Chase credit cards are often top of mind when travelers are booking trips because of their superior protections. Chase is one of very few major U.S. credit card issuers that offers a full suite of travel protections across its premium credit cards, including trip delay reimbursement and trip cancellation/interruption insurance.

Trip delay reimbursement covers reasonable out-of-pocket expenses due to a lengthy trip delay that is not covered by the common carrier. Trip cancellation/interruption insurance provides reimbursement for covered travel expenses when you have to cancel a trip or end it early.

Now that more people are getting vaccinated and destinations are reopening borders to tourists, you may be planning trips for later this year or into next. This guide will walk through which Chase credit cards have these benefits, what is currently covered and how you can file a successful claim.

What is covered by trip cancellation/interruption insurance?

chase sapphire preferred travel insurance terms

You can find the full terms and conditions of what is generally covered on your specific card in your Guide to Benefits, which can be found through your Chase account online. I'll use the Chase Sapphire Reserve Guide to Benefits as an example.

Here is a rundown of the circumstances covered by Chase's trip cancellation/interruption insurance:

  • Accidental bodily injury, loss of life or sickness experienced by you or a traveling companion that prevents you or a travel companion from traveling on the trip.
  • Accidental bodily injury, loss of life or sickness experienced by an immediate family member of you or your traveling companion when it's considered life-threatening, requires hospitalization or requires care by you or your traveling companion.
  • Severe weather that prevents a "reasonable and prudent person" from beginning or continuing a trip (terms about what constitutes as qualifying severe weather can be found in your Guide to Benefits).
  • Named storm warning.
  • Change in military orders for you or your spouse.
  • Jury duty or a court subpoena, neither of which can be waived.
  • You or your traveling companion's place of permanent residence being made uninhabitable, being burglarized or damaged by fire or flood.
  • You or your traveling companion's lodging accommodations at the destination of the trip being made uninhabitable.
  • Death or hospitalization of you or your traveling companion's host at destination.
  • Quarantine of you or your traveling companion imposed by a physician or by a competent governmental authority having jurisdiction, due to health reasons.
  • An organized strike affected public transportation which causes you or your traveling companion to either miss 20% or more of your scheduled trip or miss the departure of a prepaid cruise or scheduled tour (booked through a tour operator).
  • Terrorism (there are exceptions here; exact terms on what types of terrorist incidents are covered for trip cancellation and interruption insurance are listed in your Guide to Benefits).

Chase does provide an extensive list of things that are not covered by trip cancellation/interruption insurance as well:

  • Change in plans, financial circumstances and business obligations.
  • Preexisting conditions.
  • Any loss due to the voluntary surrender of unused vouchers, tickets, credits, coupons or travel privileges available prior to their expiration date.
  • Travel arrangements scheduled to take place after the 26th week of pregnancy, or when a multiple pregnancy (such as twins or triplets) or pregnancy associated with an assisted reproductive program (such as in vitro fertilization) occurs prior to the initial deposit date or booking date of the trip.
  • Any loss for a trip booked while on a waiting list for a specified medical treatment.
  • Medical travel.
  • Disinclination to travel due to civil unrest.
  • Failure of you or your travel companion to obtain necessary visas, passports or requisite travel documents.
  • Illegal activity.
  • Suicide, attempted suicide or intentional self-inflicted injury.
  • Drug use at the time of the loss (except if the drug is taken and used as prescribed by a physician).
  • Disinclination to travel due to an epidemic or pandemic.
  • Financial insolvency of a common carrier, travel agency, tour operator or travel supplier.
  • War (not including terrorism).
  • For trip cancellation only: Trips booked to any area known to be associated with terrorist activity.
  • For trip interruption only: Travel arrangements canceled or changed by a travel supplier unless it's the result of severe weather or an organized strike that affects public transportation.

You'll note that "disinclination to travel due to an epidemic or pandemic" is specifically listed as not covered. At the time of writing, Chase had given no update that would change this, which means canceling a trip you can go on but just don't want to is not covered by your Chase travel insurance .

If you do find yourself canceling or cutting a covered trip short, here are the basic guidelines provided by Chase on what types of expenses are covered for trip cancellation/interruption:

Non-Refundable prepaid travel expenses charged by a Travel Supplier (Travel Agency, Tour Operator, Provider of Lodging, rental car agency, Rented Recreational Vehicle Provider, commercial recreational excursion provider, Cruise Line, airline, railroad, and other Common Carriers). Eligible Travel Expenses also means redeposit fees imposed by a Rewards program administrator. Eligible Travel Expenses does not include Event Tickets or prepaid fees to theme parks, museums, golf courses, or other points of interest (unless such expenses are included as part of a travel package).

What is covered by trip delay insurance?

chase sapphire preferred travel insurance terms

Trip delay insurance provides reimbursement for expenses incurred when your trip is delayed due to a covered hazard for more than six hours, or if a delay requires an overnight stay. It does not include expenses that are covered by the airline or other common carrier responsible for the delay. You and your family members are covered when you put at least part of a trip on your eligible Chase card.

Covered expenses include meals, lodging, toiletries and medication, but do not include any prepaid expenses related to a trip such as a tour or activity fees.

Chase defines covered hazards as equipment failure, inclement weather, strike and hijacking/skyjacking. The Guide to Benefits specifically exempts any delay due to a covered hazard that was made public or made known to you prior to your departure.

Filing a claim

When you have a delay or trip cancellation/interruption that you think qualifies for coverage, you can file a claim through Chase's online claims center.

