Entertainment

I paid for an aisle seat and found I was bumped to the middle seat. No entertainment at all, bathroom was so tiny, a woman had a hard time in there. Seems it was considered for men only. This was my first time on Alaska airlines. I don’t think I want to fly on Alaska Airlines again.

Be careful when booking flights to New Mexico, it’s likely you’ll never want to leave the “Land of Enchantment.” New Mexico still inhabits much of Spanish and Indian heritage and travelers on New Mexico flights will quickly get caught up in the state’s rich history and culture.

Be prepared to get totally absorbed in the culture when your flight to New Mexico arrives. The Pueblo, Navajo, and Apache tribes still occupy much of the New Mexico land and many of the tribesmen still speak their native language. The Navajo Indians, the largest Native American Group in the nation, have a reservation that covers 14 million acres in New Mexico. In fact, the Native American culture is so strong in New Mexico that tribal law holds more weight than state law in some reservations. Meanwhile, in small mountain villages throughout New Mexico, the Hispanic culture remains rooted in its Spanish history.

But when you book flights to New Mexico and experience the state, you’ll realize that not all is old and ancient. Tourism still serves as a large financial boost to the New Mexico economy. Tourists booking New Mexico flights and accommodations take plenty of time to visit the ruins at Fort Union and pay their respects to Billy the Kid.

  • Late September/October is a “big” time in New Mexico. It’s when Albuquerque plays host to the world’s largest international hot air balloon festival and Las Cruces makes the world’s largest enchilada (Whole Enchilada Fiesta) – about ten feet in diameter.
  • Visit the Navajo nation – the lands span parts of Arizona, Utah and New Mexico – which includes Angel Peak Recreation Area, the home of the “sacred ones”, Chaco Culture National Historic Park, Morgan Lake, and the towns of Crownpoint, Nageezi, Nachitti, Newcomb, Shiprock, Thoreau and Tohatchi.
  • DH Lawrence’s old house is in Taos . The writer and his wife Frieda were invited to New Mexico by the heiress Mabel Dodge Luhan and given a house in the mountains. Lawrence wrote about his time there in Mornings in Mexico , a collection of travel essays.
  • No visit to the Land of Enchantment is complete without a trip to Roswell , the town where the flying saucer crashed (allegedly) in 1947. Roswell hosts a UFO festival each year with concerts, plays, parades, a fly-over event called Alien Invasion and planetarium show.

What is the climate like in New Mexico?

The rainy season is July through early September. Santa Fe and Taos, at 7,000 feet, have midsummer highs in the low 90s (F). Albuquerque, at 5,300 feet, is about 10 degrees warmer. Summers in the plains and deserts usually exceed 100 degrees. Winter days in Santa Fe and Taos can be in the 50s, and some snow falls but melts quickly. The lower Rio Grande Valley gets under 2 inches of snow; the ski resorts receive up to 300. Spring and fall are mild.

When is the best time to fly to New Mexico?

Peak Season: Summer is the high season and when most people book New Mexico flights and hotel rooms. The Santa Fe cultural season and Indian and Spanish markets are in full swing July and August. The Taos Pueblo Powwow is also in July and the Taos Arts Festival in September. The Albuquerque International Balloon Fiesta is in October. Most Native American ceremonial dances that are open to the public are held in summer, early fall, Christmas, and Easter. Thanksgiving through March, skiers flock to the mountains. Off Season: Spring is a mild, but windy, time to visit. October has the best weather and changing colors of mountain foliage. Late fall and winter are mild and cool in the desert regions. Winter, away from the mountains, is a good time for bird watching.

What is the best way to travel around New Mexico?

Regional airlines have scheduled New Mexico flights to in-state destinations. There is limited bus service, and trains traverse the state in the north and southwest. The best way to get around New Mexico is with a car. Before setting out, make sure the vehicle is in good condition. If it breaks down in a remote area, you can be stranded for quite a while. July through early September is the rainy season, and warnings about flash floods in arroyos are serious—vehicles can be washed away. Indian reservations and pueblos have their own customs and laws, including driving laws. Check with the visitor centers for full details. Driving around Albuquerque is not difficult except for the local drivers. Pay attention as they tend to spontaneously turn and rush through yellow lights. Parking is very difficult around the University of New Mexico. Buses service the metropolitan area and taxis are available. The Santa Fe and Taos Plazas are easily explored on foot, and both have bus routes to the outer reaches. Santa Fe cabs are not metered (they charge a flat fee based on distance), and Taos has limited taxi service. During peak seasons, parking in both cities is hard to come by.

How Much Does it Cost to Visit Santa Fe, New Mexico? Our Santa Fe Trip Budget Breakdown

How Much Does it Cost to Visit Santa Fe, New Mexico Our Santa Fe Trip Budget Breakdown by Stephanie Craig

Last Updated on: 19th June 2023, 07:17 pm

We just got back from our most recent New Mexico adventure which was a one-week trip to Santa Fe.

Here is exactly what our Santa Fe trip cost , plus tips for helping you create your own Santa Fe trip budget.

Stephanie Craig at The Big Texan Steak Ranch in Amarillo, Texas between OKC and Santa Fe New Mexico

Since we live in Oklahoma , Santa Fe is an easy (for us) eight-hour car ride away.

Seeing how inexpensive our trip was, I’m very excited to plan many more trips to the “City Different” for a mix of Spanish Colonial and Puebloan history, adobe architecture, and southwestern flavors.

How Much We Spent in Santa Fe: Our Santa Fe Trip Budget Breakdown

Here’s exactly how we spent our money in Santa Fe for one week. Below I go into more detail about each category.

Accommodations: $1008*

Attractions: $151

Dining: $917.88

Miscellaneous: $26.93

Souvenirs & Gifts: $196.19

Transportation: $236.17

Our Total Santa Fe Trip Cost: $2536.17

*We used credit card points from our Marriott Bonvoy Amex to book our hotel room for free, but this is the price the room would have been if we had paid for it.

Santa Fe Budget Per Person

Our total trip cost was $2536.17.

Since our youngest is a baby, she accounted for very little of our overall trip budget. Our oldest is currently three years old, so his food costs were less than the adults and he was only charged for some of the attractions.

Our Santa Fe Trip Budget for Our Family of Four

However, there are other times when having them with us resulted in higher costs, if only indirectly, as we needed a comfier, safer hotel room and paid for more convenience since traveling with two small children is tiring.

For budget purposes, I would count our trip as 2.5 people, making the cost of our trip to Santa Fe $1014.47 per person.

Accommodations Cost + Tips

As I mentioned earlier, we used Marriott Bonvoy Amex points to book our room for free. However, this would have cost $1008 if we had paid in cash.

We stayed at the Marriott Courtyard Santa Fe on Cerrillos Road. This is a 3-star hotel. The price is one which I consider mid-range, so your budget will be different than ours if you want a luxury hotel, a bed & breakfast, or a budget Santa Fe hotel.

Our room at the Courtyard Marriott on Cerrillos Road in Santa Fe New Mexico

What I liked about our hotel – other than it was free – was that check-in at the front desk was easy, the hotel amenities like an indoor pool were nice, and housekeeping did a fantastic job on our very messy room.

If you’d prefer a different hotel style, here are other popular Santa Fe hotels. Click to check average prices and availability or to book now:

Guadalupe Inn (Mid-Range)

Drury Plaza Hotel (Luxury)

Eldorado Hotel (Luxury)

Four Seasons (Luxury)

Note that some hotels offer amenities like free wifi, free breakfast, and free parking. If yours does not, add those costs to your accommodations budget.

You also need to pay attention to whether your hotel is in the city center or on the outskirts of the city. This will affect your transportation budget. More on that later.

Another option when traveling in the southwest is to get an RV rental and camp.

There are many places that allow RV camping near Santa Fe, and this is a great way to enjoy a larger southwestern road trip.

The El Ray Court Motel in Santa Fe New Mexico

Good to know: When I don’t use credit card points for travel, I look for Santa Fe vacation packages, hotel deals, and vacation rentals on Booking.com .

Attraction Costs + Tips

We spent $151 on attractions. I’m shocked our attraction budget was this low. I felt like I was always swiping my card for tickets.

Travel Writer Stephanie Craig visiting the IAIA Museum of Contemporary Native Arts in Santa Fe New Mexico

Santa Fe is a museum-heavy place to visit. We went to four museums in the city, and some of the ticket prices for each museum are on the high side. For example, the Georgia O’Keefe Museum is $20 per person.

In Santa Fe, we spent money at these attractions:

Georgia O’Keeffe Museum: $40

IAIA Museum of Contemporary Native Arts: $20

Loretto Chapel: $10

New Mexico Museum of Art (1 adult): $12

Santa Fe Children’s Museum (2 adults and 1 child): $27

There is also a lot of free sightseeing in Santa Fe. For example, the Oldest House Museum and the San Miguel Chapel, two of the most popular things to do in the city, are both free, as are visits to the Santa Fe River parks and the Japanese American Internment Memorial.

Travel Writer Stephanie Craig visiting the New Mexico Museum of Art in Santa Fe New Mexico

We also spent money on attractions during day trips to Albuquerque, Los Alamos, and Taos. These cities also offer a good mix of must-see paid attractions and free things to do.

There is one big attraction that I wanted to do but ultimately skipped due to price: riding the Sky Railway in the Santa Fe Railyard. This scenic train ride looks fabulous (we did something similar in Alamosa, Colorado).

