With heaps of natural beauty and historical significance, this picturesque destination will completely steal your heart.

Where is Maine?

Maine is the northeasternmost state in the US, located in a region known as New England. Maine is bordered by the Atlantic Ocean to the east and the state of New Hampshire to the west, as well as parts of Canada to the north, namely New Brunswick and Quebec.

How to get to Maine

Traveling to Maine is relatively easy with a range of options, including driving, catching a flight, or taking public transport in the form of a bus or train. Ferries are available to travel from the mainland to a number of islands off the coast.

Getting around Maine

There are a handful of ways to travel around Maine, from driving, using public transport or rideshare, or catching a flight. You just need to choose the one to suit your needs!

Maine has an efficient and reliable public transport system with bus and train networks that service most cities and regions in the state.

If short on time, you can catch a flight between cities in Maine, but driving will give you a better chance of seeing more of Maine's natural beauty.

What's the weather like in Maine?

The weather in Maine is dictated by which time of year you visit. Winters are typically cold and icy, especially in the northern parts of the state, where hearty snowfall benefits Maine's many ski mountains.

Summers are warm, sunny and pleasant but can still get fairly cool at night, especially in coastal regions. Packing layers will help fight off any chilly coastal breezes.

What do I pack for Maine?

Packing for Maine largely depends on what time of the year you're traveling in and which region of the state you're staying in.

If you're sticking to the coastal areas of Maine, the temperatures are often cooler (even in summer), so you should always pack appropriate layers, like a good sweater and long pants.

The rest of Maine experiences fairly normal seasons. You can pack dresses, shorts, and t-shirts for summer and warm layers for the colder seasons.

If you plan on walking or hiking, sensible footwear is a must. Maine is known for its natural beauty and expansive national parks, but the terrain can be quite rugged, so you'll be thankful for a good pair of shoes.

When is the best time to visit Maine?

The best time to visit Maine is between May and October, when the temperatures are warmer and the weather is nice enough to participate in outdoor activities such as cycling and hiking.

September and October are the most popular months for leaf peppers as fall foliage will be in full swing, setting the deciduous forests ablaze in shades of red, orange and gold. Due to an influx of visitors, this can be an especially busy time, and you'll want to book accommodation early.

Is Maine safe?

Maine is considered one of the safest states in the US.

This is mainly due to a strong community spirit and a smaller population than in other states. With low crime rates and quality infrastructure, you can safely assume you'll be fine traveling around the state.

Crime can still occur, so it's best always to be aware of your surroundings. Avoid traveling alone (especially at night), and stick to well-populated areas you feel comfortable in.

Are Intrepid trips accessible for travelers with disabilities?

We are committed to making travel widely  accessible , regardless of ability or disability. We do our best to help you see the world, regardless of physical or mental limitations.

We are always happy to talk to travelers with disabilities and see if we can help guide them toward the most suitable itinerary for their needs and, where possible, make reasonable adjustments to our itineraries.

FORT KENT, Maine — Fort Kent middle schoolers are the state’s first students to learn at the newly unveiled Maine Mobile Biolab, a 50-foot, 10-ton mobile lab built on an RV chassis equipped with cutting edge science tools.

The lab arrived on Monday, March 11. It was unveiled during an early afternoon ribbon cutting ceremony attended by staff and about 100 excited middle schoolers. Fort Kent is the first of 12 sites around the state that the mobile school will visit this year.

STEM educators Anna Stehlik and Heather Carlisle will travel around the state with the biolab. Stehlik on Monday demonstrated an activity that simulates the experience of locating and removing an invasive species from an environment. Students will use a UV light and camera connected to a computer to monitor the species, which is represented by beads only visible under UV light.

Through this activity, students will get $1,000 worth of play money. They need to plan a careful budget and determine which tools to purchase to most effectively remove the invasive species.

“Some of these tools are not very useful, so the students have to think about it with their group and bounce ideas off of each other, which is a lot of what science is,” Stehlik said.

Other activities at the lab include a micropipette challenge, where students learn how to use micropipettes to move dyed samples and create the visual spectrum. Another activity includes monitoring how sugar moves through the body and how diabetes can affect this process. This involves using a glucometer and glucose test strips to test simulated plasma samples.

maine state tour

Fort Kent students will attend classes in the lab on Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday and for half a day on Friday.