Trip delay reimbursement requires the following documentation:

  • Expense receipts – Keep receipts from all of the expenses incurred due to the delay. Meal expenses more than $50 per covered traveler must be itemized.
  • Fare receipt – You'll need a receipt that proves you purchased at least some of the common carrier fare on your card.
  • Multiple payment methods – If you used more than one method of payment for your fare, you must provide documentation outlining any additional currency, voucher, points or other payment method used. For example, if you used points to pay for your flight and just used your card for taxes and fees, you'd need to show documentation to that effect.
  • Common carrier statement – This is proof that the trip was delayed, along with the reason for the delay.
  • Original itinerary – You'll have to submit a copy of your original ticket.
  • Settlement from carrier – You are required to file a claim with the common carrier before submitting a claim with Chase. You'll need a copy of the settlement from the carrier, your insurance and any other reimbursement you'll receive from another party.

Trip cancellation/interruption insurance requires slightly different documentation:

  • Completed and signed claim form — You can get a claim form by calling your benefit administrator, or by visiting Chase's online filing application.
  • Original itinerary – You'll have to submit a copy of your original travel itinerary, including any prepaid activities that you are including in your claim.
  • Confirmation of cancellation/interruption – You have to provide documentation that gives the reason for the cancellation/interruption, such as an official doctor's note, death certificate, official military orders or other supporting documentation.
  • Attending physician's statement – This a document provided by a physician or medical facility that essentially acts as proof that you were treated by them.
  • Carrier cancellation/refund policy – You'll have to submit a copy of the cancellation or refund policies of the common carrier, tour operator or travel supplier.
  • Expense receipts – Keep the receipts of expenses incurred due to your trip interruption.
  • Monthly billing statement – Rather than a fare receipt, you are required to submit a monthly billing statement showing the last four digits of the account number as proof of prepaid travel.
  • Any unused vouchers, tickets or coupons — You can add these expenses to your claim, but you'll need to be able to provide proof of purchase.

When you fill out the claims form online, you will be asked to upload these documents. You can scan in paper receipts when needed. Typically, you have up to 90 days to file a claim after a delay or cancellation.

Proof of flight delay or cancellation

One of the documents required to file for trip delay reimbursement is a verification form that outlines the reason for the delay or cancellation by the carrier. You can typically get this at the airport when the delay or cancellation is announced, but keep in mind that it may require a supervisor. Each major U.S. airline also has a process for requesting this information after the fact.

Here is an overview of the process different U.S. airlines require in order for you to receive a delay or cancellation verification form:

Bottom line

Having a card with trip insurance can save you hundreds of dollars when unexpected hiccups happen in your travel plans, but it can be confusing to know what exactly is covered and the right documentation you need to file a claim.

Nothing is worse than getting through an entire claims process only to be denied or have to start over because you don't have the required documentation for the insurance provider. Before you start filing a claim, make sure you have the documents listed above. Keep in mind that a provider may ask for additional documentation related to the incident, so you may have to collect receipts and other forms to help your case.

How does travel insurance work on a credit card.

chase sapphire preferred travel insurance terms

Credit card travel insurance protects you from some unforeseen circumstances that may disrupt your travel plans. If your credit card includes travel insurance, you may be reimbursed if your travel is affected by weather, health issues or certain kinds of emergencies outside your control.

Typically, credit card travel insurance only covers the expenses that you charge to that specific card. And because different cards have different travel insurance policies, it's important to read the fine print in your card's terms and conditions to understand your coverage levels.

What is travel insurance?

Travel insurance provides protection for expenses associated with travel, both domestic and international. Travel insurance may reimburse you if your trip gets cancelled, delayed or interrupted--or if you have to pay medical costs that your primary health insurance can't cover.

Travel insurance benefits can be broken down into a few different categories:

  • Trip cancellation insurance may reimburse you if your pre-booked, non-refundable flight (that was booked with the same credit card) is cancelled under unforeseen circumstances, such as injury or if your flight is cancelled due to weather conditions or other.
  • Your credit card's trip cancellation insurance may reimburse you for prepaid flights and hotel stays booked with your credit card.
  • Trip interruption insurance (for trips that end earlier than planned) may cover expenses like the cost of a last-minute flight home. In most cases, only the part of your trip that was interrupted will be eligible for reimbursement.
  • Travel delay insurance may reimburse expenses, such as a hotel stay, that arise from severe delays.
  • Medical insurance works like a supplement to your existing health insurance, which may not cover medical costs that you incur abroad. Evacuation insurance covers the costs associated with an evacuation following a weather event or other disruption.
  • Baggage insurance is supplemental to coverage provided by your airline or via your homeowners or renters insurance policy. Baggage coverage may reimburse you for the actual or replacement cost of your possessions, should they go missing as you travel.

What are the benefits of credit card travel insurance?

Many airlines and tour operators offer travel insurance as an add-on at point of purchase. Credit card travel insurance, on the other hand, is a feature offered on certain credit cards.

Credit card travel insurance provides the following benefits:

  • Financial protection : Comprehensive credit card travel insurance can provide full coverage should a covered event--such as severe weather, a medical emergency affecting you or a loved one, or loss of employment--occur. In many cases, travel insurance may require you to pay any expenses out of pocket, then file a claim later for reimbursement.
  • Evacuation assistance : If your credit card travel insurance includes evacuation coverage, you can get help securing transport when a covered event (like weather or a political incident) disrupts your travels. Depending on the coverage provided by your credit card travel insurance plan, even emergency medical evacuations such as those on a private jet-may be covered.
  • Supplemental medical coverage : Many health insurance plans don't cover medical costs incurred outside the country. Even those that do are likely to charge a deductible. Credit card travel insurance that includes medical coverage may pay for some medical costs, including your primary plan's deductible.
  • Peace of mind : Having credit card travel insurance can give you the confidence to make bold travel plans--or jet somewhere sunny in the dead of winter. A major storm might snarl your vacation plans, but with travel insurance you may get fully reimbursed.

What questions should I ask about credit card travel insurance?

