Description.

Ghostery counts more than 100+ million downloads worldwide. Ghostery for Safari provides safe, fast, and clutter-free browsing for free. The browser extension upgrades your Safari browser and supplies full adblock functionality, stops trackers from accessing your personal data, and annoying cookie consent pop-ups. Ghostery has three main components: * Ad-Blocking - blocks all ads on websites you visit with your Safari browser, including Youtube and Facebook, helping you to focus only on the information important to you. * Anti-Tracking - stops trackers’ ability to collect your personal data, replacing it with random values and anonymizing your identity for data brokers. If you see a need to unblock individual trackers, we developed this option. The reasons are up to you! * Never-Consent - automatically removes intrusive cookie popups and expresses dissent to online tracking. This unequaled feature adds convenience to each website visit and acts like your privacy advocate towards content providers while using Safari. Ghostery delivers the online privacy protection our users have come to know and love while minimising the need for customisation and maintenance. As Ghostery is more than an ad-blocker, it comes with exceptional additional features, not found in any other ad-blocking extension: * Trackers information on any website your visit, informing you about the number of trackers, their type, and the company operating them. * Trackers Preview on search engine result pages - displaying tracker information even before you visit a page. You can safely make the choice to visit it, as Ghostery will stop trackers expecting you on the landing page. * WhoTracks.Me - Owning and operating the largest database of trackers allows Ghostery to update tracker information fast and reliably for all users. * Managing your adblock, antitracking, and cookie popup removal function in one click. Moreover, Ghostery is: * Open source * Supported by thousands of contributors worldwide * Free to use forever Ghostery’s core features are free for everyone. Take your experience to the next level and become a contributor to access extension themes, priority support, and historical statistics. Contributors also help Ghostery fund the development of the Privacy Suite and WhoTracks.Me, the largest database of trackers in the world. Ratings and Reviews

What gives.

It seems this extension needs updating. It doesn’t seem to work much. And even with the tool bar option check there isn’t an icon! Also can we have be able to manually update the lists like before?

Finally available for iOS!

I’ve used this browser extension since they made it before Apple allowed extensions for safari and always loved it! I waited patiently for the day Apple would allow extensions for Safari and now they’re here, and now Ghostery has come too! Ghostery was always one of the first extensions I installed on my web browsers for tracker blocking and it should be one of the first extensions you install into safari!

Effective, Light on Resouces, and Paid Version is Expensive

The paid version is pricey at $47 per year but there are no ads etc. It catches ads and trackers as other apps do but there seems to be no impact on page loading. The price is known as a "cotribution" but billing is through your Apple account. It is mostly a set it and forget program although web sites can be white listed. Bang for the buck though is Wipr at $4.00 I believe and no subscription.

The best ad blockers in 2024

Say goodbye to irritating ads, thanks to the best ad blockers

best ad blockers

Best in-browser ad blockers

Best ad-blocking apps, best ad-blocking mobile apps, other privacy-focused extensions and apps.

The best ad blockers are crucial tools on the modern internet. At times it feels like it's impossible to browse without being harassed by pop-ups, malvertising, tracker cookies and all sorts of horrible intrusive things. Even if the content you're viewing is above board, the ads you're serving could still put you at risk.

Thankfully there's no shortage of apps and browser extensions that can block ads and keep you safer when you're online. Blocking ads and all the other irrelevant stuff that you may encounter. Combined with the best antivirus software and the best VPNs , a good ad-blocker gives you a perfect arsenal of tools to offer as much protection as possible. Even the FBI recommends using an ad-blocker for protection.

The only thing you need to figure out is which ad-blocker is right for you. There are so many to choose from, and whether you are willing to live with the downsides. Most free sites rely on advertising revenue to survive, including Tom's Guide. But if you're happy with the trade-off, we've got a thorough list of the best ad blockers and privacy tools — with options for every browser and platform.

The best ad blockers you can get today

1. adblock plus (chrome, edge, firefox, opera, safari, android, ios).

AdBlock Plus (ABP) is among the most popular ad blockers, with extensions available for Firefox, Chrome, Safari, Edge and Opera. ABP features a quick setup, loading preset filter lists that allow users to quickly block most ads, as well as the option to filter malware and social media buttons.

Savvy users can chose additional block lists as well as set custom filters or whitelist their favorite sites to keep their ad revenue in the black. AdBlock Plus allows what it calls "non-intrusive advertising" through filters; that may irk some users, though this feature can be disabled in settings.

On Android, the AdBlock Browser provides a Firefox-based browser that blocks incoming advertising, while on iOS, the AdBlock Plus app integrates with the content blocker system to seamlessly block advertising on Safari with minimal setup.

Download AdBlock Plus: Firefox , Chrome , Safari , Opera , Edge

2. AdBlock (Chrome, Firefox, Safari, Edge)

AdBlock (no relation to AdBlock Plus) is the other best ad-blocking browser extension of note, available for users of Chrome, Firefox, Edge and Safari. AdBlock uses a series of filter lists to automatically block ad content coming from known ad servers and providers. Users can stick with the default block lists, subscribe to additional ones, or even create their own, as well as whitelist their favorite websites.

