Wandering Ancient reference board

Concept art and reference images for the Wandering Ancient.

When it became clear that the Wandering Ancient had won the Choose the Next Shadowlands Mount poll, artist Jon McConnell was tasked with bringing the mount to life. The first step was to collect a reference board with concept art, images of past iterations of ancients, and fan art by the community. McConnell figured that if the team were to introduce a new type of rideable ancient, it should line up with the pantheon of past ancients, all of whom have looks that aesthetically fit their purpose. McConnell wanted the Wandering Ancient to feel like a natural growth or root system that a player might have come across and sat down on, only to then suddenly find themselves atop an uprooted creature.

Once the concept was finished and McConnell began modelling the mount, he ended up keeping a lot of the foliage from World of Warcraft 's original ancient protector model. Some other major parts of the mount had to be created from scratch, namely the main torso and head. The mount's animation rig was built by Waleed Boghosian , after which it was passed over to the animators, who used the animations of the the original ancient models as a foundation to build upon. A lot of animation work is based on the movement of animals in the real world, but in the case of fictional creatures that only exist in WoW, the animators like to film themselves for reference, which helps them get a feel for the mindset and personality of the creature. In the case of the Wandering Ancient's animations, animator Corin McCrate acted as the stand-in.

The mount's vocalizations were provided by longtime Warcraft composer Glenn Stafford , who has previously contributed his voice to previous iterations of ancients. The Wandering Ancient's voice was intended to match the fact that it's a little smaller, friendlier, and more inquisitive than others of its kind.

The mount features an easter egg in the form of a small caterpillar sticking out of the tree on the ancient's back, as a nod to the Curious Caterpillar, one of the mount concepts that did not win the poll. This idea was suggested by Kelvin Tan and added by Jon McConnell. [4]

World of Warcraft Wandering Ancient Mount Available Now, Here's How to Get It

The results of last year's poll are finally here, so World of Warcraft players can ride into battle on the back of the Wandering Ancient mount.

The Wandering Ancient has finally arrived in  World of Warcraft .  During its BlizzConline 2021 presentation , Blizzard revealed the results of a community poll that let players decide on the next big mount. It's since been revealed that the votes overwhelmingly pointed to the Wandering Ancient—a giant living tree that serves as nature's protector. And it's free to anyone that has the  Shadowlands expansion active on their account.

The poll, aimed at increasing player agency in  World of Warcraft , also offered the community options like a cat made of ooze, a massive sentient spellbook, a frozen spider from Northrend, and an enormous caterpillar. Perhaps unsurprisingly, the vote ended in a landslide victory for the Wandering Ancient, a familiar character that had been seen in the game since its inception. With the approval of the community, Blizzard set to work crafting this unique mount.

RELATED: The Burning Crusade Classic: Every Raid, Ranked By Difficulty

To guarantee a level of authenticity, Blizzard referenced back at the Ancients already featured in the game and  World of Warcraft lore. So it went in, drawing inspiration from decades-old animation, and crafted a mount that they felt was a worthy blend of nostalgia and innovation. As an added twist, the Wandering Ancient's color scheme changes with the seasons. In winter, players can expect their mount to sport frozen branches and a chilly white palette. In the fall, the Wandering Ancient will fade into a sunburst of amber-colored leaves.

In terms of sheer size, the Wandering Ancient will be among one the largest mounts in World of Warcraft . So Blizzard brought in a talented team to rig its motion as well as voice actor Glenn Stafford to bring life to the mount. Since the Wandering Ancient is colossal and, well, ancient, Blizzard wanted it to be the perfect mount for stomping around on. Its movement was purposely designed to appear cumbersome. Oh, and as a consolation prize to the Curious Caterpillar mount that came up short in the polls, a small grub has been included riding atop the Wandering Ancient.

The Wandering Ancient is just one of the first of many in a wave of upcoming releases . Whether players voted for the Wandering Ancient or not, they will inevitably find a suitable option. The Chains of Domination update in  World of Warcraft  will see the introduction of a whole host of new flying mounts specific to each covenant. These will include the Flying Centurion for Kyrian, Wolf Serpent for Night Fae, Giant Corpsefly for Necrolords, and Stoneborn Brutes for the Venthyr. With no shortage of upcoming content, players will have a surplus of stylish mounts to ride into battle on.

