The legend goes that archangel Michael appeared to Aubert of Avranches, the bishop of Avranches in 708 in a vision and directed him to construct a church in his honor.

The bishop obliged and after years and years of hard work, the Abbey of Mont Saint Michel was born.

To simply answer that question, you can go by car, by train, by bus, or on an organized tour.

Unfortunately getting from Paris to Mont St Michel by train is not that direct since there is no direct train (except in some months) and you might need to switch lines and hop on buses in between.

However, it is one of the most economical and the best way to get to Mont Saint Michel.

Most trains to Mont Saint Michel leave from Gare Montparnasse in the 14th arrondissement but bear with me, I will give you all the possible options.

1st Option: Take a train from Gare Montparnasse to Villedieu-les-Poêles . This should take around 4 hours. From here, there will be a bus to take you to Mont Saint Michel parking which takes around 45 mins to 1 hour. This is probably the easiest and cheapest Paris to Mont St Michel Train . You’ll need to purchase your ticket on the SNCF website in advance as it requires booking seat numbers. I should also note that this one ticket caters to both the train and bus rides.

2nd Option: Take a TGV from Gare Montparnasse to Rennes which takes about 2 hours. From Reins, take a bus to Mont Saint Michel (the bus runs only a couple of times a day, so make sure you plan your time well). If you don’t feel like riding the bus for long, you can switch lines and take another train (TER) from Reins to Pontorson-Mont St-Michel and then a bus from Pontorson-Mont St-Michel to Mont Saint Michel parking .

3rd Option: Take a Normad train (Trains written on Region Normandie) from Paris Saint Lazare to Caen . Take another train (TER) from Caen to Pontorson-Mont St-Michel and then a bus to Mont Saint Michel parking .

Please note that no tourist bus or car can go beyond the Mont Saint Michel Parking. From the parking area, you can either walk to the Mont or take a free shuttle that runs every 10 minutes, sometimes shorter though.

This is probably the most flexible option if you’re planning a Paris to Mont St Michel day trip. You choose when to go and how many stops to make, and if you decide to visit other areas near Mont Saint Michel, it will be quite easy.

The only downside to this is that you’ll have to drive for about 5 hours to and fro which can be a lot considering that after the drive, you’ll still have to visit the Mont which requires a lot of climbing.

To get there by car, you can either take the A13 motorway towards Caen , then the A84 towards Avranches Rennes .

Alternatively, you can take the A11 motorway towards Le Mans , then A81 towards Fougères , and finally A84 towards Caen .

The second option is quite longer compared to the former but it gives opportunities to see various popular attractions along the way.

As I mentioned above, you won’t be able to go in your car to the entrance of Mont Saint Michel.

As a way of preserving the place and reducing the number of cars in the small parking just outside the walls of the Mont, there is now a dedicated parking 2km (1.2 miles) from the island. From there, you can either walk or take the free shuttle.

How to Get From Mont St Michel to Paris

While it’s important to know how to get to Mont Saint Michel from Paris, it’s also equally important to know how to get from Mont Saint Michel to Paris. Below are 2 options to consider.

Option 1: If you came by train using the 1st Option (See details of the 1st option above), you can still go back in the same exact way. Take the bus from the parking (the driver will mention the exact time the bus will leave for Villedieu-les-Poêles) and then a train from Villedieu-les-Poêles back to Gare Montparnasse .

Option 2: There is a bus from Mont Saint Michel (it has a station on the wooden walkway near Mont Saint Michel and others near the hotel area) to Pontorson Mont St Michel . You’ll need to pay for the bus ticket when you board. It’s just a few Euros. From Pontorson Mont St Michel, take a Nomad train to Gare Saint Lazare in Paris. Some trains are direct but for some, you may need to switch trains. If that’s the case, the train goes from Pontorson Mont St Michel to Caen and then from Caen to Paris Saint Lazare .

Which option should you choose?

If you’re on a day trip from Paris to Mont St Michel and came using the “1st Option”, you can still go back in the same way, however, you can also go back to Paris using “Option 2”.

Ultimately, the option you choose to go back depends on the time you want to leave Mont Saint Michel as both options have slightly different departure times and the train station you may want to stop at back in Paris.

Opening Hours for Mont Saint Michel

This may come as a surprise that there are no set hours to enter Mont Saint Michel (I am referring to entering the walls of the Mont). Just like any village/city, Mont Saint Michel doesn’t close. You enter as early as you want and leave as late as possible.

However, the Abbey of Mont Saint Michel has opening and closing hours.  It stays open from 9:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. between September and April and from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. between May and August. It also stays completely closed on December 25, January 1, and May 1.

Best Things to Do at Mont Saint Michel

Whether you’re on a day trip to Mont St Michel from Paris or spending the night there, these are some of the cool things to do.

1. Visit the Abbey

The Abbey is the highlight of any visit to Mont Saint Michel. It took over 1000 years to construct and the labor and pain can be seen from both outside and inside.

From the outside, a tower spirals the sky with a golden statue of Archangel Micheal and when you step inside, you’ll be treated to an architectural wonder.

Some of the must-visit rooms in the abbey include the monks’ rooms, cloisters, chapels, the Abbey Church, and more.

Don’t worry about looking out for these places, if you book this Abbey entry ticket and pay for an audio guide (to be bought on-site), you’ll know exactly where to go and what you’re visiting.

Please note that visiting Mont Saint Michel is free but you’ll have to buy a ticket to access the Abbey.

2. Take a Stroll Along La Grande Rue

Impossible to miss, La Grande Rue is the main street inside Mont Saint Michel. As soon you enter through the gate, you’ll see a narrow street full of restaurants and souvenir shops.

Take some time to stroll the streets, pop inside the shops to window shop, or better yet buy yourself a souvenir if you feel like it.

3. Climb the Ramparts of Mont Saint Michel

Like many Medieval cities around the world, Mont Saint Michel is also surrounded by Ramparts that were used mostly for protection.

You can walk around the walls as you contemplate their history, look down at the Bay, and enjoy stunning views as there are many vantage points.

4. Take a walk on the Bay

One of the most exciting things to do on a day trip from Paris to Mont Saint Michel is to walk on the bay.

On top of the nice feeling of walking on super soft sand, the experience is fulfilling knowing that at one point the tides will come and cover the very place you can now access. This is an experience you shouldn’t miss.

Just take off your shoes and go for a walk. Don’t worry about cleaning afterward; there are taps where you can clean your feet. (Not the tap at the main entrance but one at another side entrance.)

Be sure to check the tides timetable to avoid being stranded when the tides find you in the middle of the bay and try to always go with a guide.

5. Visit Église Saint-Pierre

Though the Abbey gets all the attention for obvious reasons, another place to see while on a day trip to Mont Saint Michel from Paris is the catholic church of Saint-Pierre.

Regardless of its small size, it holds a lot of importance as it used to be a pilgrimage place.

Though quite small in size, it’s worth a stop while exploring the alleys of Mont Saint Michel.

The graveyard is in a quiet spot just behind the Grand Rue. You can also admire the beautiful flowers in the cemetery.

You may think you know how an omelet is made, but you’ll be surprised! At least when it comes to a “Normandie omelet”.

Located on Grand Rue a few steps after entering the city is La Mère Poulard , a restaurant that has become famous for making omelets in a traditional way.