As one of the most downloaded Chrome and Safari extensions, AdBlock has the trust of many users worldwide.

Download AdBlock: Chrome , Firefox , Safari , Edge

3. uBlock Origin (Chrome, Firefox)

Ublock Origin is a browser-based ad blocker that focuses on simple, efficient blocking with a low resource overhead. The extension comes loaded with a number of filter lists for known advertising and malware sources, with extra filter lists available and the option to read and create your own custom filters from hosts files.

Download Ublock Origin: Chrome , Firefox

4. Poper Blocker (Chrome)

Rather than be an all-in one blocking solution, Poper Blocker (aka Pop Up Blocker For Chrome), is designed to complement other adblockers.

In this case, Poper Blocker focuses on blocking pop-ups, pop-unders, overlays, timed and scroll pop-ups, and other varieties that might slip past other ad-blocking extensions. Small notifications tell you when pop-ups are blocked. You also can view your blocking stats, but otherwise, you can generally just keep Poper Blocker running in the background with minimal impact alongside other adblocker extensions.

Download Poper Blocker: Chrome

5. Stands Fair AdBlocker (Chrome)

For a fast and light ad-blocking plugin, Chrome users can turn to Stands Fair AdBlocker. The extension does precisely what it promises, blocking ads and pop-ups from cluttering up your browser view while also preventing any tracking from going on.

Stand's Fair AdBlocker gives you control over the type of ads you can block, specifying everything from autoplay video ads, YouTube ads, expanding ads and more. It can even block Facebook ads if you want.

The "Fair" part of AdBlocker comes into play by giving you the ability to allow certain types of ads or even whitelist ad-supported websites you don't want to shortchange of badly needed revenue. This is one ad blocker that doesn't take a scorched earth approach to its stated purpose.

Download Stands Fair AdBlocker: Chrome

6. Ghostery (Chrome, Firefox, Opera, Safari, Edge)

Like the other extensions on our list of the best ad blockers, Ghostery can remove ads from webpages, so you can focus on content and browse more efficiently. But the real value in Ghostery lies in its privacy protection features. You can use Ghostery to view trackers, which lets you see who's trying to collect data on you. With Ghostery, you can also stop that tracking from taking place. If you really want to safeguard your privacy, you can turn to Ghostery's Enhanced Anti Tracking to anonymize your data.

Ghostery's a free download that offers basic web protection. More advanced protection starts at $4.99 a month and the $11.99 monthly tier comes with a built-in VPN. There are also versions of Ghostery that work with Android and iOS devices.

Download Ghostery: Chrome , Firefox , Opera , Safari , Edge

7. Adblocker for YouTube (Chrome, Firefox)

YouTube has gotten more aggressive with ads, so the makers of ad-blocking extensions have followed suit. Adblocker for YouTube is a Chrome extension that promises to automatically block YouTube ads, whether we're talking about the pre-roll ad appearing before your video or any text and banner ads that appear on the video itself.

If you prefer Firefox to Chrome, there's also an AdBlocker for YouTube extension that works on that browser. Same name, different developer apparently, but the functionality of stripping out video and display ads remains. This version works on Android devices too.

Download Adblocker for YouTube: Chrome , Firefox

1. AdGuard (Windows, Mac, Android, iOS)

Uses looking for a more robust experience can try out the subscription-based AdGuard, which provides desktop and mobile options to reduce the ads you see when surfing online.

AdGuard on Windows and Mac covers popular browsers, with highly configurable options for ads, content, and tracker blocking, as well as a parental controls module for restricting adult content. AdGuard for Android is a no-root ad-blocker that blocks advertising on apps and games, though you’ll have to install it from AdGuard’s site instead of through Google Play. AdGuard for iOS works with Safari to effectively filter ads on the default browser.

Download AdGuard: Windows , Mac , Android , iOS

2. AdLock ($33 per year)

AdLock avoids the browser-based route, instead opting to run as a separate program to be able to block not only browser-based ads, but also advertising in other programs like Skype or games.

The app runs in the background, using filters to block ads, popups, and autoplaying videos, speeding up loading times and applying Safe Browsing features to automatically block sites that are known to be unsafe.

For obvious reasons, the mobile version is unavailable on the Google Play Store, so you'll need to sideload the app if you want to get AdLock into your Android device. iOS users can download AdLock directly from Apple's App Store.

Download AdLock: Windows , Chrome ,  Android , Mac , iOS

3. Wipr (macOS, iOS; $1.99)

If you’re a Safari fan, Wipr may be the best ad blocker for both your Mac and iPhone. The app is available for both iOS and macOS — costing $1.99 from either Apple App Store — and it promises to work with Safari as well as apps that use Safari for displaying web pages.