Credit card travel insurance provides many benefits, but be sure to understand what coverage your card provides before you book a trip. Do your research and ask questions to maximize the value of your credit card's travel insurance program:

  • What coverage levels does my card offer? Get a copy of your card's full terms and conditions to learn exactly what kinds of travel coverage are included.
  • Are my family members covered by my credit card travel insurance? Travel insurance typically covers events that affect your immediate family: for example, if your child gets sick before you embark on a flight. Your more distant relatives--and pets--may not be covered, however.
  • What specific events are covered? Understanding the events that can trigger a claim is crucial to getting the most out of travel insurance. For instance, involuntary unemployment may qualify you for cancellation protection--but leaving your job voluntarily may not.

Relying on credit card travel insurance

Credit card travel insurance can offer financial protection and peace of mind when you travel. Take the time to understand how your card's travel insurance works-and be aware that only expenses charged to your card are likely to be covered.

The last thing anyone wants to think about when going on vacation is getting into an accident, experiencing a trip delay, or having a bag lost or stolen. However, accidents happen, and being prepared before you travel can save you a lot of headaches. If you have the Chase Sapphire Reserve® , you already have free travel insurance. Take a moment to familiarize yourself with these benefits so that you don’t unnecessarily purchase a standalone travel insurance policy.

Here’s what you need to know about the travel insurance benefits offered by the Chase Sapphire Reserve® .

Note that to benefit from the protections outlined here, your trip must have been purchased with your Chase Sapphire Reserve® or with Chase Ultimate Rewards® points earned from that card.

Although these two benefits are grouped together, they are slightly different.

Trip cancellation insurance covers you before your trip begins. If a covered loss prevents you from traveling on your trip, Chase will reimburse you or your immediate family members up to $10,000. If the trip was booked using Chase Ultimate Rewards® points, reimbursement will be in the form of points.

Trip interruption insurance begins the moment your trip starts, including on the way to the point of departure or after departure. If a loss results in the interruption of your trip, this benefit offers up to $10,000 in reimbursement for cardholders and immediate family members. Reimbursable expenses include change fees as well as prepaid and nonrefundable airfare, hotels and cruises.

Valid reasons include:

Accidental bodily injury, death or illness experienced by the cardholder, a traveling companion or an immediate family member of the cardholder.

Extreme weather that prevents the start or continuation of a trip.

Terrorist attack or hijacking.

Court subpoena or jury duty that can’t be waived or postponed.

Quarantine orders from a physician.

Bankruptcy of the cardholder’s travel agency, tour operator or travel provider.

Chase has identified various occurrences that are not covered, such as cancellations/interruptions due to changes in plans or financial circumstances, pre-existing medical conditions, war, traveling against doctor’s orders or trips longer than 60 days.

The primary cardholder as well as immediate family members not traveling with the cardholder are also protected. The fact that Chase provides coverage to family members even if they aren’t traveling with the primary cardholder is a unique and important point.

The maximum reimbursed amount for this benefit is $10,000 per covered trip, $20,000 per occurrence and $40,000 per 12-month period. Claims must be filed within 20 days of the occurrence. In the event of a medical issue resulting in trip cancellation, cardholders must inform the trip supplier within 48 hours.

If your bags are delayed by more than six hours, this benefit will cover up to $100 per day for up to five days for essential purchases like toiletries and clothing. Coverage applies to the cardholder, a spouse or domestic partner and immediate family members (even if they are not traveling with the cardholder).

There are several expenses that are specifically called out as not covered, including contact lenses, glasses or hearing aids. It’s always best to check the fine print of this policy before expecting reimbursement for your purchases.

You need to file a claim within 20 days of the delay and provide supporting documentation to Chase within 90 days of the delay.

» Learn more: Baggage insurance explained

Lost luggage reimbursement protects you in the event that your luggage is lost by the carrier or you incur costs to repair/replace baggage that is damaged by the carrier. Coverage is up to $3,000 per passenger and applies to the cardholder and immediate family members (even if the cardholder is not traveling on the trip).

The benefit includes a reimbursement of up to $500 per person for jewelry, watches, cameras, video recorders and other electronic equipment.

You must report the loss/damage immediately to the common carrier, and proof of the report must be included with the claim. Claims must be submitted within 20 days of the occurrence, and supporting documents need to be supplied within 90 days of the occurrence.

This auto rental collision damage waiver covers up to $75,000 in case of a car accident or theft when traveling within the U.S. or abroad. This benefit applies to rental periods up to 31 days.

Covered costs include:

Physical damage/theft of the rental car.

Towing charges to move the car to a repair shop.

Valid loss-of-use costs incurred by the car rental company.

This coverage is primary, which means that you do not need to purchase supplemental coverage or get your own insurance company involved in case of an accident. Importantly, if you accept the collision damage waiver offered by the car rental company, you will not be eligible for this benefit.

Covered persons include the cardholder, who must be listed as the primary renter, along with additional authorized drivers added to the rental agreement.

There are many vehicles that are not eligible for coverage, including:

Antique cars.

Vans built to transport more than nine people.

Motorcycles and trucks.

Motorbikes.

Limousines.

Recreational vehicles.

You must contact the benefit administrator immediately to report an accident or theft, and completed claim forms must be submitted within 100 days of the damage/theft. Any remaining supporting documents must be received within 365 day of the occurrence.

Bottom Line: The Chase Sapphire Reserve card comes with primary car rental insurance. If a car rental agency charges $20 per day for this coverage, you could save $140 on a 7-day rental by declining the rental car agency’s collision damage waiver or loss damage waiver coverage.

When you pay for your trip partially or in full with your Chase Sapphire Reserve card, with Ultimate Rewards points earned on your card, or a combination of both, you could receive a benefit if your trip has to be canceled or is disrupted for a covered reason.