World of Warcraft: How to Get Wandering Ancient Mount

Image of Alex Gibson

There’s a cool but unusual new mount available for players of Blizzard’s longstanding MMORPG to redeem, though only for those who are on board with its latest expansion. Here’s how to get the Wandering Ancient Mount in World of Warcraft.

How to Get a Wandering Ancient Mount in World of Warcraft

The Wandering Ancient Mount is the result of a collaborative brainstorm between Blizzard and various World of Warcraft communities across the globe to offer players a free mount following the launch of Shadowlands.

It is now available for all Shadowlands players to download, though as alluded to above, you’ll only be able to get it if you have purchased and downloaded the new expansion with your WoW account.

Once that’s all done, the Wandering Ancient Mount can be found in your Mount Collection tab, which is accessed by pressing Shift + P.

After redeeming it, you’ll be able to traverse Azeroth on the back of the mighty Ancient Mount, which changes colors depending on the season. It is described by Blizzard over on the game’s official website as follows:

Not all ancients are interested in war or lore, some just want to travel the world! This arboreal nomad has traveled to many places and with each passing season embraces change, both in scenery and in the foliage atop its branches.

If you’d like to hear more about the design and development of the mount then take a look at Blizzard’s trailer here .

That’s everything there is to know about how to get a Wandering Ancient Mount in World of Warcraft . For more information on the game, be sure to check out our coverage of a recent Q&A panel wherein the game’s creators touch on WoW’s future.

Wandering Ancient

The Wandering Ancient is a walking tree like mount that was give away as a promotional in the early days of the Shadowlands expansion. There were no achievements that need to be completed, the mount was simply mailed in game to you. Even if you didn't have an active subscription but you did have a free account but had purchased the Shadowlands expansion, you would have still got it. The colours of the leaves change according to the real-world season. Green indicates summer, brown Autumn/ Fall etc.

Large walking trees have been around in the game for a long time but it is only in Shadowlands that the tree became available as a mount.

The producers of the game gave descriptions of a number of mounts and asked the players which one they wanted free and it was the wandering ancient. The losing mounts would be included in the game but you'd have to try for them. One of the loosing mounts was the Magebound Spelltome, a large open book.

It is unknown as to whether you can still get the game when you purchase new game time. Other promotional mounts that were only available during a period are no longer available so its unlikely you can get the miount if you don't already have it.

It is a solo mount but also you didn't need to do anything other than log-in so it was solo=available.

WoW Is Finally Letting You Ride A Huge Tree And It Looks Amazing

The Wandering Ancient mount is coming to WoW in the Chains of Domination update; we spoke to Blizzard to learn more about it.

By Eddie Makuch on February 21, 2021 at 12:16PM PST

World of Warcraft 's new Chains of Domination update for the Shadowlands expansion is adding a brand-new mount that is a giant ancient tree that you can ride and stomp around on. Finally . It's probably my most-anticipated part of the update (I am only joking a little).

At BlizzConline, I spoke with WoW principle game designer Jeremy Feasel about this mount, including how it came about, why it's so unique, and how it connects to the wider lore.

Now Playing: World of Warcraft: Shadowlands: Chains of Domination Trailer | BlizzCon 2021

Blizzard launched a player survey some time ago asking fans what they would like to see from a new mount, allowing them to vote to determine what it would be. The idea was to work closely with the community in a new way to help players feel a greater sense of connection to Azeroth and the Warcraft universe. Some of the other options in the survey included a giant book you could ride, a kitty cat made of jelly, a caterpillar, and a creepy spider.

The Wandering Ancient was the most popular choice by far , Feasel said. "By a wide margin, everywhere, riding a giant walking tree won," he said.

Fans of The Lord of the Rings are likely familiar with big walking trees with the Ents, but the Ancients are also a central part of the Warcraft lore and Night Elves specifically.

"There's this mythology of riding on top of a giant tree," Feasel said about the portrayal of giant walking trees in media like The Lord of the Rings. "But also, Night Elves have this long and extensive lore about ancient protectors and ... it goes all the way back to Warcraft 3. I feel like there is a sect of the player base that has always wanted to ride one of those things. They finally got their way."