They’ve been making omelets since 1888 and tourists are welcome to watch the process. Just move closer to their open kitchen and you’ll be fascinated by the process.

And if you feel like it, sit down and have a taste of your own. I’ve gotta warn you though that it’s a bit too pricey, much like anything inside the Mont since it’s very touristy.

8. Take in the views of Mont Saint Michel from Barrage sur le Couesnon

While most people walk straight to the Mont or just take the shuttle as soon as they reach the parking area, Barrage sur le Couesnon (the dam on the mainland) is hands down the best place to enjoy the stunning view of Mont Saint Michel.

The good thing is that since most people don’t stop here, it’s not as crowded as you’d imagine.

It’s also a nice spot to sit and watch the sunrise or sunset or just to take in its full beauty at any time of the day.

9. Catch a Sunset with the Mont Saint Michel

With the imposing beauty of Mont Saint Michel, you can imagine how beautiful it becomes at the golden hour.

Depending on your return time from Mont Saint Michel to Paris, this is one thing you shouldn’t miss. This is however possible for people staying overnight instead of day-trippers.

As I mentioned above, the Barrage sur le Couesnon is the best place to enjoy it but the view from the wooden bridge walkway is equally beautiful too.

10. Take in the Beauty of Mont Saint Michel at Night

Don’t be in a rush to leave! Wait until dark and you’ll appreciate the beauty of Mont Saint Michel even more at night. In the summer, that may be close to 10:00 p.m. or so, but earlier during the winter.

Though the entire Mont Saint Michel doesn’t light up, (except in the summer) the few lights that are turned on at night create a magical sight when viewed from the wooden pedestrian bridge.

However, if you visit in the summer during the months of July and August, you’ll be mesmerized by the image, sound, and light show at the Abbey.

11. Admire the Beauty of Mont Saint Michel with and without the Tides

One of the fascinating things about Mont Saint Michel is how quickly the place becomes an island surrounded by water and how fast it dries out too.

Sounds impressive in words but it’s even more magical in reality. One morning you see Mont Saint Michel floating on water and in a few hours, you see the water starting to disappear. It’s such a fulfilling phenomenon worth seeing.

However, to be able to see this, you’ll need to visit on a day that has both very low tides and high tides at the same time. Check the tides timetable and plan your visit accordingly.

I was lucky to see this and all I can say is that it’s just mindblowing! You could plan to stay overnight to maximize your chances of seeing this wonder.

12. Visit the Museums in Mont Saint Michel

Lastly, another thing to do on your Paris to Mont Saint Michel day trip is to visit the museums, or at least one.

Granted they’re not as impressive as the museums in Paris but you can still consider them if you have more time.

There is a total of 4 museums on Mont Saint Michel with each focusing on a different theme.

The Maritime Museum focuses on sea life, the Historical Museum on a walk through the history of the Mont, the historic house of Bertrand Du Guesclin on a former French military man, and the Archeoscope on the mysteries of Mont Saint Michel.

Should You Visit the Museums in Mont Saint Michel?

I saw this question a number of times and I thought I should address it here! If you’ve visited big museums, you’ll definitely be underwhelmed by the museums in Mont Saint Michel.

The museums are quite small — you could visit each in under 15 minutes and there is not much to see. Plus, they’re a bit overpriced for what you see.

So, if you’re just on a day trip from Paris to Mont St Michel with a few hours to see everything, I recommend skipping them.

If you’re staying overnight and probably run out of things to see, you can see some. If you choose to visit one, I’d recommend going to the Historical Museum , but if you feel compelled to add a second one, it should probably be the Archeoscope Museum .

Otherwise, you’d not miss much if you choose to skip the museums but I wanted to mention them so that you have various options for things to do in Mont Saint Michel.

13. Walk Through the Narrowest Route in Mont Saint Michel

One of the fun things to do in Mont Saint Michel is to walk through its narrowest street.

It’s just off La Grande Rue and easily traceable as you’ll find a number of people trying to go through it.

Even if you choose not to go through it, it’s still funny looking at people trying to fit themselves in it.

Where to Stay in Mont Saint Michel

Although a number of people just treat it as a day trip, I recommend staying overnight. You get to see the beauty of Mont Saint Michel at sunset and when it lights up at night.

If you choose to spend a night, there are a number of hotels to stay at both inside Mont Saint Michel and outside.

Hotels to opt for inside Mont Saint Michel

If you want to stay inside the Mont Saint Michel, I’ve gotta warn you that the hotels inside don’t have the best reviews as they’re a bit pricey for what they offer.

But, I can also understand the excitement that comes with staying within the walls of Mont Saint Michel. If you feel compelled to stay there, then you can check out the highly-rated ones below

Auberge Saint Pierre : This is probably the best hotel inside Mont Saint Michel. It’s clean and comfortable and has the highest rating among all hotels in Mont Saint Michel.

Hôtel la Croix Blanche: This hotel has basic but comfortable rooms. Nothing special to write about back home but it’s a great option if you want to stay in Mont Saint Michel. Some rooms even offer views of the bay. The main downside is the lack of value for money.

Hotels to Opt for Near the Mont Saint Michel

Hotels outside Mont Saint Michel are a bit more modern and offer more amenities. They also offer more value for money and some even have views of Mont Saint Michel itself.

Le Relais Du Roy : This is where I stayed when I visited Mont Saint Michel from Paris. The staff are helpful, the rooms are clean and comfortable and they offer all the basic amenities for a low budget. The best part is that it’s one of the hotels near the Mont Saint Michel so you can walk there if you choose to and you also get to enjoy a nice view of the Mont from their tiny balcony.

Chambres d’Hôtes Les Vieilles Digues : This bed and breakfast is one of the best options to consider. It is also near Mont Saint and rated the highest in the area. It is set in a Breton-style house with clean and comfortable rooms. It is also priced very well for what they offer.

Practical Tips for Visiting Mont St Michel From Paris

Now that you know how to get there, what to do, and where to stay, here are the practical tips for planning a day trip from Paris to Mont Saint Michel.

Wear Comfortable Walking Shoes

Stairs, stairs, and more stairs! Mont Saint Michel has a lot of stairs so you can expect to be climbing almost all the time. Instead of boots or sandals, stick to your walking shoes.

Take a refillable Travel water bottle

With all the walking required, you can be sure of thirst. Instead of wasting money on buying bottled water and in turn increasing the plastic usage, you can come with your own refillable water bottle. Check out my favorite refillable travel water bottle .

There are some drinking water fountains to refill your bottle every now and then. Unless the tap clearly says that the water is undrinkable, it’s pretty safe to drink from it.

Pack Your Own Food and Snacks

Mont Saint Michel being a touristy spot, restaurants fill up fast and not to mention pricey. If you’re on a day trip to Mont Saint Michel from Paris, you’re better off carrying your own sandwiches.

If you can’t make your own, just grab some cheap ones from a supermarket before your trip. You’ll find a number of people during the lunch hours unpacking their meals, so don’t be afraid to pack your own.

Carry Sunscreen

If you’re visiting in the summer, make sure that you don’t leave sunscreen. It shines a lot and there is not much shelter. You can buy this one if you don’t have one already.