Examples of covered events could include:

  • Severe weather that prevents you from beginning a trip or keeps you from continuing your travels
  • Illness or death of an immediate family member or travel companion
  • Certain legal obligations

Examples of expenses reimbursed include:

  • Prepaid non-refundable expenses charged by a travel supplier, such as a tour operator, airline, or other common carriers
  • Non-refundable prepaid expenses charged by rental car or travel agencies
  • Under trip interruption, $250 for emergency ground transport

The trip cancellation/interruption coverage that comes with the Chase Sapphire Reserve card pays up to $10,000 per person, per trip , up to $20,000 per occurrence, and up to a maximum of $40,000 in a 12-month period.

Examples of losses that would not be covered could include:

  • Cancellation by the travel provider (unless due to severe weather)
  • You change your plans
  • Preexisting conditions
  • Financial insolvency of the travel provider
  • Losses that occur on trips exceeding 60 days

Hot Tip: The trip cancellation and trip interruption insurance that comes with a credit card, including the Chase Sapphire Reserve card, does not cover voluntary trip cancellations. If you think you might have to cancel a trip, you should purchase Cancel for Any Reason Insurance which provides coverage regardless of the reason for cancellation.

Traveler waiting at the airport departure area for his delayed flight

Trip delays of more than 6 hours or an overnight stay trigger the trip delay reimbursement coverage on your Chase Sapphire Reserve card. You and your eligible family members could receive up to $500 for each purchased ticket , per trip, for unreimbursed expenses for incidentals, lodging, and meals.

If your checked or carry-on luggage is lost, stolen, or damaged, you could receive up to $3,000 per person , per trip. There is a sub-limit of $500 included in the $3,000 maximum for valuable items such as jewelry watches, and specific electronics.

When your bags are delayed for more than 6 hours , you could receive up to $100 per day for 5 days for reimbursement of essentials such as clothing, toiletries, and a cell phone charger.

Make just a call if you have a roadside emergency and receive assistance with services such as flat tire replacement, emergency fuel, jump-start service, towing, lock-outs, and more.

The number of covered service calls each 12-month period is limited to 4 and the maximum coverage is $50 per service call. Any charges over that amount will be charged to the Chase Sapphire Reserve card.

Pay for at least a portion of your common carrier trip with your Chase Sapphire Reserve card. Then, if you or an immediate family member become injured or sick during your travels and need emergency evacuation, the card could provide up to $100,000 in coverage .

Trips must be at least 5 days in length , not more than 60 days, and the traveler must be more than 100 miles from home.

This is not reimbursement coverage — you must call the benefits administrator at the time of the incident to initiate emergency transport.

It’s rare to find any medical or dental coverage provided on a credit card, but the Chase Sapphire Reserve card offers this benefit for its cardholders and qualifying family members.

Here’s how the coverage works:

  • Provides up to $2,500 ($50 deducible) for emergency medical or dental services during a covered trip
  • Up to $75 per day for 5 days for a hotel if ordered by the attending physician
  • Emergency medical/dental services, hospital room, ambulance, medicines, and supplies are examples of covered items
  • The trip must be more than 100 miles from your residence

Travel Accident Insurance is a benefit seldom ever used but it can provide peace of mind knowing that if a covered death or dismemberment occurred during you or your family’s common carrier trip, there could be a benefit provided.

The card comes with up to $1,000,000 in coverage.

Whether you need assistance planning your trip or need help during your travels, you’ll have access to a dedicated phone line 24/7 . Receive assistance such as help securing emergency transportation, translation, medical, and legal referrals, help with lost passports, or emergency ticket replacement.

The cost of the actual services received is the responsibility of the cardholder.

Bottom Line: The Chase Sapphire Reserve card comes with one of the best collections of travel insurance benefits and protections available. To learn about additional credit cards also offering travel insurance, check out our list of the best credit cards for travel insurance .

How To File a Claim

Receipt in grass

The best time to think about filing a travel insurance claim is before an event happens . Before setting off on your trip, it’s wise to take a few minutes to learn how you or your travel companions could receive assistance, should your trip be disrupted.

Reviewing the process of how to contact the claims administrator en route, should it become necessary, could save you money and frustration after the fact for not following the correct procedure for coverage to be valid.

Reviewing the claims process in advance also makes it easier to gather needed information at the time of disruption, such as photos or a statement from the travel provider, versus trying to secure the needed documentation once you’ve arrived home from a disrupted trip.

Here’s what you’ll need to know about filing a claim for Chase credit card travel insurance benefits and/or protections.

Each specific travel insurance coverage has stated time limits to report a claim, submit the completed and signed claim form, and for supplying all of the required documentation. Failing to do so could jeopardize the processing of your claim.

The best rule of thumb is to contact the claims administrator as soon as an event occurs . This action can also help you receive proper instructions on how to proceed to make sure your expenses will be covered.

You will be asked to submit documentation for your claim to be processed properly. Keep in mind that Chase is not processing your claim as the card issuer utilizes a third-party claims administrator .

You could be asked to provide any of the following information:

  • A completed and signed claim form
  • Your credit card statement that includes the last 4 digits of the card and receipts showing you paid for the trip/car rental with the eligible card and/or associated points
  • A copy of your common carrier ticket and itinerary
  • Any related medical documents and/or death certificate
  • Documentation from the travel provider as to why the trip was interrupted, canceled, or delayed
  • Receipts for purchases and food expense receipts over $50
  • Copy of the travel provider’s cancellation or refund policy
  • Any additional documentation requested by the benefit administrator

Hot Tip: The claims process will be easier if you have saved receipts, kept travel provider cancellation/refund policy documentation, and have copies of your ticket information and itineraries.

Our list of Chase Sapphire Reserve card travel insurance benefits is an overview only. We have also abbreviated the coverage descriptions. You will need to access the official Guide to Benefits for the card for terms, conditions, current coverage limits, and claim procedures.

Also, note that most travel insurance benefits that come with credit cards are normally secondary to other insurance you might have that would otherwise cover the loss. If you are compensated by an airline for lost luggage, for example, you would only have coverage via your credit card for any excess loss you incurred above the airline’s payment (up to the limits of coverage).

