Surfside Beach Is the Ultimate Destination for Families

This all-ages South Carolina destination is the perfect place to make memories that will last a lifetime.

visit surfside beach sc

While Myrtle Beach has long been the main attraction on South Carolina's Grand Strand , it's far from the only destination to explore on the famous 60-mile stretch of coastline. There are 13 other distinct communities waiting to be discovered and enjoyed—including one of our favorites, Surfside Beach. Fifteen minutes down the road from Myrtle Beach, Surfside is Myrtle's smaller, quieter, more laidback little sister. Away from the hustle and bustle of crowded beachfront boardwalks, amusement parks, and giant Ferris Wheels, Surfside provides a welcome reprieve from the tourist-packed arcades, shops, and restaurants we've come to love Myrtle Beach for.

Pegged as "The Family Beach," Surfside certainly lives up to its name. With two miles of pristine coastline that are cleaned daily and monitored by lifeguards to keep everyone safe, you can feel comfortable bringing the whole crew for a day of family fun. Here's how to plan the ultimate all-ages vacation there.

What to Do in Surfside Beach

Surfside is a small place. With only two square miles to navigate and fewer than 5,000 locals, its's exactly the type of safe, community-focused town you'll love letting your kids loose in. Surfside's white-sand beaches feature 36 access points, which means that no matter where you choose to stay, you'll never be far from the sand and shore. All you have to do is kick off your flip-flops and race into the waves! The town is also home to seven parks and is well on its way to reopening the iconic 800-foot Surfside Pier, which was damaged by Hurricane Matthew in 2016. If you've got older kids, they'll love the thrill-seeking adventure of a jet ski ride or parasail flight with Shoreline Watersports .

Outside of normal beach activities like swimming, fishing, kayaking, and boating, Surfside is also known for several inland attractions. Wild Water & Wheels is a family-favorite waterpark that offers go-karts and mini golf in addition to 30-plus rides and slides. If the thrill of the hunt is your idea of fun, Surfside is good for more than just beachcombing and shell collecting. Hudson's Surfside Flea Market , the area's largest and oldest open-air flea market, is owned by the third generation of its original owners. The 70,000-square-foot covered market features 400 vendor spaces selling everything from antiques and golf equipment to apparel and one-of-a-kind handmade goods.

Where to Eat in Surfside Beach

For the best bagels on the Grand Strand, head to Benjamin's , a combination bakery, café, and coffee roaster that's famous for its New York-style bagels that come in 15 different flavors. If you're especially hungry, skip the cream cheese and turn your bagel into a breakfast sandwich. The café is also open for lunch, serving sandwiches on house-made bread alongside homemade bagel chips. Crabby Mike's isn't afraid of a theme. The sea-life decorated restaurant is known for its massive buffet of fresh seafood including Alaskan snow crab legs, shrimp, mussels, crawfish, scallops, clams, several types of fish, and more. More casual eats can be found at Joey Doggs, where you can get no-nonsense burgers, hot dogs, and fresh-cut fries near a family campground.

Due to the influx of Northeasterners who regularly visit or have relocated to the Grand Strand, the area has a strong Italian population. The influence is evident in Surfside's dining scene, which features several Italian restaurants worth writing home about. Find authentic Italian and Sicilian dishes like Clams Oreganata and Zuppa Di Pesce in a cozy, family-oriented environment at Valentino Original Italian Restaurant . If you're heading in with the kids, take advantage of early bird specials, served everyday from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. For a parent's night out, head to Malibu of Surfside for delicious Italian cuisine in a romantic setting.

Where to Stay in Surfside Beach

For single families, the Surfside Beach Oceanfront Hotel is a great option. The newly renovated hotel offers rooms and suites, all with sweeping views of the Atlantic Ocean and easy access to the beach below. If you're toting a crew—kids, aunts and uncles, cousins, grandparents, you name it—a vacation home is certainly the route to go. Check Airbnb, Vrbo, or local rental companies like Surfside Realty or Dunes Realty to find a home suited to your family's unique needs.

We won't be surprised when that weeklong rental turns into a real estate inquiry. After all, there's no place like home. And there's really no place like a beach home.