Mont Saint Michel is not wheelchair friendly

Unfortunately, Mont Saint Michel is not wheelchair friendly ror accessible for people with reduced mobility due to the number of stairs. (See photo above!)

Take a warm coat/Sweater/Fleece

Even if you’re visiting in the summer, I advise you to take a warm coat, a sweater, or a fleece if you’re staying overnight because the temperatures change drastically.

Even if it’s burning hot during the day, as soon as it gets dark, it gets incredibly cold. After all, it’s right on the sea.

To fully enjoy Mont Saint Michel and see most of the things, I’d recommend spending 5-6 hours minimum. You can spend more time but that should be the bare minimum.

Yes, you can walk to the Mont Saint Michel from the nearby village of Beauvoir. It can take anywhere from 25 – 50 minutes depending on your walking speed.

I actually advise you to walk this path at least once when you’re on your Mont Saint Michel from Paris day trip.

You’ll get to take in the views of Mont Saint Michel from different distances and perspectives and you might even spot some Normandie sheep in the fields.

Are there still monks at Mont St Michel?

Mont Saint Michel is known for being home to several monks in the past who participated in a number of activities like painting and writing books on top of conducting prayers.

Though they were driven out a number of times due to wars, in 1966, a few monks spent the summer there during the celebration of the Abbey’s first millennium.

Fast forward to 2001, the monks from the Monastic Fraternities of Jerusalem came to Mont Saint Michel replacing the original Benedictine monks.

So, to simply answer this question, yes, there are monks and nuns living in the Abbey of Mont Saint Michel and they’re in charge of conducting prayers and overseeing the general spiritual life of the Abbey.

Although Mont St Michel is best explored on a weekend getaway from Paris or, even better, as part of a Normandy road trip , Mont Saint-Michel tours from Paris are possible and very popular. A Paris to Mont St Michel day trip usually takes 14 hours in total, along with traveling to and from Paris. This gives you enough time to explore Mont St Michel and take beautiful shots.

From 1 September to 30 April – open daily from 9.30 am to 6.30 pm.

The best time to visit Mont St Michel to avoid the biggest crowds is in November, early December, late January, February, and March. If possible, visit the Abbey first thing in the morning or late afternoon (after 3 pm).

The downside of visiting Mount St Michel during the low season is the light, which is not ideal for taking pictures. We visited Mont St Michel from Paris in February, and I missed the blue sky typical of summers in France! You also need to check the weather forecast before picking a date.

Best Ways to Visit Mont Saint-Michel from Paris

Paris to Mont St Michel by Car

Time needed: 4-5 hours (one way)

Of course, this is the best option to visit Mont St Michel on a day trip from Paris, but if you don’t have a car, we don’t recommend renting one only for visiting Mont St Michel.  

For those arriving by car, there is a dedicated car park on the mainland, 2.5 km away from the island, to preserve the maritime beauty of the place. Once you have parked the car, you must walk to the Place des Navettes and board the free shuttle to the island. Place des Navettes is 800 m from the car park, and the shuttles stop 450m away from the island itself, so there is a fair bit of walking involved too. The shuttles operate every day from 7:30 am to midnight.

Paris to Mont Saint Michel by Train

Time needed: 3,5 – 4 hours one way (depending on the train)

Take a TGV from Paris’ Gare Montparnasse to Rennes , from where Keolis buses travel to Mont St. Michel up to four times a day (follow the signs “Exit North”, and “Bus Station”).

You can also change trains at Rennes and take a local train from Rennes to Pontorson-Mont St-Michel train station.

Once you arrive at the edge of the mainland, you can either take a shuttle or walk across the 900 meters-long causeway ( Pont Passerelle ) that connects the mainland to the island. The shuttle will cost you €2 shuttle one way.

In the past, the island was called  Mont Tombe . Most probably, this name referred to a stone or a megalithic monument on the island for a pagan cult.

In the 8th century, the bishop of Avranches constructed an oratory in honor of the archangel St. Michael after having a vision.

In the 10th century, the Benedictine monks settled on the island at the request of the Duke of Normandy, Richard I, and they started to build an abbey.

La Mère Poulard has been around since 1888, located close to the King’s Gate and in front of the Tourism Office. Another must dish in Mont Saint Michel is the Lamb (AOP) Prés salés du Mont-Saint-Michel . These are the lambs that you see eating the salty grass around the island. The lams are carefully selected to resist harsh climatic conditions, the risk of getting bogged down, prolonged walking, and halophilic vegetation. The meat is very tender and has an exquisite, slightly salty taste.

In July and August, it is open from Monday to Sunday, 9.30 am to 7 pm.

A trip to France may seem incomplete without a visit to the wonder that is Mont-Saint-Michel. Here is our complete guide to plan a 1-day trip from Paris to Mont-Saint-Michel: your options for car, train, organized tours, private tour… And all our tips to have a good day!

This opinion is completely independent , based on our experiences. We visited the area anonymously, making our own choices, and paying all our bills in full.

Excursion from Paris to Mont-Saint-Michel

Can we visit the mont-saint-michel from paris in 1 day.

Yes. It is possible. The day will be long, very long. You should plan to leave early and return late. But it is quite feasible. And you must realize that you will spend more time in transportation than on site.

Is it worth it?

It depends. If you only have 3 days in Paris and it’s your first time visiting the French capital, there are enough great places to see there. We do not recommend it. If you are staying in Paris for a week, then taking a day trip to discover the unique place that is the Mont-Saint-Michel is worth it.

However, you should know that it is a very touristy and small place. If you don’t like crowds, you may find that it’s not worth it. In this case, we recommend you to spend a night there, because the experience is exceptional. Read more about this.

Where is Mont-Saint-Michel in relation to Paris? How far away? Card

Beware, on a map, it may look close but it is not next door.

• West of Paris, almost in a straight line
• On the border between Normandy and Brittany
• Distance as the crow flies = 284 km (177miles)
• Distance by road = 360 km (224 miles)
• Driving time from Paris to Mont-Saint-Michel = 4h to 4h30 (depending on traffic jams)

How long does it take to get from Paris to Mont Saint Michel?

Travel time depends on your mode of transportation:

• By car: 4h to 4h30
• By bus (organized tour): 4h to 4h30
• by train: 4h to 5h depending on the options – but you have to add the waiting time between trains and buses (that can make it 5 to 7h). We warn you right away, it’s not easy

It takes a 14 hour day to have some time to explore.

How to visit Mont-Saint-Michel from Paris: best options

The top 3 options are:

• On an organized tour the road is still faster and with a driver, you will not be tired. This is the option we recommend when you only have one day. See the options on Viator or on Getyourguide .
• By car to have as much freedom as possible and more time on site – but you will have to drive a lot Book your car on our preferred platform
• By train the best option is the TGV to Rennes and then the bus, but you have to make sure you get there because there are a limited number of buses during the day. There is no direct train. Book your train ticket

How long to visit Mont-Saint-Michel

If you go alone without a guide, we advise you to plan a minimum of 3 hours on site, but 5 or 6 hours will be more comfortable. We saw people leaving after 2 hours but it was impossible to get the atmosphere, to visit the abbey and the whole village in 2 hours. Don’t forget that once at the parking lot you still have to take the shuttle (15 min) or walk to the village (50min).

