This route beginning in the lowlands of Nepal around 500 metres was the approach to Everest pioneered by the famous explorers and climbers, Bill Tilman in 1950 and later Eric Shipton in 1951. Crossing three passes the trails joins the Jiri-Phaplu to Everest route near Puiyan. From here it is a day to Lukla or two days to Namche Bazar if you wish to continue on the Everest trek. Mostly unspoilt with a few trekkers a year and basic tea houses this approach to Everest through the middle hills of Nepal offers a refreshing change from the crowded Lukla route.

Who should join this trek? A good choice for regular hill walkers, moderate level of fitness required. Prior trekking experience advisable. 1) Walking times: average 6-7 hours walking per day (with some longer days on pass crossings. 2) Altitude: up to 3175 m at Salpa Bhanjan pass. 3) Terrain: for some of the time following well-travelled trails through villages, although also likely to encounter rough and rocky conditions. There can be snow on the passes in winter December to March. 4) Remoteness: the trek is in a remote mountain area. However mobile phones and wifi will work on most of the days. 5) High altitude insurance including emergency evacuation insurance by helicopter is recommended for this trek.

Trek Leader - The trek will be led by a senior South Col Nepal guide.

Minimum group size is four for this trek

Day 1 Fly Kathmandu to Tumlingtar and drive by jeep to Salpa Phedi 1700 metres We take a mid morning first flight from Kathmandu to Tumlingtar by Buddha Air/ Yeti Air and take a jeep from Tumlingtar to Salpa Phedi (3-4 hours). This is on a rough road and the entire road may not be navigable during the monsoon months. We plan for this trek post monsoon November – December would be ideal. Night at a lodge at Phedi. Day 2 Phedi to Guranse 2920 metres This is quite a tough day, mainly uphill all day on stone steps so an early start is a good idea. There are a few small villages en-route so plenty of opportunities for tea and lunch. We first climb to Jaubari / Thulo Fokte in about 2 to 2.5 hours and this can be a tea stop at a lodge. From Jaubari the trail continues to climb through the peaceful forest until it reaches Guranse which is just a cluster of shacks, with a lone tea house . Phedi to Jaubari 2-2.5 hours Jaubari to Guranse 2.5 to 3 hours. Day 3 Guranse across Salpa Bhanjan pass 3350 m and down to Sanam 2675m The climb from Guranse to the Salpa pass takes around 75-90 minutes – you are now entering the Sherpa region. From the pass the trail drops to Waka /Orkobug and then descends to Sanam. Guranse to Salpa Bhanjan 75 min to 90 min Salpa Bhanjan to Sanam 2.5 to 3 hours. Day 4 Sanam to Bung 1700 metres Half an hour from Sanam is the village of Diure and then the trail comes to Nimstola Gompa with a couple of tea shacks and the monastery. Keep dropping down the valley in a very pleasant walk to the large Rai village of Gudel 1950 metres which is a good lunch stop with a number of lodges. From Gudel you can see the village of Bung on the opposite hillside - the trail drops steeply to the bridge at 1340 metres in about an hour from Gudel. It then starts climbing on the other side and finally reaches Bung 1700 metres. The village is in two parts lower and upper Bung – the lodges are in upper Bung. Sanam to Gudel 3 to 3.5 hours Gudel to Bung 2 to 2.5 hours. Day 5 Bung to Najingdingma 2650m across Surkie La 3085m The trail leaves Bung and makes a steep ascent to the school and then climbs up to the Kiraunle Chambaling Gompa in around 2 hours. The trail then passes some chortens and continues to Charakhor with a tea house and a major trail junction. From here head directly for the pass the trail northwards heads to Mera Peak. The pass is about 25 minutes from here and then there is a sharp and steep descend which can be icy in winter to Najingdingma. Bung to Surkie La 3.5 to 4 hours Surkie La to Najingdingma 1 hour. Day 6 Najindingma to Pangum 2850m across Pangum La 3173m The trail heads down and in about 45 minutes passes the settlement of Gai Kharka and then another 15 minutes bring you to the bridge across the Hinku Khola 1850 metres. There is a steep relentless climb from the bridge which comes to the village of Shubuche 2800 metres in about 90 minutes. There are impressive views towards the Inukhu valley and Mera Peak. The climb to the Pangum La pass takes about an hour – this is the last of the three middle hills passes. From the pass a 30 minute descent brings you to the monastery and the lodges of Pangum. Najingdingma to Pangum La 4.5 to 5 hours; Pangum La to Pangum 30-40 minutes. Day 7 Pangum to Puiyan 2780m This is the final day of the trek before joining the main trail from Phaplu or Jiri. The trail heads down for a while and then climbs to the single lodge at Karte and then heads up to the Khari La 3145 metres you can see the village of Bupsa on a broad ridge below. From the Khari La it is down on a steep and muddy trail to the lodges of Puiyan. Pangum to Khari La 3 to 3.5 hours Khari La to Puiyan 1 hour. Day 8 Puiyan to Ghat 2580m You are now back on the main trail and expect to see a lot more trekkers. From Puiyan the trails meanders through the village and passes a number of lodges before reaching the pass of Puiyan La in about an hour. From here the trail drops steeply to Surkhe 2300 metres. From Surkhe trail climbs up to Chaurikharkha where you see the Lukla trekkers joining the walk. For fit trekkers Phakding or Monjo is also possible. Puiyan to Surkhe 2 hr 30 min; Surkhe to Chaurikharkha 1 hr 15 min Chaurikharkha to Cheplung 20 min Cheplung to Ghat 1 hr Day 9 Ghat to Namche Bazar 3450m This follows the main Everest trail with the approximate timings below. You are well acclimatized and fit now so should not have any problems with the Namche hill unlike the Lukla trekkers. Ghat to Phakding 45 min Phakding to Benkar 1 hour Benkar to Monjo 1 hr Monjo to Jorsale 20 min Jorsale to last bridge befor Namche 45 min Last Bridge to Top Danda 45-55 min Top Danda to Namche 1 hr to 1 hr 30 min.