The Wandering Ancient is among WoW's largest-ever mounts, and as such, Feasel said players can expect it to feel very unique in that respect. "This is the mount for stomping across the landscape," he said.

Unique to the Wandering Ancient, this mount changes with the season. 🌳 ☀🍁 ❄ pic.twitter.com/6aRsXMP0O4 — World of Warcraft (@Warcraft) February 20, 2021

The Wandering Ancient is also unique in that it will change colors with the seasons--check out the animated GIF above to see that in action. Additionally, its special ability shakes the tree and different color leaves will drop off depending on the season. Feasel teased that the Wander Ancient mount will also feature some "unique extra little things" to be announced later.

One of these surprises may have already been revealed. If you look closely, you'll notice that one of the mount ideas that didn't get enough votes--the caterpillar--actually has a home on top of Wandering Ancient mount. The bug is positioned in a place that looks like he's controlling the mount, which is a nice touch.

As part of BlizzConline, the studio released an in-depth video for the Wandering Ancient in which developers across disciplines talk about how they brought the mount to the game from the very beginning to the final model. It's an impressive video and it really showcases how special and unique the mount is. Check out the video below.

The Wandering Ancient isn't the only new mount coming to Shadowlands in the Chains of Domination update. You'll also get new flying mounts. You can see those below.

Chains of Domination will also bring new flying mounts to #Shadowlands . pic.twitter.com/U47CgQu4K4 — World of Warcraft (@Warcraft) February 19, 2021

Chains of Domination is the first major update to Shadowlands since the expansion launched last year. It will include a new 10-boss raid, an eight-boss mega-dungeon that will have a Hard mode, additional PvP content, changes to the Maw, and more. On the story side, players will finally get to fight Sylvanas, which is a battle that's been brewing for years.

We spoke with Feasel, as well as technical designer Frank Kowalkowski, about a series of other topics related to Shadowlands, Chains of Domination, and the wider World of Warcraft universe. Check back soon with GameSpot for our full interview.

Screen Rant

Wow shadowlands' player-voted giant tree mount now available for free.

The Wandering Ancient, the winner of a player vote last year, has been added to World of Warcraft: Shadowlands as a free mount.

The Wandering Ancient in   World of Warcraft: Shadowlands  can now be used as a free in-game mount, with its addition being the result of a special  WoW community vote that Blizzard held in 2020. The World of Warcraft: Shadowlands expansion has been live since November, 2020 and has received wide critical acclaim.

Prior to the release of the  Shadowlands  expansion, players were given an opportunity to participate in a vote that would choose a free special community mount to be added sometime after Shadowlands launched. The poll took place over two weeks and over 260 thousand votes were cast across North America and the European Union. Much to the surprise of many at the time, the Wandering Ancient ended up being the winner by a substantial margin. The vote was completed near the end of September, about two months before  Shadowlands  launched . Now, at long last, the players are getting the mount they chose.

World of Warcraft released a 15-second trailer showcasing the first player-voted mount to be added to the game. The most unique feature of the Wandering Ancient, apart from its size, is that its leaves change color with the seasons. This giant tree creature is free for any player who currently has the Shadowlands expansion and will be available to those who purchase the expansion going forward.

Another part of the Wandering Ancient's short showcase that stands out is the specific inclusion of the text, " the first player-voted mount ." While there has yet to be any confirmation of more votes likes this in the works, it seems that Blizzard is hinting that there actually will be others. Seeing that it has nearly been six months between the end of the vote and the addition of the Wandering Ancient, however, it is not likely a new poll will be coming any time soon.

It is worth noting that Blizzard delayed the launch of World of Warcraft: Shadowlands , which likely had an impact on implementing the Wandering Ancient as a free mount. Despite fan enthusiasm, it was probably not a top priority for the developer at the time and that likely contributed to why it took nearly four months after Shadowlands' release for it to finally get added to the game. Now that World of Warcraft: Shadowlands is out and fully functional, Blizzard can put more focus on other player votes and add the winners to the game faster, but only if more polls are in the works.

Wandering Ancient chosen as World of Warcraft: Shadowlands' next mount

Earlier this month, Blizzard invited  World of Warcraft: Shadowlands  players to choose which free mount they want to see in the expansion after it  releases on October 27 .