Be careful though, if you have difficulty getting around, Mount Saint Michael will be a difficult place for you. There are many slopes, uneven pavements and stairs.

Opening hours

The Mont-Saint-Michel remains open at all hours. It is a village. The shuttle operates from 7:30 a.m. to at least 11:00 p.m. in summer and from 8:30 a.m. to at least 10:00 p.m. in winter. The abbey is open at least from 9:30 am to 6:30 pm – reserve your entryslot The museums are open at least from 10 am to 5 pm.

Option 1 – Paris to Mont-Saint-Michel in an organized tour

• Easy – no headaches to plan
• Possibility to sleep in the bus
• No fatigue from doing a lot of driving
• You can look at the scenery or do something else on the way

Disadvantages

• The noise of the group
• Less freedom in planning – limited time on site (about 3 hours), you have to leave when the bus leaves!

If you are traveling in the summer, we advise you to book early to make sure you have a seat. This is one of the most popular excursions in France.

Choose one that includes the entrance ticket to the abbey. It would be a shame to come and not visit it at the top of the island.

We advise you to sit on the right side of the bus. That way, on the road, as you approach Mont-Saint-Miche, you will see it in the distance.

We advise you to take without the lunch option. Grab a sandwich, and make the most of your time there

Be sure to choose a tour that lasts about 14 hours so that it includes enough time on site.

The bus does not take you to the foot of the village. It stops at the parking lots and you have to take the free shuttle bus or walk to the fortifications.

To have the advantages of the organized tour without the disadvantages, you can choose the private tour version. It’s a bigger budget but:

• You have privileged information
• You adapt a little more to your needs

Option 3 – How to get from Paris to Mont-Saint-Michel by car

• Toll prices for the fastest route (otherwise it takes 1 hour longer each way)

OUR ADVICE FOR RENTING A CAR IN Normandy

• Compare prices on our preferred platform: DiscoverCars – one of the best rated sites.
• Choose a car that is comfortable enough (distances can be long) but compact (some parking lots and villages are narrow).
• Think of the complete insurance (some roads are tortuous and narrow).
• There is a lot of demand, book it early .

The nearest train station is Pontorson-Mont-Saint-Michel. But you still need a shuttle to reach the Mont-Saint-Michel parking lots.

There is no direct train to Mont-Saint-Michel out of season (you have to go through Caen or Rennes). In summer (end of June to beginning of September), there is one round trip per day. This is very limiting. This is not our preferred option.

• Train from Paris Montparnasse station to Pontorson station by TGV (high speed train) Duration 1h45
• Bus In summer, the company Kéolis Armor makes 3 round trips per day The journey takes 1h10

Option 5 – The Mont-Saint-Michel train (via Villedieu-les-Poeles – in summer)

This is a fairly quick option, and usually the cheapest.

• Train from Paris Montparnasse station to Villedieu-les-Poêles station by Nomad train Duration 2h50
• Bus In summer, the SNCF (French train agency) has a shuttle that connects with the trains. The journey takes 45min

The TGV and buses can fill up in summer, we advise you to book early. Book your train ticket

Option 6 – Paris to Mont-Saint-Michel by TGV and bus

The fastest option is the TGV high speed train to Rennes and then the bus. This is the fastest option, but high-speed rail can be expensive.

• Train from Paris Montparnasse station to Rennes station by TGV (high speed train) Duration 1h45
• Bus In summer, the company Kéolis Armor makes several round trips per day (more in summer than out of season). The journey takes 1h10

Alternative

You can continue by train to Pontorson-Mont-Saint-Michel station and then take a shorter bus. We do not recommend it.

You can rent a car in Renne and drive the rest of the way (1h15 drive).

Option 7 – Paris to Mont-Saint-Michel by train via Caen

This is a longer option but I still put it if you want to combine it with the Battle of Normandy museum in Caen (with a night at Mont-Saint-Michel or Caen).

• Train from Paris St Lazare station to Caen station

What day to visit.

If you want to avoid the biggest crowds, don’t visit on a weekend. On weekdays, it’s about the same in attendance but still with quite a few people. Don’t think you’re alone!

What is the price of the Mont-Saint-Michel

Mont-Saint-Michel is a village in France. This is a non-paying venue. You can enter for free. Its access is free. Stroll through the narrow streets, climb the ramparts, admire from the dam… it’s free. The shuttle from the parking lots is also free.

• parking as close as possible to the mountain – then you have to walk or take the shuttle
• the visit of the Merveille (the abbey), a must – see our article – reserve your entry slot
• entrance to the museums – there are 4 museums in the village. They round out the experience a bit with history and artifacts. But these are small private museums… Buy a combined ticket
• And of course the restaurants that have higher prices, given their location in a tourist area.

How to dress and what to bring

The most important thing is to have good shoes. It is an old village, on a small rocky island. Therefore, there are old cobblestones, steep slopes and many stairs. Heels are strongly discouraged. Choose stable and comfortable shoes.

Moreover, the mountain is located in a bay open to the English Channel. The weather is therefore changeable (and not tropical). It can be sunny, then rainy and then be shaken by strong winds. Bring different layers of clothing for wind, heat and rain

And if you are crossing the bay, boots may be necessary. Follow the instructions of your guide.

The islet was originally called Mont Tombe and was founded by an Irish hermit.

The bishop of Avranches, according to legend,  got a visit from the Archangel Michael in 708 and was instructed to construct a church on the island. Its impressive fortifications kept it from being conquered even by the powerful English. 

William Longsword, the second king of Normandy , formally annexed the mount into Norman territory in 933.

By the time the French Revolution began, there were so few monks living at the abbey that it was turned into a jail.

The prison was shut down in 1863, and by 1874 it had been designated a historic monument thanks to the efforts of people like Victor Hugo.

For centuries Mont-Saint-Michel was supported by French Royalty , survived the English Armies, and drew in pilgrims in search of religious knowledge.

Now, Mont Saint Michel is an icon of France and one of its most breathtaking destinations.

Transport options from Paris to Mont-Saint-Michel

Traveling to Mont-Saint-Michel from Paris takes a few hours since it is located roughly 362 kilometers away. However, the trip there is worthwhile. The beauty of Mont St. Michel cannot be matched.

Here are the different ways to get from Paris to Mont-Saint-Michel: 

Renting a car will provide you with the most freedom to explore at your own pace. Depending on traffic, the trip could take up to four hours. Parking will cost money, and you may encounter toll roads along your journey. Rates for parking range from EUR 9.10 during the off-season to €14.20 during the peak.

It takes about 4 hours to get there from Paris, and you should expect to pay roughly € 20 in tolls. 

Mont Saint Michel can also be reached by train, though there are no direct services going there.

Instead, you may reach Rennes by train from Paris’s Gare du Nord station. There is also a shuttle service that departs from the train station in Rennes and travels to Mont Saint Michel. 

A second option is to take the train from Paris Saint-Lazare to Gare du Caen and then transfer to the bus service.

Average train ticket (one way) is about €34 across the different train companies that serve the Paris to Rennes Gare du Caen route. Travel time is 4 hours and 26 minutes. 

You can either take a shuttle from the mainland or walk across the 900-meter-long Pont Passerelle causeway to reach the island. A single ride on the shuttle will set you back €2.