“Great place to visit!” Review of Surfside Beach

View of Surfside Pier

Surfside beach in SC is a wonderful place to spend a family vacation. We normally stay in Myrtle Beach but changed things up this year as we were taking more people and needed to rent a house. The beaches were very clean and were surprisingly not very crowded. There were some wonderful small restaurants within walking distance and the area attractions both in Surfside and Myrtle beach were a very short drive away. Overall, our family very much enjoyed our trip to Surfside Beach and will probably be going back soon!

visit surfside beach sc

For the past 4 years me and my family have stayed in Surfside Beach as a family vacation. We love the location because it is very quiet and family oriented with the advantages of being just minutes from Myrtle Beach. We can drive virtually anywhere within the Myrtle Beach area within 15 minutes and still get to go back to our beach front condo for a quiet and peaceful nights rest. It doesn't matter what public place you visit in Surfside, the people are always beaming with southern hospitality. The beach is just as beautiful without being as packed as Myrtle Beach, which is comforting when keeping track of toddlers! I would absolutely suggest that anyone considering a family trip to Myrtle Beach, consider staying in Surfside Beach! I know I will continue to go every year!

visit surfside beach sc

I spent a week in Surfside Beach, a block from the beach in a rental house the last full week of July 2007. The house was incredible! My soon-to-be in-laws had set up the rental ahead of time through Dunes Realty - and the rates were exceedingly fair. We had a great place with a smallish pool, but ample bedrooms - each with a private bath. That is crucial on a family vacation in a rental house! The beach was lovely, if not a bit too hot for my taste. But it was very clean and that was a nice surprise for such a busy, public beach. The downside? Anything having to do with getting in a car and driving anywhere that included getting on the main strip (hwy 17). The traffic there is a total nightmare, so if you don't have to drive, don't. Luckily, the people I was with had vacationed in Myrtle before, and so we knew a few good places to go eat. If you want really good, affordable, authentic Italian, the only choice is Angelo's. The buffet was a little disappointing to me (the Italians I was with loved it though), but the few who ordered from the menu looked like their meals were wonderful. The cannolis were fresh and delicious! At all costs avoid the 100+ item buffets. We had heard that the place to go for great seafood was this place right up Hwy 17 - Crabby Mike's. It was horrid. We waited for over an hour and a half because the hostess forgot she had given us a buzzer and did not write the number down. The manager then made up some story that we never said we were staying and we never took a buzzer - and when we handed it to him as proof, he very accusingly asked "Where did you get that?". There were 13 of us together, and I can understand a longer wait, however, we were treated very poorly. Then there was the food, which was mediocre at best. "Seafood buffets" should not include imitation Krab, nor should the "mahi" taste identical to the "salmon". Yes, there were fresh crab legs, all you could eat, however, it was an upcharge to the less than desirable buffet and not worth the price of the buffet. There is not a lot of nightlife for the young of age crowd, unless you wanted to either take a $60 cab ride into Myrtle, or coax a member of your party to remain sober and take you. We opted one night to drive further south to a small Irish place to play pool and darts that was full of locals. Not bad, actually. The ones who golfed really enjoyed the courses they played, although they did mention that the 7 or 8 am tee times were the ONLY ones they would consider in the future due to the intense heat and humidity. There are loads of mini-golf places, some much nicer than others. The problem with that is, again, having to get on Hwy 17. A round of mini-golf took us about 1 1/2 hours at night to play due to the 7 million other people also golfing there. It was a blast, but I was thirsty and tired at the end. I think the next time we go we will definitely rent again, but perhaps this time we will try to pick a week that is not so crowded, and do more research with the locals in terms of places to go out to eat, or possibly getting fresh seafood at the docks or farmers' market and cook it at home.

We just came home from a 10 day stay at Surfside Beach. It's close to Myrtle Beach. The home we rented was wonderful. The beach was fantastic!!!! The only problem was if you didn't go to the beach the only thing to to in the area was shop or play miniture golf. Alot of the attractions were so expensive that it was difficult to have a good time and not spend a fortune. We always go to Tennesse and will go there next year. Only thing great is the Beach in Myrtle Beach

I read these reviews of people unhappy at Surfside Beach, well we had a GREAT time. My entire family rented a house on the beach for my parents 50th wedding anniversary. There were 4 families in one house. We rented from ----------------------------- and were very pleased with the house, the location everything. We loved the area, decide Myrtle Beach is just too crowded, so Surfside was a wonderful choice for us. We plan on possibly returning next year. So for those of you unhappy with hotels, consider a house rental!!

Once reopened, you can go sightseeing and fishing or soak in scenic views and enjoy the sunset. The up-and-coming new structure will span 814 feet in length and stand 25 feet tall, making it 9 feet taller than its predecessor.

The new Surfside Pier will also prioritize accessibility, featuring amenities, including elevators and ramps, to ensure visitors of all abilities can fully enjoy it.

Surfside Beach showing a sunset, a coastal town and a sandy beach

Visit Surfside Beach

Surfside Beach is a town known for its family activities and serene sandy beaches. Picturesque golf courses offer idyllic escapes, while theaters and other culture hubs keep adults and kids entertained. Enjoy the hot and sunny summer weather on this coastal retreat.