The lab was made possible via Portland-based nonprofit Educate Maine, who partnered with Bioscience Association of Maine, Northeastern University’s Roux Institute and Learning Undefeated.

Testimony from these organizations and Maine teachers helped the state Legislature pass LD 1389, An Act to Establish a Mobile Learning Lab.

The bill, passed last summer, provides a total of $400,000 for the lab, with $150,000 being one-time funds for contracted staffing services and the remaining $250,000 funding the mobile lab itself.

Jason Judd, executive director of Educate Maine, said that Sen. Susan Collins was also instrumental in getting $1 million via congressionally-directed spending to develop the lab.

Kate Howell, director of workforce partnerships at Educate Maine, said the lab can fit 24 students at a time. She said the lab is geared toward middle school students.

maine state tour

“That’s a time where we see a drop-off with students,” Howell said. “It’s really the time to catch them and to help them build their science identity and help them understand the opportunity to get excited about science, which really influences the classes they might take in high school.“

For the program’s pilot period this semester, the lab will visit 12 schools across the state for one week. The lab will visit Ashland District School next week and return to Aroostook County to visit Caribou Community School for the week of May 6. A full map of stops for the mobile lab is available online .

“We work with the schools to help build a schedule that works for their students and reaches the maximum number of students that they want to get on board,” she said.

Howell said they work with teachers at each school to develop a curriculum based on what subjects their students are particularly excited about. This helps educators better understand what STEM careers and industries to show their students.

Aileen Huang-Saad, director of life sciences, health, and engineering programs at the Roux Institute, brought the idea of the mobile lab to Judd shortly after relocating for her current position three years ago.

Huang-Saad said she has seen the effectiveness of mobile labs in engaging students in STEM through her experience in other locations.

“It’s really important for us to meet students where they are, as opposed to always expecting them to come and find us,” she said.

She said Judd was immediately on board with the idea, and they began to work together to make it a reality.

“It was a great synergy, because neither of us could have done this without each other,” Huang-Saad said. “Educate Maine has a very powerful network throughout the state, but they didn’t necessarily have the same access to other networks around the country working in the life sciences space. I have that network, but I certainly don’t have that ability to engage the K-12 system.”

Deborah Beaulieu, a sixth grade teacher at the school, was instrumental in bringing the lab to the St. John Valley.

Last summer, she said she needed to recertify and attended a science workshop. This is Beaulieu’s 25th year as a teacher, and she said she was curious to learn about new developments in the science field.

She learned about the biolab initiative at a workshop, and was excited about the opportunities it could bring to rural schools.

“As soon as I saw an email come through asking who was interested in having the biolab at their school, I responded immediately,” she said. “And now we’re launching the biolab. I never, ever thought that we would be the launching school.”

Last week, Beaulieu presented to nine different classrooms and explained what the bio lab would be about and when it was coming. In the days leading up to this week, she said students have been asking several questions about the lab.

“They’re super excited about it,” she said. “And it will be exciting to hear their feedback after they’ve been through the program.”

Maine Senate President Troy Jackson, who supported the bill and attended the March 11 ribbon cutting event at Fort Kent Elementary School, said the biolab will help students across the state and in rural towns access STEM education materials.

maine state tour

“It’s not that they don’t teach it, but they don’t have all the equipment,” Jackson said. “We just thought it would be a big thing to have something like this go around and spend a week at schools around the state, and to let kids know that this is out there. This is in Maine, and this could be your career.”

What is a total solar eclipse?

There are a number of different types of eclipses, which offer different views of either the sun or moon. As NASA explains it, “A solar eclipse happens when the moon passes between the sun and Earth, casting a shadow on Earth that either fully or partially blocks the sun’s light in some areas.” A total solar eclipse means the moon will completely block the sun’s face, and if you’re in the path of the eclipse, you’ll be able to see the sun’s corona and outer atmosphere, weather permitting. Other types of eclipses, like a partial solar eclipse, occur when the moon covers only some of the sun, resulting in a crescent shape.

A total solar eclipse happens when the moon blocks the entire face of the sun.

How do you safely watch a total solar eclipse?

Not only are solar eclipses special because of their relative rarity, they’re unique in how they’re watched. For the few minutes when the moon is fully blocking the sun—know as totality—viewers can look directly at the sun without any eye protection. Any other time, including the hours before and after totality when you’ll see a partial eclipse, it’s important to wear protective eye gear, such as solar eclipse glasses. “As soon as you see even a little bit of the bright sun reappear after totality, immediately put your eclipse glasses back on or use a handheld solar viewer to look at the sun,” NASA explains.