• Keep in mind that Mont Saint Michel has a lot of stairways and steps. Those who use wheelchairs or have mobility issues will find it challenging to get around here. It’s best to have a companion when you visit.
• To fully enjoy your exploration of Mont-Saint-Michel, it’s essential to equip yourself with a reliable pair of walking shoes.

By the 10th century, the small medieval village formed, its narrow streets winding up the hill to the imposing Mont Saint-Michel Abbey. Its transformation over the centuries is a testament to the indomitable spirit of the ages.

Having lived in Paris for four years, I’ve had my fair share of weekend getaways and short excursions, but this one’s got a special place in my heart. Let me break it down for you.

What I genuinely appreciated  was the flexibility the tour offered. There were options to go at it alone, with an audio guide or have a live guide. And the journey itself was a treat. The plush, air-conditioned coach was a welcome relief from the sometimes crowded Paris metro.

Bright-eyed and bushy-tailed (okay, maybe after a coffee or two), we met up at the famed Paris Pullman Tour Eiffel Hotel. This hotel is absolutely stunning and is a great choice for those looking for  where to stay in Paris  who want to be near the Eiffel Tower.

And if you’re not staying at the hotel, don’t worry. The Pullman is easy to get to on the metro via the line 6 or line 8.

The air was filled with that early morning excitement. Every one of us, from solo travelers to families, was buzzing about the day ahead!

2. Bus Boarding and Departure:

Time:  7:15 am

Punctuality was the name of the game. We climbed aboard our comfy bus, found our seats, and as 7:15 am struck, we were on the road, the Parisian streets fading as we journeyed onward.

The bus left right at 7:15 am on the dot – so don’t be late! The tour guides mentioned that they have had to leave people behind before for not being on time.

3. Essential Stop (Because, Coffee):

Time:  Approximately 9:15 am

About two hours into our journey, the bus eased into a gas station. This was a heaven-sent 20-minute break. Need caffeine? They got you. Tummy rumbling? Snacks aplenty. Nature calling? You get the gist.

It’s a short, sweet pit stop to refresh before the main event. We had about 20 minutes to get snacks, use the bathroom, and stretch our legs before boarding the bus again for the second leg of the trip.

4. Arrival at Mont St Michel:

Time:  Roughly 12:30 pm

As the clock neared half-past noon, the stunning silhouette of Mont Saint Michel started to appear in the distance, growing larger with every passing minute. The anticipation was palpable.

From the designated car park, we had choices. A quick 10-minute shuttle ride, which is what most of us opted for, delivered us right to the monument. For the more adventurous souls, there’s the option to walk. But be warned, this isn’t a quick stroll – it’s a solid 45-minute trek, though the views are utterly worth it.

6. Exploration Time:

Duration:  4 hours

Once there, the world (or at least Mont St. Michel) was our oyster. We had ample time to wander around, soak in the history, and explore the labyrinthine pathways.

My roommate and I decided food was priority number one. We landed in a quaint restaurant called La Confiance, nestled at the base of the monument, and enjoyed some moule frites and oysters, a  classic French dish .

And of course, a large glass of local cider to wash it all down.

With our bellies full and our spirits high, we began our ascent to the top of the abbey. There were tons of steps and it was a narrow and really steep path, but we were rewarded with views that can only be described as ‘breathtaking.’

7. Homeward Bound:

Meet-up Point:  Car Park Time:  4:30 pm

As all good things must come to an end, so did our Mont St Michel adventure. With memories made and photos that’d rack up the likes on Instagram, we gathered at the parking lot, ready to head back to the city lights of Paris.

On the bus ride back, we made another gas station stop about two hours into the drive for anyone who wanted to get snacks or use the restroom. Then we hopped back on the bus and hit the road, and were back at the dropoff point at the Paris Pullman Hotel by 9 pm.

Tip #1: Watch out for Mondays and Tuesdays

Tip #3: Stay safe while visiting Paris

Although Paris is considered a relatively safe city, don’t forget that Kim Kardashian had all her bling stolen while she was staying in a vacation apartment there. Just like any other busy city, you will find purse-snatchers and pickpockets in crowded locations, especially around tourist hotspots.

Just use common sense. Keep your passport and other valuable documents in a hotel safe. Keep your money in a money belt. Don’t wear ostentatious jewelry in public places.

Bo&mie in the 2 nd Arrondissement is the top-rated patisserie in Paris and close to attractions such as the Louvre and the Pompidou Center. In the early morning, you’ll often see Parisians walking out from patisseries with freshly baked baguettes. They do love freshly baked bread rather than long-life bread found on supermarket shelves.

If you want to find the most exclusive, Michelin-stared restaurants, explore the area around the Champs-Elysées. That’s where you’ll find many of the oldest restaurants in Paris. But, if you have a less discerning palate, the same area is where you’ll find McDonald’s, Burger King, and Starbucks. The top-rated French gourmet restaurant here is Pierre Gagnaire on Rue Balzac. Be prepared to spend at least €200 per person and you will require a reservation.

While in Paris, you should try at least one distinctively French dish, like coq au vin or ratatouille. If you’re feeling courageous, you could opt for snails or frogs’ legs…just so you can say that you did.

You should consider taking a French cooking class while you are in Paris. Learn from the best and make the dishes you love at home!

Snacks & sweets

For traditional street food, try the amazing crepes that you can buy from many street corners. You can eat these tasty pancake treats while you walk with savory or sweet fillings.

Before you leave Paris, ensure you sample some of its amazing desserts. The Crème Brulée is a delicious traditional sweet, and meringues are sweet and satisfying but also very messy.

Nightlife & Entertainment

Paris is famous as a getaway for romantic weekends, so of course you’ll find a rich variety of nightlife.

The most famous nightspot in Paris is undoubtedly The Moulin Rouge in the area of the 18 th arrondissement known as Pigalle. This historic cabaret club is where the Can-can dance was created and a favorite haunt for many famous celebrities over the past century, from Toulouse-Lautrec to Frank Sinatra. You can enjoy a cabaret here for around €145 ($160).

However, be aware that Pigalle is regarded as the red-light district. Watch out for overly friendly ladies and gentlemen inviting you into dance clubs in this district.

Champs-Elysées

The most exclusive nightclubs, restaurants, and live music venues are found in the 8 th arrondissement, around the Champs-Elysées. Many of the clubs here are impossible to enter unless you are a recognizable celebrity, royal, or billionaire.

You’ll need to dress up smart to get into any of the decent clubs here. And if you do enter, be careful whose drink you nudge and spill! But a word of caution — the exclusive clubs in this area also include a few strip clubs! They’re very different from the strip clubs in Pigalle, but still strip clubs. One to watch out for is the famous Whisper Club .

An example of a bar in palatial settings where you might be concerned about scuffing the silverware and smearing the crystal is simply called Le Bar in the George V Four Seasons Hotel.

This same area is also home to more touristy haunts which you won’t find so difficult to enter. However, these often contain more tourists than locals, so don’t expect a uniquely French experience. The club with the most laid-back reputation is the Dogstar Club . You might get past the bouncers without a $10,000 watch on your wrist and a designer cocktail dress.

Place Vendome

The 1 st arrondissement is literally the center of the city around the Louvre and where you’ll find boutique hotels with historic bars frequented by celebrities and the beautiful rich. Most of these hotels have strict dress rules to enter the bar, and you’ll need a healthy income to survive the night.