You’ll find a full array of features with Wipr, which not only blocks apps and trackers, but cryptocurrency miners, EU cookie and GDPR notices and anything else that gets in your way of surfing the web. Its blocklist gets updated twice a week, and there’s little configuration; the idea is that you load Wipr and forget that it’s there while it does its job in the background.

With Wipr, pages should load faster in Safari, which will be particularly welcome if you’re surfing from an iPhone, where ads and trackers can bog down your browser’s speed.

Download Wipr: macOS , iOS

1. 1Blocker (iOS)

1Blocker was one of the first really good ad blockers on iOS when Apple opened up that functionality on iPhones and iPads; the apps has since been optimized for Safari.

The app is designed to make browsing faster and more secure by blocking ads, popups, trackers and other online cruft. Rather than blocking content of a downloaded page, 1Blocker works with Safari's content blocker API to tell the browser what to block in advance, saving time and resources.

1Blocker features more than 115,000 blocker rules, custom regional adblocking settings, and easy-to-use custom rules settings. The app is a free download, with premium features available as in-app purchases.

Download 1Blocker: iOS

2. Firefox Focus (Android, iOS)

Firefox Focus is another addition to Mozilla's family of browsers. This one's a privacy-oriented version of Firefox that bakes in ad-blocking and anti-tracking into a light and functional package. Firefox Focus blocks ads and speeds up browsing, while also working in privacy-friendly features like automatic history and cookie clearing.

Users can selectively block ads, analytics, content and social trackers with easy toggles, turn on a "stealth" mode, and set a default search engine.

Our look at the best Android browsers has more on the various flavors of Firefox.

Download Firefox Focus: Android , iOS

3. AdClear (Android, iOS)

AdClear — or AdClear Plus if you're searching for the iOS version — offers the kind of mobile ad blocking in browsers that similar apps provide. But AdClear takes it one step farther by also blocking ads in apps.

AdClear achieves this through a DNS changer feature that routes traffic through a VPN. AdClear doesn't catch everything in all apps, and in our experience, some apps ran a little slower. But this free download can put a stop to ads interrupting what you're trying to do whether in an app or a browser.

Download AdClear: Android , iOS

1. Decentraleyes (Chrome, Firefox)

Some times, blocking ads can also prevent websites fromn pulling needed resoruces and libraries from third-party sources, breaking web pages in the process. Decentraleyes tries to stop that from happening by acting as a local content delivery network emulator to serve up the files that websites need. By doing so, this extension can stop websites from sending out requests to the likes of Google Hosted Libraries.

Think of Decentraleyes as a complement to ad blockers. In fact, the extension specifically says it can work with uBlock Origin and AdBlock Plus, both of which we recommend up above.

Download Decentraleyes: Chrome , Firefox

2. Opera (Desktop, Android, iOS)

The Opera browser bakes in ad-blocking features into the browser without the need for an extra add-on, while also offering privacy-friendly tools such as an unlimited, built-in VPN service, incognito mode, fraud and malware warnings for suspicious links and pages, and more. In addition, you can further customize Opera's capabilities with a wide array of extensions.

Mobile users need not fret, as the Android version comes with just about everything the desktop version has but built for touch-screen interfaces. On iOS, the mobile version of Opera is listed in Apple's App Store as Opera Touch. (Incidentally, we've got a guide on how you can use Opera to block ads on the iPhone .)

Download Opera: Mac or Windows , Android , iOS

3. Privacy Badger (Chrome, Firefox, Opera)

The Electronic Frontier Foundation's Privacy Badger browser extension was born from the EFF's concerns about the business models of some privacy tools and ad blockers.

Privacy Badger functions similarly to extensions like AdBlock Plus (on which it was based), observing the various tracking tools that advertisers and other third parties might use to track your online activities and selectively blocking them from executing. Built-in learning algorithms adapt to the sites you visit and take any new tracking tools discovered into account.

While not explicitly an ad blocker, Privacy Badger does also block some advertising, depending on how aggressively the ads track you across websites.

Download Privacy Badger: Chrome , Firefox , Opera

4. Tor Browser (Desktop, Android)

The Tor network helps anonymize your internet activity by bouncing the data you send and receive through a distributed anonymous network of routers to foil a common online surveillance technique called traffic analysis, which can reveal the sites you visit or who you're communicating with.

The Tor Browser is an all-in-one package that includes everything you need to surf the net through the Tor network in an easy-to-install portable package. The package includes a modified version of Firefox with privacy aids such as NoScript baked in, and an automatic setup aid that makes it easy to connect to and create new Tor circuits.

On the desktop, you can grab a version of Tor Browser for Windows, macOS or Linux. There's also a version of Tor Browser for Android, which replaces the previous OrBot + OrFox combination recommended for browsing Tor on Android.

Download Tor Browser: Desktop , Android

5. Onion Browser (iOS)

iOS users aren’t left out when it comes to browsing the Tor anonymizer network, with the Onion Browser among the more popular options on Apple’s mobile OS.

Previously a premium app, Onion Browser has since moved to a donation model, opening up access to everyone who wants to download the app, without compromising security or features. The usual caveats apply: Browsing through Tor will slow down the web experience, and some features, like video streams and video files won’t work in order to preserve anonymity.