Trip Introduction

Arun valley Trek is a low altitude trekking in eastern Nepal. The sub-tropical valley floor of the mighty Arun River is in places densely forested, contrasting with the terraced slopes higher up which are farmed by villagers of diverse tribal groups.

High pastures typify the upper slopes, which border on the Makalu Barun National Park, an important conservation area for many threatened species.

Arun Valley is one of the unexplored, marvelous and off the beaten path trekking in Nepal. This trek follows the route of Arun River, which is located in between two giant mountains – Everest and Makalu. Tumlingtar and Lukla are the starting and ending points of the trek respectively.

Lukla is the point where you can join the Everest Base Camp trek as well. The highest point of this trekking is Salpa Bhanjyng where the holy lakes Salpa is located.

Alternate Trekking Routes to Everest Base Camp

Alternate Trekking Routes to Everest Base Camp

The trek to Everest Base Camp is the most popular in Nepal drawing upwards of 30,000 visitors a year for its incredible mountain views, excellent trails and comfortable tea house style trekking.  Here we present a few options for those wanting to visit Everest Base Camp but at the same time get off the beaten track. These treks offer a sense of the undeveloped side of Nepal and the Himalayas that most travelers miss entirely on the traditional route.

Traditional Everest Base Camp Trek

The Metal Bridge on the trail to Everest Near Periche

The Metal Bridge on the trail to Everest Near Periche

This is the traditional trekking route that is travelled 95% of the time and takes about 10 days. It starts with a flight from Kathmandu to Lukla and then follows the Dudh Kosi River past Phakding to Namche Bazaar. After taking a rest day at Namche you get the first great views of Everest as the trek continues to Tengboche.  The trek then follows the course of the Imja Khola to Dingboche. Climb the terminal moraine of the Khumbu Glacier and stay at Lobuche before making the final trek to Gorakshep (5164m) and Everest Base Camp. See More

Three Passes and Everest Base Camp

Makalu - The Fifth Highest Mountain in the World

Makalu – The Fifth Highest Mountain in the World

This one gets our vote as one of the best treks in Nepal as well as the best alternate route to Everest Base Camp. It’s a challenging trek that crosses three passes above 5000m but also rewarding with fantastic views of Cho Oyu (8,201m), Makalu (8,463m), Lhotse (8,516 m) and Everest (8,850m). Its similar to the traditional route in that it starts from Lukla but diverges from this route at Namche following the course of the Bhote Koshi Canyon for several days before crossing Renjo La (5360m) and descending into the Gokyo Valley.  A rest day is had at Gokyo and its possible to climb Gokyo Ri for fantastic views of the surrounding peaks. The view of Mount Pharilapche (6017 m / 19741 ft) as it raises behind the milky blue waters of Dudh Pokhari are renowned. The trek heads down the Ngozumpa Glacier (one of the largest in the Himalayas) and then heads over Cho La (5400m) where one has great views of Ana Dablum. From here descend to Gorak Shep and visit Everest Base Camp before again diverging from the normal route and heading over Kongma La (5535m). Fantastic views of Cholatse, Pokalde, Nuptse, Lhotse, Makalu and Ama Dablam are had from Kongma La.  After crossing the pass we descend into the valley of the Niyang Khola and stop at Chukkung, the jump off point for climbers heading to Island Peak. The rest of the treks takes the traditional route back to Lukla via Tengboche and Namche. See More