The area around the Metro Bastille, on the borders of the 4 th , 11 th , and 12 th arrondissement, is where the younger and more relaxed crowd hang out. You’ll find decent nightclubs, cafés, live music venues, and dive bars frequented by local 20-somethings.

Check out the Niki Club on the Rue de Lappe for a casual night, or maybe the Black Star Club in Passage Thiere if you enjoy live rock music or jazz.

If you enjoy the LGBT scene, the Marais district in the southern part of the 3 rd arrondissement and northern part of the 4 th is where you’ll find welcoming cafés, bars, and live music venues where all genders and sexualities are made welcome. Café Cox is one bar legendary for its welcomes.

Getting Around

When you’re trying to find your way around, you might get confused by the way addresses sometimes emphasize the arrondissement, sometimes the name of the area, and sometimes the zip code. To simplify this a little, the last two digits of the zip code are the arrondissement number. So, the Eiffel tower is at 75007, meaning it’s in the 7 th arrondissement.

You might be surprised to discover it’s not in the 1 st arrondissement since it’s so central to the city. However, the way the arrondissements work is beginning in the Louvre — the 1 st arrondissement and true center of Paris (where the king’s palace is) — and then radiates out from there. The first layers are numbered from the north clockwise and wrap around the central arrondissements. The arrondissements get larger as you get further from the center.

Most of the main attractions are found in arrondissements 1 through 8, which form the core of the city. This means that it’s possible to walk from attraction to attraction. But if you want to go a little quicker, Paris boasts an affordable and efficient public transport system. And the best way to get around is on the Metro.

With 300 Metro stations, everywhere in Paris is within a 10-minute walk of a station. A Paris Visite Travel Pass provides unlimited Metro travel within a specified zone for a set period of time. The Travel Pass may also be used on trams, buses, and the RER underground train system. A 1-day ticket for Zones 1 to 3 costs €12 ($13).

There are even more bus stops than Metro stations and bus services run every 5 to 7 minutes. This means that buses are often more convenient for shorter journeys than the Metro. Since a Travel Pass allows you to swap between the Metro and buses, you can simply take the bus when it’s most convenient but use the Metro for longer destinations. To learn which would be most convenient for your planned journey, you can check the route maps on the RATP (Regie Autonome des Transports) website .

Hire bicycles

Like many capital cities in Europe, Paris has a public bicycle hire scheme. Around the city, you’ll find 1,800 Velib bike stations with 24,000 bicycles. You simply require a credit card with a chip to rent a Velib bike.

There are over 16,000 taxis in Paris. Taxis are an expensive but convenient mode of transport. You can take a taxi from a taxi rank or hail one down in the street.

While you can opt to hire a car in Paris, be aware that Parisian drivers have a bad reputation for safety. Also, the congested roads are difficult to navigate and parking places rare. If you really want to enjoy your time in Paris, walk or use public transport.

Accommodations

When choosing where to stay in Paris, you should consider why you’re there. If your main interest is in taking your family to Disneyland, Paris, then you’ll find accommodation near there more spacious and much more affordable than most places in the city.

However, if you want to visit the historical and cultural attractions, then you should confine yourself to the central areas between the 1 st and the 8 th arrondissements, where hotels are within walking distance of the main sites.

Below, I’ve divided the kind of accommodation by area. However, this is only a rough guide. You’ll find 5-star luxury hotels in the budget and family areas, and I’ve previously stayed in a very cheap family guesthouse about 2-minutes-walk from the Arc de Triomphe.

You’ll find a lot of budget accommodation around the 5 th and part of the 6 th arrondissements simply because these areas are a little further from the most popular tourist attractions and famous streets.

But if you don’t mind a little more walking, the area of Montmartre is still pretty central and boasts character-filled, winding streets. And with Metro stations dotted all around the area, it’s as convenient as any other central location if you plan to get around on public transport.

An example budget hotel in this area is the Hotel Marignan  on a quiet street in the Latin Quarter. This historic hotel has hosted many famous guests, such as EE Cummings, and is within walking distance of Notre Dame.

The Rive Gauche area of the rest of the 6 th and the 7 th arrondissements is an easy walk from places like the Louvre and the Eiffel Tower. This makes the affordable hotels there perfect for families with young and impatient kids who just want to get there quick. Many of the hotels in this area vary between small boutique hotels and cozy, family-run hotels.

The aptly named Eiffel Rive Gauche Hotel is super close to the Eiffel Tower and would provide a great base for your family to explore the French capital.

While a few of the most exclusive hotels are in the 1 st arrondissement, the main selection of high-class hotels is found along the Champs-Elysees in the 8 th arrondissement. You’ll notice this coincides with where the most Michelin-starred restaurants and high-class bars and clubs are, many of which are attached to or inside the luxury hotels.

In terms of distance, the 1 st and 8 th arrondissements are neighbors, with the Champ-Elysees running between the Louvre area in the 1 st and the Arc de Triomphe in the 8 th . Government officials and important people have long made their home in the 8 th arrondissement, and it is considered the cultural heart of the capital.

A great example of a luxury hotel in this area is the Hotel de Crillon , which looks more like a palace or museum than a working hotel.

Although it’s fairly inland, Paris still benefits from an oceanic climate with cool but mild winters and pleasantly warm summers. Generally, the city sees light rainfall distributed evenly through the year, though sudden heavy showers can occur.

Paris gets coldest in January, with an average daily high of 45 0 F and a low of 37 0 F. During spring, the temperatures warm so that by April it reaches an average high of 60 0 F and low of 45 0 F. Spring is a great time to visit Paris because the flowers are blooming all around the city and the summer crowds have yet to descend upon the city.

The hottest month of the summer is July, with an average high of 77 0 F and low of 60 0 F. That’s when the city becomes crowded with visitors from all around the world. By October, the average high drops to 61 0 F and the low to 49 0 F. The fall is another great time to visit because the weather isn’t too cold but the crowds have diminished and the trees have donned their beautiful autumnal cloaks.

Attractions

The main attractions radiate out from the center of the city, which is the 1 st arrondissement.

The Louvre Palace in the 1st arrondissement was the main residence of the Kings of France from the 14 th century onward. Today it is much better known as the home of the world’s greatest art museum, the Musée du Louvre . If you want to see such world-famous masterpieces as the Venus de Milo sculpture and the Mona Lisa painting, then you should head straight for the glass pyramid in front of the grand palatial building.

The great cathedral of Notre-Dame in the 4 th arrondissement is so spectacular and famous that I cannot justify leaving it out of this list. However, please note that the Cathedrale Notre-Dame de Paris is closed for at least the next four years and maybe more.

After the devastating fire of April 2019, the cathedral and nearby surrounding area were closed to public access until sufficient repairs can be made to make the area safe once again. You can still admire its amazing Gothic architecture from a distance and maybe catch a glimpse of some of the restoration work in progress.

Eiffel Tower

The most visited attraction in the center of Paris is the Eiffel Tower in the 7 th arrondissement. Although this renowned iron tower was erected as a temporary structure in 1889, it is still standing strong and looks good for another few centuries of service. The fact that it was the world’s tallest building when built is eye-opening when it is compared to the Empire State Building in NYC or the Burj Khalifa in Dubai, but it is still the best place for a panoramic view in Paris.