How to choose the best ad blocker for you

Many of the best ad blockers are available for free, either as extensions or as standalone apps, though a few, like AdLock, charge a fee. Determine if the free services provide enough ad-blocking to meet your needs or whether a paid app delivers more for your money. You should also figure out if a browser extension will take care of your ad-blocking needs or whether you should consider switching browsers to one with more built-in privacy features.

You can narrow down your choice in ad blockers by deciding specifically what you're looking to accomplish with such an app or extension. Do you just want to stop annoying pop-up ads from appearing or do you want the full range of services, including privacy features and an end to ad-tracking? Grab the ad blocker that ticks off all the boxes on your wishlist.

Some ad blockers, such as AdBlock Plus include filters and the ability to let in non-obtrusive advertising. Others, like AdBlocker Ultimate, take a more aggressive approach. Find out which one best suits your needs and comfort level.

As we noted at the outset, there's also an ethical component to ad blockers. Do you feel comfortable keeping ad revenue out of the hands of sites you enjoy and use for free? As good as the best ad blockers are, that's still a trade-off you need to consider when deciding whether to install one as a browser extension or as a standalone app.

Frequently Asked Questions

How does ghostery work.

Ghostery is comprised of privacy focused products known as the Ghostery Privacy Suite. How Ghostery works specifically is dependent on which product is being used.

The Ghostery Tracker & Ad Blocker browser extension is our original product. It is a piece of software that extends the functionality of a web browser on a desktop computer. Ghostery monitors all the different web servers that are being called from a particular web page and matches them with a library of data collection tools (trackers). If it finds a match, Ghostery shows that tracker in the list in the pop-up information bubble or control panel. If you’ve configured Ghostery to block communication with one or more of these companies, it interrupts the call from leaving the browser.

This is different than opting-out or blocking cookies within the browser because those strategies still allow the browser to communicate with the web server (they just try to alter the communication or the response). When blocking is enabled, Ghostery never allows the communication in the first place.

Does Ghostery share user data with other companies?

No. Ghostery does not share collected data of any kind with third parties.

Transparency and integrity are important to us. For in-depth information, please consult our Privacy Policy . Additionally we're open source and you may view the Ghostery source code on Github .

If you have any questions or concerns, please reach out to us at [email protected] .

How do I find out which company the tracker belongs to?

From within the Ghostery control panel, you can click any tracker listed to reveal a short description of who provides it. You can then view more details about this tracker and what it collects by clicking the “Continue to full tracker profile” link. This link leads you to in-depth information about the specific tracker or company on WhoTracks.Me , world’s largest database of trackers owned and operated by Ghostery.

How does Ghostery make money?

Ghostery receives monthly or yearly donations from users enrolled in the Contributor program. Read here how you can Become a Contributor.

How is using the browser extension different from blocking cookies?

Ghostery differs from simply “blocking cookies” because that still allows the browser (with your IP address) to communicate with the web server — it just prevents cookies from being placed on your machine. The requests are still happening, and data about you is still being transmitted. Ghostery completely intercepts those requests and never allows the communication to happen in the first place.

How many trackers does Ghostery have in its library?

Ghostery has a proprietary library of over 5000 trackers from over 3000 companies that we update continually. You can find the monthly updated database at WhoTracks.Me , an entity owned and operated by Ghostery.

Additionally, Ghostery’s Ad-Blocking module uses popular open-source filter lists which include thousands more trackers.

If I opted in to share my data with the Ghostery Tracker & Ad Blocker extension, is that data connected with my account?

No. Data shared with Ghostery is strictly non-personal and not connected with user accounts in any way. To see exactly what non-personal data is shared, please consult our Privacy Policy.

Furthermore no account needs to be created to use the Ghostery Tracker & Ad Blocker Browser Extension ; it is simply an option to make things more convenient for the user as for example the ability to sync settings between devices.

Is Ghostery really free?

Yes the core features of Ghostery are and will always be free. Click here to learn more.

What are the password requirements when setting up a Ghostery account?

Your password must be between 8 and 50 characters and only contain letters, numbers and/or the following symbols: ! @ # $ % ^ & * = + ( ) <> { } [ \ ] ; : , . / ?

What data is collected and how is it used when I create an account?

If you choose to create a user account, we will collect your name and email address. Usage of this data is limited to: (i) syncing your settings across our products, (ii) serving as your login credentials to access certain features of the Ghostery Privacy Suite, (iii) communicating directly to you through your email address to give you information about our products, updates and helping spread awareness on privacy within the community through our biweekly Privacy Digest .

Note that no account needs to be created to use Ghostery Tracker & Ad Blocker Browser Extension ; it is simply an option to make things more convenient for the user.

For more information please consult our Privacy Policy.

What is WhoTracks.Me (formerly Human-Web)?