The town’s parks have courts for tennis, bocce and shuffleboard, a game involving discs and a cue stick. Bring your children to see the namesake stretch of sand, Surfside Beach, which is cleaned daily and has lifeguards during the summer. Stroll near the wooden Surfside Beach Pier and photograph the town and the water at sunrise or sunset through the pier’s supporting pillars.

Go swimming with your little ones in the Atlantic Ocean or take them to the Wild Water & Wheels water park. Have fun with the range of slides, a lazy river and a wave pool, as well as a racing track and a mini-golf course. For real golf, practice your swing at the Tupelo Bay Golf Center, which has an 18-hole executive course and a 9-hole par-3 course, as well as other fun activities such as soccer golf and disc golf.

On rare rainy days, the town provides myriad sheltered options. Search for gems among the antiques, jewelry and clothing in Hudson's Surfside Flea Market, which has been operating since 1975. Visit the 400 open-air stalls in the 70,000-square-foot (6,500-square-meter) covered space.

The town is a little southwest along the Atlantic Coast from Myrtle Beach, in the southeastern part of South Carolina. Drive for 8 miles (13 kilometers) from Myrtle Beach International Airport to get here in less than 20 minutes. While you’re in the area, consider visiting nearby communities such as Garden City, Murrells Inlet and Burgess.

Surfside Beach is a fun setting for an ideal family vacation.

Things to do

Waccamaw river nature and wildlife tour, murder mystery dinner show in myrtle beach, myrtle beach: legends in concert live tribute show ticket, reviews of surfside beach, 2/5 - disappointing.

I would not pay the price they are asking for the room we got.

5/5 - Excellent

The security of the hotel really impressed me especially since I travel alone sometimes.

We just purchased a condo up in Surfside and we were checking up on it (it's s new-build). That's why we stayed at this hotel that night. We love Surfside Beach and greatly look forward to it opening back up soon!

Beaches are beautiful even in January! People in the area are very friendly.

‘Surfside’s gonna love it’: Grand Strand couple to open new restaurant on Surfside Beach pier

SURFSIDE BEACH, S.C. (WMBF) - One Surfside Beach couple with a special tie to the town announced they signed a lease to open a restaurant on the newly re-opened pier.

Mike and Rebecca Wallace moved to Surfside Beach in 2019, and the couple shared a special memory near the old pier where Mike proposed to Rebecca.

Now the couple is making a new memory as they announced the opening of their new restaurant, Whistling Duck.

“This is great for us. I’m excited,” said Rebecca Wallace. “We’ve thought about opening a restaurant since we got together. It’s definitely going to be challenging. But I think it’s going to be so great for the city. I think Surfside’s gonna love it.”

The plan is to have the restaurant open around Memorial Day and the menu will feature locally sourced ingredients and everything will be made fresh-to-order.

The Wallace’s said the kitchen will have no fryer. The goal is to have sharable dishes, charcuterie boards, and family-friendly menu items.

They envision the restaurant as a place for families to come and relax and enjoy their menu which features a kid-friendly peanut butter and jelly charcuterie board. The restaurant also boasts wine stewards to assist guests.

The Wallace’s said they want to bring something to Surfside Beach that is different from what is currently offered.

Grab-and-go sandwiches and salads and beach baskets that people can order and pick up will also be available.

The name of the restaurant comes from the Black Bellied Whistling Duck which can be found along the South Carolina coast. They said it’s representative of their desire for a restaurant that is all about local.

Opening the restaurant brought to life a goal the couple has had since they got married.

For more information about the Whistling Duck, you can contact [email protected] .

Surfside Beach won’t have grand-opening ceremony for new pier until fall, mayor says

S URFSIDE BEACH, S.C. (WBTW) — The town of Surfside Beach plans to wait until the fall to officially celebrate its newly opened pier.

“We want every pier business to be open and we do not want to have the ceremony in the height of tourist season, so the target is September,” Mayor Robert Krouse said Friday in a newsletter to the town’s residents. “There is A LOT that must be done to make this happen but you will be able to follow the news here as well as on the town’s website and social media.”

After years of construction and delays, the pier opened on March 14 after the completion of a final inspection. The opening coincided with the town’s 60th birthday celebration.

Construction on the concrete pier began in December 2020 . It replaces one that was destroyed by Hurricane Matthew in October 2016. Initially, officials said they expected the pier to be walkable in July 2022, but after a series of delays and miscommunications that date was pushed back.

Then, last August, town officials said they expected to have a soft opening in either September or October and a grand opening in April.