The newest premium travel rewards card on the block is the Capital One Venture X card . We like that the card comes with an annual $300 credit for travel purchased via Capital One Travel .

The card’s annual fee is also lower than most premium travel rewards cards but you’ll still find travel insurance , worldwide lounge access , Global Entry or TSA PreCheck fee reimbursement, stellar earnings on travel, cell phone protection , and a respectable 2x earnings on all other purchases.

While the high annual fee may be off-putting, the Chase Sapphire Reserve card is packed with plenty of benefits to justify the expense — if you’ll utilize the majority of those benefits.

Our focus today was on travel insurance benefits that alone could save you money, provide compensation, and/or reimbursement if your trip is disrupted. But there is additional value in all the other benefits offered on the card .

A Priority Pass Select membership, for example, will set you back as much as $469 each year, plus $35 for each guest, per visit. The Priority Pass membership that comes with the Chase Sapphire Reserve card offers unlimited access for the cardholder and allows 2 additional guests at no charge.

The card also comes with a $300 travel credit , and up to $100 for Global Entry, NEXUS. or TSA PreCheck fees.

If you can utilize the benefits, the card can be worth it.

For Capital One products listed on this page, some of the above benefits are provided by Visa ® or Mastercard ® and may vary by product. See the respective Guide to Benefits for details, as terms and exclusions apply.

Enrollment required through Capital One website or mobile app. Upon enrollment, eligible cardholders will remain at upgraded status level through December 31, 2024.  Please note, enrolling through the normal Hertz Gold Plus Rewards enrollment process (e.g. at Hertz.com) will not automatically detect a cardholder as being eligible for the program and cardholders will not be automatically upgraded to the applicable status tier.  Additional terms apply.

The Chase Sapphire Reserve® and Chase Sapphire Preferred® Card are two of the most popular credit cards for frequent travelers due to their rewarding bonus categories and the valuable Ultimate Rewards points they earn. However, these two cards also provide a host of often-overlooked protection policies that can save you hundreds or even thousands of dollars in case of misfortune.

To take advantage of these protections, you’ll need to have paid for your trip with the Sapphire card you’re filing a claim under (or through the Ultimate Rewards travel portal with points attached to that card). Generally, this means using your card or points to pay for your transportation – plane ticket, cruise ship, train or bus – not necessarily other pieces like hotels or activities. If you file a claim, you can still be reimbursed for items paid for with other cards, as long as your travel was booked with your Sapphire card.

Since the Sapphire Reserve’s annual fee is so much higher than the Sapphire Preferred, you might expect it to have significantly better coverage. In some cases, that’s true – but the Sapphire Preferred holds its own in many categories. Here’s a rundown of the different travel and purchase protections offered by Chase’s Sapphire credit cards.

Trip Cancellation and Trip Interruption

Trip Cancellation and Trip Interruption Insurance

Trip Cancellation and Trip Interruption protection can reimburse you for nonrefundable reservations if you are forced to cut short a trip or cancel it entirely as the result of situations outside your control such as illness or injury, severe weather, terrorism, jury duty, or death of a traveler or family member. It covers the cardholder and their immediate family members, even if not traveling together, and applies to trips up to 60 days.

Both the Sapphire Reserve and the Sapphire Preferred cover up to $10,000 per covered trip, with a maximum of $20,000 per occurrence (for example if multiple family members have to cancel a trip for the same extenuating circumstance) and $40,000 per rolling 12-month period.

Winner: Tie

Auto Rental Coverage

Both Sapphire cards provide primary rental car coverage, which means that if you use your card to pay for a rental car and it’s damaged or stolen, Chase will cover the cost of repair or replacement as well as towing fees and “valid loss-of-use charges” from the rental agency. This coverage applies to rentals up to 31 consecutive days. The Sapphire cardholder (who can be an authorized user) must be the primary renter, but additional authorized drivers are also covered.

The two cards are nearly identical in their protections, with two small differences that won’t apply to most renters. The Sapphire Preferred has no stated maximum value for the cost of a car replaced under the policy, but “expensive” and “exotic” vehicles are not covered. The Sapphire Reserve card does not exclude expensive and exotic vehicles, but its coverage is limited to $75,000.

car rental insurance

Trip Delay Reimbursement

Trip Delay Reimbursement can cover unexpected expenses like lodging, meals, toiletries, and medicine if your flight, train, bus, or cruise is delayed. You can be reimbursed up to $500 per ticket purchased, and can only file one claim per trip.

Both the Sapphire Reserve and the Sapphire Preferred offer coverage if you’re forced to stay somewhere overnight due to your delayed trip. For delays that don’t require an overnight stay, the Sapphire Reserve’s coverage kicks in if your trip is delayed for six hours, while with the Sapphire Preferred, you’ll have to experience a 12 hour delay.

Winner: Sapphire Reserve

Baggage Delay Insurance

If your baggage is delayed or misdirected for more than six hours, Chase will reimburse you up to $100 per day for essential items including clothing, toiletries, and one cell phone charging cable, for up to five days. This coverage is secondary, meaning that Chase will only cover expenses not paid for by the carrier or by a separate travel insurance policy. Both Sapphire cards have identical coverage.

Baggage Delay Insurance - Lost Luggage Reimbursement

Lost Luggage Reimbursement

If your luggage gets damaged, never makes it back to you or you leave something on board and the carrier doesn’t find it, Chase will reimburse you up to $3000 for your lost items (electronics and jewelry are subject to a lower cap of $500). Like the baggage delay insurance, this coverage kicks in after any reimbursement from the carrier or a travel insurance policy, and both Sapphire cards offer identical coverage.

Roadside Assistance

If you have a roadside emergency, Chase will help you get a tow, jumpstart, tire change, locksmith or gas. If you’re a Sapphire Reserve cardholder, they’ll cover up to $50 per incident up to four times per year; if you have the Sapphire Preferred, they’ll send someone to help, but the cost of the service will be charged to your card.