WhoTracks.Me , owned and operated by Ghostery, is an integral part of Ghostery's AI anti-tracking technology. It is a comprehensive global resource on trackers, bringing transparency to web tracking. If you'd like to learn more about WhoTracks.Me, please check out the source code in our open-source Github repository.

Who is Evidon?

Now owned by and named after Crownpeak, Evidon, Inc. was a New York City-based tech company that provides Digital Governance solutions for Business. The Ghostery brand and products were owned by Evidon, Inc. from 2009 to 2017 (during which time it was called Ghostery, Inc.) before they were acquired by Cliqz GmbH in 2017 and operates as Ghostery GmbH since then.

Ghostery does not sell or otherwise share data of any kind with Crownpeak.

Tracker & Ad Blocker

Does the ghostery tracker & ad blocker extension work in any browser.

Ghostery is supported in Firefox, Chrome, Safari, Opera, and Edge. Each browser extension must be downloaded and installed separately.

The Ghostery Tracker & Ad Blocker Browser Extension is available for Tor Browser, Yandex, and Brave, however because we do not officially support these browsers, you may encounter specific issues relating to these browsers.

How can I manage trackers while on a site?

To manage trackers, tap on Ghosty in the toolbar. You will see two lists – one showing all trackers on your current site and one showing all trackers in general (global).

To restrict or allow a tracker on your current site only, choose the appropriate tab, find the tracker and choose “restrict” or “allow.” Note  that choosing “block” will block the tracker across all sites, and choosing “Unblock” will allow it across all sites. You may also bulk block or unblock all trackers, or by tracker category.

What are the 3 symbols in the Ghostery panel?

The Ghostery Tracker & Ad Blocker includes 3 features designed to strengthen privacy, block ads, and remove intrusive cookie consent pop-ups.

Ad-Blocking : The ad blocking feature uses community managed ad blocking lists to eliminate ads as you browse the web. This complements Ghostery's tracker blocking and anti-tracking.  It catches and eliminates ads from a filter list and does not require any user-generated data.

Anti-Tracking : The Anti-Tracking feature is a heuristic approach to real-time, algorithmic tracking protection. Like Ghostery's Ad-blocking, it monitors all third-party requests. However, instead of simply blocking those requests, it analyzes them for personally identifiable information and then strips out that information before the request is sent. Anti-Tracking supplements Ghostery's block-list approach by catching anything that might have been missed. Therefore, even if trackers are allowed to execute, you can feel safe knowing that all personal information has been anonymized in the request.

Never-Consent:  Ghostery’s new feature ‘Never-Consent’ selects optimal privacy settings automatically which stops websites from asking you to accept cookies via intrusive cookie consent pop-ups. It also sends important messages to website owners telling them that you don’t want to be tracked.‍

What is Anti-Tracking?

The Anti-Tracking feature is a heuristic approach to real-time, algorithmic tracking protection.

What is Tracker Cloaking Protection?

Tracker Cloaking Protection is an advanced privacy setting offered in Ghostery Private Browser. Some trackers use a technique called CNAME cloaking where they pretend to be first-party code by mimicking legitimate subdomains of the websites they are present on, thereby avoiding detection as a third-party technology. The Ghostery Private Browser has a technology to unmask and block these cloaked trackers.

This technology works in Gecko based browsers only like Firefox and Ghostery Private Browser.

Private Browsers

What is ghost mode window.

Users can open a Ghost Mode Window on desktop versions of Ghostery Private Browser. This is similar to what other browsers call Private Browsing Windows or Incognito Mode.

While browsing in Ghost Mode Windows, Ghostery does not store the following data on your device:

  • History: Visited pages will not be saved to the computer’s history and thus cannot be found via the library or the history results in the search.
  • Cookies: Cookies store various information, such as page settings, logins, and data that is used for plugins.
  • Form fields and search box entries: Text entered into text boxes or search functions on websites is forgotten instantly.
  • Passwords: Newly entered passwords will not be remembered.
  • Download list: You can download and save files just like in normal browsing mode. However, files downloaded will not show in the downloads menu.
  • Temporary data: Temporary data and data required for offline usage cannot be saved.

What is Ghost Tab?

With mobile versions of Ghostery Private Browser (iOS/iPadOS/Android), users can open a Ghost Tab . This is similar to what other browsers call Private Browsing Windows or Incognito Mode.

While browsing in a Ghost Tab, Ghostery does not store the following data on your device:

What is Automatic Ghost Tab Mode?

Adult content is opened in Automatic Ghost Tab Mode on Ghostery Private Browser for iOS/iPadOS. The browser will prevent adult sites from being stored in your search history.

Does Ghostery work on mobile devices?

The Ghostery Private Browser fully loaded with the Ghostery Privacy Suite is a stand-alone app for iPhones, iPads, and Android. The Ghostery Browser Extension works with the mobile version of Safari on iPhones & iPads, as well as the mobile version of Firefox on Android phones.

The Ghostery Private Browser for Android is compatible for Android Version 8.0 and later.

‍The Ghostery Private Browser for iOS is compatible for iOS/iPadOS Version 12.0 and later.