How often do total solar eclipses happen?

Solar eclipses, of one kind or another, happen between two and five times a year. Total eclipses happen about once every 18 months. However, this doesn’t mean one will be visible from your home this often. According to the Natural History Museum, London , a total solar eclipse is viewable from any one place about once every 400 years. For example, the last total solar eclipse visible from the United States happened in 2017 and followed a track from Oregon towards South Carolina. This year, the solar eclipse’s path will start in Texas and move northeast towards Maine. The next total solar eclipse will happen in 2026 and will be visible from the Arctic, Greenland, Iceland, and northern Spain.

How to read maps showing the solar eclipse path

Map of a total solar eclipse

The 2024 solar eclipse map from NASA shows where totality will occur on April 8th.

The “path of totality” shows which parts of the country will be able to see the total solar eclipse during the 2024 occurrence. About 110 miles wide, cities closer to the center of the path will sustain total darkness longer than those on the edges. Any part of the country that is not within the path may see a partial eclipse, and the closer a location is to the strip, the smaller the crescent of visible sun will be. In these locations, it won’t be safe to look directly at the eclipse without protective glasses or a viewing device. NASA has put together an interactive map , which allows viewers to see the eclipse timing in their city.

Where are the best places to see the 2024 total solar eclipse?

According to NASA , cities in Texas, Oklahoma, Arkansas, Missouri, Illinois, Kentucky, Indiana, Ohio, Pennsylvania, New York, Vermont, New Hampshire, Maine, and small parts of Tennessee and Michigan will experience the total solar eclipse. Parts of Mexico and Canada will also fall within the eclipse’s path. Read on for the best places to see the 2024 total solar eclipse.

Bloomington, Indiana, is home to Indiana University.

Much of central and southern Indiana will experience totality during the 2024 solar eclipse, but Bloomington, largely a college town and home to Indiana University, will be among the best places in the Hoosier state to watch the event. Totality here starts just after 3 p.m. and will last for about four minutes. Indianapolis, the state’s capital, is another good city to watch the eclipse, but totality will last for less time, about three minutes and 47 seconds.

This view of Cleveland Ohio from the south shows the iconic skyline under a blue sky.

Cleveland, seen here, will experience almost four minutes of totality.

Cleveland won’t be in a solar eclipse’s path of totality again until 2444 , making it a once in a lifetime experience for any locals hoping to watch the eclipse from their hometown. The city will experience maximum darkness at 3:15 p.m, which will last for just under four minutes. To commemorate the moment, the Great Lake Science Center is hosting a Total Eclipse Fest on April 6 through April 8. The free outdoor event will include speakers, concerts, performances, and hands-on science activities.

Joe Biden coming to NH after State of Union, to focus on 'lowering costs'

maine state tour

MANCHESTER — President Joe Biden is coming to New Hampshire Monday, ramping up his 2024 campaign efforts following his State of the Union speech Thursday night.

Biden will be delivering remarks in Manchester, followed by a campaign event later, according to a White House announcement. Exact locations and times were not immediately announced. The White House stated Biden will be speaking about "lowering costs for American families."

Ready for the general: Biden launches swing-state tour, massive ad buy against Trump

The visit comes soon after the president’s State of the Union address in which Biden  discussed a wide range of issues including providing aid for Ukraine and restoring abortion rights.

Biden's visit to the state will be the first one since winning the New Hampshire primary through a write-in campaign . He had declined to appear on the ballot because of a dispute over which state should go first in the nominating contest.

Supreme Court rules states can't kick Trump off the ballot

WASHINGTON — The Supreme Court on Monday handed a sweeping win to former President Donald Trump by ruling that states cannot kick him off the ballot over his actions leading up to the Jan. 6 attack on the Capitol — bringing a swift end to a case with huge implications for the 2024 election.

In an unsigned ruling with no dissents, the court reversed the Colorado Supreme Court, which had determined that Trump could not serve again as president under Section 3 of the Constitution's 14th Amendment.

The provision prohibits those who previously held government positions but later “engaged in insurrection” from running for various offices.