But ultimately, I couldn’t bring myself to spend $409 for our family to go on this special adventure – especially when our three-year-old would cost the same as a full adult. Maybe next time!

Travel-Writer-Stephanie-Craig-visiting-the-San-Miguel-Mission-in-Santa-Fe-New-Mexico

Other Santa Fe attractions that we put on our list for our next trip are a stop at the New Mexico History Museum, a local walking tour, and a performance at the Santa Fe Opera or Lensic Performing Arts Center.

I’d also love to come to town for the Fiesta de Santa Fe or another annual festival.

Dining Costs + Tips

At $917.88 , food was our second biggest trip cost. We didn’t scrimp too much when it comes to dining – that’s because the food in New Mexico is just too good!

We had one big meal per day, usually around lunchtime. We had a few nice dinners mixed in with nights of eating leftovers from lunch. We bought groceries for our hotel room for breakfast and snacks to have with us during the day.

Beer from Bosque Brewery at Restoration Pizza at the Santa Fe Railyard in Santa Fe New Mexico by Stephanie Craig

Our final per-person food costs in Santa Fe were $367.15 , or $45.89 per person per day.

We focused on eating at local restaurants that specialized in New Mexican or Native American cuisine. Some of our favorite places to eat in Santa Fe include the Plaza Cafe, Restoration Pizza, and the Tea House.

Green Chile Ice Cream at La Lecheria in the Santa Fe Railyard in New Mexico

Make sure you try local favorites like posole, margaritas, and green chile.

I included breweries and wineries in our food budget. If you consider these to be attractions, I’ll mention that we spent about $30 for one wine and one beer tasting for two adults.

Gear Costs + Tips

We didn’t need any new gear for this trip. I had already purchased a travel crib for the baby for a separate trip, so using it again was a bonus.

Road Trip Luggage in Santa Fe New Mexico by Stephanie Craig

We have all of our road trip gear pretty fine-tuned since we’ve done 40k miles of road trips all over North America in the past two years.

However, for your trip budget, make sure to add in any gear you might need, like a cargo roof carrier or a new day bag.

Southwest USA Guidebook in Albuquerque New Mexico

One piece of gear I get for every trip is a guidebook. I already had my Lonely Planet Southwest USA and Route 66 guide , so I didn’t have to get new ones. However, you might consider grabbing one or both.

Miscellaneous Costs + Tips

I always put $100 in the budget for miscellaneous problems and unexpected costs, and I’m always happy when it comes out to be less than that.

Of course, if you have a road emergency with no travel insurance , you could have a much bigger expense here.

Travel Writer Stephanie Craig Walking around in Santa Fe New Mexico

During this trip, we were fortunate that the only major unforeseen issue was that we went to Albuquerque on a day trip and forgot our phone charger. Getting a replacement cost $26.93.

Pro tip: Get a travel insurance quote for your trip.

Souvenirs & Gifts Costs + Tips

We spent $196.19 on souvenirs and gifts, which was more than I expected.

If I’m being honest, I usually budget between $50-100 for souvenirs. We have a souvenir refrigerator magnet collection that I’m kind of obsessed with, plus we like to buy a gift for anyone who’s helped us out with our trip.

However, shopping in Santa Fe is just too much fun. Between the art galleries and the cool museum and brewery swag, I spent almost twice what I expected.

Art Gallery in Santa Fe New Mexico by Stephanie Craig

The $197 included a refrigerator magnet, jewelry for my mother and sister who helped us with the trip by watching our dog and taking care of our place, two t-shirts, a sweatshirt, and a plastic stegosaurus.

I was very, very disciplined and didn’t come home with an entire art gallery or collection of pottery – but I know I’ll be back!

When making your own Santa Fe souvenir budget, keep in mind that the town is the home of George RR Martin, so there are some cool first edition, signed books, and other Game of Thrones swag available.

George RR Martin Portrain at Beastly Books in Santa Fe New Mexico by Stephanie Craig

There are also one billion art galleries in the arts district on Canyon Road to explore that specialize in everything from folk art to high-end painting, plus a ton of fun merchandise at the art and history museums.

That doesn’t even get into the beautiful jewelry for sale at the Palace of the Governors on Santa Fe Plaza, the fun southwestern clothing stores all around downtown Santa Fe, or the weekend Artisans Market.

To sum it up, I’m a saint for spending only $200 on souvenirs.

Transportation Costs + Tips

We went to Santa Fe as a road trip from Oklahoma City, but how you get there will determine a big portion of your transportation costs.

Ours can be broken down as:

Gas: $207.92

Parking: $28.25

Total: $236.17

This doesn’t account for things like wear and tear on the car, car insurance costs, or even the $100 oil change we needed before leaving for the trip.

Driving the Turquoise Trail from Santa Fe to Albuquerque New Mexico by Stephanie Craig

But even with those hidden costs, I still prefer to road trip almost every time. Especially now that my son doesn’t qualify for a free lap seat airline ticket.

If you are coming from farther away, your transportation budget might need to be higher.

Travel Writer Stephanie Craig visiting Ethyl the Whale in Santa Fe New Mexico

In addition to gas and parking, you will need to budget for these categories if you are flying:

Round-Trip Airfare (this will vary wildly depending on if you fly economy or first-class)

Baggage Fees

Car Rental ( Get a car rental quote through Discover Cars )

Public Transportation (Airport Pick-Up, Ubers, Taxis, and Buses)

Note that if you are flying, you will most likely need to book a flight to Santa Fe Municipal Airport (SAF) or Albuquerque International Sunport (ABQ).

If you come from Albuquerque, you will want to pick up a rental car at the airport to drive to Santa Fe.

Driving the Turquoise Trail from Albuquerque to Santa Fe New Mexico by Stephanie Craig

Even if you are flying into Santa Fe, I highly recommend getting a rental car unless you plan to stay downtown and only see attractions within walking distance.

6 Tips to Save Money in Santa Fe

First, look for free attractions as well as discounts. Walking around the city center, visiting the Cross of the Martyrs, and stopping by many of the city’s important churches are all free activities.

Second, for discounted activities, if you will be visiting at least three of the four included Santa Fe sites, a New Mexico Culture Pass will save you money.

Third, we saved money on gas by using our Sam’s Club/Walmart + membership to access gas discounts at the Sam’s Club Fuel Center.

Fourth, we also saved money on food by doing a Walmart grocery order so we had groceries in our hotel room for breakfast and snacks.

Fifth, if you plan on going to multiple national parks and monuments during your time in New Mexico, check out my tips for using the America the Beautiful National Parks Pass.

Colorado - Black Canyon of the Gunnison National Park - America the Beautiful Annual Pass in front of Canyon

Finally, if you want to go shopping in Santa Fe for art and handmade souvenirs, but find gallery prices to be untenable for you, check out the Artisans Market on Sundays.

Frequently Asked Questions about Santa Fe Trip Costs and Budgets (FAQ)

Here are the things travelers ask the most often about creating a budget for a trip to Sana Fe.

Is Santa Fe expensive to visit?

Santa Fe can be pricey, but it doesn’t have to be. You can find nice budget and mid-range alternatives for most budgeting categories.

How much does it cost to visit Santa Fe?

We spent $1014.47 per person for a week in Santa Fe. See above for our budget breakdown and how this budget can be more or less expensive.

Travel Writer Stephanie Craig at the Inn & Spa at Loretto in Santa Fe New Mexico

How many days should I spend in Santa Fe?

We spent seven days in Santa Fe, but only three days were spent in the city itself. We also spent three days exploring other parts of New Mexico on day trips.

Three days was a great amount of time to appreciate the city’s attractions on a weekend getaway.

Is Santa Fe more expensive than Albuquerque?

We spent more money in Santa Fe than in Albuquerque. There were more incidental expenses like parking in Santa Fe. However, they are comparatively priced vacation destinations.

Stephanie Craig at the San Felipe de Neri in Albuquerque New Mexico

How much does it cost for transportation to Santa Fe?

We spent $236.17 on transportation, which included gas and parking. We didn’t fly, but if you will be flying and renting a car, these will be extra expenses.

Where are the best places to see in Santa Fe?

We loved exploring Old Santa Fe, including the San Miguel Chapel, the Palace of the Governors, and the IAIA Museum of Contemporary Native Arts.

We also loved the Jean Cocteau Cinema, the Santa Fe Railyard, and nearby places like Camel Rock.

Travel Writer Stephanie Craig at the Santa Fe Railyard in Santa Fe New Mexico

What are the most popular things to do in Santa Fe?

The most popular things to do in Santa Fe are located in the city center, including the Palace of the Governors, the Georgia O’Keefe Museum, Santa Fe Plaza, the New Mexico Museum of Art, and the Cathedral Basilica of Saint Francis of Assisi.

Travel Writer Stephanie Craig at the Inn & Spa at Loretto in Santa Fe, New Mexico

How much should I budget for my trip to Santa Fe?

This depends on how far away you are and your budget style. If you are flying from New York or Washington D.C., your trip costs will be higher than someone driving in from Phoenix or Oklahoma City.

We spent $1014.47 per person for an eight-day/seven-night Santa Fe vacation. This is $126.80 per day.

This cost per day would be more if we were coming for a shorter amount of time or needed to add plane tickets or a rental car to our budget.