Gokyo and Reanjo La pass Trek

View from Gokyo Ri (5357 m) at Sunset

View from Gokyo Ri (5357 m) at Sunset

This is a shorter version of the Three Passes Trek which skips Kongma La and Everest Base Camp. Unlike the other treks it can’t be considered an alternate route since it does not go to Everest Base Camp but it is an interesting trek in the region that has great views of Everest.  It follows the traditional route from Lukla to Namche and then diverges and follows the higher terrain; first to Dole and then onward to Machhermo. The trek then climbs towards the terminal moraine of the Ngozumpa Glacier and follows the lateral moraine of this glacier onward to Gokyo and its six lakes. A day of rest is taken at Gokyo and one can optionally climb Gokyo Ri for fantastic views of the surrounding peaks. The peak of Pharilapche (6017m) raising above the blue waters of Dudh Pokhari are legendary and the setting of many a photograph.  Leaving Gokyo the trek the trek crosses Renjo La (5360m) before descending and following the canyon of the Bhote Koshi for several days enroute back to Namche.  The views from the top of Renjo La of Cho Oyu (8,201m), Makalu (8,463m), Lhotse (8,516 m) and Everest (8,850m) are one of the highlights of the journey.  See More

Jiri to Everest Base Camp

Prayer flags in the mountains. Cho La Pass

Prayer flags in the mountains. Cho La Pass

Skip the flight to Lukla and head out from Kathmandu on a 10 hour bone rattling bus ride to Jiri. All-in-all its between 5 and 8 days of trekking from Jiri to Lukla depending on your speed so count on adding at least a week to your total trekking time and flying out via Lukla. The trek really gives you the opportunity to see two distinct sides of Nepal. The route in from Jiri receives only a few visitors and with little more than Dal Bhatt on the menu the teahouses can hardly be called develop. While the elevation is not extremely high the trek into Lukla is difficult as the trail cuts across numerous valleys ascending and descending multiple ridge lines as it traverses the base of the Himalayas. Most trekkers will say this lower portion of the trek is the more difficult one. Once you reach Lukla the trek follows the normal route to Everest Base Camp. See More Tumlingtar to Everest Base Camp

 Signpost Everest Base Camp

Signpost Everest Base Camp

This trek starts with a flight into Tumlingtar from Kathmandu. The small village of Tumlingtar is the jumping off point for trekking groups headed to the Makalu Base Camp.  Its about a nine day trek from Tumlingtar to Lukla on this infrequently used route although climbers heading to the trekking peak of Mera use the portion of the trail closer to Lukla. This trail is really off the beaten track and the experience here is quite different as the bhattis (teashops) are very rudimentary with few comforts and simple menus. However, the people are friendly and accommodating and will do their best to ensure your experience is great. Tumlingtar (460m) is really at the base of the Himalayas and can be quite warm so be prepared with the proper dress. It’s approximately nine days from Lukla to Tumlingtar and can the route can be used either as an exit or entry into the region. One advantage to using it is an entry is that it gives you additional time to acclimatize and get in shape before tackling base camp. Like the trek from Jiri it traverses the base of the Himalayas and as a result it’s a lot of up and down. The portion of the trek takes add about 8 to 9 days to the entire trek.

Salpa High Pass (Lukla to Tumlingtar)

tumlingtar to lukla trek

Salpa High Pass Lodge trek follows along a section of the Great Himalayan Trail (GHT) to offer incredible alpine views of the Everest region. This is Sherpa country, and here you will encounter the famed Sherpa people who have made this place their home for over 1000 years. You will also encounter the Rai people, a distinct ethnic group that is distantly related to the Sherpas as well as the other mountain tribal people of Nepal. There are rhododendron and pine forests to trek through, raging mountain rivers to cross over on suspension bridges, magnificent waterfalls, and of course, incredible snowcapped mountain peaks of the Himalayas.  This section of the GHT offers very good places to stay, but lacks the number of tourists as would be found in the Khumbu/Everest region. In fact, your party may be the only foreigners you see for most of this trek.

Vertical Expedition is pleased to be able to offer this unique trek as part of our portfolio of trekking options in the Everest Region. It is a moderate trek with some elevations, but nothing too strenuous.  It is a wonderful option for people who enjoy local culture and scenery without having to deal with the crowds.

1 Day: 1 Arrival in Kathmandu

You will arrive at Tribhuvan International Airport where you will be picked up by a representative of Vertical  Expedition. You will be taken by private car to your Three Star Hotel where you will have dinner and relax after your long flight.

2 Day: 2 Free Day and Briefing

Today is a free day that you can enjoy doing sightseeing in Kathmandu. There are plenty of things to see and do, and your representative at Vertical  Expedition can help you to plan out a tour, even providing a car and guide if you desire. There will be a briefing on the trek later in the day.

3 Day: 3 Fly to Tumlingtar (elev. 1041 m)

It is an early morning flight to the Tumlingtar. From here, we can either rest for the day or do some local exploring.

4 Day: 4 Trek to Majuwadanda (elev. 800 m)

It is amazing that even though we are the shadow of Mt. Everest, we can find such a low elevation. But today, we will be actually trekking to a village that is only 800 m above sea-level. The trail drops steeply a first from Tumlingtar as we finally cross a small river on an old wooden suspension bridge (320 meters long!) We follow along the Arun River, passing a couple of small tea shops along the way. We reach the village of Chewabasi where we can have a choice of local restaurants for lunch. We continue after lunch, crossing the Arun River to reach the village of Kattike. This is an idyllic setting with traditional houses overlooking beautiful terraced fields. We continue climbing and will be rewarded with a wonderful view of the Arun River Valley below us. Our destination is Majawadanda where we will spend the night in a local mountain lodge. Trekking time is 5 hours.

