev - however he did not attend the ministry today on being summoned.

A diplomatic note will be sent by another means, the foreign ministry said.

Russia has targeted Ukraine with more than 1,000 bombs, drones and missiles in the past seven days, the Ukrainian foreign ministry has said.

The ministry said 190 missiles of various types had been launched, along with 140 drones and 700 aerial bombs.

"Our sky defenders shoot down practically all targets, but even the most agile need support to defend our people from Russia's terror," it wrote in a post to X.

More pictures are coming out of Kyiv this afternoon, showing the extent of the damage from Russia's missile attack.

Ukraine said it intercepted the two ballistic missiles launched from Crimea, but the missile debris has caused significant damage - especially in the capital's Pechersk district.

In an update to our 12.38pm post, officials have now confirmed that 10 people are injured as a result of the attack.

Details are beginning to emerge of some of those killed when gunmen attacked a concert shortly before a rock band were due to take to the stage on Friday.

The attack on Crocus City Hall - the deadliest inside Russia for two decades - killed at least 137 people and injured over 150 more.

Ice hockey player Alexey Rudnitsky, 39, was among those killed, according to the finance ministry of Russia's Yaroslavl region, where he used to work.

The ministry said it was a "great shock" to learn of the death of Mr Rudnitsky, who it described as a "cheerful person" and a "true professional".

Tatyana Anatolyevna Abdulova, a vet at a clinic in Moscow and a local search and rescue volunteer, was also among the dead, her workplace said.

"We lost a colleague, friend, wonderful person and doctor," it said in a post to the Russian social media site VK.

"This is an irreparable loss and a huge pain for our entire team. We express our sincere condolences to Tatyana's family and everyone who lost a loved one in this terrible terrorist attack," it said.

Another victim has been named as 52-year-old Irina Firsova, a former professor at the Moscow State Pedagogical University.

The university's history and law faculty said students and staff were mourning Ms Firsova's "untimely" death and sent condolences to her loved ones.

Tatyana Pikhnovskaya, 51, was killed in Friday's attack, Moscow State University said.

Ms Pikhnovskaya worked in the university's management department before moving to the banking sector, and lived and worked in Moscow "for a long time", it said in a post on VK.

Four more people are confirmed to have been injured in the missile attack on Kyiv today - bringing the total number of casualties to nine so far.

Ukraine's state emergency service said the victims were all from the Pechersk district of the Ukrainian capital.

Two have been taken to hospital, and rescue work is ongoing, it said.

It marks the third Russian missile attack on Kyiv in just five days.

Two new armies announced by Russia last week are likely to suffer from "resourcing problems" despite significant recruitment efforts, the UK's Ministry of Defence has said.

Russian defence minister Sergei Shoigu announced on 20 March that the new armies, formed of 14 divisions and 16 brigades, would be formed some time in 2024.

The MoD said the units would likely comprise a mix of "mechanised, armoured, artillery and logistics".

Moscow's previous successful recruitment efforts mean it is likely the armies will be "sufficiently staffed", it said.

But despite this, the MoD said Russia's "limited training", widespread use of older equipment and infrastructure issues mean they will suffer "similar resourcing problems".

Carnival Freedom cruise ship catches fire amid bad weather conditions

Carnival Freedom Fire

The Carnival Freedom caught fire while sailing in the Bahamas on Saturday, March 23. The ship was heading to Freeport after canceling a call to Princess Cay due to bad weather conditions.

According to a release from Carnival Cruise Line, the fire broke out on the port side of the ship's exhaust funnel causing a portion of it to fall onto the deck.

Soon after the fire broke out, the captain turned the ship around toward an area with heavy rain to maximize efforts of extinguishing the flames.

The captain made several announcements to guests and crew and advised everyone to stay away from the balconies and all open decks.

No injuries to guests were reported, but two members of the firefighting crew were treated for minor smoke inhalation.

There were no operational issues with the ship's systems due to the fire, and all areas of the ship are fully functioning again, with the exception of the open decks.

No delays are expected to future voyages, and the ship plans to depart from Port Canaveral on Monday.