What advantages does Ghostery offer when compared to other mobile browsers?

The Ghostery Private Browser contains an integrated quick search that allows you to go directly to your destination without any detours. In addition, we do not collect any personal data unlike other search engines. Thus, by using Ghostery you are protecting your online privacy.

We also provide you with our anti-tracking technology which helps to keep your data safe. This technology avoids your data being tracked by third party trackers. This is done by altering strings which are unique to your browser. It protects you from usual tracking methods like canvas fingerprinting.

What distinguishes the Ghostery Private Browser from other browsers?

The Ghostery Private Browser is significantly more private than its competitors. This is because, in addition to hosting the typical features of a browser, our browser has Ghostery’s signature privacy protection technologies baked into it.

Like many browsers, we offer a private browsing mode (Ghost mode) and a private search engine. On top of that, Ghostery Private Browser employs technology that actively shields your data from trackers. Those two signature technologies of Ghostery are known as (1) tracker-blocking, which stops trackers from being planted on the sites you visit, and (2) anti-tracking, our supplemental capability, which anonymizes your personally identifiable information should any trackers get through.

How to Block Ads on Your iPhone and iPad

Block Ads on Your iPhone and iPad

If you’re like most people, you probably use your iPhone and iPad to browse the web, watch videos, play games, and check social media. These activities expose you to a barrage of annoying and intrusive ads that ruin your online experience.

Not only do ads clutter your screen and distract you from the content you want to see, but they also slow down your device, consume your data, and compromise your privacy. That’s why you need a powerful solution to block ads on your iPhone and iPad: Ghostery .

Ghostery is a trusted name in online privacy and security, with over 100+ million downloads worldwide. Ghostery offers a range of products to help you take control of your digital life, including a private search engine and an ad blocker extension .

Why Should You Block Ads on Your iPhone and iPad?

Ads are not only annoying, but they also have a negative impact on your device performance, data usage, and privacy.

Here’s a few reasons why you should block ads on your iPhone and iPad:

  • Ads slow down your device. Ads are often loaded with scripts, images, videos, and animations that consume your device’s resources and make web pages load slower. This can affect your battery life, memory, and overall performance.
  • Ads use up your data. Ads can consume a significant amount of your data plan, especially if they are video or audio ads. This can cost you money and limit your access to other online services.
  • Ads invade your privacy. Ads are often used to track your online behavior, preferences, location, and personal information. This data is then sold to third parties or used to target you with more ads. This can expose you to identity theft, fraud, malware, and other online threats.

By blocking ads on your iPhone and iPad, you can avoid these problems and enjoy the following benefits:

  • Improved device performance. By blocking ads, you can free up your device’s resources and make web pages load faster. This can improve your battery life, memory, and overall performance.
  • Reduced data usage. By blocking ads, you can save your data plan and avoid extra charges. This can also help you access other online services faster and more reliably.
  • Enhanced privacy. By blocking ads, you can prevent advertisers from tracking your online activity and collecting your personal data.

The 7 best free Safari extensions for the Mac

Jackie Dove

Browser extensions add specific capabilities to Safari by reading and modifying web content to promote an integrated browsing experience that’s tailored to your needs. There are two places to find Apple-approved Safari extensions: The App Store and the Safari Extensions Gallery webpage .

With Safari 12 on macOS Mojave and iOS 12, Apple revised the way its native web browser operates with extensions. Whereas in the past, you could easily download an extension from a developer, today you must download and install a Mac app or an Apple approved extension from the Safari Extensions Gallery page. The gallery is still operative for browser versions as far back as version 9, and is still considered a safe way to download and install Safari extensions. Regardless of the browser version, all apps from the App Store and Gallery page can update automatically.

Safari 12 blocks legacy extensions from third-party sources, and is now in the process of deprecating its own Extensions Gallery. It quit accepting new Gallery extension submissions at the end of 2018, accelerating a transition away from the Gallery in favor of the App Store. Many extensions continue to work just fine in Mohave’s latest browser.

Right now, there’s not much to the browser extension section of the App Store, which you can access via the Safari > Safari Extensions menu. Of the 66 App extensions currently available, only 27 are free. Another half dozen are 99 cents and the rest range in price to $19.99. Here are the best of the free extensions from both sources.

Ghostery Lite

ghostry lite mac safari

Ghostry Lite Safari extension

Ghostery Lite is the free version of Ghostery that blocks ads and trackers that transmit and receive user information. Using the browser’s own Content Blocker API, the extension discards content, cookies, and tracking scripts to cut down on the information Safari shares with other websites, without sacrificing performance.

You can customize Ghostery from the toolbar button by choosing either the default setting or individually blocking some ads while leaving others for sites you want to support. You can also use the extension to control analytics, audio or video players, adult content and more.

translate safari extension mac

Translate Safari extension

When you come across multi-lingual web content, it’s distracting not to be able to read it in context. Translate lets you translate pages from any language to any other language via either the Microsoft or Google Translate function. You can also choose from a host of other translation services via the toolbar button, contextual menu, or keyboard shortcut. nWithin the settings you can also choose whether to translate pages automatically or manually and choose to set up a preferred service region.