5 Things to Bring to New Mexico

My luggage on a bench in Taos New Mexico by Stephanie Craig

Along with the  Lonely Planet Southwest USA ,  make sure to bring the following:

A Packable Down Jacket –  everyone in our family has one. They’re light and easy to keep in your backpack or car, but they’re warm enough to make a huge difference if the weather turns cold.

I have this  women’s version .  I loved having it with me in the Southwest. It comes in handy from September through May. My husband has this  men’s version.  Our son just outgrew this  child’s version.

A Lightweight but Durable Backpack  – My  Venture Pal 40L Lightweight Packable Daypack  was a steal for the price. It’s survived 17 national parks as well as trips to Mexico and El Salvador!

My VentureL Day Pack in Santa Fe, New Mexico

It won’t last forever, but it has more than proved its worth so far.

See the Venture Pal 40L Lightweight Packable Daypack on Amazon

A Pair of Binoculars  for trips where I’m going to be looking for wildlife. I use  these binoculars,  and my husband has a separate pair.

A Portable Charging Bank  in case my phone dies. Having a  portable charger  for your phone is crucial, especially in a state like New Mexico where the signal comes and goes, draining your battery.

This is a safety issue as my offline maps may be the only way to navigate where there’s no cell phone data available, as well as the convenience of being able to use my cell phone camera.

A Basic First Aid Kit  to handle minor issues while you are out. Don’t let a hot spot on your foot turn into a blister, or leave a small cut open to the elements.

I keep a  small first aid kit  in my backpack at all times when we are on the road.

Other items to consider:  a personal breathalyzer since New Mexico is a driving-heavy destination with great breweries and wineries, a  pocket knife for small emergencies ,  a bathing suit for water sports, and a  water bottle with a filter if you’ll be out hiking or in nature.

For Your Trip to New Mexico – Don’t Forget About Travel Insurance!

Whenever I go on a trip, I always make sure to get  travel insurance!

This is especially true whenever I explore big cities (and their inherent crowds) and the beautiful (but sometimes dangerous) outdoors – so two things I always do in New Mexico!

The company  Safety Wing   is the travel insurance company I always look to first, and I happily recommend them!

It makes my life easier knowing if something should happen, I’ll be able to take care of it!

ROUTE 66: THE Mother Road

In its heyday, all 465 miles of New Mexico's Route 66 bustled with life and played home to some of the most iconic experiences of the American West: herds of antelope on the high prairie, dramatic mountain vistas, and the tribal cultures of New Mexico's native Puebloan people. Today, travelers can still take in the nostalgia of the Mother Road, neon signs and all.

Summer’s arrival cues the call of the open road, high time for loading up the car and taking in as much of the state as the windshield allows. Choose a route geared toward heart-pumping adventure, or aim your tires toward culinary icons. Walk the streets of some of the nation’s oldest villages, still home to Native American communities, or ferret out the lingering neon and curios from heyday of scenic byways. These road trips through the Land of Enchantment will mandate keeping a camera, curiosity, and a sense of adventure close at hand.

Scenic byways run throughout the charming small towns of New Mexico.

New Mexico Scenic Byways.

In fact, eight of the 126 America's Byways are right here in our state. The America's Byways Program is part of the U.S. Department of Transportation, Federal Highway Administration, and was established to help recognize, preserve and enhance selected roads throughout the states. The U.S. Secretary of Transportation recognizes these designated roads based on one or more intrinsic qualities — archaeological, cultural, historic, natural, recreational, or scenic. You don’t have to take their word for it. We’ll let you be the judge. Come see each unique scenic byway for yourself. Click on the images to view a map and video.

Ghost Towns

Most were mining towns, where men lusted after the earth’s riches – gold, silver, turquoise, copper, lead and coal. A few were farming communities that flourished for a time and mysteriously fell silent. Literally hundreds of towns not only died, they vanished.

It should be no surprise that New Mexico claims the invention of the Breakfast Burrito. It is the wrapped wonder that brings spice to the morning. It is now a staple on menus across the Southwest, and showing up frequently on menus nationwide. New Mexico, also known as the “Land of Enchantment”, is an underrated state for travel. The state has so much to offer, including gorgeous natural sights, rich Pueblo heritage, a vibrant arts scene, incredible food, and adventure.

The top highlights of the state — White Sands, Santa Fe, and Albuquerque — are a bit far apart, but the journey and the fascinating stops along the way are worth making it a road trip.

This itinerary is about ten hours of driving time total and the locations are divided into stints no more than two hours apart.

I made all of these stops in six days, but I recommend that you enjoy the state at a slower pace if you can!

Since I was limited on time, I moved through the trip quickly and spent a lot of time in the car driving from place to place. I also recommend flying into El Paso and out of Albuquerque to save yourself the hassle and time of needing to double back.

You’ll have to take your own travel preferences into consideration when deciding where to spend an overnight. At minimum, I recommend an overnight stay in Almorgado after visiting White Sands National Park and two nights in Santa Fe.

P.S. Don’t expect traffic on this road trip! Much of the journey happens on quieter roads. So pack up your road trip essentials , get comfortable, and let’s go on a New Mexico road trip!

Day-by-Day New Mexico Road Trip Itinerary

Below you’ll find a 6-day itinerary for a New Mexico road trip with the perfect mix of unique towns, outdoor actvities and beautiful landscapes. At the end I share some additional stops if you’d like to extend your trip.

White Sands National Park landscape shot

Day 1: El Paso, Texas – Las Cruces – White Sands National Park

  • Distance: 105 miles
  • Drive time: 2 hours

This New Mexico road trip itinerary begins in Texas, actually. El Paso International Airport is the closest airport to southern New Mexico , which means it’s the closest major airport to White Sands National Park. Rent a car from the airport terminal, and head north to start your adventure!

Before embarking on my journey, I stopped briefly to experience the El Paso Scenic Drive and Overlook . This overlook provided magnificent sights from atop the city. You can even see the United States-Mexico border. If you’re short on time, you can skip this stop.

El Paso Scenic Overlook from the top of the stairs

Depending on the time of day you arrive, you may decide to spend your first night in El Paso or Las Cruces, about an hour from the airport. Since I arrived in the morning, I left El Paso and continued my journey after Las Cruces.

Tip:  Before you depart on your New Mexico road trip, fill up your gas tank (and fill up often!). You’ll often be driving along long stretches of roads with no services.

  • Travel distance: 1 hour (52 miles) from El Paso

La Cruces will be your first stop on this New Mexico road trip itinerary, and is a great place to stretch your legs, grab a bite, and recharge before your second leg of the drive.

In Las Cruces, there’s tons of restaurant options. Andele’s is a lively, Mexican cantina that serves Mexican Hot Dogs. For a vegan-friendly spot, hit up Habaneros Fresh Mex .

If you’re looking to sneak a quick hike in right off the bat, drive 25 minutes east of La Cruces to the Organ Mountains. Here you’ll find a variety of trails anywhere from two to seven miles long.

I recommend the Dripping Springs Trail (3 miles) for a taste of the area. This gravel trail is rated as moderate, starting at the Visitors Center and leading to a small seasonal waterfall.

If you do decide to hike in the Organ Mountains, it might be worth finding a hotel in La Cruces for the night so you aren’t rushed when you get to White Sands National Monument. Alternatively, if you are short on time, I’d suggest passing through Las Cruces quickly so you can spend more time at White Sands.

White Sands National Park

  • Travel distance: 1 hour (53 miles) from Las Cruces

Once you’re done in La Cruces, continue onto White Sands National Monument , which will undoubtedly be a highlight of your New Mexico road trip. As of August 2023, entry is $25 per private vehicle.

Purchasing an America the Beautiful Annual Pass($80) will save some money if you visit 3 or more federal sites in the upcoming year. Bandelier Monument, mentioned later in this itinerary, is also part of the pass program.

White Sands is especially gorgeous at sunrise and sunset . Stop by the Visitor’s Center for an orientation film, exhibits, and a restroom break. Then, continue on to see more of the park. Depending on the time of year, mid-day in this area can be very hot, so be sure to have plenty of water and sun protection .

I opted to walk the Interdune Boardwalk , an easy .4 mile, 20-minute walk. This boardwalk is fully accessible for wheelchairs and strollers and offers a shaded area about mid-way through.

White Sands National Monument interdune boardwalk trail

White Sands offers many more trails for exploration that allow you to experience the sand stretching as far as the eye can see. The Alkali Flat or the White Sands Backcountry Trail are good options for getting off the beaten path.

White Sands is an amazing place to watch the sunset. To make the most of your time, I highly recommend hiking up to the top of a towering dune in time for golden hour. On a clear day, you can expect vibrant, colorful sunsets that light up the sky in the prettiest of pastels. Bring a headlamp and stay for the blue hour after the sun goes down for the full range of colors.

Where to Stay Near White Sands National Park

Once the sun sets, continue into the town of Alamogordo , only fifteen minutes away. If you’re at White Sands for sunset, prepare to drive in complete darkness (except for the other cars also headed to town).

In Alamogordo, you’ll find lower-budget accommodations from top chains, as well as bed-and-breakfast-style hotels, motels, and Airbnbs.

I stayed at the Classic Desert Aire Hotel , a three-star accommodation offering the most delicious homemade breakfast that was included in the room rate.

Day 2: Roswell – Route 66

  • Distance: 253 miles
  • Drive time: 4 hours
  • Travel distance: 2 hours (119 miles) from Alamogordo

In the morning, continue your drive toward Roswell , a kitschy town known for all things aliens, after a rumored UFO crash in 1947. The entire town is decked out in all-green alien figures on banners, signs, and merchandise. Even the McDonald’s is shaped like a UFO.