5 Day: 5 Trek to Salpa Phedi (elev. 1530 m)

It is uphill today as we leave Majuwadanda as we begin on the GHT. We are entering the area of Solukhumba Section. Today is a long trek, just over 22 km which will vary from steep to flat, depending upon the local terrain. There will be great views of Mt. Makalu (5th highest mountain in the world). There are a few settlements in this area as we walk alongside the Liknuwa Khola River. There are times we pass through sub-tropical jungle with monkeys screeching in the trees. There will be a number of suspension bridges we will cross as we travel between the various small little mountain villages. We finally arrive at Salpa Phedi where we will spend the night in a local guest house. Trekking time is 8 hours today.

6 Day: 6 Trek to Sanam (elev. 2834 m) via Salpa Pass (3349 m)

It is a day of climbing on the GHT. The trek is only 14 km, but we will have to climb upwards of 1819 meters. It will be steep at times, but the views more than worth it from Salpa Pass. Here we can see Mt. Everest, Mt. Makalu and Mt. Kanchenjunga, each over 8000 meters in height. We pass through fragrant pine forests and by several small villages. This is primarily Sherpa country and we will encounter the Sherpa people in their traditional setting. We will pass Buddhist stupas and chhortens with prayer flags fluttering in the never ending breezes of the Himalayas. When we reach Sanam, we will stay next door to a monastery where we will spend the night. Trekking time is 8 hours.

7 Day: 7 Trek to Khiraule (elev. 2535 m)

It is a steep descent down, dropping nearly 1500 meters and then a tough climb upwards again as we trek to Khiraule village. The trail goes through rhododendron forests which are in bloom in March and April. At various overlooks, there are a number of places to see snowcapped peaks, including Mt. Numbur. We will pass the Makalu Barun National Park Office. There will be great views of Mera Peak, which is a popular climbing mountains (elev. 6476). We will stay at a tea house near Khiraule village. Trekking time is 8 hours.

8 Day: 8 Trek to Sibuche (elev. 2800m ) via Surke La/Charakot Pass (elev. 3070 m)

Today is some stunning scenery as we climb up to Surke La/Charakot Pass. We will pass through rhododendron forests as we see a number of fast flowing mountain streams. We also will encounter an incredibly beautiful mountain lake of Panch Pokhari with its beautiful waters reflecting the snowcapped peaks. We will spend the night at a local lodge in Sibuche where we will have a magnificent view of Mera Peak. Trekking time is 7 hours.

9 Day: 9 Trek to Paiya (elev. 2767 m) via Narkung La/Chaduk La (elev. 3161 m) and Kari La (3059 m)

We climb over two mountain passes at over 3000 meters today. Most of the time, you are walking through forests as there are very few villages here and all of them are quite small. The passes are steep as you go downhill past Mani walls. If the weather is good, there are great views of Mt. Cho Oyo , the 6th highest mountain in the world at 8,201 meters. There will also be great views of the Dudh Koshi Valley. We will trek a total of 7 hours today to reach the village of Paiya where we will spend the night in a local tea house.

10 Day: 10 Trek to Lukla (elev. 2840 m)

It is a short day of trekking as we make our way to Lukla in order to fly back to Kathmandu the next morning. It maybe a short day of trekking, but here are plenty of great views of the snowcapped peaks, including Khumbi Yul La (5761 m), Khongde ( 6168 m), Numbur (6959 m) and Kusum Khangaru (6367 m). We will relax and spend the night in Lukla at a good guest house.

11 Day: 11 Fly to Kathmandu

We return to Kathmandu by an early morning flight, where we will be taken by private vehicle to our hotel. Here you can rest, or explore the Kathmandu Valley.

12 Day: 12 Free Day

Today is a buffer day in case we can’t fly the day before. If all goes according to our plans, then it is a free day to do whatever you would like to do. There is plenty to see and do in the Kathmandu Valley. Your representative at Vertical  Expedition can help to arrange day trips around the Valley. In the evening, there will be a departure dinner with

There were only two primary ways to get to the south base camp of Mt. Everest in Nepal 53 years ago: a trip from Kathmandu, a four-to-five-week trek. Alternatively, take a one-day bus journey to Jiri, walk for five to eight days to Namche, and then to Mt. Everest.

In 1964, Sir Edmund Hillary’s Himalayan Trust built a mountaintop airport and a dirt runway at Lukla. It gave travelers a shorter route to Mt. Everest.

Most people prefer the 35 – minute flight from Kathmandu to Lukla to begin their trek. However, only a few adventurous souls take the old-fashioned trek beginning at Jiri.