An updated Mac App Store version called TranslateMe costs $9.99.

zoom sfari extension

Zoom Safari extension

Sometimes webpage content is just too small (or large). You can fix such issues with Zoom , a simple extension that lets you adjust the scale of content on any webpage.

Just invoke the app from the toolbar, and you get a slider that spans from 0 to 400 percent, making any size text or images easier to see in a full page context. You can adjust sizes with the slider or the plus or minus buttons. A Default button immediately reverts the page to 100 percent.

TrafficLight

trafficlight mac safari

The web often seems like a giant mirror looking inward at every user, spying and recording most activities for both commercial and nefarious purposes. Bitdefender, the company behind the popular anti-virus program of the same name, offers the TrafficLight Safari extension as an advanced malware protection filter that guards your browsing experience against phishing attacks. It finds hidden trackers that follow and analyze your browsing activity, while a safe search feature specifically monitors search results to warn users about malware and fraudulent websites.

hoversee mac safari

HoverSee Safari extension

Content scaling can be an issue on some websites, with some images especially difficult to decipher. HoverSee enlarges all images and image-based video links as you hover your mouse over them and shows any available descriptions alongside the preview.

It works especially well on thumbnail images like Facebook and Twitter, links to image galleries, and direct image links. If you hover on YouTube, it will automatically play your video in its magnified mode. You can adjust visual display delay, minimum and maximum zoom, white list or black list certain sites, use a hot key to control zoom on specific images, autoplay or mute videos and more.

duckduckgo safari mac

DuckDuckGo Safari extension

Even if you’re not already using DuckDuckGo as your default search engine, you can still take advantage of the search engine’s privacy and security features with this Safari extension. The extension brings up a search interface that lets you search without storing your search history or following you around the web. Just click the icon in the toolbar to get the search box, or invoke it from the right-click contextual menu.

shortly mac safari

Shortly Safari extension

When you want to include a URL in an email or social media post, it helps to chop long ones into short bits-and that’s where Shortly come in. You can choose your preferred service of Google, Bitly, TinyURL or Custom Endpoint. Just enable the extension in the Safari Preferences, and then click the browser toolbar button or set up a hot key to automatically shorten any URL. Your trim URL appears ready to copy and paste either as a popover or alert window.

Tips & Tricks

Troubleshooting, ghostery slowing down safari performance here’s a fix.

Fix Slow Safari Ghostery performance

Ghostery is a popular content blocker that aims to block annoyances, trackers, pop-ups, ads, and other web clutter. When implemented properly, it often even helps to speed up Safari performance by preventing the loading of a bunch of unnecessary stuff on a webpage.

But after updating Ghostery recently on a Mac, I noticed a serious performance hit to Safari browsing, and suddenly Safari was working at a snails pace. It was as if my speedy M1 Mac with the latest macOS Monterey build had become an old beige box Pentium II struggling to run a bloated Internet Explorer on Windows XP – the CPU was pegged and grinding to a halt when any webpage was loading, the beachball from unresponsive pages , and searching the web was suddenly uselessly slow – something was clearly amiss.

Safari problems from Ghostery content blocker plugin

The culprit? Some new settings in Ghostery that appeared after updating the extension. Turning those off immediately returned performance to where it should be in Safari with a functional content blocker.

How to Fix Slow Ghostery Performance in Safari for Mac

Disabling some useless and redundant ‘features’ in the Ghostery content blocker resolved the performance issue in Safari, here’s where:

  • Open Safari if you haven’t done so yet, and go to Preferences
  • Go to “Extensions”
  • Choose ‘Ghostery’
  • Select Ghostery Preferences
  • Check the box to “Disable Tracker Wheel in browser toolbar”
  • Uncheck the box for “Show Trackers Preview next to search results”

Change Ghostery settings to fix slow Safari performance

  • Close out of Ghostery Preferences

Quit and relaunch Safari.*

The Tracker Wheel seems to serve no functional purpose other than to let you know how many trackers exist on a website, something Safari already does with Privacy Report. Redundant feature, slow performance, unnecessary.

The Trackers Preview injects the Tracker Wheel into search results, so when you’re googling or DuckDuckGoing (Ducking? Going?), the search result pages are forced to load this extraneous data to show next to the URL. This is completely unnecessary and not particularly helpful, since it’s unlikely anyone is going to change what they’re looking for based on some number of trackers that are being blocked anyway, and the Privacy Report feature of Safari will inform you of this data as well. This particular Ghostery feature makes search results very slow, and turning it off will help to speed things up again.

Once you disable both of those features in Ghostery settings you will find the performance of Safari speeds back up to what you would expect when using content blockers, rather than grinding to a sluggish crawl which defeats their purpose if you’re using them to boost browsing performance.

Optionally, you could always disable the extension which also immediately returns performance to the Safari browser.