The International UFO Museum and Research Center is a fascinating stop on this New Mexico road trip itinerary. The museum was founded to inform the public about what has become known as the “Roswell Incident.” It showcases a collection of written content around the alleged alien sightings, as well as replicas of aliens. With admission at only $7, don’t miss it.

Before you depart Roswell, be sure to fill up on gas for the next stretch of highway.

Route 66 (Santa Rosa)

  • Travel distance: 2 hours (134 miles) from Roswell

After your stint in Roswell, drive north to meet the famous Route 66. The Route 66 Auto Museum and the Blue Hole are the main attractions in Santa Rosa.

The auto museum showcases over 30 vintage vehicles, plus Route 66 memorabilia, like records and Coca-Cola signs. The museum also has a souvenir shop where you can purchase some neat items for family back home. It’s worth a stop for any traveler, car enthusiast or not. Admission is $5.

If cars aren’t your thing, stop by the Blue Hole, an 80-foot deep crystal-blue natural swimming hole that’s perfect for a dip. You can even SCUBA dive here for a one-of-a-kind experience.

Days 3-4: Santa Fe

  • Travel distance: 1.5 hours (108 miles) from Santa Rosa

Head north again and arrive in Santa Fe , the cultural center of New Mexico. This charming city is known as a hotbed for creative arts, with a mix of high-end and lower-priced art galleries, textile shops, pottery shops, and much more located on every block. For that reason, it’s worth spending a couple of days in Santa Fe . Most visitors stay in the Old Town, the heart of the city.

Santa Fe was founded as a Spanish colony in 1610 and still features authentic Pueblo-style architecture. The Palace of the Governors, now the New Mexico History Museum , sits at the heart of the downtown area. This area is very walkable and houses many hotels, stores, galleries, eateries, and just about anything else you may need.

Storefronts in Old Town Santa Fe

If you’re into art or want a unique Santa Fe experience, check out the immersive art museum, Meow Wolf . The Georgia O’Keefe Museum is also a great place to visit for art lovers.

Santa Fe also has an incredible food scene. Local favorites include chili, burritos, and posole, a traditional Mexican comfort stew, usually consisting of simmered pork shoulder (check out La Choza for a vegan version). If you visit on a Saturday, the Farmers Market (which takes place year round) shouldn’t be missed. It’s a great place to pick up some peppers to take home with you.

Santa Fe also has great summer and shoulder season hiking. The Santa Fe National Forest offers dozens of trails in the Southern Rockies that are less than an hour from Sante Fe. The mountains in this region are surprisingly big, with some peaks reaching 13,000 feet in elevation.

trip to new mexico cost

While I didn’t have time to explore these mountains, the Nambe Lake is one that’s on my list. It’s a 6.3 mile hike that leaves from the base of the Santa Fe Ski Area ending at a beaufitul alpine lake, reminiscent of something you’d see in Colorado.

If you have extra time, Sante Fe is a good jumping off point to Jemez Hot Springs, where you can find plentiful New Mexico hot springs to soak in. Alternatively, it’s an easy day trip up to hike to Taos or Bandelier National Monument (which I’ll talk about below).

Where to Stay in Santa Fe

With its vibrant arts scene, Santa Fe attracts two million visitors each year. There is no shortage of luxurious, spa-like places to stay. Check out Eldorado , a centrally-located four-star hotel with a gorgeous rooftop infinity pool. Book a balcony room with a fireplace to enjoy both the sunny days and the chilly evenings.

landscape shot of Bandelier National Monument

Day 5: Bandelier National Monument

  • Travel distance: 50 minutes (41 miles) from Santa Fe

For a lovely day trip outside of Santa Fe, drive about 50 minutes northwest to Bandelier National Monument . This federal recreation land protects 33,000 acres of canyons and mesas and is the ancestral lands of 23 different Native American tribes. Visitors can see petroglyphs, caves, and carvings on the rock cliffs, and standing masonry walls from human civilization dating back over 11,000 years.

Most visitors will explore the Main (Pueblo) Loop Trail , a 1.4 mile loop trail that begins at the Visitors Center and continues through excavated archeological sites on the floor of Frijoles Canyon. You can explore the trail on your own or as part of a Ranger Guided walk, offered most days in the summer.

The 3-mile roundtrip Falls Trail , which leads to the breathtaking Upper Falls, is another popular trail. The site also offers 70 miles total of various pathways.

Entrance for a private vehicle costs $25, or is covered by the America the Beautiful annual park pass .

Dozens of hot air balloons in the sky during Albuquerque International Balloon Fiesta at sunrise

Day 6: Albuquerque

  • Travel distance: 1 hour (65 miles) from Santa Fe

Your final destination on this road trip is Albuquerque , New Mexico’s largest city. Albuquerque is most known for the International Balloon Fiesta , which occurs annually in October.

Stroll down the Biopark where you can enjoy vast greenspace (note the Biopark is not dog-friendly). The Biopark’s Botanical Gardens features 32 acres of exhibits, featuring local plants and flora from around the world.

The biopark also has a zoo, home to over 900 animals. Get a combo ticket to enjoy the entire park. It’s $22 for non-residents ($16 New Mexico resident). Seniors and youth get discounted pricing.

Much like Santa Fe, there is a rich handcrafted arts scene, with many shops selling Native American pieces. The Old Town area is very walkable to hotels, restaurants, museums, stores, and public parks.

Old Town Albuquerque dates back to 1706 when the city was a Spanish colony. Visitors can find many historic buildings, like San Felipe de Neri Church , numerous museums, and inspired hotels.

San Felipe de Neri Church

For cheap, scrumptious eats, take a break at Sawmill Market . This modern food hall offers 25+ eateries, and includes something for everyone. Diners can enjoy burgers, burritos, pasta, waffles, pizza, sushi, vegan options and more. Several bars (21+) anchor the hall, making this a popular after-work spot for locals. Check out Cashos for delicious empanadas.

Where to Stay in Albuquerque

If you’re flying out of the Albuquerque International Airport, stay at the Airport Marriott Courtyard or another hotel in that immediate area.

If you prefer to return to El Paso on your final day, it’s an additional 250 miles of driving (~4 hours).

If you have more time…

If 6-days isn’t enough and you have extra time to explore, here are a couple of add-ons to this New Mexico itinerary:

  • Stop in Taos before going to Sante Fe : a town bordering the Sangre de Cristo Mountains that is rich in indigenous history with hiking, skiing, and other outdoor activities
  • After leaving Sante Fe, spend a day in Jemez Springs soaking a New Mexico’s natural hot springs

Best Time to Visit New Mexico

Summer is the most popular time to visit New Mexico. Temperatures in Sante Fe typically reach the mid-80s, thanks to it being 7,000 feet above sea level. However, White Sands National Monument which is lower around 4,000 feet is much hotter with the highs in the mid-90s and no shade.

For the best all-around weather at all of the destinations in this New Mexico itinerary, I’d suggest visiting in spring or fall. You’ll have mild temperatures both in Sante Fe and White Sands, along with fewer crowds. Just make sure to pack layers for hiking and be prepared for noticeable temperature swings between day and night.

18 Best Places to Visit in New Mexico, According to Locals

Come to see historic small towns, scenic hiking trails, the "Grand Canyon of New Mexico," and more.

For a true taste of the American Southwest, consider a trip to New Mexico. Spanning approximately 121,000 square miles, the state is famous for its rich Indigenous history, vast landscapes (from towering dunes to subterranean caves), amazing archaeological sites, national landmarks (cliff dwellings, well-preserved adobe buildings, and centuries-old churches, to name a few), and an incredible arts and culture scene. It’s no surprise, then, that New Mexico is nicknamed the Land of Enchantment.

To narrow down the state’s best attractions, we reached out to local experts for their top recommendations. Without further ado, here are the best places to visit in New Mexico, from sprawling national parks to tiny towns and everything in between.

White Sands National Park

Spanning 275 square miles, White Sands National Park is the world’s largest gypsum dune field, and it looks and feels like an entirely different planet . The wave-like, powder-white sand dunes resemble mounds of snow, and visitors can hike or sled down them any time of year. It’s also worth noting the park is home to a handful of white-hued animals — which have changed to a lighter color over time to adapt to the environment — including mice, lizards, crickets, spiders, and moths.

Couse-Sharp Historic Site

Angelisa Murray, CEO of guided tour operator Heritage Inspirations in Taos, describes the Couse-Sharp Historic Site as a “true gem” and “one of [her] favorite museums.” Here, you’ll find the former homes and art studios of Taos Society of Artists (TSA) founding members Joseph Sharp and E.I. Couse. “Our guests can see the actual moccasins and pottery that Couse painted in his paintings ... and journey back in time to get a real feel of Taos in the early 1900s,” says Murray.

“ Abiquiú is one of my favorite small towns to take our guests,” says Murray. The town, which was settled by the Spanish in the mid-18th century, looks and feels like it was plucked out of a classic Western, and visitors may even recognize it from fan-favorite flicks like Indiana Jones . However, it’s also famous for being the home of renowned American artist Georgia O'Keeffe. Don’t leave without visiting the O’Keeffe Home and Studio and Ghost Ranch (the artist’s summer home, about 20 minutes northwest). Murray also recommends popping into the state’s first general store, Bodes , which “offers an otherworldly experience for the intrepid traveler,” according to Murray.