So, how to get to Everest Base Camp? Below are a few Everest base camp treks with itineraries and route information.

1) The Classic Solukhumbu Trek to Everest Base Camp (13-14 days trekking)

tumlingtar to lukla trek

This is the most direct route from Lukla to the peak of Kalapatthar at 18,192 feet. Kalapatthar gives the best view of Mount Everest. This is a pilgrimage to the highest mountain in the world.

You take a short, scenic, and unforgettable early morning flight to Lukla from Kathmandu. You will start your trek from Lukla and downhill toward Dudh Koshi River. The trail includes passing the Chhupulung Ghat’s Sherpa town, along with large rocks dedicated mainly to Buddhist prayers, while heading to Phakding Village.

Your trek from Phakding to Namche Bazaar is one of the most mesmerizing as it lets you pass through the Pine forest and gives eye-pleasing views of numerous mountain peaks including Mt. Thamserku, Mt. Everest, Mt. Kusum, Mt. Kangtega, and Mt. Kangaroo.

After a day of acclimatization at Namche, you trek to reach Tengboche after descending to the Dudh Koshi river through the rhododendron trees.

You will then reach Dingboche, passing by Pangboche village and appreciating the magnificent mountain Ama-Dablam. You will be spending your night here at Dingboche for acclimatization with a chance to witness Peaks Island and Lhotse.

You will need a whole day to reach Lobuche from Dingboche. You will climb the summit of Duglha while following the Chukpo Lari ridge’s trail to reach Lobuche to see the Himalayan boundary.

You will then be climbing the lateral moraine of the  Khumbu Glacier towards Gorak Shep. You will then be left with a short walk to reach the Everest Base Camp with a view of the magnificent Khumbu Glacier and TransHimalayas.

After walking for a day, you will reach the highest point of the trek, the Kala Patthar (5,500 meters) in Mt. Pumori. You will witness numerous peaks from Kala Patthar, including Mt. Everest, Ama Table, Cholatse, Lola, Nuptse, Tabuchi, and Khumbutse.

Then you head back to Namche Bazar via Ama Dablam and Tengboche. The next day you will pass through numerous settlements such as Manjo, Phakding, Jorsalle, and Benkar on your way back to Lukla.

You will then end your trek to Everest Base Camp with a 35-minute flight to Kathmandu airport from Lukla airport.

2) Jiri to Everest Base Camp

tumlingtar to lukla trek

Traditional Everest Base Camp routes are popular with individuals who prefer to avoid the Lukla flight. The flight from Lukla to Kathmandu is regarded as one of the most dangerous in the world.

During the 1950s, the Jiri Everest base camp trek routes were well-known and famous, and expedition.

The journey to Jiri begins with a 10-hour drive from Kathmandu Valley. You begin walking from Jiri to Lukla, where the famous EBC Trek route begins.

Overall, the trek from Jiri to Lukla takes between 5 and 8 days, depending on your pace. Therefore, it is recommended that you add at least a week to your overall trekking duration and fly out of Lukla.

The trek allows you to explore Nepal from two different perspectives. The path from Jiri attracts very few visitors, and the tea houses are poorly developed, with little more than Dal Bhatt on the menu.

You may discover the lovely forest, terraces, farmlands, and Dudh Kosi river while trekking from Jiri to Lukla and avoid the crowds of trekkers.

The walk into Lukla is challenging, despite the low height, as it passes over various valleys, ascends, and descends multiple ridgelines as it traverses the base of the Himalayas. Most hikers agree that the lowest part of the trail is the most difficult.

After arriving in Lukla, the hike to Everest Base Camp follows the standard route.

3) Three Passes and Everest Base Camp

tumlingtar to lukla trek

Gokyo valley view from Gokyo Ri

The trek from Three Passes to EBC takes you through Khumbu Region’s beautiful wilderness. It is a difficult path that needs crossing 3 high-altitude passes, while a view of 4 of the world’s 10 tallest mountains makes it worthwhile.

The route begins in Lukla and changes after you reach Namche Bazaar. You will hike up the Bhote Koshi River for many days, reach the Renjo La Pass, and enter the Gokyo Valley after leaving Namche Bazaar.

You can witness numerous peaks, including Makalu, Cho Oyu, Mt. Everest, and Lhotse from Renjo La and Gokyo Ri’s top.

You will also be taking in the spectacular views of Mount Pharilapche and descending the 36-kilometer Ngozumpa Glacier, leaving behind the Gokyo Ri.

Then it’s on to Gorekshep and Everest Base Camp via Cho La (5400m), with spectacular views of Ama Dablam.

The path departs from the main road again and heads across Kongma La. Cholatse, Nuptse, Ama Dablam, Pokalde, Lhotse, and Makalu can all be seen from the pass.

You will cross the pass while descending into the Niyang Khola Valley, stopping in Chukkung, the starting point for hikes to Island Peak.