The developer gave players the option to choose from five concepts: Wandering Ancient, Soaring Spelltome, Nerubian Swarmer, Curious Caterpillar, and Gooey Slimesaber.

The poll, which was hosted over on the World of Warcraft site , attracted over 160,000 votes over 14 days, and roughly 87,000 of those belonging to the Wandering Ancient.

"After two weeks and with hundreds of thousands of players internationally casting their votes, the popular vote for the mount you want to ride is: The Wandering Ancient!" Blizzard says on its site. "Our designers will now work on bringing this mount to life, and we'll provide more information to share with you closer to its release."

Every player with Shadowlands activated on their account will be able to download the new mount when it arrives in the game in Q1 2021.

"Not all ancients are interested in war or lore, some just want to travel the world!" reads the description of the poll-winning concept. "A large and leafy mount, the Wandering Ancient invites you to climb aboard and grab ahold of its branches as you embark on a lumbering expedition."

We look forward to seeing what the design team does with this player-led concept.

Researchers discover evolutionary 'tipping point' in fungi

by New York University

Researchers Discover Evolutionary "Tipping Point" in Fungi

Scientists have found a "tipping point" in the evolution of fungi that throttles their growth and sculpts their shapes. The findings, published in the journal Cell Reports, demonstrate how small changes in environmental factors can lead to huge changes in evolutionary outcomes.

Fungi are nature's great composters. They wait within the forest floor to feed on fallen trees and autumn leaves, releasing essential nutrients from these plants back into the Earth.

Although fungi often bring to mind mushroom caps, fungi also have underground "roots" called mycelia. Mycelia are made up of thousands of interconnected, microscopic, finger-like cells called hyphae that grow into vast networks. Hyphae worm their way through the soil by growing from their tips. To do so, they inflate themselves, similar to the long balloons used to make balloon animals.

Their elongated forms allow hyphae to locate and consume nutrients within the soil. But not all hyphae are the same shape: some have rounded tips, while others are pointed. The hyphae of water molds—fungus-like pathogens that cause blight in crops—are particularly pointy.

"A major challenge in biology is to identify the specific evolutionary factors that determine the shape—or form—of a given organism," said Enrique Rojas, assistant professor of biology at New York University and the study's senior author.

To understand the reasons for different shapes of hyphae, Rojas and his colleagues combined theory and experiments to investigate fungi and water molds from across nature. They first employed physics-based models of inflationary tip growth to determine all "possible" shapes of hyphae. Surprisingly, the shapes of "actual" hyphae found in nature assumed only a small subset of the possible shapes.

The researchers hypothesized that the limited shapes observed in nature reflected "survival of the fittest," and that the many possible shapes not observed in real fungi were, for some reason, weaker evolutionary rejects. To explore this idea, they examined the growth rate of hyphae with different shapes to create a fitness landscape for hyphae.

"Our eureka moment was when we realized that the shapes of hyphae were intimately connected to their ability to grow fast," said Maxim Ohairwe, a Ph.D. student in NYU's Department of Biology and the lead author of the study.

A fitness landscape is like a topographic map that visualizes the evolution of an organism: every species wanders through its fitness landscape by testing whether or not random mutations in its genes increase its growth rate, or fitness. A species only stops its restless wandering when a new mutation decreases its fitness—that is, when it is at a fitness peak.

Researchers Discover Evolutionary "Tipping Point" in Fungi

However, Rojas's team found that fitness landscapes can be much more rich than a system of peaks and valleys. In fact, they found that the fitness landscape for hyphae contained an overhanging cliff, or tipping point, and that this acts as a barrier to evolution, strongly limiting the shapes of fungal hyphae. Accordingly, they predicted that hyphae with shapes near the brink of the tipping point would be particularly vulnerable to small environmental, chemical, or genetic changes.

The researchers tested their prediction by treating fungi near the tipping point with small amounts of chemicals that affected hyphal growth. They used one chemical that reduces pressure within the hyphae and another derived from a sea sponge that blocks the hypha's ability to deliver cellular components to the tip of the cell. Both treatments caused the same dramatic effect: the hyphae elongated much more slowly and with a strange nub shape not found in nature.