Bandelier National Monument

Known for its magnificent mesas, canyons, and ancestral Pueblo dwellings, this national monument spans more than 33,000 acres of rugged landscape, making it a must-visit for history buffs and nature lovers alike. The 1.4-mile Pueblo Loop Trail winds through various archaeological sites and is a popular hike. If you’re looking for more thrills, hop on one of the ladders along the route to climb into small human-carved alcoves. Alternatively, experienced hikers may opt to tackle the challenging Frijoles Canyon and Rim Trail (eight miles one way). Keep in mind those who wish to visit Frijoles Canyon and the Pueblo Loop Trail will be required to take a shuttle, which runs from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. daily (mid-June through mid-October).

Indian Pueblo Cultural Center

For a first-hand look at Pueblo culture, head to the Indian Pueblo Cultural Center in Albuquerque. Spanning more than 80 acres, the center is owned and operated by the 19 Pueblos of New Mexico. On-site offerings include a museum, exhibition galleries, murals from Pueblo artists, and the Indian Pueblo Kitchen , which serves freshly prepared Native American cuisine. Don’t leave without stocking up on some souvenirs, including Native American artwork and a wide selection of traditional and contemporary crafts, jewelry, pottery, rugs, and more. Pro tip: Check the events calendar for a schedule of the latest programming.

Santuario de Chimayo

Marama Nengel, chef concierge at Bishop’s Lodge, Auberge Resorts Collection , recommends taking an afternoon trip to Santuario de Chimayó , about 27 miles from Santa Fe. According to Nengel, thousands visit this picturesque adobe church — now a National Historic Landmark — each year. It’s best known for its holy dirt, which is believed to have healing properties. Per Nengel, no trip here is complete without a visit to the Centinela Traditional Arts gallery to see eight generations of Trujillo weavers. Finally, when hunger calls, tuck into some Southwestern fare at Rancho de Chimayó .

Puye Cliff Dwellings

Located in Los Alamos, this National Historic Landmark was once home to 1,500 Pueblo Indians. It’s no surprise, then, that the site boasts some stunning Pueblo architecture and well-preserved cliff and cave dwellings. The panoramic valley views are an incredible added bonus. It’s worth noting that guided tours are available Monday to Thursday between 9 a.m. and 5 p.m.

Santa Fe Plaza

Santa Fe Plaza is both a beloved tourist attraction and a popular gathering place for locals. This National Historic Landmark, established by the Spanish in the early 17th century, is renowned for its Spanish Pueblo architecture. The bustling location hosts a slew of events throughout the year, including the Traditional Spanish Market in the summer months. Come holiday season, the square gets decked out in twinkling lights, making it even more magical. In recent years, the area surrounding the Plaza has evolved into a buzzy hot spot with dozens of eclectic restaurants, shops, museums, and hotels.

El Rancho de Las Golondrinas

El Rancho de Las Golondrinas (“The Ranch of the Swallows”) is a historic ranch-turned-living history museum near downtown Santa Fe, though its rural surroundings make it feel worlds away, What’s more, a visit to this 200-acre site, which is dotted with striking adobe buildings, feels like a step back in time to New Mexico in the 1800s. In the 18th and 19th centuries, the ranch served as an official rest stop for travelers on El Camino Real, which stretched from Mexico City to Santa Fe. Note the site is closed for general admission between November and March.

Turquoise Trail National Scenic Byway

The 65-mile Turquoise Trail National Scenic Byway — named for the precious stone the Pueblo mined here centuries earlier — links Santa Fe and Albuquerque. As such, it makes for an excellent day trip from either city. The historic route winds through old mining and ghost towns such as Madrid , Golden , and Los Cerrillos . Carve out some time to stop at Casa Grande Trading Post , Cowgirl Red , and Tinkertown Museum , as well as Sandia Peak Tramway to soak up the postcard-worthy views from up high.

Sangre de Cristo Mountains

According to Hans Loehr, adventure center architect at the Four Seasons Resort Rancho Encantado Santa Fe , the Sangre de Cristo Mountains offer something for everyone, including scenic trails for hikers of all experience levels. Additionally, he tells Travel + Leisure , "Guests can enjoy exploring forests of aspen, ponderosa, and pinyon-juniper and meadows filled with colorful wildflowers, relaxing near alpine lakes, bagging some high mountain peaks, and pausing to take in breathtaking views from ridgetops and mountain summits.”

Rio Grande Gorge

Stretching nearly 50 miles, the magnificent, 800-foot-deep Rio Grande Gorge is considered the Grand Canyon of New Mexico. Soak in sweeping views of the rugged landscape from the Rio Grande Gorge Bridge , which, at 650 feet above the ground, is one of the country’s highest bridges. It’s also a popular spot for hiking.

Sontanna Sanchez, a concierge at the Four Seasons Resort Rancho Encantado Santa Fe, recommends visiting Meow Wolf for a unique and immersive art experience. The kaleidoscopic “House of Eternal Return” features “more than 70 rooms, taking participants on a macrocosmic adventure only found in Santa Fe,” says Sanchez. All in all, the playful exhibit is sure to delight art lovers of all ages.

San Miguel Chapel

Located along the Old Santa Fe Trail in Santa Fe’s Barrio de Analco Historic District , this Spanish colonial mission church is considered the oldest in the United States. While initially constructed in 1610, it has since been rebuilt twice (most recently in 1710). In terms of design, prepare to be dazzled by the adobe architecture; the interiors are equally spectacular with centuries-old wooden beams and the 750-plus-pound San Jose bell, which has its own fascinating history.

Carlsbad Caverns National Park

This national park and UNESCO World Heritage Site is located in the Chihuahuan Desert in the southern part of the state. The enchanting attraction is home to nearly 120 caves. Travelers can easily spend the entire day exploring these captivating caverns, admiring the mystical stalagmites and stalactites, and spotting wildlife like bats and cougars. Don’t miss the Big Room, North America’s largest single cave chamber by volume. The 1.25-mile trail is a relatively easy 90-minute trek.

Old Town Albuquerque

With its narrow winding streets and adobe architecture, Old Town Albuquerque oozes small-town charm. While lots has changed since its 1706 establishment, this dynamic destination has remained the city's heart. Despite its tiny 10-block radius, Old Town is packed with more than 150 independent restaurants and boutiques. It also hosts more than 40 events annually, including a car show, live music performances, and the world-famous Balloon Fiesta Week .

Taos Downtown Historic District

Despite its small size, Taos packs in plenty of charm and character. What’s more, this storied mountain town is renowned for its many galleries , scenic hiking trails, and, in the winter, world-class skiing. At the center of town is the Downtown Historic District , where you’ll find the 1796-era Taos Plaza. Here, locals and visitors alike gather to listen to live music and attend farmers markets and other events, including dozens of art-forward programming. An abundance of shops and galleries can also be found within easy walking distance. When it's time to refuel, head to one of the nearby cafes and restaurants .

Taos Pueblo

About three miles northwest of Taos Plaza lies the Taos Pueblo , which is both a UNESCO World Heritage Site and a National Historic Landmark. The Pueblo has been inhabited for more than a millennium, and many of the adobe structures appear the same as when the Spanish first arrived in New Mexico in the 1500s. Hlauuma (north house) and Hlaukwima (south house) are the location's most famous buildings, and they’re considered the oldest continuously inhabited communities in the country.

Top 5 airlines serving from San Diego to New Mexico

The landing was bad and the hostess came two times and i was sleeping but when she served the person that nexts to me I woke up and she didn’t even asked me if I need any drink or snacks two times!!!!

Plane was late because of a mechanical malfunction and the food listed as available was not. Flight attendants seem over worked and under paid. They just done seem happy. And that can be seen in their faces.

Waited 3 hours on a plane to de-ice due to manpower issues. Waited another hour and a half once we landed because of a gate issue. Missed my connections. Created. A total of 13 hours of delay.

Great, on time departure, friendly and accommodating crew, great leg room, Smith flight

Plane was turned around due to fog half way into the flight, Delta did not properly direct passengers to stay on same flight and instead failed to properly rebook on Alaska

Like most domestic flights in the US, you are basically on your own with this airline when it comes to food, so be sure to purchase meals and drinks ahead of time or expect to arrive starving and dehydrated (like I was).

You need to be a hacker to get the (Free) WiFi

I guess they don’t serve drinks on planes anymore

The flight was overbooked and the staff at the gate started calling for volunteers to drop out and offering incentives. That delayed the flight

Do not get fooled by the term “Delta One” flat bed! The seats were super narrow. The ottoman for the feet was so narrow that when you recline the seat in flat bed position, you can only fit one foot in the 8” width space. There was only 1 flight attendant for First Class. The breakfast took 2 hours to get served. Instead of offering French Toast, the served bread pudding. The champagne with orange juice or Mimosa tasted terrible. Almost all the movies offered were ridiculously old. For a long flight from San Francisco to NY, it was frustrating! I DO NOT RECOMMEND this flight!!!

I really liked the way snacks and drinks were available throughout the flight!!! The flight attendants were also all fantastic!

Best Thing flight took less time than programmed, quick entry and exit. Recommended!

Always like Jet Blue! It seems, however, that people are getting bigger & seats are getting smaller! We had a very full flight and I couldn't get an aisle seat like I always do. I wish there were more leg room. People sitting next to me were very nice though so it was fine to disturb them if I needed to use the restroom. Otherwise the flight was fine but a bit long.