Arc de Triomphe

This triumphal arch in the 8 th arrondissement was commissioned by Napoleon but wasn’t built until 1836, long after his death. It stands on a huge roundabout at the northern end of the Champ-Elysees and is one of the most recognizable and photographed monuments in the capital. The Arc de Triomphe is also home to the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier and the Flame of Remembrance that is kept alive in daily ceremonies.

You have to leave the city and travel 12 miles southwest to reach the Palace of Versailles , where Louis XIV moved his court in the 17 th century. Now this famous palace is a grand museum full of amazing reminders of the power of the great Sun King. Look around the interior and exterior of the palace for the many sun-emblems reminding visitors who lived here. But the true highlight for many visitors is the beautiful formal gardens that surround the palace.

Disneyland Paris

Also outside the city, despite its name, is Disneyland Paris, 20 miles to the east. This famous theme park is the most visited attraction in France. If you’re visiting Paris with children, you’ll probably want to devote two days to Disney because there are two separate parks here: Disneyland Park opened in 1992 and Walt Disney Studios Park opened in 2002. Inside both, you’ll find thrill rides for all ages as well as classic attractions, like actors dressed up as your favorite Disney characters and Sleeping Beauty’s Castle. The easiest way to get to Disney Paris is with a shuttle and entrance ticket deal .

Should You Visit the Beaches of Normandy with Kids?

As you visit the beaches of Normandy and gaze out from the cliffs or stand among the rows upons rows of crosses in the American cemetery, it is impossible not to be impacted by the tremendous acts of bravery as real life moments are shared on Normandy tours.

As a mother, as a sister, as a wife, as a human being, I was humbled by our family's tour of the beaches of Normandy on July 4, 2017 on one of our day trips from Paris.

Visiting the beaches of Normandy with our girls and learning more about the D-Day invasion seemed a most fitting way to celebrate the Independence Day of the United States of America.  

It worked out in our vacation scheduling that Chris, our girls, and I were able to tour the cemeteries, battlefields, fortifications, and beaches of Normandy together. I would totally recommend the experience for tweens and teens who can understand the significance of the tour.

Note: The Normandy Tours may be somewhat spendy. For our family of five, it was important to us and we planned for the investment. It was totally worth it.

You will want to plan for at least two days to explore Normandy if you are planning to visit Mont Saint Michel and other towns in the area while you visit the beaches of Normandy.

While many think of Normandy in relation to its role in World War II and D-Day, there are many additional things to do in Normandy that will captivate your heart and inspire your wanderlust as well.

1. Visit The Beaches of Normandy: Utah Beach

We met up with our tour guide, Adrien, in Bayeux for our bilingual Normandy tour.

The bilingual tour was nice because Adrien spoke to us in English; we then had a chance to look around as he then gave his spiel in French. We set off in a nine-passenger van for an amazing day of history.

Our first stop along the invasion beaches of Normandy was in Utah. Allied troops landed at five different beaches along a 50-miles stretch of the French coast. From east to west, the Normandy invasion beaches are Utah, Omaha, Gold, Juno and Sword.

The Americans landed at Utah Beach and Omaha Beach. The Canadians landed at Juno Beach. The British landed a Gold Beach and Sword Beach.

During the Allied invasion of Normandy on June 6, 1944—a Tuesday—the 4th Infantry Division was tasked with landing on Utah Beach. The division faced heavy resistance from German troops but was successful in securing the beach. From there, they began to advance inland.

Due to the success of the 4th Infantry Division at Utah Beach, their actions contributed to a significant turning point in the war.

2. Le Roosevelt Diner at Utah Beach

Across the street from Utah Beach, plan to stop for lunch at a little diner, " Le Roosevelt ". Your guide may also escort you down into a well-camouflaged bunker under the cafe that was taken from the Germans by US Soldiers.

3. Omaha Beach

Today, Omaha Beach is a beautiful seaside, summer destination. So different now from the Normandy beach of World War II.

As you stand on the beach under the bluffs it is hard to fully imagine what went on that Tuesday morning so many years ago. Of the five D-Day Beaches in Normandy, Omaha Beach was considered to be the bloodiest of all the landings.

4. Gold Beach & The Artificial Harbor at Arromanches-les-Bains

Gold Beach was the center beach of the invasion, taken by units in the British 50th Infantry Division.

On June 6, 1944, huge concrete chambers were towed towards the Normandy coast and then set in place creating Mulberry Harbour off of Gold Beach. German pilots were confused as they saw huge concrete chambers heading to France and could not figure out what they were witnessing.

You can still see the concrete blocks today off the shores of Arromanches-les-Bains.

5. Juno Beach

Juno Beach was successfully taken by heroic Canadian forces. The Canadian 3rd Infantry Division suffered heavy losses in the first wave of invasion, but by the end of the day they took control of the area from the German troops. You will find the Canadian cemetery nearby at Beny-sur-Mer.

6. Sword Beach

Caen, the main thoroughfare in this area of Normandy, was a vital city to both the Allied and German forces. As Allied forces arrived at Sword Beach, they found a light defense of obstacles on the beach and fortifications in the sand dunes.

You'll find a number of museums and memorials in the area:

7. Sainte-Mere-Eglise Church

Sainte Mere Eglise

Sainte-Mere-Eglise  became the first town in France to be liberated . The fighting around the town continued until June 7, when the Germans were finally pushed back.

Did you know that parachutist John Steele hung from the bell tower of  Notre-Dame-de-l'Assomption church  in Sainte-Mère-Église at the start of the Battle of Normandy in 1944?

When two plane loads of paratroopers were dropped into the area, Steele's parachute caught in one of the pinnacles of the church tower, leaving him hanging on the side of the church. Steele, pretending to be dead, hung from the bell tower for two hours before the Germans took him prisoner. He was able to escape four hours later.

8. Sainte-Mere-Eglise Museums

There are three small museums close to the church in Sainte-Mere-Eglise—C-47, Planeur Waco, and Operation Neptune. The museums are full of military memorabilia from airplanes to parachutes, clothing, supplies, uniforms, matches, guns, and medals. It is impressive.

As you walk into the C-47 replica museum, you'll immediately feel as though you are riding in a C-47 with the loud noises, the shake of the plane, cold temperatures, and surrounded by "paratroopers" (mannequins) solemnly waiting to jump.

9. Pointe du Hoc

Pointe du Hoc is a World War II Ranger Monument just eight miles west of the American Cemetery in Normandy. Pointe du Hoc sits high on a cliff offering expansive views of Omaha Beach.

On June 6, 1944, during the American assault of Omaha and Utah Beaches, U.S. Army Rangers scaled the cliffs of Omaha Beach, hand over fist to seize the German artillery pieces that were aimed at the American troops that would be landing on the beaches. The rangers' success came at a high cost of life.

10. Arromanches-les-Bains

Be sure to stop at the 360 °  Circular Cinema above the commune of Arromanches-les-Bains and Gold Beach. From here you have a dramatic view of the artificial harbors which were created to act as breakwater and allowed Allied forces to bring reinforcements and equipment to France.

Watch “The 100 Days of the Battle of Normandy” to see footage of the D-Day landings. Stand in the center of the room and watch as the film is projected on 9 different screens around you.