The rest of the path descends to Lukla through Tengboche and Namche, as is customary.

4) Tumlingtar to Everest Base Camp (21-22 days)

The trek begins with a flight from Kathmandu to Tumlingtar. The tiny settlement of Tumlingtar serves as a starting point for trekkers heading to Makalu Base Camp.

This rarely opted route takes around nine days to trek from Tumlingtar to Lukla. However, climbers traveling to the hiking peak of Mera use the section closer to Lukla.

This trail is truly off the beaten path, and the experience is unique because the tea shops are pretty basic, with few amenities and minimal menus. The locals are kind and accommodating and will go out of their way to ensure you have a fantastic day.

Tumlingtar (460m) is located at the foot of the Himalayas and can be extremely warm, so dress appropriately. The journey from Lukla to Tumlingtar takes around nine days and can be used as an exit or entry point into the region.

One benefit of using it as an entry is allowing you to acclimate and become in shape before confronting base camp. It traverses the foot of the Himalayas, similar to the Jiri journey, and as a result, there is a lot of up and down. This trek section adds roughly 8 to 9 days to the total trek time.

Everest Base Camp Helicopter Tour

Helicopter getting ready for Everest tour

The Everest Helicopter Tour, a brief yet worth a try helicopter tour to Mountain Everest base camp. This Everest Base Camp Helicopter Tour is ideal for individuals with a tight schedule and those not willing to hike for many days.

The journey lasts about 4-5 hours, covering views of Kathmandu city, Everest Bse Camp – especially Kalapatthar.

However, the most fantastic view of the world’s tallest mountains, including Mt. Cho Oyu, Mt. Ama Dablam, Mt. Nuptse, and Mt. Everest, can be seen from Kalapatthar.

Depending on the weather conditions, the helicopter lands at Kalapathar or Everest Base Camp for a 10 to 15 minutes exploration and sightseeing stop.

Gokyo and Renjo La Pass Trek

This shorter version of the Three Passes Trek does not include Kongma La or Everest Base Camp.

It cannot be considered an alternate route because it does not lead to Everest Base Camp, but it is a fascinating walk in the region with spectacular views of Everest. It takes the conventional route from Lukla to Namche before diverging and following the higher terrain to Dole and Machhermo.

The walk then ascends to the Ngozumpa Glacier’s terminal moraine, following the glacier’s lateral moraine to Gokyo and its six lakes. Gokyo offers a day of rest, with the option of climbing Gokyo Ri for spectacular views of the surrounding peaks. The renowned mountain of Pharilapche (6017m) rising over the turquoise waters of Dudh Pokhari has been the subject of numerous photographs.

The hike leaves Gokyo and passes Renjo La (5360m) before descending and following the Bhote Koshi canyon for several days back to Namche. One of the journey’s highlights is the view of peaks Makalu, Lhotse, Everest, and Cho Oyu from the top of Renjo La.

Best time for the Everest Base Camp Trek

Due to the harsh weather in the Everest Region, the peak and the best seasons for Everest Base Camp Trek are spring and autumn. Other seasons are the least visited.

What’s the Shortest Everest Base Camp trek route?

For each choice, there is a trekking equivalent. The shortest trek route, the classic Everest Base Camp Trail, is the most direct way. The longer you’re on the trail, the more expensive your trip is. Accommodations vary.

Tips for the Everest Base Camp Trek

Break your trekking shoes before you start – Everest Base Camp via Unsplash

Trekking in the Everest Region needs some preparation, ranging from physical fitness to mental preparedness. Train to trek and plan for extra hard days at the end.

To save money, buy the trekking gear in Nepal. You will get everything in Kathmandu at a much better rate than anywhere else in the world.

Don’t forget to break your shoe before you trek. By that I mean, walk in your trekking shoes to a few times everyday to make sure they adapt to your foot shape before you start the hike.

Carry Nepalese Rupees as well as US Dollars. You won’t find any ATMs so prepare in advance.

Everest Helicopter tour is a great alternative for the people who wants to see the closest version of Everest without trekking.

This time will I do Makalu Basecamp with a friend, but since some of our other plans changed, do we have about 3weeks extra.

So we wanted to do Jiri - Lukla -Tumlingtar - Makalu Base Camp. On both my previous visit to Lukla did I meet people that was walking from Lukla to Tumlingtar, but they were all walking with guide and porters.

I can't seem to find much information online from people that have done that hike, i can only find itinerys from trekking companies.

So, do I need any special permit on the part of the hike? or is the permit for Everest Region enough? I know I need another one for Makalu bc

Will the Tea houses be open in December/January?

And can we do it without a guide?

' class=

I have trekked The Arun Valley as part of my last EBC Trek in 2012 – I aren’t allowed to post the link to my trek notes from this as it is against TA rules, but if you send me a pm, I will gladly give you it.

We did the trek in March and there were plenty of Teahouses, these are mainly very simple and used by locals, so although I can’t be 100% sure, I would think they will be open in December.