For some reason, the seats on this flight seemed unusually uncomfortable. Speaking with friends who took another JetBlue flight later in the day, they brought up the same issue.

None of the in flight Direct TV worked. A better selection of Shows would have been better. The baggage was s low. Otherwise we enjoyed our flight!

The service was very good, will use the airline again.

the staff was very helpful and the airline was very good.

JetBlue has really gone downhill. They have all the problems without the discounted price. If you need to get anywhere in time, this is no longer the airlines for you

Seat was surprisingly comfortable and roomy. I like the onboard “pantry”. Lavatory was kept very clean.

Flight was delayed 30 minutes, but otherwise was terrific. We used our points to upgrade to Mint for the first time which was a fun & comfortable. Josh & Kori were very attentive & genuinely cared about our comfort.

Airline did not explain reasons why flight was delayed two hours. Explanations were badly needed and rarely provided. Problem seemed to clearly be the airline’s fault and not the fault of the weather or airport.

Very uncomfortable seats and seat backs, and I am only 5’9”. Delayed due to crew issues, spent a long time with no ventilation. Teeny overhead bins. Wifi worked well. Arrived safely.

I was delighted that we were able to get on the 4:40 pm flight rather than our original booking at 6:55 pm!! Other than that, the flight was comfortable and landed early😊

We waited too long to get water while the plane was on the Tarmac awaiting de-icing.

I liked that we arrived earlier, you could improve your snacks give away

The Palm Springs to Chicago O’Hare was on Time and Palm Springs airport is easier navigate. As our connection was only an approximately 50 minutes, we asked staff for insights for the Chicago airport in terms of transferring into the other terminal from which our flight left, and they were unhelpful. However, the United App was very helpful in terms of notifications and even providing directions. The Chicago to Detroit flight was significantly delayed which we all know does happen. However, there were very few updates or notifications as to why this was happening when we would actually arrive. It took nearly 30 minutes for bags to make it to baggage claim. We arrived nearly 1 hour late on a 40 minute flight.

It was fine. Everything ran on time, crew was great.

Our flight was delayed many times throughout the day. The final delay was about 8 hours. I spent time in line to speak to someone at their understaffed desk, and also spent time waiting online and then chatting with a service rep. None of the United employees were any help at all. I desperately wanted to go get rest and possibly re-book my trip but I was denied any compensation or voucher for a hotel. I was repeatedly told it was not United's fault and therefore they had no compensation to offer. Overall, a cold and callous experience.

Paid WiFi was only available for a few minutes. Avoid at all costs.

Everything was great, only problem was that flights were delayed

Apart from the delay due to unforeseen circumstances. The leg from sjc to dfw was fine. It was the leg from dfw to orf that we encountered issues mainly due to the flight attendant crew not being friendly. We had two small children and we needed some assistance to warm up milk so the baby would sleep. The crew just didn’t get it and made things very difficult. One made a remark that the baby’s dirty diaper smell was a “gift” to the plane in a rude way. Normally I’d brush that off as a funny comment if the rest of the trip the attendants were helpful or understanding of the difficulty we faced. But that wasn’t the case. We were met with rudeness on the second leg. Whereas on the first leg the crew were so nice and helpful.

Flight From PHX to CVG was on time, very professional staff

Flight was delayed and missed connecting flight. Did not give warning about delay until we showed up at the airport. Not good.

The usual wait at Columbus once you land to get to an open gate (20 minutes) and then the usual 30 minutes for your luggage to appear.

Nothing, flight was supposed to leave at 758 am. My flight didn’t leave until 430 pm. Spent the whole day at the airport.

Everything was very good EXCEPT the food, on a five and a half hour trip. They only gave to us was snacks in first class. They didn't give us pillows or blankets.

It was wonderful upgrading to first. Plane was so cold thou. Crew was great. Wish there was a food option in first for such a long flight. Doesnt matter the time of day. Chintzy.

Do a bit better with n first class offer some real food and pillows

We experienced an involuntary change of schedule. Had 1st class tickets from Fresno to Bonaire, put us in coach from Miami to Bonaire a few days later - terrible flight, try to get a refreshment , water or a meal and air. We will never be subject to that again. I'd rather fly another airline that honors 1st class. Adding insult to injury AA reimbursed my wife's ticket $106.66 for the change in seating, me nothing. Haven't heard back from Customer Service, don't expect to - it's only online, can't speak with a live person. So the difference between 1st class and coach for that portion of the flight is only $106.66? Really? I've flown Delta and United on the same route, will go back to one of them again.

It was Christmas and the crew was awesome. And the passengers were patient.

Well, I didn’t have food! So NA wasn’t an option. I’ll be back!

Bought seats on the flight and they were supposed to be 2 and a jumpseat. Plane clearly changed and it was a regular 3 seat row. Asked for a refund and was denied. If I wanted to sit next to someone else I wouldn't have bought the seats..

I dunno. Depressing, uncomfortable (I’m poor), but on time and efficient.

Everything was good, and most importantly on time. They have been extremely tardy in some of my flights

First time flying with Frontier . From buying tickets ,getting boarding pass and boarding plane was super easy. Definitely would fly again with Frontier .

The check in at the airport was awful. Told I need to pay for a bag. The item was taken at screening. I went back to get my $ back and they gave me a coupon with a QR code that doesn’t work. Worst costumer service ever!!!!!

Our flight was on time and unremarkable which I'm grateful for, as it is not the norm traveling these days. Frontier is a low-cost carrier and it really shows when compared to other "normal" carriers. They don't even give you water during the flight. The coach seats are decent, however it was not as clean as it should be. We had crumbs all over the floor by our seats.

Flying frontier reminded me of flying with my family in the 80’s in all of the worst ways possible. From poor customer service to little to no technology. The plane was dirty old and also stuck in the 80’s. From their seatbelts to not having anywhere to charge our phones the seats and the equipment I wasn’t sure if I was being punked or thrown back in time. Needless to say I don’t see myself flying frontier ever again.

4 hour delay because they used our aircraft to fly a different segment (per the captain)

Lost baggage on my connecting flight. 24 hours later, still no update on my bags.

Canada Restores Visa Requirement for Mexican Visitors

The immigration minister said Mexico had not done enough to address the surge of asylum seekers arriving in Canada.

trip to new mexico cost

By Vjosa Isai

Canada announced on Thursday that it would require visas for Mexican nationals to enter the country, a move that comes amid a surge in asylum requests from Mexicans arriving in Canada.

The rule follows months of discussions between the two countries over the rise in the number of Mexicans entering Canada, including repeated attempts by Prime Minister Justin Trudeau to address the issue with Mexico’s president, Andrés Manuel López Obrador.

Some provincial officials say a surge of asylum seekers has strained their resources and their ability to provide social services.

“We needed to give Mexico, because of our friendship, the chance to rectify things,” Marc Miller, Canada’s immigration minister, said at a news conference.

“This clearly was not done,” he added, “so we had to take a decision.”

The visa mandate, which will go into effect Thursday night, had been lifted by Mr. Trudeau in 2016 to boost tourism and as a sign of the close ties between the two countries.

Since then the number of Mexican asylum claims has soared, to roughly 24,000 last year from 260 eight years ago. About 17 percent of all Canadian asylum claims last year were filed by Mexican nationals.

Most asylum claims from Mexico are rejected, withdrawn or abandoned, Mr. Miller said, clogging up an immigration system already facing difficulties trying to cope with a mounting backlog of refugee claims. “It has ripple effects,” he said.

For some Mexicans who can afford plane tickets, flying to Canada has become an alternate route to the United States, allowing them to avoid the smugglers who control the paths to the U.S. southern border.

U.S. immigration officials have recorded a large increase in the number of migrants, including Mexicans, crossing into the United States from Canada, though nowhere near the enormous numbers at the southern border.

“But they are significant,” Mr. Miller said. “And that’s something we have to manage as a partner with the U.S.”

Immigration has become a major issue in the United States ahead of the November election, and the Biden administration has made the tightening of the country’s borders a top political priority.

President Biden and Donald J. Trump, who is almost certain to be his Republican rival for the White House, were both scheduled to appear on Thursday in South Texas to discuss migration.

Mr. López Obrador told reporters on Thursday that his government respected Canada’s decision, but said that Canada could have sought “other alternatives,” without offering specifics.

He also issued a “small, respectful, fraternal reproach” to Mr. Trudeau, though he said that his government’s response would be “to act with prudence, with serenity.”

Not all Mexicans will be required to have a visa to travel to Canada. The rule excludes Mexicans who have had a Canadian visa within the past 10 years, or if they currently have a temporary U.S. visa. Travelers in this category need an electronic travel authorization, which is valid for up to five years.

Canada’s visa decision is the latest step in the country’s effort to address asylum claims made from regular ports of entry, like airports, and from unofficial border crossings.

Canadian officials in January also placed restrictions on foreign students , doubling the savings threshold new applicants must have to qualify for a study permit, after a surge raised concerns about pressures on housing.

After an agreement with the United States, Canada last year closed a popular land border crossing between New York State and Quebec, called Roxham Road , following a spike in migrants entering Canada there.

Some provincial leaders, including François Legault, the premier of Quebec, have criticized the federal government’s response and say it needs to provide more financial help to defray the costs of absorbing thousands of migrants.