Or, you could remove it completely from Safari, and then install a new extension of a content blocker that doesn’t have this particular feature and related performance hit, but that’s up to you. Any content blocker is going to require customization of settings to suit your browsing needs anyway. (And by the way, if you do use a content blocker, please whitelist osxdaily.com since we are supported by advertising, as are many other sites.)

This was focused obviously on Ghostery in Safari on Mac, but the Ghostery plugin is available as a content blocker on iPhone and iPad too, so you may have the same results on those devices if you use Ghostery on iOS and iPadOS and feel the Safari browser has gotten strangely slow. Let us know your own experiences in the comments.

Why this stuff is enabled by default in Ghostery nowadays is a mystery, especially given the hit to browser performance. Turn it all off, and enjoy Ghostery again.*

Even if you don’t use Ghostery, but use other Safari extensions, if you updated them recently and then discover that performance of your browser is now terrible, it’s a good idea to start poking around in your Safari extensions settings and preferences, or try disabling the extensions in question as you troubleshoot the problem.

* Note : If you have a lot of open browser tabs and windows, you may find that any change to Ghostery settings or to site-specific settings and adjustments (to disable content blockers for a particular site, for example) causes Safari performance to immediately suffer and remain miserably bad until the browser is quit and re-open. If you experience this, performance will stay poor until you relaunch Safari. And if you make any adjustment to another site and to deny/allow content blockers for it, performance will suffer yet again until the browser is relaunched, again. This did not used to be an issue with prior versions of Ghostery, but it appears to be a replicable issue on any modern Mac with Safari with a bunch of tabs open and the latest Ghostery extension versions. Perhaps this is a bug (in Safari, or the extension itself) that will be worked out eventually, as a similar performance hit was replicated with another similar content blocker extension in a busy Safari browser instance on MacOS.

Not a fan of extensions personally, but Ghostery seems to be a pretty popular extension. I know myself even with no extensions Safari can have trouble loading certain web sites. I almost feel like this is a issue between Safari and the web sites with compatibility. Extensions can exacerbate issues with web sites and browsers especially how Safari does extensions.

Ghostery made Safari totally slow and unusable for me, tried this fix and it didn’t help. I deleted it, now using the Brave browser instead.

I don’t have any of those settings. I am using Safari 14.1.2 on Mojave. Ghostery Lite is broken up into several parts, none of which shows what you describe.

Ghostery ruined Safari for me, I used it for years but then after a Safari update and Fhostery update it became unusable.

Strange Glow Over Moscow Skies Triggers Panic as Explosions Reported

B right flashes lit up the night sky in southern Moscow in the early hours of Thursday morning, new footage appears to show, following reports of an explosion at an electrical substation on the outskirts of the city.

Video snippets circulating on Russian-language Telegram channels show a series of flashes on the horizon of a cloudy night sky, momentarily turning the sky a number of different colors. In a clip shared by Russian outlet MSK1.ru, smoke can be seen rising from a building during the flashes lighting up the scene.

Newsweek was unable to independently verify the details of the video clips, including when and where it was filmed. The Russian Ministry of Emergency situations has been contacted via email.

Several Russian Telegram accounts said early on Thursday that residents of southern Moscow reported an explosion and a fire breaking out at an electrical substation in the Leninsky district, southeast of central Moscow.

Local authorities in the Leninsky district told Russian outlet RBC that the explosion had happened in the village of Molokovo. "All vital facilities are operating as normal," Leninsky district officials told the outlet.

The incident at the substation in Molokovo took place just before 2 a.m. local time, MSK1.ru reported.

Messages published by the ASTRA Telegram account, run by independent Russian journalists, appear to show residents close to the substation panicking as they question the bright flashes in the sky. One local resident describes seeing the bright light before losing access to electricity, with another calling the incident a "nightmare."

More than 10 villages and towns in the southeast of Moscow lost access to electricity, the ASTRA Telegram account also reported. The town of Lytkarino to the southeast of Moscow, lost electricity, wrote the eastern European-based independent outlet, Meduza.

Outages were reported in the southern Domodedovo area of the city, according to another Russian outlet, as well as power failures in western Moscow. Electricity was then restored to the areas, the Strana.ua outlet reported.

The cause of the reported explosion is not known. A Telegram account aggregating news for the Lytkarino area described the incident as "an ordinary accident at a substation."

The MSK1.ru outlet quoted a local resident who speculated that a drone may have been responsible for the explosion, but no other Russian source reported this as a possible cause.

Ukraine has repeatedly targeted Moscow with long-range aerial drones in recent months, including a dramatic wave of strikes in late May.

On Sunday, Moscow Mayor Sergei Sobyanin said the region's air defense systems had intercepted an aerial drone over the city of Elektrostal, to the east of Moscow. No damage or casualties were reported, he said.

The previous day, Russian air defenses detected and shot down another drone flying over the Bogorodsky district, northeast of central Moscow, Sobyanin said.

There is currently no evidence that an aerial drone was responsible for the reported overnight explosion at the electrical substation in southern Moscow.