Officially you need the Makalu Permit to trek The Arun Valley and you won’t need the EBC (Sagarmatha National park Entrance Permit) unless you Pass Monjo (And according to your itinerary, you won’t do this)

You won’t need a guide, although we had one and found him very useful, however the route is reasonably clear although you will have to be careful in making sure you are on the correct path as the maps available aren’t up to a lot – But as you know, Nepali’s are very helpful and if you keep asking directions, they will keep you on the right path ;-)

Good Luck and Happy Safe Trekking

tumlingtar to lukla trek

The Sagarmatha NP ticket is not needed but you may have to pay for the Gaurishankar Conservation Area Permit at Shivalaya (2000 rupees). The conservation area boundary includes most of Shivalaya but you do not enter it of you skirt around the south of the village.

The north side of the passes could be tricky underfoot in December. There was still a little ice and snow in mid-March 2012 and I thought. No need to go to Lukla because the rote to Tumlingtar branxhes off before then.

Here are a couple of links with good info:

>Will the Tea houses be open in December/January?

The Makalu BC trek closes completely in winter. You cross a 4000 meter pass first during this trek, and it may be closed by snow. Even worse, you may be unable to come back if snow falls while you are in the remote area towards the base camp.

The Jiri Tumlingtar trek is fine. If you want to continue a few days of trekking after Tumlingtar, you can consider Milke Danda starting in Chainpur,, with fine views of Everest from the East and of Kanchenjunga, but you will need camping gear.

This is all personal experience without a guide.

Thanks for the reply, It would be great if you could PM your trek notes Into-Thin-air.

I would probaly bring my Garmin Gps to track my steps and to find the right track.

I got my own personal travelblog where i have actually got sponored a photo camera and some other stuff to track this route for future trips for other people:)

Any idea when the tea-houses "normally" open? I did the EBC early/mid-Feb this year and there was no snow in the trail at all. And the Makalu BC trek is about the same attitude at the EBC

Hi again HaldenWailer

Scoodly has already posted a link to our own Arun Valley trek, the upper one of the two links he posted on #2 – I hope you find it useful

As far as I am aware, most of the teahouses on this route won’t close during the winter as they are used a Lot more by locals than they are by trekkers – And locals need to travel all the year round ;-)

As Rob said, plus they are locals' year round homes unlike lodges on the upper parts of Makalu, for example, that are for trekkers and no trekkers means they will close.

That said about Makalu, I have read it is sometimes possible to arrange the lodges to open and this community organisation might be worth contacting if you want to try it:

http://www.socialtreknepal.com/

Thank you, I will try to contact that company when I'm in KTM.

Have anyone experienced doing the numbur cheese circuit as a side trek as part as the Jiri - Lukla hike?

The Numbur Cheese Circuit has a 4-day camping only section, there is nobody at all in winter and yes i have hiked it.

For Makalu, no the lodges are not only for tourists, herders live in that area from spring to autumn. There is a 4000 meter pass on the way and in the winter it may be closed by snow. If a major snowfall occurs while you are on the other side, you may be unable to returnl

As we continue to trek we pass a large mani stone and wall and trek to the village of Gudel, is a big village offerin views of Mera Peak and Mt Chamlang. Leaving the village we trek along the stream flowing through the village, we descend down to Hongu Khola where we cross a bridge and climb up to the village of Bung. We trek through the village passing National Park office of Makalu Barun National Park, the trail continues passing more small settlements, forests and agricultural land and finally to Khiraule. Once we reach Khiraule we trek higher to our campsite next to a Buddhist monastery.

Today is a challenging trek day; we cross two passes through the trail. Leaving Sibuche we ascend steeply to the first pass, Narkung La. As we reach the top of the pass we will get to see beautiful view of Mt Numbur, from here we then steeply descend to a small settlement known as Panggom. We leave the village and trek to Kharikhola, the trail continues descending through forest to a small bridge from where we then ascend towards the next pass; Kari La. Once we reach at the top of the pass and if the weather is supportive then we will get to see beautiful views of Mt Numbur, Dudhkoshi valley all the way till Namche Bazar and even Cho Oyo. From here we descend steeply following the trade route from Kharikhola, few hours of trekking will take us to the small village of Paiya.

Day 10: Paiya to Lukla (2,840m/9,317ft) 4hrs trek

Comparatively today is a short trek day; after having breakfast we begin to trek. The trail mostly goes through forests and passes many lodges along the trail. As we begin to trek we gradually trek uphill for some time and then steeply descend to Surke, along the trail we will be offered with beautiful views of Khumbi Yul La, Khongde, Numbur and Kusum Khangaru, views of these snow capped mountains are worth trekking for. From Surke we trek to a bridge, after which the trail is a steep climb to Lukla. Lukla is beautiful town which is the starting point for trekkers in Everest region; the most number of people living here are Sherpa people. We rest the night here and if you don’t want to continue to trek from here you can take flight back to Kathmandu.

