How to fix filter: blur() performance issue in safari.

The filter: blur() property in css may come in handy in some situations, but you should know of a side effect it has in Safari (tested on version 15.1 as of this writing).

The issue is a nasty performance drop around the element on which the filter is used, making every other interaction extremely slow. And it happens in Safari only. In other browsers everything works well.

One solution I've found so far is to use transform: translate3d(0, 0, 0) along with filter on the same element, to force the browser use GPU acceleration for that particular element instead of the CPU.

This can be achieved only on Safari only (on macOS/iOS) with filter property and is not available for Chrome, Firefox, Edge, Internet Explorer, Opera or Vivaldi.

CSS Filters are a powerful tool that authors can use to achieve varying visual effects (sort of like Photoshop filters for the browser). The CSS filter property provides access to effects like blur or color shifting on an element’s rendering before the element is displayed. Filters are commonly used to adjust the rendering of an image, a background, or a border.

The syntax is:

There are a number of functions to use for the value:

brightness()

Drop-shadow(), grayscale(), hue-rotate().

  • url() – for applying SVG filters
  • custom() – “coming soon”

Multiple functions can be used, space separated.

Filter Functions

To use the CSS filter property, you specify a value for one of the following functions listed above. If the value is invalid, the function returns “none.” Except where noted, the functions that take a value expressed with a percent sign (as in 34%) also accept the value expressed as decimal (as in 0.34).

Here’s a demo that lets you play with individual filters a bit:

Converts the input image to grayscale. The value of “amount” defines the proportion of the conversion. A value of 100% is completely grayscale. A value of 0% leaves the input unchanged. Values between 0% and 100% are linear multipliers on the effect. If the “amount” parameter is missing, a value of 100% is used. Negative values are not allowed.

Negative values are not allowed.

Applies a hue rotation on the input image. The value of “angle” defines the number of degrees around the color circle the input samples will be adjusted. A value of 0deg leaves the input unchanged. If the “angle” parameter is missing, a value of 0deg is used. The maximum value is 360deg .

Inverts the samples in the input image. The value of “amount” defines the proportion of the conversion. A value of 100% is completely inverted. A value of 0% leaves the input unchanged. Values between 0% and 100% are linear multipliers on the effect. If the “amount” parameter is missing, a value of 100% is used. Negative values are not allowed.

Applies transparency to the samples in the input image. The value of “amount” defines the proportion of the conversion. A value of 0% is completely transparent. A value of 100% leaves the input unchanged. Values between 0% and 100% are linear multipliers on the effect. This is equivalent to multiplying the input image samples by amount. If the “amount” parameter is missing, a value of 100% is used. This function is similar to the more established opacity property; the difference is that with filters, some browsers provide hardware acceleration for better performance. Applies a linear multiplier to input image, making it appear more or less bright. A value of 0% will create an image that is completely black. A value of 100% leaves the input unchanged. Other values are linear multipliers on the effect. Values of an amount over 100% are allowed, providing brighter results. If the “amount” parameter is missing, a value of 100% is used.

Adjusts the contrast of the input. A value of 0% will create an image that is completely black. A value of 100% leaves the input unchanged. Values over the amount over 100% are allowed, providing results with less contrast. If the “amount” parameter is missing, a value of 100% is used.

Applies a Gaussian blur to the input image. The value of ‘radius’ defines the value of the standard deviation to the Gaussian function, or how many pixels on the screen blend into each other, so a larger value will create more blur. If no parameter is provided, then a value 0 is used. The parameter is specified as a CSS length, but does not accept percentage values.

Applies a drop shadow effect to the input image. A drop shadow is effectively a blurred, offset version of the input image’s alpha mask drawn in a particular color, composited below the image. The function accepts a parameter of type (defined in CSS3 Backgrounds), with the exception that the ‘inset’ keyword is not allowed.

This function is similar to the more established box-shadow property; the difference is that with filters, some browsers provide hardware acceleration for better performance.

Drop-shadow also mimics the intended objects outline naturally unlike box-shadow that treats only the box as its path.

Just like with text-shadow , there is no ‘spread’ parameter to create a solid shadow larger than the object.

The url() function takes the location of an XML file that specifies an SVG filter, and may include an anchor to a specific filter element. Here’s a tutorial that works as a nice intro to SVG filters with a fun demo.

Animating Filters

Since Filters are animatable it can open the doors for a whole bunch of fun.

You may combine any number of functions to manipulate the rendering, but order still matters (i.e., using grayscale() after sepia() will result in completely gray output).