Unsurprisingly, the Sapphire Reserve comes out as the winner in this comparison, beating the Sapphire Preferred in 6 of the 9 categories. However, it’s a helpful reminder that despite the Sapphire Preferred being $455 less expensive than the Sapphire Reserve, it still has a lot of similar or even identical insurance options.

Emergency Evacuation and Transportation

Emergency Evacuation and Transportation

This is one of those benefits that you hope you never have to use, but makes a huge difference if you need it. If you, your spouse/partner, and/or your dependent children experience an injury or illness away from home that’s so severe it requires medical transportation or evacuation, Chase will cover up to $100,000 in expenses if you paid for the trip with your Sapphire Reserve card.

The Sapphire Preferred card does not offer this benefit.

Pro tip: If emergency evacuation coverage is important to you, the American Express Platinum Card offers unbeatable coverage: there’s no cap on the amount they’ll pay, and you’re covered just for being a Platinum cardmember regardless of whether you used the card to pay for the trip.

Travel Accident Insurance

Okay, this is really the one you never want to have to use. Both Sapphire cards provide insurance in case of “accidental death or dismemberment, or a combined loss of speech, sight or hearing” while traveling on an airplane, bus, train, or cruise ship, or while you’re away from home if you’ve flown somewhere.

Both cards offer up to $100,000 in coverage for covered incidents between the day you leave and the day you return home. If the accident happens while you’re on board, boarding, or exiting one of the aforementioned carriers, Sapphire Preferred cardholders get up to $500,000 in coverage while Sapphire Reserve cardholders are covered up to $1,000,000.

Travel Accident Insurance

Emergency Medical and Dental Coverage

This benefit is one of the rarest and most interesting travel protections available on a credit card. If you’re traveling at least 100 miles away from home and require emergency medical or dental care, Chase will step in and reimburse you for expenses not covered by your health insurance, up to $2,500. They have a deductible of just $50, and will even pay $75/day for a hotel for up to five days if a doctor says you need time to recover before traveling back home.

This benefit is exclusive to the Sapphire Reserve.

Bottom Line

Unsurprisingly, the Sapphire Reserve comes out as the winner in this comparison, beating the Sapphire Preferred in 6 of the 9 categories. However, it’s a helpful reminder that despite the Sapphire Preferred being $455 less expensive than the Sapphire Reserve, it still has a lot of similar or even identical insurance options. Hopefully, you’ll never need to use any of these policies – but if you do, any of them could easily make up for many years’ worth of credit card annual fees.

Chase Sapphire Preferred vs. Amex Gold: Which mid-tier favorite is right for you?

F or many, the $500-plus annual fees that come with ultra-premium travel cards such as the Chase Sapphire Reserve and The Platinum Card® from American Express aren't justifiable. If you aren't traveling regularly and utilizing the full lineup of perks and credits, it may not be worth adding those cards to your wallet.

However, both Chase and Amex have excellent travel cards that fall under their premium versions — the Chase Sapphire Preferred Card and the American Express® Gold Card .

While both of these cards act as sister cards to their luxury counterparts, there are many differences between them. Today, we're walking through a side-by-side comparison of these cards to help you determine which is right for you — or whether both deserve spots in your wallet .

Sapphire Preferred vs. Amex Gold comparison

Here's a quick overview that compares the key perks on the two cards (note that enrollment is required for select benefits):

Point valuations are calculated by TPG , not the issuer.

*Eligibility and benefit level varies by card. Terms, conditions and limitations apply. Visit americanexpress.com/benefitsguide for details. Policies are underwritten by AMEX Assurance Company.

**Eligibility and benefit level varies by card. Terms, conditions and limitations apply. Visit americanexpress.com/benefitsguide for details. Policies are underwritten by New Hampshire Insurance Company, an AIG Company.

^Eligibility and benefit level varies by card. Not all vehicle types or rentals are covered, and geographic restrictions apply. Terms, conditions and limitations apply. Visit americanexpress.com/benefitsguide for details. Policies are underwritten by AMEX Assurance Company. Coverage is offered through American Express Travel Related Services Company, Inc.

Sapphire Preferred vs. Amex Gold welcome offer

The Sapphire Preferred offers a compelling sign-up bonus for first-time applicants. You'll earn 60,000 bonus points after you spend $4,000 on purchases in the first three months from account opening. TPG values Ultimate Rewards points at 2.05 cents each, making this bonus worth $1,230.

The Amex Gold Card currently has a similar welcome offer of 60,000 Membership Rewards points after you spend $6,000 in purchases in the first six months of account opening. TPG values Membership Rewards at a flat 2 cents each, so this offer is worth a slightly lower $1,200 according to our valuation. However, you have three more months to earn the Amex Gold's offer than with the Sapphire Preferred.

Plus, you could be targeted for a higher welcome offer on the Amex Gold through the CardMatch tool or through a referral link (offers subject to change at any time).

Winner: Tie. The Sapphire Preferred's bonus is slightly more valuable but you have more time to earn the Amex Gold's bonus.

Sapphire Preferred vs. Amex Gold benefits

In exchange for a $95 annual fee, the Sapphire Preferred offers many travel perks, including a $50 annual hotel credit for bookings through Chase Travel and a 10% points bonus on your cardmember anniversary.

Other benefits include protections like rental car insurance, trip delay and cancellation insurance and baggage loss and delay insurance. These are a great safety net while you travel, but they don't do much to enhance your day-to-day life when everything goes according to plan.