About half of Canada’s 290,000 asylum seekers are in Quebec, the province’s immigration minister has said, and Quebec is asking the government for 1 billion Canadian dollars in assistance.

Updated travel information for Mexican citizens coming to Canada

From: Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada

News release

Canada and Mexico have maintained a deep, positive and constructive diplomatic partnership over the past 80 years. We have worked to ensure North America is the world’s most competitive economic region and maintain strong bilateral, regional and multilateral cooperation. To support travel and people-to-people connections between Canada and Mexico, while also preserving the integrity of our immigration system, the Government of Canada is adjusting its travel requirements for Mexican citizens.

February 29, 2024, 8:30 a.m. – Ottawa – Canada and Mexico have maintained a deep, positive and constructive diplomatic partnership over the past 80 years.

As of February 29, 2024, at 11:30 p.m. Eastern time, Mexican citizens who hold a valid US non-immigrant visa or have held a Canadian visa in the past 10 years and are travelling by air on a Mexican passport will be able to apply for an electronic travel authorization (eTA). With the high number of Mexican citizens currently holding US visas, the majority will continue to enjoy visa-free travel to Canada. Those who do not meet these conditions will need to apply for a Canadian visitor visa. This responds to an increase in asylum claims made by Mexican citizens that are refused, withdrawn or abandoned. It is an important step to preserve mobility for hundreds of thousands of Mexican citizens, while also ensuring the sound management of our immigration and asylum systems.

The application process for Mexican citizens seeking a work or study permit will not change. Mexican citizens who want to work in Canada will continue to have access to a wide number of existing labour pathways, including the Temporary Foreign Worker Program and the International Mobility Program.

Canada supports ongoing travel, tourism and business with Mexico. We will continue to work with the Government of Mexico to strengthen our regular pathways to immigration, and with our provincial and territorial counterparts to support a system of managed migration as well as to support those in need of protection. Canada is expanding its network of visa application centres in Mexico to better serve these clients. Today’s action will relieve pressure on Canada’s borders, immigration system, housing and social services, while preserving mobility for Mexican citizens who want to come to Canada.

The Seasonal Agricultural Worker Program (SAWP) is a vital example of the mutually beneficial migration that we seek to promote regionally and globally. Canada is ready to work with Mexico to build on this program, through the modernization of a new SAWP bilateral agreement, to offer Mexican workers new opportunities, through the incorporation of year-round primary agriculture and seasonal fish, seafood and primary food processing into the program. This will benefit workers and businesses on both sides of the Canada–Mexico relationship.

Canada is continuously monitoring the impacts of its visa policies for both visa-exempt and visa-required countries, as well as asylum claim trends. These challenges are not limited to one country. Any adjustment to Canada’s travel requirements are made to preserve the integrity and sustainability of our asylum and immigration systems.

More information about these changes, including for people in transit or with upcoming flights, is available on IRCC’s website .

“Mexico is an important partner to Canada. We will continue to welcome Mexican temporary workers, students, visitors and immigrants who bring diverse skills and important contributions to our economy and communities. We strive for balance between the movement of people between our two great countries, and the need to relieve pressure on our immigration system so we can provide protection to those who need it the most.” – The Honourable Marc Miller, Minister of Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship

Quick facts

Asylum claims made by Mexican citizens reached a record high in 2023 at a time when Canada’s asylum system, housing and social services were already under significant pressure. The majority of these claims (approximately 60%) were either rejected by the Immigration and Refugee Board of Canada, or withdrawn or abandoned by the applicant.

In 2023 alone, asylum claims from Mexican citizens accounted for 17% of all claims made that year from all nationalities around the world. The country’s asylum claim rate has risen significantly since the visa was first lifted in 2016 (from 260 claims in 2016 to 23,995 claims in 2023).

All eTAs issued to Mexican passports before 11:30 p.m. Eastern time on February 29, 2024, will no longer be valid—except for eTAs linked to Mexican passports with a valid Canadian work or study permit. Mexican citizens travelling to Canada without a valid work or study permit will need to apply for a visitor visa or reapply for a new eTA —if they are eligible.

Mexican citizens holding a valid work or study permit can still travel by air to Canada with their existing eTA as long as it remains valid, and they can continue to study or work in Canada based on the validity and conditions of their permit. Mexican visitors who are already in Canada on an eTA can stay for as long as they are authorized (up to six months from the date they arrive in Canada). However, if they plan to leave Canada and wish to return, they must have the proper travel documents (visa or new eTA).

Most approved visa applicants receive multiple-entry visas, which allow them to visit Canada as many times as they want, for up to 10 years, or until their passport expires.

The eTA is a digital travel document that most visa-exempt travellers need in order to travel to or transit through Canada by air. IRCC first began expanding its eTA program to eligible citizens from visa-required countries in 2017. Mexico will now be among 15 countries whose citizens can to fly to Canada on an eTA, instead of a visa, if they meet certain requirements .

34-year-old mom dropped $50,000 to cruise the world with her family: 'It was some of the best money I ever spent'

thumbnail

Last year, I paid $50,000 to go on a four-month cruise that took my family and me to 30 countries. My husband, our 12-month-old daughter and I shared one room that doubled as my floating office.

We spent 60 days at sea and 50 days in port, and we visited six continents. This was the most expensive trip we've ever taken, but it was worth it. I see the money spent as an investment — not just in travel, but in a collection of memories that we will treasure forever.

Here's why it was some of the best money I ever spent:

I didn't have to plan everything for a change

I'm no stranger to long-term travel. From 2015 to 2018, we lived in our RV and drove across the country. For the last five years, we lived on our sailboat full-time , and I ran my online business, Making Sense of Cents from there.

DON'T MISS:  The ultimate guide to   earning passive income online

We love this lifestyle, but managing it takes a lot of effort. You have to account for repairing broken equipment, sailing in overnight shifts, keeping track of multiple routes and preparing for all kinds of weather and potential dangers.

We spent so many years constantly on the move, but I couldn't remember the last time we took an actual vacation.

Stepping onto the ship, a lot of that mental load lifted. We only unpacked once and the cruise line handled most of the visa process for us. It was so nice to not to have to cook or do dishes for four months.

We did do a fair amount of laundry — inevitable with a baby — but we booked our room next to the laundry room on our floor to avoid any additional hassle.

I bonded with my family in a unique way

After our daughter was born, the idea of a world cruise piqued our interest. While she was still young, we thought it would be fun to slow down, travel with fewer responsibilities, and focus on being new parents.

When we embarked on our adventure, our daughter the youngest passenger on board. She was a veteran seafarer at that point, having lived on our sailboat (which we docked in Florida while we were away) since she was just a day old.

Since the rooms on the ship were so close together, at first we were concerned that a crying baby wouldn't exactly endear us to our neighbors. It turned out that the cruise was full of grandparents who missed their grandkids, so it actually worked out quite well.

There were few families on board, but we befriended another couple with a toddler and got together for many playdates.

I set a goal to go to as many international playgrounds as we could, and we visited at least 20. Our daughter even took her first steps on the trip, on a beach in Moorea, French Polynesia.

I got to experience many different cultures

The cruise started in Florida. Then we we traveled through the Panama Canal, the lush tropical islands of French Polynesia, the beautiful scenery of New Zealand, amazing cities in Asia and historic sites in the Mediterranean.

We're usually very slow travelers. For example, when we lived on our sailboat, we spent six months in the Bahamas every year. So it was a rare opportunity to see so many different places in such a short time frame.

Some of my favorite stops were Australia, Oman, Thailand, Turkey, Montenegro, Spain, Mexico and the Canary Islands. While the sights were incredible, to me, one of the best parts of the journey was being a part of this ephemeral, floating community.

I loved getting to know everyone on board, guests and crew. We're still in touch with many of our neighbors and we took some genuine friendships home with us.

I became better at living in the moment

I can stare at the ocean forever. That's one of the reasons why I loved living on our sailboat for so many years. We even splurged on a room with a balcony, so we could go outside and take in beautiful views whenever we wanted.

The tranquil days at sea were wonderful, although I think it was a little easier for me to relax than my husband. He was so used to being the captain of our boat, dealing with weather and fixing everything, but eventually he embraced the slower pace, too.

The most valuable part of this trip was that it allowed me to be fully present. As an entrepreneur, even when I'm not actively working, is easy to constantly think about all the things on my to-do list. Balance quickly becomes an afterthought.

I loved the simplicity of my daily routine on the cruise. I only worked the days we were at sea, for a couple of hours while my daughter napped. Then when we were in port, I put my laptop away.

This break was much needed. It let me focus on my family during a formative time in my daughter's life and it helped me better understand what truly makes me happy.

The 9 top cheap all-inclusive resorts in mexico.

These affordable all-inclusive resorts in Mexico offer ample amenities, activities and dining options.

Cheap All-Inclusive Resorts in Mexico

Vacations may be getting more costly than ever before, but it's still more than possible to get a good deal in ever-popular destinations south of the border from Playa del Carmen to Puerto Vallarta . The various hotels and resorts below offer all-inclusive stays with rates starting at less than $200 per night. These packages will typically cover all meals and drinks, and a solid selection of activities. Although, if you're really trying to keep a lid on your costs, pay attention to what's included, since excursions and some premium activities (like scuba diving) typically won't be covered. As with any vacation, planning ahead will also help you save, as prices tend to be much lower if you book further in advance, especially for the peak season, which runs from December to April in Mexico. Naturally, opting for a trip in the offseason is another good way to save. Without any further ado, here are the top affordable all-inclusive resorts from coast to coast across Mexico. Unless otherwise noted, all prices are for two guests sleeping in one room.