A computed value of other than “none” results in the creation of a stacking context the same way that CSS opacity does. The filter property has no effect on the geometry of the target element’s box model, even though filters can cause painting outside of an element’s border box. Any parts of the target element are affected by filter functions. This includes any content, background, borders, text decoration, outline and visible scrolling mechanism of the element to which the filter is applied, and those of its descendants. Filters can also be applied to inline content, such as individual text spans.

The specification also introduces a filter(image-URL, filter-functions) wrapper function for an image. It would allow you to filter any image at the time you use it within CSS. For example, you could blur a background image without blurring the text. This filter function is not yet supported in browsers. In the meantime, you can apply both the background and the filter to a pseudo-element to create a similar effect.

-webkit- only affects Chrome, Opera (15+) and Safari. You can do filter stuff in Firefox with svg though.

For your Reference (CMIIW) css prefixs:

-khtml- (Konqueror, really old Safari) -moz- (Firefox) -o- (Opera) -ms- (Internet Explorer) -webkit- (Safari, Chrome)

Firefox prefix -moz- does not work. You must use

Interestingly it works in the new Firefox Developers Edition (so hopefully full support is on it’s way – caniuse suggests v35 will have full support without a vendor prefix).

I just put:

Without “-webkit-filter: opacity(.2);”

Works fine in Firefox Developer Edition “36.0a2 (2014-12-10)”.

I was under the impression that vendor prefixes are not needed to use filters in CSS. It does not seem to be so as when I use just

filter: blur(5px);

for an image the image is unchanged but when I use

-webkit-filter: blur(5px);

Therefore is it correct to assume that vendor prefixes are still needed?

The filter CSS property applies graphical effects like blur or color shift to an element. Filters are commonly used to adjust the rendering of images, backgrounds, and borders.

Several functions , such as blur() and contrast() , are available to help you achieve predefined effects.

With a function, use the following:

You can use url() to reference an SVG filter element . For a reference to an SVG <filter> element, use the following syntax:

The filter property is specified as none or one or more of the functions listed below. If the parameter for any function is invalid, the function returns none . Except where noted, the functions that take a value expressed with a percent sign (as in 34% ) also accept the value expressed as decimal (as in 0.34 ).

When the filter property values contains multiple functions, the filters are applied in order.

Applies a Gaussian blur to the input image.

Applies a linear multiplier to the input image, making it appear more or less bright. Values are linear multipliers on the effect, with 0% creating a completely black image, 100% having no effect, and values over 100% brightening the image.

Adjusts the contrast of the input image. A value of 0% makes the image grey, 100% has no effect, and values over 100% create a contrast.

Applies the parameter <shadow> as a drop shadow, following the contours of the image. The shadow syntax is similar to <box-shadow> (defined in the CSS backgrounds and borders module ), with the exception that the inset keyword and spread parameter are not allowed. As with all filter property values, any filters after the drop-shadow() are applied to the shadow.

Converts the image to grayscale. A value of 100% is completely grayscale. The initial value of 0% leaves the input unchanged. Values between 0% and 100% produce linear multipliers on the effect.

Applies a hue rotation. The <angle> value defines the number of degrees around the hue color circle at which the input samples will be adjusted. A value of 0deg leaves the input unchanged.

Inverts the samples in the input image. A value of 100% completely inverts the image. A value of 0% leaves the input unchanged. Values between 0% and 100% have linear multipliers on the effect.

Applies transparency. 0% makes the image completely transparent and 100% leaves the image unchanged.

Saturates the image, with 0% being completely unsaturated, 100% leaving the image unchanged, and values of over 100% increasing saturation.

Converts the image to sepia, with a value of 100% making the image completely sepia and 0% making no change.

Combining functions

You may combine any number of functions to manipulate the rendering. The filters are applied in the order declared. The following example enhances the contrast and brightness of the image:

Interpolation

When animated, if both the beginning and end filters have a function list of the same length without url() in the same order, each of their filter functions is interpolated according to the filter function's specific rules.

If the filter lists are of different lengths, the missing equivalent filter functions from the longer list are added to the end of the shorter list. The added functions use their initial, no filter modification values. All the filters listed are then interpolated according to the filter function's specific rules. Otherwise, discrete interpolation is used.

Repeating filter functions

Filter functions are applied in order of appearance. The same filter function can be repeated.

The filters are applied in order. This is why the drop shadows are not the same color: the first drop shadow's hue is altered by the hue-rotate() function but the second one is not.