For more than double the Sapphire Preferred's annual fee ($250 vs. $95), the Amex Gold offers several excellent perks (enrollment is required for select benefits):

  • Up to $120 annual dining statement credit : Earn up to $10 in statement credits monthly when you pay with the Amex Gold Card at participating dining partners, including Grubhub, The Cheesecake Factory, Goldbelly, Wine.com, Milk Bar and select Shake Shack locations.
  • Up to $120 in annual Uber Cash : Get up to $10 in Uber Cash monthly for Uber Eats and Uber rides in the U.S. You must add the card to the Uber app to receive the Uber Cash benefit. This perk is a monthly credit similar to the Uber Cash on the Amex Platinum.
  • Up to $100 in hotel credits: Cardmembers who use their card to book a stay of two nights or more through Amex's The Hotel Collection receive a $100 on-site credit for qualifying activities. Depending on the property, this could include dining, spa treatments or other activities.

Amex Gold cardholders also receive travel and purchase protections.

Winner : Tie. The Sapphire Preferred is a good value for the price, but the Amex Gold Card costs less out of pocket if you can maximize its Uber and dining credits.

Earning points on the Sapphire Preferred vs. Amex Gold

The Sapphire Preferred offers useful bonus categories, but the real highlight isn't just the categories themselves but how broadly they're defined. With it, you'll earn 3 points per dollar on a few notable categories:

  • Dining , including not just restaurants but many bars, breweries, food trucks and even meal delivery services
  • Select streaming services, including Apple, Disney+, HBO Max, Netflix, SiriusXM, Spotify, and YouTube TV
  • Online grocery stores, which include Instacart and many meal delivery services but exclude Target, Walmart and wholesale clubs

You'll also receive 2 points per dollar on purchases Chase categorizes as travel , which includes hotels, airfare and rental cars as well as things like Uber, parking meters and limousine rentals. This jumps to 5 points per dollar for travel when you book through Chase's travel portal (excluding hotel reservations that qualify for the $50 credit).

Additionally, the Sapphire Preferred earns 5 points per dollar on Lyft through March 2025.

These are solid rates on a wide range of purchases. Still, the Amex Gold may shine brighter when it comes to its earning structure:

  • 4 points per dollar at restaurants worldwide (including takeout and delivery in the U.S.)
  • 4 points per dollar at U.S. supermarkets (up to $25,000 in spending per calendar year, then 1 point per dollar)
  • 3 points per dollar on flights booked directly with the airline or through Amex Travel
  • Terms apply.

Winner: Amex Gold. Its higher earning rates on dining and at U.S. supermarkets, as well as on flights booked directly with an airline, give it the upper hand.

Redeeming points on the Sapphire Preferred vs. Amex Gold

Both of these cards are similar in that they earn some of the most valuable transferable points currencies around.

The Sapphire Preferred earns Ultimate Rewards points that you can redeem for travel through the Chase Ultimate Rewards portal or for other items such as gift cards and even as a statement credit. You'll get a 25% bonus when redeeming points for travel through the Chase travel portal. But you'll get the most value by transferring your points to one of Chase's 14 valuable hotel and airline transfer partners , including United, Southwest, Hyatt and British Airways.

The Amex Gold earns similarly valuable Membership Rewards points, which you can redeem for travel directly through AmexTravel.com or for gift cards and statement credits. Again, you'll get the best value from your points by transferring them to one of 21 valuable hotel and airline partners . This includes some that overlap with Chase — like Air Canada Aeroplan and British Airways. However, some are different, including Delta SkyMiles, Avianca LifeMiles and ANA Mileage Club.

Winner : Tie. Both cards earn transferable rewards and give you a wide range of valuable redemption options.

Transferring points on the Sapphire Preferred vs. Amex Gold

TPG values Chase Ultimate Rewards at 2.05 cents and Amex Membership points at 2 cents, but your travel habits might make one currency better than the other for you.

For example, if you live in a Delta hub, you might get more value out of transferring your Membership Rewards points to Delta SkyMiles, while those who have a coveted Southwest Companion Pass can get some incredible value by transferring Chase Ultimate Rewards to Southwest Rapid Rewards.

Senior credit cards editor Matt Moffitt utilizes his Sapphire Preferred often by transferring points to British Airways Executive Club to take advantage of some sweet spots on American Airlines flights .

Winner : Tie. Both cards transfer to various partners, all with their respective redemption options and sweet spots.

Related: Why transferable points are worth more than other rewards

Should I get the Sapphire Preferred or Amex Gold?

If you spend most of your budget on groceries or dining and can utilize its monthly credits, the Amex Gold is likely your winner. However, the Sapphire Preferred is a better fit if you prefer Ultimate Rewards points and want to earn bonus points on general travel expenses. Still, remember that it doesn't have to be a "this or that" decision; there's room for both of these cards in a well-developed points strategy.

Bottom line

The Sapphire Preferred and Amex Gold are two of the most valuable mid-tier cards on the market. Both can provide excellent value, and the question of one card versus another largely depends on how you derive value from your credit cards. However, they're one of our top card pairings , so it might be worth having both in your wallet.

Wells Fargo’s newest credit card -- the Wells Fargo Autograph Journey℠ Visa® Card* -- is open for online applicants. It’s a competitive offer that could give incumbent travel credit cards from  Chase ,  American Express  and  Capital One  a run for their money.

Wells Fargo does one thing better than its competitors: It offers a more flexible rewards program that doesn’t require booking travel in a portal to earn the highest rates.

Here’s why we think the Wells Fargo Autograph Journey could go toe-to-toe with some of  the best travel credit cards , plus four insider tips to help  you  decide if you should add it to your credit card lineup.

Before we dive into the hidden features and benefits, here’s an overview of what you can expect with the Autograph Journey:

  • Earn 60,000 welcome bonus rewards points after spending $4,000 in purchases within three months of account opening.
  • Earn unlimited 5x points on hotels, 4x points on airlines, 3x points on other travel and dining and 1x on other purchases.
  • Receive an annual statement credit with a $50 minimum airline purchase.
  • No foreign transaction fees.
  • Other benefits include trip cancellation and interruption insurance, lost luggage reimbursement, roadside dispatch and cell phone insurance.
  • $95 annual fee.