The court said the Colorado Supreme Court had wrongly assumed that states can determine whether a presidential candidate or other candidate for federal office is ineligible.

The ruling makes it clear that Congress, not states, has to set rules on how the 14th Amendment provision can be enforced against federal office-seekers. As such, the decision applies to all states, not just Colorado. States retain the power to bar people running for state office from appearing on the ballot under Section 3.

"Because the Constitution makes Congress, rather than the states, responsible for enforcing section 3 against all federal officeholders and candidates, we reverse," the ruling said.

By deciding the case on that legal question, the court avoided any analysis or determination of whether Trump's actions constituted an insurrection.

The decision comes just a day before the Colorado primary.

Minutes after the ruling, Trump hailed the decision in an all-capital-letters post on his social media site, writing, "Big win for America!!!"

Follow live updates on the Trump Supreme Court ruling

In addition to ensuring that Trump remains on the ballot in Colorado, the decision will end similar cases that have arisen. So far, only two other states, Maine and Illinois, followed Colorado's path. Like the Colorado ruling, both those decisions were put on hold.

Colorado Secretary of State Jena Griswold registered "disappointment" with the decision in an interview with NBC News ' Katy Tur on MSNBC .

"Ultimately, this decision ... leaves open the door for Congress to act to pass authorizing legislation. But we know that Congress is a nearly non-functioning body, so ultimately, it will be up to the American voters to save our democracy in November," she said.

Maine Secretary of State Shenna Bellows was quick to act after the ruling,

"I hereby withdraw my determination that Mr. Trump’s primary petition is invalid," she said in a statement, citing her obligation to follow the law.

The Supreme Court decision removes one avenue to holding Trump accountable for his role in challenging the 2020 election results, including his exhortation that his supporters should march on the Capitol on Jan. 6, when Congress was about to formalize Joe Biden’s win.

Trump is facing criminal charges for the same conduct. The Supreme Court in April will hear oral arguments on his broad claim of presidential immunity.

The ruling warned of the dangers of a patchwork of decisions around the country that could send elections into chaos if state officials had the freedom to determine who could appear on the ballot for president.

"The result could well be that a single candidate would be declared ineligible in some states, but not others, based on the same conduct," the ruling said.

Although the bottom-line vote was unanimous, there were some divisions on the court , which has a 6-3 conservative majority, as to how the case was resolved. The three liberal justices — Sonia Sotomayor, Elena Kagan and Ketanji Brown Jackson — complained in a jointly written concurring opinion that the court had decided more than it needed to by laying out how Section 3 could be enforced by Congress.

They said the decision could "insulate" Trump from "future controversy," adding that the ruling "shuts the door on other potential means of federal enforcement" of section 3.

Conservative Justice Amy Coney Barrett agreed that the court went further than required, although she did not join the liberal justices’ opinion.

Barrett said although she had some disagreements with the rationale, the liberals should not “amplify disagreement” in such a politically charged case.

“All nine justices agree on the outcome of this case. That is the message Americans should take home," she added.

The Colorado court based its Dec. 19 ruling on Section 3, which was enacted after the Civil War to prevent former Confederates from returning to power in the U.S. government.

The case raised several novel legal issues, including whether the language applies to candidates for president and who gets to decide whether someone engaged in an insurrection.

The state high court’s decision reversed a  lower court’s ruling in which a judge said that Trump had engaged in insurrection by inciting the Jan. 6 riot but that presidents are not subject to the insurrection clause of the 14th Amendment because they are not an “officer of the United States.”

Trump and his allies raised that point, as well as other arguments that the 14th Amendment cannot be applied. They also argued that Jan. 6 was not an insurrection.

Republicans, including Trump’s primary opponents , broadly supported his claim that any attempt to kick him off the ballot is a form of partisan election interference. Some Democrats including California Gov. Gavin Newsom have also expressed unease about the 14th Amendment provision being used as a partisan weapon.

The initial lawsuit was filed on behalf of six Colorado voters by the left-leaning government watchdog group  Citizens for Responsibility and Ethics in Washington  and two law firms.

They alleged in court papers that Trump “intentionally organized and incited a violent mob to attack the United States Capitol in a desperate attempt to prevent the counting of electoral votes cast against him.”

Noah Bookbinder, CREW's president, focused on the silver lining after the ruling, saying that the court "had the opportunity to exonerate Donald Trump for engaging in insurrection, and they did not do that."