Day 11: Lukla to Kharikhola (2,007m/6,584ft) 8hrs trek

To reach Kharikhola we have to retrace the trail back to Paiya; after having breakfast we leave for Kharikhola. As we rejoin the trail it is a short descent to Surke and ascends back to Paiya, it is a few hours of trek to Paiya from Surke. Once we reach Paiya we will trek further to a junction where we will take the trail towards Kharikhola, we will arrive at Thamdada. At the end of the village we come across a Y-junction from where we take the trail that goes down, few minutes of descending will take us to sonam lodge from where there trail descends steeply through the forest. We descend down to Dudh Koshi River and to the village of Kare, further to Bupsa. Now we descend to the river Khari khola and cross the bridge over it, once we cross the river we gradually ascend to the village of Kharikhola. It is a larger, spread-out village with several guest houses and lodges, we will camp our tents and rest the night here.

Day 12: Kharikhola to Ringmu (2,739m/8,986ft) [via Taksindu La (3,062m/10,045ft)] 8hrs trek

We have an early breakfast and rejoin our trail; the trail is with lots of climbing and descending. From the village we descend to the village of Juving and descend further to the bridge over Dudh Koshi. Once crossing the bridge it’s a long ascend towards the pass, we trek through countryside and forests. Along the trail we will be offered with amazing views of the Himalayan peaks, such as Kusum Kangaru, Mt Numbur, Khatang and Karyalung. Continuing to trek we pass the village of Nunthala and Taksindu; then finaaly to Taksindu La pass, once we reach the top of the pass it is a good view point for Himalaya ranges. From the pass it is few hours trekking through pine forests to Ringmu, it is a Shepa village with grassy fields surrounding it. We camp the night here and rest.

Day 13: Ringmu to Sete (2,538m/8,326ft) [via Lamjura La (3,532m/11,587)] 9-10hrs trek

Today is the longest trail of the trek; after having breakfast we begin to trek. Leaving Ringmu we gradually descend to a bridge and then cross the bridge following the trail that ascends through forest, as we climb higher we reach a village called Salu and then to the village of Phurtyang. From the village we will be offered with amazing views of Mt Everest, Thamserku, Kangtega, Kusum Khangaru and Mera Peak. Just as we leave the village we come across a Y-junction from where we take the trail going up through grasslands and pine forests, the trail now descends to another town known as Junbesi. From this village we take the trail ascending to Lamjura La, along the trail at first we mostly trek through grasslands and through rhododendron forests to the top of the pass. After the pass we trek through the trail that is more or less flat and soon the trail descends steeply to another settlement called Dakchu and further to Sete. We camp our tents here and rest the night.

Day 14: Sete to Deurali (2,700m/8,858ft) 7hrs trek

After having an early breakfast we rejoin the trail and continue to trek. From here we descend down to a charming village known as Kinja, right after the village is a police post where you will have to register yourself because we will be trekking through Gaurishankar Conservation Area Project (GCAP). In Shivalaya there is a GCAP check post where you will have to pay Rs 2000 and cross the river, as we cross the river we enter Ramecchap and leave Solukhumbu behind. After we cross a bridge there are 3 trails we can choose from; 2 trail going up and one going down, we choose the new trail that goes down because this trail is a bit shorter compared to the old trail. We trek along the Linkhu Khola and cross a bridge to a dirt road, this trail will take us to the village of Korhem and soon after the village we climb to another small settlement known as Balding. From here we go up and down trekking through forests to the village of Bhandar, this village lies also in the Numbur cheese circuit; it is a beautiful non-touristic route passing through isolated Sherpa villages. After the village it is a steep climb to Deurali where we will camp the night.

Day 15: Deurali to Jiri (1,930m/6,332ft) 6hrs trek

Today is the last day of our trek; after having breakfast we begin to trek. As we rejoin the trail we start with descending through rhododendron forests and then through countryside. Soon we arrive at a dirt trail and then descend further to the village of Sangba Danda, from here the trail continues to descend further along the beautiful Khimti Khola far below us. After about an hour we will reach Shivalaya, it is the checkpost of the Gaurishankar Conservation Area Project, where you will have to pay rs 2,000. After crossing the bridge the trail follows the Yelung Khola upstream, the trail then climbs high above the river and goes through forest. Along the trail we get a good view of Gaurishankar. We cross Mali village and trek through dirt road and then through pine forests, we reach another village called Chirte. From here we trek straight towards Jiri bypassing the village of Bakhor, jiri is a interestingly busy town with many shops and guesthouses. We will stay the night here in the town.

Day 16: Jiri to Kathmandu 7hrs drive

After we have an early breakfast we walk up to the bus stop from where an arranged vehicle will drive us to Kathmandu, once we reach Kathmandu you will be transferred to your hotel. You can either rest or explore the city and accommodate the night here.

Day 17: Back home

You are free and have leisure time to explore Kathmandu until it is flight time, when you will be transferred to the airport and fly back home.