4 important details about the autograph journey .

Here’s a rundown of four facts we discovered about the Autograph Journey that you should know when deciding whether to apply.

1. You can transfer points with Wells Fargo point-based cards

The launch of the Autograph Journey also marks the first transferable points program from Wells Fargo, which joins other card issuers like Chase and Capital One, which have their own pooling programs .

Autograph Journey will be able to do a points transfer with the no-annual-fee Wells Fargo Autograph℠ Card . This is especially notable since the Wells Fargo Autograph℠ Card offers bonus rewards in different categories than the Autograph Journey.

For example, the Autograph card earns unlimited 3x points on restaurants, travel, gas stations, transit, popular streaming services and phone plans, plus 1x points on other purchases. So you can maximize your point earning across different categories, then transfer your points to your Autograph Journey account to access premium travel redemptions.

2. It offers more options for earning bonus miles on travel than some competitors

The Autograph Journey will offer more flexibility than many travel rewards cards when it comes to earning more points on travel purchases. For example, cardholders earn unlimited 5x points on hotels booked directly with hotel brands and 4x points on airfare booked with airlines.

This helps the card stand out from other popular travel credit cards that offer the most bonus points only if you book travel through their portals. For example, the Capital One Venture Rewards Credit Card * and the Capital One Venture X Rewards Credit Card * only offer the highest bonus rewards on travel booked through Capital One Travel. The Chase Sapphire Preferred® Card also offers its highest rate of 5x points on travel booked through Chase Ultimate Rewards, whereas other travel purchases earn 2x points.

Autograph Journey cardholders also earn a minimum of 3x points on other travel purchases, which could include rental cars, cruises and travel booked through online travel agencies like Expedia and Priceline.

3. The card may grow in value as more transfer partners join

The Autograph Journey Card will earn flexible travel rewards points that transfer to a selection of airline and hotel partners, similar to Amex Membership Rewards points or Chase Ultimate Rewards . While the list of transfer partners is limited, Wells Fargo stated in its initial press release that “more partners will continue to be added throughout the year.”

Points transfers could dramatically change the value proposition of the Autograph Journey, especially if new partners include domestic airlines and popular hotel loyalty programs.

Wells Fargo point transfers will be available to new cardholders starting on April 4. For now, Wells Fargo transfer partners include the following:

4. You may need to wait to apply

If you’ve applied for another Wells Fargo card in the last six months, you’ll likely have to wait a little longer before applying for the Autograph Journey.

Wells Fargo states in its terms and conditions, “If you opened a Wells Fargo Credit Card account within the last six months, then you may not qualify to open an additional Wells Fargo Credit Card account. We may also limit how many open Wells Fargo Credit Card accounts you have.”

So if you want the new Autograph Journey, you should steer clear of applying for other cards from Wells Fargo for now. If you’re approved and use the card responsibly for six months or longer, you can consider adding additional Wells Fargo credit cards to your portfolio.

The Ink Business Cash is a fantastic option for those looking to maximize the rewards they earn on business spending, especially since it doesn’t charge an annual fee. It’s one of the best Chase business cards available.

The card earns 5% cash back on the first $25,000 spent in combined purchases at office supply stores and on internet, cable and phone services each account anniversary year, 2% cash back on the first $25,000 spent in combined purchases at gas stations and restaurants each account anniversary year, and 1% cash back on all other purchases, making it a lucrative option for business owners who spend in these categories.

Now, Chase has put the card’s welcome offer more within reach. New cardholders will be able to earn $350 cash back after spending $3,000 on purchases in the first three months account opening. Plus, earn an additional $400 cash back after spending $6,000 in the first six months.

This replaces the previous offer, which was $750 cash back after spending $6,000 on purchases in the first three months of account opening. By making the offer tiered and offering a longer period of time to meet the full minimum spending requirement, it can be easier to attain at least a portion of that bonus offer.

Along with the revamped welcome offer, Chase is offering new cardholders the opportunity to receive a one-time 10% anniversary bonus of all eligible cash back earned in your first year.

To score this offer, you’ll need to have both an Ink Business Cash card and a Chase Business Checking account on your first card anniversary. You’ll then get a one-time 10% bonus on all of the eligible cash back you earned during your first year. In other words, if you earned $2,500 in cash-back rewards over the course of your first year with the card, you’ll score an additional $250.

This offer is only available to new card accounts opened between March 17, 2024 and November 17, 2024.

Finally, the Ink Business Cash will begin offering an automatic credit limit increase assessment every six months or less, which will allow cardholders greater access to credit if they need it.

Maximizing rewards with the Ink Business Cash

Although the Ink Business Cash earns cash-back rewards, cardholders may want to consider pairing it with the Ink Business Preferred® Credit Card * The information for the Ink Business Preferred® Credit Card has been collected independently by Blueprint. The card details on this page have not been reviewed or provided by the card issuer. , Chase Sapphire Preferred® Card or the Chase Sapphire Reserve® .

Doing so allows you to pool the rewards earned with your Ink Business Cash into transferable Chase Ultimate Rewards® . This opens you up to new ways to use the rewards you earn, including exciting travel transfer redemptions with hotel and airline partners.

Combining an Ink Business Cash with a Sapphire Reserve also allows you to redeem the rewards for 50% more when booking travel through Chase Travel℠, while combining the Ink Business Cash with the Chase Sapphire Preferred or Ink Business Preferred allows you to redeem your rewards for 25% more value.

The bottom line

The Ink Business Cash has launched a new welcome offer allowing business owners to earn cash back more quickly. Along with this, those who have both an Ink Business Cash card and a Chase Business Checking account on their first card anniversary will be eligible for a one-time 10% bonus of all eligible cash back earned in their first year. Those who have been considering opening an Ink Business Cash will want to do so now — especially heavy spenders who can make good use of that 10% bonus.