Binniguenda Huatulco All-Inclusive Hotel & Beach Club: La Crucecita, Mexico

Starting rates: From $168 per night

Packages: Opt for the Select room category for extra perks, such as a higher-end room and wine and snacks on arrival.

For something a bit more laid-back than ultra-popular destinations like Playa del Carmen, consider heading to this hotel on a quieter stretch of the Pacific coast. Binniguenda Huatulco All-Inclusive Hotel & Beach Club is located in the Mexican state of Oaxaca, which is renowned for its more sustainable approach to tourism. With colonial-style architecture and just over 100 rooms, it's particularly charming and intimate for an all-inclusive resort. Despite the smaller size, there are plenty of amenities guests can enjoy, including a fitness center, a sprawling pool surrounded by lush gardens, and a private two-tiered adults-only sun deck for a little extra peace and quiet. Although the resort isn't located directly on a beach, the nearest option is a short walk away and features a beach club operated by the resort. Visitors can also head farther afield for even more pristine, quiet beach options. The well-appointed rooms feature flat-screen TVs with cable, balconies, garden views, and plenty of natural designs and textures. As a smaller resort, there are just three on-site restaurants, but guests praise the selection of food and often rave about the omelet station at breakfast.

Hacienda Buenaventura Hotel & Mexican Charm: Puerto Vallarta, Mexico

Starting rates: From $188 per night

Packages: The resort sometimes offers a deal where two kids can stay for free – check its website for more details. Early bird specials and seasonal discounts are also available.

If you're looking to avoid concrete, cookie-cutter resorts in favor of something with plenty of local character, the Hacienda Buenaventura Hotel will deliver – with a prime location in the heart of Puerto Vallarta to boot. Guests describe it as a smaller all-inclusive with plenty of heart and friendly staff members who are attentive, helpful and remember your face each day. Expect bright, colonial-style rooms with a classy vintage feel, thanks to wood-beamed ceilings and colorful-yet-tasteful décor. Even at the standard room level, you'll have vacation essentials like a king-sized bed and air conditioning. The dining options (a buffet, a specialty restaurant and an eatery near the pool) focus on Mexican cuisine and previous visitors note that the food and drinks are brimming with flavor. Relaxation is a breeze here, with a spa section featuring a hot tub and sauna, and a pool with a swim-up bar in palm-fringed tropical gardens. The beach is off-site, either a five-minute walk away or you can jump in the resort's free shuttle.

Bahia Principe Grand Coba: Tulum, Mexico

Mayan Ruins of Tulum in Quintana Roo, Mexico.

Starting rates: From $110 per night

Tulum has a reputation for being pricier than other Yucatan hot spots like Cancún , yet an affordable visit to the jungle-meets-beach destination is certainly not off the table. Case in point: this Bahia Principe property, a few miles north of the town. Activities abound at Bahia Principe Grand Coba, with two lake-style pools and two Jacuzzis, as well as a water park, entertaining shows that'll immerse you in Mexican culture, and kayaking, sailing, tennis, and other sporty pursuits readily available. Excursions from Tulum to the Mayan ruins are also easy to arrange. Past guests note that between the kids club, aquatic activities and nightly entertainment, there's absolutely no shortage of things to do here. The elegant whitewashed rooms give you space to hang out with a living area and balcony or terrace, and amenities like air conditioning, minibars and safes. For dining, there's a particularly broad selection of choices, from a Brazilian grill to traditional Mexican cuisine to a classic buffet and more.

Barceló Ixtapa: Ixtapa, Mexico

Starting rates: From $140 per night

Packages: Choose between the regular all-inclusive package, which grants access to seven restaurants (including Mexican, Japanese, Italian and buffet options), five bars, and plenty of entertainment, or the more expensive Premium level package, which includes extras like top-shelf drinks, better rooms with ocean views, and access to specialty restaurants.

Crowds flock to destinations like Puerto Vallarta and Cabo San Lucas on Mexico's Pacific coast, so for a more secluded option, consider a vacation in Ixtapa, a resort town a little further down the shoreline. Ixtapa is known for its sandy beaches and year-round sunny weather. Barceló Ixtapa is one of the cheapest all-inclusives in this resort area. Its bright, tropical rooms feature king-sized beds, rain showers and complimentary bathrobes. Relaxing should be no trouble: El Palmar beach is right in front of the resort (and a great place to catch the sunset), and there are three swimming pools on the premises, including one with a hydromassage zone. For active vacationers, there's a golf course right next to the resort (fees apply, but guests receive a discount), and two tennis courts on the property. Past travelers call the resort family-friendly, saying they particularly liked the on-site entertainment, with highlights including the nightly shows and the Mexican Fiesta night. When it comes to dining, the resort has seven restaurants and five bars for travelers to choose from.

Woman snorkeling in the crystal clear waters of Cozumel island in Mexico.

Starting rates: From $176 per night

Packages: Upgrade to the All-Inclusive Privileged plan for extra perks like a welcome cocktail, access to an exclusive lounge and beach towel delivery to your room. You can upgrade on arrival or contact the resort in advance.

Relaxation is firmly on the menu at this destination in the resort town of Puerto Aventuras, situated between Playa del Carmen and Tulum on the Yucatan Peninsula. Catalonia Yucatan Beach features a whopping five swimming pools (as well as whirlpools), a white sand beach, and a spacious spa with offerings that range from hydrotherapy to beauty treatments to massages. You'll have ample opportunity to slow down and pamper yourself at this resort – but take note, spa treatments typically cost extra. Those looking to move can take on activities like snorkeling in the crystal Caribbean Sea, yoga or dancing the night away at the resort's weekly beach party. The vivid, orange-accented rooms are ultra-spacious too at a hefty 420 square feet, each of which offers garden views and a balcony. The all-inclusive resort has eight bars and restaurants dishing up everything from tapas to teppanyaki. Guests can be sure that they'll always have a snack or margarita in hand with that kind of variety, if they so desire. And it'll be served with a smile: Past visitors praise the staff – from servers to entertainers – for going out of their way to be helpful.

Riu Lupita: Playa del Carmen, Mexico

Starting rates: From $175 per night

With 300 rooms across its sprawling grounds, Riu Lupita is a formidable option for those looking for calm relaxation that's still within close reach of all the action of Playa del Carmen. The all-inclusive resort is set among lush gardens and features two swimming pools for all your swimming and sunbathing needs. Those looking to hit the beach will need to head off-site, but the resort has a private beach club that's just a few minutes away via free shuttle, and past visitors note that the transportation is convenient and easy to use. Plus, an extra restaurant and swimming pool at the beach club means you're not leaving the hotel amenities behind on this excursion. You'll bed down in spacious tiled rooms with classic wooden furniture, complete with a balcony or terrace and free minibar. The kids entertainment program provides plenty of outdoor activities and arts and crafts, so you won't need to worry about keeping the little ones occupied. Meanwhile, adults can enjoy live music in the evenings and the lively nightclub on the premises. Restaurant options include a buffet, a Mexican spot, an Italian dining option and a steakhouse, which was a perennial traveler favorite.

Cancun Bay Resort: Cancún, Mexico

Starting rates: From $180 per night

Packages: Join the Cancún Bay Preference Program for free and book directly on the hotel website to unlock perks like late checkout, a welcome amenity and a free 15-minute massage.

This smaller resort in Cancún's Hotel Zone is a good bet for larger families and groups, with brightly colored suites, some of which can accommodate up to eight guests. Couples are more than welcome as well, and the standard rooms have all the comforts necessary for a satisfying vacation: a king-sized bed, a balcony, a cable TV and air conditioning. Plus, if you're willing to splash a bit more cash on a special experience, you can arrange a romantic three-course seaside dinner. No matter your choice, past guests describe the rooms as particularly clean and comfortable. Dining options at this all-inclusive resort include four restaurants with menus ranging from sushi to pizza, and two bars (including the adults-only Jacuzzi bar). Room service is also available for a small additional fee. Sun-lovers can hop between the pool area and private beach with ease, since they're right next to one another (with ample deck chairs and sun beds available).

Occidental Costa Cancún: Cancún, Mexico

Aerial of the Hotel Zone in Cancún, Mexico.

Starting rates: From $145 per night

Packages: Join the My Barceló program for additional discounts on nightly rates.

This resort at the western edge of Cancún's famed Hotel Zone strikes a tidy balance between low-cost and luxe, with four outdoor pools (including a kids-only option) and the white sands of Linda Beach at the doorstep, complete with towel and chair service to optimize your lounging. Occidental Costa Cancún also offers access to nonmotorized water sports equipment (kayaks, snorkel gear and Sunfish sailboats) and there's an on-site kids club to keep youths entertained. Past visitors note that it's a popular spot during spring break: Those looking for a lively trip may enjoy this, but travelers looking for peace and quiet may want to schedule around it. Visitors looking to explore can head to nearby Kukulkan Avenue for shopping and partying, or sign up for excursions to nearby Mayan ruins at sites like Chichén Itzá (for an extra fee). For meals, this all-inclusive resort is home to a handful of restaurants offering choices from Italian to Mexican food. When bedtime rolls around, the bright rooms keep things simple yet cozy with king-sized beds, coffee machines, minibars and air conditioning.