"Our findings explain hyphal shape diversity in an enormous, diverse, and important group of species," said Rojas. "More broadly, they also demonstrate an important new evolutionary principle: that fitness landscapes can have instabilities, or tipping points, that impose strict constraints on complex traits, like biological form."

The researchers believe that their results have critical implications for our understanding of many ecological and evolutionary systems. For example, those species whose evolution is subject to a tipping point may be the most vulnerable to the gradual increase in temperature caused by climate change.

Their findings could also aid in the development of new antimicrobials against disease-causing fungi by identifying vulnerabilities in their growth associated with an evolutionary tipping point.

Seasonal Wandering Ancient Mount Changed to Fall Color Scheme

Comment by thecrusadyr.

Cool, I guess. At least it should be cool for the 10 people that use it.

Comment by FiliposVek

I hope people who voted for it are happy as almost no1 is using it .

Comment by Neryssa

And I guess no one here has any mistakes right >_>

Comment by CTEKK

I hope people who voted for it are happy as almost no1 is using it . As with all mounts that are free because free has no show off value.

Autumn tree looks good.

Comment by Dhrall

Cool, I guess. At least it should be cool for the 10 people that use it. It is indeed cool, but the fact that everyone had it makes it lose a lot of «value». Several mounts that are easy to get are really nice, but noone is using them. This is one of those. The same would have been the case for any of the nominees. I actually saw someone with the fall version yesterday and thought it locked cool, so I used it for the rest of the day.

Comment by Olympus3129

No ones using it cause everyone can fly now they added it when flying was released so of course no ones really gonna use it

Comment by schwegburt

People be complaining but I really like this feature. It's a great mount.

Comment by Haiyken

It's too big to use, honestly, and the animation is too much for me. It's not even about the flying really, I'll never use it because even when flying is not possible.

Comment by Easo

Honestly speaking - this is cool and a nice touch.

Comment by Crucia1Value

i guess people would use the free mount if it wasnt the f*ckin' tree.

Comment by Melarion

I love this Ancient. It's the land mount I use the most now. The fact that I'm a druid may play a part in this :p

Comment by KillerMoyashi13

I still think people forgot that you can get the exact same experience of riding a tree if you just do the Shatterspear quests in Darkshore. I cannot fathom why this mount won. The color changes are an all right touch, but the fall palette could be more colorful. I only see orange. Why not yellow, red, and even some bits of green? Just kind of a missed opportunity.

Comment by Kaesor

It's so funny to see that there is still bitter ppl about the "tree" winning that pool...Even more that they spend time on HATE because the one that they want didn't win after all this time. I don't use it and i don't use most of the 400 mounts i have, not because i don't like it, just because i always use the Obsidian Nightwing for all. Learn to accept that there are more ppl in this world and stop the tantrum because u didnt get the one that u want...ENJOY THE FALL COLOR SCHEME!

Comment by Hagith

I still think the book was a better choice for a free mount, and now this one as reward from legion timewalking...

Comment by Katsutomai

It's funny watching people complain about others not using the Tree Mount. Truly. There are over *600* Mounts in the game. Y'all expected EVERYONE to keep using the Tree Mount and nothing else? Jesus.. Use your bloody brains.

Comment by Soeroah

The tree won because it had the most votes. There are more players who didn't want the tree than those who did, but they were all split up between the other four options. That's how voting works. I still see the odd person on the tree mount, and I use it myself. I have an addon that summons a random mount from a character-specific list so I can have randomised mounts I consider thematic for my current alt's class/professions/race. So while I don't use the tree most of the time, it is in the pool for a few of my characters. It's always nice to see it pop up. I would have rather had the book mount, but I'm not whining about the tree winning. I am whining about the book being added as a TW Mage Tower reward, though, cuz the healing challenge (at least back in Legion) was very latency dependent and as an Australian playing on US realms I found it impossible to get past the ghost healing part of the challenge because the things were only targetable for like two seconds. So the one mount of the five I really wanted is most likely gonna be unavailable to me purely cuz I live too far from the servers.

Comment by pinelakias2

Voted for the tree. I got 340 mounts. Its in my random favourites, along with 50(?) others that I worked hard to obtain. Ya think just because I like it, I will use it constantly? Then why did I get the rest of the 339 mounts I got? :P