11. The American Cemetery in Normandy

When you see the 9,385 white crosses in the American Cemetery , row upon row upon row, you begin to sense the magnitude of war and freedom. Spend time wandering through the cemetery, reading the placards, visiting the chapel, and simply feeling the peace of this hallowed ground.

"The Normandy American Cemetery and Memorial in France is located in Colleville-sur-Mer, on the site of the temporary American St. Laurent Cemetery, established by the U.S. First Army on June 8, 1944 as the first American cemetery on European soil in World War II.

"The cemetery site, at the north end of its half mile access road, covers 172.5 acres and contains the graves of 9,385 of our military dead, most of whom lost their lives in the D-Day landings and ensuing operations. On the Walls of the Missing, in a semicircular garden on the east side of the memorial, are inscribed 1,557 names. Rosettes mark the names of those since recovered and identified."

12. German Cemetery

The German cemetery was temporarily used for American soldiers until a permanent place was given to them.

The German soldiers are buried two to a grave. It is the smallest cemetery size wise but has the most soldiers laid to rest there.

There are two branches of the Germany army in this cemetery, however, these soldiers are not separated by rank or politics.

In the center of the cemetery a huge mound rises up. Apparently, the identification of about 300 soldiers was mixed up. In order to still give them a proper burial, they were buried in a mass grave and given identification as their identity has been determined.

If you are planning to visit the beaches of Normandy or simply add a few more things to do in Normandy to your itinerary, be sure to allow for some time to explore Bayeux.

Bayeux features an Old Town with cobblestone streets, half timbered homes, a water wheel, the towering Norman-Gothic Cathédrale Notre-Dame, and the famous Tapisserie de Bayeux , an 11th-century tapestry that depicts the 1066 Norman invasion of England. You'll find it on display in the 18th-century seminary.

14. Visit the Abbey of Mont Saint Michel (Abbaye du Mont Saint Michel)

Visit Mont Saint Michel, an island commune, that lies a little more than half a mile off the coast.

We parked our rental car across the bay to visit Mont Saint Michel and found a bus to board to drive the 3 km to the Abbey. Just know that you will not be alone as you visit Mont Saint Michel as it is a very popular tourist destination.

You will need to reserve tickets to visit the Abbey .

Mont Saint Michel is uniquely located on a small rocky island off the coast of Normandy surrounded by the waters of the sea during high tides.

Innovative construction techniques utilizing retaining walls, buttresses and arches were used to help maintain the structural stability of the entire complex.

There are a lot of stairs within the Abbey, but if you are able to climb, you'll enjoy seeing:

• The view from the west terrace
• The cloister gallery and its architectural details
• The refectory (where the monks ate)
• The monks’ walkway

Rouen is famous for its cathedral and for being the place where Joan of Arc was burned at the stake. Things to see and do in Rouen include:

From what I can tell the earliest train on a Sunday from Tours that gets me to Pontosorn leaves at 1pm and arrives at 6pm. Is it possible to get to the Island, explore for a little bit and then get back across before the tide cuts off access?

Planning on spending the night and then heading to Paris the next day so I would also have the morning to explore.

See sncf-connect.com for train schedules and prices and buy tickets up to 4 months in advance for the cheapest prices. Take a train from Tours to Rennes and then a bus from there to Mont Saint-Michel. There are much earlier trains than what you've found so I have no idea what website you're using to find train info. You also didn't mention which specific date (Sunday) in August that you're traveling so other posters can't do research to help you if you don't provide a specific date. Perhaps there are works on the rail line on the date that interests you. No one knows. It looks like bus schedules for August (whether from Pontorson or Rennes) have not yet been posted but perhaps someone more knowledgeable than me knows more.

There are no Sundays in August when the tide is strong enough to cut off access, so this is not a worry. Getting to MSM in the evening in summer is a really good idea, it is a bit less crowded, you can enjoy the sunset and usually there are special night visits of the Abbey with some sound and light installations, it is a different experience (and then you can visit again the next morning for a more "regular" experience with a guided tour for instance).

I don't find the timetable for the bus between Pontorson and MSM, but at the moment on Sundays there is a bus leaving the Pontorson train station at 18.35 (that's 6.35 pm ;) ) so which would work very well for you. Usually the bus schedule remains the same in summer season, they may add a bus here and there but likely not remove one, so this bus should still run in August. Check again in April on the link given above (currently, on the English version, the link to the actual timetable is broken but you can find it on the French version of the website, just change the language in the upper right corner).

The very nice thing about the bus from Pontorson is that it takes you straight across the causeway directly to the entrance, you do not have to change to the shuttle bus in the parking lot. If your hotel is located on the mainland you will need to take this shuttle (free) or walk along the causeway. If your hotel is directly on MSM then no worries about that.

We came to MSM in the evening and explored the island and had dinner at. a restaurant near the Abbey -- just walked in. We then did the Abbey the next morning. We drove, so can't advise on transport.

I was looking at Trainline.com. SNCF-Connect was what I looked at originally but it wasn't getting any results with when I searched for tickets. Both were only offering one ticket for purchase at this point.

Just saw the timetable option at the bottom. I guess I just have to wait til April until I can book tickets for late August.

Oh good! I wasn't sure how the tides affected access and thought the walkway might be cut off at some point.

I'm thinking of staying at the Mercure and walking along the causeway.

I don't have to be in Paris at any specific time. Paris is more of a stopover as I have been a few times and only plan on staying 1 or 2 nights before heading to Italy . I'm not too worried about finding my way from MSM To Paris.

With this post, I just wanted to figure out that, if I arrived in the evening, I would be able to spend some time on MSM and get back to the Hotel later at night without getting stuck because of the tides.

Just be aware that, opposite to the bus from Pontorson, the bus to Rennes does leave from the parking lot and not from the foot of MSM so you have to either walk across the causeway or take the shuttle back. If you are staying in Mercure hotel and want to leave your luggage there during the day, then you will be on the appropriate side of the causeway for the bus back to Rennes.

I think the bus from Pontorson does have a stop near the landside hotels.

It's Mont-Saint-Michel (masculine) not Michele (feminine).

In the current timetable, there is an option to get there earlier on a Sunday: You can leave Tours at 9h15 am and arrive at Rennes at 11h17 am, with one change at Le Mans. From Rennes, there is a direct bus to Mont Saint-Michel at 12h45, arriving at Mont Saint-Michel at 13h55. You will have to check of course if the timetable will be the same in August.

The Mont is a tiny village on a tiny outcropping of rock. You can look at google maps and see that it is only a few hundred meters in width. It only takes a few hours to explore the entire Mont (including visiting the abbey) and 2 nights there is not necessary. However, an overnight on the Mont can be pretty magical (I've done that twice) so arriving late in the afternoon after the tourists and tour buses have left is a good plan and then you spend the evening exploring the little alleys/paths on the Mont (several places to dine) and get to enjoy it all lit up after the tourists have left (though I don't know if some of the "save the environment" measures have now prevented the Mont from being lit up at night). The next morning you visit the abbey as soon as it opens and get out of there before the tourist buses/hoards arrive.

With the new causeway I don't think the island is ever cut off. It certainly didn't come close while we were there although we watched the tide come in during dinner until it was too dark to see. Here are some snapshots from that October trip.
